You are not a project that needs to be improved—you are already enough. This episode blows up the myth that worthiness is something you earn by overworking, overgiving, or overachieving. It’s time to stop hustling to be "enough" and start remembering who you are.

Five years ago, the world changed in ways we never imagined. The pandemic reshaped our lives, our fears, our resilience, and our sense of what truly matters. In this episode, we reflect on what we learned, who we became, and how we moved forward. What did we fear then, and what do we fear now? How did we adapt, and what unexpected strengths did we uncover in ourselves? Join me in this personal and collective reflection as we look back on a time that tested us, transformed us, and—hopefully—made us better. This is an episode about survival, growth, and what it means to come out the other side with a deeper understanding of ourselves and each other.

In this episode, we’re diving into the 5 Essentials for Workplace Mental Health and Well-Being as outlined by the U.S. Surgeon General. These five pillars—Protection from Harm, Connection & Community, Work-Life Harmony, Mattering at Work, and Growth Opportunities—are key to creating a work environment where people don’t just survive, but truly thrive. Whether you’re an employee, a leader, or just someone looking for ways to feel more supported at work, this episode will give you actionable insights to build resilience, prevent burnout and compassion fatigue, and create a healthier, happier work life. Here's the link to my episode #81 that I did on the Languages of Appreciation.

An inner critic, we all have one. It's that constantly negative, judgmental voice that's always doubting you. You might be surprised to learn it's actually not you. Your inner critic is a collection of thoughts you've picked up along the way. By learning how to relate to your inner critic (I call mine Roger), you might just make a friend. Check it out!

A trigger is anything—an event, a memory, a sound, a sensation—that activates a strong emotional or physiological response. Triggers don’t always come from major trauma; they can be shaped by past experiences, chronic stress, or even patterns from childhood that taught us what is “safe” and what isn’t. Our brains don’t differentiate between past and present threats as well as we’d like them to. A trigger can make your nervous system react as if you are in real danger, even if you are perfectly safe in the moment. We can't eliminate all of our triggers but we can learn how to be with them. Listen to find out more.

Grief is never just about the loss itself—it carries ripple effects that touch every part of our lives. In this episode, I'll explore secondary losses , the often-overlooked layers of grief that arise after losing a beloved pet or person. From changes in daily routines to shifts in identity and community, I will break down how these losses manifest and how to navigate them with compassion. Tune in for insights on recognizing, honoring, and healing with self-care, so you can carry both love and loss forward in a meaningful way.

If there's one thing I love, it's a great metaphor. Life has a way of knocking us on our butts sometimes. In this episode, I'm diving into what it really means to “get back on the horse” after a setback(or in my case, a real actual fall off a horse!) So dust yourself off, take a deep breath, listen in and let’s ride again!

Mel Robbin's book The Let Them Theory is quite popular right now. But did you know it's based on a poem by Cassie Phillips called "Just Let Them"? This poem gives us the power and understanding of what it means to release control over trying to control other people and instead comprehend our own worthiness that is never in the hands of others.

It's not too late to set your course for the year! Matter of fact, you could do this at any time throughout the year, not just in the beginning. But setting intentions for the year is just like plugging in a destination in your GPS, it sets the course. Here are the questions: What’s the one word or phrase I want to define my life in 2025, and why does it resonate with me right now? (E.g., Freedom, Growth, Boldness) What part of my life feels most aligned with who I truly am, and how can I build on that in the coming year? Where am I playing small, and how can I step into my full potential with courage and confidence in 2025? What’s one area of my life I’ve been avoiding or neglecting, and what small, intentional action will I take to change that? What wild, audacious dream excites me but also scares me, and how will I take the first step toward it this year? How do I want to show up for myself daily—mentally, physically, emotionally—and what rituals or habits will support that? Who inspires me, and what qualities or actions of theirs can I embody to create a life I’m proud of? What’s one area of my life where I need to let go—whether it’s control, fear, resentment, or old expectations—to move forward freely? What’s a risk I can take this year that could lead to incredible growth, even if the outcome isn’t guaranteed? If I were to fast forward to the end of 2025, what three moments would make me say, “This was my best year yet”?

Natural death is an interesting process. The body knows how to do it but that doesn't mean it's easy to watch. With animals we often don't get to see the dying process because we often opt to relieve suffering and provide a "good death" via euthanasia. Witnessing my father in the dying process really got me to think about the contrast between how animals die and how humans do. And I started to wonder about some unintended consequences that can result when we are used to relieving suffering. In this episode I mention the "blue pamphlet" that hospice workers reference and recommend to family members of dying patients. It's called "Gone From My Sight: The Dying Experience" and if you or someone you know has a loved one that's dying, it might be very helpful. You can get it here.

This is it. The final episode of 2024 which means it's time to end the year with intention, let go of anything no longer serving you that you don't want to bring into 2025 and realign with your purpose of serving animals.

It's time for our annual reflection! I love the opportunity to look back and unpack the year. Chances are your 2024 was filled with joys and disappointments. Today we'll focus on more of the joys. I want to encourage you to journal on these 10 questions. 1. What goals did I accomplish this year? 2. How did I step outside of my comfort zone this year and what did I learn from it? 3. What moments will I cherish forever? 4. Were there any relationships I chose to let go of and why? 5. What practices or habits brought me the most peace and joy? 6. How did I strenghten my relationships with loved ones this year? 7. Who were the people who uplifted and inspired me the most this year? 8. How did I overcome fear and doubt this year? 9. What was the boldest decision I made this year and what was the outcome? 10. What is the one bold vision I have for myself in the coming year?

Ever hear something that pierces right to your soul? Well that's what happened when I recently heard this concept of "forgive the present moment". Perhaps it's because it's just what I needed in that moment and I thought maybe you might need it too.

Episode 300 just happens to fall on American Thanksgiving. Coincidence? I think not. I have a very important message for you today. Not just for Thanksgiving but for the entire holiday season and one that can glide you right into 2025 too. Don't miss this one!!!

Over-responsibility is a term I heard recently from one of my coaches use and I immediately thought about how I see it every day in those that work in service of animals. Over-responsibility is when we take on more than is sustainable and necessary and women are often conditioned to do so. Women in helping professions often face implicit expectations to go "above and beyond". In this episode we'll explore why it happens, what some of the costs are and what can be done to break free.

Empathy, the ability to put ourselves in other's shoes can have a dark side; when we take on the emotions of others. That is unhealthy empathy and something that animal workers have to be aware of and guard against. In this episode I'll explain why we do it, what it can result in and how to protect yourself from taking on that which is not yours.

Anxiety is through the roof right now with the upcoming election, 24-hour news, doom scrolling and the fast pace of our society. And animal workers have their own set of stressors that cause anxiety. Everyone needs a safe space to lay down their burdens which is why I created my new group program for non-vets, Wild Hearts Rising. It's a 6-month program and it runs November-April. Registration closes on November 3, so hurry. Here's all the details: https://mailchi.mp/c8434ae6b7e7/wildheartsrising

Today is a special day! I'm announcing my new group for animal workers, Wild Hearts Rising. Groups are not a new phenomena and have actually been in existence for centuries. It wasn't until the 1930's when Alcoholics Anonymous started that group support started to look like what we now know as group programs. My new group Wild Hearts Rising is more than just a group program; it's a sanctuary for those who dedicate their lives to the well-being of animals. It’s a place where the quiet heroes—vet techs, animal caregivers, lab animal professionals, zoo/sanctuary/rescue folks—come together to reconnect with their passion and find strength in a community that understands their struggles. Here, wild hearts rise with a shared purpose, driven by compassion that goes beyond words. It’s about rekindling the fire within, healing the healers, and standing strong for those who cannot speak. Together, we rise, knowing that our love for animals is what binds us, fuels us, and drives us to make a difference. Get all the info here: https://mailchi.mp/c8434ae6b7e7/wildheartsrising

In the wake of the immense destruction and devastation brought about by Hurricane Helene, a client asked me how can she hold space for the suffering others are enduring while also wanting to enjoy her life. What a thoughtful question! And do I have an answer.

I've been in Europe this week and had an experience that reminded me what matters most. It's easy to get upset over politics right now with so much going on but I want to encourage you to remember that we are all just people who want most of the same things out of life.
Thu, September 05, 2024
We make things personal that often don't need to be. Most of that is actually just a nervous system response to something our body deems as a threat. This can get very confusing when it's in regard to others feedback and criticism but when you stay connected to who you serve and what your purpose is, you will find the space through. This energy can fuel you in such amazing ways and I call it "service energy".

This is one of the top 5 most downloaded episodes of the podcast! And that says alot about my listeners. It says that the people I attract care about how they show up at work and want to be the best versions of themselves. We may not be able to change others but we can choose the kind of co-worker we want to be.

This is an episode from the vault but I think it's one we all need to hear again and again. Work-life balance is the elusive thing we're all chasing and yet we've likely never even defined it. The reality is "work-life" balance means different things to different people and will mean different things depending on the season of your life. This is an episode to digest and share with others!
Thu, August 15, 2024
At one time or another we all are faced with the question "Is it time to quit this job?". I'm a big believer in routinely re-evaluating the choices we make, including where, for whom and what our work is. From there you can either decide to make a change or redecide what you're currently doing. You aren't stuck! Enjoy this little ditty from the vault!

My Gemini Girl Kelly Burich and I are back at it this week gabbing about all things self-care. This is the conversation you need to hear. It's part validation as to why self-care can feel so daunting and unacheivable while also part inspiration as we remind you of all of the choices you get to make about how you care for yourself. Listen in!

I've been coaching people who work with and for animals for almost 10 years now. This episode is from 2020 and I stand by all of these lessons still. As a matter of fact, even more so!
Thu, July 25, 2024
Perhaps the deepest self-care is making time to process your emotions. Compassion fatigue is what happens when we get so filled with the residue of repeatedly bearing witness to the trauma of others. There has to be an outlet for your emotions and I hate to be the bearer of bad news but it isn't wine!
Thu, July 18, 2024
This episode is all about self-worth and is one of my absolute favorite messages! It would make a great keynote speech to remind anyone who has ever doubted themselves. This will remind you of what you already know but may've forgotten.

Conflict. Most animal workers don't like it. And we also don't know what to do with it. Do we manage it? Resolve it? Well Kelly and I have all the answers so pull up a chair and dive in!

Believing in yourself and your inherent worthiness is perhaps the secret to happiness. But we all have the critical voice within and also outside of us. We've likely been told we're "too this" or "too that". But the truth is that you're mere existence is a MIRACLE. Listening to this episode is giving yourself a huge gift, a huge hug and a huge amount of love. Enjoy!

Today I have a great episode about intentional thinking. Intentional thinking is the skill of deliberately and on purpose deciding what you want to think. Most people don't know they can do this and while it may be a skill that requires practice, it's a skill that will improve your life 100-fold.

Ever listen to something at a different time in your life and it transforms you? To be honest, EVERY time I listen to what I'm sharing with you in this episode, I am transformed. Because it hits me differently each and every time I hear it. And I've heard it a lot over the past two decades. So today I invite you to take a real listen and see how this lands with you with where you are in your life right now. And if it encourages you to shift, pivot or change your thinking about something in your life. It does for me, every damn time.

Whether you serve veterinary clients, the general public or someone else, you need to be aware of how your policies and procedures may be creating (or adding to) nervous system dysregulation in others. What I'm about to say in this episode may not be agreed upon by everyone but hear me out. It just might have the potential to help!

Today's episode is from the archives of 2022. An Autobiography in Five Chapters by Portia Nelson Chapter 1 I walk down the street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I fall in. I am lost….I am helpless. It isn’t my fault. It takes forever to find a way out. Chapter 2 I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the side walk. I pretend I don’t see it. I fall in again. I can’t believe I am in the same place. But it isn’t my fault. It still takes a long time to get out. Chapter 3 I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I see it is there. I fall in….it’s a habit…but my eyes are open. I know where I am. It is my fault. I get out immediately. Chapter 4 I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I walk around it. Chapter 5 I walk down a different street.

"Compartmentalization is a defense mechanism in which people mentally separate conflicting thoughts, emotions, or experiences to avoid the discomfort of contradiction" according to Psychology Today. I believe compartmentalization can be an effective coping strategy for people who work in the emotionally charged fields of vet med, animal welfare and lab animal research. But it has to be conscious. Listen and learn what I mean by that.

Understanding the interconnectedness of your thoughts, feelings and behavior is the key to self-awareness and empowerment. We all just want others to behave differently so we can feel better. That's the long way.

Neurodiversity describes the idea that people experience and interact with the world around them in many different ways; there is no one "right" way of thinking, learning, and behaving, and differences are not viewed as deficits. (Harvard Health Publishing) Understanding that not everyone's brain works the same is the crux of this interview I have with Nicole Clausen, founder of Veterinary Care Logistics, an inventory management company. You can find out more about Nicole's company, Veterinary Care Logistics at: www.vetlogic.co Book recommendations by Nicole: Here are my 3(ish) book recs: (extra one for personal/romantic relationships) "Us" by Terrence Real "The Mountain is You" or "This is How You Heal" by Brianna Wiest "Unmasking Autism" by Devon Price "The Perfectionist's Guide to Losing Control" by Katherine Morgan Schafler

Euthanizing animals brings up a plethora of emotions including compassion, guilt and doubt. What your relationship is with the animal also tends to dictate what emotional path you may go down. Pet owner, veterinary professional and animal welfare personnel may all feel a different level or attachment or detachment. But what about lab animal professionals? These folks work with research animals to find cures, therapies, discoveries and innovations that extend lives to humans and animals. So how do the folks that dedicate their lives to lab animal research cope with the levels of euthanasia they perform? Especially if it's "just" a mouse.

This week I'm sharing two of my favorite readings. One's that speaks to why as an animal professional you need to make space for grief. This is from Dr. Rachel Remen's "Kitchen Table Wisdom" book and this chapter is aptly named "Professionals Don't Cry". Also in the episode I read from John Roedel's "Remedy", poem #37. Registration is currently open for my 6-month online group for women veterinarians, Living A Life You Love. This group runs April-September and you can get all the info here. Registration closes on March 29, 2024 at 11:59pm ET.

4 years ago this week, the work came to a halt as COVID-19 spread across the globe creating havoc, chaos and a tremendous loss. As someone who cares for animals, you stepped up in such a profound way to figure out how to continue to provide care for animals. It's time to stop and reflect on what we learned and also what we've forgotten as we've resumed our lives post-pandemic.

What you think about money is the basis for your relationship with money. Most people who don't have the financial results that they want can usually trace it back to a limiting belief they have about money based on how they were raised around money and what society has told them about what they can earn, save and/or spend. This episode will help you uncover what your current thinking about money is and how you can change it. I mention Dr. Grace Kim from Richer Life DVM, here is her contact info. https://richerlifedvm.com/

As a New Yorker, we're not known for our patience and I'm not exception. I work hard on this and had an experience recently that allowed me to see how far I've come. I think patience can best be described by this quote, "Patience is the calm acceptance that things can happen in a different order than the one you have in your mind."
Thu, February 15, 2024
We all have tons of thoughts and beliefs that we just take as true, never stopping to question any of them. And these same thoughts and beliefs are the cause of a tremendous amount of suffering. Most include the word "should". They should, we should, I should and you should. Rarely does "shoulding" feel good or lead to connection. Inquiry is a practice of self-realization whereby we explore what is at the root of our suffering, our mind. When we are willing to look at, question and see the results of our thinking, we can find an end to our suffering. This is freedom. You can find out more about Dr. Step Skupin at her website https://theleaderswork.com/.

We've likely all felt entitled from time to time. Entitlement is when we feel like we inherently deserve something, special privileges or have the right to having something. The promotion, respect from others and lighting speed wifi to name a few. So here's what to do about it in ourselves and in our workplaces if it's rearing it's ugly head at work.

We've all had those moments where it feels like the walls are caving in on us and we can't muster an optimistic attitude. Pessimism consists of 3 distinct attributes (the 3 P's) that once you are aware of, you can use to unwind yourself from it's negative grip.

We're drawn to working with animals for many altruistic reasons. Then why can we be so cruel to our fellow humans sometimes? In this episode I'm talking about making generous assumptions about our fellow humans and using the Socratic method of questioning when we do want to speak out.

In working with animals you understand the power of the nervous system. When an animal is anxious, you intuitively know how to calm them using your own balanced energy. In essence, this is co-regulation and you have the ability to do this not only with animals, but with people too.

The holiday season often conjures images of joy, togetherness, and celebration. However, for many, this time can also serve as a brutal reminder of loss and the ache of grief. We're now officially in the holiday season! You get to decide what kind of holiday season to have. If you approach it with dread, it's not going to be enjoyable. But with intention you can decide what you want you might want to let go of that isn't bringing you joy during the holiday season or what you might want to start doing that does bring you joy. Here are the 10 questions I created to help you create the holiday season you crave. 1.What holiday traditions bring me the most joy, and how can I prioritize and incorporate them into this year's celebrations? 2.How can I balance my commitments and prioritize self-care during this busy season? 3.What new activities or experiences can I explore during the holidays to bring novelty and excitement to the season? 4.Who are the people I cherish spending time with the most during the holidays, and how can I create meaningful connections with them? 5.In what ways can I practice gratitude and mindfulness to appreciate the beauty and essence of the holiday season? 6.What are my expectations for the holidays, and how can I adjust them to reduce stress and focus on enjoying the present moment? 7.How can I contribute to spreading joy and kindness to others during the holiday season? 8.What boundaries do I need to set to maintain my well-being and mental health during this potentially hectic time? 9.What strategies can I employ to manage holiday-related stress, whether it's through time management, relaxation techniques, or seeking support? 10.What are the most cherished memories I want to create this holiday season, and how can I make deliberate efforts to ensure those moments happen?

It's just our negativity bias getting in the way of us experiencing more joy. Many animal workers are conflict avoidant. We have deep-seated fears about conflict and therefore avoid it at all costs. What ensues is triangular conversations (she said/he said) that keep our relationships and our personal growth stuck. Today I interview Angie Childers, Life Coach specializing in Leadership, Team Building and Communication. You don't want to miss this one!!! Find out more about Angie at her website https://www.enlighteneddetour.com/ Her podcast, Detour Insights can be found on her website and Spotify.

We all want to be liked but few of us really understand what we stand to lose when we prioritize wanting to be liked over being who we are. The truth is that when you are authentic and are living in integrity, some people won't like you. Decide whose opinion really does matter in your life and whose isn't really that important anyway. This episode will teach you so much about finding the courage to be disliked.

There's a name for grief we don't feel like we're allowed to have or that is not acknowledged by society, it's called disenfranchised grief. It's what I've felt this week in the wake of the loss of Esther The Wonder Pig. I never "met" Esther and yet feel the deep sorrow as the result of her passing. I'm sure many of her 1.5 million followers do too. Disenfranchised grief is what you may feel for a patient of yours that dies, an animal that gets adopted from your shelter or a research animal you've had to euthanize. It's legitimate grief and this episode will help you understand it and yourself more.

I believe social media should come with a warning similar to what alcohol and cigarettes do. CAUTION: Engaging with this could be harmful to your mental health. Especially when we are already feeling vulnerable due to burnout and compassion fatigue that comes with your work of helping animals. Awareness is imperative. Know yourself and when it's not a good idea to engage and curate your feed so that it's content, people and groups that lift you up.

In this age of hustle culture, overwhelm and anxiety, it's no wonder we're burning out in record numbers. We've equated being "productive" with success. I've got news for you, the two have nothing to do with each other! I want to invite you to consider "unproductivity", the concept of resting, doing leisure activities and perhaps just goofing off. You'll have to fight your inner critic though because it's been gathering opinions of others for decades about how if you're not being productive, you're a horrible human and even worse.....lazy! Let's blow it all up and redecide!

Guilt is an emotion that is no stranger to animal workers. Those that work to improve the lives of animals can be exceptionally hard on themselves and often find themselves wrestling with feelings of guilt. And guilt can be one of those emotions that we need some strategies to help loosen it's grip on our psyche.

In a culture that for women glorifies perfection, it can feel unnerving to consider that our actions or ourselves could be "good enough". For most women (and some men) that is an impossible concept to make peace with as they constantly beat themselves up to do better and better. But "good enough" isn't mediocrity, instead its the space between unrealistic and realistic. We often use the terms emotional and mental health interchangeably but they are actually different. They can influence and impact each other but understanding the difference can allow you to seek the appropriate type of support and resources based on your specific needs. Living a Life You Love , my 6-month program for women veterinarians is now OPEN for registration. It only opens twice a year and won't be again until 2024. Click here for all the details. I'm an introvert. I love being by myself but too much of anything isn't good, including alone time. We need community. We need each other. We need to feel safe with others that we feel connected to and a part of. In Okinawa, Japan they have a term "moai" which refers to a small social group that supports one in mental, emotional, physical and even financial ways. It's one of the reasons Okinawa is a "Blue Zone" and is home to more centenarians that almost anywhere else on earth. I think we all need a "moai" of open-minded, hopeful, supportive, positive, soul sisters to walk through the hard times and help us celebrate the good ones. We're hard-wired to thrive in small groups and if you're a woman veterinarian, I may have just the thing for you, my 6-month group program, Living A Life You Love. What perspectives have I left out? 10.If you say yes to this, what are you saying no to? 11.What needs to change so that I look forward to doing what needs to be done?

We are all socialized to rely on others for approval and validation and that makes us highly reliant on the opinions, feedback and actions of others in order to feel supported and good about ourselves. That presents a big problem when others don't say or do what we want. This episode will help you understand why we are all so reliant on external validation and how to become your own champion of belief in yourself and support.

Kelly and I met at Catskill Animal Sanctuary (CAS) where at times she was responsible for the lives and wellbeing of over 300 animals, the animal care staff and the buildings and grounds. She has her own unique experience of burnout and grief associated with both her personal life and her work in animal welfare. Now she's coaching others to help them find joy and meaning in their lives and perhaps some teeny, tiny frogs! You can find out more about Kelly at www.kellymullinscoaching.com

10 years ago I decided to invest in a Peloton bike. It was before anyone had one, I'm an OG! How could I believe in something and be willing put down hard-earned cash on something that wasn't even out on the market yet? Faith. Believing in something without any evidence. You can choose to either believe it will work out well or you can choose to believe it won't. I'll always choose the former, even if I'm wrong.

When faced with difficulty and challenges we can either be the victim of our circumstances or the hero. And there may be time you truly were the victim but we can always change the way we tell our story. You survived what happened in the past and you're surviving now, that's heroic. This is powerful work that you can do on anything you're struggling with now or things from your past.

We all react sometimes when unexpected things happen. It can be very valuable to think about what could go wrong with a big event or important situation you might have going on in your life. It's important to think about it not to fixate on all the "bad" things that could happen but to make space in your mind for all the possible outcomes. Because if you do, you give yourself the ability to respond vs. react. And responding almost always has a better outcome for you and everyone involved.

Your self-concept is a collection of the perceptions you have about yourself. What you think about yourself informs who you believe yourself to be. Confidence and self-confidence are all based on what you tell yourself repeatedly. Our self-talk if not steered toward the positive can lead us to a negative self-image, lots of anxiety and lack of belief in ourselves. The Self-Talk Jar is a tool you can use to shift and change your self-talk. Here's the handout to help you make your own Self-Talk Jar.

Does this sound familiar? When I finish this class/lose the weight/hire the associate/the kids go back to school....then I'll be happy, feel relaxed and be able to chill. The problem with this way of thinking is that 1.) it relegates your emotions to the circumstances of your life (which is not true) and 2.) it delays your joy to the future that keeps it perpetually out of reach. In this episode I will teach you how to stop postponing the joy that's available to you right here, right now. The book I mention in this podcast is Microjoys by Cyndie Spiegel . We tend to not notice when we are well until we are sick. We tend to not notice having a full staff of employees until we don't. We tend to not pay much attention to our pet behaving until they misbehave. Ultimately we tend to not pay attention to what's NOT happening in any moment, in other words, the absence of difficulty, challenges and hardship. That is positive absence and it's so worth paying attention to. Let me explain how!

Guilt is like a heavy backpack strapped to your shoulders, filled with stones of past actions and regrets. Carrying it around weighs you down, making each step feel burdensome. It tugs at your every movement, preventing you from moving forward freely. Only by acknowledging and unloading the stones of guilt can you lighten your load and walk with a renewed sense of freedom and self-compassion.

The Window of Tolerance(WOT) was created by Dr. Dan Siegel as the optimal zone in which a person would be able to function and deal with day-to-day stress most effectively. It is the optimal arousal state in which we feel our emotions are tolerable and we can manage the experience we are in. When our nervous system gets activated and our brain goes into survival mode and we will often go outside of our WOT to either a hyper-arousal state (anxiety, irritable, overwhelmed) or a hypo-arousal state (shut down, withdraw, disengage). But we can get ourselves back to our optimal zone. Listen and find out how!

For animal workers purpose and passion go hand in hand. When we are aligned with our purpose we can't help but also feel the passion that comes with living out what we believe we are here to do. But some things can get in the way. Emotional labor may or may not be a new term for you. Although it's recently taken on a different meaning, it's original intention is when we regulate or suppress our emotions at our job. I've noticed that when something causes us shame, guilt, sadness, frustration or anger, we either: 1. Don't acknowledge it and distract ourselves with other things 2. Ruminate on it and can't let it go Most people do one or the other. What I'm proposing in this episode, the 5-Second Funeral, will allow you to do just the opposite. Clearly you are someone who is here to make their mark on this world. You do big work. You save or improve lives. You help provide a good death. That’s BIG work my friend. BIG work comes with BIG emotions. And those BIG emotions don’t always get the attention they deserve. The BIG emotions I’m talking about are grief, loss, sadness, disappointment, shame, regret and guilt. Working with animals puts you in close contact with all of these emotions. Let's talk about what to "do" with them. Registration for my 6-month group program for women veterinarians, Living a Life You Love, closes on Friday, March 31, 2023. Click here for all the info.

It's no coincidence that 60-80% of animal workers are introverts AND 60-80% of animal workers experience burnout. In this episode you'll learn: -what I believe we need to know as introverts around burnout -the 4 kinds of introverts -how to love, accept, understand and have self-compassion for who you are and see your introversion as your greatest strength and something that needs caring for a little differently than others Introvert quiz: https://susancain.net/quiet-quiz/ Introvert, social anxiety or depression? https://youtu.be/vhglKx0EwZA

Compassion fatigue and grief often go together. When we don't make space to feel our grief, we get filled up with no room left to care. Working with animals exposes you to a lot of grief because you are exposed to a lot of death. But death isn't the only source of grief. We can experience grief related to any kind of loss. Regardless of the kind of loss, if grief is present there are needs a grieving person has. They are as follows: 1.To have your pain witnessed 2.To feel your feelings 3.To release the burden of guilt 4.To be free from old wounds 5.To integrate the pain and the love 6.To find meaning in life after loss To receive my bi-weekly e-inspiration emails, text REKINDLE to 66866.

"We all agree that forgiveness is a beautiful idea until we have to practice it." ~ C. S. Lewis Isn't that the truth? Forgiveness of self and others requires that we let go of something, something we've been carrying for a long time. Anger, hatred, regret or guilt are commonly what we're holding on to. And while we may be justified in feeling as we do, we are the only ones feeling those feelings. The person who hurt you isn't. So we get to decide whether we want to forgive ourselves for our mistakes and the mistakes of others. Forgiveness isn't condoning. Forgiveness is for YOU. In this episode I explore forgiving yourself and others and remind you that you never have to if you don't want to. You get to decide. Get on my email list by texting REKINDLE to 66866.

Leadership in vet med (and globally) is male-dominated and homogeneous. But vet med and animal welfare are predominately female. Why aren't more women securing leadership roles and what is the cost to women in these professions if their views, ideas and needs aren't being represented at the leadership level? In this episode I speak to Dr. Jenni Rizzo, emergency veterinarian and founder of Lone Star Veterinary Academy. The holidays are tough for many people and can be even more so if you work with animals. Euthanasia rates seem to increase right around the holidays, stress and obligation seem to rise as well. It's no wonder that so many animal workers tell me they feel higher levels of compassion fatigue this time of year. It makes sense. I have some suggestions in this episode of things I think can help you. My two favorite charities I mention in this episode are: Catskill Animal Sanctuary (where I was a tour guide for 6 years and am still a supporter of) https://casanctuary.org/ and Happily Ever Esther Farm Sanctuary (H.E.E.F.S), home of Esther the Wonder Pig https://www.happilyeveresther.ca/ Your money goes directly to helping rescued farmed animals! One of the hardest things to do is love ourselves unconditionally. We are our own loudest critics. But what if the things you don't like about yourself actually serve you in some way? What if the parts of you that you don't like are just part of the 50/50 of life? No one is perfect. No one. When you can see that the things you think are so wrong with you are actually an asset, well that is when you grow. Exponentially. Join me to explore: -the things you don't like about you -how they may actually be helping you -how to love yourself not in spite of those things but because of those things -how loving yourself allows you to love others more The end of the year is coming and I have a Word of The Year contest that I want to invite you to. But you have to be on my email list. So text REKINDLE to 66866 to get on my list.

Animal workers are tired. Your work has been insanely busy and so many of you are telling me you feel feeling drained and exhausted. And look! Here come the holidays. So what do you need to do this year to make it more enjoyable for yourself? What do you need to say no to? What do you want to opt out of? You can, you know. I give you permission to and want you to give yourself permission to drop the "should" and "have to's" this year and instead find what you actually want to do and not do. This is Holiday Self-Care.

When times are tough, when there are challenges and struggles on the horizon in your work or personal life, you have to ask yourself one very important question. What will you do to support yourself? We are always being intentional but sometimes that intention is AGAINST ourselves rather than FOR ourselves. This episode will help you change that! The science is pretty clear. Gratitude is hugely beneficial to your mental, physical, emotional and social health. But it takes an intentional focus on what's good, rather than our brain's default obsession with what's awful and wrong. The good news is when we dwell in the good, we change our brain structurally and actually increase our capacity for positive emotions. And this is hugely beneficial for people who work with animals. I'm declaring November as a month of gratitude. Join me! You can get the 30 prompts at www. rekindlesolutions.com/192. It seems noble to believe that taking care of others is more important and necessary than taking care of yourself. But it's not true. You have to question your limiting beliefs that result in you feeling exhausted, drained and burned out. In this episode we explore: -how the opposite of what you believe may in fact be true -how taking on more than you can handle doesn't in fact HELP others, but HARM them -how you have to know when enough is enough Please text REKINDLE to 66866 to join my e-inspiration list where you'll receive insightful, empowering and inspiring emails to help you with your work and your life, every Monday and every Friday.

Some emotions like anxiety, fear, overwhelm and helplessness tend to hijack both our mind and our physiology. Our body goes into "survival mode" and often we can't access our higher, reasoning brain in those moments. So the ability to adopt a different thought or mindset may not even be within reach, until we settle our bodies. In this episode I will teach you how to ground yourself (aka get back in your body) and from there you can work on the cognitive approach of considering a shift in perspective. THIS is how to have emotional health. Don't skip this! To join my bi-weekly e-inspiration list, text REKINDLE to 66866.

When we're feeling sad, angry or stressed, we tell ourselves that the wine, ice cream or "retail therapy" makes us feel better. But it doesn't. I've done "all the things" to try and escape my feelings and would tell myself that food/wine/weed made me feel better but it wasn't the food/wine/weed that made me feel better. In this episode I share with you exactly what IS making you feel better when you're drinking the cabernet, eating the cookies or scrolling on social or whatever your thing is to try and not feel the emotions that are there. In this episode I also address: -how shame then gets in the way of you changing these behaviors that you don't want to be doing -how anger feels like a "safer" emotion to feel rather than sadness, grief, disappointment and fear -how to use your emotions and the information they are offering you in the moment you're feeling them Join my e-inspiration email list and receive inspiring emails specifically for animal workers delivered right to our inbox every Monday and every Friday. Is it selfish to work on yourself? To invest your time, energy, effort and/or money into improving yourself? Is "me time" selfish? These are all the questions we may find others or ourselves asking as it relates to personal development. I think it's a good question to ask. And my answer...I will reveal in this episode so listen in! To join my biweekly e-inspiration emails, text REKINDLE to 66866.

I've never been one to play by the rules! National Veterinary Technician week is October 16-22 but I'm jumping the gun with my guest this week Anna Santos. Anna holds a BS, is an RVT and a LVT and has worked in veterinary nursing for over 20 years. Her varied background demonstrates all that is possible in a career such as veterinary nursing. We talk about all the things in this episode: -the impact of compassion fatigue and burnout on vet techs -the need for strong women leaders in veterinary nursing -how compassion fatigue impacts the clinical tech vs. the lab animal technician -career paths -how she has learned to take care of herself to be sustainable in this field I mentioned a Ted Talk I recently watched that highlights how veterinarians (and vet med) infiltrates all aspects of life. You can check that out here . Also, registration for my 6-month group coaching program for women veterinarians, Living a Life You Love is open until 9/30/22. Click here for more info.

You're really good at fixing animals by relieving their pain and suffering. You help them live good lives or have a good death so it's natural that you'd want to fix people too. It's natural that you'd want to help them feel better and have better mental and emotional health but this isn't your responsibility nor are you capable of doing this for others. Negative emotions in others isn't a problem to be solved. Part of life is pain and struggle. We can be supportive while not trying to fix others. That's our responsibility. Are you a female veterinarian who is wanting support, community and a safe space to share challenges and successes with other empowered women veterinarians? Then check out my 6-month coaching program, Living A Life You Love. It's for introverts, people who don't think they are "group" people and for feminists in vet med. Limited spots available. Registration closes on 9/30/22. www.rekindlesolutions.com/lalyl

Your Core Values are the fundamental beliefs, principles and guidelines you live your life by. We all have them whether we are aware of them or not. But consciously identifying them will help you in all areas of your life. At work, in all of your relationships and in decision making. And it's equally important to choose Core Values for your organization, veterinary practice, rescue, shelter or even your department in a large corporation. Core Values help employees see how they are a part of something bigger than themselves and it allows everyone to see if the decisions and protocols are in alignment with the values of the organization. Here's the list of Core Values for you to choose your Personal Core Values. You can also use this list for team-building to have employees help to decide on Organizational Core Values. https://rekindleresources.s3.amazonaws.com/CoreValuesLargeList.pdf Are you a female veterinarian (or identify as such)? Registration is open for my 6-month group coaching program, Living A Life You Love. But it's only open for 2 weeks and spots are limited. Here are all the deets! www.rekindlesolutions.com/lalyl

Today's episode is all about the impact you make for animals. How often do you stop and think about it? I asked a question to my Monday and Friday email list recently. I asked them to send me a reply to this... I know, without a shadow of a doubt, that what I do for animals matters because... The responses blew my mind and I wanted to share some of them with you today so you can connect with others that do similar work but also so you can own how what you do matters. Enjoy! Many people who work with animals say to me "I don't feel the highs and the lows anymore, I just feel numb." That is what can happen when we disconnect from our emotions, we don't feel anything. But life is about feeling the highs, the lows and everything in between. In this episode: -I'll share why your work with animals often results in you feeling numb -How to actually feel your feelings -How gender socialization impacts our emotions -The two aspects that lead to feeling numb I reference the Feelings Wheel in this episode. Psychological change doesn't happen overnight. But we wouldn't want it to because we'd miss the learning in it all. It's fair to say that the path to my own psychological growth has been a rocky one. I've failed more times than I can count, I've not kept my word to myself thousands of times and I've engaged in behaviors I wanted to stop and then hate myself over and over and over again. Your story doesn't just have one chapter, it has five. Keep reading. Don't put the book down yet. It gets so much better!! Here's the poem written by Portia Nelson that I share with you in the episode. An Autobiography in Five Chapters Chapter 1 I walk down the street.

Today's guest is Dr. Lauren Smith, relief veterinarian and founder of the Vetitude. I recently read a blog post of hers that made me reach right out and invite her on the podcast. The post was titled "Let's Not Forget About the Human-Animal Bond" whereby she exposed a mindset that the client's needs are secondary to the pet's. She makes the case that what is good for the client is most often also good for the pet and how to be more accommodating towards the client's needs. You can follow Dr. Smith on these social channels: Facebook https://www.facebook.com/thevetitude IG https://www.instagram.com/thevetitude/ Also, check out the blog post we discuss in this episode: https://thevetitude.com/lets-not-forget-about-the-human-animal-bond/

It's not that it's hard to say "No". Everyone can do it but what's hard is the feelings that come in the aftermath of saying no. Particularly guilt. But guilt doesn't actually come from saying no, it comes from what we think about saying no. When you change what you tell yourself about saying no, it becomes easy. When you reassure yourself that saying no is not only ok but necessary, you become someone who says no to things and yes to themselves.

I've taught about feelings a lot on the podcast but today I'm teaching something I haven't taught before. Emotional health doesn't happen by accident, it requires our intention and learning how to process negative emotions. I'll guide you through that giving you an example from my current life that I've been managing a lot of anxiety around. Check out the Feelings Wheel here .

Taking care of yourself can't be an afterthought but it requires two things: attention and intention. Attention to what is going to be or could be challenging and what you're going to do about it (intention). We often get blindsided by situations, trips or events that we didn't think through and then find ourselves bamboozled with lots of anxiety, stress and overwhelm. I want to encourage you to start thinking ahead and planning for these types of things. You know yourself best. Look over past experiences to see where you've gotten hung up and found yourself feeling out of sorts. And follow the guidelines I walk you through in this episode to create and develop a plan for yourself. A way to care for yourself and support yourself in these types of situations. This is self-care at its most fundamental. To join my bi-weekly email list, text REKINDLE to 66866.

Louise Hay is arguably one of the first self-help teachers dating back to the 1970's. This week I was scrolling through her bestselling book "You Can Heal Your Life" when I stumbled on a chapter entitled "Resistance to Change". In my work as a life coach I see a lot of resistance. We resist what the clients are doing, how are co-workers are behaving, what are boss says and even things in the world that we can't control. Resistance is exhausting. Our emotions and behaviors can affect each other positively or negatively. We call this emotional contagion and it turns out that it's pretty normal to be affected by others mood, facial expressions and body language. As social creatures our brains are designed to pick up on and even mimic others. This is great when we are surrounded by happy unicorns. Where it gets problematic is when we are surrounded by other humans! In this episode I address negative emotional contagion and although we can't control others, there are many things we can do to combat negative emotional contagion in the workplace.

When you work with animals you can have many unconscious beliefs about their lives. Especially ones that relate to the impact you believe you have over their unintentional death. Beliefs like "If I make a mistake, an animal could die" are not helpful to think and yet we all nod and agree when someone says it. In this episode I explore these unhelpful unconscious beliefs, how they lead to perfectionism, fear and anxiety and how to instead create confidence, empowerment and trust in yourself. This episode is not about judgment of clients and their judgment of you. This episode is about the judgment that’s coming from "inside the house", if you will. The judgment we have of each other in the vet community. Humans are judgmental. But I want to raise your awareness to it and I want to ask you to recognize it in yourself, in your practice or organization, with your colleagues and I want to ask you to make a decision to stop it. Because it’s hurting you.

Women tend to think they are failing at it all and not measuring up to what they think being an ideal mom is. But few have actually questioned their beliefs around what a "good" and "bad" mom even is. I want to encourage you to question that. Journal on these 4 questions. Think about them deeply. And then redecide for yourself what makes a "good" and a "bad" mom. 1. What has the world told me makes someone a good mother? 2. What has the world told me makes someone a bad mother? 3. What might I not be seeing because of my beliefs of good or bad? 4. What do I want to decide for myself makes someone a good mother? It can be tempting to want to save your kids from their negative emotions. I want to encourage you to support them through feeling them. Here are some helpful questions to guide that support. -Can you name the feeling you’re feeling? -Where in your body do you feel it? -What does it feel like in your body? -Can we just sit with it for a moment? -Can we see that although it doesn’t feel great, it’s ok, you can handle it?

Most people think feeling doubt, fear or discomfort is a reason to stop. Sometimes it may be. We have to know the difference between fear due to danger and fear due to not wanting to be uncomfortable. But growth doesn't happen when we are comfortable, it happens when we feel the fear and doubt and uncertainty but do it anyway because we know the situation will result in our growth.

If you work with animals, you've chosen a highly emotional field and if you don't learn how to feel and process your emotions, you will suffer greatly. I don't want you to suffer. Most of us don't know how to actually sit with and feel what we're feeling in any given moment because we've never been taught. So instead we resist what we feel and try to change how we feel through any and all means possible. Growth happens when we learn how to surrender to what we are feeling and instead allow our feelings to be present and flow through us. This skill is ESSENTIAL for your work and for your life. Let me teach you how! Veterinarians! The deadline to join my new 6-month group coaching program Living A Life You Love is Monday, April 4, 2022. Shame just might be the most uncomfortable emotion to feel because it comes from thinking that who we are is bad or wrong. And shame loves to hide in silence and secrecy which makes it feel even further isolating. But shame is just an emotion and one we can learn how to be with and bring into the light. From there we can begin to unravel it and find our way to the real truth, which is that all along, you've been whole, worthy and perfect. Boundaries tend to be one of the most challenging things in vet med and among other animal workers but maybe they don't have to be. When we are honest with ourselves, we can be honest with others about what's ok with us and what isn't. A life without boundaries results in a tremendous amount of resentment, pent up anger and frustration. But there is another way! Join me in this interview I did with The Whole Veterinarian, Dr. Stacey Cordivano where we dig into the depths of boundaries, respect and self-worth. When we don't use our voice as women, we become invisible and aren't able to make an impact. There are many reasons why women are not speaking up, from fear of criticism to lacking in confidence to feeling outnumbered by men. But by not speaking up we do ourselves a disservice as well as the world around us. Women's voices need to be amplified and we can all impact that. Check out this episode to find out how.

With every ending is a new beginning. Sounds cliché? Well maybe so but the truth is that when something ends, a life, a job or even a relationship, something new does start. We may not be able to see it at first or even want to and that's ok. New beginnings take their own sweet time and all you have to do is hold the possibility that something else could emerge. Check out this episode to learn how to navigate endings and new beginnings and what the ONE essential ingredient is.

We've all been in "survival mode" for the past 2 years. According to Maslow's Heirarchy of Needs, until our physiological and safety needs are met, we aren't able to adequately self-actualize. I experienced just this when a major ice storm hit our town and we lost electricity, heat and running water for three days. Without my basic needs being met, I couldn't focus on anything else. This might help explain how your life may've felt like it's stalled a bit during the pandemic. Take a listen. We all carry around with us emotional wounds from our past. Childhood traumas when we didn't have the tools and/or support to be able to process the emotions we were feeling at the time. If these issues aren't healed, may feel stuck and triggered by similar situations, others reactions towards us or even grief. Healing our old wounds is important for our mental health and wellbeing. In this episode you'll: -be able to see if you have some old wounds that need healing -see how they often show up as "always" and "never" -hear about one of my own old wounds that needed some salve -learn the two things we must do to move forward from our painful stories Don't forget to subscribe to my M & F e-inspiration emails by texting REKINDLE to 66866.

Your self-image, what you think about yourself, literally creates your entire life. How you dress, style your hair, what the inside of your car looks like and even what your desk looks like all says something about how you think about yourself. In this episode I want to challenge you to not think these are just shallow things but consider how they are impacting the way you are showing up in your life and how you feel about yourself Your self-image matters because YOU matter. Take a listen to this episode. I promise it will have you thinking differently about things you perhaps thought didn't matter that much!

Compassion is the care and concern for others that are in pain or struggling. Self-compassion is that care and concern for ourselves, particularly when we are facing adversity or failures of any kind. It probably won't surprise you that women tend to be harder on themselves than men. As women are socialized to be nurturing towards others and self-sacrifice, it's no wonder that compassion towards self isn't inherent for many women.

As important as it is to reflect on the past year, it's equally important to set your sights ahead on what you want for your future. No one has a crystal ball and knows what 2022 holds but that doesn't mean you can't create some intentions for yourself. In this episode I walk you through The Year Ahead worksheet I created to guide you in deciding on your Word of The Year, what you want for your self-care, what relationships you want to improve and what advice and wisdom your Future Self has to help you navigate whatever may lie ahead in 2022. Life is half wonderful and half super-challenging. No one escapes that despite what you see on social media or in tv commercials. The problem is we don't often see that side of other's lives so no wonder we think it doesn't even exist. In this episode I share with you how I navigate the half of my life that is a struggle. I want to be a real example of what's possible even when we are struggling.

Animal workers are "fixers". You make animals feel better, live better and sometimes die better. But when it comes to grief, our own or other's, there's no making it better. One of the hardest things to do is to just BE with someone in their grief. In this episode I give you practical tips for how to BE with others in grief. And if you're the one grieving, these tips can help you too.

Procrastination and inaction impact us all from time to time. But when we want a certain result and we aren't taking an action to make it happen, we can start to turn on ourselves. The way to ending procrastination and inaction is not what you think. The solution isn't to just force yourself to do more or do the thing you're avoiding. While they may work in the short-term, it won't for long. In this episode I'll share my 3 Step Process for turning procrastination and inaction into action and results.

We all have expectations of others. Things we want them to say or do. We want veterinary clients to be more patient and to show more appreciation. We want our co-workers to say "thank you" and respond to our emails right away. But what we THINK we want, is not actually what we want. Listen to this episode to find out what we are really after when we have expectations of others. It may surprise you!

Working with animals whether it's vet med, animal welfare, research or rescue/advocacy all has something in common (other than the animals!) and that is working with people. We can't truly help the animals if we can't figure out how to work with the people alongside of us. This episode is about the 5 most important concepts that when mastered, create the most compelling and effective work relationships. 1. Self-awareness 2. Being brave 3. Building connection 4. Knowing your heart state 5. Understanding leadership contagion This is an episode designed to share. With your teams, colleagues and co-workers. Use it as a jumping off place to have deeper conversations and self-reflect. Better co-worker relationships leads to better mental health!

How you start your day matters. Especially given the largely unpredictable and sometimes chaotic nature of vet med, animal welfare and other work that revolves around animals. When I found out that all the thought leaders in the personal development space have morning rituals, I decided to try it myself. I'll never go back to not having them!

We all want to live our best life but sometimes the voice in our head is busy telling us how we aren't good enough. You have to make a practice out of proving your brain wrong in what it tells you about yourself. In this episode I share with you a brain hack I created. I call it the "I Don't" List. It's a way to reflect on your past and instead of feeling inadequate about yourself, you can instead feel proud and see your accomplishments so much clearer.

No wonder we are so confused and reluctant about self-care. The wellness industry has told us that it's about bath bombs and candles but it's not. Well it could be. I like to think much simpler than that. In this episode I'll teach you: -the connection of self-care and self-love -where self-care really begins -the 3 thoughts that are getting in your way and how to overcome them -my new favorite self-care mantra!
Thu, October 07, 2021
Do we have a say in how we experience our life or is life just happening to us and we are at its mercy? Definitely the former. What life does is present you with neutral things that your brain then interprets as positive or negative. So your experience of your life is actually based on your brain's perspective! And perspective is not static. It's actually 100% within your control.

Today I interview veterinarian, biology teacher and author Dr. Christine Hedrick about her new book "Into The Fold". It's a beautiful, heart-warming story about a group of women who have many differences but are bonded by that which they have in common, a desire to belong and feel supported. One of the characters works in a veterinary practice and is deciding on whether or not to apply to vet school. "Into The Fold" has a great story but also shows the joy and challenges of veterinary medicine. In this episode we talk about: -why she decided to write this book -what the title means -what she wanted to convey about vet med in it -how the characters spoke to her -how she has been personally affected by mental health issues How to get the book: A full list of retailers can be found on the book's Goodreads page: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/57677288-into-the-fold?from_search=true&from_srp=true&qid=ywmcEfAGOA&rank=4 It can also be purchased from Christine's website: https://christinehedrick.com/ There's also a Facebook page for "Into The Fold" https://www.facebook.com/DrChristineHedrick

Just like making time to exercise, meditate and sleep, I believe we have to make time to feel our feelings. Compassion fatigue can be offset by making room for the vast array of feelings we feel when being in service of animals. In this episode I'll share with you how I'm doing this, how I'm attending to my emotional self-care. I invite you to listen and see what you can apply to your life. Feelings are meant to be felt. You're a helper a healer and a caregiver to animals and maybe to people too. This is a challenging time for many animal workers. Vet med and animal welfare are extremely busy and extremely understaffed. This is a time to amp up your self-care. This is a time to ask yourself what you need in order to keep doing what you do. But helpers, healers and caregivers are often the worst at taking care of themselves. In this episode I'll share with you the 5 reasons why and what to do about each of them.

These are crazy times in the world and likely in your work too. Emotional whiplash is what happens when we go from one extreme emotional state to another. Like going from a euthanasia to a puppy wellness visit. But just because we can, doesn't always mean we should. This episode will have you thinking about how to better cope with situations like this and also perhaps prevent some of them.

Self-belief is simply believing in yourself and your worth. Unfortunately it's not that common. What's more common is wanting others to believe in us and be supportive of us. But we have it all backwards. What we need to create is belief from the inside.

This week on the podcast I'm getting real vulnerable and telling you what it's like to be me. Someone who is knee-deep in grief and loss over the sudden loss of my mom. Whether you have lost a human or an animal, this episode will likely help you realize that you are not alone. How does the Hero's Journey relate to personal development and transformation? Essentially the Hero's Journey is the psychological undercurrent of humans. We all share this process as we strive for transformation in our lives. Regardless whether that transformation is a new job, a new degree or a new relationship, the Hero's Journey is at play. It's a roadmap for self-development and I love it so much. Hope you do too! My website: www.rekindlesolutions.com

I did intend to record this episode but I was so inspired by Simone Biles' actions this week in Tokyo at the Olympics. She withdrew herself from several events due to her mental health. She was quoted in saying her "psychological state put her in significant physical risk". I think we can all learn a lot from her courage, bravery and vulnerability to honor herself on one of the sports world's largest stages, the Olympics. Go Simone!

Compassion fatigue and grief go hand in hand. I didn't always realize this but I do now. Working with animals exposes you to grief all of the time. Grief is the natural response to loss. When we work with animals we may lose them due to death, euthanasia, adoption, animal transfer or job change. In this episode I'm going to share with you some of the different types of grief that you can experience as well as share my own personal journey with grief.

Women have a love/hate relationship with self-care. They want to love it but they hate that it feels so unattainable and like another thing on their to-do list that they are failing at. In this episode I explore how the socialization of women has affected the way we feel and think about self-care and how to move beyond the outdated misogynistic playbook we've all been handed. It's time to re-write the book for ourselves ladies. Worksheet is at www.rekindlesolutions.com/fsc

Self-care gets a bad rap because we think it's just about self-indulgence like mani's and pedi's. And there's nothing wrong with mani's and pedi's but self-care is much more than that. Self-care is about how you take care of you and your physical space. Clutter is the antithesis of self-care. It weighs us down and prevents our energy from moving freely. In this episode I'll share with you: -my 3 step process for de-cluttering -how often you should do this -why it matters -where to begin Also, be sure to subscribe to my bi-weekly e-inspiration by texting REKINDLE to 66866.

Does it feel like your life is a constant to-do list that you never complete? You're not alone. When is the last time you felt joy, playful and true pleasure? I'm not talking about sexual pleasure, I'm talking about when is the last time you had unbridled fun? And women especially put themselves last on the to-do list so the fun they want to have never comes. We have to change that. ASAP.

What if the deck is stacked against women and the whole "work-life balance" thing isn't even attainable? Or maybe we have to redefine what balance looks like and why we want it. The women I meet in vet med, animal welfare and the research community often feel like they are failing at everything. They are told they should be able to have it all and yet feel like it's an impossibility for them. And maybe they are right. In this episode I explore: -what work/life balance means to people -what we really want -how the game may be unfair -how the socialization of women stacks the deck against them -what the "invisible workload" of women is -how to make changes julie@rekindlesolutions.com to inquire about 1:1 private coaching. The only constant is change. Boy I hate that quote! Actually my brain hates that quote. Our brain is dead set against change in any and all forms so no wonder we feel such resistance to it. But change is a part of life and just because our brain hates it doesn't mean we don't have to learn to navigate it. In this episode you'll learn: -why we resist change -what your brain makes change mean -the four phases of the Change Cycle -3 ways to navigate change

What do you do when life hands you lemons? When your dog dies? When other things aren't going the way you want? You can think the Universe is conspiring against you, that God hates you or you can think that it's time to make lemonade!!! You can't control life but you can control your experience of it. You can control how you think about it, how you feel about it and how you respond to what happens. And you must!

I'm often asked how to know if someone we work with is struggling with compassion fatigue or other issues. Most of the time it can be very hard to tell but with awareness we can know what to look for. While cleaning out my Mom's house I came across a piece of writing that deeply touched me. It was raw and vulnerable and spoke so clearly about mental health issues and how we all wear "masks" (not ones to prevent COVID) to hide ourselves behind sometimes. This piece of writing I have now discovered was written by American poet Charles. C. Finn. I want to give him the credit he deserves.

Does our belief in God impact our compassion fatigue? Does a belief system that includes faith have an affect on how we feel in our work with animals? Do God and compassion fatigue intersect or are they unrelated? All great questions that I'll tackle in this episode. This episode is not meant to sway you one way or another. It's just meant to give you some things to think about. I'll share with you my beliefs and that's all they are, my beliefs. Ultimately we all get to believe what we want about this life, the afterlife and God.

You've likely heard the phrase "good vibes only". But life isn't good all of the time. It's half good and half not good. So what are we supposed to do with the half not good? Slap a positive, silver-lining thought onto it? As a coach who teaches thought work, it's often confused that I teach that we should just think positively all the time. Nothing could be further from the truth.

We don't often think that the emotional pain we feel has a purpose, but it does. The sadness, loss and grief we experience in life has purpose. In this episode I will tell you what I believe it is and how that can help you as you experience emotional pain in your life. Some things are certain in life, emotional pain is one of them. Get comfortable with your discomfort and your entire life will change.

I have many things to yet figure out as I walk alongside of grief and I invite you to join me in this episode and perhaps learn about your own dance with the most uncomfortable and painful emotion of grief. Most of the humans I know are not human BEINGS but human DOINGS. They are running from work to errands to responsibilities/obligations and feeling exhausted. And it's no wonder! Working with animals can be intense. It requires a lot of your physical, mental and emotional energy. And while compassion fatigue is complex, what increases your susceptibility is neglecting your own need for slowing down and creating some "white space" in your life. In this episode I'll share the #1 reason why we're all running ourselves ragged and how to stop.

Compassion fatigue is often coined the "cost of caring" because of the impact that witnessing others in pain or distress has on the caregiver. But there's another "cost of caring" related to veterinary medicine and animal welfare work and that is the financial limitations of the pet owner. There is no question that the ability to afford veterinary care is an obstacle for many and because of that pets may not get the treatments, medications or procedures they need. Clients may even opt for euthanasia because of financial constraints. Are there solutions? You bet! And today's guest, Suzanne Cannon Co-Founder of VetBilling and I talk all about it. In the last episode I talked about Stage 1 and 2 of Emotional Intelligence (EQ): Self-awareness and self-management of your emotions. This episode is about Stage 3 and 4, social awareness (be aware of what others are feeling and needing) and relationship management (bringing together your awareness of your own emotions and those of others to create productive relationships). Working with animals requires working with people. Working with people requires EQ.
Thu, March 04, 2021
Emotional intelligence (EQ) is the fancy phrase for how aware you are of how your feelings and actions and those of others in a way that results in positive interactions. I wish we learned EQ in school because it would solve a LOT of problems. In this episode I dive into the first two stages of EQ, Self-Awareness and Self-Management. There's no question that EQ is a much needed skill to live a happy and fulfilled life. It will make you a better human, partner, parent and leader. So pop your earbuds in and take a listen!

How comfortable do you feel expressing yourself at work and not fearing punishment, rejection or embarrassment? How comfortable do you feel admitting you made a mistake or don't know how to do something even if you've been shown before? If you feel comfortable doing so than CONGRATULATIONS you are experiencing "psychological safety" in your place of work and it's a beautiful thing. I'm willing to bet that is not how many people feel working in veterinary practices, biomedical/biotech organizations and in animal welfare. My returning guest this week is Josh Vaisman of Flourish Veterinary Consulting. Josh is a lot of things (even a beekeeper) but most relevant for this convo is that he is an expert in leadership and helping veterinary teams thrive. The "hustle for worthiness" is a phrase I first heard from Brené Brown where she talked about either owning who we are and our story or spending our time hustling for our worth. Most of us (especially women) have been socialized to believe our inherent worth comes from what others think about us, how helpful we are to others and how much and what we get done. It's all externally derived and we have to appease others in order to finally rest in the knowing that we are "enough". But that knowing usually doesn't come and so we stay on the hamster wheel of the hustle. No wonder so many animal workers feel tired, defeated and overwhelmed!

I continue my conversation with Kelly Burich, animal health professional and Organizational Leadership expert, about the role that women play in leadership, what gets in the way of that and how to overcome the obstacles that may exist. Whether you work in vet med, animal welfare or any other animal-related field, chances are good it is predominately women. Women must be aware of the places where sexism exists and how to move beyond the things that have held us back.

Women as leaders is not new but with the swearing in of Madame Vice President Kamala Harris last week, it's on so many of our minds. But not only in politics do women have a rightly deserved "seat at the table". Women now dominate the student body of veterinary schools, are owning veterinary practices like never before and are running Fortune 500 companies. The future is not only female, so is the present. Join my guest Kelly Burich (animal health professional an MA in Organizational Leadership) and I as we talk this up!

If you're feeling burned out right now, you're in good company. For so many of you, your work has gotten very busy and the workload has increased drastically. That sets up the ideal environment for burnout. Too much demand and not enough resources to meet that demand. What starts to happen to dedicated, caring and hard-working animal workers is that they then start to feel inadequate and like a failure because they can't keep up. That thinking creates more burnout and so the cycle feeds itself. Unless we do an interrupt. This episode is an interrupt. I'm pretty sure Albert Einstein was a Life Coach but didn't know it. He said, "We can't solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created it". Exactly. My compassion fatigue work spans 3 different aspects of animal workers: veterinary medicine, animal welfare/advocacy and lab animal research. I'm so proud of the work they all do each and every day to help animals and people. But today's episode is in honor of my beloved research community. For those involved, the use of animals in research is not benign. It weighs heavy on their hearts, they experience compassion fatigue at high rates and often feel unable to talk about it to others for fear of judgement and misunderstanding. This episode is equally for them as it is for anyone, as we've all benefitted from their work in advancing science, finding cures and creating innovation in medicine and technology. At the time of this recording we are currently still in a pandemic, but the first shipments of vaccines were shipped this week! You can thank these heroes for the work they do that will eventually allow us to be able to hug each other again. I couldn't be more proud of them.

If you regularly overeat, over drink, spend too much time on your phone, over work or spend too much shopping online, I have news for you... You have a normal functioning brain. We're living in a world filled with highly concentrated things that naturally only create more desire for them. I will share with you a 4-step process for stopping an "overing" behavior. It's actually the exact process I used to end a 3+ decade bingeing habit.

Compassion fatigue and mental health issues in veterinary medicine span the globe. But we don't all have the same resources or even access to the same resources. Today's guest is Yukari Ogawa, LVT, CCFP and the CEO of Translation for Animal Professionals where she helps translate for the Japanese veterinary community. Yukari, based in New York is also the co-founder of an online community, CVP just for Japanese veterinary professionals where she is helping to raise awareness for compassion fatigue and professional grief in and among veterinary professionals in Japan. Post-Traumatic Growth(PTG) is the positive psychological change that some individuals experience after a life crisis or traumatic event. So it is not merely a bouncing back to the level of functioning prior to the trauma, but rather a sense of positive growth beyond pre-trauma functioning. There are some factors that influence PTG that I'll share with you in this episode.

You were born full of self-belief and self-worth. You were born believing you were the most incredible person that's ever lived. You were born loving yourself unconditionally. What happened? You started to borrow other's opinion of you. Usually not the most favorable of ones. And so ensued a process of moving away from yourself and into self-criticism, doubt and self-judgment. But it can all be reversed. Follow the 3 steps I have laid out in this episode and you will reclaim your self-worth, that which was yours from the very beginning! Worksheet: rekindlesolutions.com/87

It's election season here in the U.S. and everywhere you look you will see heated conversations. I've had them too and if I'm honest I haven't always liked the way I've behaved. So I've tried to do better. I've tried to listen more and try to understand others who don't support the same candidate I do. It's not easy but if you want to maintain relationships with others who have differing opinions than you (in politics and in other areas), you have to learn how to have these conversations. This episode will show you how!

We're going to the horses in this episode! I interview mom, equine veterinarian and podcaster Dr. Stacey Cordivano. I love learning about things I don't know much about and equine medicine and being an equine veterinarian is certainly one of those things. We talk about: -when she first knew she wanted to be a vet -sexism as an equine veterinarian -what she learned (or didn't!) about wellbeing from her mentors -how compassion fatigue looks in equine medicine and factors that contribute -euthanasia of large animals and special considerations -her journey to personal development and what made her start a podcast -what lights her up! In 1992 Gary Chapman released his best-selling book The 5 Love Languages outlining how romantic partners expressed and experienced love. While I was working on a recent presentation for a group of veterinary hospital managers I thought about these "love languages" as it related to how we all feel appreciated at work. Well come to find out Gary Chapman had thought of this too and in 2011 he partnered with Paul White and wrote The 5 Languages of Appreciation in the Workplace. Like "love languages", the 5 languages of appreciation are: 1. Words of Affirmation 2. Acts of Service 3. Tangible Gifts 4. Quality Time 5. Physical Touch You can access a 30-question quiz for your staff/team or to find out your own "language of appreciation" at www.rekindlesolutions.com/language.

We are all energy. The animals we work with are energy too. So it stands to reason that energy-based practices make sense to offset compassion fatigue and burnout. Think of it like another tool in your self-care toolbox. This episode is an interview with Emily Carveth. Emily is a multi-disciplinary professional with over 15 years of experience in veterinary medicine. She is passionate about the role of self-care in mental health and wellness for veterinary professionals. Currently she is obtaining her certification as a Compassion Fatigue Professional, along with her Master's of Social Work at Fairfield University. She plans to specialize in Veterinary Social Work. Emily recently became a certified Usui Reiki Master, and is an Emotional Freedom Technique Certified Practitioner. In her spare time, Emily loves singing, dancing and spending time with her wonderful partner Dan and their cat Rowland. What makes one person willing to reach out for help and someone else not? It often comes down to being willing to experience vulnerability rather than shame. Many still think we're supposed to figure our lives out all by ourselves. I don't believe that. At all. I believe we are meant to lean on each other at various times in our lives. And I can tell you with absolute certainty that if I weren't for all the times I did the "leaning", you wouldn't be listening to this episode because there'd be no podcast to listen to!

Feelings (or emotions) aren't all or nothing. You can carry some of the heavier ones (like grief and sadness) around with you while you still live your life. While you still go to work and feed your kids and even go to the grocery store. The key is to just keep allowing them, feeling them and not trying to make them go away. This episode will explain how you can feel both sadness + hope, grief + relief and even rejection + excitement at almost the same time! And feeling one doesn't discount the other. Check it out!

As a pet owner to a special needs dog, I've experienced my own compassion fatigue at times. It's not always easy to care for pet's that require a lot from us. It's always rewarding but not always easy. If you're a pet owner check out my 10 tips in this episode. If you're a veterinary professional or work in animal welfare, this episode will show you the "other side" of compassion fatigue. One we don't talk about all that often. Life is beautiful and challenging in equal proportions, even during a pandemic. But are you looking for what actually might even be "good" during this time? Are you allowing your brain to entertain the idea that even in a time like this, we can find joy, happiness and excitement. There is equal part light and dark. Don't forget to give equal time to looking at the light. I've added new webinars to my website. If you'd like to bring one to your veterinary practice, organization or institution you can get more info at www.rekindlesolutions.com/webinars.

One of the skills I've honed as a life coach is the ability to hold the neutral space of non-judgment. Our brain will usually look for and focus on evidence to prove our belief's true. It's in this way that often we don't see things as they are, we see them as we think they are. Very different realities. There's a cost that comes with being judgmental in our work and in our private lives. It most often causes a great deal of pain and struggle for us. In this episode I will share with you what the space of being non-judgmental could look like in your work and your life. It's always an option and while we might not choose it every time but allow it to be an option for you.

Bully's have existed since the beginning of time. Bullies do and say things that we perceive as mean, hateful and aggressive and we become victims to their actions and find ourselves suffering. I look at bullying a little different than most. So how do you deal with it when you're being bullied? Does your veterinary practice or workplace have a bullying policy? All good questions and in this episode I have answers.

You may think perfectionism makes you better. You may think it allows you to take better care of your patients, the animals in your care and people who are looking to you for help. But you'd be wrong. Perfectionism doesn't make us better. Instead it keeps us trapped in fear. Fear of making a mistake. Fear of the self-loathing in the aftermath of making a mistake. Fear of not being "enough". In this episode I will expose you to the truth about perfectionism and show you how it differs greatly from the desire for excellence. One is about you and the other is about others. Check it out!

Our relationships with other people is all based on what we think about them. If our thoughts are positive, the relationship will also be so. The same goes for if our thoughts are negative about the other person. The relationship also will be negative. We mistakenly think that a relationship with another exists outside of us but it doesn't. We are just two people having thoughts about each other. This is how you can still have a relationship with a person or pet that has died. Also important is the relationship you have with yourself. It's the longest one you'll every have so it's worth spending time on and becoming aware of what you think about yourself vs. what you WANT to think about yourself. In this episode I'll help you: -with your relationships with others (even those you deem "difficult") -with how to let others be who they are and not be angry about the way that they are -understand when boundaries come into play -to have a better relationship with yourself Upcoming CE Virtual Event July 26, 2020 Understanding the Power of Emotions www.lonestarvetacademy.com

Dr. Wanda West and I continue our conversation around how the uprising for racial equality feels different. The momentum behind the Black Lives Matter movement is growing and White people are engaged like never before. Dr. West also shares how racism is by no means an American thing as she's experienced it overseas as well. We talk about how the Black community and especially Black women are talking to young Black boys to prepare them for a world that currently does not always treat them fairly. And we'll end our spirited conversation with a piece on RESPECT that Wanda's grandkids created. They are words for us all to live by!

We all have a story. Of where we came from and the obstacles we've faced and overcome to get where we are today. Being a White woman I have never had the color of my skin be an obstacle. My guest in this episode, Dr. Wanda West, DVM, PhD, DACLAM cannot say the same. As a Black woman she faced many instances of racism growing up in the south. As a Black vet student and eventual veterinarian, she did as well. Veterinary medicine has been called the whitest profession in America. According to the AVMA, Black Americans have never comprised more than 3% of all veterinarians. In Part 1 of this two-part episode Dr. West and I talk about: -her earliest experience of racism in the first grade - going to an integrated college for her undergrad degree - experiencing both encouragement and discouragement to pursue a career in vet med as a woman and as a Black woman - attending what was then a mostly White Mississippi State for vet school - experiencing racism as a veterinarian

The term "white privilege" was coined in the late 80's in an article by Peggy McIntosh, Associate Director of Wellesley College Center for Research for Women. Essentially these are unearned privileges that whites have benefitted from for years and years. Most of them are invisible to white people as we only know our own experience. This is a time to not get defensive but to remain open to learning all that you can about racial inequality and all of our unconscious biases. In this episode I share the list that Peggy McIntosh made of her daily effects of white privilege. I've also added some of my own.

Can women really have it all? A career they love, motherhood and a life they love? Absolutely but it will require releasing the idea of doing it all perfectly. How does a busy veterinarian, wife and mother of a 5 yr. old fit in self-care, work travel, relief work and time for family? Very carefully. Listen in on my conversation with Dr. RuthAnn Lobos, lead veterinarian at Merrick PetCare as we discuss it all.

I continue answering questions from the audience this week. Questions about handling negative feedback/reviews from clients, feeling jealous of those the are staying home during this time, feeling frustrated at work, self-care and feeling guilty for enjoying yourself during the pandemic while knowing others are struggling. In honor of #BlackLivesMatter and to show my solidarity with all black people, I end this episode with a reading of a Langston Hughes poem," I,Too".

All of us that work with or for animals are extremely passionate about what we do. We can also start to think what we DO (aka our job) is who we ARE and that simply isn't true. To get more clarity around this we have to talk about Purpose. Your purpose ultimately is being human and congratulations because you've already achieved that. Now you can decide who you want to BE in your life. That is your Purpose. Who you get to be while you do what you do. What a privilege to discover this!

Your brain loves to prove itself right. Any belief you have about yourself, others or the world your brain will always be trying to provide evidence for how it's true. But what if you use this FOR you rather than against you? What if you believe harder in yourself? What if you looked for what you're grateful for rather than what you want to be different right now? The results could just be amazing!

Right now many pet owners are financially struggling. Feeding their pets can become a real challenge for many people at a time like this and offering support can make the difference between them keeping their pet or surrendering it to a shelter. In this week's episode I share inspiration from my podcast listeners and my weekly email recipients. We all chose a Word Of The Year in late December to anchor us and set our intention for what we wanted for ourselves in 2020. This week I asked us to revisit that word and see how it's showing up as a source of inspiration and as an anchor in these turbulent times. These are people just like you. They love and work with animals just like you. They wrestle with compassion fatigue just like you. And like you, they have something to share. Check it out!

Not everyone is struggling right now. That's not to say that if you are there is something wrong with you. Hardly. But is it possible to THRIVE right now? Maybe. One thing is for sure and that is no matter what your circumstance, self-compassion is available to you. This is the time to support yourself and disengage from the self-critical and punitive mind that we humans have.

Could anything good come out of a pandemic? Could we be better on "the other side" of it? These are interesting questions to ask at a time when if feels like all COVID-19 is bringing is sickness, death and darkness. But it's also bringing us the best of humanity. People rising up in so many ways all over the world to be a bright light in an otherwise dark time. Listen to this episode and you just might feel a little lighter!

I know. It can feel like we are on an emotional rollercoaster with all that is happening. One minute we feel like we have it under control and the next we find ourselves feeling panic, worry or anger at others who aren't heeding the guidelines to keep us all safe from COVID-19. It's all normal, I assure you. In this episode I will offer you some guidance around: -how to deal with others that aren't doing what you want -how to come out the other side of this pandemic a better version of yourself -what to do as it relates to your self-care during this critical time -how to balance the worst and best-case scenarios in your mind

COVID-19 may've interrupted life as we know it but it doesn't have the power to make us feel angry, anxious, stressed, uncertain or afraid. We ultimately are always in charge of how we feel. Be mindful of what you are thinking now more than ever and refrain from "borrowing" thoughts that lead to panic and anxiety. Now is the time to focus on what you WANT to think and how you WANT to feel in the face of this pandemic. In this episode you'll learn: -About my own journey of emotions around this -Some helpful tips in navigating these uncertain times -Why finding your "anchor" is important -The online course Compassion Fatigue Rx is open for registration and I've added 6 live weekly webinars to help support you during this time (www.rekindlesolutions.com/enroll)

What if what you need to heal yourself from compassion fatigue and burnout is right outside your door? The more disconnected we are from nature, the more we suffer as a species. When is the last time you felt connected to the natural world? Hugged a tree? Went barefoot in the grass or in the sand? Chances are it's been too long. Compassion fatigue, while it's a normal consequence of the work you do with animals, can be offset greatly by learning how to embody resiliency. Join me as I interview former LVT and fellow Martha Beck Wayfinder coach Angie Stegall (www.angiestegall.com) where we talk about how nature can be our greatest gift and asset to help combat not only compassion fatigue and burnout but so many other issues we face in our lives today. In this episode you'll learn: -Why we need nature now more than ever -What resiliency really is -How connecting with nature is what your soul is longing for -What grounding is and it's benefits -How nature can enhance your mental health and overall wellbeing -What to do if you don't like nature -How slowing down in this fast-paced 24/7/365 society is the answer to so many of your troubles

"Comparison is the thief of joy". Right on Theodore Roosevelt! According to social media it looks like every friend and person you follow is having an amazing life, except you. You may compare yourself to other veterinarians, techs, managers or directors and feel you come up short. We buy into stories about ourselves that are decades old and simply not true. It's time to change all of that. It's time to end the game of compare and despair. Check out this episode if you want to stop comparing for good. You'll learn: -why comparing yourself to others sets you up for failure -the inequities of comparing ourselves to others -how comparisonitis is related to worthiness -how to move away from comparison and back to joy -how to stop focusing on what you DON'T have and instead to what you DO have -what it means to "turn people into trees"

Sometimes people are going to be wrong. Veterinary clients, people on social media, someone visiting your shelter or even someone in your personal life. They may just be wrong about you or about the situation. We tend to think we need to prove to them that they are wrong so we can be right. Well guess what? There is no prize ribbon from the Universe for being right. Instead we can just let people be wrong about us and know deep in our bones who we are and what we stand for. Check out this episode if you've ever caught yourself needing to be "right"!

It's said that many veterinary professionals and other animal workers are introverts. Being an introvert or extrovert only means where you get your energy from, internally (introverts) or externally (extroverts). So many of us use our personality type against ourselves. It's just who you are. Our workplaces are filled with both introverts and extroverts and we need to understand ourselves and each other and see how this relates to compassion fatigue.

When we are feeling compassion fatigue we often think we've run out of compassion and empathy. But that's never actually the case. Neither are finite resources. What has happened is that we've become overwhelmed with unprocessed emotions and therefore we feel numb. So we have to learn that we are abundant in things. Not only the tangible like money but also the intangible like time, love, patience, compassion and empathy. We have to learn how to feel our feelings and then start practicing living in abundance. It feels amazing!

It's a fact that there are more euthanasias during the holidays than at other times of the year. Financial pressures, guests, busy schedules and family members coming home all can play a role in why. Animal shelters see more surrenders during this time of year too for a variety of reasons, one being they were given a pet as a gift and didn't want it. Whatever the reason, the fact remains that we have to come to terms with the increased incidence of euthanasia during an already stressful time of year for so many in vet medicine and animal welfare. This episode can help!

You likely fall into one of two categories: you make tons of decisions and have "decision fatigue" or you lament about all the decisions you have to make afraid you will make the "wrong" one. But what if there are no "wrong" decisions and instead there are just the decisions we make? What makes a decision "wrong" is just what we think about it. In this episode I will teach you how to use your body to help you make decisions and you will learn that there are no "wrong" decisions. So make the decision to listen to this episode right now!

Misanthropy is the hatred or distrust of humans. When we are exposed to situations where humans have harmed animals we can start to believe that "People Suck". Our brain then goes to work to constantly seek evidence to prove that thought true. The problem is that in order to truly help animals, we have to also help people. And believing that "people suck" ultimately only hurts us and the animals we are so desperately trying to help. Check out this episode and share it with your friends!

We've been culturally conditioned to view failure of any kind as a bad thing. But what if it's actually essentially for our growth? We're either succeeding or learning, seeing things as a failure is totally optional. So what are you willing to "fail" at in order to grow? I'll share my list of 10 with you in this episode. Check it out!

The opposite of compassion fatigue is compassion satisfaction and we don't talk about it enough. It's an antidote to compassion fatigue in a sense. Compassion satisfaction is what lights us up about our work, what brings us joy and meaning and fulfillment. We have to deliberately look for it because we're hard-wired to see the negative but you'll find it's all around you. Worksheet can be found at www.rekindlesolutions.com/31

When we blame others for our negative emotions, we embody victim mentality and essentially abdicate all of our power to the other person(s). But here's where we go wrong, believing someone else's words or actions causes our negative feelings. They don't!

What if we talked about mental health issues like we do the common cold? What if we weren't afraid to be open, honest and share these parts of ourselves with each other without shame? If we ever want to change the stigma of mental health issues in vet medicine and in our society, we will have to get real. In this episode I get real with Dr. Bethany Sabatino and her own journey with mental health issues and how she remains mentally healthy in veterinary medicine.

I believe much of why we get compassion fatigue is because we experience so much loss in our work with animals but we never actually grieve. We may intend to but something else or someone else needs us. And there's not way through but through. In order to heal ourselves, we have to feel what we're feeling. We have to make time to be with ourselves and our emotions. It might just change everything!

Are you a people pleaser? Women are socialized to be people pleasers, to be nice, to be accommodating, to not "disappoint" others. But if we are doing and saying things just to influence how others think and feel about us, we are being dishonest. Listen to this episode to learn how to stop.

What binds us as animal workers is animals and euthanasia. Euthanasia means "good death" and it is just that, no matter the circumstance. But in order to see that we have to see our limiting beliefs and question them. We also have to come to our work always from a clean headspace vs. a dirty one. Check out this episode to find out what that means and also to remind yourself of the enormous positive impact you make even when the result is euthanasia. Self-care is essential in any helping profession but especially those that deal with animals. And it's not bubble baths and mani/pedis! Why we have to prioritize our self-care and essentially replenishing ourselves is because we work really hard taking care of others and unlike a machine, we need downtime and time to rejuvenate. Self-care isn't a "nice to have", it's a "need to have" in order to not feel drained and depleted. I'll share with you my #1 Self-Care Practice in this episode! www.rekindlesolutions.com

Your brain is like a puppy. An untrained puppy! It is more interested in survival than your happiness so if you want to grow, be happy and have a semblance of wellbeing, you need to train it. Yes it takes effort and yes it takes practice but so does learning how to spay a cat or running a CBC in your lab or training a dog! What you focus on becomes your reality, your brain likes to focus on the negative. Time to train it! Sit. Stay. Listen.

So many of us are wanting our job to make us happy. It's not our job's job to make us happy. Our emotions don't come from our circumstance, remember? They come from within us, they come from what we think about our job or our boss or our co-workers. Looking outside of yourself to feel the way you want to feel is a dead end. What you're looking for.....is already inside YOU! You just need to learn how to access it. This episode will teach you how.

To define mental health as the absence of mental illness is subpar yet that's what you'll likely find as a definition. In veterinary medicine we have an alarming suicide rate and yet not much in the way of how to create mental health for oneself. Where do we learn how to be mentally healthy? This podcast is one such place. In this episode I will share with you the components I believe make up a large portion of mental health.

Emotional whiplash, it's what happens when we go from one extreme emotional state to another. Like going from a euthanasia to a puppy wellness visit. But just because we can, doesn't always mean we should. This episode will raise awareness of whether we are experiencing this, what to do if we want to prevent it and how to better care for ourselves when it does happen.

We can't escape being on the receiving end of other's judgement. In the age of social media and endless surveys, we all have a place to voice our opinions about anything and everything. Veterinary clients may or may not've been happy with the service they received at your practice. So what do you do when someone voices their opinion about you? When they judge you? Listen and find out!

Humans are judgmental by nature and while that serves us in some ways (keeping us safe from harm) it's unhelpful as it pertains to judging pet owners. When we judge others we can no longer help them because it limits our ability to connect. And connection is essential to helping animals and people. In this episode you'll learn how to avoid judgment and find more compassion for even the most challenging humans!
