Dr. Carmen Joy Imes visits Park Hill for a full Sunday. This recording is from our morning worship services. In this "Part One" teaching (Part Two happened later in the evening, all about women in the Bible and the Church), Carmen unpacks what it means that ALL humans ARE the image of God, and she draws the profound implications for how we should think about people with disabilities, creation care, and immigration. Carmen is associate professor of Old Testament at Talbot School of Theology at Biola University and is the author of several incredible books: Bearing God's Name: Why Sinai Still Matters , Being God's Image: Why Creation Still Matters , and the forthcoming Becoming God's Family: Why the Church Still Matters . In this teaching, we consider what Christians mean when we use the word “God.” There’s also a lot of vagueness and haze that comes when we use this word, even as Christians. We talk about “God” as though we’re talking about the same thing. But most of the time, we aren’t talking about the same thing at all—and that’s just IN the church. When people talk about God outside the church, things get even more vague. In the famous story of Moses and God meeting at a burning bush, we are presented with an important opportunity to think very intentionally about WHO Christians are talking about when we talk about God.

Feelings can be tricky—they’re personal, sometimes unreliable, and easy to misinterpret. But the Bible shows us that they’re also a vital part of faith. Scripture doesn’t dismiss our emotions; instead, it gives us a roadmap to help us navigate them, leading us to their true purpose—deep, childlike intimacy with God, the creator of facts and Lord of our feelings.

What if one of the greatest blessings in the Church is the presence of its own suffering people? Do you believe the Church needs sufferers? Brenna Blain visits Park Hill with a vulnerable message about how important it is for people to bring their authentic grief and loss into the center of the community in Jesus’ name.

As a lawyer fresh out of law school, Jonathan Derby thought he knew what justice was. Punishment for the evildoer. Right? Today, Jonathan knows the justice of Jesus encompasses so much more than that. It's less about seeking punishment for evil and more about restoring humans who have been deprived of the flourishing God intends. Jonathan Derby is the Director of the Center for Justice and Reconciliation at Point Loma Nazarene University (PLNU). He oversees an incredible initiative, which Park Hill financially partners with for 2025, called the Beauty for Ashes Scholarship Fund . This fund empowers survivors of sex-trafficking by enabling them to receive a college education at PLNU. Hear more about Jonathan and Beauty for Ashes in this final episode of our SEVEN conversations series.

Do you know what sex-trafficking is? Would you recognize it happening if you were staring right at it? Many of us think we would. But the sad truth is, our view of trafficking has been shaped more by the movies than by reality, which in turn enables human trafficking to hide in plain sight. It's time for the Church to open her eyes and move toward this issue with active compassion and willingness to learn. Wheeler Fisher has worked directly with survivors of sex-trafficking for years. After serving in Recovery & Transitions for survivors, she currently serves as Philanthropic Relations Manager at GenerateHope. GenerateHope exists to provide long and short term housing and wrap-around support to survivors who have experienced sex trafficking, right here in San Diego. 10,000 people are currently homeless in San Diego. 70% of those people became homeless while living here. Can the Church be a crucial part of the solution to such a rampant problem? We believe so. Ashley Guzik Murray is Associate Director of Church Partnerships at San Diego Rescue Mission. She's also an amazing leader in our Park Hill Church community. In this conversation, hear Ashley's personal story of Christ's transformative power. If you don't want your heart inspired to actively love the homeless in your own backyard, don't listen to this episode! Volunteer at the Rescue Mission

There are currently 1,400 kids in the San Diego foster system. What is life like for a child in the system? What happens to the kids who don't end up placed in a foster home? In this illuminating conversation, Missy Bell briefly describes "the state of the union" of foster care in our city, as well as practical ways the Church of Jesus can literally participate in saving young lives. Today we kickoff of SEVEN 2025—a multi-church week of worship, prayer and fasting. According to Isaiah 58, the fast God chooses is not a fast that simply benefits the ones fasting. Instead, true fasting leads us to embrace the poor and vulnerable in the name of Christ Jesus. But what does this look like practically? Today, Evan Wickham presents the "what" and "why" of fasting, and then we get to hear from amazing representatives from the following four Park Hill Church's justice partners. Our true fasting will lead to kingdom action alongside partners such as these: Missy Bell, Olive Crest. Ashley Guzik Murray, San Diego Rescue Mission. Alex Huerta, Hope Leadership Academy. Wheeler Fisher, GenerateHope .

Matthew Pursley teaches from Genesis 45:1-7, exploring how challenging and frustrating forgiveness can be. Saying "I forgive you" is often easier than truly meaning it from the heart. Yet, God promises that when we lay our pain at the feet of Jesus, we can experience true healing.

This is part three of our vision series. When Jesus calls disciples to follow him, he invites them to become fishers of people. This means all followers of Jesus are to be agents of renewal by drawing people into the kingdom work God is already doing in the world. And Jesus doesn’t leave us alone in this work. He promises the empowering presence of his Holy Spirit to us.
Mon, February 10, 2025
For Part 2 of our 2025 Vision series, we consider what it means (and requires) to become like Jesus. Could it be true that God offers us the power to change today? What would it look like to become a church that “strenuously contends” to see one another mature spiritually? Come and see.

As we look forward to the rest of 2025, we revisit our vision as a church. Our vision begins with Jesus, and Jesus invites us, first and foremost, to be with him. To abide in him. What does it look like for a whole church to abide in the goodness and authority of the person of Jesus? The answer can be summed up in one word: "believe.”

Erika Mellado, one of Parkhill’s Elders, teaches on 1 Corinthians 12:12-31, which discusses the meaning of living in unity amidst our differences. In the body of Christ, there is beauty in diversity, and the Holy Spirit uniquely gifts each member. The emphasis is on making ourselves available to serve and bless one another in love.

Recorded live (with audience Q&R) on Sunday night, Jan 26, 2025. Author and pastor Chris Nye provides a solid vision of what it looks like for Christians to be a confounding presence. He paints the picture through an journey across time and space, bringing in examples from the global church and the historic church. In this lecture, Nye offers inspiration for the American church to live in a way that witnesses to the cross of Christ amidst political, cultural, and sociological challenges. Our current political moment may be new to the American church, but it’s a common experience for the people of God across time and space. Let's learn together towards this end. Chris Nye serves as Lead Pastor at Imago Dei Community, a local church in the heart of Portland, Oregon, where he lives with his wife and two kids. He is the author of a few books, including, A Captive Mind: Christianity, Ideologies, and Staying Sane in a World Gone Mad , and writes regularly on his Substack, “Cut for Time” - cnye.substack.com
Mon, January 20, 2025
Chris Nye, pastor of Imago Dei Community in Portland, Oregon, visits Park Hill with a timely message. The cross of Christ will always be considered foolishness by societies. So rather than conspiring to ‘make Jesus relevant’ to culture, what if Christians passionately and unapologetically preached the confounding message of the cross with boldness? If the cross is supposed to feel scandalous to our surrounding culture, there’s no making it relevant. There is only preaching Christ and him crucified, and this itself becomes the very power of God.

In our moment of polarization and uncertainty, the world is longing for peace and belonging. We believe the Church exists to be the place on earth where heaven comes and fulfills these longings in every human heart. This dream becomes reality when God’s children open themselves to receive the Holy Spirit.

Each year during Advent, the global church thinks deeply about what it means to live in the hope, peace, joy, and love of God. So this year, Park Hill Church is hosting these conversations with key leaders within our community. For week four "Love", Evan Wickham sits down with David Wade, lead pastor of All Saints Church, to discuss what it looks like to receive God's love and then freely give it away. In a culture that paradoxically pursues both loneliness and autonomy, how can we follow Jesus' example in humbly embracing our dependence on God and one another for the sake of real love?
Sun, December 22, 2024
For our series "Advent." What is love, according to God? In this teaching, Evan Wickham leads us deep into the songbook of Jesus—the Psalms. It is here that we learn how to sing the song of the redeemed family of a God who is, at his very core, pure loyal love.

Each year during Advent, the global church thinks deeply about what it means to live in the hope, peace, joy, and love of God. So this year, Park Hill Church is hosting three conversations with key leaders from our broader community. For week three "Joy", Evan Wickham sits down with Dan and Alexis Braga, pastors of Neighbors Church, to discuss how to live in such a way that we receive the maximum amount of joy that God wants for our lives (and he wants a lot!).
Sun, December 15, 2024
From our series "Advent." On Advent Joy Sunday, we look to the Proverbs for wisdom on how to maximize our joy. In this ancient proverb, we find a lady who has been calling out to us from before the beginning of time. She knows the way to true happiness. She wants us to follow her. She is the personification of wisdom itself. And at Christmastime, we remind ourselves that the metaphor became a reality when the wisdom of God entered our world through Mary's womb. The question is, will we choose to trust the God who become flesh, even when it doesn't make sense? If so, we will arrive at joy that truly lasts.

Participate in the 2024 CHRISTMAS GIFT. From our series "Advent." There's a special word in the Bible for the peace that every soul longs for. It's the word "shalom." Shalom/peace is so much more than simply the absence of drama and conflict. When shalom comes, there is a thick presence and fulfillment of goodness, and healed relationships, and restored lives. Don't you long for that? In our day of division and disunity, shalom seems almost too good to be true. But according to Psalm 91, God's shalom is readily available to whoever chooses to dwell in the shelter of the Almighty. Apparently, no matter your circumstances, deep and abiding peace is moving toward everyone thorugh Jesus Christ. The question is, will we prepare him room?

Participate in the 2024 CHRISTMAS GIFT. Each year during Advent, the global church thinks deeply about what it means to live in the hope, peace, joy, and love of God. So this year, Park Hill Church is hosting these conversations with key leaders within our community. For week one "Hope", Evan Wickham sits down with Matt Pursley to discuss what it looks like to live in the true hope God promises to all his children. In our troubled, uncertain times, how can we live with real hope? Matt Pursley provides some powerful insights.
Mon, December 02, 2024
For our series "Advent." Pastor Matt Pursley shows us what hope is, why hope more than wishful thinking, and how authentic hope is always hereditary. As God's family chooses to trust in God's promises together in committed community, the result is a non-despairing, true-and-living hope that lasts for generations.

On Christ the King Sunday, Park Hill is honored to host guest speaker Dr. David Bennett. David is the author of the acclaimed book “A War of Loves: The Unexpected Story of a Gay Activist Discovering Jesus.” In this teaching, David shares his powerful story with our community.

As human beings, we find ourselves caught in the middle of a massive war. This war is not between political parties or ideological tribes, but between the very real dominion of satan and the unstoppable kingdom of the living God revealed in Jesus. As Jesus followers, we believe we belong to the side that will inevitably win the war, even as we continue to actively fight against satan’s power in our world. But how do we fight? What does spiritual warfare look like practically? Dr. Breshears unpacks it all in this incredible teaching.
Tue, November 12, 2024
From our series "Acts ." As the book of Acts concludes, we see the Apostle Paul under house arrest, yet described as 'unhindered' by the power of God. What if the circumstances that feel like weaknesses are actually where we encounter the presence and strength of God?
Tue, November 05, 2024
From our series “Acts.” As the book of Acts draws to a close, the Apostle Paul goes through a series of unfortunate events which turn out for the salvation and healing of many. What if our places of greatest wounding could become the sources of greatest healing for others, if only we would fully trust those wounds to Jesus?
Mon, October 28, 2024
From our series “Acts.” In the final chapters of this book, we learn incredibly important lessons about how to deal with our pain as followers of Jesus. Paul the Apostle is suffering greatly. He is unjustly incarcerated for years, beaten, abused, and publicly shamed. But Paul chooses joy in the middle of pain as he witnesses to the goodness of Jesus at every turn.
Tue, October 22, 2024
From our series “Acts.” We are taking a deep dive into chapters 23 through 25 to see how Paul responds when faced with death threats, plots, and an unfair trial. Paul is now in Caesarea and is trialed before Governor Felix. Despite the lack of evidence presented by his accusers and the complete failure of the justice system, we see Paul maintaining a faithful witness to Jesus. The encouragement for us today is to follow Paul’s example when faced with false accusations and remember that we can only do that if we are deeply rooted in God’s unfailing love.
Tue, October 15, 2024
From our series “Acts.” As the book of Acts nears its end, Paul finds himself in difficult times. Though repeatedly beaten and on trial for his life, Paul somehow remains courageous, humble, and clear thinking. In our modern moment of uncertainty, we crave Paul’s level of confidence. The good news is, this unshakable confidence is available to all who trust in the God who loves being fully present to his children, especially when they suffer.

What if something as simple as swiping our credit card can become a moment of deep intimacy with God? Guest speaker and pastor Steven Cooper presents a compelling case for how we can spend money in ways that make God happy. This teaching kicks off a four-week Community conversation around practicing generosity in the way of Jesus.
Mon, September 30, 2024
From our series "Acts." In chapter 20, Paul says goodbye to the church that he built for 3 years. Missy Bell shares insights from this passage on how we can learn what it means to be a disciple maker, one who counts the cost to live in the Way of Jesus.
Tue, September 24, 2024
From our series “Acts.” In chapter 19, the kingdom of God comes in direct conflict with the kingdom of darkness. This is a power encounter we should pay attention to. As we watch this story unfold, we see how God is the Master of repurposing evil for good. He then graciously invites his children to repent of our sin and renounce our agreements with darkness. As we do so, we get to walk in the power and light of heaven on earth together as family.
Mon, September 16, 2024
From our series “Acts.” At the beginning of chapter 19, Luke (the author of Acts) wants us to remember the identity of the main character of the story. It’s not Paul or Peter or any of the other Apostles. The main character is the Person of the Holy Spirit. And that same Person is with us today, ready to fill us with the same power that raised Jesus from the dead and animated the first Christians to turn the world upside down with the love of God. The only question we need to honestly answer is, are we ready and willing to be filled with the Holy Spirit?
Tue, September 10, 2024
From our series “Acts.” As followers of Jesus, we believe God is a speaking God. In Acts 18, we see God speaking powerfully to the Apostle Paul in his time of trouble. But does God still speak to us today in that same way? Why can it be so difficult to hear God speak? When we think we’re hearing God speak, what if we’re wrong? What about seasons of dry spirituality, when we’re longing to hear God’s voice, but only seem to hear silence? All of us can relate to these questions. Last Sunday, we considered these questions and more as we asked — what does it look like to be a community that hears (and obeys) the voice of God?
Mon, September 02, 2024
From our series “Acts.” In chapter 18, we discover a beautiful picture of married couples and singles partnering together for the kingdom in the most beautiful ways. Married couple Priscilla and Aquila not only work alongside the unmarried Paul and Apollos, but they welcome them into their home and become a base of support for their powerful ministries. In our current epidemic of loneliness and isolation, Acts 18 lights the way for the church to become the community of longing and intimacy the world is desperately longing for.

Author and broadcaster Justin Brierley visits Park Hill for the last stop of his ‘Surprising Rebirth of Belief in God’ West Coast tour. Justin has hosted interviews and dialogues with many of the world’s leading intellectuals, both skeptical and believing alike. In this talk, Justin outlines how the conversations around skepticism, belief, and faith have developed over the past two decades. After the talk, Evan Wickham interviews Justin with a mix of audience questions.
Mon, August 26, 2024
From our series “Acts.” Justin Brierley visits Park Hill Church with a timely message. He believes we could be on the cusp of another Jesus Revolution in our time. How should we prepare? According to Justin, we would be wise to follow the example of Paul in Acts 17. By the way we live and in the words we say, we should make the watching world wish that Christianity were true.
Tue, August 20, 2024
Pastor and professor Guy Gray visits Park Hill with a timely message about the intersection of doubt, faith, and evidence in our relationship with God.
Tue, August 13, 2024
As we take a break from our series in Acts, Missy Bell looks back to Acts 5:12-16. In addition to being a Park Hill member, Missy is the Programs Director of Olive Crest, an organization that believes in transforming the lives of at-risk youth through the healing power of God, family, and community. As Missy walks us through the passage, she reminds us that serving vulnerable people was meant to be done in community with other believers, for the glory of God.
Wed, August 07, 2024
As we take a break from our series in Acts, David Wade, lead pastor of All Saints Church, walks us through 1 John 4:13-18. How we relate to God so often depends on what we believe he is really like, or how we think he really feels about us. Are we expectant of love? Or anticipating punishment? Thankfully, in the midst of our fear, uncertainty, and even our failures, we meet a Savior who gets low, lifts us up and says do not be afraid. Why? Because God is love, and perfect love drives out all fear.
Tue, July 30, 2024
As we take a break from our series in Acts, Luis Mellado shares insights from James 5:17-18. In addition to being an elder at Park Hill Church, Luis is the Regional Director of the Global Leadership Summit for all Spanish-speaking countries, where he oversees hundreds of pastor and leader conferences across Latin America. As Luis walks us through the passage, he discusses how we are all capable of experiencing great highs and lows. We examine how God worked in Elijah’s life to help him navigate through the lows.
Mon, July 22, 2024
From our series "Acts." Paul finds himself in Athens, surrounded by idols. The idols make him angry—but not for reasons we might think. Paul knows that idol worship leads to the dehumanization of the idol worshiper. And he's deeply grieved at how much this dehumanization is happening in this city. But instead of condemnation, Paul gets curious. Instead of irrational anger, Paul engages people with invitational curiosity. And his hearers experience the love of God.
Sun, July 14, 2024
From our series "Acts." What are we praying for when we ask God to "open doors" for us? Do we really know? What does an open door from God look like? And should we walk through every open door, even if it really is opened by God? Not according to Paul in Acts 16. This fascinating story lights the way. Apparently, it's about something far better than any open door we could ever ask for—and it's available to everyone who trusts in Jesus. It's all about loving the person right in front of you.
Mon, July 08, 2024
From our series "Acts." Who belongs in God's family? This is the question that prompted the very first church conference which we read about in Acts 15. Certain Jewish Christians were telling Gentile Christians they had to essentially become Jewish to be saved and belong at the table of Jesus. But Paul, Barnabas, Peter and James disagree. This family is for everyone, regardless of background, who repents of their sin and calls upon Jesus as King. This is a message of radical inclusion, open to all who confess Jesus as Lord exclusively. This message has huge implications for us today as a church in a time of extreme polarization and division.
Mon, July 01, 2024
From our series "Acts." Matthieu Rouffet unpacks the turbulent story of Acts 14. Paul and Barnabas experience both extreme highs and extreme lows on their journey. But somehow, they manage to remain in a state of joy. How is this possible? Could the same Holy Spirit that empowered their joy be available to us?
Sun, June 23, 2024
From our series "Acts." Aleah Pursley walks us through Acts 13 and the Apostle Paul's first recorded sermon, which is a stunning vision of the Risen Jesus.
Mon, June 17, 2024
From our series "Acts." As the first half of Acts comes to an end, Luke (author of Acts) highlights the dramatic conflict between the kingdoms of the earth and the kingdom of God. While human governments and politicians vie for temporary power, the true King of kings and President of presidents is and will always be a slain Lamb on a throne at the center of the universe who reigns over every human nation of the world. What does this mean for how Christians should engage in human politics? Acts 12 lights the way.

From our series "Acts." Cataclysmic newsflash: The Gentiles are in! In Acts 10–11, for the first time ever, Gentiles are coming to faith God through Jesus, repenting of sin, and receiving the presence of the Holy Spirit in their lives. But the Jewish Christians have a concern: how could Peter the Jew be eating with uncircumcised Gentiles?! This was a problem. Thankfully, Gentile inclusion was always in God's plan, and the Holy Spirit is really good at guiding God's people into all truth.

From our series "Acts." In chapter 9, we come to one of the most famous stories in the Bible. It's the story of Paul's encounter with the risen Jesus which changed him forever. This wasn't just the turning point in Paul's own life, but one of the main turning points of human history. By reflecting on Paul's story of encountering Jesus, we can learn a ton about how to tell our own Jesus stories. It's not about having a flashy, golden, hollywood, biblical-level Jesus story like Paul’s. It's about bearing witness to the normal, everyday-miraculous ways Jesus encounters us all. All we can say is "This is what saw. This is what I've heard." What if you started sharing your Jesus story in all your relationships?

From our series "Acts." Josh White, founding pastor of Door of Hope Church in Portland, OR, visits Park Hill Church to preach a message on Acts 8v26–40. In this text, a Jewish Jesus follower named Philip follows the leading of the Holy Spirit to share the gospel with an influential Ethiopian eunuch. Josh White interweaves his own story with the story of Philip, and the result is a powerful call to boldly witness to Jesus in our time.

As we walk through the book of Acts this year, we are also looking at eight practices from Jesus and the early Christians that shaped the life of the Church through time. In this teaching, Evan Wickham walks us through our fourth practice: Sabbath. It's also Pentecost Sunday—the day the Western church celebrates the outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon Jesus' first disciples in Acts 2. What does Pentecost have to with Sabbath? For the Spirit-filled body of Christ today, to practice Sabbath is to engage in a weekly rehearsal of Pentecost. Just as the disciples waited on the Holy Spirit in Jerusalem before doing Jesus's work in the world, so too, we wait for God on the Sabbath Day, and from that place of waiting, we then partner with God in our work for the rest of the week.

From our series "Acts." Christianity goes international. As it does, the Holy Spirit proves himself to be the Great Unifier of God's family in Jesus. As mortal enemies turn to Jesus together, they become family around the same table. This is the shocking stuff of the kingdom that turns the world upside down. Isn't this the reconciled, forgiven family we all long to become? Come and see.

From our series "Acts." The church goes international in Acts 8. But not the way anyone expected or wanted. Severe, painful persecution comes upon the first church in Jerusalem, causing everyone but the Apostles to escape into Judea and Samaria. From the human perspective, this is terrible and real suffering. From the divine perspective, God is repurposing terrible evil for near-unimaginable good. This is what God promises to do for all who trust in Jesus: he masterfully redeems our brokenness for our good.

As part of our year in Acts, we are looking at eight different practices from Jesus that shaped the life of the early church. In this teaching, Dan Braga walks us through the third practice: silence and solitude. Jesus was shaped by his rhythmic practice of being still and embracing isolation in order to commune with the Father through the Spirit. So as Jesus followers, we are invited to do the same. But what should our practice of silence and solitude look like in our noise-saturated age?

Rachel Hughes visits Park Hill Church with a timely message for many. Rachel and her husband Tim are pastors of Gas Street Church in Birmingham, UK. Today, Rachel unpacks the story of Hannah in 1 Samuel 1 and 2. The story of Hannah is a beautiful example of what we as God's children are invited to do with our unfulfilled longings. Rather than engaging in spiritual bypassing or caving in to discouragement, Hannah chooses to "stand up" and walk through her unfulfilled desires, fully trusting God with the outcomes.

From our series "Acts." Acts 6-7 are two chapters almost entirely focused on the life of one person: Stephen. He's not a full time pastor. He's not one of the Apostles. He's not one of the professional church people. He's a normal church member who becomes one of the most extraordinary lives in the history of the Church. He's also the first Christian martyr. What is the secret of Stephen's power and influence? Whatever it is, it's something available to everyone in the church, not just the professional Christians.

From our series "Acts." As the church continues to grow, problems start to arise. In Acts 6, the Greek-speaking Jewish Christian widows are getting overlooked by what is likely the majority culture (Aramaic-speaking Jewish Christians) within the church. But the Holy Spirit begins moving in this new church, and the result is beautiful. Because the whole church has the power of the Spirit, they are free to give away their own power for the sake of the vulnerable just like Jesus did. This story has so much relevance for our time.

It's Easter 2024. We are continuing in our series "Acts." Here in Acts 5, the connection to the Easter story is too good to miss. The apostles are in prison for preaching the resurrection. They've been publicly shamed by Jewish leaders. These apostles have every reason to be crippled by fear of the unknown. But they aren't afraid. It's as if they're expecting a heavenly being to pass through their locked doors and lead them into God's future hope. Why were they so secure, confident, and settled amidst their suffering? The reason goes back to a similar event they experienced on the first Easter morning.

Matt Pursley gives a teaching at our special Palm Sunday gathering for all ages.
Mon, March 18, 2024
From our series "Acts." For many Bible readers, Acts chapter 5 is famously considered one of the most troubling texts in all of scripture. In this narrative, a couple named Ananias and Sapphira die... seemingly, for lying. But things are more than they seem. And the result of this tragic moment in church history is that the "fear of God" grips the hearts of the whole church, which in turn leads to miraculous healings, salvation, and power flowing through the early church out into the world God so loves. So, what do we make of this story today as San Diegans in 2024? And what do we make of "the fear of the LORD"? The Holy Spirit wan't to bring about great fruit in our lives today. But it turns out, we can't have the fruit without the fear.

From our series "Acts." In the unfolding events of Acts 3–4, we witness the first significant conflict between the kingdom of God and the kingdoms of this world. Peter and John are interrogated by the authorities for preaching the resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth. How they respond to their earthly authorities (and how their Church community responds to their response) reveals much about how followers of Jesus are to live in the world today. As citizens of God's kingdom first, what should our "allegiance" be to our worldly government and culture? And what should we do, practically, when those two kingdoms come into conflict? The Spirit-led Church in Acts 4 points the way forward.

As part of our year in Acts, we are looking at eight different practices from Jesus that shaped the life of the early church. In this teaching, Evan Wickham walks us through our second practice: fasting. The spiritual practice of fasting from food played a crucial role in the launching of Jesus' ministry as well as the most important moments of key decision-making in the early church. So, this raises the question, why is fasting such a forgotten practice for Christians in our time and place today? In our relatively affluent culture of extra, more, and mine, fasting might be the most relevant practice for followers of Jesus. We are called by the living God to live holy lives by the power of the Holy Spirit. And one of the primary ways we get to live into that holiness is through the practice of fasting-with-prayer in community.

From our series "Acts." As the disciples proclaim Jesus’ name with power and authority, the religious leaders recognize that although the disciples were uneducated, ordinary men, they had obviously been with Jesus. They were beginning to talk like him, act like him, and do the miraculous things he did. As Jesus' disciples today, we are called to impact our world the same was his first disciples did. We do this by being with Jesus. In other words: we must be filled with the Spirit.

From our series "Acts." Here in chapter 3, we read the account of the first miraculous healing in the early church. Peter and John see a man unable to walk from birth, and they proceed to heal the man by God's power in Jesus' name. This story raises so many questions for us—namely, does God still heal like this today? Did Jesus really command his followers to continue doing all his healing work that he did? The answer is just as shocking for us today as it was for the first witnesses of the miraculous healing of Acts 3.
Mon, February 12, 2024
As part of our year in Acts, we are looking at eight different practices from Jesus that shaped the life of the early church. In this teaching, David Wade walks us through the first practice: reading scripture. The Bible tells the story of God’s acts through history to save and rescue a people for himself. Not only is the Bible this kind of story, but it's also a living word, alive and powerful, that actually shapes God's rescued family more and more into the image of his son Jesus by the power of the Holy Spirit. So, how do we practice reading scripture in order to experience transformation? Listen along and find out.

This is a live recording of our final House of Learning event from 2023 (Nov 26). When Park Hill leadership asked our people what areas of the Christian faith they would most like to learn about, several responded: “Church history.” So, this final House of Learning is entitled "Christian History Before Power.” The goal of the night was to share a meal and humbly learn from the first 300 years of church history all about what it means to love and follow Jesus. How did the first Jesus followers answer Jesus' question, "Who do you say that I am?" Join us and find out.
Sun, February 04, 2024
From our series "Acts." Acts chapter 2 shows us what happened the day the Church was born, and the apostle Peter gives the first sermon in Church history. His message: The long-awaiting Day of the Lord has come! Now the power of heaven is unleashed on earth, creating new ways of being human, leading to the complete restructuring of human society around King Jesus. So rethink everything! This is what the first century Jews were waiting for. And it's what every human heart today is longing for as well (whether we know it or not). We long for the world to be set right, where there's no more sin and death, and injustice is no more. This is what Jesus came to do. The question is, will we respond by repenting and trusting in him as the rightful king of the universe? This might require us to rethink everything...
Sun, January 28, 2024
From our series "Acts." Acts chapter two is one of the most well known parts of the Bible, and for good reason. It's the moment the entire Old Testament was longing for: When God's personal presence comes to rest within the hearts of everyone, from every nation and culture, who pledges allegiance to Jesus as king. But when the Holy Spirit comes, what's the first thing he compels the first Christians to do? The answer is just as shocking to us today as it was to those who witnessed the first events of Pentecost.

Introducing our series "Acts." Park Hill Church will be in the book of Acts for most of 2024. The core concept of the book: The people of God—the Church—are people empowered by God’s Spirit on God’s mission to expand God’s kingdom in the world now. The Holy Spirit gives God’s people the ability to accomplish God’s mission. Join us as we watch (and follow) the first church following Jesus into the world.

In this teaching, we wrap up Justice Week at Park Hill Church. It’s also the eve of MLK Day, a day our culture has set aside to commemorate the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., a Baptist minister and prominent leader who helped bring hope and healing to America in the name of Jesus. In that spirit of biblical justice in the way of Jesus, we are honored to have David M. Bailey preaching this Sunday at Park Hill Church. David Bailey is a public theologian, culture maker, and catalyst focused on building reconciling communities. David is the founder and Chief Vision Officer of Arrabon , a spiritual formation ministry that equips the American Church to actively and creatively pursue racial healing in their communities. He is the co-author of the study series, A People, A Place, and A Just Society , and the executive producer of the documentary 11 am: Hope for America's Most Segregated Hour and the Urban Doxology Project . David is rooted at East End Covenant Fellowship, serving on the preaching team, and his greatest honor is to be married to his wonderful wife, Joy.

As we take in the grand story of scripture, two things become clear: (1) Jesus is the Voice of God that pierces the darkness of our sin and offers the forgiveness, belonging and healing that every human heart longs for. And all who rejoice in Jesus' authority and goodness get to be part of the New Creation that he is bringing forever. And (2) the flipside is just as clear: All who resist the authority of Jesus in their lives will experience destruction in the darkness of their own choosing forever. If we have ears to hear, we will discover God's Voice speaks a better word than we can possibly imagine. It all comes down this question: How will you respond to his Voice today?

From our series "Advent 2023." This is the third Sunday of Advent, traditionally calld "Rejoice Sunday!" But if we're honest, we have mixed feelings about joy at Christmastime. During the holidays, our culture is shouting at us to be happy and feel the Christmas spirit, which only highlights the very real grief and difficulties that we all experience. This is why the topic of joy can be tough, especially at Christmas time. We feel the tension of rejoicing and lamenting, which is why Mary is the perfect person to pay attention to on "Rejoice Sunday." The mother of God experienced that same tension in her own story. She leads the rest of us to that same Joy in her Son Jesus.

From our series "Advent 2023." AJ Swoboda visits Park Hill Church for the second Sunday of Advent. In this teaching, AJ leads us in reflecting on the life of Joseph the husband of Mary, mother of Christ. Joseph is a fascinating and often ignored figure in both our nativity scenes as well as our study of scirpture. But today, Joseph takes center stage, and as he does, he actually leads all of us to de-center ourselves to that Jesus gets all the attention. Let's pay attention to Joseph the lowly, and follow him out of our self-centeredness and into the presence of God.

“Are You Anxious? Come to Me.” – Jesus What is anxiety? Why do I feel anxious? How do I deal with it? This is a live recording of our House of Learning from Sunday night, October 29th, all about 'Mental Health and Faith', led by Pastor and Marriage and Family Therapist Greg Piken. In this episode, you will get a basic understanding of why you feel anxious and learn a variety of practices that will help you to find more peace in your body, in your relationships, and in your connection to God through Christ and the Holy Spirit. What if God actually designed the Way of Jesus to be inherently healing for our mental health? This event will explore an understanding of mental health, anxiety, and wellness through a Christian faith perspective, and give you and your loved ones practical tools and next steps to take. We pary it enriches your life as you follow Jesus.

From our series "Advent 2023." Terry Fouche visits Park Hill Church. He imparts a vision for listening to a God who is good and desires to speak to his children. Advent is a time for waiting. It's difficult to wait, especially when we experience pain and suffering. But God is good and desires to speak to his family, always.

This is the final episode of our 7-part “Godbreathed” interview series. Author and pastor John Mark Comer visits the Park Hill podcast to discuss his journey with Jesus, his relationship with God and scripture, and what it means to be spiritually formed in the way of Jesus. Evan Wickham interviews John Mark on how to engage with our polarized culture without losing our souls, how to faithfully read the hard parts of the Bible, and the pros and cons of the modern spiritual formation movement in the church today. We pray this conversation enriches you as you seek to love God and others well.

Erika Mellado, on of the elders of Park Hill Church, preaches on Christ the King Sunday. When Jesus calls his disciples and begins to teach them, he teaches them all about what it means to live under his kingdom. This is where many of us start to struggle today. Many of us are OK with the idea of Jesus being the Creator and our teacher, but we're less comfortable with him being our King and authority over our lives. But the authority and goodness of King Jesus is the best thing we could possibly imagine for the universe. We are praying through the whole New Testament in 2023, together as a community. This is Part 6 of our "Godbreathed" Interview series, with Dr. Lynn Cohick. Does the Bible teach that women and men are to lead God's church as co-equal image bearers of Christ and spiritual fathers and mothers within Christ's Body? Dr. Lynn Cohick answers with a huge yes. Dr. Cohick is part of the NLT Bible Translation Committee, with special focus on the Gospel and Acts. She has written The Letter to the Ephesians (New International Commentary on the New Testament) and co-authored Christian Women in the Patristic World . Cohick also cohosts The Alabaster Jar podcast, a weekly conversation that takes on current issues impacting women at the intersection of faith, theology, and ministry.

How we tell time determines who we are. This is why Christians, those who know they are the loved daughters and sons of the living God, have been telling time by way of the Christian calendar for centuries. Calendar creates culture. Humbly living in and out of the Christian calendar is a powerful way to “number our days” as a Spirit-led community in San Diego—and remind ourselves who we are. We believe the story of Jesus is the one true story that redeems the world. We believe this so profoundly that it’s how we tell time. Dr. Sandy Richter (PhD Harvard) is the real life Indiana Jones. She's an Ancient Near Eastern linguist and archaeologist. She can read original Old Testament Hebrew better than most of us read English, which is probably why she’s one of the few women on the NIV Bible Translation Committee. In Part 5 of our Godbreathed interview series, Evan Wickham asks Dr. Richter how she stumbled from lost to believer to leading voice in biblical scholarship. Also, does the Bible demean women and promote slavery (fun fact: she disagrees with Nijay Gupta’s answer to this Q from a few episodes ago in this series)? What parts of the Bible still keep Sandy up at night? And most importantly, how does Jesus encounter Sandy through the scriptures?

Does the Bible demean women? Why do Christians seem to obey only some biblical commands "as written" (i.e. Love God, love neighbor) while obeying other commands only partially (i.e. don't eat shellfish, don't shave your beards, how to marry your captured slaves)? In this conversation, Evan Wickham interviews Dan Kimball, pastor of Vintage Faith , professor at Western Seminary , and author of How (Not) to Read the Bible , among other works. In this conversation, Dan Kimball responds beautifully to some common questions about the Bible and following Jesus. We pray this conversation increases your trust in the goodness of God's written word.

This is the final teaching of our series "Godbreathed." The whole point of the Beatitudes—and the whole point of the scriptures—is to empower the whole family of God to see what’s really going on behind this thing called life and reality: Things are more than they seem! The kingdom of God really is breaking into our world of pain, division and grief. Jesus really is the good king who is back from the dead and won't stop until every sad thing comes untrue. This is good news for the poor, powerless, grieving, and those society deems unimportant. We are praying through the whole New Testament in 2023, together as a community. To enrich our Sunday teaching series Godbreathed, the Park Hill Church Podcast is hosting conversations with scholars, theologians, and pastors all about the good, bad, ugly and beautiful parts of the Bible, and how to encounter Jesus through it all. This conversation is with Dr. AJ Swoboda. AJ is a pastor, theologian, and cohost of the Slow Theology Podcast alongside Nijay Gupta. AJ currently teaches Bible and Theology at Bushnell University. In this conversation, Evan Wickham asks AJ some questions about the Bible. As Always, Swoboda’s responses never fail to surprise and delight (which might involve a tirade against what he calls "Bible shaming" plus a provocative take on “kosmos” in John 3:16 being about God’s love for extra terrestrials as well as humans). We think this conversation will help you on your journey following Jesus.

From our series "Godbreathed." The Bible is not just a book that we read; it's also designed to read us. How do we come to the Bible in this way? We don’t read the Bible simply for information, or even for motivation to be better people (although those are good things!). Ultimately, the goal of Bible reading is union and loving communion with the Trinity. The practice of slow, daily, meditative scripture reading, both individually and in community dialogue, has always been central to how followers of Jesus are transformed into Jesus’ image. But don’t let his credentials fool you: Nijay is a pastor at heart. In this conversation, Evan Wickham asks Nijay Gupta some common questions about the Bible: Is the Bible anti-women? Is the Bible pro-slavery? What parts of the Bible still keep Nijay up at night, and what does he do about that? Perhaps most importantly, how does Nijay encounter Jesus through the scriptures? We discuss these questions and more in this fascinating interview. We pray it equips you to follow Jesus more closely into the wild world of the Bible.

As a professional Bible guy, how does Preston experience the loving presence of God through the scriptures? We discuss these questions and more in this interview.
