In the 2022 State of Theology research by Ligonier and Lifeway Ministries show that trends over time and the 2022 survey results reveal an increasingly belief among evangelicals that God is pleased by worship that comes from those outside the Christian faith. U.S. adults increasingly reject the divine authorship of the Bible, relegating it to the same category as other religious writings and purportedly sacred texts. Maybe that’s you? Holding this view makes it easy to cherry pick biblical teaching that that resonates us with while simultaneously rejecting any biblical teaching that is out of step with our own personal views or broader cultural values. It makes faith in Jesus so much more a struggle. Numerous biblical passages testify to Scripture coming from God but today’s verses are probably the most important // Everything you need is here Included in that link is a list of resources and references I use in this podcast and can help you grow deeper in your faith as well. The cultural value of individualism makes it unsurprising that most Americans deem church membership as optional for Christians. According to an annual study by Ligonier Ministries and Lifeway Ministries on the State of Theology 68% of evangelicals believe that every Christian has an obligation to join a local church. There are a few verses that speak to church membership but in today’s verse will help further answer the question “what is the church?” // Everything you need is here Included in that link is a list of resources and references I use in this podcast and can help you grow deeper in your faith as well. As we look at ourselves and at the world, it is clear that human beings, along with the rest of creation, undergo frequent changes. But does this principle of change apply to God as well? According to an annual study by Ligonier Ministries and Lifeway Ministries on the State of Theology…a majority of adults in the U.S. believe that God learns and adapts to different circumstances. Over half of evangelicals believe this statement. Do you ever wonder if your deepest desires and dreams matter to God? For me, I feel like I don’t even deserve to ask God for things I desire or dream for. Like who am I to ask for such a thing? God you’ve done enough for me, how dare I be so selfish? That’s my perspective though. I know it’s not biblical but it is how I’ve felt and still feel a lot of the time. Today’s verse provides clarity, to the truth the God DOES in fact care about your dreams and desires and challenges how we think about those things. // Everything you need is here Included in that link is a list of resources and references I use in this podcast and can help you grow deeper in your faith as well. What is that one thing in your life that seems too difficult to overcome? Just focus on one thing. I’ll ask you more guided questions. What is this one thing that is keeping you from moving forward? Or moving at all? That makes you want to quit or avoid? These can be addictions, pain, grief, illness, financial insecurity, depression, anxiety but don’t stop at that, get really specific about this one thing even though there may be many. What is this stronghold? What is this fortress that’s keeping you from peace, keeping you from God, keeping you from being whole? Say it out loud. Guess what? What I learned from today’s verses is that there is an actual strategy to gain victory over whatever stronghold is in your life at this moment. // Everything you need is here Included in that link is a list of resources and references I use in this podcast and can help you grow deeper in your faith as well. When it comes to fear, some people never want to admit that they’re afraid. Fear of man in our cultural context can be subtle and we can easily deny that it has gripped our hearts. We all lock our doors and glance nervously around us when we’re passing through certain neighborhoods in the city. But the fear that causes us to be hypocritical or to avoid confrontation at all costs, the fear of rejection or shame, can be just as paralyzing and real, and yet we can call it other names – being considerate, not wanting to make a fuss, being shy, not liking confrontation. But in the end, fear is fear, and it’s far better if we confess it and own it. Everyone has fears, so we would be foolish to deny them. Today we look at David - who was afraid in every sense of the word and would put our fears to shame honestly. And we will read a verse from Psalm 56 that comes from it. // Everything you need is here Included in that link is a list of resources and references I use in this podcast and can help you grow deeper in your faith as well. The Bible is that it's a brutally realistic book. I'm grateful for that. It doesn't cover up sin or minimize suffering. Some Christians act like it does. Some will attack the Bible for condoning rape and slavery and murder, but the Bible doesn't condone those actions; it just shows them for what they are. In today's passage, we see two heart-breaking "horror show" incidents: A woman who has had a discharge of blood for twelve years and a young girl who dies at twelve years old. Twelve years is an awfully long time to bleed but a terribly short time to live. Sadly, we live in a world where these things happen all the time. Psalm 141 gives us a practical example to follow of how to respond to evil. It is a Psalm of dealing with liars, manipulators, schemers on the outside…but also our own hearts do the same thing to us. It’s incredibly practical for today. We have very real enemies plotting against us every day. Our own hearts deceive us, our feelings and emotions change all the time, we cannot and should not trust them to lead us.We need Psalms like this that point us toward the Lord because we need him to be our focus and our leading. // Everything you need is here Included in that link is a list of resources and references I use in this podcast and can help you grow deeper in your faith as well. We are not comfortable with the idea of submission. I can’t tell you the amount of conversations I’ve had with close friends and family about it as it relates to the Bible. Some examples... “Have confidence in your leaders and submit to their authority” “Submit yourselves, then, to God.” "Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands (as you do to the Lord.) “not my will, but yours be done.” “Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human authority:” "let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me." Seems kind of negative. Sounds as though women are not worth as much as men. I’m not comfortable with that kind of submission either. As a matter of fact, in the words of Elisabeth Elliot “I’m not particularly comfortable with any kind, but since it was God’s idea and not mine, I had better come to terms with what the Bible says about it and stop rejecting the whole thing just because it is so often misunderstood and wrongly defined.” So let’s get it right shall we? // Everything you need is here Included in that link is a list of resources and references I use in this podcast and can help you grow deeper in your faith as well. What is your hope? What are you going to plead when you face your Maker and Judge in maybe twenty years — thirty, forty, five, or even three hours? What will your plea be when he says, “So, what right do you have as a sinner in my absolutely perfect presence in heaven?” What will your answer be? If you try to say, “I was as good as so-in-so,” that will not cut it. You might’ve been as good as this person. That’s not a help. “I volunteered and donated money.” “I got baptized.” That will not help. “I went to such and such church. That’s a good one.” Wrong, wrong. Not a good one. That’s the wrong plea. Christ is good, and we are sinners. When I face God as a judge someday, I will not plead my goodness or righteousness. I can’t. I’m not. I’ll plead his goodness and righteousness and my faith in him alone. I can only do that because of the faithfulness and grace and mercy he has shown me throughout my life. We are dropping into the narrative of Jesus’ earthly ministry on the way to Jerusalem. He had appointed 72 other disciples in addition to the twelve to travel ahead of him two-by-two into towns that he would be visiting. They were to carry out the mission of proclaiming the kingdom of God, not just in their words but in their actions. This was a life or death mission and it needed to be done quickly. They were going to face hostility like lambs among wolves Jesus said. They were to travel light and avoid distractions. They were granted authority to perform miracles as a way to authenticate their message of the coming Messiah. They were focused on their calling. We pick up in today’s verses when the 72 return. Full of joy about what they have accomplished, and the authority and power they had in Jesus’ name. // Everything you need is here Included in that link is a list of resources and references I use in this podcast and can help you grow deeper in your faith as well. I came across today’s verse in my personal prayer time. It was this verse that was combined with the directive to “give God whatever glory or adoration comes to mind.” It actually gave me trouble. I thought to myself and asked myself, “how do I actually do that?” How do I give God glory? How do I show Him that I adore Him? What should I actually say to Him right now? Then I thought about what I’d want to hear from my daughters (they’re 8 and 4 btw) I didn’t mean to interject my own ego into it but it helped me shape into words what I value and adore God for. But I didn’t stay long there and here’s why this really shocked me…my next thought was “what do I do to give God glory?” and I realized I don’t have to do anything…my daughters don’t have to do anything to show that they love me or adore me…just to hear the words and have them in my presence is enough. Just for them to love others is enough. It’s the same with God. Tell him what he means to you, be specific, be close to Him, tell Him what you love about him, what he’s done for you and treat others that way. // Everything you need is here Included in that link is a list of resources and references I use in this podcast and can help you grow deeper in your faith as well. Have you ever felt far from Jesus? If I asked you to close your eyes and imagine he is sitting right next to you, how would you feel? It’s normal to feel far from Him, I think that’s why Jesus’ final teaching showed us how to remain close to Him. It’s practical and easy to wrap our heads around and we will dive into that today. There are constant thieves at your door every single day and night and they’re called unmet expectations - always ready to steal your happiness and contentment. All of us fill our lives with expectations, some good and some bad — what job we should get, what kind of spouse we’ll be married to, how that spouse will treat us, who our children will become. Our minds constantly fill in the blank slates of tomorrow with all sorts of expectations of what will happen to us. This is not wrong in itself — in fact, it’s necessary to an extent to even make tentative plans for our lives. However, we need to recognize that our expectations do not map identically to God’s plan. And His plan to save us, to send his son Jesus for us, to meet us in our disappointments among other things was something no one expected. Revelation 5 helps us by putting the sacrifice of Jesus in eternal and heavenly perspective. // Everything you need is here Included in that link is a list of resources and references I use in this podcast and can help you grow deeper in your faith as well. Jesus Christ did not come into the world to assist you in meeting your desires. He came into the world to change your desires so that he is the main one. So many preachers, influencers and others try to meet you "right where you are" with your desires, desires that you share with every fallen human being in the world and they'll say: “Jesus came to meet that.” Well, he didn’t. Each of us has our own wilderness. A place where you struggle, wander, try to figure out life with no clear answers, you face issues. You could be wrestling with relationships with friends, loved ones or family. Maybe you desperately want children and it isn’t happening foryou. Maybe it's not related to the home at all; it may be connected to your employment. With others its finances; you live continually under the gun of insufficient funds. It could be an ongoing health issue. Maybe it's a problem related to academics and school issues. That's your wilderness. Where is God in the wilderness? Did He lead you there? Why don’t I hear Him? Will He save you? This is a biblical principle and one that reverberates throughout the Bible. But it begins in today's reading from Exodus. I learned recently that whenever the New Testament talks about leadership, it never emphasizes the authority of the leader. It emphasizes the danger of their own leadership. Interesting right? It was encouraging to me because I was doubting my own abilities even as a man and a leader professionally and personally. Culture is telling me to be essentially to be a leader is to serve myself by either being super assertive, authoritative, to railroad others out of the way to get what I want. Man, I’m so glad that God and His word and truth never changes with the culture. It has been the same yesterday, today and forever. The problem is not His Word, its US it’s our mangled misinterpretation. Have you ever found yourself intentionally not praying or reading the Bible or going to church because you feel guilty? Or you don’t want to feel convicted? We generally handle guilt by avoiding dealing with it. And that goes back to day one in humanity. The world you could say is marked by warfare. Conflict and fighting all around us. We feel and see the effects of it, we try to numb the effects of it while also becoming numb to its existence in the first place. What is the root of it all? And what is the secret to a true happy life? I recently returned from a sabbatical to rest, recover from a difficult season of my life and to renew my mind and refresh my spirit. Over 2000 years ago, every moment before and every second since, Jesus was fighting back your depression, your fear, your pain, your worry. He was contending against hell…for you! I like the way Whitney Lowe from Scribble Devos puts it, "Jesus was grabbing evil by its throat, getting right up in its face and claiming YOU as His own." Jesus chose to entire darkness so that we didn’t have to stay there. Do you believe that Jesus is that that that rages when we can’t see or feel it? Is it possible for you to believe that the darkness in you is no match for him? When pain is crushing you, darkness feels like it is surrounding you, and you are overwhelmed by the things that need to be done that you simply don’t have the energy to accomplish… what should you do? Maybe you feel like, well God uses everything for good so I should be joyful knowing that truth. Do you feel like something is wrong with you because you can’t feel joyful? When your heart is breaking - don’t you just want to hide until you don’t feel this way anymore? Enter lament. Something I had never experienced in my life until I discovered my wife’s affair and our subsequent divorce. It was standing in an empty home, the home that we were planning to raise our kids in, that I let out an authentic, God-honoring, non-stoic, expression of my grief. There are many examples and Bible passages on lament, there’s an entire book dedicated to it! Today, we are going to read and reflect on the power of lament in the book of Ruth. // Everything you need is here Included in that link is a list of resources and references I use in this podcast and can help you grow deeper in your faith as well. Are you at the end of your strength? Is your life’s tank running on empty and everything you are trying to do to fill it up doesn’t seem to be working? Are you tired of trying? Do you want to quit? Are you frustrated, angry and overwhelmed, and sad all at the same time? I am. As I was looking for answers from God, exasperated with the weight and effort of simply standing still, He led me to Ephesians 3:20. // If you would like to dive deeper into this, or other verses in the Bible, if you have a verse you would like to submit to have included in a future episode if have questions about the Bible that you would like answered in a bonus episode, or simply want to connect with me click here Also included in that link is a list of resources and references I use in this podcast and can help you grow deeper in your faith as well. If you’re in the middle of a trying time in your life all you want is some peace. My peace is this imagined place of sitting back in a comfortable chair with my feet up. The tension in my core muscles and neck is released as I trust the chair to support me. I picture that I’m on this beautiful wrap-around porch as the warm breeze of spring blows through the open windows and the aroma of new blooms fills the air. I'm at rest. I’ve recently realized that what I’ve been describing is earthly peace. The dictionary defines peace as a state of tranquility or quiet - but peace in the Bible is different. It’s more than just the absence of conflict or a state of rest and I will be sharing with you today what I’ve been learning about biblical peace. // If you would like to dive deeper into this, or other verses in the Bible, if you have a verse you would like to submit to have included in a future episode if have questions about the Bible that you would like answered in a bonus episode, or simply want to connect with me... text VERSED to 58228 or click here Also included in that link is a list of resources and references I use in this podcast and can help you grow deeper in your faith as well. It’s incredibly easy to be discontent. Especially if you’ve experienced pain in your life. And how many of us have never experienced any pain? Right. It’s not this immature groaning from adolescence. It’s deep in our souls. Understanding what true contentment is can lead to true healing. If you’re wondering what is on the other side of this sadness, this loneliness, this anxiety, this longing for rest, this empty feeling, and the tears that come with it all? If you’re asking ‘why don’t I feel any better?’ This episode is for you. This is a mini-exploration of one of the greatest mysteries of the Christian faith. Having "Christ in us.” It calls out two seemingly absurd ideas: we contend for the faith and we do it with Christ’s energy. These two almost contradictory ideas come together. Having Christ in us doesn’t mean we stop working, sit back and relax. It also doesn’t mean we have to do it ALL either. We contend we claim, we hold, we affirm, we pronounce and declare our faith and we do it with Jesus’ energy and power. This is a tremendous gift that he’s made possible. Man … that leaves me undone and humbled and brought to my knees. HE will bring us to glory! In our weakness HE is strong, HE will complete the work HE has begun. HE himself is within us, leading us back home every step of the way. Every believer has been given this gift. It’s easy to focus on the empty tomb, the angel, Jesus calming their fear. It’s the story of Jesus coming back to life! It’s easy to miss what prompted this group of women (none of the twelve disciples btw) to go to the tomb. Their teacher had been crucified. The One they’d followed was unfastened from a shameful cross and laid in a tomb; his body, lifeless. The Advocate who had protected Mary after she had broken an expensive jar of perfume. The Son, The Messiah who birthed him and raised him. The Savior who had cast out seven demons from Mary Magdelene. The Man who’d understood them unlike anyone they’d ever known was gone. And now, it was Sunday. Why did they go? // If you would like to dive deeper into this, or other verses in the Bible, if you have a verse you would like to submit to have included in a future episode if have questions about the Bible that you would like answered in a bonus episode, or simply want to connect with me... text VERSED to 58228 or click here Also included in that link is a list of resources and references I use in this podcast and can help you grow deeper in your faith as well. The most natural thing in life is to have a troubled heart. It doesn’t take long to look around us and see that everyone everywhere is experiencing hurt and heartache. How do you deal with that? There are a lot of pathways that culture serves up. Everyone’s faith journey is in a different place, it's winding and complex. But God is God and THAT path remains, even when we’ve wandered off it for a time. There are more paths than ever before in today’s world—more options for spiritual “enlightenment” or curate-your-own-beliefs faith. But no path leads to true happiness and everlasting life except the “Jesus alone” path. It may be narrower than you’d like, not as comfortable or easy, it won’t make you popular and accepted by the masses but it's more satisfying than you could ever imagine. In today’s verses, we are reminded of that beautiful fact. // If you would like to dive deeper into this, or other verses in the Bible, if you have a verse you would like to submit to have included in a future episode if have questions about the Bible that you would like answered in a bonus episode, or simply want to connect with me... text VERSED to 88474 or click here Also included in that link is a list of resources and references I use in this podcast and can help you grow deeper in your faith as well. Hey everyone - I’m not going to waste too much time today because we don’t need much setup. (I realize that I just inferred I waste time on other podcasts...oh well.) Here's the deal. You see how divided we are as people. You see how divided Christians are and feels like it's getting worse, doesn’t it? That’s right where the enemy wants us. Not just so we can’t accomplish things or fight more or hate each other more… it's for a much more powerful reason and we read about in Psalm 133. Are you tired today? Are you sick of trying to do so much? If I can speak openly and share some of what’s in my personal journal from a few days ago... “I don’t feel like I have the energy to power through the things I don’t want to do. I’m overwhelmed. I’m fighting the urge to quit and do nothing. My capacity is not what it used to be. I’m sick of every day being a fight . I’m sick of all the effort it takes to just be “normal.” I’m drained.” If you’re there too, I hope you can find encouragement like I did in today’s passage from 1 Kings 19. God found Elijah in his exhaustion, his despair, fear, and weakness and he had him do something so simple that each of us needs to be reminded to do. I’m currently experiencing a struggle with the tension of loving others while also setting boundaries for myself. I’m taking relationship boundaries now. It’s hard for me to see at times that the two are not at odds. I’m learning that. I’m learning that boundaries are not only a positive for me but sometimes the most loving thing I can do! Boundaries, I’ve learned are really not about keeping others out as much as its about keeping myself in. My sense is that as Christians we have somehow adopted an idea that boundaries are inherently negative or that they are somehow sinful even. We read so many verses about love as it relates to sacrifice, being selfless, being cheerful givers but we skip over verses that teach us to practice discernment when it comes to our personal life. What if you never experienced shame? Shame. Maybe the word has become a little too churchy. What about feeling inadequate? Embarrassed? Feeling like you always have to prove yourself? You're never enough? This overwhelming feeling that your mistakes ARE your identity. It's just who you are now. Imagine being free from that? Because we live in a broken world and every single one of us sin - that means every single one of us experiences shame. So what do we do with that? We take it back to the Garden in Genesis 3. Why do you read the Bible? Some read it for help or intellectual stimulation, to understand God, seeking answers to life’s questions or maybe to read it like a novel and discover the story about Jesus. One thing that’s true is that we are told and encouraged to read it more. That’s incredibly intimidating and can be overwhelming in the midst of everything else we have going on. What do we do when we are overwhelmed? Nothing. The Bible may not answer all of our questions but it does give us direction about who God is, how to live with purpose, how to treat others, how to receive eternal life. There are incredible truths that are more than mere information, stimulating education or just a great story. In today’s verse from Hebrews, we explore how God’s Word can help us. There is a reason the self-help industry rakes in billions of dollars. We are actually pretty self-aware. We KNOW we are broken, we KNOW there is something missing, we KNOW we fail to measure up. There is aching of “not enough” inside of us and we want to do whatever we can to become the “best version of ourselves.” - as fast as we can - with as minimal effort as possible. We are wired to desire transformation - that’s good! But we go off course in WHERE we look for help, healing, and this wholeness . We get frustrated that God isn’t working on our timetable. We get frustrated that we continue to sin and become self-centered. As long as we live on this earth, striving for what is “hoped-for” will exist. If you find yourself in that place, today’s verses in Romans 7 will give you clarity! Whenever I hear someone say, “We need to just love people like Jesus did,” I get kind of annoyed. Not because I’m against that idea, but because generally, it’s used as sentiment and one that is un-Biblical... almost like it’s used to avoid hard issues. "We should just love people like Jesus did" usually means "be nice and don't be controversial." The real Jesus we meet in the Gospels loved people in a much better, deeper, richer, and much more controversial and confrontational way. Today's passage is a great example of how Jesus loved people and teaches us much about how we can love them, too If you would like to dive deeper into this, or other verses in the Bible, if you have a verse you would like to submit to have included in a future episode if have questions about the Bible that you would like answered in a bonus episode, or simply want to connect with me... text VERSED to 88474 or click here Also included in that link is a list of resources and references I use in this podcast and can help you grow deeper in your faith as well. As tempting as it may be to obey our desires, the Bible describes the human heart as “deceitful” and “desperately sick” It tells us not to lean on our own understanding. Jesus taught that out of the heart come “evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander.” Following Jesus means denying yourself, not discovering the god inside. Today we read one of the most famous verses in Jeremiah that comes in the context of people who are sinning greatly while still asking “What sins are we committing?” Let’s hear God’s response. How we act and function now as believers and followers of Jesus is determined by what we know about the future. Eternal perspective. What burdens are you carrying because you can’t forgive yourself? If Jesus has forgiven you, do you also have to forgive yourself? Do you feel stuck there? Trapped in a cage of shame? I’ve been to therapy, I’ve been to counseling, and I was the host of a Christian radio show for 11 years. I’m attempting through this podcast to grow in Bible knowledge. When it comes to self-help, I’ve probably heard it all. So when I saw this article from The Gospel Coalition titled, “Say No to the Gospel of Self-Forgiveness,” my antenna went straight up. Self-forgiveness is like this core doctrine in our therapeutic culture. Writing in Psychology Today , psychotherapist Beverly Engel says , “I believe that self-forgiveness is the most powerful step you can take to rid yourself of debilitating shame.” But here’s the vital question for Christians: Can you point to one example in Scripture of someone forgiving themselves? Well, I did the work for you and the answer is no. And guess what? That’s incredibly liberating! You CAN’T offer yourself forgiveness. It doesn’t work! You cannot release yourself of guilt. So what DOES Scripture say? We look at one example today in Psalm 51. Alright so I’m going to ask you a question and your response to it is going to reveal so much about yourself, ready? How are you doing? Maybe you recoiled into yourself when I said that. I think most of us hit cruise control and default on a “good” or “fine.” That’s what we say when we don’t feel like talking about what we are really going through because we don’t feel like telling the whole story or burdening someone else or just going there emotionally. The truth is that most of you, myself included, are overwhelmed, have a long to-do list, and are physically, emotionally, and possibly even spiritually tired. That doesn’t make you a bad person, that just reflects reality. My hope is to encourage you to embrace that truth. "YES. I’M OVERWHELMED. I'M EXHAUSTED. I’M NOT IN CONTROL." Don’t run from it. Give yourself permission to feel those heavy burdens and don’t beat yourself up for it. The point is not to bury it with a “good” or a “fine” let it breathe for a moment and then also embrace this truth you can embrace the realities of living in a fallen world, a sinful world, an anxious world WHILE embracing the Word of God, rooting yourself deeply in it, holding fast to it. Paul uses this phrase to frequently describe believers in his letters, “In Christ.” He uses the phrase 143 times. It’s said that he did this because he understood that all people struggle with sin that is rooted in an identity crisis. He knew that once they were awakened to their true identity “in Christ” that that knowledge would transform their desires, behaviors, and their lives. In today's passage, Paul says that when you are “in Christ” you become a new creation. It doesn’t matter if you have been “in Christ” for an hour or for 20 years. Being “in Christ” means you have a new position before God. What does the Bible say a downward sin spiral is? It’s more than just sinning a lot. It’s actually where sin leads to discipline from God. It comes in the form of frustration or hardship or failure and instead of us coming to God with it spiraling sin is when we seek relief from that disciple from the world - continuing to sin. Seeking a man-made solution to what is ultimately a spiritual problem - and so the cycle continues. We see this in the book of Hosea, chapter 5. Today we read from Hosea 6 which teaches us how to break the cycle. This is the VERSED podcast; a daily pursuit to become more perceptive to what the Bible says. We are being lied to every day by our culture which tells us all sorts of untrue things about ourselves and calls it tolerance and diversity. It's lies upon lies that are destroying people. We can’t be a part of distorting and undermining God’s creation. We have to live and proclaim the truth that actually sets people free and that’s the truth of Jesus. It’s the truth that God is CREATOR of all things and REDEEMER by sending Jesus to take on the penalty for our sins. Jude speaks directly to this, very boldly, and I hope it's an encouragement to you today. This is the VERSED podcast; a daily pursuit to become more perceptive to what the Bible says. Alright, I’m going to tell you out of the gate this is a different verse than you are used to if you listen to this podcast. I’ve typically gravitated towards verses that have been blatantly encouraging and reveal something about the nature of God or Jesus. That hasn’t been intentional necessarily but today we are diving into a verse my friend texted me and at the end said “what am I even reading? I think that’s enough Ezekiel for today.” Embracing this challenge let’s dive into it. This is the VERSED podcast; a daily pursuit to become more perceptive to what the Bible says. What we are about to read today is one of my favorite and incredibly beautiful verses. It is blunt, direct, poetic, black and white truth about Jesus. It's certainly not nonchalant. It punches you right in the face. And for me, its truth delivered in a way that overwhelms me with awe and wonder, a rightful fear of the Lord born out of belief in Him as Creator AND Redeemer through Jesus. We are reading the beginning of the Gospel of John today… This is the VERSED podcast; a daily pursuit to become more perceptive to what the Bible says. Sometimes the food that tastes good is not the healthiest. Ok, maybe that’s a lot of the time. The problem is that if we exclusively ate food that tasted great and disregarded how it can affect our bodies, or stopped searching for food that can taste great AND be good for our bodies we would have premature health issues that could lead to death. The same philosophy applies to our spiritual lives and it's what today’s verse, 2 Timothy 4:3 is talking about. There will be a time where people will not want spiritual “food” that is healthy but simply something that tastes good. Have you watched that new documentary, "Get Back" on The Beatles? At the time of this recording its new anyway. I thought it was really cool! I loved seeing the behind-the-scenes of the creative process and all that. I’m rediscovering how amazing The Beatles truly were and how influential they were on our culture. You know this song 'All You Need Is Love? It was an anthem, right? Even though the philosophy behind the idea was flawed and damaging (like to the extreme) that longing is what’s in us. A key component of what it means to be human is not only the capacity to love but also the need to be loved. The Bible makes it clear that love is woven into the very fabric of our nature. We read about that today in Genesis. This is the VERSED podcast; a daily pursuit to become more perceptive to what the Bible says. I’m preparing this episode while Lord of The Rings plays in the background. It's ironic actually because the theme of today's episode is worshiping idols and how to know if you are. For anyone who has read, heard of, or watched Lord of the Rings, you get it, so I don’t need to explain further about the power that the ring has in the story and the hold it has on those who come into its presence. If you haven’t, let’s talk about the story of Romeo and Juliet. I never really liked it probably because I read it in middle or high school and never really understood it. But this idea of worshipping another person so much that the very idea of having to live without the other caused each of them to commit suicide is a bit dramatic. There are stories throughout history, fact, and fiction that show the issues that arise when we worship anything other than the one true God. We see a true story of that playing out today in history, in the biblical narrative. It begs these questions, how do we know what we are truly worshipping? And what is the difference between worshipping idols and God? This is the VERSED podcast; a daily pursuit to become more perceptive to what the Bible says. I heard Elisabeth Elliot define suffering as having something you don’t want or wanting something you don’t have. That can come in many extremes however big or small but it fits in that definition. There have been hard things in my life just like yours. I can’t say that I know what you’re going through but I can say that I know the one who knows. It’s through the deepest suffering that I’ve learned the deepest lessons. If we trust Him for it be can be assured that He’s got this, he has a loving purpose and he can turn something terrible into something wonderful and that suffering is never for nothing. If you would like to dive deeper into this, or other verses in the Bible, if you have a verse you would like to submit to have included in a future episode if have questions about the Bible that you would like answered in a bonus episode, or simply want to connect with me... text VERSED to 88474 or click here Also included in that link is a list of resources and references I use in this podcast and can help you grow deeper in your faith as well. If you’ve experienced significant struggle; a diagnosis you didn’t expect, a betrayal by a loved one, death in your family, family issues, complications in surgery, financial mountains that need to be climbed, you know this isn’t right! This isn’t good, you are in a battle, you’re being attacked. It's thick in the atmosphere and there’s no denying it. There are also ways we are attacked that aren’t so obvious; constant comparison with others; about your success, your body, your clothes, your kids. Over-sexualized content that draws you into clicking deeper and swiping longer than you want, confusing your heart. Information overload locks you up in distraction causing you to be overly stimulated and anxious. You are on a battlefield. A battlefield where the enemy has more ground than you realize, and with all of this going on now is not the time to be spiritually passive. We are going to enter the celebration of the birth of Jesus with a full context of his life and ministry. My hope and prayer for each of us is that we fully experience a closeness to Jesus like never before. Luke 22 is where the Last Supper happens, where Jesus is arrested, beaten, and tried but in the midst of this, someone else is bubbling to the surface throughout these pages, Peter. We see Peter’s reactions to each of these events. His characteristic bravado, his boldness, his impulsiveness, his humanity, his denial. It’s all here. And while the purpose of reading the scripture is to learn more about Jesus, about God’s big idea, and not insert ourselves into it and not find an application to our lives in every little thing. Peter does give us the opportunity to do a bit of that and helps us reflect on the amazing things Jesus has done. Luke 15 gives us arguably the most popular parables of Jesus, delivered back to back and to the same audience, Pharisees. Which may change the way you have traditionally read them. Jesus tells the parable of the shepherd leaving the 99 sheep to chase the one lost one, and also the parable of the prodigal son. We tend to look at ourselves in these parables and interject ourselves as the lost sheep, the lost son. But Jesus’ intention in teaching was to draw attention and comparisons to the Pharisees and religious people and legalistic rule followers and the heart of God. Jesus offers warnings and encouragements in Luke 12. There is a core teaching of greed and anxiety and the root of both of those is materialism. Prayer never has been and never will be a formula for how to get rich, famous, and powerful and have all of your wildest dreams come true! Luke 11 covers Jesus teaching the disciples how to pray (the Lord’s Prayer) It also documents Jesus telling people what they don’t want to hear. In our generation and our culture, we're not used to hearing some of the things Jesus said. We have a stereotypical image of Jesus as a "nice guy" who spoke of peace, love, and understanding. My hope and prayer for each of us is that we fully experience a closeness to Jesus like never before. Luke 10 covers two massive topics. 1. Jesus sends out missionaries to towns he would be traveling to and it shows them and us how to engage in culture in terms of doing mission work. 2. The popular story of Mary and Martha. It addresses not only if salvation is something we can earn but how we can assess where we are in our relationship with Jesus today. If you feel like you are doing a lot of work for God but don’t feel close to Him, you are not going to want to miss today’s episode. This is the VERSED podcast; a daily pursuit to become more perceptive to what the Bible says. If you would like to dive deeper into certain verses in the Bible, have a verse you would like to submit to have included in a future episode, have questions about the Bible that you would like answered in a bonus episode, or simply want to connect with me... text VERSED to 88474 or click here Also included in that link is a list of resources and references I use in this podcast and can help you grow deeper in your faith as well. We are going to enter the celebration of the birth of Jesus with a full context of his life and ministry. My hope and prayer for each of us is that we fully experience a closeness to Jesus like never before. In Luke 9 we essentially see the preparation of the twelve disciples for ministry through multiple stories and scenes. Not that things haven’t been serious before but following Jesus feels like it has been ratcheted up. We see Jesus through the feeding of the 5,000 use that as a teaching moment to explain the kind of Messiah he would be and what it looks like to follow him, we read about Peter John and James witnessing the glory of Jesus, seeing Moses and Elijah and speaking about Jesus’ departure from the world, several occasions they were reminded of what Jesus came to accomplish. The beauty of this is that these lessons were not just for the twelve. It prepares all who decide to follow Jesus. A majority of Luke 3 is dedicated to arguably one of the most compelling characters in the Gospels perhaps one of the most confusing too, John The Baptist. Who was he? What was his purpose? We look at that as well as looking at one of the most famous Bible "contradictions" that critics use to show the flaws of the Bible: the biological genealogy of Jesus. It is all but guaranteed that someone at some point is not going to be happy with you. Someone will talk about you behind your back saying things that are untrue or unfair. I’m sure those memories are flooding back to you now or maybe you’re in the middle of that. What do you do in those circumstances? What do you do when life is not fair? What do you turn to? Who do you turn to vent to? There’s a model for this in today’s verses. David in the Bible experiences injustice and unfairness and we’ll see what he does with that. We wrap up our study in John 13. It’s not something that has been a deep study but there is enough here that will be split into three episodes. I encourage you if you haven’t to go back and listen to the first two parts to do that. We are diving into a passage in the book of John that documents Jesus washing the feet of the disciples at The Last Supper. We will read the same passage in these next few episodes but we will have a different reflection in each one. Today we are looking at really the whole point and significance as a whole of what Jesus expects of us. The serious business of forgiveness and servanthood. Today's verses were submitted by VERSED listener, Heather. It concerns one of the most frequent questions about God's character and that is God's wrath. Wrath is hard to justify and I have to admit it I felt the same way until I began studying the Bible more than reading it. We return to the book of Romans today - written by Paul. Paul has expressed his willingness to come and preach the gospel in Rome to teach the Christians there and to receive encouragement from them. Since most of his original audience had never met him personally, Paul wrote to explain the gospel he preached. He sets up the Gospel (the good news) against the backdrop of the bad news. The only way we can understand there is a “cure” for a disease is to know that there is in fact a disease that we possess. That’s what happens in today’s reading. We discover WHY we need the wrath of God. This is the VERSED podcast; a daily pursuit to become more perceptive to what the Bible says. In order to have salvation, there must be a need for it. Saved? Saved from what? Why? Isaiah prophesied to a nation that had turned a deaf ear to the Lord. Instead of serving Him with humility and offering love to their neighbors, the nation of Judah offered meaningless sacrifices in God’s temple at Jerusalem and committed injustices throughout the nation. The people of Judah turned their backs on God and alienated themselves from Him, which created the need for Isaiah’s pronouncements of judgment—declarations made in the hope that God’s chosen people would return to Him. There is a strong presence of judgment that runs through the first thirty-nine chapters but the overall theme is salvation. How can the two coexist? The presence of judgment indicates its necessity for salvation to occur. Today we read where Isaiah again emphasizes the bad news of the Lord’s wrath, helping us understand why the people were being condemned. Loneliness has a significant effect on our health, diabetes, anxiety, depression, addictions, suicide. It also seems like loneliness is the perfect soil for sin to flourish. If I were Satan, that would certainly be my goal - to get people lonely and isolated. Naturally, our hearts are prone to wander, to harden, and to sin. The allurements of the world never stop lying to us and calling us away from the living God. Our sinful nature wants cheap substitutes for the real rest God offers in Christ, and the world is eager to offer them to us. The truth is, we really aren’t as self-reliant as we like to portray. We are constantly looking at those around us to get our cues. That inter-dependence is nothing new. God, after all, created us for community. “It is not good for man to be alone” (Genesis 2:18). It was the only time God declared something in his creation not good before sin entered the world. In today’s verses, we look at how we can find the true rest and peace we crave, and how we can help each other find it. Today’s verses are the response to a question from a friend of mine. She sent me a text that said this, “Biblical question for you” I said, “Go for it.” She asks, “In Exodus 32, God declares he is going to murder all the Israelites down the mountain that are worshipping idols. Moses then pleaded with him & reminded him about his promises with Abraham, Issac and Jacob. Had God forgotten those promises? What made God change his mind?” “Give me time to study it?” I replied. “Absolutely.” She replied, “Enjoy the challenge.” Let’s dive in. Do you ever get tired of sinning? Like you try your best but you get caught in this vulnerability and fall back in the trap of chasing your own happiness at whatever the cost right there at that moment. Psalm 32 is a maskil of David. Maskil is a teaching psalm - it means to teach or to instruct. It was written after David’s great sin with Bathsheba. If you don't know what that is, we will dive into that briefly. Psalm 32 pairs with Psalm 51. 51, is David’s prayer for remorse and forgiveness, and mercy. 32, is after he is assured of his forgiveness and he wants to instruct others. Maybe you have heard people speak about God or specifically the “Old Testament God” as a "cosmic abuser". A vengeful, wrathful, murderer. Maybe you believe that yourself. I do have empathy for that point of view because at first glance it may appear that way, especially if we do what is often easy to do and filter the Bible through our own lens, insert ourselves into the narrative, instead of reading the Bible fully and contextually. It’s only when I began to do that that my eyes were opened and my heart exploded with this truth: God is just and righteous but when we fail to measure up, to meet expectations he fulfills the requirements for us. God is so MERCIFUL. It is so clear throughout the pages of the NT and it’s really what to book of Hosea is all about. The devil cannot make you sin. But what he will do is study your game film. He knows your tendencies like the back of his hand. He knows your distinctive weaknesses. He knows how to appeal to your evil desires so that you’ll be drawn away into sin. Sin that leads to death and separation from God. When we sin, we break that fellowship with God. Today we are reading from the book of James and answering the questions of how to remain strong when we are under trial. Some of society hates the idea of the biblical principle of the wife’s role in marriage as if it is a bad thing when if truly understood is beautiful. The husband’s role on the other hand is completely forgotten. So many guys have no idea and no example of how to be a man. What is a good husband? What kind of men has God called us to be? How do you do marriage in God's way? God’s call to husbands was needed then and it is so needed now. Have you ever heard the phrase "God didn't demand a sacrifice, we did!" It’s a core tenant of the progressive Christian church. It’s in books, blogs, and podcasts all over the place. If you haven’t heard it yet, I’m sure you will. I wanted to study this further because it could be a nice heartwarming statement right? But there was something in me that felt like it didn’t pass the sniff test. The problem is that it's terribly unbiblical and would have been rejected by Jesus and all the apostles. It’s a concept that attempts to undermine the atoning death and resurrection of Jesus. It is nearly impossible to avoid the pressure to be and to think like everyone else around us. It starts at the youngest age, we want to fit in! We don’t want to be singled out or targeted, we want to be loved and accepted, even if it comes at the cost of changing who we are like a chameleon. I think it’s fear at the core. Insecurities, anxiety, we fear being alone. And so all of us humans deal with this pressure and YET if you are a Christian, a genuine believer, and a follower of Jesus you are called to live in a culture without becoming a part of it. So practically, how in the world are we supposed to accomplish that? I think everyone has their own ideas, and their own excuses, for what being in the world but not of the world means, and no that is not the verse we are looking at today. We are going to read how we accomplish that, practically. Are you satisfied with your prayer life? I don’t know too many people who are, I think most of us know that we fall short in this discipline. Even the most mature believers recognize their need for improvement, and one of the best methods for doing that is examining scriptural prayers and using them as a model. Several of Paul’s prayers are recorded in the Bible, and they provide great insights into different ways to pray. In today’s passage, we see two foundations for prayer. It is not abnormal or crazy for us to think at times that God has forgotten us. Where is the job I have been praying for? Where is the husband or wife I’ve been searching for? Where is my healing from this sickness? There are so many instances where we can get discouraged at times and wonder if God has abandoned us. To answer that question, we will look at His response to the complaint of Israel in Isaiah 49:14–16. Have you ever worn yourself out with worry? Going to bed late, waking up early. Working harder, trying more, trying to be more productive, striving more, somehow you’ll “make it work?” Do you have young kids or have had them before? Do you know what it feels like to be sleep-deprived? Do you have a hard time falling asleep because you’re trying to solve some problem? Do you wake up in the middle of the night second-guessing a decision, and I am worried about what impact it will have on the future? I don’t want you to miss out on the central theme of Psalm 127. This podcast is always walking a fine line because I basically just produce whatever God is teaching me through my personal reading and study of the Bible. It’s authentic and real. It’s my own pursuit after all that I am inviting you into, while also trying to provide accessible theologically sound content so that this podcast wouldn’t be misleading in any way, shape, or form. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t feel the weight of that responsibility. What I want to share with you today is a verse God revealed to me. It has to do with the seriousness of the message that Christians carry. I’m sure you have heard about the concept of plants and trees needing to be pruned in order to grow right? People take this idea and apply it to their own lives in terms of boundary setting. Prune back this relationship, prune back this kind of work I’m doing so I can spend more time with my family, prune back finances for XYZ. While the process of creating, setting, and sticking to boundaries is a good one, it is incorrectly applied to a biblical concept of pruning. Why? Well, we’re about to find out. To be faint of heart means lacking the courage to face something difficult or dangerous. The truth is, many of us have been, are, or will be dealing with overwhelmed hearts. Ever had a personal crisis? Marriage on the brink? Unemployment? A life-threatening illness? Pregnancy complications? Crisis of health? When we’re facing a crisis when it’s sink or swim like to have a plan. Then we like to have a backup plan for the plan. But sometimes the Lord will allow us to be in a set of circumstances where there are no backup plans. There is no safety net. There is no way out but Him. Is your heart faint? Are you faced with a decision to trust Him or not? Today’s verses are for you. A popular misunderstanding of Jesus is that Jesus was softer and laxer on issues of sin and obedience than the Pharisees. That he was more “loving” than the traditions and laws and upended it. In reality, nothing could be further from the truth! Jesus' view of sin was much more serious than a list of rules and His call to holiness much more radical. Have you ever heard the phrase, “You are the average of your five closest friends?” Or another way “You are known by the company you keep?” It’s true right? I’ve found it to be. The people that we choose to surround ourselves with have a strong influence on our beliefs and actions. Until the day we die, the people around us and their expectations shape who we are and what we think. Today’s passage makes this very point as it calls us to acquire wisdom by walking with the wise. It could be a question you've had for a long time. It could be a question you don't think you need to ask. It could be a question that you needed to be reminded of. Regardless, the answer will change your life. We are reading from Ecclesiastes today written by a son of David and king over Israel, Solomon. He was a very wealthy and wise man who described life as a puzzle he couldn’t quite put together even though he was rich and smart and had so much at his fingertips. It’s identified as the wisdom literature in the Bible like Proverbs that helps answer the questions: What is life? And is it worth it? It’s a book about life and how not to waste it. Solomon goes on a pilgrimage to find out the meaning of life and takes his readers with him on his binges of the pleasures of the flesh, the accumulation of wealth, and the reality of death. Solomon can truly say “Been there. Done that” to almost anything. We are reading the closing of the first chapter of Ecclesiastes where Solomon is summarizing the fact that Everything is futile, a pursuit of the wind and there is nothing new under the sun. Uplifting right? Well...I actually think so. Are you in the midst of perpetual exhaustion? Where just to pick up your foot and place it in front of the other feels like you’ve run a marathon? That everyone else seems to manage their lives better? Look at them! They’re amazing parents and I bet they’re managing their home and their jobs answering every single email. Maybe there’s something off with me spiritually? Do you feel like there’s a problem with you? That there’s this person in you that can thrive, is glowing, is attractive but your circumstances and exhaustion are pinning you down? Do you actually hate how your taxing life is affecting your relationships? I can say this because I’m there too. Right now. Sometimes it can feel like needing to take care of ourselves is wrong. That needing rest is giving up. That taking a break is being selfish. And maybe even to the point where you think it is a sin. My encouragement comes from Jesus and today’s passage. Jesus got tired. Jesus needed rest. And no, we’re not stronger than him. Paul’s joy at the mere thought of the Philippian church is undeniable in the letter, and it’s that same joy that he wanted the recipients to possess as well. To lead the Philippians to this truth, Paul took them directly to Jesus, teaching them that a community of believers living in harmony with one another comes only through mutual humility modeled after the Savior. Paul gives us some of the most profound reflections on the incarnation (God becoming a man) in the entire New Testament. God constantly uses the lives of people to teach us, to inspire us, to warn us. The Bible is filled with these biographies. Stories of truth, relevant to our everyday lives. Paul wrote Romans 13 to the church in Rome while Nero was the Emporer and the Coliseum was in its peak glory. Nero, who would eventually behead Paul, who would crucify disciples Peter and Andrew on an upside-down cross and an x-shaped cross and would make some Christians into human torches and use them to light his garden parties. Think about that contextually. When Peter mentioned “submitting to authorities” THIS is who he is talking about. Obviously, Nero puts even the worst of American politicians into perspective. Romans 8 is one of the most power-packed passages of Scripture, full of incredible gospel highlights and thrilling promises of future glory. It is essentially the constitution of the church. Its major theme is the righteousness of God and Paul (who wrote the letter) wanted the Romans to understand this truth both theologically and practically - what it means and how it should be lived out. VERSED is a daily pursuit to become more perceptive to what the Bible says. For ten minutes, every Monday through Friday, you are invited to join host, John Lawhon, as he searches for hope and truth in the Bible. Each podcast will provide a space to listen to scripture, learn more about it and reflect and meditate on what was revealed. Be on the lookout for bonus episodes that take a deeper dive into scripture, unpack some of the hardest questions facing the Bible, discuss culture from a biblical perspective and answer some of your questions as well! The ultimate goal of this podcast is to become well-VERSED so that when life's trials come, we have a rock to cling to and not a river to be swept away in. Together, we will develop emotional guts and fortitude so that we are not afraid to trust God as we walk through tough situations. CONNECT ON IG: @johnlawhon TIKTOK: @versedpod
