This week I want to return to thoughts of the Poetry Pea Anthology , Little Marvels for 2025, which if you’ve been listening to the podcasts this year you’ll know is on the theme of belonging and alienation . Don’t worry, you have time to think about your submissions, your invitation will be arriving at some point later in the year… of course later could be next month or five months away. What you need to do if you would like to submit is make sure you are on the mailing list. You can sign up on the Poetry Pea website. Only poets on the mailing list will be invited to submit. I do check. So anyway a few weeks ago, in episode 5 of this series I discussed the idea of belonging and the various ways we can interpret that in haiku and senryū. shownotes This is the very last Poetry Peacast of season 7, a special one, full of your original tanka poetry. Thank you to all of you loyal listeners and all my new poet friends who have joined us this year. It’s a treat for me to spend time with you and to read your work during the submission periods. I enjoy the comments that our lovely editing team make when we read your work and I learn so much from the interaction with them, so thank you to all the members of the various teams, Liam, Robert, Vandana, Lev, Matt, Linda, Shane and Richard and to two of the team who left this year Ron and Lorraine. Much love to you all. I do need some team members who would be interested in helping to get the Poetry Pea facebook group up, running and continuing. Volunteer if you can and tell me what would you like and expect from us on Facebook? I’m pretty clueless as I haven’t really used it, but I’ll learn… To everyone who keeps me on my toes with emails, I thank you for them, I can be slow in getting back to you, but I do read all my emails and do my best. Thanks not just to poets who submitted to the tanka submissions but also to the judges who stepped up to help me, Matt Defibaugh, Robert Horrobin and Lev Hart, but also to Allyson Whipple, who not only judged but sat in for me on the recording of the judging when I was in a bit of a pickle. She’s a star… and you may know this already but she is taking on the editorship of Frogpond Journal next year. Good luck to you Allyson , I hope that won’t mean we hear less from you. Do support Allyson in her new role and inundate her with your work, when you’re not sending it to me of course. See you next week for season 8!

Why do you need to have a listen to this week's and last week's podcasts? Well because the first submission period of 2025, yes, 2025 is nearly upon us, and it's scifiku. Just scifiku. One of the last things Debbie said to me was something along the lines that she wouldn’t be her if she didn’t write about Mars. So I’d like you to follow in Debbie’s footsteps and write about all things scifi. To help you along the way I’ve got some favourites from the episode previously inspired by Debbie which were published in Journal 2:22, some poems from scifiku masters and to end a little bit more Debbie. One very important thing to tell you before we head over to the poetry… I have an open submission period, deadline 21 December 2024 for Split Sequences. You can write them on your own, or collaborate with your mates, either way, there will be a print and PDF version of Split Peas, the Poetry Pea split sequences journal, out early in 2025. Don’t miss the deadline for submissions! show notes

Today we are celebrating the humble tortoise in poetry, here at Poetry Pea. If you are a regular you may well know that this little reptile is one of my favourites, actually I think it's the only reptile I could say I like. I’ve wanted to have one as a pet since I was a small child. Well some things have changed, I’m older, but more healthy so bad news and good news there. I was curious as to how the podcast had changed, I barely remember the early days (post-menopausal brain and the recent bump to the head probably). Last time I outlined the development of waka, prior to the late 1800s and gave you some idea as to why waka was becoming a disappointing art. I left you with the promise that this time you were going to hear what happened to waka during the initial tanka reforms and thereafter. So that’s what I have for you today. Tanka reforms, the initial ideas and the concepts and movements that flowed from them. It's more interesting than you might think. Of course I do have lots of poems to read to you as well. show notes

The next couple of months I’m going to intersperse our haiku and senryu poetry podcasts with podcasts about tanka, because we’re going to have a go at writing them in November 2024. Today I’m looking at the premodern period, so a poetry type known as waka, composed before the tanka reforms of the late 1800s. By the end of the podcast you should know a bit about the history of waka and see the development of the form in this pre tanka world. It’s starting to look like something we might just recognise in our contemporary works. Don’t worry if you don’t immediately get them, we’ll look at them again. Links in the show notes

Next month, July 2024, we are writing senryū together. To inspire your creativity and to give you a background in the history of senryū I’m running a series of podcasts all about them. This is the second one, the first was episode 23 of this series, so it would make sense to go back and listen or watch that one before you crack on with this. Unfortunately while I was preparing for this series of podcasts, my dear husband brought a rather nasty cold into the house and kindly shared it with me, and I spent more time sleeping away the virus than I would have liked, so apologies, this podcast isn’t as long as I’d like it to be, but I do have some great senryū to share with you, recommendations for what we’d like to see in the submissions and a little story. Hello I’m Patricia and you are most welcome to join me on a journey to senryū on this the Poetry Pea Cast. Show notes here at poetrypea.com

Over the next month or so I’ll be looking at senryū. At why senryū are often seen as a lesser form of poetry, at senryū in the pre modern era in Japan, ie. pre 1868 and how they developed from that point on both in the Japan and in the English speaking world. It has been a fascinating study from a poetry and an historical point of view. I’ve always thought that haiku can instruct us about life in the past, but as I hope to show you, senryū can give you a fascinating insight into the past. It has also left me with a couple of historical events that I’ll bring you at some time in the future. A reminder to make sure you are signed up to the Poetry Pea mailing as a very important email will be going out very, very soon, which if you write poetry, you will not want to miss. Also a favour, if you could review the podcast, or like and share it with other poets that would be fantastic. Thank you. Today I’m going to have a look at pre modern senryū. At the end of my podcasts on senryū, and there will be a couple at least, I will have an essay for you. Episode 10 of the Haiku Pea podcast all about Haiku from www.poetrypea.com. It’s snowing again here in Zürich. My apologies if you can here the icy snowflakes falling on the roof of my studio. I hope the weather is better where you are. So last week I told you about the new pages on the website which recommend books and websites which I have found useful and this week, I’d like to tell you about another new feature on the website, which I will build up over time, publications, blogs etc which will accept submission. On that topic, here are a few things you can prepare for now. Everything has links on the poetrypea.com website. Have a look at the drop down menu under submissions. February is International haiku month. There’ll be lots of things going on. Here’s a couple to highlight. My Haiku Pond: which is on Facebook? It’s run by Michael Smeer and is challenging you to write a new haiku every day for the duration of the month of February. It’s only open to members, but I recommend becoming a member because it’s a very useful discussion site. NaHaiWriMo which stands for national haiku writing month is also challenging you to write a haiku every day for the month of February. Join in! Bones journal, a journal specialising in contemporary haiku is taking submissions now for 2018 January 15 - February 15 for the March 15 th 2018 issue The Golden Triangle Haiku competition which I find just superb. The final submission date is soon so get cracking, as we say in Britain. Episode 8 the latest podcast from www.poetrypea.com A mixed bag but mostly snow.... yuk Welcome to episode 8 of the Haiku Pea, a podcast all about Haiku,. I’m Patricia, your host and I hope over time to share some of my daily haiku, submissions from you my wonderful listener and tips for writing that I glean along my journey. This is the first podcast after the Christmas break. If you remember, I was looking forward to welcoming my family home again for the holidays and maybe getting them to write with me. Well, home they came, complete with flu, which I managed to catch and still have, so apologies for the voice if it breaks. We spent a couple of lovely weeks together despite being ill, but my plan to galvanise them into writing didn’t come off. Maybe they will be home for Easter, without bugs, and we can try again. I said to you last time that I had some great submissions and this week we are going to kick off with Devin Harrison. He submitted some really terrific work and will be featured throughout the year. He also sent me some thoughts on haiku that I think are worth exploring further, so I hope he and I will get a chance to talk further and I can share the results of these conversations with you. For this week though you will find out a little bit about him. I want to change the format slightly this week and see what you think. You can read all this week’s daily haiku, a mixed bag but mostly about one of my least favourite things.... snow. and also Devin’s guest haiku on the poetrypea website, so what I thought I would do is share the evolution or otherwise of some of my haiku with you, As well as Devin’s haiku and some information about him, and recommendations from Devin and I for reading.

Episode 7 of the Haiku Pea podcast, all about Haiku, from www.poetrypea.com. I’m Patricia and I hope over time to share my daily haiku, submissions from you my wonderful listener and tips for writing that I glean along my journey. RECOMMENDED READING: Haiku in English- the first hundred years and it’s edited by Jim Kacian, Philip Rowland and Allan Burns and it really was a great find. It has haiku by Ezra Pound, e.e. cummings, Alan Ginsberg and my particular favourite Seamus Heaney to name but a few. It’s a really great read. I’ll put the details in the show notes so you can check it out.

The Haiku Pea podcast from www.poetrypea.com Welcome to episode 6. At the end of last week’s episode you will have noticed a difference in the tone. I went on holiday, travelling from the cold early winter of the northern hemisphere to the much warmer climes of the start of summer in the southern, I travelled to the beautiful island of Mauritius. It was quite inspirational in a way that surprised me. Shall we have a listen together? Guest Haiku this week from Hannes Froehlich. Thanks Hannes.

Welcome to episode 4 of the Haiku Pea podcast. from www.poetrypea.com A podcast for Haiku, where I hope over time to share my daily haiku, submissions from you and tips for writing that I glean along my journey. I’m surprised and cautiously optimistic about submissions as they have started to come in already. Even so it would be great if you could spread the word that people can get a Showcase here on The Haiku Pea podcast and the website of course, www.poetrypea.com. This week I did lots of walking both here in the Woodlands and hills of Zürich and up in the mountains around the JungFrau and the Eiger, where the snow has started to fall. You can really feel winter creeping in here in Switzerland. I find this time of year can be a bit gloomy, don’t you? Then a couple of days in the UK over the weekend to catch up with friends and family. Something to lift the clouds. As I said, I’m delighted that submissions are starting to come in for the guest haiku slot and this week I'm featuring a Haiku from Amelia. Thanks Amelia. It's interesting that the first two Haiku that I’m featuring both come from writers with a connection to Manchester in England. Is Manchester a home for the Haiku? If you have Haiku you’d like to submit, please go to the poetrypea website and read the submissions page. I take the view that Jane Reichhold has "no one really knows how to write a haiku” and so she says "try strict rules, try breaking the rules… But keep trying." All haiku writing is welcome! Send them in...
Mon, November 13, 2017
