Hello, my name is Marieke Hardy and I’m Going To Die. But that’s ok, because so are you. And so is everybody you know, including - and trust me, I’m as conflicted about this as you are - your dog. It’s confronting, especially in the brutal world we’re all doing our best to survive, but I believe there’s something important about this universal experience we’re all having together that worth interrogating. Join me as I speak to a variety of interesting, beautiful, imperfect humans (who are definitely going to die) and help them plan their dre...

LIVE AT THE WHEELER CENTRE: BEN SHEWRY IS GOING TO DIE Recorded live as part of The Wheeler Centre's Spring Fling program , this conversation features renowned Chef and memoirist Ben Shewry as he unpacks a lot more than the food and bev service at his Dream Funeral. Ben was born in New Zealand in 1977 and moved to Melbourne in 2002. He worked with chefs David Thompson and Andrew McConnell before taking on his first head chef role at Attica in 2005. Originally obsessed with the detail and balance of Thai food, Ben began to develop a style at Attica that reflected his rural New Zealand upbringing and, increasingly, a fascination with Australian indigenous ingredients. Ben is a passionate, sensitive, reflective human being whose vulnerabilities and openness about life (and death) make him an ideal candidate for a deep dive into mortality. PHIL JAMIESON IS GOING TO DIE Phil Jamieson has spent the last quarter-century fronting one of Australia’s most popular and successful bands. An accomplished singer, songwriter and guitarist, Jamieson’s generation-defining lyrics and vocal melodies first became etched into rock fans’ DNA in 1995, when the Lismore-born quartet he helped form as an 18-year-old - Grinspoon - rode a new wave of alternative music to become the first act Unearthed by national youth radio station triple j with its debut single “Sickfest”. So began a love affair that maintained its heat and passion for over one thousand live shows, six consecutive Top 10 debuts and multi-platinum album sales. Phil's also had tackled some incredibly public challenges - including an infamous battle with addiction and an ensuing media frenzy that saw him in deep confessional mode on Andrew Denton's Enough Rope in 2007. It's perhaps these experiences which have made him more reflective than others when it comes to thinking about death and mortality...though when it comes to planning his dream Funeral, Phil's ready to get the party started. Jamieson’s live performance talents have continued to diversify and develop as he has explored new stages and formats. Embracing a solo career, Jamieson also made the transition from live music venues to the boards of theatres around the country in 2017, being cast as St. Jimmy in the Australian stage production of American Idiot . The Broadway musical made an impactful debut with its initial Australian premiere in Brisbane, leading to a national tour in 2018 - a performance that earned Jamieson acclaim: “Phil Jamieson carried the role in Perth, and absolutely nailed it. Jamieson has more of a swagger than an in-your-face psychopathic Jimmy, which I enjoyed more than I expected...whenever Jimmy is on stage, it’s difficult to focus on anything else.” - SYN MEDIA Jamieson has also been involved in several philanthropic and industry-specific initiatives. Instagram: @PhilJamieson Facebook: PhilJamiesonMusic As well as spending time in the studio, writing his next solo album, Phil is currently working on the release of Grinspoon’s 8th studio album, first new music in 12 years: ‘whatever, whatever’ released August 9 Also touring Nationally with Grinspoon from September 17 - December 6 on a 45 date album tour. BEN LEE IS GOING TO DIE Ben Lee began his career as a young teenager in the early 90’s, in the Australian lo-fi punk band Noise Addict, who were discovered by taste-making artists Sonic Youth and the Beastie Boys. That began an extraordinary career that has been both eclectic and eccentric, and still growing more strange and fascinating each day. Whether collaborating in one-off projects like the Bens (with Ben Folds and Ben Kweller), producing a Grammy award winning music/comedy album for Margaret Cho (“Cho Dependent”), duetting with Sarah Silverman, writing a psychedelic children’s musical with American literary legend Tom Robbins, or simply strumming away on his guitar and putting out over 20 solo albums of songs that have made romantics swoon for multiple generations, Ben’s career is always (to quote his song “Ache 4 You”) “confusing...but never dull”. As a curious explorer of religion and philosophy, Ben has cultivated a comfortable relationship with mortality - and his experiences as a death midwife have only deepened his understanding of a journey through lived existence. What better person to plan a dream Funeral with? Now, collaborating with his wife, actress Ione Skye, on their company Weirder Together, Lee is supporting other artists in creating bizarre and beautiful content spanning everything from podcasts and music, to events and fanzines, as well as film projects. TARA MOSS IS GOING TO DIE Tara Rae Moss is a force and a shape-shifter. She is the bestselling author of 14 books of fiction and non-fiction, an experienced keynote speaker and documentary host, an award-winning advocate, holistic healer, funeral celebrant and practicing seiðkona. Since 1999 she has written fourteen bestselling books under the name Tara Moss, published in 19 countries and 13 languages, including advocacy handbook for women and girls Speaking Out, her #1 non-fiction bestselling memoir The Fictional Woman, and the internationally bestselling postwar historical crime novels The War Widow and The Ghosts of Paris. Tara Rae is an outspoken advocate for human rights and the rights of women and children, and has been a UNICEF Australia goodwill ambassador since 2007. In 2014 she was recognised for outstanding advocacy for her blog Manus Island: An Insider’s Report, which helped to break information to the public about the alleged murder of Reza Barati. Against all odds, Tara Rae is now in remission for Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) – a rare disease she lived with for nearly eight years, marked by constant burning pain that rates on the McGill Pain Scale as more painful than childbirth or amputation of a digit. Despite being told by multiple doctors that she would never recover, she was able to get her condition into complete remission in 2023 after years of debilitating pain that impacted all aspects of her being, including her mobility, causing her to require a wheelchair. With her gothic sensibilities Tara Rae has always been fascinated by the creative aspects of mortality - so it make sense that she’s planned her dream Funeral with fine and brilliant detail. ANDY GRIFFITHS IS GOING TO DIE Andy Griffiths is one of Australia’s most popular children’s authors. He has written forty books—many in collaboration with illustrator Terry Denton—which have sold over 12 million copies in Australia, won 90 children’s choice awards and 10 Australian Book Industry Awards—including Book of the Year for The 52-Storey Treehouse in 2015. His much loved Treehouse series has been embraced by children around the world and is published in more than 35 countries. The thirteenth—and final book in the series—was published in 2023. So what does one of the nation's most beloved and playful imaginations have to say about his own demise - and perhaps, the soundtrack that may accompany it? Andy is currently working on a new series called Adventures Unlimited in collaboration with illustrator Bill Hope. The first book, 'The Land of Lost Things', will be published in August 2024 and—in response to many children’s requests to be included in the books—will feature the reader as one of the main characters (along with Andy) as they take a unpredictably silly adventure featuring the playful mix of left-of-centre comedy, fantasy, adventure and lavish illustrations that generations of his young readers—and their parents—have come to love so much. Andy is a passionate advocate for literacy and in 2015 was awarded the Dromkeen Medal to honour his outstanding contribution to Australian children’s literature. LA PETITE MORT: DAVID PARIS IS GOING TO DIE As someone who has worked within political parties, unions and non-government organisations on social and environmental issues for the past 20 years, David Paris has been no stranger to the occasional brutality of public and private life. But when his health began deteriorating, he found himself facing an ongoing battle with chronic pain and fatigue - as well as feeling the slow and significant peeling away of a social circle unable to comprehend his at times invisible battle. In darker moments, David has sought solace in those also delicately balancing across the see-saw of constant pain management - understanding that thoughts of death can be simultaneously confronting and comforting, and it's something we shouldn't be afraid to talk about. LA PETITE MORT: ANDREA GOLDSMITH IS GOING TO DIE Writers obsessed with the themes of death and mortality often find comfort in the words of fellow artists interrogating same. What is it that they're seeking in the musings of those who turn to face the Reaper? What does it tell them not only about their own creative practice, but life itself? Andrea Goldsmith is an award-winning novelist and occasional essayist. Death has featured in most of her 9 novels; indeed, in the forthcoming, The Buried Life, the main character is a sociologist of death. Her fascination with death may be nothing more than her flexing muscles at the Grim Reaper, though she insists that it’s the mystery of death and the fear that it commonly inspires that attracts her - as well as the poetry and the two thousand plus requiems. BEN QUILTY IS GOING TO DIE Australian artist Ben Quilty has always been an outspoken human - passionate about art, social justice, and the general messy business of Being Human. But as someone who has had a front-row seat to death and mortality - not just through his work, but also through his activism - how does he feel about planning his own Funeral? What does he wish he'd said and refrained from saying? This is an earnest Dream Funeral from one of the country's most reflective and creative minds. Ben Quilty is a contemporary Australian artist whose thickly painted landscapes and portraits have garnered international acclaim. Working in a style that remains both highly expressive and naturalistic, Quilty aims to delve into the emotional qualities of places and people through his gestural application of paint. Though remains distinctive in Quilty’s vivid use of spectral color. Quilty studied at Sydney College of the Arts and the University of Western Sydney. In 2011, he notably worked as an official war artist for the Australian Defense force stationed in Afghanistan, where he depicted the daily life and struggles of the soldiers through quickly executed sketches and paintings. Quilty’s works are in the collections of the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney, the National Gallery of Art in Canberra, and the University of Queensland Art Museum in Brisbane, among others. LA PETITE MORT: MALIA DEWSE IS GOING TO DIE Why do so many of us resist writing a will until it's too late? Holistic end-of-life planning is more than formal documents (will and advanced care plan). It reflects our values, interests and the breadth of our lives: emotional housekeeping, end-of-life, our legacy and more. It needs doing before it’s really needed. A long-held interest in death and dying, as well as both positive and challenging personal experiences with loved ones’ dying and death, drove Malia Dewse to establish Beyond the Will. The service provides a holistic planning approach to the end-of-life. It supports individuals and families to plan before they really need to and identify and prioritise the things that really matter to them. Malia currently lives and works in Merri-bek with her family and a demanding cat. She loves to cook, eat, garden and plant trees as well as connect with friends and community. TONY BIRCH IS GOING TO DIE The brilliant writer and academic Dr Tony Birch was born in inner-city Melbourne, into a large family of Aboriginal, West Indian and Irish descent. An altar boy and exceptional student at his local Catholic primary school, in adolescence, Birch went 'off the rails' as a teenager. He was expelled from two high schools for fighting and found trouble with the police for the same reason. Although somewhat adrift following his expulsions, he remained a voracious reader – once, when he was arrested by police, all they found when they patted him down was a copy of Camus’ The Outsider , which remains his favourite book. Birch has written a great deal about death and grief, most recently in his 2021 short story collection Dark As Last Night, where he interrogates the death of his brother Wayne. Here, he reads from the collection whilst musing on his own legacy and eventual funeral plans. Birch has been publishing short stories and poetry regularly since the 1980s, although his first collection, Shadowboxing , only appeared in 2006. Since this, he has published four more collections of short stories and poetry ( Father's Day [2009], The Promise [2014], Broken Teeth [2016], and Common People [2017] and two novels ( Blood [2011] and Ghost River [2015]). Among his awards are the Scanlon Prize and the Prize for Indigenous Writing (Victorian Premier's Literary Awards). He has also been shortlisted for the Christina Stead Prize for Fiction (NSW Premier's Literary Awards), the Steele Rudd Award (with both the original Queensland Premier's Literary Awards and the later Queensland Literary Awards), and the Miles Franklin Literary Award. In 2015, he joined Victoria University as the first recipient of its Dr Bruce McGuinness Indigenous Research Fellowship. His role sits within the Moondani Balluk Academic Unit and is linked to the University’s creative arts and writing programs. He has also taught creative writing at the University of Melbourne for many years. In 2022, he was appointed as the third Boisbouvier Chair in Australian Literature at the University of Melbourne, following Richard Flanagan and Alexis Wright. CELEBRATING MIKE NOGA In these special episodes, we celebrate the life of a person who has died via someone who loved them deeply - keeping the memory of them alive through shared recollections, joy and grief. These conversations can be intensely raw, and many tears are shed. Please move gently as you listen. TW: Substance abuse, mental health, suicide. Mike Noga was a singer/songwriter and former drummer of the alt-rock band The Drones - who won the inaugural Australian Music Prize in 2005 for their album Wait Long by the River and the Bodies of Your Enemies Will Float By. Mike also built a name for himself in the Australian music industry with four critically acclaimed solo albums - Folk Songs (2005), The Balladeer Hunter (2012), KING (2016) and the posthumous Open Fire (2021) which was nominated for the Best Independent Rock Album in the 2022 AIR Awards and one of the best albums of 2022 by NME. He toured extensively both in Australia and overseas during his career, opening for acts such as Spoon, Band of Horses, Mark Lanegan and LOW. Celebrating him with us is his beautiful sister Ali Noga - a ceramic artist based in nipaluna/Hobart. Her work reveals itself as a quest for meaning and connection in a world that often feels disconnected and occasionally, meaningless, and has been strongly influenced by Mike’s death and grief. It is also an avenue for self-discovery and transformation as she attempts to explore the depths of human consciousness and the ability (or not) to connect with something greater than ourselves. When not getting muddy Ali prefers the company of dogs over humans, particularly her Chihuahua Pedro. MARK WATSON IS GOING TO DIE Hyperactive, prolific and emotionally generous UK comedy superstar Mark Watson has won numerous awards for his work in standup over the years. Yet with all his success - in television, radio, and as the author of seven (!) novels, with an eighth on the way in 2025 - he's struggled a great deal with anxiety and mental health issues, both publicly and privately. LA PETITE MORT: SISTA ZAI ZANDA IS GOING TO DIE Every second week on MHIGTD we explore a conversation about mortality and survival with human beings who have skin in the game. And today we're asking the question: what does African philosophy teach us about the eternal nature of life? Sista Zai Zanda (Sista Zai/VaChihera) is an Afrofuturist, Poet and Womanist. Sista Zai was born in Harare, Zimbabwe and raised in a large extended family. VaChihera is from the Karanga language group and now lives as a Black African settler on Kulin Nations. Amongst career highlights, VaChihera is a 2019 recipient of the Neilma Sidney Travel Fund and a recipient of a Melbourne Strategic Scholarship for a PhD in Afrofuturism at the University Of Melbourne. One of her favourite Afrofuturistic philosophies is the ancient belief that no one and nothing dies, we just change form and, sometimes, reincarnate. ADAM LIAW IS GOING TO DIE. As irritatingly clever and kind and funny as he is, it pains me to tell you that chef, TV host and writer Adam Liaw is definitely going to die. But he's okay about it! Sort of, kind of, whenever he actually gives the idea of his own mortality some thought - which isn't often. In this episode, Adam puts his formidable brain to the task of planning his Dream Funeral - discussing legacies passed down via food, updating wills, and whether children should ever be allowed at funerals... Adam Liaw is a cook, TV presenter and writer based in Sydney, Australia. The winner of MasterChef Australia’s hugely popular second season, Adam’s triumph on the show still remains the #1 most watched non-sporting event in Australian television history. He was born in Malaysia before moving to Australia at a young age, and has lived and worked around the world including Australia, China, Malaysia, New Zealand, India and most recently a 7-year stint in Tokyo, Japan. Adam currently hosts the primetime food and travel program Destination Flavour on Australia’s SBS network, and is the author of the two cookbooks – Asian After Work and Two Asian Kitchens. He writes a regular column for The Wall Street Journal's Scene Asia and contributes regularly to Australian newspapers and magazines. MIRIAM MARGOLYES IS GOING TO DIE. What does planning a Dream Funeral look like for an 82-year-old national treasure (or 'national trinket' as she'd rather be known)?
