Chat to me! Remember when discovering new dancehall and reggae tracks happened effortlessly through dedicated radio shows, mixtapes passed between friends, and family gatherings? Today's fragmented landscape requires intentional effort many adults simply can't prioritize amidst growing responsibilities. With 120,000 new tracks uploaded daily to streaming platforms, the sheer volume makes keeping pace nearly impossible. The discussion challenges common complaints about modern music's "slackness," noting every generation has pushed boundaries that seemed shocking at the time. What's really happening isn't cultural disconnection but evolution – a transition from trend-followers to cultural preservationists focused on passing foundational elements to the next generation. Artists bridging these generational divides, like Koffee, Busy Signal and Agent Sasco, succeed by creating music with universal themes and clear delivery. Meanwhile, streaming algorithms and the decline of riddim based collections in dancehall have removed key structures that once helped listeners organize and discover new songs. Whether you're feeling guilty about not knowing the latest tracks or wondering how to maintain authentic cultural connections while aging, this conversation offers validating perspectives on how our relationship with Caribbean music changes but never diminishes. What aspects of Caribbean culture have you found yourself evolving with rather than keeping up with? Chat to me! What if the notion of 'only one woman can be on top' in the music industry is nothing more than a myth perpetuated by the media? Joining me in this episode to dissect this is executive producer Kerry-Ann and Shawn from Reggae Talk Podcast. We challenge this stereotype and shine alight on the remarkable diversity of female talent across genres. We dissect how media narratives fuel rivalries like Rihanna vs. Beyonce and Nicki Minaj vs. Cardi B, questioning whether these stories serve to engage audiences or simply reflect societal biases. Together, we explore how social media has amplified these tensions and the broader impact on the careers of female artists. We'll also take a deep dive into the generational divide within the music industry, focusing on the unique pressures faced by female artists. From the fan-driven rivalries seen between the likes of Nicki Minaj and Cardi B to the enduring respect male artists like Jay-Z command over the years, we unpack how these dynamics play out differently for women. Shawn offers insights from the world of dancehall, drawing parallels to how artists like Spice and Shenseea navigate the competitive landscape. We reflect on the challenges posed by generational shifts and their influence on fan loyalty and musical relevance. In our final segment, we tackle the broader challenges women face in male-dominated genres such as dancehall and hip-hop. Kerry-Ann provides an eye-opening perspective on how female artists often find their creative growth stunted by industry limitations, unlike their male counterparts who enjoy greater freedom. We stress the importance of embracing diversity and resolving conflicts privately to foster a culture that celebrates, rather than pits, female talent against one another. The station will now focus on Spanish language Christian music. Caribbean artists owe their introduction to the larger community to platforms such as WVIP 93.5 FM. We converse on the struggle for discoverability of Caribbean music in an era brimming with digital platforms. We emphasize the importance of intentionality when tuning into radio stations and the role of radio in safeguarding Caribbean culture for posterity. In continued dialogue on media ownership, cultural preservation, and the future of Caribbean music; we scrutinize how ownership of these radio stations across the US impacts the digital music landscape and the broader conversations ignited on legacy, culture, and ownership. Chat to me! Reggae music and spirituality go hand-in-hand. The music has always been a source of storytelling, inspiration and motivation; which contributes to its mass appeal of a global audience. While “Good Vibes Only” is a great hashtag on social media, it’s real foundation is rooted in the admiration of the simplistic, laid back connection Reggae has on the world by the experience people feel listening to Reggae music. In this episode I’m sharing my personal connection to Reggae on a spiritual level. Inspired by my attendance of Sizzla’s listening session for his upcoming album On a High, where his elderly wisdom and connection to community reminded me of how much his earlier albums inspired me as an adolescent coming into my own spiritual journey. Chat to me! Ronnie Tomlinson is the CEO of Destine Media, a Caribbean artiste public relations and management company. Her successful transition into the entertainment market started in 2008 after the economic crisis. Being laid off from Goldman Sachs solidified her decision to become an entrepreneur and to never be dependent on a corporation for financial stability. She manages the narrative for artistes such as Mavado, Ghetto Youths Intl, Konshens, Shaggy, Kabaka Pyramid, Hood Celebrityy, Tarrus Riley, Malica, Buju Banton and recently added Sean Paul. But we’re not talking about her career in the music industry, but rather the industry itself. Ronnie recently wrote a contributing article in the Jamaica Observer about Reggae’s evolution in an article titled Reggae is Alive and Well, But Evolving . We’ve had plenty of discussions right here on the podcast about the quality of the music, changes and challenges that the music that both Dancehall and reggae have gone through in recent years. More often than not we talk about what is going wrong, similar to conversations happening online, in-person and on other media platforms. But Ronnie makes a great point about the evolution of the music landscape being different and why there IS quality music out there that we should feed energy to and we explore why. Recently releasing a new project, The Process in three parts, Gimmicks Over Lyrics , Gyal Factory and Riddim Ryda Style, respectively; I sat down with Chino and we discussed his journey in music that brought him to The Process; leveraging his access at an early age through his father, Freddie McGregor, developing his skills as a producer, song writer and honing his signature balance DJing (Dancehall style rapping), and melodic harmonies our producer Kerry coined as “Toast & Flow.” Chino draws from his musical inspirations Hip-Hop, Reggae, Dancehall, R&B and more to create a sound that leaves you wanting more. Chat to me! February is Reggae month in Jamaica, Black History Month in the U.S. and February 6th is the birthday of Bob Marley. His contribution to Reggae music is unmatched and his name rings legendary in any music conversation. While I’ve always understood Bob Marley’s musical legacy, by watching performances and listening to industry heads in documentaries, I’ve never quite experienced his importance through the eyes of fans. In this episode, I invited my mom on the podcast to a candid conversation about the impact Bob Marley had since she grew up with him musically. We talk about her reggae musical roots, when she first heard his music, key moment in his career, the sentiment around Rastafarian culture in the 70s and his legacy post death. Chat to me! Domestic violence as it relates to entertainment is nothing new. It exists in entertainment, because it exists in real life. The public gets a bird's-eye view Of the situations and are left to discuss and decide how they feel about the parties involved. Why are we talking about this now might you ask? It was definitely inspired by the allegations of physical, sexual and verbal abuse brought against Majah Hype, a famous Caribbean-American comedian and entertainer, by his now ex-fiance which she shared in a LIVE video on social media in December. We have seen some of our favorite entertainers get caught in domestic violence allegations and convictions. But are you wrong for still enjoying the art of your favorite entertainers once you’ve heard these stories? In this episode I am speaking with Uzuri Holder, a clinical social worker, to discuss really what happens in domestic violence situations from her professional expertise and what happens in real life and celebrity cases. Chat to me! In this episode I’m connecting with my ladies of Sip n Chat, an online radio program hosted Kerry, Jendayi, Jo Wheeler and myself, produced by Ronnie Tomlison. We’re dissecting impact of Noise Abatement Act being re-enforced on the the Dancehall community, particularly in the country’s capital Kingston, cutting the end time of street Dancehall parties at 12am during the week and 2am on the weekends. As the government looks to enforce the law that was introduced in the late 1990s the, we evaluate the responses from the community, potential impact from a tourism perspective, the negative impact on the dancehall community (primarily DJs, selectors, dancers and vendors) and discuss potential opportunities. Chat to me! Winnie Sabbat is a millennial Haitian woman living her best life in NYC. A finance director for a creative agency, Winnie got bit by the travel bug when her friends convinced her to travel to Mexico her senior year in college and she’s never looked back. In this episode, we talk about her migration story, overcoming cultural traditions of a woman traveling solo and her memoir about her journey. As a child, Winnie often found herself daydreaming as she enjoyed the views of the island from her rooftop. Unbeknownst to her, these moments would fuel her obsession with travel, but it wasn’t until her college graduation trip to Mexico with a few close friends that the spark for world travel would ignite a flame in her. Using her knowledge of making sound financial decisions and her love for adventure, Winnie embarked on a journey to share her experience with the world.
