Mikel explores the intersection of brand strategy, sponsorships, and social impact. From managing media coverage for Citi’s partnerships in sports, entertainment, and culture to leading PR campaigns that drive meaningful change, Mikel shares insights from his career shaping one of the world’s most recognizable financial brands. His work with Citi has taken him to major global events like the Paralympic Games in Tokyo and Beijing, The President’s Cup in Charlotte, The Ryder Cup in Rome, and the Miami Grand Prix. Mikel has also led social media campaigns to show Citi’s efforts to help to close the racial wealth gap and has met with HBCU students to provide early career advice. He has also been featured on Citi’s TikTok account, providing consumer fraud prevention tips with over 6 million views. At Penn State, Mikel was the director of communications for Lion Ambassadors, where he also met his fiancé, Tara Bendler (’15.) He was also a diversity ambassador for the Donald P. Bellisario College of Communications, a communications captain for the Penn State Dance Marathon, and a head lifeguard at the McCoy Natatorium. He graduated in 2015 with a degree in journalism. Mikel is a 2024 recipient of the Penn State Alumni Achievement Award and lives in Brooklyn, New York.

Tim Buckley '09 is a television meteorologist covering all types of weather in North Carolina. Tim has covered snow, tornadoes, floods, and multiple hurricanes across the state, from Matthew to Florence to Sandy and Helene. He’s received awards and recognition for his coverage, which includes being nominated for 10 regional EMMY awards. Tim is a 2009 graduate of the Penn State Department of Meteorology and Atmospheric Science. While in school, he was a member of the Penn State Blue Band. Robert Hughes '95 has 30 years of experience in abandoned mine land reclamation, water pollution control technologies, environmental education, and capacity building in coalfield communities throughout Pennsylvania. As the Executive Director of the Eastern PA Coalition for Abandoned Mine Reclamation (EPCAMR), Robert is a coalition builder, grant writer and grant administrator, and coordinator of 26 Commonwealth-wide conferences on abandoned mine reclamation. The mission of EPCAMR is to encourage the reclamation and redevelopment of land affected by past mining practices. This includes reducing hazards to health and safety, eliminating soil erosion, improving water quality, and returning land affected by past mining practices to productive use. We have a Penn State football legend on today's episode of The People of Penn State, just in time for the Nittany Lions' College Football Playoff matchup with SMU this weekend! Tom "Scrap" Bradley '78 played for Penn State as a standout defensive back from 1975-1978 before transitioning to coaching. Over the next thirty seven years, Tom dedicated himself to the program as a coach, including serving as defensive coordinator and interim head coach. Known for his recruiting prowess and his defensive expertise, Tom's impact extended beyond Penn State with successful coaching stints at West Virginia, UCLA, and in the NFL with the Pittsburgh Steelers. She has also previously been recognized as the 2014 Armed Forces Insurance Tinker AFB Military Spouse of the Year. Having grown up, served, and married into the military, Lori has dedicated her life to bettering the lives of those around her. A Human Resources Consultant and Personal and Professional Life Coach, she serves on the Board of Advisors for several local and national organizations, and is a certified Master Resiliency Trainer for the Air Force. Lori is a founding member of Lion Ambassadors and during her time as a student was also very involved in student government, Air Force ROTC, and other organizations.

Gary Brandeis '88 is the Founder and CEO of Scholar Hotels LLC. Gary started his real estate career in 1990 and has been the principal partner in four real estate investment funds, investing over $350 million in all property types and investment strategies since 2010. He acquired his first hotel in 2006 and since then, Scholar has developed, redeveloped, and currently operates six hotels in State College including the Nittany Lion Inn and The Penn Stater. As a Penn State alumnus, these projects have special meaning, and their success is also Penn State’s success. Gary joined us on The People of Penn State to discuss how he got started in the hotel real estate industry, the Scholar's portfolio of hotels in State College, the extensive renovations to the Nittany Lion Inn, and his work giving back to Penn State as a volunteer.

Every day's commute to work is a "pinch me moment" for alumna Antonella Crescimbeni '17. Her office is the "World's Most Famous Arena," Madison Square Garden, home of the NBA's New York Knicks and NHL's New York Rangers, the latter of which Antonella works for as a Video Shooter/Editor. With the Rangers, she is responsible for all aspects of the creative process including videography, photography, editing, and producing social videos, long-form features, event presentation, and marketing platforms. Since his time growing up in the Finger Lakes in New York, alumnus Brian Kappel (1998 - Visual Arts) has long had a passion for Penn State. This second generation Nittany Lion took a very different path which provided a one of a kind experience in Happy Valley and paved the way for a successful career in art and design. The now Portland-based designer and visual artist has completed work for the College Football Playoff, Nike, Jordan Brand, and a mural for the Paterno Library Starbucks. He also now owns his own design company, "Space Monkey Designs." In our conversation with Brian we talked about his strong family ties to Penn State, many involvements as a student, a love sports, working with Nike and the Jordan Brand, creative inspiration, and his artistic creation for the Paterno Library Starbucks . Both a United States Field Hockey Hall of Fame and a National Field Hockey Coaches Association Hall of Fame inductee, as well as an inductee of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame, Char Morett-Curtiss is a Penn State coaching legend. Having led Penn State Field Hockey for 36 seasons, she compiled 541 victories, eight Big Ten regular-season titles, seven Big Ten Coach of the Year honors, 30 NCAA Tournament appearances and six Final Four appearances. Char retired as the program's head coach this past spring, but her commitment to Penn State was far from over. She is now serving as an advisor for Penn State Athletics and the Chair of Teammates For Life. Teammates For Life is a women’s athletics initiative created to celebrate, elevate and engage past, present and future women student-athletes at Penn State. Fans of Broadway and the hit Disney film series "Frozen" won't want to miss this episode of The People of Penn State, as we're joined by Broadway and Theatre Actress, Caroline Bowman '10! Caroline is currently starring in Disney’s "Frozen" North American Tour as the role of Elsa. Her Broadway credits include Elphaba in "Wicked" and Nicola in "Kinky Boots" (Opening and Closing cast). During our conversation with Caroline, she discussed being a part of the renowned musical theatre program at Penn State, why she wanted to pursue a career in acting, getting her start on Broadway, what it's like playing a character as popular as Elsa, working alongside her husband Austin Colby on stage, and more. She has been seen on tour and around the world in "Evita" (Eva Perón, Helen Hayes Award Nominee), "Spamalot" (Lady of the Lake), "Grease" (Rizzo), and "Fame - The China Tour" (Carmen). For over 25 years, Dr. Mumin has served in various capacities as a teacher, dean of students, principal and central administrator. Most recently, Dr. Mumin served as the Superintendent of Schools at Lower Merion School District. Prior to Lower Merion, he was the Superintendent of Reading School District for seven years. Beginning as a Secondary English teacher in Scotland, Pennsylvania, in 1997, Dr. Mumin rose through the leadership ranks of the education system in Pennsylvania. Dr. Mumin is committed to promoting and sustaining student achievement, equity and access to educational programming for all students, as well as creating plans that are fiscally responsible. Dr. Mumin is also the author of the book "Problem Child: Leading Students Living in Poverty Towards Infinite Possibilities of Success." On today's episode of The People of Penn State podcast we speak with former Penn State Football placekicker, Nick Gancitano (1986 – Biomechanics), who was a part of the Nittany Lions' 1982 National Championship team. After his NFL career was interrupted by injury, he went into the business world at A.L. Williams, where he led high-performance sales teams as a regional vice president and public speaker. Nick went on to teach physics, anatomy-physiology honors and biology while privately developing 55 collegiate place-kickers, including 13 All-Americans and three professionals. He later left the public schools to focus on a concentrated spiritual pursuit through meditation and the inner journey of self-realization. Professionally, he is now a private coach, meditation instructor and bioresonance therapist. Nick has written two books, "The Awakened Athlete" and "Be Still and Know I AM God," a number one Best Seller and International Book Award Finalist. Anand Ganjam (2015 – Finance) is the 83rd President of the Penn State Alumni Association and began his 2-year term as President on July 1, 2023. At the age of 30, he is the youngest President in the Association’s history. Professionally, Anand is a Strategy & Consulting Senior Manager with Accenture, where he focuses on helping large organizations navigate change and develop talent. Dr. Stanford discussed her time at Penn State, (including her days as a Lion Ambassador), her career path, transforming her private practice into a Covid-19 testing center during the height of the pandemic, what it's like to become a public figure, working with Will Smith, and disparities in healthcare. More background on Dr. Stanford: She gained national recognition during the COVID-19 pandemic using the infrastructure of her pediatric surgery practice to create a grassroots organization to focus on testing, contact tracing and vaccination in communities devoid of access to care and resources. Dr. Stanford has been a practicing physician for over 25 years. She is former director of the Center for Minority Health and Health Disparities of Temple University School of Medicine, a member of the Philadelphia Board of Health, Philadelphia Department of Health COVID19 advisory board and a trusted national leader and public health advocate. In addition to opening a Center for Health Equity to improve health outcomes in communities with the lowest life expectancy, her organization was responsible for providing over 100,000 COVID-19 tests and vaccinations. Captain Thomas Ulmer '96 is a commissioned Naval Officer with 27 years of experience. A Surface Warfare Officer, he has commanded two Navy warships and led diverse work forces through routine operations to crisis while circum-navigating the globe and conducting operations worldwide. The Women with Children Program (WWC) is one of only eight such programs in the United States. Its goal is to empower economically disadvantaged single mothers by providing the opportunity to complete a college degree, creating brighter futures for themselves and for their children. The J2 Spotlight Musical Theater Company was the brainchild of Penn State alumni James P. Jimirro and Robert W. Schneider. The company presents professional revivals of worthy Broadway musicals; in doing so it provides an opportunity for patrons to re-visit these shows and, in some cases, experience them for the first time. The Company chooses shows that it deems deserving of continued exposure. The company, as part of its casting, will introduce audiences to emerging artists within the New York theatrical community. Since graduating from the Penn State College of Arts and Architecture in 2013, Ryan has served in the United States Navy as a Lieutenant, co-founded his own Trinidadian Hot Pepper Sauce company, joined the Military Leadership Development Program at Johnson and Johnson, became a member of Alumni Council, earned his master's degree from the Smeal College of Business, and more. The inaugural episode of The People of Penn State is here! In our very first episode, host Paul Clifford '20g is joined by Penn State alumnus and Paralympian Jake Schrom '11 . Schrom graduated from Penn State with a bachelor’s degree in landscape contracting and now works professionally in landscape design and sales for his family’s company. Jake is the President of the Penn State Mont Alto Alumni Society and an Alumni Council member. He is also a Paralympian, having competed for Team USA in Powerlifting at the Tokyo Games earlier this summer. He became an amputee in 2008, as a result of a work-related vehicle accident while he was a student at Penn State. In this episode, Jake discusses how he became a Penn Stater, his path to getting involved with Ability Athletics, competing at Tokyo 2020, his experiences as an alumni volunteer leader, and much more.
