42 - Overcoming Trauma Together with Scott McPherson Scott McPherson shares his experience as a firefighter EMT and Army infantry officer and discusses the importance of addressing the soul wounds of first responders. He explains that soul wounds are perceived or actual actions that transgress deeply held moral values, and they can result from critical incidents with unfavorable outcomes, betrayal, or failure to meet performance standards. Scott emphasizes the need for open and honest conversations about these experiences and the importance of community support in the healing process. He also discusses the Reboot Recovery program, which combines the science of trauma recovery with scripturally based conversations to help first responders and their spouses find healing. Key Takeaways Soul wounds are perceived or actual actions that transgress deeply held moral values and can result in significant emotional and psychological impact on first responders. Open and honest conversations about these experiences are crucial for healing and recovery. Community support and connection play a vital role in the healing process for first responders and their spouses. The Reboot Recovery program combines the science of trauma recovery with scripturally based conversations to provide a comprehensive approach to healing for first responders and their spouses. ABOUT REBOOT RECOVERY REBOOT is a national movement of peer-led, faith-based trauma recovery courses with over 400 locations across the US and 11 countries and over 23,000 graduates. REBOOT courses combine the science of trauma recovery with Scripturally based conversations to address the faith questions that trauma exposure often catalyzes. Our First Responder REBOOT curriculum ( https://rebootrecovery.com/responders/ ), came from a program that was developed for US combat veterans and their spouses to help address both the post-traumatic stress injuries and the 'soul wounds' associated with their service experiences. Recognizing that critical incident stress, compassion fatigue and moral injury events also impact first responders and their spouses, we translated the course into their culture and language in 2018. Since then, we have found the course meets the needs of responders (law enforcement, fire service, EMS, emergency communicators and corrections personnel) and their spouses in ways many other traditional post-traumatic stress approaches do not. This is our answer to the epidemic of first responder mental health challenges. Spouses are invited to participate to help rebuild lines of communication and understanding that so often break down, as well as to process their own secondary trauma. The course meets over 12 weeks, with each week taking on a topic common to the first responder experience, such as forgiveness of self and oth

41 - Healing Invisible Wounds with Russ Hanes What do you do when you’re a first responder and you're struggling and making bad decisions at work and you realize this is not working out for you? That’s where Russ Hanes was at after 17 years of working in law enforcement, corrections, and 911 dispatch. Fortunately for Russ, he was finally able eventually get his life together but it meant leaving the job he loved. But he still wanted to help people. So, he launched the Invisible Wounds Project, a non-profit that helps improve the lives and mental health of veterans, first responders and their families. Today we’ll hear a little about his story and about an innovative new initiative his nonprofit is launching this month! Stay tuned for his story. ABOUT OUR GUEST Russ Hanes is the Founder and Executive Director of the Invisible Wounds Project (IWP) a Minnesota-based nonprofit whose mission is to positively impact and enhance the lives of those who serve(d). IWP provides access to qualified therapy services, and other support services for military, police, fire, EMS, frontline medical staff, corrections, 911 dispatch, and their families related to PTSD, mental health and suicide issues. Russ spent 17 years working in the public safety field as a police officer, corrections officer, and 911 dispatcher. In 2016, Russ left public safety after silently battling PTSD. Since 2009 Russ has been involved in fundraising for veteran, and first responder causes. It was in 2016 as he battled his own inner demons, and after being told that he "didn't qualify for help" because he wasn't a veteran, that the Invisible Wounds Project was born. Russ recognized that many of his friends and colleagues were suffering from PTSD and cumulative stress but had nowhere to turn. The Invisible Wounds Project which has annually served hundreds of individuals and families, just recently began construction of its IWP Support Center, which is a day-use therapeutic space meant to provide those they serve a place to go for connection and services. The IWP Support Center has a community lounge with recreation activities and a coffee bar. It also has a multi-use meeting and training space, a woodworking shop, art studio, offices, and more. With this facility, IWP can provide daily therapeutic activities, connection opportunities, mentoring, education, retreats, and much more. 40 - We are what we eat with Megan Lautz Today on the First Responder Wellness podcast I have a conversation with a nutritionist who talks about how our diet impacts our mental health, and really everything else about us. My guest is Megan Lautz. She is a Registered Dietitian and Personal Trainer on a mission to help first responders optimize performance, recover faster, and enjoy long, healthy retirements. In this episode we dive into all things nutrition. What you should eat, fad diets, and all the things that you’ve probably heard about but have been ignoring… So come along for this inspiring conversation. ABOUT OUR GUEST... Megan is a civilian Registered Dietitian and Personal Trainer on a mission to help first responders optimize performance, recover faster, and enjoy long, healthy retirements. My background in wellness and graphic design has allowed me to lead engaging health campaigns for first responders. First responders face unique challenges when it comes to health. These challenges have inspired me to create targeted, realistic solutions throughout the lifecycle of a first responder's career. Megan thrives on translating complicated health information into manageable lifestyle changes that fit into an unpredictable shift. Her interest in a first responder's lifestyle has contributed to her success with CPAT participants, recruits, incumbents, and leadership. Megan's health coaching participants have lost an average of 14 pounds, up to 8% body fat, and up to a 30-point reduction in cholesterol. She has created a recruit nutrition curriculum that has effectively eliminated rhabdomyolysis and hydration-related injury in the past five recruit classes. Megan believes in a “boots on the ground” approach to wellness. She has trained for and passed CPAT, and am always up for a ride-along or a fitness challenge. Megan can often be found at a station or academy teaching nutrition, fitness, mobility, or just hanging out to learn more about firefighters. Megan is currently working full time with Fairfax County Fire and Rescue in Virginia and provides freelance counseling, presentations, and is always interested in a challenge. He's the founder of the #IAM911 movement and the host of the Dare to be Great virtual events for 911 professionals, plus he loves to play in puddles with his kids. He's my guest today on the podcast... ABOUT THE GUEST Ricardo Martinez II is a creative individual who is using his skills in writing, design, and podcasting to tell the stories of those he works with. For 13 years he has answered the call of a 9-1-1 dispatcher and recently accepted a new position with INdigital telecom as a 9-1-1 systems trainer and designer. Throughout his years in dispatch he was able to go to school where he received an Associate’s in web development through Baker College, a Bachelor’s in graphic design through Full Sail University as well as a Master’s in new media journalism in March of 2013. Before starting his Master’s program he launched Jabber Log, a blog about current events and his life stories. His personal blog posts became a hit with his audience and one such post even appeared on WordPress.com’s “Freshly Pressed” section on their main page. From there his blog opened doors that included promotions for businesses, artists and musicians. Once he started his Master’s program he began doing multimedia stories that can be found on his YouTube channel. Through this program he discovered podcasting. It spawned a series that tells the stories of those in the field of emergency services. He then created a podcast version of a segment on his blog called Within the Trenches, a section of writing based on his experience as a 9-1-1 dispatcher. He launched Kickstarter campaign to raise $1,500 for the equipment needed for a show that would feature the stories of 9-1-1 dispatchers. The campaign was funded and can now be found at www.thejabberlog.com. His goal is to tell the story of everyone he meets. “I believe that everyone has a story to tell. 31- What Makes a Good Officer go Bad? with Marlon Marrache Why do some good cops go bad? What are the circumstances that cause this to happen? And how do these situations get prosecuted, and do agencies ever get it wrong? Tune in for my conversation with Marlon Marrache today on the First Responder Wellness Podcast and you'll hear answers to these questions a lot more. ABOUT MARLON MARRACHE Sergeant Marlon Marrache recently retired from the Los Angeles Police Department after 24 years of service. He now is focused full time on helping agencies and individual officers understand the internal affair process. According to Marlon, “There is so much more work to be done. We need to teach Supervisors how to investigate IA complaints. We need to teach officers their rights.” He is a co-instructor for our Internal Affairs/Officer-Involved Shooting Investigations course with the Savage Training Group. Marlon’s 24 years at LAPD included 12 years of Police Misconduct Investigation, adjudication, and examination experience. Much of his experience comes from when Marlon was assigned to Internal Affairs (IA) in a prosecutorial role, representing the Chief of Police conducting Board of Rights, a unique Tribunal Hearing (the only agency with such a process in the nation). The numerous cases he tried involved “False & Misleading” allegations and termination was at issue. Marlon’s passion for discipline came early in his career when he was preparing cases for Court Marshals & Non-Judiciary Punishment (aka: Captain’s Mast) when he was in active duty in the U.S. Navy back in 1995. After joining the LAPD in July 1998, working as a patrol officer, then promoted to Sergeant in January 2007, his passion was reenergized when he was chosen to work ORS and IA. Marlon possesses a Juris Doctorate from Pacific Coast University, School of Law and was going to become a full time Police Attorney until he was offered this recent promotion. Meanwhile, Marlon has been retained as a Subject Matter Expert and will continue to share his knowledge with students everything there is to know about IA investigations which he considers a very untapped subject matter. In 2023, Marlon launched a podcast called Internal Affairs: A Police Podcast . Marlon interviews officers who have been on all sides of an I.A., from investigators to the subject officers themselves. This podcast is the only place you can get a behind the scenes look into what really happened in some well known cases. 23-All in on helping first responders. With Darren Purcell Some first responders go their entire career and don’t realize how the job is impacting them. That's what happened with Darren Purcell. About nine months into his retirement, after 35 years of being a fire fighter and paramedic, the trauma of the job caught up with him. But Darren got help. Darren has turned his recovery into a personal mission to help as many first responders as he can. In 2023, with the help of his church, he launched a first responder support group. In fact he and his wife both help lead support groups at Saddleback Church. Darren’s wife, Jody helps lead the First Responder spouse support group. Listen to his inspiring story. ABOUT DARREN PURCELL Darren served the Orange County Fire Authority for 35 years as a firefighter, paramedic, and captain. He worked all the busy stations and also involved in training, mentoring and helping young aspiring fire fighters. He never thought about PTSD while doing the job. First Responders Wellness at Saddleback Church This support group is like no other. This is a place for first responders and first responders only. We share a common bond and experience things in our work that are unique to our profession. The things we see affect every person differently. Some of us have no issues at all and some have major issues. The hours we work, the lack of sleep, and the different types of people we encounter all have effects on our well-being and if not addressed properly can come out in a variety of ways. Every single person has a different story and a different way this affects them, but we all get it. This is a place to share, listen, learn, and have a space to transform our behavior. It’s not impossible alone, but it’s not the best way to get better. It’s a fact that more first responders die from suicide each year than on duty. This is a place not only to get the help you need, but we will teach you how to take this hurt and use it to help others. This support group meets in-person the first Tuesday of every month at the Saddleback Lake Forest campus and meets online the third Tuesday of every month. https://saddleback.com/connect/ministry/first-responders-wellness/lake-forest? 22-Are you losing your religion? - Jeremy Wade How do you reconcile your faith - whether you consider yourself a Christian or otherwise - and being a first responder? You’ve seen the darkest side of humanity, and have experienced loss within your own ranks with those who have given up hope. That’s the very thing that Jeremy Wade struggled with while he was an officer with the Seattle police department. Today on the podcast Jeremy talks about this struggle and how he was able to overcome this dichotomy. In his years at Seattle PD Jeremy helped launch a wellness program and in his last few years there he was the executive director of the Seattle Police Chaplains Association. Today, Jeremy and his Wife Ketryna have launched a national first responder ministry called Mission First Alliance who’s mission is to encouraging ministries and engage the Church to equip our nation’s first responders and their families to live in Christ and on Mission. ABOUT JEREMY WADE Jeremy served for the Seattle Police Department for 13 years, but struggled with his identity in Christ vs his identity in the badge early in his career. After a few years on the department he fully surrendered his life to the Lord, which started an amazing journey that the Lord has been blessing along the way. While not free from challenges like the Seattle riots, and many critical incidents, Jeremy could see God’s hand in directing his paths. On the Seattle PD, Jeremy was awarded Officer of the Year, and Medal of Valor. He worked in patrol, in the training unit, as a peer support coordinator, and assisted in developing the department’s first wellness unit. He co-founded the SPD Beds for Kids Program with Ryan Gallagher, that continues on today. Jeremy also served as the executive director of the Seattle Police Chaplains Association, and came alongside many other local and national first responder ministries. In 2021, Jeremy, his wife Ketryna, and four kids, felt God calling them to move to Tennessee and step out in faith to do full time ministry, supporting first responders nationwide. This led to serving as the Training & Development Coordinator for the Fellowship of Christian Peace Officers- USA, until God started directing his path, and opening doors to start Mission First Alliance. CONNECT WITH JEREMY Mission First Alliance is building a gospel focused first responder alliance. We are uniting and equipping all who have a heart to reach our nation's first responders and their families for Christ. Together we can have a greater Kingdom impact. www.MissionFirstAlliance.com -Membership Application for Mission First Alliance attached. Membership is free. Lesson's from One Critical Incident Learn how a critical incident in 1991 shaped Mike Ming's career as a fire fighter. What does it take to create a wellness program for 8,000+ employees? That's what Mike Ming was tasked to do a few years ago for Cal Fire, the agency where he spent most of his fire fighting career. Take a listen to my conversation with Mike on how he and his team developed a program that includes preparing new fire fighters at the academy for the traumas of the job. ABOUT MIKE MING Mike started his fire service career as a volunteer in hometown of Forestville, CA in 1991. He worked as seasonal firefighter (CDF then, CAL FIRE) from 1994 until 1998 and went full time in 1998. In 2000 he became a permanent employee where he worked operationally in All-Hazard response (wildland, structural, medical, hazmat, aviation, etc.) until 2014. In 2014 Mike was promoted to Battalion Chief in the Employee Support Services program (ESS) and in 2018 promoted to Deputy Chief program manager of ESS. As the Deputy Chief wrote a Budget Change Proposal (BCP) and submitted to legislature for approval and sought permanent funding and more positions. The proposal was successful and he grew the staff from 5 positions to 27 with a permanently funded budget. In 2020 Mike was promoted to Staff Chief program manager of the newly branded BHWP. Mike retired January of 2023, and he makes an appearance in the PTSD911 documentary. (Although you're not likely to recognize him.) Mike lives in Sonoma County, CA with his partner Sequoia. They have 2 adult daughters. Mike and Sequoia love the wilderness, surfing, primitive survival skills, great food and traveling to new places. +++++ FIRST RESPONDER WELLNESS PODCAST/PTSD911 MOVIE Web site: https://ptsd911movie.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ptsd911movie/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ptsd911movie/ Purchase the PTSD911 film for your public safety agency or organization: https://ptsd911.myshopify.com/products/ptsd911-digital-toolkit-pre-orders-only The First Responder Wellness Podcast is a production of ConjoStudios, LLC Copyright ©2023 ConjoStudios, LLC All rights reserved.

Healthy Relationships at Home = Healthier Work Life with JD & Shelli Schulgen The national divorce rate for married couples has been at 50% for a while. For first responders its much higher, as much as 75 percent. That’s a staggering statistic. 8 out of ten first responders you work with are likely to be in a divorce. How can that change. Well the couple I have on the show today is working on that. JD & Shelli Schulgen have been married for almost 43 years! JD is a station Captain with the Garland Fire Department with 39 years of service. Shelli is a full-time farm wife running a small beef cattle operation outside of Dallas Texas. JD & Shelli present a Fire Fighter Family Orientation for new recruits to give them some tools to cope with the stress of fire service life. They are pouring themselves into the married couples of the Garland fire department and making a difference. What are their secrets, and how have they lasted for 43 years? Today we’ll find out. Surviving Grief with Lisa Zoll. How do first responders deal with death? They face it almost daily, and yet have to continue on their work. In this episode Conrad talks with Lisa Zoll who is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker specializing in helping clients challenged by loss, grief, and trauma. WARNING: THIS EPISODE CONTAINS FRANK TALK ABOUT DEATH AND SUICIDE. Her experience as a volunteer firefighter and EMT at Camp Hill Fire Department, Company 14 led her to become a trainer and volunteer for the Keystone Crisis Intervention Team (KCIT) and to join with On the Job and Off's First Responder Assistance Program to provide mental health services to first responders. Lisa believes that when grievers tell their stories, they are often struggling to make sense of the event. Grievers, telling and retelling their stories, are an integral part of the grieving process. She has developed an approach for how we look at the journey of grief that removed the stages, expectations, time frames, and banishes the word closure. The approach is more about weaving your loss into your life and honoring your journey instead of treating it like a problem to be solved. Lisa graduated with her MSW from Temple University, Harrisburg in 2003. Lisa’s experience includes 12 years as a Clinical Psychiatric Specialist at the Penn State University Medical Center in Hershey, Pennsylvania, working in the Adult Partial Hospitalization Program and Psychiatric Outpatient Clinic. In 2008, Lisa began teaching Loss & Grief as an Adjunct Instructor in the Master of Social Work at Temple University, Harrisburg. In 2014 she was appointed as a full-time faculty instructor where she taught courses across the curriculum until the closure of the program. Lisa founded “Grief Relief, LLC” in 2019 and specializes in helping clients challenged by loss, grief, and trauma. She has published several articles and has spoken on the local, state, and national level about loss and grief and how they can impact individuals, families, communities, and organizations. Yoga Rescue with Vance Row Within 30 days of his first studio class, he knew he wanted to teach cops, firefighters, correctional officers, dispatchers and first responders. Guest: Vance Row, Yoga Teacher/ Police- Fire Dispatcher/ Former Police Corporal BIO: Vance first found yoga after a number of back injuries in 2008 and 2009. During physical therapy, he would use yoga as a change of pace type workout. When Vance did, he always did so at home where he could struggle with difficult poses and try to follow along with what he saw on the screen. Vance says that he always had anxiety about entering a yoga studio because he felt like he wasn’t good enough to practice with other attendees. That changed in November 2019 when Vance signed for and attended a class in Fenwick Island, DE. Vance quickly discovered that yoga practice is a powerful community of connection and challenges. Through his regular practice, Vance has found an incredible amount of physical and mental benefits including making him a far calmer person. At the time, Vance was struggling with his own mental health issues which included a toxic work environment, career ending injury, and poor coping mechanisms like abusing alcohol. Prior to becoming a Yoga Teacher, Vance was a Police Officer for more than twenty years and worked for both Ocean City, MD Police and Salisbury, MD Police during his Law Enforcement career. After seeing the physical and mental benefits yoga provided for Vance, he decided that he wanted to teach yoga to other First Responders/ Public Safety Professionals. Vance completed his 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training thru Yoga- Vibez in Ocean City, MD in March 2021. Throughout his training, Vance was mentored in the Hatha Yoga tradition by Tana Martin (RYT-500). Since that time, he has also completed Warriors at Ease Training, Aerial Yoga Teacher Training and most recently Veterans Yoga Project Mindful Resilience. Vance blends a practice mixed with breath, movement, and mindfulness for an overall feeling of well being. During these sessions students can expect to move, stretch, work of alignment, build strength, and nurture flexibility. He believes that the practice of Yoga is really for anyone and makes his classes fun and accessible to ANY level. Ultimately, his story shows the power of yoga in resilience and why Vance wants to use yoga to combat First Responder/ Military Suicide. Vance founded “Yoga Rescue” as a way to do so. About Nick: Nick Daugherty began his career with the Grand Prairie Police Department (GPPD) in 2003 serving as a patrol officer, school resource officer, and underage alcohol and drug task force officer. In 2012 he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant where he served as a patrol sergeant, field training supervisor, fleet coordinator, and criminal intelligence unit sergeant. Additionally, Nick holds a Master Peace Officer certification and a TCOLE instructor’s certificate. He semi-retired in August of 2017 and continues to serve as a reserve officer for GPPD. During his career he was awarded numerous honors and commendations, including a lifesaving award, as well as being named officer of the month 4 times, Jim Thorne Officer of the year 2 times, and the Sergeant Gregory Hunter supervisor of the year award. At a young age Nick did a lot of irresponsible things with money partaking in “stupid tax” purchases (the art of buying toys that you can’t afford using plastic). Before he knew it, he had accumulated over $80,000 in consumer debt, most of which was wrapped up in car stereo equipment, cars, and just plain ole stuff. He was tired! Tired of being in debt, and tired from being stuck in the overtime cycle just to keep afloat! He quickly realized that he needed to educate himself on personal finances and work to get out of the hole he dug himself into. He was introduced to the Dave Ramsey show and became an avid listener, supporter, and believer of the Total Money Makeover Program’s 7 Baby Steps to financial freedom. He worked over a thousand hours of overtime, and sold a bunch of stuff, to be able to scream out to the world “I’m debt free” on March 7th , 2007! A graduate, and coordinator, of Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University, he is also a certified Ramsey Solutions master trained financial coach* and has coached hundreds of first responders through financial crisis. In 2012 he created a revolutionary financial wellness class for GPPD, “Building Financial Strength in First Responder Families” that has been taught to over 10,000 first responders nationally. Nick is also the president, and owner of FinancialCop LLC, a full-service financial firm for first responders, run by first responders as well as being a licensed life insurance agent. Additionally, he has completed classes through Ken Zahn’s Certified Financial Planning professional education program. Nick also serves in various volunteer capacities nationally including the nonprofit www.serveprotect.org as an “A-Team” member as a financial wellness coordinator and crisis coach along with serving on the Texas Police Chief Association Of

Courageously Broken - DA Michaels tells her story Host: Conrad Weaver Guest: D.A. Michaels ABOUT D.A. MICHAELS Donna Michaels has had a distinguished career which began by serving in the U.S. Navy and followed by 21 years in law enforcement which she is now retired from. She is a proud mom of a teenage daughter and enjoys her time with their three hysterically funny dogs. After being diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in 2017, she began a journey to find answers to questions she had struggled with for years. In the course of doing so, she started to journal and before she knew it, she had written a book. Her discoveries not only allowed her to find the answers she was seeking, but in choosing to share her story she realized she could help others as well. She credits the strength of her “Never Quit” mentality to the three years she spent working alongside the Navy SEALs. There she established enduring friendships that would eventually save her life. Donna spent much of the past two decades in law enforcement helping others in crisis, from various mental health problems. She is a Crisis Intervention Officer, Critical Incident Stress Management member and is all too familiar with how traumatic events can affect anyone. Even the bravest and strongest among us. In an effort to erase the stigma of PTSD, Donna hopes to not only encourage those to get help who battle their own invisible wounds, but also help the general public gain a better understanding of PTSD and not to fear those who have it. Tom Morris, Jr. has had a distinguished career in television working for America’s Most Wanted in the early 90s and becoming the show’s Senior Correspondent and most trusted face of the show behind iconic host John Walsh where he worked on many high-profile, headline-grabbing cases. He was contentedly working as a government analyst in the fall of 2016 with his television career in the rear view mirror when producers for A&E’s fledgling reality police show LIVE PD summoned him to New York for an audition six weeks into the show’s run. Tom Morris Jr. joined the show with host Dan Abrams on the 9th episode and is widely credited by network executives and fans (whom he dubbed THE LIVE PD NATION) as contributing greatly to the runaway success LPD would enjoy for 298 episodes becoming the most watched show on all of cable television for four consecutive seasons. In Tom’s second week on the show viewership jumped from 600,000 to one million. By the summer of 2017 viewership topped 2 million for three live hours on both Friday and Saturday nights. The in-studio team of Dan Abrams, Tom Morris Jr. and Sgt. Sean “Sticks” Larkin became must see for millions of devoted fans every weekend. Still passionate about using his broadcasting abilities to affect tangible change, Tom convinced A&E executives to allow him to profile wanted fugitives and missing children during each episode of Live PD. Those segments have resulted in more that 30 fugitives being captured with the help of the Live PD Nation and over a dozen missing children being reunited with their loved ones. In the fall of 2019 A&E made Tom the host of his own show broadening his on-air crime fighting work with LIVE PD WANTED which has gone on to also become a ratings and crime solving success. ABOUT ALISHA I specialize in treating trauma, teens, and anxiety. I also have extensive experience working with couples, depression, and grief and loss. I absolutely love working with first responders, military, and their loved ones. I believe that counseling is most effective when tailored to the specific experiences you have. This approach helps you by exploring symptoms as helpful tools to increase your own personal awareness. Through counseling, you will be able to learn more about your own experiences in a safe and non-judgmental environment. It is in this environment that you can find meaning with your experiences in order to reach your fullest potential. For those who believe, I also incorporate Christian counseling practices and biblical understanding in sessions. Watch the original video recordings of these interviews here.
