In this episode of Navigate, Tim is reflecting on building trust through transition seasons. Navigating change requires trust building. But that’s not always easy. It can sometimes feel like digging a well in hostile or unknown territory. Tim compares the process of trust building with the ancient practice of digging wells. In the Bible, wells were regularly places of divine appointments and answers to prayer. They were places of provision, but also points of contact. A good well was reliable, life-giving and life-sustaining. Likewise, when we dig wells of trust through the seasons - with God and with others - we are storing up a reliable source of relational capital, namely trust . Tim offers some important communication tips to help us dig wells of trust in transition. Sources: Craig Groeschel quote The Holy Bible (NIV Version) Support the show Thanks for listening in! How are you leaning into change in this season? What’s your posture like? Have you been resisting or embracing the changes in your life? In this episode of Navigate with Tim Austin , Tim reflects upon seasons of change and how these become opportunities to discover and embrace our true identities and live with greater purpose and fulfillment. Tim has a deep appreciation for the many creative ways seasonal change has helped him approach change on a personal level. Tim says, "Sometimes we might resist change because of the way it challenges our sense of identity and purpose. I’ve come to view certain transition seasons as an opportunity for shedding and letting go of the non-essentials. For getting back to what matters. For learning to walk out my days with less baggage, not more." Welcome to this 40th episode of Navigate! This milestone episode marks the completion of three conversations -one with each of Tim's adult Third Culture Kids. By the way, if you’re unfamiliar with the term Third Culture Kid, or TCK for short, have a listen to episode 39, where podcast guest Chad Phillips does a great job of unpacking that for us. This episode conversation brings in Luke Austin. Luke has spent the majority of his life outside of the United States, which happens to be his passport country. During his childhood and teen years, Luke roamed the globe with his parents, residing mostly in Central Asia and Turkey. Luke and his family returned to the U.S. in 2016, the summer he graduated from high school. Luke currently lives with his wife Maria in Chicago, where he works as a digital marketing team leader with an Orange County based company. The Austin family recently had the opportunity to return to Turkey for a brief visit, and this conversation takes place from there. As a heads up, there is an added touch of realism to this conversation. The context is outside on the terrace of the Austin's guest apartment, where Tim and Luke had some gusty winds to deal with. Nonetheless we think you’re going to enjoy getting to know Tim's son Luke Austin… Here's some additional resources on the topic of TCK's: Podcast Episodes: Core Values with Adrianne Verheyen Third Culture Kids with Emma Austin Third Culture Kids and Transition with Chad Phillips TCK Re-Entry/Transition: https://interactionintl.org/programs/transition-seminar/ https://www.barnabas.org/member-care/events/mk-transitional-seminar Books: Third Culture Kids: Growing Up Among Worlds , by David C. Third Culture Kids or TCK’s for short…Who are they and what defines them? How did the term originate? And why is it important for us to understand the unique opportunities and challenges they face? You'll hear about all of this and more with Tim's good friend and guest on the show, Chad Phillips. Chad Phillips is a TCK from South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and The Netherlands. He spent his first 18 years overseas. He also served TCKs internationally in Singapore and Belgium. Chad has been directing International Society of Missionary Kids (ISMK) since 2004, and continues to coach TCKs (and their families) on a global scale. He has an M.A. in Christian Ministries from AGTS, with an emphasis in life coaching and eight years of professional life-coaching experience. After graduating high school from The American School of The Hague, Chad went to North Central University in Minneapolis, and did his internship in Singapore. It was during his college years that Chad met his beautiful bride, Dargan. Chad and Dargan are parents to two young adult TCK’s, Katherine and Graham. TCK’s are an amazing group of human beings. Tim and his wife Eve are parents to three TCK’s, so they are definitely near and dear to his heart and the motivation for producing this series of episodes about TCK's. What's your relationship to TCK's, or what could it be? What might be your call to action in response to this conversation? Raising awareness in your church community? Befriending a TCK? Reaching out to the parents of a TCK? Supporting those like Chad and Dargan Phillips who are on the front lines working with TCK’s? Praying for TCK’s and their families as they adjust and acculturate to new situations and environments? Tim's guest for this episode is Emma Austin, a young adult TCK who has spent most of her life living in Central Asia and Turkey. She is also Tim's daughter. Navigating transition from high school to the next thing can be challenging for any young adult, but TCK's bring a unique set of challenges and strengths to the process. Join Tim and Emma as they talk about what it's like to journey with God and surrender to Him through big choices. Follow Emma's blog Support Emma Notes: The term third culture kid (TCK) may be new to some. TCK's are people who were raised in a culture other than their parents' or the culture of their country of nationality, and also live in a different environment during a significant part of their child development years. They typically are exposed to a greater volume and variety of cultural influences than those who grow up in one particular cultural setting. The term applies to both adults and children, as the term "kid" refers to the individual's formative or developmental years. TCKs move between cultures before they have had the opportunity to fully develop their personal and cultural identity. The first culture of such individuals refers to the culture of the country from which the parents originated, the second culture refers to the culture in which the family currently resides, and the third culture refers to the amalgamation of these two cultures. (Source: Wikipedia ) Tim and his wife Eve have raised three TCK's, who are now young adults with some stories to tell. Support the show Thanks for listening in! In this episode of Navigate, Tim has a conversation with Dave Lovett about their overlapping years living in Central Asia and some of the life lessons they've learned. Vision, when left untamed, can have a way of crowding out our enjoyment of the simple things in life. It has the potential to sabotage relationships, drying up an otherwise fruitful life. Church planters can face this. Entrepreneurs struggle with this. Just about anyone with ambition. What do you do with a when vision collides with unmet expectations? Holding onto a vision, as our guest will share today, can sometimes feel like holding a tiger by the tail. When so much about living in uncertain times and places is focused on survival, how can we keep the vision alive and not neglect the people most important to us? These are real questions not only for cross-cultural workers; they are universal concerns for anyone desiring to maintain a healthy work/life balance. Listen in! About Dave Lovett: In l979, Dave served for two years with Operation Mobilization in India, Pakistan and Europe in a ministry of discipleship and evangelism. Pam and Dave met at Bethany College of Missions and graduated in l982 with BA's in Missions and Theology. They were married in October of l982. After marriage, Dave and Pam went with OM to India and Pakistan in l983-85 to lead OM's base for training, outreach/church ministry, hospitality and administration in New Delhi, India. They served for two years in Bangladesh (1986-88), where Dave was the Director of an OM training program for Bangladeshi young men from Hindu and Muslim backgrounds. They worked for two years (l988-90) in Pakistan, along the border of Afghanistan learning the Afghan Dari language and culture. After eight years of ministry, they took a sabbatical, and Dave did an MA in Intercultural Studies and Missions at Wheaton Graduate School (l990-91). While at Wheaton, they agreed with OM leaders to pioneer a new ministry in Tajikistan. In August l992, they felt God leading them to start a new organization called the Central Asian Development Agency (CADA.) From 1993-2006, Dave and Pam’s team helped start four registered churches and many home groups for the new believers. In 2001, they started a new ministry in Afghanistan with Operation Mercy that has grown to a team of 15-20 staff working in three cities and in rural areas. In January 2004, they started a new ministry in Iran working in disaster relief with earthquake victims and with Afghan refugee women and their families. Today, Dave and Pam serve as regional Leaders for OM’s ministries in Central and South Asia, overseeing the ministries in Iran, India, Pakistan and Bangladesh (as well as 10 other countries). Episode 20 of Navigate features a conversation with Dennis Conrad about embracing cultural and ethnic diversity among our churches. Culture-specific churches present a unique set of challenges and opportunities. Tim and Dennis talk about what characterizes a culture-specific church and the multi-generational families within these churches. Ministry leaders serving in their home countries and cross-culturally will be moved by Dennis' heart and motivated by his challenge to love, listen to, and embrace those who are different from us. For over 10 years, Dennis Conrad has been Director of Intercultural Ministries for the Nor-Cal-Nevada District of the Assemblies of God, which means he has served as liaison between the District Resource Center and culture-specific churches. (Currently, there are close to 100 second-language churches in the NCN District from the Fijian, Filipino, Samoan, Slavic, and Tongan Fellowships, and individual churches that are Arabic, Chinese, Deaf, East Indian, Hispanic, Iranian, Japanese, Korean, Native American, Portuguese, Romanian, and Vietnamese.) Dennis and Lynda were associate pastors in youth ministry and Christian Ed (full-time and part-time) in Susanville, Orangevale, and Modesto, California. Dennis has an M.A. in education and taught 25 years in CA public schools. Lynda worked as a principal's secretary for over 20 years, and has taught children's church most of her life. The Conrads lived in Fiji from 2002 to 2007 where they taught at the South Pacific Bible College. As Intercultural Ministries Director, they have been privileged to visit several other countries represented by churches in the District: Tonga, Samoa, Ukraine & Russia. And they have been guest teachers of English at Evangel Bible College in Myanmar (Burma) on four different occasions. Dennis and Lynda have developed a love for people of other cultures, and believe that God has sovereignly placed them in the position of Director of Intercultural Ministries for Northern-California-Nevada District. Tim wraps up this first year of Navigate talking to Dr. Sam Huddleston about cultivating honor in the places we live and serve as leaders. While there are many components to healthy culture, honor is certainly an important one which often gets neglected in the rush to get things done. Discover how cultivating a culture of honor can transform your relationships and create an atmosphere where ministry can flourish. Bio: Dr. Samuel Huddleston, Assistant Superintendent of the Northern California and Nevada District Assemblies of God assists in giving oversight to over 430 churches. He also served as the founding pastor of Lighthouse Covenant Fellowship in Benicia, California from 1993 to 2004, a church that was started in his living room. He served as the lead Pastor for 11 ½ years until he was elected to his present position. Graduating in 1980 from Bethany College in Santa Cruz, CA, Samuel and his wife Linda moved to San Rafael, California, where he attended Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary. Sensing a call to youth ministry, Samuel accepted a position at Church on the Hill in Vallejo, California, where he served from 1981 to 1988 under Pastor Terry Inman. While there, Pastor Inman encouraged Samuel further his education, and he subsequently enrolled at Azusa Pacific University, eventually earning his Masters Degree in Marriage Family and Child Counseling. That educational experience also helped Samuel to finally understand his troubled childhood and what had driven him, years earlier as a reckless teenager, to be involved in a crime that had cost him five years of his life in prison. While incarcerated, Samuel surrendered his life to Christ and learned about God’s unconditional love. His autobiography, Five Years to Life, has inspired people across America and throughout the world, giving them hope for a new beginning. Samuel has shared his testimony with thousands – including, government officials, businessmen, colleges, high schools, and prison inmates – reminding them not only with words but also with his very presence, that God has the power to put broken lives and broken relationships back together again. Before entering the pastorate in Benicia, Samuel was appointed Executive Director of Match Two Prisoner Outreach, at the time was the largest and most successful prison visitation program in the nation, which matches adult inmates and wards (youth) with outside volunteer visitors. Serving from 1988 to 1994, Samuel Huddleston remains the only former prisoner to ever lead a California Department of Corrections program. For 2 ½ years after M-2, during the time he was pastoring Samuel returned to his alma mater to serve as Dean of Students at Bethany University under Dr. Everett Wilson. It was while serving under Dr. Wilson that Samuel decided to continue his education at Regent University in Virginia Beach, Virginia. In May 2006 Samuel received his Doctorate of Ministry degree from R

When life and ministry is good and you have a lot invested, where do you go with that internal shift, that feeling that change is looming around the corner? Just the thought of walking away onto a blank canvas can sound terrifying. At times leaders are called to take big risks, leaps of faith into the unknown. And it's in those times that we can feel most alone and misunderstood. In this episode of Navigate Tim continues his conversation with Jennifer Davis as they talk about her personal process of leaving and accepting God's invitation to paint on a new canvas.
