An update from Hana
When we last heard from Hana Albaioumy, she was faced with an agonizing decision. She was contemplating what it would take to flee the ongoing Israeli assault on Gaza. The only way for her to evacuate Gaza was by crossing the border with Egypt, but it would cost a lot of money, as much as $5,000 a person. It was hard to imagine spending that much. Hana had worked hard her whole life to help her family climb out of poverty. She’d succeeded and created a career for herself at an international humanitarian organization. Her efforts brought her enough money to leave Gaza with her husband, but she’d still have to start from scratch. Now she’s doing just that. Hana and her husband left for Cairo in April, but they couldn’t afford to bring the rest of their family with them. Before she fled, she’d imagined that leaving Gaza would at least help her rest easier. It had been so long since she’d even had decent food. But now that she and her husband are in Cairo, they’re isolated. They have no idea what’s next. And Hana still can’t manage to keep food down. In this update, we’ll hear from Hana about what it was like to say goodbye to her family, how she’s coping with the violence in Gaza from afar, and the one fleeting moment when she felt like her old self, from before the war began. You used to be so pretty
Growing up, Haein Shim was taught that if she wanted to succeed, she needed to change her appearance. Shim was raised in South Korea, where a competitive job market and booming beauty industry combined to make careful beauty maintenance all but mandatory for gainful employment. By the time she was a young adult, she was spending hours a day and hundreds of dollars a month on makeup and clothes, until one day her friend asked, “Why do we spend so much money on our appearance?” That question upended Shim’s family, career and sense of self. It led her to join a movement called Escape the Corset, calling for an end to strict beauty standards. In this episode, we also speak to NPR’s Elise Hu, who spent years reporting on the rise of the K-beauty and how it has impacted Korea’s economy and gender politics. Her book on the subject, “Flawless: Lessons in Looks and Culture From the K-Beauty Capital,” examines how women like Haein Shim are changing the face of beauty in Korea.

Coach Schmo
The Madison College Esports team hasn’t been around for very long, and they might not have the most experience, but they’ve always had one advantage over the other teams out there: Coach Schmo. Back in the summer of 2020, the community college was looking to dive head first into the world of competitive video games. The school’s athletics department turned to IT engineer Joe Hanson for help, asking him to take on the mantle of head coach and build the team from the ground up. They had no facilities, no players… and no real plan for compensating coaches. When the reality of the task ahead first hit him? “It was instantly like, ‘Oh God, what did I just do?’ Like almost instant remorse,” Hanson said. This week, TIU gets an introduction to the world of esports through Coach Hanson (or “Schmo,” as the team calls him). He and his players share how their ragtag group of gamers became the Madison College Wolfpack and how, in the midst of the pandemic, they found real connection in this new community. A community that meant a lot for players like current assistant coach Paisley Bennet, who was one of the team’s first recruits. “I could say like half these people are more like family now,” she said. For Paisley, the space that Joe and the team created for students like her was about more than just wins and losses: “Whatever we needed, they were still there. Chasing hippos
