Our guest today is William Sofield; a man with a calling as tender as it is powerful. In this conversation, we’ll explore what it means to bring hope where there is sorrow, light where there is darkness, and faith where questions abound. You’ll hear incredible stories of God’s presence in the final chapters of life and be reminded that even in our hardest moments, we are never alone. Check out William's podcast, The Hopper . This was a tough one, but I knew that it was a topic that should be addressed. The extremes of mental health issues are difficult to talk about, but still important. Send us a text In this episode, I have the honor of speaking with Clint Zeller; the former pastor of Grace Life Church in Magnolia, Texas. In July of 2023, Clint and his wife, Laura, made the decision that might have seemed puzzling to some, perhaps even disheartening. They made the difficult choice to close the doors of their church a place where the community gathered, worshiped, and served. "Why would they do this?" Some may ask. Was it a lack of faith, a failure, or a defeat? Not at all. It was a decision made in obedience to what they believe God was calling them to do. It was a challenging and prayerful process—one that involved seeking wisdom and discernment in every step. Closing the doors of Grace Life was not about giving up or walking away. It was about embracing the unknown, about trusting in a higher plan that is beyond our human understanding. It was about being open to the next chapter, whatever that might be. Send us a text In this, the final episode of season 4, we will take a look at an important aspect of faith in Christ; rest and renewal. God knew that we would need physical, emotional, and spiritual rest. He understood that our bodies and minds require renewal to function at their best. Yet in our modern society, we often neglect this sacred rhythm of busyness, striving, and the pursuit of success. Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.” –Matthew 11:28-30 He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. –Psalm 23:2-3 Behold, I am making all things new. –Revelation 21:5 Big thanks to my friend, Britney, for the amazing poetry reading in this episode! Send us a text Story Time: A recent breakfast with some of my closest friends ended with a very unexpected twist. “Do not complain about growing old. It is a privilege denied to many.” — Mark Twain Psalm 90:12 - Teach us to realize the brevity of life, so that we may grow in wisdom. James 4:14 – How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like the morning fog—it’s here a little while, then it’s gone. Psalm 39:4 - Lord, remind me how brief my time on earth will be. Remind me that my days are numbered – how fleeting my life is. Psalm 118:24 - This is the day that the Lord has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it. If you enjoyed this show, please subscribe, rate, and review this podcast. Don't forget to share this episode with friends and fellow worshippers. In this first episode, Mike bravely shares his journey, from his first exposure to pornography as a young boy to the full-blown addiction that followed him into adulthood. Send us a text Welcome to The Nook Podcast, where we explore stories of faith, hope, and redemption. In this episode, we are joined by Michael Ray Lewis . Michael grew up as an Atheist and his disbelief in God continued until the age of 26 when his wife told him she felt like Jesus was calling her back. Michael began asking questions about science and evolution that were difficult for many Christians to answer. However, digging deeper, he found out about Christian Apologetics and resources offering evidences for God’s existence. Michael also shares information about a film he is currently producing, titled Universe Designed . This is a documentary that will explore some of the evidences for God’s existence. With interviews from some of the world’s top Christian apologists, such as Dr. Frank Turek and Dr. Hugh Ross , this film will present a few of Christianity’s best arguments. As a former atheist, director Michael Ray Lewis has since discovered these evidences and given his life to Jesus. This has compelled Michael to share the information he has discovered with the world. Send us a text We all carry places of anxiety, shame, and fear. But what if, instead of trying to control or squash what feels broken in us, we invited God to meet us there? This is holy vulnerability: offering our wounds to our Father so he can love us there. With pastoral tenderness, Kellye Fabian shines a light on the path into holy vulnerability: six unexpected spiritual practices that open us to God’s healing and transformation. Holy Vulnerability helps us notice where brokenness is leaking into our lives and then leads us into surrender, common prayer, encouragement, laughter, community, and tangible engagement with creation to find how God mends us with his presence. As we intentionally seek God in our ache―as we step out in holy vulnerability―he will meet us there. And we will be changed. Kelley's Books: (I cannot recommend them enough!) Send us a text In this episode, I take an interesting look at The Parable of the Good Samaritan. At the end of a brutal mid-term election season, it's vital to look at what is diving so many people and consider what God would have us do. From chapter 10 of the Gospel of Luke The Most Important Commandment 25 One day an expert in religious law stood up to test Jesus by asking him this question: “Teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life?” 26 Jesus replied, “What does the law of Moses say? How do you read it?” 27 The man answered, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind.’ And, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”[ a ] 28 “Right!” Jesus told him. “Do this and you will live!” 29 The man wanted to justify his actions, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” Parable of the Good Samaritan 30 Jesus replied with a story: “A Jewish man was traveling from Jerusalem down to Jericho, and he was attacked by bandits. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him up, and left him half dead beside the road. 31 “By chance a priest came along. But when he saw the man lying there, he crossed to the other side of the road and passed him by. 32 A Temple assistant[ b ] walked over and looked at him lying there, but he also passed by on the other side. 33 “Then a despised Samaritan came along, and when he saw the man, he felt compassion for him. 34 Going over to him, the Samaritan soothed his wounds with olive oil and wine and bandaged them. Then he put the man on his own donkey and took him to an inn, where he took care of him. 35 The next day he handed the innkeeper two silver coins,[ c ] telling him, ‘Take care of this man. If his bill runs higher than this, I’ll pay you the next time I’m here.’ 36 “Now which of these three would you say was a neighbor to the man who was attacked by bandits?” Jesus asked. 37 The man replied, “The one who showed him mercy.” Then Jesus said, “Yes, now go and do the same.” Support the show Questions or comments can be sent to steven@nookpodcast.com Join The Nook Facebook page ! In this episode, I have the honor of introducing you to Chris and Stephanie Teague ; they are a music duo from Nashville, TN. Their's is a story that may surprise you. They started as high school sweethearts, married while in college, and began what seemed to be a normal life as a young newlywed couple. But just a couple short years in, Chris' faith began to fade and sadly, that led to the couple divorcing. BUT GOD Thankfully, the story didn't end there... and in this show, you will hear an amazing story of redemption. Send us a text In this episode, I get to share a most interesting story… one that you may have a hard time believing. Life for Ashley Lagos started fairly normal. But things started to take a turn when she was just 4 years old. ***Parental Warning : The subject matter in this episode is of an adult nature . And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength. And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today. Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up. Nothing about that description sounds like anything that any of us would ever seek and yet, it's a thing we all have dealt with, and may very well have to deal with again. My suffering was good for me, for it taught me to pay attention to your decrees. –Psalm 119:71 ...knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. –Romans 5:3-5 *** The Saints and Sages Podcast is a unique and engaging new show that invites listeners to embark on a spiritual journey through the timeless wisdom of deceased Christian authors. Send us a text If you have never seen any of the I Am Second short films, you are missing out! I Am Second is about story; real stories of life transformation that happens by putting God first and living second. Joining me for this episode is the Executive Director, Mike Jorgensen. He has such great insights into the short films that have had such a wide appeal, but the accompanying resources as well. From their website: It all began as an experiment. We wanted to challenge the status-quo in people’s lives in one city, our hometown of Dallas. So in 2008, we launched as a local nonprofit aiming to reach our city with the stories of a different kind of life. At the time, the steep rise in online video content was just beginning to gain traction. We joined that early movement with a unique message of our own through a series of 20 short films. Each film captured the true and authentic story of an individual whose life had been changed. At the end of every story, the person summarized their new life with one singular statement: “I Am Second” *** Questions or comments about this or any episode: My email: steven@nookpodcast.com Join The Nook Facebook page ! Send us a text The most unique aspect of The Short Creek Dream Center located in Hildale, Utah is that it is actually housed in the former home of convicted FLDS cult leader, Warren Jeffs . While Jeffs has been in prison for many years now, his acts of mental and sexual abuse over the entire area have left a mark on that region that will take decades to repair. Enter my guests for this episode, Luke and Konstance Merideth. They co-lead the efforts in running the Short Creek Dream Center as a place where those who were left with such deep wounds can find all new hope. They both have such amazing stories of personal redemption that now motivate them to offer that same redemption to others. *** Questions or comments about this or any episode: My email: steven@nookpodcast.com Join The Nook Facebook page ! Send us a text One aspect of real wisdom is the understanding that you still have so much to learn. As a follower of Christ, I am more than a little embarrassed that I have just recently started a real concerted effort to read the bible on a daily basis. Like so many other things, it wasn't easy getting started, but now it is a good habit that I so enjoy! Does it seem like getting to know God is just too hard? Does so much of the bible just seem to go over your head? You are not alone. This is a great discussion designed to encourage you to get started right where you are... and maybe more importantly, to not beat yourself up if it doesn't go perfectly. Rob Chagdes is a pastor, author, and podcast producer. He's also a husband and father of 3... but beyond all that, he's a guy who loves God and has some great insights on how to find your own rhythm in reading the bible and getting the most out of it. While he had his dream job, an unexpected conversation with Coach Tony Dungy sparked a different mindset in Jason that ultimately opened a door to taking all of his experience in sports television and radio and moving into a ministry that goes beyond the game and into the personal faith-lives of the people we watch on television. *** Questions or comments about this or any episode: My email: steven@nookpodcast.com Join The Nook Facebook page ! Send us a text Ray De La Nuez grew up with the understanding that manhood was based on notching countless, meaningless encounters with women and a carefree party lifestyle. It wasn't until he had a near panic attack on a San Diego beach that he realized in a moment that his trajectory was going nowhere. He knew he needed God, even though he had no idea what that looked like at the time. While he will be the first to tell you that he has not mastered it yet, he strives to live in the calling to be all that God wants him to be... and to help other men find that same fulfillment. Send us a text It has been said that marriage is the hardest job you may ever have; to stay with it takes work, patience, and endless grace. Seth and Melanie Studley have been through the fire with some immense marital challenges. But rather than give up and walk away, they chose to show up, own their own messes, and do the hard work necessary to have a great marriage. They will be the first to tell you that they are far from perfect on this topic, but they have chosen to make helping others with their marriages a passion. They have a no-holds-barred approach that cuts through the crud and gets down to the real stuff we all deal with. Send us a text Over 21 years ago, my guest Pat Bradley traveled to South Sudan, Africa—a journey that left an indelible mark on his heart and opened his eyes to urgent humanitarian needs. Witnessing firsthand the extreme poverty and hunger, Pat was compelled to act. What began as a humble initiative to distribute two-pound bags of rice to feed the starving has since evolved into a robust program providing aid to hundreds of people across 11 countries. Through his organization, Crisis Aid, Pat has expanded his mission to include a specialized pediatric malnutrition clinic in Eastern Africa and a safe haven for women rescued from human trafficking. His unwavering dedication to serving those in need exemplifies true generosity and humility. All too often, we look the other way when it comes to having tough conversations with friends and family who seem to be on a downward spiral. Add a global pandemic to the mix of an already stressed out world and the isolation and panic that came with it just seems to escalate things all the more. Send us a text Christian ministry is not for the faint of heart; no matter what aspect people work in, there will be unthinkable challenges. Ask anyone who has ever volunteered at their church or been on a church or para-church staff about their time spent and you will likely find stories of personal challenges, misunderstandings, and burnout. My guest today has lived in all of that and then some. Send us a text TV News is an interesting world; fast paced, ever-shifting, and moving place to place. Stephanie Smith was working in a big TV market and initially had designs on staying... but that's about the time that God told her that it was time to move on. He will do that; give you your next move without telling you what's beyond that. While it may seem crazy to some, that is exactly what faith and obedience are all about. Check out Stephanie's Instagram feed. *** Questions or comments about this or any episode: My email: steven@nookpodcast.com Join our Facebook page ! Send us a text Welcome to The Nook! This is a short but deeper look into what you can expect from this podcast on a weekly basis. Faith in God is messy and rarely symmetrical or predictable. Most of the time you'll be hearing stories and real insights from my guests who are all still in the process of walking out their own faith. I believe that we can learn so much from each other and lean on each other.
