We Dig Music - Series 8 Episode 4 - Best of 1986
This month we're back to the mid 80s to talk about thrash metal classics, proto-industrial stompers, enormous pop bangers, and massive cheesy 80s soundtrack rock. We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them back to Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order.She also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. It's March, so it's time for the first Now Playing episode of 2025! This time Tracey and Ian have both chosen records they somehow overlooked from their best of 2024 lists with Tracey going for Scottish indie pop melodymongers Wojtek The Bear's Shaking Hands With The NME, and Ian picking the alos massively melodic Danish prog metal band Vola's Friend Of A Phantom, while Colin goes back 20 years earlier to pick the Texan psychedelic indieprog behemoth The Polyphonic Spree and their 2004 album Together We're Heavy. For this months episode we head back to 1971 for a batch of epicly long prog epics, peppered with the occasional bit of folk rock, powerpop, metal, jazz, and afrobeat. We begin 2025 by going back 23 years to discuss our favourite songs of 2002, including emo classics, motivational hardcore, sparkly piano pop, terrifyingly positive psychedelic religious cults, and THE GREATEST GUITAR RIFF OF ALL TIME. 2024 is in it's final days and as is traditional it's time for us to talk aout all of the fantastic music released this year. This year Tracey & Colin have been on board with Charli XCX's Brat summer, while Ian has pretty much avoided it entirely while he's been rocking out to masked Hardcore bands with salsa rhythms. This month we're back to the BC era (Before Colin), where we'll be discussing our favourite songs of 1980, inlcuding lashings of nuclear paranoia, a brace of classic metal, and a nice healthy dollop of goth. We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We Dig Music - Series 6 Episode 5 - Best of 2011
We're back to this century for this months episode as we talk about our favourite songs from 2011, ranging from indiepop to black metal, with various arguments about The Muppets along the way. We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. This month we're back to the year Colin's most excited about as we talk about our favourite songs of 1996, Including the best songs to receive a concussive head injury to, Songs to listen to at Ians house at 3am and subsequently fail your IT A-Level, & bands Colin apparently recommended to Tracey but has no recollection of.. This month we travel back to 1988 where we've been accidentally downloading the first ever computer virus, playing Treasure Island Dizzy on the Spectrum, & watching Beetlejuice at the cinema. We've also been talking about ambient superstars buying castles, Colin's Orangutan like behaviour, & potentially life saving rap lyrics. Over the next 2 hours (Longest episode yet!) we'll count down our favourite 30 songs of the year, plus we'll also discuss songs we've discovered this year that weren't released in 2020, and a few songs that narrowly missed out on being included. We've changed the voting system a little this year with the help of our friend Peter Latimer who is a maths genius. (you'll often find him stood near the mixing desk at Slowdive gigs inputting the setlist into an excel spreadsheet to predict which song will be the set closer)... We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Ian's wife Lydia, who put the playlists together and distributed them, so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them to Colin's wife Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. Helen also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of the year. The playlist of 20 songs from the other two hosts was scored as usual, our favourite song got 20 points, counting down incrementally to our least favourite which got 1 point. The scoring of our own list of 10 is now slightly more complicated in order to give a truer level of points to our own favourites. So rather than them only being able to score as many points as our 10th favourite in the other list, the points in our own list were distributed as follows - 1st place - 20 points 2nd place - 18 points 3rd place – 16 points 4th place – 14 points 5th place – 12 points 6th place – 9 points 7th place – 7 points 8th place – 5 points 9th place – 3 points 10th place -1 point Peter had also suggested a method to avoid so many songs with identical scores, but it was particularly complicated so we decided that we weren't that bothered about songs in joint positions! We Dig Music - Series 3 Episode 7 - Best of 1990
It's our third anniversary! we've been putting out podcasts for 3 years and to celebrate we're doing one of our infamous Best Of episodes where we count down our 30 favourite songs of a particular year. This time we've decided to go back in time 30 years to 1990, a time where Milli Vanilli were busted for lip synching, Tim Berners Lee set out formal plans for the World Wide Web and an 8 year old Colin was still more interested in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles than music To explain how the voting works, we each picked our 10 favourite songs of the year, then in secret ranked our own out of 10 and the remaining songs from the other two's selections out of 20 (so the highest possible score would be 50 points if all three of us were unanimous on our favourite song and the lowest possible score would be 3 points). Ian's wife Lydia distributed the lists to each of us and then Colin's wife Helen added all the points up and sealed them in envelopes so we didn't find out the order until we were recording and all the reactions you hear are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three seperate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of the year. We Dig Music - Series 2 Episode 19 - Best of 1999 special
We're 2 years old (not literally, please don't close our Twitter account...) so in a break from our usual programming this month we have a VERY SPECIAL EPISODE for you all. It's a bit like our christmas/end of year episodes, but rather than being our favourite songs of the last year, this time we're going back in time for two full decades to the year 1999! To explain how the voting works, we each picked our 10 favourite songs of the year, then for each list we each ranked them 1-10 giving 10 points to our favourite and 1 to the one we liked least on each list. we also had a bonus point we could assign to one song on either of the other people's lists (So Colin could only assign the bonus point to a song on either Tracey or Ian's list). We Dig Music - Favourite Songs of 2018 Super Mega Bumper Xmas Special
It's Christmas! so, this time, we're irking the Daily Mail readers by actually not doing much to do with Christmas at all (Let's call it a Winterval special just to annoy them even more!). It's our end of the year best of 2018 spectacular! We'll be counting down our favourite 30 songs of the year, plus discussing our favourite gigs of the year and also music we've discovered this year which didn't come out in 2018. To explain how the voting works, we each picked our 10 favourite songs of the year, then for each list we each ranked them 1-10 giving 10 points to our favourite and 1 to the one we liked least on each list. we also had a bonus point we could assign to one song on either of the other people's lists (So Colin could only assign the bonus point to a song on either Tracey or Ian's list). Colin's wife then added all the points up and we didn't find out the order until we were recording, so all the reactions you'll hear are genuine. Now admittedly, we are a little bit brutal to some of the songs on the list, but please remember that to be in the episode they have to have been in one of our top tens of the year!
