In this episode, the Candida discusses her personal journey of recognising and addressing burnout and the importance of mental health. She recalls attending a talk on mental health and burnout given by a speaker who visited their organisation. This talk served as a wake-up call for Candida, as she realised they were exhibiting several signs of burnout, such as withdrawing at work, neglecting their appearance, operating on autopilot, and feeling down and upset. Following the talk, the Candida had a coaching session with the speaker who gave the talk. The coach noticed a significant change in the speaker's energy after the session, highlighting how burnout was negatively impacting their overall well-being and work performance. Candida acknowledges that recognising and acknowledging burnout can take time, but they have become better at identifying the signals for themselves. However, it was the mental health and burnout talk that truly helped them realise that their experiences were not normal and that they needed to take time off to address their burnout. Throughout the episode, the importance of embracing creativity in daily life is highlighted. Cybersecurity expert Stephanie Itimi shares her biggest career challenge as a woman in tech. She describes how microaggressions from her manager undermined her confidence and how she used peer reviews to advocate for her work. She emphasises the importance of having a support network and self-awareness to combat imposter syndrome. In this episode, we highlight the significance of diversity and inclusion in the workplace. They argue that creating a fair and equitable workplace requires a focus on inclusion, not just diversity. We emphasize the need for companies to understand their culture and work towards accommodating and thriving with diverse talent. Overall, the episode emphasizes the need for companies to prioritize diversity and inclusion to create a fair and equitable workplace for everyone. We discuss the importance of company culture, especially when a company is scaling. They note that many companies prioritize profits and growth without considering the impact on their culture. They also highlight the role of mid-managers in cultivating and maintaining a company's culture and suggest that a culture audit can be useful in identifying areas for improvement. In this episode of Glowing in Tech, Stephanie Itimi, founder of Seidea and cybersecurity expert, talks with Amber and Jessie about her background in cyber intelligence and her work helping minority women break into cybersecurity careers. She provides insights into the different aspects of cybersecurity, including protecting critical data and systems and physical and technical security. Additionally, she discusses her current research on cybersecurity and physical security for domestic workers in Nigeria and the importance of addressing unfair data collection and surveillance practices. The episode highlights the importance of involving everyone in a company in security to improve overall security. This can be achieved through brainstorming sessions and encouraging team members to share their thoughts on the security policy and framework. By involving everyone, it becomes everyone's responsibility to prioritize security, not just the security team's. The episode acknowledges that not everyone is naturally security aware, but involving everyone in security culture and awareness can make them more security conscious. It is also important to stay informed about the latest threats and tactics by keeping up with information security magazines, cybersecurity ventures, and ICO reports. The episode addresses the issue of a lack of talent in cybersecurity but also emphasizes that talent can be developed through skills training, partnerships, and work experience. Steph runs a successful business that focuses on getting marginalized women into cybersecurity and encouraging them to level up in their careers. The episode stresses that cybersecurity is an open industry for anyone, and it is important to understand the ecosystem and the acronyms. The lack of diversity in the industry is also discussed, with only 20% of the sector being women worldwide, and 80% being men. Steph believes that it is important for women of color and marginalized people to be more involved in cybersecurity to protect the most vulnerable online. The episode emphasizes that building a secure web application is a complex task that requires constant updating to stay ahead of attackers. The threat landscape is constantly changing, and attackers are always finding new ways to exploit vulnerabilities in web applications. Therefore, developers must stay updated on the latest security threats and vulnerabilities through various resources such as conferences, networking, research, and open source. Are you interested in becoming a software engineer? Do you want to learn about the different routes you can take to get there? In this episode of Glowing in Tech, Jessie and Amber will be talking about how they made the career switch into becoming Software Engineers the different routes that they took to get there, and the industries that they're in. In the first episode of season 2 of *Glowing in Tech*, Amber and Jessie delve into their own personal experiences of entering the tech industry. Amber and Jessie met at a boot camp in January 2021. They started with an intense week of learning HTML, CSS, Python, and Git. After that, they continued with part-time learning for about 15 weeks. The conversation covers different routes into tech. While a computer science degree is still a respected route, it is not the only one. Boot camps and self-study are also viable options. Amber recommends researching various boot camps, reading reviews, and understanding the curriculum before committing to one. Jessie and Amber were involved in online communities while they were learning to code. They mention the "100 days of code" challenge, which they both tried but failed to complete. However, they learned that they did not have to do it alone. There are many resources available online and communities to engage with. The conversation ends with a discussion on how to transition into a new role. Jessie discusses moving internally and being supported by her colleagues. Amber, on the other hand, joined a big corporation as her first engineering role. She enjoyed not having a reputation and felt that transferable skills from her previous roles were valuable. In her spare time, she teaches React to people who want to learn the library or folks looking to change their career to tech. This episode of the podcast discusses the importance of learning tutorials and frameworks, even if you feel like you don't have the time. The guest argues that it's important to take the time to learn these things, even if it means doing a tutorial at work, because it will pay off in the long run. Amber and Jessie agree and add that sometimes the documentation for these things can be difficult to understand, so it's helpful to have someone to walk you through it. Michaela speaks about changing careers during the pandemic, working on accessibility in her role, and SWE job applications without having a computer science degree. - The importance of learning new frameworks and technologies, even if you feel like you don't have the time - The importance of being able to read and take notes from documentation when transitioning from front end to back end coding - Michaela's journey into the tech industry, beginning with her engineering background and then moving into software Stay up to date by following us on our socials: LinkedIn: https://uk.linkedin.com/company/glowing-in-tech Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/glowingintech Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/glowingintech TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@glowingintech Work with us: https://forms.gle/eLMUST2puKzuA25c7 Check out Makers and follow them on socials: Website: https://www.makers.tech/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/makersacademy/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/makersacademy Learn more about your ad choices.
