Arkells frontman and now author Max Kerman joins the show to speak about his new book Try Hard: Creative Work in Progress . Jann asks Max about his creative process, the importance of persistence in the arts, and how to navigate the music industry. Max and Jann reflect on true artistic enthusiasm and positivity in creative pursuits, as well as the importance of networking and asking for opportunities. Max also touches on the intricate balance between the creativity and the financial aspects of being an artist, the challenges of navigating social media authentically, and the importance of community engagement. He reflects on the future of music as artists age, the significance of self-reflection, and the impact of their songs on fans. More About Max Kerman and Try Hard: Max Kerman is the frontman of the multiplatinum, award-winning touring band Arkells. Try Hard is his first book. Let’s say you see a familiar musician from a globe-trotting, touring band hanging out at your local coffee shop, reading the newspaper and typing away on his laptop. This doesn’t look like a musician at work. He seems approachable enough, so you ask him what exactly he does all day. With a grin on his face, he admits the job might not be what you think. So you take a seat, and ask him every question you’ve ever had about how it all works: the nuts and bolts of writing a song, preparing for a show, marketing a band, and the day-to-day business of a creative life. With each answer—none of it about talent—you realize this musician is a bit of a…try hard. And the mystery of being a creative person isn’t actually mysterious at all: it’s just exploring ideas with an enthusiastic and determined curiosity. Over and over. Max is that musician in the coffee shop, and this is what reading Try Hard feels like: one-of-a- kind tales from a dynamic frontman, and a companion to your own creative work in progress. With a brick-by-brick attitude, Max explores his own growth in the craft of storytelling and performance, the pleasure to be found in collaboration, and the creative spirit required in sharing your art. *Photo by Nathan Nash* Buy Try Hard: Creative Work in Progress https://www.arkellsmusic.com/ Fountain Tire Sales: Until April 26th, get up to 25% off instantly plus up to $120 off a set of four select Goodyear tires with a mail in rebate. Dear friend and broadcasting icon Marilyn Denis joins the show this week! She shares her journey through broadcasting, family life, and the evolution of media. She reflects on the joys of Christmas with her family, the challenges of building a home, and the sacrifices she has made throughout her career. The discussion also touches on the impact of social media on broadcasting, the challenges posed by AI and technology, and the impact of scams on public figures. The conversation also touches on celebrity encounters and the balance between privacy and public life. More about Marilyn Denis: In 2023, Marilyn announced she would bid adieu as host of the popular Canadian Screen Award-winning series THE MARILYN DENIS SHOW, following 13 incredible seasons and a 34-year career of daily daytime television. Formerly co-host of Roger & Marilyn, the veteran radio broadcaster now hosts Marilyn Denis and Jamar, weekday mornings on Toronto’s #1-ranked radio station CHUM 104.5. A definite trailblazer, Edmonton-born Marilyn became the first female DJ at KRPL in Moscow, Idaho. After chatting with her for a few brief minutes, Roger immediately remarked, “I think we’ve found the right one.” Marilyn has always balanced her dynamic radio career with her candid television presence. She first began her career in television by reporting on sports, weather, and entertainment at CFCN-TV (CTV Calgary) and working as a freelance reporter for TSN. Marilyn also shared hosting duties on Bravo!'s Gemini Award-winning concert series LIVE AT THE REHEARSAL HALL and was host of the popular daily show CITYLINE for nearly 20 years. A triple Gemini Award-winner (including back-to-back Viewers Choice Awards), Marilyn received The Rosalie Award, honouring Canadian women who have paved the way for others in radio broadcasting in 2006. Marilyn is the recipient of the Allan Waters Broadcast Lifetime Achievement Award, which was awarded at the 2017 Canadian Music and Broadcast Industry Awards;_ _listed as one of Canada’s Most Powerful Women: Top 100 by WXN_;_ _selected as the University of Idaho’s (where Marilyn studied broadcasting) 2017 Commencement Speaker and Honorary Degree recipient. We have one helluva guest for you this week! Jann Arden, Caitlin Green and Sarah Burke welcome television host and best-selling author Mary Jo Eustace. Jann and MJ begin with their origin story, the evolution of their careers, and the challenges and triumphs of aging. They discuss the impact of personal experiences in the public eye, like divorce and public scrutiny, and how they have transformed pain into empowerment. They also discuss the pursuit of purpose in the later stages of life, the excitement of participating in reality TV, the importance of connection and empathy, and the complexities of modern dating. More About Mary Jo Eustace: Mary Jo Eustace is an award winning TV host, a best-selling author and trained chef, who has cooked her way through 800 episodes of lifestyle programming in the US and Canada. Tabloid fodder for two decades via a high profile divorce, she has utilized her notoriety globally to create multiple platforms for personal empowerment. Her podcast Senior Bitches charts internationally, highlighting women over 55 who are changing the landscape around conventional aging. A fierce advocate of anti-agism, Mary Jo roams the planet, connecting with connectors, celebrities and characters who share their secrets to a life well lived. Her new show Day Trippin for PBS will commence filming in early 2025. MJ became a household name in Canada in the late ’90s when hosting more than 600 episodes of the cult TV cooking show What’s for Dinner with her co-host, the late Ken Kostick. Later entangled in a tabloid tempest — with her then-husband Dean McDermott and Tori Spelling — she managed to always keep her humour intact and strip-mined her misery for others’ benefit in the funny, poignant survival guide, Divorce Sucks: What to Do When Irreconcilable Differences, Lawyer Fees, and Your Ex’s Hollywood Wife Make You Miserable. MJ is funny and candid about her own fears (and joys) of getting older, and will offer a no-holds-barred look at embracing the next chapter with honesty, humor, and a healthy dose of self-discovery. As a television host, author, and podcast personality, she has discussed topics like divorce, single parenting, and reinvention, resonating with audiences by offering a mix of wit, honesty, and resilience in navigating tough moments. Her openness about her journey has made her a voice of empowerment for those facing similar struggles. Jann and Sarah are eager to hear about Caitlin's experience at the premiere for 'I Am: Celine Dion.' The new documentary features the Canadian icon as she shares her health struggles in dedication to her fans. The conversation then shifts to Justin Timberlake's recent DUI arrest and the controversy surrounding his behaviour. This week’s episode is brought to you by the home and auto insurance brand Canadians trust most, Intact Insurance. Guest Catherine Legge joins for half the show; an award-winning filmmaker and journalist who previews her new film and podcast, 'The Murder That Never Happened.' The podcast begins with a wrongful conviction case in Louisiana and explores the flaws in the justice system. Legge wants to explore the prevalence of wrongful convictions in the 90s, before the introduction of DNA evidence. She highlights how many other cases there are in both Canada and the USA. More about the film & podcast: From the creator of THE UNSOLVED MURDER OF BEVERLY LYNN SMITH and MET WHILE INCARCERATED/FROM PRISON WITH LOVE , this psychological thriller documentary unfolds as a courtroom drama beginning in 1993. Against the backdrop of peak crime in America, a death triggers a Louisiana town into what’s called a moral panic. Witness by witness, a community turns a man into a monster, framing him for a horrific crime and sentencing him to death. In a twist that will play out in the headlines this fall (2024) the witnesses reappear in court 30 years later. Now, their testimony exposes what’s been covered up for decades - the murder never happened. But one still might. After decades on death row, this wronged man will expose the worst of the justice system, while fighting for his freedom. And it’s an inconvenient time to be innocent as Louisiana resumes executions after a near 20 year blink on an eye-for-an-eye. The world is watching. Many powerful people don’t want the truth to come out. Will the horror story or the evidence prevail this time? This documentary goes beyond the WHAT to the WHY linking this outrageous wrongful conviction to a dozen others through a lens of moral panic including the CENTRAL PARK 5 and WEST MEMPHIS 3 cases. The 90's archive meticulously frames the fear; news media, the state (prosecutors and police), and political leaders who propped up an industry of fraudulent forensics that justice gatekeepers fed to juries ravenous for definitive proof. This mob justice is still playing out across death rows today. It’s time to call a generation raised on true crime to go beyond the hype and take their place as purveyors of justice. There’s still time to do the right thing. For updates, follow along on instagram: @themurderthatneverhappened

Ziya Tong returns to the show this week! In case you're not familiar, she is an award-winning author and broadcaster, best known for her work with Discovery’s flagship science show, Daily Planet , and NOVA ScienceNow on PBS. She is the author of the best-selling book The Reality Bubble , which was shortlisted for Canada’s most prestigious non-fiction literary prize, and won the Lane Anderson Award for best science writing. Ziya served as the Vice Chair of WWF Canada and currently serves as a trustee of WWF International. Ziya co-directed a new documentary called Plastic People: The Hidden Crisis of Microplastics with Ben Addelman, and she stars alongside Executive Producer Rick Smith. "We live in a time where some of our greatest threats are invisible. Like the climate crisis, microplastic pollution cannot be: it spans the globe, chokes up rivers and animals, and insidiously infiltrates the human body. As a science journalist and author, I have been reporting on the threat of plastic for almost two decades and believe that now more than ever, we need to reveal the connection between planetary health and human health, which is why I’ve put my own body on the line for the “Plastic People” project. As part of my journey, I will test my own home, my own food, and even my own feces for microplastics. This week is a real mish-mash! Jann Arden, Caitlin Green, and Sarah Burke start the episode by discussing the feedback from last week’s episode on standing up for yourself. Then, they cover everything from the benefits of eating peanut butter, and the history of Botox to the changing landscape of streaming and its impact on music consumption. Jann welcomes Caitlin back this week with questions about Will's modelling career, she asks Sarah about a first date, and welcomes a very special guest; award-winning journalist and New York Times bestselling author, Naomi Klein. Naomi is a syndicated columnist and the international bestselling author behind a new book she calls Doppelganger: A Trip into the Mirror World. From her website : It’s for anyone who has lost hours down an internet rabbit hole, who wonders why our politics has become so fatally warped, and who wants a way out of our collective vertigo and back to fighting for what really matters. Braiding together elements of tragicomic memoir, chilling political reportage, and cobweb-clearing cultural analysis, Naomi Klein dives deep into what she calls the Mirror World—our destabilized present rife with doubles and confusion, where far-right movements playact solidarity with the working class, AI-generated content blurs the line between genuine and spurious, New Age wellness entrepreneurs turned anti-vaxxers further scramble our familiar political allegiances, and so many of us project our own carefully curated digital doubles out into the social media sphere.
