Send us a text Have you ever found yourself at a crossroads, seeking God's will with more questions than answers? On Titans of Transition, I sit down with my former pastor, Roger Thompson, and we share our personal journeys in faith and leadership, addressing those very doubts and challenges. Roger takes us back to his early days in Golden, Colorado, his decision to attend Westmont College, and his pursuit of seminary school, guided by his father's teachings and the inspiring stories of missionaries. Unraveling the complexities of faith, we discuss the unique gifts God bestows on us, and how humility and expectancy helps navigate the Christian life. Ever wondered how a preacher finds his calling? I share my story, from my deep-rooted church background to my desire to go into camping ministry, and finally my path into becoming a preaching pastor at a tender age of 26. An unexpected move to a dwindling church proved challenging but led me on a path of growth and self-discovery. I also discuss my decision to step away from the church I had served for 26 years when I felt it was time for a new direction. This brought to light the power of giving oneself away in love, and how it helps us to unearth our true gifts. Life is a journey, not a bullseye. Roger and I delve into this philosophy, exploring how we navigate life without always having the final answer. Through the metaphor of climbing, we ponder on the teachings of God in everyday life and the importance of listening to the wisdom of those around us. Roger shares his personal education journey and reveals the lessons he wished he had learned earlier on. We conclude with the invaluable note on seeking help and leveraging the gifts and talents of others. Tune in for a conversation filled with wisdom, insights, and inspiration for your own journey. More about Roger- Roger Thompson is committed to serving pastors and leaders in the communities surrounding Apple Valley. As a trained Man in the Mirror expert in men’s discipleship, Roger guides pastors and leaders through a comprehensive strategy to reach and disciple all of their men because every man discipled impacts a marriage, family, workplace and community. Discipleship changes everything! Roger Thompson lives in Apple Valley (Minneapolis), MN and serves as the Area Director for the Twin Cities South Coalition for Men’s Discipleship. He was born in Winona Lake, Indiana and grew up in Colorado. After graduating, from Westmont College, and later from Denver Seminary, Roger served as a pastor for forty years. Roger is a speaker for Family Life’s “Weekends to Remember” and has recently authored a book entitled Do the Next Right Thing. Roger enjoys long tandem bike rides with his “stoker”/wife and they have two married daughters with raucous houses full of grandchildren for whom he makes furniture and toys. A m

Send us a text This episode was great for me! I've been playing guitar since the 5th grade. It's been more of a hobby and something I have dreamt about doing professionally but it wasn't on my path. I track lots of guitarists and about 8 years ago I came across Steffen. I was blown away by his style, technical ability and composition. There was something very unique and fresh to his music. Shortly after staring Titans of Transition I made a list of people I would love to interview. Steffen was on the list but it took me months before I worked up the courage to ask him. I thought it was a long shot. After all I am quite far away he is in Denmark and I am in the USA. Also I am quite a few years his senior. He graciously accepted. Thanks Steff! As with all my episodes, I explore Steffen's career and life transitions, from his classical training on violin, cello and piano leading up to his discovery of guitar. He went all in on music and left Gymnasium (High School) to devote more time to his passion and gift-music. Unlike other interviews, I have to admit I geek out a bit with him on guitars, guitar tone and music. Through it all we had a great conversation about transitions, life, music and lessons we have learned along our respective journeys. - Joe Miller The video version is available HERE Steffen's Contact Information: Website Youtube channel Instagram Facebook Twitter Steffen Schackinger was born right in the centre of Denmark - in the capital of the island Fyn - Odense. He started out on the violin as a kid, and moved on to cello and classical piano. With the classical and electric guitar he finally found his right instrument. At the age of 13 he started out as a band guitarist, and he soon earned a reputation, as an extraordinary guitarist. Steffen completed his education as a rhythmic guitarist at The Carl Nielsen Academy of Music, and the self-released cd with the band GRACELANDS - where Steffen sang the lead vocal and played guitar - got major airplay on the Danish radio stations with the songs "Electrified", "Climbing Into Space" and "Supersonic View". Steffen has been recording countless of records as a session musician, along with being a theatre musician on several occasions. He also found himself in a bowtie playing with Symphony Orchestras as well as representing several guitar- and FX producers at guitar clinics. Steffen started out as very young composer, writing classical songs. Now he is writing pop- and roc

Send us a text Michael returns to the show to update Joe on his latest transition back to the studio to record his first album in more than 20 years. In this new work, “A View From Here”, he continues to combine his compositional and piano artistry to inform powerful scenes he has observed in nature. These Tableaus , as he calls them, can be viewed from the physical or spiritual perspectives. The later provides powerful life lessons and helps us to navigate our journey and transitions. One example of this is “Stepping Stones", that draws from his memories of trips to The Lake District in the United Kingdom with his students. In this beautiful area you can find many places where hand hewn stones have been placed in the bubbling rivers and streams to allow for a safe crossing. In some cases these stone crossing have been in place for hundreds of years. As in life, these stepping stones provide for safe passage but there are times following heavy rains where they are submerged well under water. Crossing during these times can be risky. This is a powerful metaphor for life’s journey for most of us. At times our safe path is obstructed or caries great risk and we have to find another way around. Send us a text Joe is joined by Payne Schoen, CPA and founder of Payne Schoen Consulting. Payne helps high achievers and senior leaders create environments conducive to their individual and teams success. He works with his clients in a 1-on-1 coaching relationship to raise their level of awareness by thinking deeper into their challenges, limiting beliefs, and opportunities. During the course of this interview it is clear why Payne is focused in this area. Payne shares several stories which underscore how he and we can doubt ourselves and how these doubts are based on inaccurate and habitual thinking. In our careers we can often feel like imposters and any successes we have along the we tend to discount. In his recent live coaching session with the John C. Maxwell Team Faculty on stage at the International Maxwell Certification event in Orlando, faculty member Valorie Burton stated, " Your doubts are not the product of accurate thinking, but habitual thinking". During this interview we discuss how we can come to believe that if the work we do isn't hard and we don't put in an enormous level of effort it can't be valuable. We completely discount the importance of the end results an focus on the effort or the activity itself. Another point that came out is that when we operate in the area of our natural gifting and abilities positive results come more easily. This is often a good way to determine if one is in the right role, or the best position. Operating in your natural strength is of huge importance to success in career and life. It applies in all areas. Payne and I discuss his journey playing football in high school and college which also illustrates this point powerfully. There are powerful lessons here for navigating change, enjoy! Send us a text Dean Tracy, Executive Career Coach and Recruiter joins Joe to discuss his transitions and and two of his key passions. First, helping others find their life's work, and a great job. And second, with his wife Denise running Tracy Acres Equine Sanctuary where they rescue, care for and provide their forever home. Dean and I first met at Community Presbyterian Church (CPC) in Danville, California where we both served as part of the Sunday Morning Worship Team Band. Dean redefined the Job Connections Outreach Program at CPC which is designed to assist executives in transition. Under Dean’s leadership, with more than 3,600 participants and approximately 65 volunteers, this program has grown to become one of the largest and most reputable professional groups in the Greater Bay Area. His personality and enthusiasm in leading this ministry has inspired hundreds in the midst of their career transitions. Dean and his Leadership Team were recognized by the Town of Danville with an “Award of Merit” for the great contribution that this program has had on the Local Community, and in October of 2010, Job Connections was featured on “60 Minutes with Scott Pelley.” Dean resigned his Leadership role from Job Connections in December 2012. In this episode, Dean shares many lessons but one which applies to both of his passion areas is - trust. Whether it's leading people or working with horses weighing over two thousand pounds and standing nine feet tall, gaining trust is paramount! Although you won't hear Dean talk about this much he is a "Grand-Nephew" of the late actor Spencer Tracy. http://www.deantracy.com/ https://www.tracyacres.org/about http://www.deantracy.com/ Prefer Video? https://titanspod.com/tracy-vf1 Support the show

And in my work, I like to say you are absolutely okay. The way you are, because the way you are is the way you have wound up. Due to where you've grown up, how you've been educated, your experience. There is nothing wrong with that. We cannot go ahead into the future thinking I'm not enough. I'm not good enough because what are the criteria by which you're measuring them all of that? Well, when you transform it is be able to identify what you truly bring to the team. And to understand from an emotional agility point, there are things that have served their purpose. When I cried, when my mom died four years later, that drain that bleeding heart, I felt I could release it. It served its purpose and to transform, that is what we need to realize. We need to let go of the things that have served them. Send us a text Highligh from Remote Work Interview with Bradley Eshbach: "And so, I mean, I've got this whole point of view of like, there's a reason that offices, you look at a startup office, the generic, like millennial office with a ping pong table and all the food you could ever want. And they've got a barber shop and a blowout bar and, and, you know, you'd never need to leave. Those were those became adult playgrounds, that wasn't really a need. It didn't make the work better. It was a game to compete for talent and in the same way that people had crazy stock options and good money. And so, and that was in the tech world where they had a reason to compete for talent like that. But you know that bridges over to the creative world, advertising world, the finance world, where. People see their friends working in offices like that, and you fast forward and all our offices are open floor plans based on a lot of walk and talks and, and stuff like that. But what it means is it destroys your ability to do deep work. It destroys your ability to actually get in the zone and find a flow state and create some real, real smart thinking. And the interruptions are just like tantamount, and you can't do anything about it. And so, we allow our days to just be destroyed, our ability to think deeply, completely removed, because we feel like we're getting some sort of, some sort of the magic happens at the water cooler. But I, we say that, but I don't know. I've never seen for me, the magic has never happened at the water cooler" Prefer Video? https://titanspod.com/beshbach-vh1 Support the show

Yes, we will do this. So I guess the lesson there is sometimes something presents itself and again, that great adventure of life, you just got to grab a hold of it! Yeah. It's there. it's not there forever. It's there for a moment of time and with all the wisdom that you can muster, you make a decision, you grab a hold of it and you go with it. As her graduation from college neared what seemed like a perfect degree, Philosophy, she realized probably wasn’t the best choice to provide for herself and future family. There she met her future husband who was a US Diplomat. After their marriage they left the country for his first post, Tunis, Tunisia. Future moves would take them to seven more countries through the Middle East and Asia. She now resides in Tokyo, Japan. Send us a text Episode #14 Summary Many of the guests I have interviewed to discuss their transitions have recalled key moments, or events during their lives which provided powerful lessons which can help guide us in making key decisions in life. Planning vs. Doing, it's an age old debate. We don't want to get stuck in paralysis by analysis but at the same time we don't want to shoot from the hip and ignore all the risks either. George and I enjoyed re-living our Mt. Princeton climb which we completed, somehow, against all odds. We shared lots of laughs (at ourselves), as well as lessons we learned through the experience. This climb adventure was certainly not on the planning side of the debate. Yet, at the same time being spontaneous can bring us to accomplishing things we never would have otherwise. I had a mantra with my friends, it was probably too vulgar to repeat about the comfort zone. You just got to kick it to the curb. Nothing really great happens out of resting on your laurels. Great things happen when you push yourself and you have to push it. That is a transition. So I think it's a wonderful, your podcast is a wonderful platform for this because I think it fits into something I think that's important is you're going to have to bite the bullet and and eat that bitter pill of a transition to get out of that comfort zone. But that's going to bring you that vulnerability. You're going to grow from that personally, which ultimately, we want to focus on our careers but don't forget this is all about personal development. Who are we becoming? We're always becoming somebody. You're not just this one static rock. It's like a rivers through time. There are all these changes." Support the show
