In the final episode of BRKIN Bread Season 1, Host Sabrina Clarke steps in the arena with some super scotch bonnet level conversation. Before the guests could even put their spoons in their apple pies, she poses the question of King Charles paying reparations. How much does 400 years of violations and decades of colonialism actually cost? As expected, the discourse strikes vital nerves, all guests don’t agree and all sides offer up a lot of food for thought. Historical injustices, systemic racism, The British Empire and King Leopold are firmly in the crosshairs as guests discuss “cutting the head off the hydra”. For the final episode of Sabrina’s specially curated table of Black women, the conversation edges even more closer to home. Like right on the doorstep and in the house with its shoes off. The great assembly of Black women continues! Once again, Host Sabrina Clarke and her specially invited dinner gather around the table to stop, chop and open up shop. The topic of the day is feminism. Not in the buzzword way but in this conversation, the guests discuss what feminism means to Black women with all its nuance, complexities and allure. The subject matter gets really deep when the issue of white women co-opting feminism to serve them and their needs is raised. "The f****** grifters. That's the podcast we shoulda launched with them." - Bill Simmons During his self-titled podcast, Bill Simmons, Founder of The Ringer and Head of Spotify’s global sports strategy, threw all the tea – hypothetically speaking – at the feet of Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle. The comment came after reports that Harry and Meghan’s podcast, Archetypes , will not be renewed for a second season in what has been described as a mutual decision by both parties to cut ties. The Sussexes first joined forces with Spotify in 2020 after they landed a $20 million deal with the company. Soon, after Simmon’s comments heated up the newswire, some people punched the air in agreement, and others called foul play on the court of professionalism. Sabrina, and her dinner guests, all of whom are podcast consumers, weigh in and share their views on this business relationship gone sour. The conversations tackle challenging ideas around the differences between a value exchange and a commercial agreement, publicity stunts and whether or not the relationship between Harry and Meghan is the product and NOT the podcast. Deep. In typical BRKIN Bread fashion, many other meaty subjects are chewed on, and our guests delve into the dynamics of Harry and Meghan’s relationship as they walk the balance between tradition and non-traditional approaches like holding hands in public. Seems simple, but the Royal Family doesn’t play that. The fat is not trimmed. In fact, it’s grilled to perfection as Sabrina and her guests explore if and how tradition dictates gender roles. Is it because of tradition that men are expected to take out the bins while women are expected to play the good W.I.F.E., as in wash, iron, fold clothes etc.? Our guests plant seeds in the fertile land of commitment and compromise. Elizabeth, Laura, Keith and Reetu are BRKIN Bread Guests for Episodes 16-18. The debate continues... Host Sabrina Clarke is once again joined by Elizabeth, Laura, Keith and Reetu to bring back the art of conversation, and the group picks up right where they left off. Sabrina and her dinner guests dive even deeper into the Huw Edwards and Glodi Wabelua debate and further unpack the major sticking points around where, when, and how racism, privilege and class show up, particularly in the justice system. Keith enters the centre when he bravely suggests that the issues facing the two people in question – and society at large – are less about the colour of their skin and more about class. Kwasi Boateng and Suella Braverman are namechecked as examples of people of colour who have risen high up in the political hierarchy, and the table has a spicy matrix-style response to that assertion. To close, some important themes come out in the conversations around the story of Glodi Wabelua and true to BRKIN Bread style; we will leave it to you to draw your own conclusions. For our next three episodes, Host Sabrina Clarke welcomes four new dinner guests to the BRKIN Bread table. Our host is joined by Elizabeth, Laura, Keith and Reetu. The conversation cuts to the bone of society’s pressing issues before the guests are asked about who they would like to invite for dinner. In a BRKIN Bread first, one of our guests mentions a woman! Who? We won’t spoil the answer here. Sabrina then opens up the discussion by revisiting the recent news scandal, where The Sun reported that a well-known BBC presenter, now revealed to be Huw Edwards, had allegedly paid a teenager "more than £35,000 in return for sordid images" based on allegations by their mother and stepfather. Shortly before Edwards was named, the Metropolitan Police reported that it had found no evidence of a crime and would not investigate further. Sabrina then shares the story of Glodi Wabelua, who was jailed in 2019, with two other men, for a drug trafficking case where they used youth as drug mules. It was a landmark case of modern slavery. Glodi, who himself was groomed, was sentenced to three and a half years. He serves some of the sentence and is released. Upon release, he changes his life by starting his own fitness company and turning away from a life of crime. However, Glodi is asked to return to prison as the result of a clerical error, even though he has been free for 13 months. Still with us? Good. The table is then asked to share their thoughts about who out of Huw Edwards and Glodi Wabelua should go to jail. There’s so much nuance here; the debate is tougher than a cheap steak. The discussion bravely traverses themes of justice and punishment and who has the right to decide on these matters. We get deeper than Atlantis and further explore the overlapping context around racism, privilege, the establishment and much more. Who gets to dodge the gavel and continue their travels, and WHY? You can expect our guests to cut out all the legalese and make it plain as they share their thoughts – all of which could probably find their way into both a court of law and the court of public opinion. To close out our celebration of #HipHop50, Sabrina and her dinner guests recall the glory days of Westside Connection and bow down to the greatness of women in Hip Hop. The conversation hits harder than brass knuckles in a pub fight. The table discusses the visibility of women in Hip Hop, how the mainstream music industry promotes women, the value of the cosign and more. Many names are checked, including Queen Latifah, Lil’ Kim, Foxy Brown, Rapsody, Jean Grae and Rah Digga. The knockout blow is when the guests tackle the gender pay gap and how little the work of women is valued and compensated despite the high level of excellence they display on a daily basis. Continuing with our #HipHop50 celebrations, we take it from the block to the boardroom, connect with the fully qualified pros and get deep into the business of Rap. Our dinner guests; Chris; Kevin and Wardah, along with host, Sabrina Clarke, connect like Voltron to talk about the mechanics of the money in Hip Hop. Nas said that he’s half man, half amazing and our guests are half creative, half business who all work behind the scenes in the music biz. With artists like Dr Dre, Tina Turner and Bob Dylan ‘suddenly’ selling their masters, the table answer the question: should artists sell their masters and get money now or let the bread cook for future generations? Money aside, as people who love Hip Hop, we also take the time to look inward at the community and hold each other accountable. This leads to an open discussion around misogyny and homophobia in Hip Hop. Considering Hip Hop has addressed and tackled these themes in different ways, Sabrina asks the question: “Are we complicit in these forms of discrimination by listening to Hip Hop?”. This discussion also leads the table down the rabbit hole of artist censorship and how viable self-regulation in art actually is. Whoa. RIP Black Rob. While Hip Hop has played a part in bigging up women, some would argue that the culture could do a better job. Sabrina sparks mad brain cells and drops science about the visibility – or lack therof – of women in Hip Hop. Like for real, why are there SO MANY top ten rapper lists without women included? You didn’t think about that one, did you? We did. So we talked about it. Don’t be a shook one. Chris, Kevin and Wardah are BRKIN Bread Guests for Episodes 13-15. We love Hip Hop at BRKIN Bread. Of course, we had to have a Hip Hop themed dinner to celebrate all things Hip Hop in honour of Hip Hop turning 50 on 11th August 2023. Hip Hop was called a fad, and so many people never thought that it could take it this far. But we’re glad it did, and we’re here for all of it. Joining our host, Sabrina Clarke, are three new dinner guests, all of whom are thoroughbred Hip Hop heads with a lot to say. In late February 2023, there was a public event at the Dalai Lama’s temple in Dharamshala, which was attended by about 100 young students who had just graduated from the Indian M3M Foundation. Shortly after this event, the Dalai Lama came under fire and faced allegations of inappropriate behaviour after kissing a young boy on the lips and asking him to “suck his tongue” at the same event. In our first virtual dinner, BRKIN Bread, host Sabrina Clarke is rejoined by Cherie, Jason and Mala to discuss the very important, sensitive and pressing subject of inappropriate behaviour from adults towards children. The Dalai Lama has since apologised for his behaviour, and it is important to note the outcry came only from the West. What does this incident say about how we as a global community look out for and treat children – who are often the most vulnerable among us? Was the Dalai Lama’s behaviour a mistake or molestation? Who decides the answer? It has been said that it takes a village to raise a child, but who and what will it take to protect them? ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI, is an artificial intelligence trained to follow instructions in a prompt. The technology has garnered attention for its detailed responses and articulate answers across various subjects and sectors. You can ask ChatGPT to write a proposal on how to use AI for tasks in the workplace, and it would. Artificial intelligence (AI) has been dominating the headlines lately, and it’s safe to say that the AI revolution will be televised to a screen near you whether you like it or not. Host Sabrina Clarke is rejoined by her first dinner guests to discuss one of the main discussions on AI, are you a fraud if you use it? Our guests work in various fields, from business to social care, and all understand AI is here to stay. However, is using AI black and white, or are there shades of grey? Should some people and sectors use it but not others? Will AI replace human intelligence? Is AI being misused? These are questions that need answers, and our guests have very strong views. For our first BRKIN Bread virtual dinner, host Sabrina Clarke is rejoined by the very first dinner guests from the first three episodes. Cherie, Jason, Joseph and Mala had never met prior to the recording, but the chemistry among them was natural and engaging even though the topics they discussed have led to fallouts and fistfights in other walks of life. The two-time dinner guests revisit some of their earlier debates to see how and if their views have changed or evolved. Rishi Sunak is still a hot topic, and so are the scones. For the very first curated table on BRKIN Bread, there was a community conversation with Black men. There were some very challenging and honest conversations that needed to be had. Across Episodes 7, 8 and 9, our dinner guests discussed masculinity, emasculation, racism and identity – all through the lens of being a Black man at various stages of life and love. The conversations were nuanced, vulnerable and humbling. As always, the food went down a treat and the Black man bonding continued after we chopped. For the final episode of Dinner 3, there is no chill. We like to keep the stove and conversation hot here at BRKIN Bread. Our specially curated table of Black men is asked to have a community conversation. Specifically, do Black men value Black women? Not love. Not like. But the key word here is value. What is life without relationships? We would argue not much. But one of the most important relationships you can have in this life is with your partner. Can Black Men value Black Women the same if their partner is not Black? We know. It's real out here. Our dinner guests are proud Black men, some with partners who are Black and some with partners who are not. Where do they stand in the debate? Do they not see colour or do they? Unexpectedly but necessarily, the conversation leads into the world of work, the younger generation, mentorship and mistakes that they feel their OGs made before them. Is there an agenda to emasculate Black men? No matter what currency you trade in, this question is worth millions. We don’t play at BRKIN Bread, and we get right down to the ackee and plantain of the matter. There have been murmurings and all-out arguments about Black men, the idea of masculinity and the supposed lack thereof for generations. Host Sabrina Clarke tackles the elephant in the room head-on by asking Black men what they think. Our guests don’t agree and make it known. This conversation is like a passage through time as our dinner guests share their experiences as Black men in the world of work – and the world in general – with a deft mix of reflective vulnerability and chest-thumping defiance. From being feared to fetishized and everything in between, these Black men get real about how they are really feeling and what they think. The table even goes back in time and highlights some tragic and painful truths from the horrors of the transatlantic slave trade, severed genitalia and how Black masculinity has been in the scope like the Public Enemy logo, even since back then. There were some minor technical challenges in the location recording of this episode which has affected the audio quality in certain places. We appreciate your understanding. New dinner guests join host Sabrina Clarke for her first-ever curated table. Let’s clap for that! We welcome Ade, Karl, Kwasi, Michael and Rob to the table to break bread, chew the fat and serve up some food for thought. As expected, our Host and dinner guests get right to it. The conversation opens with the table exploring the media’s newfound taste in chocolate-skinned men. The Black community still deals with colourism, but are men like Daniel Kaluuya and Damson Idris really changing the game for dark-skinned Black men? Are dark-skinned Black men an acquired taste or just the flavour of the month? The table also discusses Idris Elba’s comments about no longer being referred to as a Black actor. What impact do his comments have on Black men who are supporters of his and have to navigate the world of work, if any? Are Idris’ words and perspectives helpful or harmful? The South London Chapter of the #DarkSkinnedSociety speak with their minds and says everything with their chests. Ade, Karl, Kwasi, Michael and Rob are BRKIN Bread Guests for Episodes 7-9. Host Sabrina Clarke is joined by her special dinner guests, Camille, Lara, Onu and Paul to discuss the hot topic of Ukrainian refugees coming to the UK. Understandably, the debate sparked some hardline points based on principles and personal experiences. There were also poignant reflections and a change in position. The discussion was filled with ideas around free will, autonomy and even entitlement. Between the nuanced perspectives are healthy servings of grace, compassion and humour… as always! Background: On Thursday, 14th April 2022, the UK government announced a new migration plan. The initiative could see some people who came to the UK without a visa or other permission to enter the country sent to Rwanda to have their asylum claim processed and decided there. On Monday, 19th December 2022, the High Court ruled that the plan is lawful. As a result of Russia invading Ukraine in 2022, a number of Ukrainian people have come to the UK as part of the Homes for Ukraine scheme. However, as highlighted in a recent Channel 4 report, some Ukrainian refugees are struggling to co-exist in an ethnically diverse Britain. In Episode 1, Sabrina and her dinner guests discussed if Rishi Sunak’s appointment as PM represents diversity in the UK. In Episode 2, it’s politics as usual, and the opinions are even spicier. The BRKIN Bread crew continues their delicious three-course dinner, dive deeper into the political sphere and explores the complex idea of democracy. Does democracy really exist? Who controls the politics? Do our votes matter? In the words of Dead Prez, everything is politics, and our roundtable of foodies and conversationalists speak truth to power directly to those in power. Of course, Brexit is mentioned too. --------- Cherie, Jason, Joseph and Mala are BRKIN Bread Guests for Episodes 1-3.
