One of host & author Emily White's goals in life is for songwriters to be able to clearly define music publishing in a way that they understand and can communicate to others. As well as collect on their music publishing in full. As publishing is the #1 missing revenue stream Emily identifies in her years of conversations with musicians. This episode will simply break down exactly that as well as share best practices to put yourself in a position to land sync placements - songs in film, TV, ads, video games, web shows and more. To do so, there is no one else Emily wanted to speak to other than Matthew Wang whom Emily initially met when he was interning with composing legend Hans Zimmer. Wang has written music for a vast range of different projects—from the Pharrell Williams-executive produced Netflix kids program Brainchild (2018), to Shaquille O’Neal’s basketball animated short HeadNoise (2021), for which he was awarded a Hollywood Music In Media Award in the category Best Song for Short Film. His extensive television composing credits include NBC’s The Young Rock (2022) and New Amsterdam (2018-2022), Showtime’s Yellowjackets (2021-2022), Hulu’s Shrill (2019-2021), Netflix’s Ginny and Georgia (2021) and Glow (2019), HBO’s Mrs. Fletcher (2019). He found his first feature film in IFC Midnight’s thriller Centigrade (2020), which he co-composed alongside Trey Toy, and went on to co-compose the television films RENO! 911: It's a Wonderful Heist (2022) and RENO! 911: The Hunt for QANON (2021) with Craig Wedren. Wang has also worked with Devo & composing icon Mark Mothersbaugh. We hope you learn as much as Emily did from this powerful conversation with Matthew! How do you build a sustainable music career? You start by making great art, which we covered in the previous episode. The other component is to collect as much direct to fan contact information from your audience as possible, ideally in the form of their mobile phone number. This episode explains how to do just that with Community.com, which is the go-to platform to text your fans about your music, shows & more and was built for musicians. We do so by digging in with Community's Head of Music, Erica Fagundes. We also explore Erica's phenomenal career, which led her to where she today - empowering artists to communicate directly with their fans, instead of solely relying on algorithms & trends that come and go. It's time to release your music! But how do you do so to maximize revenue? Your fans want to support you in the best way possible, but they don't know how if you don't tell them. We covered launching a pre-order in S2.2/E29 of this season, Pre-Recording Marketing Foundation, so you should already be monetizing your music before it's even out. When release day is here, Host Emily White reminds that you'll collect the most fan data for longterm monetization & receive the highest profit margins by sharing that your music is out on your website on release day. It can absolutely be on streaming platforms as well. But sharing your streaming links & news can wait a day or two, even though we know you're excited! On Day Two of your release week, Emily recommends sharing that it's on Bandcamp (again, it can be on Bandcamp on Day 1; we're talking about what you are communicating to your audience so they can support you in the best way for you). And then on that third day, push out on social media, etc that your music is out on streaming platforms. Doing so in this manner will put yourself in a position to make dollars, 10's of dollars, hundreds & thousands of dollars (or your equivalent local currency), vs fractions of a penny on streaming. Sharing your music in this order also ensures you get as much fan data as possible. With this data you can directly communicate with your audience for years to come when social media platforms come & go (hello MySpace!) & you aren't beholden to algorithm changes. Phew! That said, we want you to maximize your success on streaming as well and to do so, Emily chats with CD Baby's Chief Revenue Officer Christine Barnum. It's time to record! The digital revolution has leveled the playing field with regard to accessing recording tools. But with such a wide array of options, it can be overwhelming to know where to begin, as well as know when a recording is finished. Or is it ever? This is the second of three bonus episodes to wrap the first season of The How to Build a Sustainable Music Career and Collect All Revenue Streams Podcast! Host and Author Emily White was a global tour manager from ages 20-23. The touring crew world is a family that White cherishes deeply but realized there aren't always formal resources with basic information on what industry standards and norms are for those who dream of becoming a touring crew member. To share this information White interviews world class tour manager Noamme Elisha who has worked with Broken Social Scene, Sylvan Esso, Courtney Barnett, Tame Impala, K.Flay, COIN, among others. White also chats with her dear friend, Lighting Designer Jeff Maker, on how he got to where he is designing and programing the lighting for tours with All Time Low, The Dresden Dolls, Our Last Night, Dropkick Murphys, Good Charlotte, Pierce The Veil, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, The Gaslight Anthem, Yellowcard, Brand New, Boys Like Girls, The Click Five and more. This podcast, and the book it's based on, is written for the perspective of the musician who writes, records, and performs live. However listener Brian D wrote to Emily and asked how he can move his career forward without being a songwriter. He said, "I am a drummer trying to get my name out there to bigger artists." And thus this bonus episode titled "How to Be a Session Musician" was born. Host and Author Emily White immediately thought of her longtime friend, Brian Viglione, for this episode. Brian is a world-class drummer whose band The Dresden Dolls has experienced the heights of success while he's parlayed that into a career recording with Nine Inch Nails and playing with one of his childhood heroes, The Violent Femmes. Tune in to hear how Brian has built a successful career as a session, touring musician and more. Also! Amaechi Uzoigwe's resume / CV speaks for itself as Co-Manager of Run the Jewels, Co-Founder of Studio A, an investor, advocate, and more. But to host Emily White, he is pure inspiration as a human being. This is a candid conversation on Amaechi's career and rise to becoming one of the top managers and most respected minds in the industry. However his journey has been far from a straight and narrow path. Settle in to learn how getting out there to do the work, and always doing right by artists, can lead to organic professional relationships that last a career and a lifetime. Similarly, Amaechi is a true modern manager in the sense that his work in film, branding, and activating around causes important to Africa & Africans throughout the Diaspora takes his work and artists to the next level and beyond. As we begin to wrap up the series of this podcast based on Emily's book of the same name, she felt it was crucial to speak with Amaechi and share his story with you. This is the second episode where Host Emily White interviews a handpicked artist to discuss the concept of the book this podcast is based on, in particular Chapter 11 - Repeat & Grow! As we've *just* about covered the entire modern music industry, now it's on you to go back to Chapter 1 (Get Your Art Together) to begin the process again. This episode takes you through Artist Nikki Hill's journey, who has been doing just that. Nikki Hill has created a path outside of the norm and molding her own image has been a lifelong brand for the singer, songwriter, and bandleader. With the lack of exposure for Black soul-rock singers/entertainers, Nikki found herself being misinterpreted. She became known in some circles just as much for confusing local audiences who initially assumed a different vibe based on her photo, as she did for leading an explosive, soulful, not-to-be-missed electric guitar-driven performance. Refusing to let the experience undo her path, Hill embraced the muse and jumped into the process of probing the vital role that Black women played in what became rock ‘n’ roll. As word spread, so did interest, allowing Hill opportunities to open for a range of artists like Dr. John, Aaron Neville, Los Lobos, to Eileen Jewel and Nelly, before any music was released. Nikki continued to develop her sound, learning with trial and error, a lot of road mileage, self-releasing albums, and carving out a place for herself, and hopefully a place for other people going through similar struggles. Host Emily White reviews all revenue streams you should be collecting on if you write, record / release, and play music live. If not, you’re missing out on money! This also ensures that musician’s aren’t *missing* any revenue streams. As if there’s a blank entry in the spreadsheet, you are missing out on revenue. In the previous episode, Host Emily White discusses the importance of "direct to fan" distribution as the foundation of building a sustainable music career. The next step on a musician's journey is to distribute to "DSP's" or digital service providers - e.g. Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, Deezer, etc. In the book this podcast is based on, Emily explains when artists should use CD Baby and when Tunecore is the right fit. Since its publication Emily has been asked by musicians how DistroKid fits into the space. This episode explains exactly that. Our episode's guest is Milwaukee based musician Cullah, who has been releasing an album a year on his birthday since he was 15. Now 30, Cullah recently released his 15th album 1/2, as he has been releasing music for half of his life. Emily and Cullah discuss aggregators and dig into how Cullah is building a sustainable music career. Happy listening! "Direct to fan" distribution is the foundation of building a sustainable music career. Technology companies are the most valuable entities in the world. Why? Because they have all of our data. Musicians and creators need to view themselves through this lens, instead of just giving their fans' data away to technology companies without knowing who is listening to their music. Musicians can do this by collecting as many email addresses and mobile phone numbers as possible to communicate with their audience directly forever. This episode breaks down why you need to be selling music through your website and on Bandcamp. Bandcamp has been at the forefront of the direct to fan revolution, paying out $751 Million USD over the past decade to artists and rights holders. To dig in further on this crucial topic, host Emily White interviews Bandcamp founder Ethan Diamond. Also! Today’s episode is brought to you by the amazing folks at Bandzoogle . Built by musicians for musicians, #Bandzoogle is an all-in-one platform that makes it easy to build a stunning website and EPK for your music. Music publishing has brought fear and confusion to many songwriters over the years. And Host Emily White understands why! There are horror stories of songwriters signing their publishing rights away for a nominal advance in the 20th century, only for their catalog to go on to make millions. But first, what *is* music publishing? And how do you collect on it? The good news is, music publishing is more simple than you might think, and the modern music industry offers ways to collect on that revenue while also retaining your rights. This episode explores all options for collecting on your music publishing revenue. Emily interviews Songtrust President Molly Neuman for a deeper dive into this topic, while also discussing Molly's incredible career. Happy listening! Questions? Reach out to @EmWizzle on Twitter . All songwriters need to sign up for a performing rights organization or "P.R.O." in their country. Unfortunately Host Emily White has met many songwriters who have been fearful to do so. She’s also met young songwriters who figured they would join a PRO when they're further along in their career. This episode is here to quell those fears and encourage you to sign up for a PRO in your country NOW. The next chapter in the book this podcast is based on is "How to Record With or Without a Budget." Host Emily White initially thought of Imogen Heap for this episode, as she is the first woman to win Best Engineered Album at The Grammys. However Emily realized she'd be remiss if the interview was limited to recording, and instead interviews Imogen on her iconic career through the lens of the book. Emily used to tour manage Imogen and we hope you enjoy this special conversation where they catch up on Imogen's wide ranging career. In addition, Emily covers putting together a band or group agreement if you aren't a solo artist. All of this precedes Emily's exclusive interview with attorney Donald S. Passman , author of the iconic All You Need to Know About the Music Business , who has also represented artists such as Taylor Swift , Stevie Wonder , Adele , Kanye West , and more. Prior to recording, it's crucial to establish your marketing foundation as you can then authentically connect with fans to bring them on your journey. Ariel's best-selling books and award-winning Cyber PR® process marks the intersection of social media, PR, and online marketing. She's best known in both the music industry and the business world for her ability to simplify and explain things that creative minds don’t necessarily love: PR, marketing, and social media. Host Emily White had the privilege of interviewing Bon Iver's Justin Vernon for her students at New York University's Clive Davis Institute prior to the pandemic. White realized this conversation perfectly brought to life Chapter 1 of How to Build a Sustainable Music Career and Collect All Revenue Streams - Get Your Art Together. Bon Iver's management kindly gave their blessing to share this interview in podcast form. White feels that anyone can achieve this book's and podcast's title. However the art must be great to do so. As artists and industry folks, it's natural to get caught up with what happens after music is made (marketing, distribution, etc.). However one will not be successful if the art isn't great. So much so that White is constantly reminding those in her profession of Chapter 1's title - Get Your Art Together. And why one shouldn't move on until they know they are "ripe" and ready to record, ensuring their songs, players, and vision are truly in the best place possible while creating from one's heart and soul. We hope you enjoy this very special interview with Justin Vernon by Emily and her students. Happy listening! Questions? Reach out to @EmWizzle on Twitter . Zoë Keating is the only musician Host Emily White has ever met that does not need to read the book this podcast is based on. Zoë is an old and dear friend of Emily's, as they first met when Emily was tour managing Zoë and Imogen Heap in the Winter of 2006. Emily interviewed Zoë for the book's foreword which is available via an exclusive excerpt with Hypebot here . This podcast episode is the audio recording of that conversation and contains more than what is available in the book and Hypebot piece. In fact, Emily never planned on releasing this conversation as it was initially recorded so Emily could transcribe Zoë's words for the book's foreword. With Zoë's blessing this conversation is now a podcast episode for the world to hear. Emily personally loves the foreword of the book as much as the entire book! And the feedback from the written version of Zoë's thoughts has been overwhelming from artists in the best possible ways. We hope you enjoy this conversation between Emily White and the incomparable Zoë Keating on how Zoë continues to build a sustainable music career and collects all revenue streams. Happy listening! Welcome to How to Build a Sustainable Music Career and Collect All Revenue Streams! Based on Emily White's #1 Amazon best-selling book of the same name , this debut episode gives you an overview of the book and this podcast series. Emily has never seen the modern music industry presented to artists in order - from creation to execution or recording to release. Similarly, as a veteran of the industry, Emily was repeatedly finding money owed to artists. She realized that if this was happening to artists with large followings and teams in place, that it was most likely happening to countless artists. Thus, How to Build a Sustainable Music Career and Collect All Revenue Streams was born. This podcast takes you through each chapter of Emily's book, with hand-picked guests who breathe life into each chapter's topic, taking the listener along their own journey to achieve the podcast's title. Tune in every Monday for a new episode. Next week Emily will be releasing her interview with Zoë Keating, which is the foundation of the foreword of the book, as Zoë is one of the only artists Emily has ever met that doesn't need to read this book. We hope you enjoy and look forward to experiencing this odyssey with you! Questions? Reach out to @EmWizzle on Twitter .
