Rusty’s homework is always late….err sorry that’s an old one. Award winning journo Paul Gover from Race News ( https://www.race.news/ ) joins us for a state of the Motorsport nation…the world really. Lando Norris won’t give it up easily but PG reckons his McLaren teammate and series leader Oscar Piastri is the better driver for the F1 World Title fight. The Webber effect: how Mark can make a difference while Oscar treads new ground with the eyes of the world watching on. Why the FIA should do some navel gazing right now even though the organisation has a history of not worrying about what the troops or constituents think. And the hunt for a new Supercars CEO - the kind of credentials needed for the top job and the qualities the candidate should bring to the table. We also get Craillsy’s thoughts on future events at Mount Panorama and a few of the headlines in world Motorsport. Can Liam Lawson get out of a funk, why the winner’s list in Supercars might hit double figures this year, and the blue the F1 TV director made as Oscar Piastri took the win in Bahrain. Oh and we’ve listened to your requests to be able to ‘watch’ some of the Rusty’s Garage episodes too. He is a great leader and Steve talks about teamwork being a cornerstone of success. The rise of Tasman Motorsport and the some of the drivers on its incredible roll call including Tony Kanaan and Helio Castro Neves, who are like family to the Hornes. The importance of timing and knowing when to wave the chequered flag even when they’d worked so passionately putting their heart and soul into Tasman. Coming back to New Zealand and working in Super Tourers, his friendship with Neil Crompton and chairing the Supercars Commission. Plus his determination to help the next generation of Kiwi racers on the pathway through his involvement in the Tony Quinn Foundation. Sitting in an aircraft hangar and recounting awesome stories with one of the most respected Team Owners in Motorsport. We’ve wanted to do this one for a while and we’re so glad Steve Horne agreed to come on. How he went from watching the New Zealand Grand Prix as a youngster to working in some of the biggest pit lanes on the planet! Leaving home with an Accounting qualification to work in racing in the UK. Meeting his wife Christine and taking a gamble on the US. Guiding Bobby Rahal to a memorable Indy 500 win, Jim Trueman’s influence and galvanizing Truesports team of 100 staff to proudly make their own cars. Plus the little known story of Ferrari’s Indycar. How Steve lead the project and meeting Enzo. This is a captivating convo and because Steve typically flies under the radar (not literally) he hasn’t shared them all that often. There’s two guests for this special Australian Grand Prix-view. First up Guenther Steiner. He’s back on Rusty’s Garage ahead of the F1 season opener. We get Guenther’s observations of the talented rookies lining up on grid this year and how Oscar Piastri might just break the Aussie podium drought at home. How difficult it is to manage two No. 1 drivers….will Zak Brown end up with a few more greys in 2025? Plus the hype around Hamilton. There’s so much excitement about Lewis and Ferrari. Does Steiner think Formula 1’s most famous team can give the 7-time World Champion what he needs for more success? And after the break Rusty chats to Australian Grand Prix CEO Travis Auld at Albert Park. What’s new for ‘25 now it’s back to round 1 on the calendar? How the fans will get to experience a very special celebration IF we all do the right thing. There’s a great vibe in Melbourne. It feels like F1 has taken over the city with reminders of the race on billboards everywhere! How, like the Australian Tennis Open, this event has become a darling in the Victorian major event offering and the ROI it’s now giving tax payers. Don’t worry Russell got even. It’s a great story! Fitting that we’re releasing this ep on the eve of a new Formula One season. Why he’s loving the challenge and how excited he is about taking it to Bathurst. We also reflect on rivals, some broader observations of Speedway in Australia and his deep passion for helping people to really experience the sport, not just take it in on the hill. Robbie is forthright in this convo and immensely proud of racing speedway in our corner of the world. What the future holds after spending much of his life on the road and doing 50 plus shows a year. An Aussie speedway star with a seriously impressive record. We’ve been wanting to get Robbie Farr on the pod for a while and he doesn’t disappoint. The influence of family (he started going to oval tracks like the Sydney Showground and Liverpool when he was just weeks old) and how he harnessed a bit of a ‘wild’ approach in his early years to become the complete package. Is the story of fudging birth dates to get a racing license an urban myth? How karting in his teens, when Mark Webber and Craig Lowndes were starting out, nearly lead to Formula Ford and a potential circuit racing path. The gripping yarn of driving a midget (speedcar) and learning that his car owner had saved his Mum’s life years earlier! And reflections of some of the teams he’s raced for in iconic cars that will bring memories for Speedway fans flooding back. Strap in and enjoy the ride. ‘Chucky’ is back but this time he’s on the pod to talk about winning one of the biggest races in the world! It was a dominant performance rarely seen at Dakar as the Aussie lead from start to finish. The home grown influence on the technical side Daniel pushed for that helped significantly and you’ll get a sense of how much was riding on his shoulders over the past few months. What the nerves were like over the final 60k stage and how sweet it was to come back from the injuries of recent years to summit this Everest of Motorsport….so to speak. The final lap of a rare 3-parter and he saves some cracking yarns for it. How the so called Piranha Club move to promote Michael Schumacher to Benetton came at his expense. The fallout from that and a 3am phone call from Eddie Jordan to get Roberto to drive for him. Let’s just say he hung up on him a few times. Finding a way to pre-qualify for minnow teams when on paper they were no chance and the incredible reception from pitlane when he did as well as sliding doors moments that seemed like devine intervention. And how Indycar welcomed Roberto back when his time in F1 came to an end adding emotional victories in the US to his CV. It’s the 2nd of 3 parts of a fascinating story by a great story teller! Roberto continues his gripping recollections of the road to success and while it didn’t yield world championships he scored podiums in F1, special places in the record books along with wins in Indycar. You’ll get a sense of his relentless determination when most of us would give up trying. And he garnered the respect of legendary team owners and engineers who sought his valuable input as they developed ground breaking motor racing innovations - like Ferrari’s game changing semi automatic gearbox in the late 80s. It doesn’t matter how good the car is if the driver can’t get comfortable behind the wheel they’ll never perform at their best! Vaughan Cartright has been making world class, bespoke race seat solutions for some of the biggest names in Motorsport for decades. And he looks after drivers all round the world and in all sorts of categories. It was the beginning of a career that would take him all over the world, to the USA, Australia to work on Supercars with Wayne Gardner Racing and eventually Formula 1. When was the last time you stopped to check on your mates? Motorsport is full of driven and seemingly confident people, on both sides of the pit wall, but that doesn’t make them immune to mental health struggles. TV presenter Barry Du Bois loves his bikes. He’s currently restoring a cool ute too. And while we talk about that in this episode he has an important story to share, the speed humps he’s had to tackle and how he came out the other side. Baz is now a power of positivity and a passionate advocate for R U OK? Rusty and the team at LiSTNR are proud to support the R U OK initiative and while this interview is confronting at times it’s about starting a conversation around mental health. It’s our first chance to talk to Shane van Gisbergen since his big switch from Supercars to NASCAR, and it’s clear he’s loving this new chapter immensely. Thank you to everyone who responded on social media to our call for questions, including those who put their best radio voices on and sent in audio. While we couldn’t get to all your questions in the time Trackhouse Racing kindly gave us, we covered most of the recurring themes. Shane provides great insights on how wild the cars feel on ovals, drifting and burnouts in a NASCAR, his potential plans for more Sprintcar racing, the advice he's received from legends on both sides of the pond, and whether he would consider an Indy 500 wildcard like Kyle Larson did this year. Although we didn’t discuss his now-trademark celebration of kicking a footy into the crowd, we love how SVG is bringing some Kiwi rugby roots to the United States and making his mark! What took us so long? Supercars star Chaz Mostert joins us for a Darwin debrief. Ricky Bobby had Shake n Bake, but Chaz pulled off the ‘Cheeseburger Chase’ at Hidden Valley, making a string of epic passes to turn a tough weekend around. He shares what Walkinshaw Andretti United needs and the good things already in their arsenal. We also look ahead to the next round at Townsville, discuss reuniting with Lee Holdsworth for the enduros, and get Chaz's thoughts on his fast and funny new teammate, Ryan Wood. But it's not all about Supercars. We delve into the wild modifications he's made to his first car (which he still has), his joy in fatherhood, racing in GT3, and owning a team in GT4. Plus, we check in on his #nosocialhate initiative, a reminder for all of us to play nice online. Four-time Mr. Motocross title winner Craig Dack was recently inducted into the Australian Motorsport Hall of Fame, prompting Rusty to realise that a chat with ‘Dacka’ was long overdue. The result is an awesome episode, not just for Supercross and Motocross fans. From watching the legendary Stephen Gall (who is coming on the pod in the next few months) at Amaroo Park and trying to do monos like him on his BMX bike, to cutting laps on his first motorbike around the backyard on Christmas Day, there was no turning back from that moment. We reminisce about the catchphrase “Dack Attack” and the journalist who started it, how surreal it felt to race at famous venues in the United States, and how his success extended beyond bike racing. There was the time his physio shut down a plan to go riding with an AFL superstar, and how the Supercross Masters promoter was worried his headline act was injured in an aerobics TV show promo gone wrong. We also discuss a little-known plan by one of the greats of Australian Touring Car Racing that very nearly saw Craig switch to four wheels. After winning numerous titles in Australia, conquering New Zealand, and proudly wearing the green and gold while racing overseas, Dacka decided to stop competing in the early '90s to start his own team. This venture has enjoyed just as much success and continues to thrive. Managing his own deals as a rider helped him navigate the corporate sponsorship landscape. The depth and strength of these relationships led CDR to celebrate a 30-year milestone with Yamaha in 2023. Decades-long partnerships like this are incredibly rare in the world of sport today. We also discuss his time working with a young and fiercely determined Chad Reed when he took on the US, developing people management skills for young riders with differing personalities, and the changes he's witnessed through the eras. Dack realized early on that he didn't want to turn them into carbon copies. Additionally, we touch on some special bikes he's kept along the way that bookend his riding career and his thoughts on the future. The two-time Australian Rally Champion who grew up in a sporting family and thrives on competition! Rob Herridge's early life around the family farm in Western Australia served as his apprenticeship for what he now calls himself—a "pretend-gineer." Though he may lack a formal qualification, the resourcefulness and precision he learned were perfect skills for motorsport preparation. Herridge was a late bloomer to rallying but not to speed sports. You'll hear about how he blocked pain through sheer determination to beat a record in barefoot waterskiing before channeling that thirst for success into power boating. Additionally, he learned a brutal lesson from his uncle as a teenager on what it takes to win in his other pastime, clay target shooting! Rob’s been a commentator over the years (can you tell?), and he loves a good story, so we're only just shifting into second gear in this chat! Discover how Herridge jumped into rallying on a whim, convinced he was world champion material on the very first transport stage! Learn about the Datsun 1600 that started it all, his near switch to Mitsubishi, and the ultimate move to Subaru, sparking a partnership that’s lasted for decades. We recorded this episode in the workshop, surrounded by cars Rob has worked on and won in. The attachment to some of them is understandable, especially when you hear the story of how Rob clinched his second Australian title before officially receiving the first. Despite a lengthy and draining court battle, he never gave up. The story of an ace engineer and team owner who has worked with the biggest and best F1 drivers. We chat the move into Touring Cars with his West Surrey Racing team at the height of an arms race in the 2-litre Super Touring era. Remember that? The late Murray Walker lent his iconic commentary to the coverage for some years and so many big name manufacturers were involved spending telephone number sized budgets to try and win! Then there’s the BMW’s they now run in the BTCC and the work required around its hybrid program. Dick is adamant about working with drivers to properly understand their feedback and how that ‘feel’ is still incredibly important in finding ways to fine tune the race car, not just relying on the data. And of course you’ll be wowed by more stories of the legends he’s worked with along the way as well as an eye on the future, what’s next for Dick Bennetts? We got permission from Pee Wee’s media manager Mark Larkham to tell this story so we twisted Larko’s arm and made it a two parter! And there is plenty in it, including why Greg is like a father figure to Larko and how he taught him to take the emotion out of the big decisions. Plus, inspiring Sam Michael to chase the F1 dream after he impressed during his time working for Pee Wee and Larko in the Formula Holden program. Why he gave Eddie Jordan a bit of a ‘tune-up’ when Sam got crook while working for Jordan F1 in the UK. And the great friendship the trio have to this day. There’s also fascinating yarns on working with Niki Lauda to come and race in Australia, the advice he gave Mark Webber and helping to establish a successful Formula Ford chassis distributorship in Australia. The accounts department at one major sponsor jokingly called him Mr Reverse Cashflow, but Pee Wee worked seriously hard to stitch together a massive deal that took Aussies like the Great Peter Brock, Larry Perkins and more to Le Mans in a Porsche! You’ll be spellbound by the stories of working with the all-time greats in a career that takes in both a golden era of 500cc racing and almost two decades of the new 4 stroke chapter, now producing some of the most competitive racing we’ve seen. And he opens up on the difficulties of ‘rolling off the throttle’ when he stopped commentating on motorcycle racing’s premier class. Rusty really should have done this pod ages ago, in the Island Media Centre after Nick hosted one of his countless Press Conferences in unmistakable Harris style. But, the time is now for you to enjoy tales from almost 50 years working around the sport. From phoning through reports and telexes to the the call he took about Eddie Lawson joining the Honda team that Wayne Gardner never knew about!
