When you’re listening to Michael Mosley, it doesn’t take long to understand why he’s one of the world’s most prominent doctors. He’s risen to fame as a BBC broadcaster, documentary maker and inventor of the 5:2 diet, and he has an incredible knack for communicating health research and knowledge in a simple, usable way. This episode takes a look at some really key elements of health: breathing, sleep, diet and exercise. Michael gives his most effective breathing technique to transform your life and help with sleep, talks about the three most important types of exercise (including the one you’re probably not doing but definitely should be), and discusses what an ideal day looks like from a health perspective. Along with tackling these big topics, Michael drops little gold nuggets along the way. Like the Japanese community that’s living longer because they essentially fasted in post-war years, how to figure out if you’re getting the sleep your body needs, and how long you should wait between waking up and your morning coffee. There’s so much in here you can use. ************* RESOURCES: Michael’s coming to Auckland for his highly acclaimed speaking event, A Life Changing Experience, on March 15. Dan Ebbett has come a long way since the days of wearing snowboarding goggles to the movies. As the founder of BlockBlueLight glasses, he’s a pioneer into the effects of devices, technology and light on sleep and health. Dan developed his range of light-blocking glasses after struggling with chronic insomnia, eye strain and migraines. He changed the game by discovering the widespread impact blue light was having for people, and developing glasses that were focused on effectiveness rather than appearance. This is one of those under-appreciated health areas that a surprisingly large number of people struggle with. Dan and Art talk through: Dan’s personal journey with discovering blue light glasses, and how quickly they worked for him What blue light is and how it affects people The impact of device settings and “dark mode” - whether they actually do anything The physiological impacts of taking in blue light at night, and how it prevents sleep by impacting hormones How the sun gives off different light frequencies, and how the brain interprets them to know what time of day it is How to wear blue light blocking glasses, and why you shouldn't wear them all the time How the skin has its own circadian rhythm, and what that means for controlling lights inside at night Why good blue blocking glasses shouldn’t have clear lenses Light control apps The effect of windows and clouds on light absorption Take home tips for controlling the effect of light in your everyday life Indicators you’re struggling with the effects of blue light, including stress and anxiety Red light therapy - what it is, what the benefits are (including red light saunas) (Disclaimer about the sound - sorry about the weird background noises in this one, turns out that a leaf blower waits for no one!) *************** Please support this podcast by checking out our episode sponsors: -Blis Probiotics: https://blis.co.nz/ They kindly provided a discount code to our listeners - ‘WELLANDGOOD10’ for 10% off all products (excludes ElitePRO). -Mitchells Nutrition: https://www.mitchellsnutrition.com/ They kindly provided a discount code to our listeners - ‘WELLANDGOOD15’ for 15% off all products. *************** RESOURCES: Because he’s a legend, Dan’s offered a 15% discount code for Well & Good listeners fo

We’ve all heard the arguments against eating meat. Diana Rodgers is combating this massive issue one issue at a time - nutritionally, environmentally and ethically. She’s spent decades in food research and nutrition, including in her book and film, Sacred Cow . Diana is adamant that eating meat is not only healthy, but it’s imperative for humans and for the environment. Diana talks about: Issues with the science Where anti-meat agendas started, and why it’s problematic How meat prevents dangerous monocultures that a lot of plant-based foods are based on Carbon sequestration from animal farming vs trees The problem with unhealthy meat alternatives (chips, processed foods and plastic wrapping) The ugly reality of allowing animals to die naturally If you’ve ever thought about how much meat you eat, or if you should cut back on meat, this is a great guide to the entire issue as a whole - not just one or two aspects of it. ------------------- To check out the Cronometer that Diana mentioned in the pod, head to cronometer.com . “One piece of cake is not going to heal or harm you - it’s just cake.” This is why we love Michelle Yandle - the nutritionist who encourages people to eat what makes them feel good. Michelle is the woman behind empowered eating, which is all about understanding what you’re eating, and eating whatever makes you feel good. The only rule is that there are no rules - listen to your body, eat what you feel like, and if it doesn’t work for you then don’t beat yourself up about it. She talks about how polishing off a block of chocolate doesn’t make you a bad person, and how the key to balanced, healthy eating is understanding why we feel like having a binge, and treating it as a learning experience. This is a really liberating approach to nutrition that is as much about mental health as it is about physical. They talk about the lifestyle impacts of their dietary requirements, particularly being social and on the road, how they get all their nutrients, and have some helpful advice for anyone looking to try out a plant-based diet. They share a unique and compelling story, which they tell without wanting to influence anyone else; they just talk about what works for them and their three kids. They’re the founders of consumer goods company Thank You, which donates 100 percent of its profits towards poverty causes. These guys are an incredible couple. Their story is one of absolute dedication to humanity. Daniel & Justine will not stop until they have changed the system; redistributing wealth from consumer spending. The open conversation covers the toll that the hard work has had on them personally. Justine talks openly about her battle for a sustainable lifestyle, which came to a crescendo when she suffered a massive burnout in 2017. We are beyond thrilled to have Kelly Noonan Gores on the show today. Kelly is best known as the woman behind the well-known Netflix documentary Heal . As producer, director and writer of the documentary, Kelly explores the body’s ability to heal itself, in a way that often challenges modern medicine. Kelly joined us from a beach in Malibu, talking about her experiences of making a documentary, what she learned about stress, toxicity and pressure, quantum physics and how she spent an hour and a half listening to a wizard answer just one of her questions. Down to earth and relatable, Kelly talks about the common things people do to recover from terminal illnesses, and how health doesn’t have to come from a pill or a medicine. There’s a lot to tie in to Kelly’s approach to health, but Kelly does it really easily. Hope you guys enjoy it. https://www.healdocumentary.com/about.html https://www.instagram.com/kellygores/?hl=en Hosts: Art & Matilda Green Produced by: Roar Collective

How does an odd-jobs guy turn himself into an international business coach? Find out with Jim Hughes, the man behind The Untamed Entrepreneur. Jim is a jack of all trades when it comes to his mentoring. He talks about things like exercise, fitness, and diet, but also finding your passion, being in a state of flow, and how to use the two sides of your brain in making decisions. One thing he’s really big on is not being overly regimented with any one exercise or wellness technique. His approach is do what feels right, when it feels right - and don’t beat yourself up if you don’t quite achieve what you wanted to. This is business and life advice for everyday people. Jim’s relaxed approach makes improvement seem really achievable, instead of some far-off goal. He’s encouraging and funny, and provides a really good reminder that you don’t have to do absolutely everything in order to make progress. This episode, quite simply is just awesome life advice! Enjoy this time with the man embracing his new nickname, The Computer Gypsy. To kick off the sixth season of Well & Good we are so excited to chat to our season sponsor, the founder of The Avo Tree Thorley Robbins, in what could possibly be described as the most millennial episode of all time where we cover all things avocados! Thorley Robbins grew up on his parent's orchard in Katikati, and had a passion for horticulture from a very young age. Five years ago, sick of the disappointment of over-ripe, pre-squished supermarket avocados, he started sending his freshly picked, non-cool stored avo’s from the Bay Of Plenty straight customers' doorsteps. He started The Avo Tree with one simple goal in mind - providing fresh, quality avocados to Kiwis all over NZ. Thorley chats about where the business idea started, the difference between The Avo Trees avos and the ones we buy from the supermarket, the best way to keep your avos fresh for longer, and all of the nutritional benefits they have. We also chat about all the exciting things in the pipeline for The Avo Tree. Today we’re speaking to one of our meditation teachers, Georgia Vavasour. Georgia is an expert in vedic meditation – don’t worry she explains in the episode what exactly that means. Georgia is not what you’d expect from a meditation teacher, and she’s the first to acknowledge that. She talks about how she found meditation after growing up with anxiety and depression, then dealing with cancer and divorce. We spend a fair bit of time talking about stress, which is something that meditation helps a lot with. The stresses of day to day life might seem like a lot, but she’s really interesting talking about what she calls adaptation energy, and how we can give ourselves the tools to control our own stress. Georgia talks about meditation for ‘normal’ people - accessible, effortless and extremely worthwhile and also meditation for children (gosh it is sweet). Georgia is relatable and cool and we were left in awe of her knowledge. We all know industrial farming can be bad for the environment, but there is a better way of doing things that is quickly gathering momentum. Regenerative farming has been linked to skyrocketing profits, better ecological outcomes and improved human health...and it’s not that hard. Nicole Masters is the founder of Integrity Soils, a company that specialises in what’s called regenerative agriculture. She’s a published author, and travels across NZ, Australia and North America helping farmers to not only improve the environmental impact they have, but also increase their profit margins too. It is safe to say that Nicole truly is leading the charge for regenerative farming, and some of what she says is truly shocking. The chemicals we’re putting into the land are having long lasting health effects, not to mention causing lasting damage to the land. Her revelations are concerning, but her positive, solutions-focused outlook will help to give you the tools to live better. Disclaimer: please excuse the audio quality for the first 6 mins of this interview – we promise it gets better after the 6 min mark. Imagine working for skincare companies and coming up with an amazing solution that did great things for the skin. Then imagine those companies only using small amounts of that solution in their products, so they had nowhere near the effect they could have. This is what happened to Ross Macdougald. Ross got sick of that, so he went and started the Biologi skincare range. Armed with powerful, plant-based products, and a whole lot of insider knowledge of the industry, he’s on a mission to prove natural skincare products are a whole lot better than synthetics. He talks about the benefits of natural products, what synthetics actually have in them (um, car coolant??), and gives a few easy tips for product-free skincare. Matilda and Arts chat with Camden who is a passionate advocate for our oceans and a driving force behind positive solutions in the Pacific Region. Howitt is Co-Founder and Coastlines Lead of multi-award winning charity Sustainable Coastlines, and an Edmund Hillary Fellow. Since 2008, the charity group has delivered large-scale coastal clean-up, waterway restoration, education, capacity development and data collection activities around New Zealand and in its branches in Papua New Guinea and Hawaii. A regular contributor to national, regional and global dialogue on marine litter, Howitt relentlessly pushes for innovative solutions; twice addressing the United Nations at its headquarters in New York and most recently consulting and presenting at the United Nations Environment Assembly in Nairobi, Kenya in March 2019. Working alongside the Ministry for the Environment, Statistics New Zealand and the Department of Conservation, Howitt is helping to spearhead a ground-breaking new programme ‘Litter Intelligence’, combining grass roots community engagement with innovative technologies; training Citizen Scientists to collect long-term marine litter data, report on Sustainable Development Goals, and scale-up action. The trio begin right back where it all started for Camden, growing up with parents that were passionate about the environment and sustainability. It is very clear that is rubbed off on Camden. While most return from Mexico with a tan and a few tales that should never be repeated Camden was (believe it or not) inspired by the amount of rubbish he saw while he was there. What started as Camden being more self-aware and conscious of his consumption grew into a charity that Matty perfectly describes as ‘an organisation full of hope’. Sustainable Coastlines , acknowledge that even countries like New Zealand need to do more to reduce the refuse that ends up in our waterways so their mission is ‘to enable people to look after the coastlines and waterways they love.’ Camden talks us through the various ways that they do this and the things that you can do at home to make a difference - Because YOU really can make a difference. This is not to be missed! Settle in for a wonderful chat.

SOUND QUALITY DISCLAIMER: This interview was conducted over skype with a poor internet connection (thank you rural New Zealand). This does not take away from the fact that the content will have you hooked, we promise! Introducing to you a very extraordinary woman – Miriam Lancewood. Nine years ago Miriam and her husband Peter decided to give up all of their worldly belongings and move into the New Zealand wilderness with nothing but a tent and bow and arrow. Together they wanted to learn how to hunt & survive in nature and discover what happens to the mind and body when you take away all comforts and live wildly amongst nature on earth. They live simply in a tent or hut and survive by hunting wild animals, foraging edible plants and using minimal supplies. This quote sums Miriam up perfectly: ‘My life is free, random and spontaneous. This in itself creates enormous energy and clarity in body and mind.’ This is not an episode to miss. Art, Matilda & Miriam chat so beautifully about Miriam’s motivations to live in the wild; covering the effects on both the body and the mind. The conversation covers what life looks like when you live without a clock or technology but instead live by light hours, in silence and with ones thoughts. Miriam talks about the skills she has had to learn and the confidence she has found within because of this. Inspirational to say the least; Miriam’s story will have you wanting to pack your bags and head bush. After losing her right leg to cancer at the age of 9, Jess has refused to let that get in her way, living life to its fullest with a core passion for helping others overcome their physical and mental setbacks. Jess has developed a strong following by speaking of her journey in a raw and honest way. Having placed third on Dancing with the Stars NZ and signing with an LA based modelling agency, Jess has turned her adversity into a career of helping others push through life’s triumphs and continuing to lead by example by taking all challenges that come her way. Jess is currently on a mission to bring awareness to image retouching in the advertising/media industry and why we are chasing an unachievable and unrealistic idea of perfection both as a model and advocate. Her greatest asset - it truly is this inspirational lady’s mindset. To sign the petition (and please do!) follow this link . Joseph Parker, also known by his honorary Samoan matai title Lupesoliai La'auli, is a New Zealander whose dream as a young boy was to become a professional boxer. After years of hard work his dreams were realised and he became the first heavyweight boxer from either New Zealand or the Pacific Islands to win a major world championship. From there he has gone from strength to strength. He held the WBO heavyweight title from 2016 to 2018, and previously multiple regional heavyweight championships including the WBO Oriental, Africa, and Oceania titles; as well as the PABA, OPBF and New Zealand titles as well as representing New Zealand in the Commonwealth games. As important as all of his titles are, it is also key to highlight that despite his success, Parker is an incredibly humble and genuine guy who remains grounded by his core values. Parker chats to Art and Matilda about his family and all things boxing, how he prepares for a fight and the importance of not only being at your peak physically but also mentally. He talks us through the Team Parker initiative , a social enterprise aimed at increasing the access youth in the Pacific Islands have to sporting equipment. We also got the scoop on his fav pie and some insight into Arts brief albeit successful boxing career.
