Today I'm combining North Dakota, North Carolina and California in one special podcast with actor Steve Gelder , who's recently wrapped up a cool gig as 'Dr. Bob' in "Bill W. and Dr. Bob" (Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob Smith) a theatre production about the founders of 'Alcoholics Anonymous'. The production recently wrapped up in Chicago ( catch the great review in the Chicago Tribune ). In addition to Steve's acting and directing credits - Cabbie (2007), 1000 Ways to Die (2008), Painter (2020), and his own independent film "Arc" (2004) - the North Dakota native worked 12 years as a stand-up comedian, headlining a number of comedy clubs across America, worked as a radio personality (WRDU 106 in Raleigh, NC), and was a writer for the syndicated newspaper column "Free Association". The versatile actor (who yes, actually bungee-jumped with CarrotTop!) talks about what it takes to get started in the entertainment business, the crazy world of auditions, and why getting the gig as Klingon #3 in the Star Trek franchise is at the top of his wish list. Dwight Douglas has worked in radio, consulted radio, brought software to radio (Selector anyone?) and now he's written a book about the radio business with ' True Radio Confessions - Sex, Drugs & Rock'n Roll' (available now on Amazon). It's the possibly true (but all names have been changed) fictional story of DJ Sonny Joe McPherson, who takes on a fifty year broadcasting journey filled with - you guessed it - sex, drugs and rock and roll. Dwight talks about his new novel (which by the way has a glossary of terms to help out the non-radio people understand what drives the radio industry), but also discusses his long standing gig with media executive Lee Abrams; a (true) story involving ironing and rocker Bob Seger; why characters like Forrest Gump matter, plus Dwight's take on lessons learned from the deregulation of radio. It's no easy feat becoming a bestselling author, but in today's episode, Elizabeth Spann Craig proves that with determination anything is possible. Houston radio legend and entrepreneur Dayna Steele has done it all: written books, organized The Space Store for NASA , and rocked the airwaves of KLOL Rock 101 in Houston; she’s now taking on roles as Broadway producer, actor and more with her play "The Woman in the Mirror" (based on her book) which will premiere in Houston the first two weeks in November. Dayna's "dark uplifting comedy about surviving Alzheimer's with Friends, Facebook and a Really Big Glass of Wine" candidly tells about her mother's journey with Alzheimer's; how the writing of the play started, why she's stays organized, and names the directors, actors and writers she's brought in throughout the entire production. Bringing the studio to Oregon with the infamous 100.7 WMMS morning show host Jeff Kinzbach , who has taken his show on the road with wife Patti and trust me, they are loving every minute! The legendary broadcaster, who hosted the morning show with Ed 'Flash' Ferenc at The Buzzard for 20 years, resigned from radio, put a few things in storage, sold the house, and instead of buying a ticket to the west coast (um, cue Billy Joel song) decided to buy a motorhome and tour the country. But before we discuss road trips, we get in a little backstory about radio stories with infamous rock stars, how WMMS and the community of Cleveland built the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame , how Cleveland came to be known as 'The Rock and Roll Capitol' and more. He also talks about how his daughter (who works for SpaceX in Los Angeles) was the inspiration for this new life on the road; why Patti is the navigator on their tour 'rockinNwheelin'; and no matter where he travels, why he will always be true to his Midwestern roots. Today's show is about media, but also has a spiritual spin to it, as veteran radio broadcaster Stefan Rybak and I talk about his personal memoir "The Shadow On My Heart - Faith. Family. Forgiveness." , a Top Ten Best Seller on Amazon. Stefan discusses his 40 years of success in radio, starting from his early days working at his hometown station in Waterbury, Connecticut (where he was an intern for local radio personality Tom Collins, later known to millions in the entertainment industry as voiceover professional Joe Cipriano); his work ethic that stretched from On-Air Talent to Program Director to General Manager, as well as several years of nonstop partying which led to a serious health scare. Stefan also tells the story of his parents (his mom, captured by the Nazi's in Poland and forced to work as a slave laborer, and his dad, a POW in Germany during WWII); how prayer was the key to their survival and later for himself as he faced surgery to correct a previously undiagnosed congenital heart defect. Listen as he talks about literary agents, working hard for what you want, his take on "processing problems through spiritual perspective" and the three important goals he had for writing his current book. My guest today talks about his very storied media career which started in the military, then over to news radio, and eventually led him to his new job as a screenwriter. J. Scott, an award winning broadcast journalist for WQDR 94.7 in Raleigh NC, has written a very special screenplay for the movie Koko (available on Amazon Prime), about a man who wants to marry his dog. I know, right? Here's a guy who notoriously played the bagpipes at the closing of a beloved music venue in Raleigh, NC known as 'The Brewery' back in 2011. Yance Covington, professional bagpiper and drummer, talks about those early days of punk and metal bands at the venue; his love of rock music and Scottish Bagpiping; playing in the North Carolina Pipes and Drums Band at NCSU (no easy feat!) and becoming a member of the Carolina Renaissance Festival. A proud supporter of local bands in the triangle area, he also set up a creative art venue in Garner, NC, where upcoming bands found a place to entertain new audiences. Enjoy!
