George Schlatter, creator of 60's TV show 'Laugh-In', talks Hollywood, laughter and his take on creativity today
In Hollywood today with the legendary George Schlatter, creator of Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In, an American sketch comedy television show inspired by the hippie counterculture, which aired on NBC from 1968-1973. The always vibrant (and perceptive!) 94 year old tells all about show biz - from getting the networks to pick up his shows 'Laugh-In', 'Turn On' and 'Real People', to working in Las Vegas with the greats like Lucille Ball, Frank Sinatra and Milton Berle; all the while keeping true to his core belief of how uncertainty - and yes, even at times failure - generate more creativity than anything else. Today's show is about media, but also has a spiritual spin to it, as veteran radio broadcaster Stefan Rybak and I talk about his personal memoir "The Shadow On My Heart - Faith. Family. Forgiveness." , a Top Ten Best Seller on Amazon. Stefan discusses his 40 years of success in radio, starting from his early days working at his hometown station in Waterbury, Connecticut (where he was an intern for local radio personality Tom Collins, later known to millions in the entertainment industry as voiceover professional Joe Cipriano); his work ethic that stretched from On-Air Talent to Program Director to General Manager, as well as several years of nonstop partying which led to a serious health scare. Stefan also tells the story of his parents (his mom, captured by the Nazi's in Poland and forced to work as a slave laborer, and his dad, a POW in Germany during WWII); how prayer was the key to their survival and later for himself as he faced surgery to correct a previously undiagnosed congenital heart defect. The Yance Covington interview
Here's a guy who notoriously played the bagpipes at the closing of a beloved music venue in Raleigh, NC known as 'The Brewery' back in 2011. Yance Covington, professional bagpiper and drummer, talks about those early days of punk and metal bands at the venue; his love of rock music and Scottish Bagpiping; playing in the North Carolina Pipes and Drums Band at NCSU (no easy feat!) and becoming a member of the Carolina Renaissance Festival. A proud supporter of local bands in the triangle area, he also set up a creative art venue in Garner, NC, where upcoming bands found a place to entertain new audiences. Enjoy!
