This month we're back to the mid 80s to talk about thrash metal classics, proto-industrial stompers, enormous pop bangers, and massive cheesy 80s soundtrack rock. We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them back to Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. She also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year. Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) - a-ha, The Art Of Noise ft Max Headroom, Big Black, The Bolshoi, Bon Jovi, Billy Bragg, Stan Bush, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Crowded House, Cutting Crew, Europe, The Go-Betweens, Bruce Hornsby & The Range, The Housemartins, Hüsker Dü, In The Nursery, Iron Maiden, KMFDM, Kenny Loggins, Merzbow, Metallica, New Order, Public Image Ltd, R.E.M., Lionel Richie, Shub Niggurath, Siouxsie & The Banshees, Slayer, The Smiths, & They Might Be Giants. It's March, so it's time for the first Now Playing episode of 2025! This time Tracey and Ian have both chosen records they somehow overlooked from their best of 2024 lists with Tracey going for Scottish indie pop melodymongers Wojtek The Bear's Shaking Hands With The NME, and Ian picking the alos massively melodic Danish prog metal band Vola's Friend Of A Phantom, while Colin goes back 20 years earlier to pick the Texan psychedelic indieprog behemoth The Polyphonic Spree and their 2004 album Together We're Heavy. You can find the Wojtek The Bear album on Spotify here . The Vola record can be found on Spotify here , and the Polyphonic Spree album can be found on Spotify here . The live Polyphonic spree gig Colin discusses in the episode can be found here. 2024 is in it's final days and as is traditional it's time for us to talk aout all of the fantastic music released this year. This year Tracey & Colin have been on board with Charli XCX's Brat summer, while Ian has pretty much avoided it entirely while he's been rocking out to masked Hardcore bands with salsa rhythms. It's been another absolutely amazing year for music and it's been really difficult narrowing it down to 10 songs each. We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. For the first episode of 2024 we're going back almost 30 years to 1995 to completely ignore britpop and talk about much, much better music that was happening at the same time. This episode is dedicated to the memory of the legendary music journalist and bloody lovely bloke Neil Kulkarni who sadly and suddenly passed away last week. You may know Neil from the Chart Music Podcast, from his writing for Melody Maker, Kerrang, Vox, The Quietus, Plan B, Metal Hammer, DJ Mag & more, or you may have heard him when he guested on Colin & Ian's other podcast Free With This Months Issue in August last year. We're back for 2023! and to celebrate, we're talking about our favourite songs from 20 years earlier in 2003, when Colin quit university to work in a record shop, In addition to the music we talk about linguistics in pop punk, and feature both the longest, & shortedt songs we've ever had on any of our playlists. The scoring of our own list of 10 is now slightly more complicated in order to give a truer level of points to our own favourites. So rather than them only being able to score as many points as our 10th favourite in the other list, the points in our own list were distributed as follows - 1st place - 20 points 2nd place - 18 p

We're in the last days of 2022 AD and as such it's time for us to talk about our favourite songs of the year! It's been yet another amazing year for music and each of us could easily have submitted a top 30 on our own rather than keeping it to 10 each, but that would have taken even longer for Colin to edit so thankfully we kept it to 10... It's time for another Now Playing episode while we recalibrate the time machine ready for our next batch of episodes so we're taking the time to sit back and talk about albums we're listening to a lot at the moment. All three records this time are inspired by bands we've discussed over the last few episodes and while all three albums are very different, there are definitely similar themes throughout them (mainly them all being a bit goth). This month we're all meeting up in the year 2000 to hang out in the Millenium dome, play Timesplitters on the PS2, & try to avoid getting sued by Metallica for downloading Master Of Puppets on Napster. We'll also be talking about wind instruments fashioned from root vegetables, uttery brilliant but thoroughly depressing movies, & we speculate whether Thom Yorke was turning up at every recording studio in the world in 2000. We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Ian's wife Lydia, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them to Colin's wife Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. Helen also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year. Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) - A Perfect Circle, AFI, Antony & The Johnsons, At The Drive In, Badly Drawn Boy, Belle & Sebastian, Bjork Ft. This month we're back travelling through time, but just a short trip this time, back to the seemingly very recent 2013, where we were all still regularly listening to cds (and even cassettes in colin's case as his car back then was impressively primitive), but other than that, pretty much wearing the same clothes as we do now. Listen to us battle eachother to discover our collective favourite songs of the 2013 and alog the way uncover Ian's traumatic Japanese Noise flashbacks, Colin's language blindness, Tracey's utter desperation to obtain more points, and we question exactly how tall Ed Sheeran actually is... Another pause in our time travelling music charts this month for another Now Playing episode where we're each talking about an album we've been listening to a lot over the last few months. Colin has chosen Mordant Music's uncompromising, glitchy, hauntological 2006 meisterwerk “Dead Air”, Tracey has chosen welsh chamber pop multi-instrumentalist's excellent but confusingly titled 2016 record “2013”, & Ian's chosen post metal supergroup Battle Of Mice's amazing 2006 record “A Day Of Nights” We also briefly discuss listeners picks for best songs of 1968 & 1979, records by The Lodger, Max Gowan, Milk Bottle Sympathy, Japanese Breakfast, Les Shirley, Garbage, Моне́точка, and Kauan, Plus the short life expectancies of 1970s kids playing on farms, trolling norweigan murdery fascists, and unexpected swan movement synchronised to harrowing post metal soundscapes. We're taking a break from our time travelling music charts this month for a slightly more relaxed episode where we're each talking about an album we've been listening to a lot over the last few months. Colin has chosen Ben Christopher's electronic tinged alt rock 1999 debut "My Beautiful Demon", Tracey has chosen Adrianne Lenker's indie folk double album "Songs/Instrumentals" from 2020 & Ian's chosen Ghostpoet's dystopian alternative trip hop record "I Grow Tired But Dare Not Fall Asleep (Again)" also from 2020. We'll be back to our normal format next month where we'll be choosing our favourite songs from 1968. We've left 1985 behind and blasted forward through time to 2007 where we've been watching Spiderman 3 while queuing up to get our savings out of our Northern Rock bank accounts. We've also been talking about whether KT Tunstall is really as bad as Tracey previously thought, If rollerboots are cool or not, and whether Trent Reznor is a witch. Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) - Arcade Fire, Band Of Horses, Battles, Between The Buried And Me, Bloc Party, Bright Eyes, The Chariot, Clutch, Edwyn Collins, The Fall, Girls Aloud, Grinderman, PJ Harvey, Richard Hawley, King Creosote, Avril Lavigne, LCD Soundsystem, Malcolm Middleton, Minus The Bear, Thurston Moore, Neurosis, Nine Inch Nails, Porcupine Tree, Radiohead, Mark Ronson ft Daniel Merriweather, Kelly Rowland, 65daysofstatic, Stars, Strike The Colours & Patrick Wolf. Find all songs in alphabetical order here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2jENZ7wGCfLRONGaYYKgao?si=yQKPgmNHSiWBQeOHX1_JHQ The playlist of 20 songs from the other two hosts was scored as usual, our favourite song got 20 points, counting down incrementally to our least favourite which got 1 point. The scoring of our own list of 10 is now slightly more complicated in order to give a truer level of points to our own favourites. So rather than them only being able to score as many points as our 10th favourite in the other list, the points in our own list were distributed as follows - 1st place - 20 points 2nd place - 18 points 3rd place – 16 points 4th place – 14 points 5th place – 12 points 6th place – 9 points 7th place – 7 points 8th place – 5 points 9th place – 3 points 10th place -1 point Hosts - Ian Clarke, Colin Jackson-Brown & Tracey B Guest starring Helen Jackson-Brown. It's 2021! But not for your intrepid We Dig Music crew. We've stolen Doc Emmet Brown's DMC DeLorean and gone back to 1985 where we've been riding around in Sinclair C5's, wearing ridiculous baggy suits, and watching Live Aid on telly. We've also been talking about songs that sound like Adam Ant at the wrong speed, Guitars that sound like pointy spiders, & Electro classics performed in sadly missed Birmingham toy shops. 2020! It's been a strange one. We may not have had many gigs to go to but there's been some absolutely brilliant music helping us all through, so, as with every year, here's our annual best of the year episode! Over the next 2 hours (Longest episode yet!) we'll count down our favourite 30 songs of the year, plus we'll also discuss songs we've discovered this year that weren't released in 2020, and a few songs that narrowly missed out on being included. We've changed the voting system a little this year with the help of our friend Peter Latimer who is a maths genius. (you'll often find him stood near the mixing desk at Slowdive gigs inputting the setlist into an excel spreadsheet to predict which song will be the set closer)... We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Ian's wife Lydia, who put the playlists together and distributed them, so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them to Colin's wife Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. Helen also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of the year. Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) - Fiona Apple, Arab Strap, Astrel K, The Avalanches, Bell Witch Phoebe Bridgers, Bully, Caspian, Code Orange, Dark Globes, Dystopian Future Movies, Epic45, The Flaming Lips, Ghostpoet, Honey Harper, The Hell, Jonathan Hulten, Huntsmen, Ihsahn, I LIKE TRAINS, Jesu, Johannes & Farkosten, Lanterns On The Lake, Major Parkinson, Nada Surf, Orville Peck, Peel Dream Magazine, Молчат Дома, Porridge Radio, Royksopp & Robyn, Sleep Token, The Slow Summits,

Previously on We Dig Music... at the end of last episode Colin miscalculated the amount of thermonuclear weapons needed to destroy the alphabet and in doing so blew up the entire format of the podcast. This is a brief transmission to let you know we survived and we'll be back on December 20th with our traditional episode counting down our favourite songs of the year. Following that we'll be continuing with WE DIG MUSIC PHASE 2. obviously, you've got a bit of time until our next episode so why not catch up with any previous episodes you've missed!

It's our third anniversary! we've been putting out podcasts for 3 years and to celebrate we're doing one of our infamous Best Of episodes where we count down our 30 favourite songs of a particular year. This time we've decided to go back in time 30 years to 1990, a time where Milli Vanilli were busted for lip synching, Tim Berners Lee set out formal plans for the World Wide Web and an 8 year old Colin was still more interested in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles than music To explain how the voting works, we each picked our 10 favourite songs of the year, then in secret ranked our own out of 10 and the remaining songs from the other two's selections out of 20 (so the highest possible score would be 50 points if all three of us were unanimous on our favourite song and the lowest possible score would be 3 points). Ian's wife Lydia distributed the lists to each of us and then Colin's wife Helen added all the points up and sealed them in envelopes so we didn't find out the order until we were recording and all the reactions you hear are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three seperate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of the year. Bands featured in this episode include (in alphabetical order, you'll find no spoilers here!) - Alice In Chains, Bell Biv DeVoe, The Black Crowes, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Cocteau Twins, Deee-Lite, Depeche Mode, Entombed, Extreme, Fugazi, The House Of Love, Jane's Addiction, The La's, LL Cool J, Loop, Ministry, Pantera, Pixies, Primal Scream, Public Enemy, Revolting Cocks, Sea Urchins, Sisters Of Mercy, Slayer, Sonic Youth, The Sundays, Teenage Fanclub, They Might Be Giants, Ultra Vivid Scene, & Vanilla Ice. It's the end of 2019 which has been an utterly fantastic year for music (possibly at the expense of everything else...) so as is traditional, here's our annual best of the year extravaganza! We count down our favourite 30 songs of the year, plus we discuss songs that didn't quite make it, our favourite gigs of the year and also music we've discovered this year that didn't come out in 2019. We're 2 years old (not literally, please don't close our Twitter account...) so in a break from our usual programming this month we have a VERY SPECIAL EPISODE for you all. It's a bit like our christmas/end of year episodes, but rather than being our favourite songs of the last year, this time we're going back in time for two full decades to the year 1999! To explain how the voting works, we each picked our 10 favourite songs of the year, then for each list we each ranked them 1-10 giving 10 points to our favourite and 1 to the one we liked least on each list. we also had a bonus point we could assign to one song on either of the other people's lists (So Colin could only assign the bonus point to a song on either Tracey or Ian's list). Colin's wife then added all the points up and we didn't find out the order until we were recording, so all the reactions you'll hear are genuine. Now admittedly, we are a little bit brutal to some of the songs on the list, but please remember that to be in the episode they have to have been in one of our top tens of the year! Bands featured in this episode include American Football, Tori Amos, Aphex Twin, Bonnie "Prince" Billy, The Chemical Brothers, Ani DiFranco, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Dr Dre Ft, Snoop Dogg, Filter, The Flaming Lips, Ben Folds Five, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Grant Hart, The Herbaliser, Jimmy Eat World, Marduk, Mindless Self Indulgence, Mint Royale Ft. Lauren Laverne, Mogwai, Neurosis, Nine Inch Nails, Pavement, Porcupine Tree, Sigur Ros, Slipknot, Songs: Ohia, Therapy?, Tom Waits & Wilco. You can find all the songs in alphabetical order here - https://open.spotify.com/user/newpathstohelicon/playlist/1o4JFcX2m2vLU3NXMWJQhd?si=Te2tYfodQ7uXtKfxdzxUGw As always, we'd love to hear what you think so talk to us on facebook at www.facebook.com/wedigmusicpcast or on Twitter @wedigmusicpcast Find our other episodes & podcasts/articles at www.wedigmusic.com

Surprise! you get this episode a whole week early as Colin & Ian are off to Poland to see Laibach next week! It's February and we're at the letter O so this time we'll be discussing (and in one bands case, arguing slightly) about Swedish Prog metal behemoths Opeth and Mancunian everyone plagiarists Oasis. There's a LOT of very rude words in this episode so possibly best not to listen to when you're with your granny, local vicar or any sensitive members of Oasis.
