Around the world, there are several civil society groups fighting to ensure that government take the digital rights of her citizens seriously. In Nigeria, we have Paradigm Initiative. For many of us, losing internet connectivity for a day or having our favourite social media platforms disrupted for a couple of hours would be annoying, but should we be a more concerned about the implications of such events, especially when they happen during elections or vote counting? Should we be worried that the government can spy and punish anyone they please because they are pro-opposition? Why should you care if you’re neither pro-opposition nor very vocal on social media? To help us answer these questions, I spoke with Gbenga Sesan, Executive Director of Paradigm Initiative. He is also a Non-Resident Fellow at the Digital Civil Society Lab at Stanford University. Prior to starting Paradigm Initiative, 'Gbenga led the Lagos Digital Village, a joint project of Junior Achievement of Nigeria, Microsoft and Lagos State Government. Gbenga was listed by CNN as one of the Top 10 African Tech Voices on Twitter and by Ventures Africa as one of 40 African Legends Under 40. He has been advising the World Health Organisation on Data Privacy during the ongoing pandemic and is also advising the World Economic Forum on its Operationalising Trust Project, to develop rights-respecting Data Policy for businesses. There’s no denying that the words we speak in our minds, read, in books, say to others or write with our pens can have a profound effect on us and others around us. One art form borne out of the incredible power of words is poetry. When you take the words off a page and perform them in front of an audience, the additional element of the performer’s passionate rendition, facial expressions, and body language can produce an even more profound impact on audiences. Do you have important things to say and powerful messages to share? Are you an aspiring poet or wish your words could have more of an impact on others? In this episode, I have a chat with Maryam Bukar Hassan, also known as Alhanislam about what she does as a performance poet. She has performed at major festivals and events including the Ake Arts and Book Festival and the Kaduna Book and Arts Festival. She shot into the limelight after she released a video of her poem on domestic violence, titled: ‘VIOLENCE HAS NO RELIGION’. Alhanislam is also the founder of Deen at heart, an organization that focuses on the moral re-engineering of young people.

The humanitarian sector in Nigeria has evolved over the years, making huge impact on citizens and improving societal well being, while also aiding the growth and development of the nation through the different social intervention schemes car- ried out by state and non-state actors. It is on record that the sector holds huge potential for socio economic transformation, but the Nigerian government before now has not been able to harness the sectoral opportunities due to poor coordi- nation and lack of better management approach. However, the decision by the President Muhammadu Buhari led administration setting up the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development on Wednesday August 21st 2019 by an Executive pronouncement is poised to change the fortune of the humanitarian sector in Nigeria and by extension Africa for the better if well-manage. The responses from stakeholders in the sector have been overwhelming, as a lot of stakeholders are beginning to postulate that the ministry, if well-coordinated and managed through contemporary innovative strategic approach and deliverables, could be the next big thing for national socioeconomic transformation. The later inspired the Nigeria Humanitarian Action (NIHA) platform which is poised to drive contemporary initiatives that are aimed at the growth and develop- ment of the humanitarian sector in Nigeria. The NIHA inaugural Honorary Interactive Dinner is set to host the Honorable Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development and her team in the new ministry. One of the strategic goals of the Nigeria Humanitarian Action (NIHA) – Honorary Dinner is to create proper stakeholders’ synergy and support for the overall success of the new ministry by bringing the entire stakeholders in the humanitarian workplace together to demonstrate solidarity, interact and share ideals. The platform offers to convene and bring together all major stake- holders in the humanitarian sector by the National Democracy Stakeholders Group (NDSG) and it promoters – Save the Future of the African Child also known as M-MASS, Pan Africa Global Charity in collaboration with sector stakeholders nation-wide.
