Over the last few decades, tourists have been going out of their way to see places before they disappear, from Antartica to Australia. This has been deemed "Last-chance tourism". In Oaxaca, Mexico, there’s a growing trend of Canadian snowbirds buying up beachfront land, being promised that these properties will be the perfect vacation home. Thinking back to the flights you've taken in the last few years, how many times have you noticed a woman-identifying pilot boarding the plane, or making those in-flight announcements? What is responsible travel? We’ve been unpacking this question for years, looking for tangible ways that we can be more responsible travelers. Sure, we can cut down on how much we fly, and book small, independently owned hotels… but these are all individual actions. Is it really fair to put the pressure on individual travelers to be responsible, when at the root, the real challenges in responsible tourism are systemic? On this season, we’re unpacking whether responsible tourism could be a larger social movement. We’ll talk about why it’s problematic to romanticize rural place. We’re exploring what happens when tourism gentrifies, whether or not it’s ethical to visit zoos, and the true meaning behind common language used in the travel industry, like “bucket list”. --- If you're a fan of the show, don't forget to subscribe, rate and review Curious Tourism: Responsible Travel Podcast! Global travelers still don't think much about Indigenous tourism when they think about travel to Canada. Post cards show Royal Canadian Mounted Police and maple syrup. But Canada has a long, rich, and diverse history that was shaped by the people who were here first: Canada’s First Nations. We're talking to Keith Henry, President and CEO of the Indigenous Tourism Association of Canada (ITAC) to find out what economic reconciliation looks like for the travel industry. We discuss the impact of bringing back place names across the country, the importance of bloggers and travel influencers on Indigenous tourism, and get a sense of the demand for Indigenous knowledge across the sector, the country, and the world. In the opening, we discuss recent criticisms of AirBnB - from outrageous cleaning fees and long lists of chores, to its impact on housing crisis' - and share some hacks on how to avoid AirBnB all together. Wheelchair users around the globe are having some of the worst travel experiences imaginable, because aircrafts do not allow wheelchairs to roll right on. Most mobility devices have to be stowed in the cargo hold along with luggage. But mobility devices aren’t just luggage. This system is resulting in thousands of dollars worth of damage to wheelchairs, and scary, uncomfortable experiences for travelers with disabilities. We talk to Maayan Ziv and Chris Wood to unpack why inclusive air travel is lagging, how accessible air travel in a human right, and what legislation and changes are needed to make it possible for wheelchairs to roll right on. Traveling within Canada is incredibly difficult. The quick options are expensive and the cheap options take FOREVER! The transport landscape in Canada is extremely limited, which means that if you don’t have a car, there are barriers to get around. This is a problem not just for people in Canada, but for people who would like to visit and spend tourism dollars here. In the 1960s and 1970s young people from the UK, Europe, America and elsewhere, hopped on bus services or into their own converted vehicles, to travel from Europe to South Asia. This epic overland trip often lasted from several weeks to several months long. Along the overland route, travelers would gather in popular spots like Istanbul, Kathmandu, and Goa. When Westerners travel to India, they occasionally experience culture shock that can feel overwhelming. In some cases, the experience of being immersed in a new place becomes too much. “India Syndrome,” a psychosis said to effect Westerners seeking spiritual enlightenment in India, has been cited as the cause behind the disappearance and deaths of travellers in India... but is "India Syndrome" real? We unpack "India syndrome" with Caroline Slaughter. Caroline is a filmmaker and podcaster, and her recent podcast Astray investigates the phenomenon of India syndrome in depth. Women are often told that they shouldn’t travel alone. We’re warned that it’s dangerous, and we need to be careful. But this doesn’t mean that women shouldn’t travel. And in fact, by traveling, women can challenge the status quo. We chat with Juvena Huang, who wanders the world by scooter. As a young woman, she rode 44,000 kilometres across 25 countries, from Singapore to Europe, on her trusty Vespa. Juvena joins us to share stories from her travels, what it's like to travel by scooter, and her thoughts on women traveling solo. There are just two northern white rhinos left in the world. Staggering rates of illegal hunting for its horn have led to its (almost certain) extinction in the wild. The rise of conservation tourism, or, safaris, is one way that tourists can support species that are going extinct. But how effective is conservation tourism? James Mwenda joins the podcast to tell us about conservation and our role as tourists in protecting endangered species and our planet. James was a caretaker for the last northern white rhinos at the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, and now he has started his own expedition company, Jemu Expeditions, to show travellers to Kenya what he loves most about his country. The decisions we make as travelers impact more than just us. Our travels impact the communities we visit, in different ways, from economic, to even political. And nowadays, health is a major factor, too. Erin is joined by JoAnna Haugen, a solutions-oriented writer, editor, and public speaker who works at the intersection of sustainable travel, environmental conservation, and community-based advocacy efforts. It’s been feeling like the travel industry is slowly but surely coming back to life. But we can’t help but feel a little cynical about this return to travel. The pandemic is still raging around the world, we're facing the growing consequences of a climate crisis, and we're continuing to grapple with inequity in our communities. It seems more important than ever to make sure that when we travel, we do it right. So where do we start? On this season of the podcast, I’m digging even deeper into what it really means to be a responsible traveler. With the help of my producer Kattie, we’ll chat with thought leaders, activists, and passionate travelers - exploring questions like: How important is it to decenter yourself as a traveller? How will climate change impact tourism, and travel as we know it? And, is the era of Space Tourism here? And if so, is that something we even need ? I am itching to book my next adventure, and I’m sure you are too. So, there’s no better time to be having these conversations. Throughout the season, I’ll share some of my own travel stories - and mishaps - with you. And along the way, we’ll all learn how we can return to travel in a way that’s better for us, and for the planet. -------------------------------------------------------------- If you're a fan of the show, don't forget to subscribe, rate and review Curious Tourism: Responsible Travel Podcast! Traveling often means changes in our routines, unpredictable moments, new sights, new languages, and new sounds. While all of us are likely familiar with these challenges on some level, for autistic people, they can be especially tough. In this episode, we’re exploring how the Autism spectrum impacts travel. Back in March this year, Coronavirus halted travel as we know it. And while we might not be able to actually get out there and see the world, we can dream, we can reminisce, and well, we can talk about it! Don’t worry - this season of Curious Tourism won’t be all about Coronavirus, I promise. What it will be about is the intersections of travel and identity and privilege. This season will explore the impact that travel has on our lives, and the communities we interact with as tourists. I’m back, along with my producer Kattie, to dive deep into the world of responsible travel and tourism. How can we do it right and how we can make tourism more accessible for everyone. Join me every other Wednesday starting October 7th for a new season of Curious Tourism (formerly known as Alpaca My Bags), as I tackle these questions and so many more. We’ll learn about how we can be better travelers, and create a travel industry that is more equitable in representation. In the old days, around the year 2014, a "travel influencer" was usually a blogger, who earned a decent amount of hits on their website, and some social media followers. How do you know if something you’re doing, or wearing, is cultural appropriation? What is cultural appropriation? And is it bad? These seem like questions that would have straight-forward answers. But they don’t. That’s because cultural appropriation is full of nuance, and it’s this nuance that we’re unpacking. In this episode, we're joined by Melissa Chan, discussing the history of C.A., its points of contention in pop culture, and how it comes up during travel. In November 2019, The Guardian published a headline reading,“Concerns over rise in dark tourism in Syria as war enters ninth year.” The piece argued that there’s been a rise of western tourists heading to Syria, and that they’ve been met with criticism from locals. Tourists headed to Saudi Arabia and to Afghanistan have been met with similar criticism. After our chat with Andrew Drury about extreme travel last year, he encouraged us to reach out to James Willcox, co-founder of Untamed Borders - so we did. Untamed Borders is an adventure travel company that guides tourists into regions that are difficult to access, including Congo, Sudan, Afghanistan, Syria, Saudi Arabia, and Yemen. So what does it mean to travel to regions that aren’t easily accessible because of conflict, or geopolitics? Is this “dark tourism"? Are there benefits to this kind of tourism? We're looking at sustainable travel at ground level. We're back with Earth Wanderess, Evelina Utterdahl, and this time Greg Hill to discuss our earth-bound travel habits and how we can do better. Around the world, from Nicaragua to Morocco, women’s surf camps are popping up. It seems clear that in countries with traditional views of gender, surfing has emerged as hobby for women. But it’s also an expression of freedom, and sometimes protest. Karam Masri joins Erin to discuss her experience at surf camps around the world, and how her identity as a plus-sized, brown woman has influenced her experiences traveling. The story of surfing and empowerment extends beyond the surf retreats that have become popular for North American women - in other parts of the world, surfing has become an expression of opposition to patriarchy. The way that we travel is constantly changing. Just 20 years ago, for example, travelers didn't have Google Maps to guide them, or social media to keep them connected to family and friends at home. Join Erin as she chats with a fellow solo woman traveler, Valika Kunkel. Valika tells the story of how she boarded her first transatlantic flight in the early 60s at age 13 - completely alone. She shares her experiences from traveling by car through Soviet Russia to connecting with other travelers on trains, without the help of social media! There is a small subset of travelers that take travel thrills to the extreme. Very extreme. Andrew Drury joins us in this episode to discuss the ethics around extreme travel. To date, Andrew has ventured into insurgent Afghanistan, he’s been threatened at gun-point by the KKK, and he’s encountered ISIS in the Middle East. Andrew's adventures have been the subject of many news articles, and, you might recognize him from the Netflix show, Dark Tourist. Erin questions the power imbalance between extreme tourists and local guides, and discusses the focus on truth-finding in conflict zones. It is possible to learn the complexities of a country that is stereotyped by war? ...And should we travel there? When people talk about travel, they often bring up “danger.” When you share where you're traveling to next, how often are you asked, "But is that safe?". Canada is known for its beautiful mountains, wild nature, cosmopolitan cities and more. But what’s lacking from our tourism is Indigenous representation. The National Post published an article earlier this year arguing that Canada’s “branding” as a place to visit is completely void of Indigenous culture, and that incorporating Indigenous culture would boost tourism and support Indigenous communities. We invited Ryan McMahon, host of Red Man Laughing and CANADALAND's Thunder Bay, on the podcast to help us delve into this discussion.
