Can fear-based leadership really cripple an organization's success? Join me as we unravel the complexities of fear-driven tactics in leadership and their counterproductive impact on team morale and productivity. Drawing from my experience as a performance coach, I share insights into the pressures that can lead even well-intentioned leaders to adopt intimidating behaviors that stifle autonomy and drive skilled employees away. We'll identify key traits of fear-based leadership, such as dominating conversations and using titles to intimidate, while distinguishing them from assertive leadership practices that effectively guide teams through challenging times. In today's discussion performance mindset coach, Sean Hansen, reflects on an observation that stems from the 360 reviews that he does for his leadership clients. So frequently, leaders believe that their eccentricities or flaws can be hidden away with enough grit and determination. Yet every time that Sean does a 360 on a leader and asks that leader what their flaws or weak points are, the answers predominantly match up with what the various respondents to the 360 have also observed. So, would it be better if we owned our challenges outright instead of trying to hide them? In today's discussion, performance mindset coach, Sean Hansen, is recording on the US holiday of Memorial Day. How does a holiday commemorating fallen military service members connect to a Marvel Comics character? In the movie, Thor: Ragnarok , there is a scene where Thor is speaking with his deceased father, Odin, lamenting the fact that Thor is not powerful enough to defeat the Goddess of Death, in part because she destroyed Thor's magical war hammer. To this, Odin asks Thor whether he is the God of Thunder or the God of Hammers. The loss of Thor's hammer and the ensuing destruction of Thor's home world are emblematic of Thor's journey in shedding his reliance on external factors and a recognition that in order for a new path to be born the old path had to be destroyed. In today's discussion, performance mindset coach, Sean Hansen, shares a deep realization that he had about how people seek to grit or muscle their way through discomfort. Recently, another wild fire broke out near Sean's home, which prompted a reactionary flare-up of frustration and exasperation. "Haven't we had enough destruction already this year!!" and "We're not even in fire season! There's still snow on the ground, how could we be having yet another wild fire so early in the year?!" This caused Sean to reflect on a conversation that he had with a client about Sean's cold shower routine. This routine has allowed Sean a daily practice of accepting discomfort, not as an exercise in 'slaying the dragon,' but as a means of practicing awareness and acceptance of what is. In today's discussion, performance mindset coach, Sean Hansen, looks at a conversation he had with someone about how they perceived that their partner was lazy and how that was negatively impacting their relationship. We so frequently assign negative connotation to laziness. That internal orientation to laziness has the capacity to warp our perspective on those around us. What would it be like if we were better able to recognize our innate bias? How might it improve our relationships if we better communicated the importance of certain acts or behaviors that the other party is doing or not doing? In today's discussion, performance mindset coach, Sean Hansen, shares some reflections from his recent PTSD anniversary related to an incident that occurred during one of his combat deployments to Iraq. In a conversation with a client, the client remarked on how fellowship is about feeling like you're "part of it." Despite all the work that Sean puts into allowing his clients to be free of a compulsion to have external validation, there is unquestionably a deep power in feeling like we belong, like we are understood. We often fail to connect with that deep power because of so many different fears, not least of which is the fear that things will get messy. But what if we allowed ourselves to give that gift to those around us? What impact might that have? In today's discussion, performance mindset coach, Sean Hansen, reflects on a passage from Marcus Aurelius's Meditations . Such as thy thoughts and ordinary cogitations are, such will thy mind be in time. This reflection, from one of Rome's most powerful and effective emperors gives meaningful insight into the power of small inputs over time. Most people's relationships with their lives are made up of tiny thoughts, emotions, and habits repeated over decades. Frequently, this shows up in terribly self-critical and self-destructive language that depresses the person and what they are attempting to achieve in their life. Mastering one's inner language offers a way out of this long-running trap. Often, high performers confuse their rigidity for a sense of resilience. Their focus is often on the ways in which they have succeeded despite all the odds being against them. In today's discussion, performance mindset coach, Sean Hansen, sets off on a potentially polarizing discussion about what we can learn from different response approaches to a virus. In the global pandemic we have seen different approaches being used to help people survive the virus. Before we go any further, let's be clear that Sean is not advocating for or against any medical course of action in regard to the pandemic or any other illness. It is simply that these different approaches can serve as useful metaphor for how we as individuals maintain healthy personal and professional lives from the sense of our relationships, sense of fulfillment, and emotional well-being, and not from a medical perspective. In today's discussion, performance mindset coach, Sean Hansen, discusses the gripping topic of veteran suicide and psychedelic-assisted therapy with the co-founders of Veterans Exploring Treatment Solutions (VETS), a 501(c)(3) dedicated to ending the veteran suicide epidemic. Marcus and Amber Capone have a 20+ year history of never giving up on one another. After meeting at Southern Illinois University in 1997 and marrying three years later, the young couple moved to Coronado, CA where Marcus began training to become a U.S. Navy SEAL, graduating with BUD/S class 236 just one month after the attacks of 9/11. Like many military families, the Capones adapted to the high operational tempo of combat deployments and wartime training cycles, sometimes keeping Marcus away from home for up to 300 days per year. After 13 years and 7 tours, it was the transition away from the SEAL teams that would prove to be the greatest challenge yet. After years of escalating hardships, misdiagnoses, and failed avenues of healing, Amber was able to arrange for Marcus to leave the U.S. in 2017 to undergo a plant medicine experience; an intervention the couple attributes to saving his life as well as their family. Marcus immediately felt a deep conviction to pay this healing forward to his former teammates, which subsequently launched a successful grassroots effort that culminated in the official formation of VETS in 2019. As a 501(c)(3) organization, VETS provides resources, research, and advocacy for U.S. veterans seeking healing through psychedelic-assisted therapy alternatives. To date, VETS has raised funding for over 400 Special Operations veterans to receive this critical lifeline. Marcus and Amber are committed to fighting for veterans and their families just as hard as they’ve fought for their own, with an ultimate goal of making these therapies available within the borders of the United States for all who need them. Moreover, that they engage in various narratives of judgment and ridicule about their perception that they're not holding things together. What if you could connect with the idea that you deserve to feel your emotions? Moreover, that you don't have to be embarrassed by them or think that you are less than because you experience emotion while in a professional context. Additionally, so many of us have the confused notion that the way we feel in any given moment, or the thought that happens to be occupying our mind at present, represents the self. But, a person is more than his or her thoughts and feelings. Curious? Come along for the discussion. In today's discussion, performance mindset coach, Sean Hansen, looks at the ways in people de-value their desires by masking them in the language of "need," "must," "should," and "have to." In today's discussion, performance mindset coach, Sean Hansen, tackles a couple key points to help people access sustainable high performance by exploring the concept of receiving. Frequently, high performers pursue performance from a foundation of shame and guilt that has them connected to a deep sense of punishment. Although they are able to "get in gear," it comes with an inherent cost to motivation and engagement in the long-term. Being able to receive help and operate from a place of ease is challenging but yields tangible benefits in one's relationships and ability to perform over the long-term. In today's discussion, performance mindset coach, Sean Hansen, dives back into an inquiry from the leadership community on LinkedIn. That is, when it comes to organizational change, how do people react to and lead through it? An interesting historical example for leading through change comes from various Native American tribes that had a bifurcated leadership structure. There was a peace time leader who was responsible for the day-to-day governance of the tribe during routine times. Then there was a war time leader who took over leadership during times of crisis or war when more decisive action was needed. Today's discussion looks at possible ways that this is accessed within organizations and what leaders might do to bifurcate themselves in adapting to crisis and demonstrating a different leadership behavior. In today's discussion, performance mindset coach, Sean Hansen, explores the ways in which our boundaries end up being transgressed and what we might do about it. Fundamentally, it's a process of gaining clarity on our values to better understand what it is we want to defend with our boundaries. From there, it's about the communication of those boundaries and the actions we take to ensure that other people respect the boundaries we set. Of course, none of that happens without having the internal sense of worth, either implicitly in ourselves or the value that's being defended, that motivates us to consistently uphold the boundary we've set. In today's discussion, performance mindset coach, Sean Hansen, greets the new year with an exploration on feeling broken. Sounds like a depressing way to start the year, right? Some may see it that, but in the discussion we look at how what some people call hitting rock bottom is also hitting bed rock. Bed rock, that place of indescribable solidity and certainty from which new beginnings emerge. It's 2021, let's get after it. In today's discussion, performance mindset coach, Sean Hansen, looks at the upcoming year's end. It's at this time of year that all the leadership and productivity ninjas start breaking out their guides for year-end reviews and setting up your big audacious goals for what you want to accomplish in the following year. That is excellent. For those looking for a tremendous resource in the tactical side of productivity, I have often recommended The Productivity Show by Asian Efficiency. I have never met the people who run that podcast, but the advice on that show is on point and highly actionable. Plus, they experiment with a ton of apps, software, and gadgets to help determine what really creates a more productive work day. But, there is a piece that's missing from that discussion. This exploration is inspired by a conversation I had with my friend and fellow coach, Dan Luna in episode 20 . Notably, where are you connecting to the light and laughter inside yourself? Where are you allowing a seemingly never ending flow of tasks and commitments to drown out the light that once inspired you? When did genuine laughter that flowed out of you turn into choked barks of sarcasm? How is that you want to turn those things around in the next year? After spending years immersed in learning the core principles and truths that underpin the world’s philosophies, religions, spiritual traditions, personal development frameworks, and business methodologies, and applying them to his life and business, he realized that he was uncovering a path that could empower people and businesses to realize their potential, thrive, and experience profound meaning and fulfillment – just as it had done for him. As he began sharing this path with others, he witnessed the powerful impact of this work on them and the world around them, and never looked back. Omri currently divides his time between coaching entrepreneurs, executives, and high achieving individuals, providing consulting services to businesses looking to reach new heights, and developing systems for personal development and business optimization that support the work he does with his clients. Ultimately, these systems will also serve as the foundation for the businesses that Omri plans to build to help facilitate people’s physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing on a broader scale. Join us as we talk through how faith, trust, and certainty offer distinct yet complementary benefits and how one can distinguish between the three. Omri also walks us through how the signs of resistance in his life were the most important to his continued growth and performance. Join performance mindset coach, Sean Hansen, as he discusses how viewing your relationships through the lens of value leads to a distorted view of yourself and creates breaches in alignment with your core values. Instead of value, what if you viewed your relationships and opportunities through the lens of fit? What would you be able to create in your life if you had a solid grasp of your core values, long term goals, and how the people and opportunities in your life aligned with those things? By dropping the value pressure, and looking at fit, you open up possibilities that were previously unavailable. I had a client session recently that prompted a great deal of concern for me. Moreover, it sparked some real frustration and inspired today's episode in which we dive into how the standard that you (as a leader) live, is the standard that you set. Too many leaders and companies believe that they can have time-off policies, and that they can say it's important to take time off without actually living that behavior. Completely false. All it does is set a culture that grinds people to dust. As a leader it's your responsibility to understand that your behavior, your actions, is what sets the tone, and that your organization's culture is a direct result of that. If you notice key people leaving, then you should first take a look at your own behavior, and then figure out how that behavior is burning you out and causing your people to leave. If you don't, you likely won't be successful for long. In today's episode, performance mindset coach, Sean Hansen discusses how shame and attachment distort deep human connection. He looks at the elements of shame that limit our sense of worth, even for--and often especially for--the highest performers. Moving from the discussion of shame and the value-less mindset to the concept of attachment, Sean discusses the ways in which we idealize our lives to the point of suffering instead of operating from a place of acceptance. All of them have had great success in their lives by being effective problem solvers...until they reach a place where the overwhelm and burnout is too much. Today, I'm exploring what happens when crisis turns into status quo. I go through Colonel Boyd's famous OODA loop, a tool used by military leaders to help people adapt to changing conditions more quickly. I also explore the normalizing effect and how to move forward despite the inertia and weight of the new normal. How can you operate from a place that concurrently accepts that circumstances have changed while still engaging in improving the situation, all while holding back judgment, blame, guilt, and other ineffective and unhealthy thoughts and feelings. The cave you fear to enter contains the treasure you seek. This line has often been attributed to professor Joseph Campbell. Today we take a look at what holds us back from attaining that which we want. Namely, why so many executives and leaders refuse to connect to and speak from their hearts. Before the scoffing begins, recognize that too many leaders are limiting their ability to inspire and genuinely connect with their teams because of a misguided fear that speaking from one's heart is not for the workplace. What these leaders fail to recognize is that team members who feel connected give more and put forth more effort to achieve team goals. A sad irony is that many leaders who refuse to engage their hearts at work slowly lose their ability to connect with the people in their personal life.
