In this episode from early May, we spoke with then-Senator, now recently named Lieutenant Governor Brian Benjamin about what he's doing to put an end to bad policing in New York City. The George Floyd Justice In Policing Act is toothless and wouldn’t have saved Mr. Floyd’s life. But there is another bill being presented in New York that could keep bad actor police officers from killing civilians. And today, Eboni and Dustin speak with Senator Brian Benjamin who is sponsoring the Wandering Officers Act. Ahead of that conversation Eboni and Dustin dig into the reinstatement of the cop who shot and killed Rayshard Brooks; all the important reasons fired cops should not be allowed to jurisdiction-hop; and the ins and outs of defamation, slander, and libel brought to you by the messiness of Tristan Thompson, Khloe Kardashian and IG model, Sydney Chase. Let’s hold court! Learn more about the Wandering Officers Act and sign the petition to urge Governor Cuomo to sign it into law! Follow Eboni K. Do we have a show for you this week. Eboni and Dustin are giving nothing less than their usual colorful commentary on everything from their secret weekend plans to the release of... DONDA. It’s nothing new, we just have more data to prove it now: The Feds have intentionally and disproportionately targeted Black Lives Matter protesters and organizers in order to stop the Black liberation movement. This week Eboni and Dustin go all the way in analyzing the report and its similarities to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s assassination and the assassination of Fred Hampton. Plus, we get into the drama surrounding Beyonce & Jay-Z’s Basquiat debacle, Dustin explains those damn milk crates to Eboni, and the absolute dumpster fire of damning testimony about R. Kelly and Aaliyah during the first week of trial for R. Kelly. Follow Eboni K. Williams on IG or TW , and Dustin Ross on IG or TW Holding Court with Eboni K. Eboni and Dustin strongly disagree on how the hip hop mogul should handle the situation - a conversation you’ll love. We know that Kelly Clarkson isn’t part of The Culture but just walk with us for a moment. Her recent divorce and the exorbitant amount of spousal and child support she’s been ordered to pay her ex are a cautionary tale for us all. Eboni and Dustin break down those payments and the reason marriage is so much more than romance. (Can you see a steady thread this season?) We also get into the DaBaby’s (aka DaDummy's) hateful and harmful homophobic rant at Rolling Loud, Kim Kardashian’s name embroiled in yet another copyright lawsuit - this time with a Black woman owned skincare brand, and why millions of Americans are facing eviction because the government can't seem to do it's motherf*cking job. Just when you thought things couldn’t get any worse for Robert Kelly...they did. On this episode Eboni and Dustin get straight to the new allegations against the R&B singer ahead of his already turbulent upcoming trial. Eboni also gets really real about the almost $300k per month that Dr. Dre must begin paying his estranged wife and why he’s dumb to do it. And last but not least, Eboni and Dustin discuss the big time hypocrisy of the Olympics when it comes to which cannabis products athletes can and can’t use. Eboni and Dustin are getting some much-needed R&R this week but we aren't leaving you hanging. This episode is a short compilation of some of the headlines we've enjoyed covering this year that highlight the strides being made by and for Black people even in the face of opposition. Think of it as an extended Juneteenth celebration of Black resilience and positivity. We've covered everything from reparations in Illinois and Virginia, to the Black female officer who won a years-long battle for backpay, to the precedent Baltimore (namely State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby) is setting when it comes to nonviolent crimes. We just love when our episodes connect. Remember our breakdown of the Kandi/BoyzIIMen “splits” controversy? Well, it seamlessly explains the recent commotion surrounding the implosion of The Joe Budden Podcast. Eboni and Dustin expertly (and hilariously) discuss the ins and outs of business partnership and starting sh*t the way you want to finish it. Also on today’s docket: Gary Owens’ estranged wife is coming for that spousal support and Eboni explains exactly what that means; the genetic trait that law enforcement and medical officials have been using to cover murderous cops’ asses when they kill Black people; and Eboni drops knowledge on the unbelievable hoops Black people have to jump through to get a fair shake in the housing industry. But before they get to that Eboni breaks down why none of us should be worried about Chauvin getting an appeal; Dustin shares his emotional reaction to Juror #52 Brandon Mitchell’s recent interview with Gayle King; and of course, we absolutely listen to you, the jurors - Eboni breaks down why Michael Jackson’s accusers won’t be getting any kind of settlement. Now, jurors you know we don’t speculate. We don’t surmise. We work with facts and experience only. That being said, on this special episode of Holding Court, Eboni and Dustin offer not only their legal and cultural analysis but also their very real-time reactions to the Derek Chauvin trial verdict. Eboni shares her thoughts on the prosecution strategy, the most important testimonies and what this could mean for the future of justice in America. And this episode’s docket is short and sweet, with updates in R.Kelly’s case (and it doesn’t look good). We also take a look at the case of former Buffalo, NY officer Cariol Horne who has recently won a major ruling and has secured a new law geared toward police officers’ duty to intervene. The change we’ve been seeking for America’s criminal (in)justice system is coming to a judge’s bench near you. That change is Black women. On today’s episode we’ve got a special conversation with Judge Shamieka Rhinehart of North Carolina’s 14th Judicial District. Judge Rhinehart breaks down how important Black women are to the American legal system and how crucial it is to see the face behind each case that comes before her. Eboni and Dustin discuss the Black women who are moving and shaking in law including Suzette Malveaux, who could become the first Black woman appointed to the 10th Circuit Federal Court; Bruce Beach, the Black-owned beach that is being returned to its rightful owners 100 years after being stolen by the state; and the tragic and angering death of 20-year-old Daunte Wright, not far from where George Floyd was murdered. Eboni and Dustin also dig into what they’re loving about Virginia - ( It’s the 16th state to legalize recreational cannabis!) and what they hate about Virginia (The vicious VA police officer who pepper sprayed and assaulted 2nd lieutenant Caron Nazario after taunting him for being afraid); and Utah’s new bill mandating that biological fathers pay up for pregnancy costs. We’re not even going to hold you: You already know this episode is jam-packed with important headlines and intricate breakdowns. America’s (and England’s) racist bones are being dug up and people don’t like it! Eboni breaks down just how America’s uptick in hate crimes against Asian communities happened (*cough cough* Trump’s @ss) and Dustin is absolutely, positively OVER Sharon Osbourne whose history of alleged racist remarks is coming to light in real time. We also discuss the 76-year-old Asian woman who caught her white male attacker slippin’ and gave as good as she got; the police officers Vanessa Bryant has every right to sue; the merits of “cancel culture” regarding almost-Teen Vogue EIC Alexi McCammond; the latest updates in the trial of Derek Chauvin; and who exactly owns Saweetie’s Bentley now? With all the traumatic headlines we’re forced to see, roles we have to take on in the workplace, and the work we do for the culture, sometimes our own mental health takes a back seat. That’s got to stop. No more stigma. No more shame. On today’s episode we sit down with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford - licensed psychologist, speaker and the host of the wildly popular podcast Therapy for Black Girls - to discuss the merits and myths of seeking the mental and emotional help we need. Our docket also includes updates in the trial of Derek Chauvin, the case of the Black police officer who was fired for using the n-word, and what officials are ruling in the case against Breonna Taylor’s boyfriend. Plus, Eboni and Dustin’s take on Meghan and Harry’s audience with the Queen... Oprah. It’s never too late for justice to be served and that’s why we’re diving deep into the murders of the Honorable Malcolm X and Black Panther Chairman Fred Hampton this week. We’re looking into the details and legal implications surrounding their assassinations in the 1960s. We’re also looking into the new evidence that has recently come to light in both cases and what we can do today, in 2021 to help get justice for these revolutionaries. And don’t forget our diverse docket this week, covering everything from the Ohio mom who was arrested for leaving her children home to go to work, to Tiger Woods most recent car crash (c’mon Tiger!), to the latest updates on T.I. and Tiny’s sexual allegations, and Derek Chauvin’s trial which is set to begin next week. And we’re getting to the nitty and the gritty of it on this episode of Holding Court with Jimmy Dennis who was exonerated after spending 25 years on death row for a crime he didn’t commit. We’ve also got some insight into what just happened to “Central Park Karen” Amy Cooper’s misdemeanor charge (you won’t like it), who’s suing R&B darling H.E.R. for copyright infringement, Kim and Kanye’s pending divorce and how those assets will split, and the Powerball winner from North Carolina whose ex is now suing her! Coming off of an eventful Valentine’s Day weekend, we are getting down to the business of the money whether it’s who's handling Britney Spears’ estate; Virginia’s decision to abolish the death penalty due in part to the high cost of state executions; how Kevin Hart got got for over $1 million; Halle Berry’s steeeeeep child support payments; or the measly $4.5 million being offered to the family of murdered Louisiana entrepreneur, Alton Sterling - we’ve got some insight for you. We also dive a bit deeper into the case of Alton Sterling with Louisiana State Representative and Eboni’s longtime friend, Ted James. Mr. James lends his expertise and insight as a political leader into the pros and cons of settlements in criminal cases. We are absolutely positively over 1) that wack sauce, anticlimactic Super Bowl (half-time show and all), 2) this Tri-State area snow, and 3) people who try to get over in the courtroom. This week we’re talking about the cute moment that could’ve gone left when a Florida burglary suspect tried to sweet talk his way out of charges. Luckily, Judge Tabitha Blackmon handled it with grace, but that isn’t always the case. Don’t try to finesse in the courtroom and end up in contempt, y’all! Also on the docket this week we discuss: how the hell two Atlanta cops have their jobs back after assaulting two Black college students last year; why Kenosha accused murderer Kyle Rittenhouse may be getting arrested...again; the history of celebrity lawyer Lisa Bloom and that history's relevancy to her involvement in the T.I. and Tiny case; the very direct and sobering plea of ex-NFL player Chad Wheeler’s girlfriend to keep Wheeler behind bars for her safety; the latest in former President Trump’s second impeachment trial (the only President ever to be impeached twice); and all the ways the walls are closing in on R. Kelly - namely his longtime associate pleading guilty to bribery of a witness. Whew. It’s a lot but get into it. It’s Super Bowl week and we’re betting on Black, as in always bet on the Black quarterback...shout-out to Patrick Mahomes, Cam Newton, Russell Wilson, Colin Kaepernick, Donovan McNabb, Steve McNair and Doug Williams! But sadly the NFL continues to fumble on its handling of player misconduct and violent criminal assault of women. We get into the nitty gritty of the case of former Seattle Seahawks player Chad Wheeler who is charged with brutally beating his girlfriend and the NFL’s deficient response in this matter and in the past. Also on the Docket this week: Updates on how the George Floyd case will be prosecuted; reality television couple T.I. and Tiny have found themselves in hot water with myriad sexual coercion allegations amongst other things; and Robinhood, the stock trading app is being accused of robbing the poor to feed the rich following their decision to limit trades last week…What. Click here to find a Black bookseller near you. On the Docket this week, Kanye’s Yeezy fashion brand sues a summer intern for posts on Instagram. And speaking of social media, we discuss the audacity of the Trump fueled mob boasting of their crimes in posts and online video related to the Capitol insurrection January 6th. So far charges are minor and more serious are likely to come. But will there also be accountability from within the Congressional ranks and Capitol Police for complicity or accessory to these crimes? ProPublica reported that Black Capitol Police warned about racist officers in their midst for years prior to the Jan. 6th insurrection. And The Washington Post reports that court documents reveal self-styled (and White) militia members planned on storming the U.S. Capitol days in advance of the Jan. 6th attack. New episodes of Holding Court return January 13th , but we need to sidebar for a minute about what happened this week.... It is the day after Black Americans helped the Democrats take back control of the Senate by winning both Senate seats in Georgia including the election of Rev. Raphael Warnock as the first Black Senator elected from that former slaveholder state. It is the day after the United States Congress, despite a violent insurrection by a mob of Trump loyalists, confirmed the electoral victory of Joe Biden as the next President of the United States, and the historic election of the first Black Woman as Vice President, Kamala Harris. So I wanted to connect with you today dear listeners and rejoice that today is a new day even while the work today and everyday from now on continues to make law & order mean justice for everyone not just the privileged. Flashback to the first viral video of a brutal police encounter with a Black man when Rodney King was beaten in 1991, and the police officers who beat him were tried and acquitted in 1992, then LA and the world cried no more! And yet it happened again and again. Then in 2020, police brutally knelt on the neck of George Floyd until he took his last breath, and Minneapolis and the world cried no more...again. The outcry galvanized today by Black Lives Matter faces familiar narratives from leaders and media that contribute to the devaluation of a human life. Election day has passed, but we’re still just beginning the work to fix our democracy and build a more equitable America. Eboni and Dustin discuss the moment including the coveted Black male swing vote, and WTF was up with Lil Wayne, Ice Cube, 50 Cent and Kodak Black co-sign of Trump? Legal headlines on The Docket this week include Mel B and Eddie Murphy child support case, the latest on Dr. Dre and Nicole Young’s divorce case, and the shocking lawsuit by a Louisville police officer who killed Breonna Taylor. Special guest US Rep. Cedric Richmond of Louisiana's 2nd Congressional District joins the conversation to clarify 2018 Jobs and Justice Bill legislation introduced from the Congressional Black Caucus versus recent proposals from the Trump Administration’s Platinum Plan and Ice Cube’s Contract with Black America. Congressman Richmond also drops knowledge about lesser known positive programs of the infamous 1994 Crime Bill , including authorization for “ pattern or practice ” investigations for police misconduct and grants for preventing violence against women . And Eboni shares a personal story about how the judicial system needs more “ pretrial diversion programs ” for giving young people a second chance rather than a criminal record. Follow Eboni K. I’m Eboni K. Williams , an attorney, TV news anchor, and former public defense attorney. I was raised by a single mother. We were poor, we struggled but we strived and she taught me, inspired me and instilled in me a sense of justice through perseverance, through knowledge! I worked and was accepted to college at 16, then I went to law school. Now I want to teach, to inspire. I believe we are a nation of laws, but the system is rigged and we must work to restore the promise of justice for all. This show isn’t about the law as much as it’s about how the law impacts our lives, and what we need to know to protect and empower ourselves. And one more thing, I’ve got the most amazing, smart, sexy co-host Dustin Ross . Y’all know him from The Friend Zone . On this show we’re going to get real, get informed, get going and of course have a little fun along the way. Come join us and let’s hold court! “It makes no sense, it doesn’t fit, you must acquit” - Johnny Cochran clip courtesy CNN . “ You go down there looking for justice, that’s what you find, ‘just us.’” - Richard Pryor clip courtesy Rhino Entertainment / Warner Music.
