The billionaires club has never been bigger—or richer. Here’s who’s up, who’s down and who’s off the list and why it matters more than ever. The world’s billionaires have always been rich and powerful—but never more than now. That’s particularly true in the United States, where Donald Trump was sworn in (again) as America’s billionaire-in-chief in January. This time around, he’s giving the billionaire class more control over the government than ever before. The billionaire bonanza extends beyond the U.S., however. A record 3,028 people around the globe make Forbes’ annual World’s Billionaires list this year, 247 more than last year. It’s the first time the billionaire population has crossed the 3,000 mark. They’re worth a record $16.1 trillion in all, $2 trillion more than a year ago, more than the GDP of any country in the world other than the U.S. and China. The average fortune now stands at a record $5.3 billion, up $200 million from 2024. Senior Editor Chase Peterson-Withorn, who has been editing the list for over three years, joins Breaking News Reporter Brittany Lewis to share an inside look into this year's 2025 World's Billionaires List. The effects of last summer’s rap feud between Kendrick Lamar and Drake continue to reverberate through the music industry, and the careers of its two combatants. Earlier this month, Drake made headlines for bringing a defamation lawsuit against Universal Music Group for its role in the back-and-forth, while Lamar prepares for the biggest gig of his life—headlining the halftime show at Super Bowl LIX on February 9. It's hard to imagine how the 37-year-old Lamar, who for much of his career has been seen as a critical darling with a cult-like following, would have been chosen by halftime show executive producer Jay-Z and his Roc Nation for music’s biggest stage were it not for the beef and series of diss tracks it produced. “Not Like Us,” Lamar’s anthemic takedown of hip-hop’s best-selling artist, hit more than a billion streams on Spotify in 2024 and spent a record-setting 21 consecutive weeks atop Billboard’s hot rap songs chart. Within months of becoming president in 2017, Donald Trump faced questions about the money behind his golf empire. The intrigue started with a comment from a golf writer, who claimed that Trump’s son Eric said his father got all the funding he needed out of Russia. Christine Cox, Artistic and Executive Director of BalletX, has led the company to the forefront of contemporary ballet since its founding in 2005. This season, the company brings three New York premieres to The Joyce Theater, featuring bold works by Takehiro Ueyama, Jodie Gates, and Loughlan Prior. Through Cox's innovation in the contemporary ballet space, BalletX has become a leader in pushing the boundaries of what the art form and dancers are capable of by producing 130 ballets by over 70 choreographers in under 20 years. That is an average of six per year, a feat few companies can match. Looking back at it now, that stat seems unthinkable when the modest company was established in 2005. But over the years BalletX has grown sustainably as an institution growing the ensemble of dancers from 10 to 16, providing annual salaries to dancers and becoming a fundraising powerhouse, having received a $7.4 million transformational gift this year which will allow the company to grow into a global force. After her celebrated run at Mena in Tribeca, Chef Victoria Blamey has returned to New York’s culinary scene, taking the helm at Blanca in Brooklyn—a restaurant revered for its daring tasting menu and intimate 12-seat setting. With support from Carlo Mirarchi, Blanca’s original founder, Blamey brings her inventive, globe-trotting techniques and Chilean heritage to a new chapter at the once Michelin-starred gem. Set behind Bushwick’s famed Roberta’s, Blanca offers an immersive, nearly three-hour culinary journey that pushes the boundaries of fine dining. Each course showcases Blamey’s meticulous attention to detail. The menu doesn’t reveal how much work each course entails; that the fermentation process takes days; that before the end of an evening’s service Blamey is preparing dough which needs 19 hours to process; that the spinach leaves take hours to press and wrap; there are shells to shuck; the Donabe rice pot has to be continuously stirred; and a wood oven outside needs regular attention. Beyond the kitchen, Blanca’s experience is enhanced by an extensive natural wine list and music as eclectic as the food. Executive Chef Victoria Blamey and Chef and Co-owner Carlo Mirarchi sit down with Forbes editor Maggie McGrath to discuss Blanca’s revival, their creative process, and what’s next for the iconic restaurant. Lots of rich people pour a fortune into their political careers. But no American has used politics to create as much personal wealth as Donald J. Trump. With throngs of people now willing to buy almost anything from him, including stock, regardless of the cost, he has turned his political fame into billions. However, Trump could need cash fast. He currently has an estimated $413 million of liquid assets on his balance sheet after selling a hotel in D.C. and a golf course in New York. But a New York judge, who found that the billionaire exaggerated his net worth in acquiring both properties, ruled that he must pay back profits from both deals, accounting for some of the $566 million that he owes in legal liabilities. With San Diego-based Equip, Kristina Saffran and Erin Parks have convinced health insurers from UnitedHealthcare to Aetna to pay for research-backed treatment for thousands of patients struggling with eating disorders. A decade after recovering from anorexia, Saffran started a company to help make this same type of therapy more accessible by offering a single online portal through which families can treat and manage a child’s eating disorder. Equip also offers wraparound services that aren’t always offered alongside in-person therapy, with the full care team including a therapist, medical doctor, dietician and peer and parent mentors. Equip’s virtual therapy is so powerful because of a shortage of specialized therapists and in-person clinics, said Saffran’s cofounder Erin Parks, 44, a clinical psychologist who previously worked at the UC San Diego Eating Disorder Clinic. Before starting Equip, Parks treated families who had flown in from all over the country seeking care. Over the past two decades, Diddy expanded his businesses across several lifestyle categories—including the Sean John fashion and fragrance lines, a wildly successful Cîroc vodka partnership with British spirits conglomerate Diageo and founding the Revolt TV network—and over that period (before taxes and fees), he earned nearly a billion dollars. In 2019, Forbes estimated Combs’ personal wealth at $740 million. Both Combs and his team later claimed that he was a billionaire, despite offering no documentation to back up the claim. Forbes now conservatively estimates he is worth $400 million. Given the severity of those civil cases and a looming federal investigation reportedly into human trafficking, Combs now faces an existential threat to his freedom and his fortune. Despite what the Farm Bill states, there is still plenty of debate about whether hemp-derived THC products are legal at the federal level. That’s because several things are true all at once: hemp-derived cannabinoids, including delta-9 THC, delta-8 THC (a less potent compound that is affectionately called “weed lite” or “decaf kush”) and others, are legal under the Farm Bill if those compounds are found naturally in the plant, meaning if a company takes a heap of hemp and extracts THC, that oil is legal if it contains 0.3% THC or less. In an opinion from the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in 2022, judges ruled that cannabinoids derived from hemp are legal under the Farm Bill, even if the substances have psychoactive properties. The 2024 Midas List features 13 women investors, matching 2021’s record number. They include No. 99 Annabelle Yu Long, a China-based newcomer at BAI Capital, and No. 86 Annie Lamont, Connecticut’s First Lady and cofounder of Oak HC/FT, appearing for the fifth time, but her first in nine years. A data-driven ranking, the Midas List is produced annually from a combination of public data sources and the submissions of hundreds of investment partners across dozens of firms. To qualify, investors are ranked by portfolio companies that have gone public or been acquired for at least $200 million in the past five years, or that have at least doubled their private valuation to $400 million or more over the same period. Forbes and TrueBridge allow firms to share credit for a deal between up to two investors, and put a premium on liquid exits over unrealized returns. Early stage investors who deliver large multiples on money invested, and later-stage investors who return large sums of cash, can both make the list. Top Midas investors typically achieve both, across a dozen or more eligible investments. It was a record-breaking year for these queens of capitalism, as their combined fortunes soared by nearly one-fourth to $154 billion and the minimum to make the list jumped more than 35%. The country’s most successful women have found dozens of ways to prosper. Nearly three-fourths of the 100 women on the list started or confounded a company, while 22 are chief executives or co-chief executives. A healthy stock market helped push the combined fortunes of members of Forbes’ tenth annual list of America’s Richest Self-Made Women to a record $154 billion, up nearly 25% from last year. The minimum to qualify rose to $300 million, up from $225 million last year, the highest since Forbes started tracking the top 100 in 2020. Seventy-three members are richer than they were in 2023, while just ten saw their fortunes fall. Sanctions after the invasion of Ukraine sent tanker values soaring, boosting the fortunes of these Greek maritime moguls to record highs and minting at least seven new 10-figure fortunes. Forbes estimates there are now at least 12 shipping billionaires in Greece, more than at any other time in history. Seven of them are making their debut in Forbes’ billionaire ranks. They are worth a collective $32 billion—the equivalent of roughly 12% of the country’s gross domestic product. These tycoons are the latest in a line of swashbuckling pioneers hailing back to iconic figures like Aristotle Onassis and Stavros Niarchos, who launched the global oil tanker trade after World War II and became famous for their glamorous marriages and lifestyles. In 2023, female-owned venture capital firms received just 3% of the total $107 billion raised across venture firms worldwide, up from 2% in 2022. It is within this environment that Renata Quintini, cofounder and managing director of Renegade Partners, is announcing the close of a fresh $128 million in dry powder. The close of Fund II brings her firm’s total assets under management to $228 million, a size Quintini believes is a “Goldilocks” fit for the work she and cofounder Roseanne Wincek want to do. “If you’re managing a billion dollars, the math works against you,” she said during a sitdown interview at the Forbes studio. “At our fund size, we can write checks for $10 million, or in some cases have single digit percentage ownership that makes sense for our fund math… I’d much rather own a bite of a watermelon than the whole grape. Let’s optimize for opportunities to say yes to great founders.” Quintini also dished on what aspiring founders—of companies and venture firms alike—need to know about operating in 2024. Hiring managers have long used the reputation of a new college graduate’s alma mater as an indicator of an applicant’s ability and expected job performance. Elite national consulting, banking and investment firms focused their recruiting on the Ivy League and a handful of the other most selective schools. Big companies looked more widely, but still often favored a limited number of highly ranked universities. Regional firms would tap graduates of schools with the best reputations in their geographic area. Rhino Onward International, or ROI as it called itself, launched in 2022 with some big promises. The renewables development firm claimed that its “proprietary process and technology” put it in position “to assume the leading role in Green Hydrogen production.” The company said it was building a green hydrogen plant in Arizona that would be worth about $530 million within 5 years, according to marketing materials it shared with investors. ROI raised $31 million from over 200 investors but apparently only invested $200,000 in the business; the firm’s promoters Paul Croft and J.D. Frost diverted the rest of the investors’ money to themselves and entities they control, according to an investor lawsuit filed in Illinois last month, which cited bank records obtained through subpoenas. Beginning in 2021 until last year, Croft, a 42-year-old entrepreneur living in Chicago, and Frost, a 40-year-old accountant based in Chattanooga, Tennessee, raised approximately $46 million from a series of phony renewables investment schemes, which the pair used to live extravagantly, pay employees at their tax advisory business, pay down short-term loans and even lend money to embattled professional hockey player Robin Lehner, according to allegations in lawsuits, bankruptcy filings, former investors and ex-employees of Croft’s and Frost’s businesses who spoke with Forbes on the record, and others with knowledge of the matter who spoke on the condition of anonymity in order to speak about sensitive information. The runaway success of weight loss drugs took the markets by storm last year, spurring huge stock gains for drugmakers like Novo Nordisk, which makes Wegovy and Ozempic. Most patients take them at home in weekly injections, using plastic, pen-like devices known as autoinjectors, filled with the liquid medication and fitted with a tiny needle as wide as two human hairs. As demand for the drugs soars, so does the need for those devices. That growth has now minted a new billionaire: Roger Samuelsson, the 60-year-old Swedish cofounder of Switzerland-based SHL Medical, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of autoinjectors. Forbes estimates he’s worth $3 billion, largely thanks to his 69% stake in the company he cofounded in 1989. The remaining 31% is held by Swedish private equity firm EQT—which has minted seven billionaires over the years—and Athos, the family office of the billionaire Struengmann brothers. Press-shy Samuelsson, who declined multiple requests for an interview, also enjoys fast cars (he raced in the 2016 Ferrari Challenge series) and owns the 414-foot megayacht Octopus, which he bought in 2021; the yacht was built for its first owner, Microsoft cofounder Paul Allen (d. 2018). On March 21, the roughly 70 employees of the Schuler Education Foundation, based in the affluent suburb of Lake Forest, Illinois, were summoned to an emergency all-hands meeting. Over the past two-plus decades, the nonprofit founded and funded by a former president of healthcare giant Abbott Laboratories, Jack Schuler, had spent at least $150 million counseling and tutoring more than 1,800 low-income students from Chicago and Milwaukee-area high schools to help them gain admission to elite colleges; those colleges in turn covered most (if not all) of the students’ tuition and other costs. The employees, who first had to certify they wouldn’t record anything, were let into a Zoom room where the nonprofit’s executive director Joanne Bertsch read from a script announcing that the foundation would shut down on May 24. Everyone would be let go except for a skeleton crew of seven college counselors left to support students through August. For a brief time in 2021, the affluent town of San Marino in Los Angeles County saw a dramatic decrease in residential burglaries, its most common crime. Between January and May, they dropped 80%, down to seven from 32 in the same period of 2020. For Flock Safety, which had installed AI-powered license plate readers for the San Marino Police Department in June 2020, the statistic was marketing gold. The company seized on this data, claiming its technology was key in decreasing not just burglaries, but all crimes in the town by 70%. Taking a wider lens tells a different story. Despite that initial five month drop in 2021, residential burglaries on the whole rose after Flock’s cameras were deployed. In 2019, San Marino reported 60 residential burglaries. In 2023, three years after Flock’s arrival, there were 63 — a 5% increase. Meanwhile, Part 1 crimes – more serious offenses including larceny and murder – have stayed almost completely flat: 231 in 2023, compared to 230 in 2019, the year before Flock cameras were installed. Even the town’s police chief John Incontro admits the 70% claim — still trumpeted on Flock’s website today — isn’t accurate. “I definitely need to talk to their marketing folks.” Stay Connected Forbes newsletters: https://newsletters.editorial.forbes.com Forbes on Facebook: http://fb.com/forbes Forbes Video on Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/forbes Forbes Video on Instagram: http://instagram.com/forbes More From Forbes: http://forbes.com Forbes covers the intersection of entrepreneurship, wealth, technology, business and lifestyle with a focus on people and success. The past year has been painful for the financial technology industry, with publicly traded fintech stocks languishing 50% below their late 2021 peak, even as the S&P 500 has surged to new highs. Venture capital funding for fintech startups is even more depressed–it fell more than 70% from $141 billion worldwide in 2021 to $39 billion in 2023, according to CB Insights. Both layoffs and fire sales have spread. Yet our new 2024 Fintech 50 list is packed with extraordinary entrepreneurs who have adapted and flourished in this environment. Three categories that primarily serve other businesses—Payments, Wall Street & Enterprise and Business to Business Banking–made the strongest showing, accounting for 27 of our 50 picks and seven of the 13 first-time honorees on this year’s list, our ninth annual honor roll of the most innovative private businesses in fintech. Bitcoin reached the $50,000 mark for the first time since the bullish days of 2021. Its surge comes from a five-day period where it gained 13% and represents a strong recovery from a large sell-off in mid-January when long-awaited spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETF) began to trade. During the January drop, bitcoin fell to $38,500, as it succumbed to a familiar pattern of ‘buying the rumor and selling the news’ that plagued previously anticipated events in crypto such as the April 2021 direct listing by Coinbase and the launch of cash-settled bitcoin futures ETFs in October 2021. Think of a typical billionaire and it’s likely to be someone who falls into one of two camps: founders or cofounders–like Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Amazon chairman Jeff Bezos—or heirs, like Jacqueline Mars, granddaughter of the founder of candy company Mars, maker of M&Ms and Snickers bars; and Thomas Pritzker, whose predecessors founded the Hyatt Hotels chain he runs as CEO. Roughly 69% of the nearly 760 U.S. billionaires listed by Forbes fall into the first category, while just more than 27% inherited a great fortune. Altogether nearly 97% of American billionaires land in these two groups. A third category is the rarest: those who are neither founders nor heirs. Call them hired-hand billionaires–or corporate-ladder billionaires. Forbes has found just 26 people who were hired as executives–sometimes as junior employees, sometimes as CEOs–who became billionaires. These ultra-wealthy executives work or worked at just 20 companies, nearly all of which are technology or private equity firms. Among the more notable are Apple CEO Tim Cook, JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon and Jonathan Gray, who was hired at Blackstone in 1992 fresh out of college and was named the firm’s president and Chief Operating Officer in 2018. After 27 years with Nike as his biggest sponsor, Tiger Woods confirmed Monday in a statement on X that he and the apparel giant were parting ways, ending a partnership that has paid him more than $500 million (before taxes and agents’ fees), according to Forbes estimates. The deal accounts for more than a quarter of the 48-year-old golfer’s estimated $1.8 billion in career pretax earnings—a record total for an active athlete, roughly $300 million ahead of No. 2 Cristiano Ronaldo—and dwarfs the PGA Tour-record $121 million he has made in prize money. It is also a big reason that Woods joined Forbes’ billionaires list in 2022, becoming one of only two athletes to enter the three-comma club while still active in their sports, along with NBA superstar LeBron James. (Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson are the other two athlete billionaires, but each reached the milestone long after he had retired from basketball.) Woods, who led Forbes’ list of the world’s highest-paid athletes every year from 2002 to 2011, now has an estimated net worth of $1.1 billion. Brett Knight, Forbes SportsMoney reporter joins Forbes 'Talks' to discuss the end of the Tiger Woods and Nike partnership and whats ahead for the golf superstar. In 2019, before the pandemic, 3.7% of children aged 5 to 17 were schooled primarily at home either by parents or through virtual classes, up from 2% in 1999, according to a survey by the National Center for Education Statistics, which attributes that increase in part to information technology making home instruction more feasible. The NCES doesn’t have more recent data yet, but an analysis by the Washington Post found the number of homeschooled children has surged 51% since the 2017-18 school year. Meanwhile, private school enrollment rose just 7% while public school enrollment declined 4%. The big spurt in homeschooling came during the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 school years, when virtual classes and mask mandates were widespread. Since then, as public schools have returned to (more or less) normal, homeschooling numbers have dropped some, but held on to much of their pandemic era gains. Notably, some of the students who fled public school for home during the pandemic are now enrolling in microschools. Emma Whitford, an education reporter for Forbes, joins ‘Forbes Talks’ to discuss the factors contributing to the surge in homeschooling. Engineer Ross M. Brown, who built and sold an industrial conglomerate for more than $400 million, is donating nearly all his wealth to promising mid-career chemistry and physics professors at a range of universities. Caltech announced Friday morning that engineering entrepreneur and alumnus Ross M. Brown is donating $400 million to the university to support fundamental science research. However, there’s an unusual element to the generous gift, called the Ross Brown Investigators Program: It’s designed to support mid-career physics and chemistry professors–but the academics getting the financial awards won’t be at Caltech. This is the first large gift of its kind where the recipient of the donation will turn around and give nearly all of it to faculty at other universities. “Caltech won't be eligible to receive any of the investigator awards, just because of the conflict of interest, nor will they be allowed to sit on the science advisory board. So it's really Caltech’s general interest in science itself that has led them to get to where they are,” explains Brown, who graduated from Caltech in 1956 with a degree in mechanical engineering and obtained a master's degree from the Pasadena, California university the following year. Caltech will administer the program, while an independent review board will choose eight fellows annually from more than a dozen invited universities across the country. Each chosen investigator will receive a $2 million, five-year fellowship. Caltech will administer the program until 2070, assuming sufficient returns on invested funds. Iga Świątek, Eileen Gu and Coco Gauff are the top earners for the past 12 months as tennis players continue to dominate the annual pay ranking. With Serena Williams retired and Naomi Osaka sidelined for the year as she recovered from injuries and then childbirth, the list of the world’s highest-paid female athletes has a new No. 1: 22-year-old Polish tennis star Iga Świątek, who made an estimated $23.9 million in 2023 (before taxes and agents’ fees). Since Forbes introduced the ranking in 2008, Maria Sharapova is the only other woman to have claimed the crown, reigning for eight straight years until Williams took over in 2016. Świątek’s monster year included the women’s singles title at the French Open, and four new endorsement deals, but it’s also no coincidence that she—like Osaka, Williams and Sharapova before her—plays tennis. Twelve of the world’s 20 highest-paid female athletes, and nine of the top 10, come from the sport, which offers sizable prize money and ample marketing opportunities for female athletes. Golf and soccer each have two athletes represented in this year’s top 20, with badminton, basketball, gymnastics and freestyle skiing rounding out the list with one athlete apiece. Combined, the 20 top-earning women made an estimated $226 million in 2023. That is a 13% drop from 2022’s $258 million, but the decline can be attributed almost entirely to the loss of Williams (who hauled in $41.3 million on last year’s list) and Osaka’s tumble to $15 million (from $51.1 million in 2022) amid her long layoff. Forbes SportsMoney Reporter Justin Birnbaum, joins 'Forbes Talks' to list the highest paid female athletes. If we view the economic value of college based solely on the direct outcomes of post-graduation performance, then perhaps we're evaluating the investment based on incongruent objectives and misaligned time horizons. That is to say, my career-based decisions should be based on my career goals. As such, I should choose the best course of action to increase my likelihood of achieving them. For some, that might mean a college degree; for others, perhaps not. If we only measure the value of college based on immediate value realization, then we likely ignore the long-term financial benefits that college provides, like the network. As the cost of college continues to rise, public discourse around higher education has sparked debate about whether the investment is worth it. Considering that college graduates' salaries have been outpaced by the costs of a degree, it's no wonder that consumer confidence has waned. Any other economic exchange would warrant such scrutiny, so it's essential that we view college in market terms, not just as a social chevron. But what is the economic exchange between higher ed and would-be students? Prior generations were indoctrinated with the belief that a college degree promised a "good job" and good-standing status in society. However, the democratization of technology has reduced barriers to entry and created new opportunities for budding entrepreneurs and savvy creators to subvert these traditional paths and still obtain similar benefits that would typically come with having a degree. Some even argue that these outcomes are more likely to be achieved without the debt that so many students must accrue to get the degree and realize its potential benefit. “It should cost a billion to look this good,” Beyoncé sings on “Pure/Honey” from her 2022 album, Renaissance. Given the stellar year the 42-year-old entertainer has had, money doesn’t appear to be a problem—she is now on a glidepath to becoming a billionaire, with a net worth of $800 million, Forbes estimates. In June, Beyoncé ranked No. 48 on Forbes’ annual list of the richest self-made women in America, with a net worth of $540 million. The dramatic boost to her fortune can be attributed to her substantial 2023 earnings—she banked an estimated $100 million (post-tax) from the Renaissance World Tour—as well as an adjustment to Forbes’ estimate of her music catalog and her art collection. Sources tell Forbes the singer’s catalog is now worth some $300 million. The remainder of her net worth is made up of the personal assets she shares with her billionaire husband, Jay-Z, as well as her business holdings through Parkwood Entertainment, which she founded in 2010. (Representatives for Beyoncé did not respond to Forbes’ request for comment.) One of the major drivers to the increase to Beyoncé’s net worth was her blockbuster Renaissance tour, which ran from May to October and spanned 39 cities in 17 countries. Renaissance brought in more than $579 million in revenue, making it one of the top 10 highest-grossing tours in history, according to Billboard. “She’s one of the music gods,” IAG chairman Dennis Arfa, who represents acts including Billy Joel and Metallica, tells Forbes. “The business she does, and the amount of people that she draws, that she can do a movie on her own. She can do things most can’t.” Stay Connected Forbes newsletters: https://newsletters.editorial.forbes.com Forbes on Facebook: http://fb.com/forbes Forbes Video on Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/forbes Forbes Video on Instagram: http://instagram.com/forbes More From Forbes: http://forbes.com Forbes covers the intersection of entrepreneurship, wealth, technology, business and lifestyle with a focus on people and success. In the early months of the pandemic, Michael Abramson returned home to Texas to plot his next career move. A former partner at storied venture capital firm Sequoia Capital, he'd kept a low public profile despite investments in flashy startups like beauty retailer Glossier and delivery app Rappi. Hoping to maintain that quiet approach in his next endeavor, he pinged a friend with a similar penchant for privacy, and billions of dollars to invest: WhatsApp billionaire Jan Koum. Today, with Koum’s support, Abramson quietly leads Newlands, a firm that has rapidly grown into one of the largest new funds in tech. Abramson and Koum haven’t spoken publicly about Newlands, and the firm does not appear in recent funding announcements. Its corporate website is little more than a shell. Cyrus Farivar, a senior writer for Forbes, joins ‘Forbes Talks’ to discuss Cruise robotaxis halting operations nationwide. The stunning announcement comes just two days after California regulators revoked the company’s permit statewide, finding that Cruise’s vehicles are “not safe for the public’s operation” and that the cars pose “an unreasonable risk to the public.” After ceasing operations in California on Tuesday, Cruise continued in Phoenix, Arizona, and in Austin and Houston, two of Texas’ largest cities. However, the entire robotaxi fleet nationwide has now been grounded. In its brief thread, Cruise said that the company needed to “take steps to rebuild public trust…even if it means doing things that are uncomfortable or difficult.” Earlier this month, at its peak, Cruise had a fleet of 400 robotaxis nationwide. Brad D. Smith was six years old when a plane carrying the 1970 Marshall University football team crashed a mile from his home near campus in southern West Virginia, killing all 75 people on board. His cousins rushed to aid their dying neighbors as volunteer firefighters. “I watched the flames burn outside my window,” Smith remembers. “And then I watched this community rise from the ashes.” Half a century later, the recently retired Intuit CEO’s community is waging new battles, with an opioid epidemic raging and the coal economy that once made Governor Jim Justice a billionaire on the verge of extinction. So, after 36 years away, Smith decided to take the country roads back home to West Virginia, the place he belongs—and into the President’s House at Marshall, his alma mater, which he took over in January 2022. He brought back with him a sizable fortune, accumulated over nearly four decades in business. According to Forbes’ ranking of the richest person in each state, released Thursday for the first time since 2019, he’s West Virginia’s wealthiest resident, worth $700 million. Forbes estimates that roughly half of his fortune is comprised of 943,000 Intuit shares and options he still holds. That’s after selling 2.4 million shares during his tenure as CEO from 2008 to 2018 (and as chairman until January 2022), netting him about $300 million (after taxes and the cost of option exercises). He takes the mantle as the state’s richest from Jim Justice, whose wealth has been weighed down by debt. Smith is worth some $250 million more than the governor, who dropped from the ranks of the world’s billionaires in 2021, when it was revealed that he’d personally guaranteed $850 million of loans to his coal businesses by Credit Suisse via a now insolvent intermediary, Greensill Capital. (Justice also owns the iconic Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, and other real estate assets in Appalachia; he disputes Forbes’ estimate of his fortune.) Smith declined to comment on Forbes’ estimate of his net worth. See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info .

Since leaving Google as chairman, Eric Schmidt has wielded a $20 billion fortune to build an ecosystem of influence, overseeing a vast constellation of companies and investments and taking on prestigious advisory roles that have cemented his reputation as Silicon Valley statesman and AI policy whisperer to the Pentagon. And for the past two years, the 68-year-old has extended that clout — and committed at least $100 million, according to three sources — to a startup accelerator called Steel Perlot, which he leads as executive chairman with CEO Michelle Ritter, a 29-year-old entrepreneur who he has been dating. Schmidt’s funds were intended to support the accelerator’s business, launching and investing in new ventures under the Steel Perlot umbrella. But just over a year after it launched, the company was asking Schmidt’s family office, Hillspire LLC, to pay its bills. Together, the world’s 10 richest people, according to Forbes, are worth $1.32 trillion as of November 1—but that’s nearly $50 billion less than a month ago. Led by a $35 billion decline in Elon Musk’s fortune during October, half of the ten richest are worth less on November 1 than they were at the start of October. Nonetheless, the trend this year has been for the fortunes at the top of the list to grow. All of the top ten richest are worth $100 billion or more as of November 1, a change from March, when only six of the top ten had fortunes that exceeded $100 billion and the top ten were worth a combined $1.17 trillion. For most of the first half of 2023, French luxury goods magnate Bernard Arnault was the world’s richest person, per Forbes—but that changed on June 8, 2023, when Tesla CEO Elon Musk overtook Arnault to become No. 1 in the world again. As of November 1, 2023, Musk is still the world’s richest person—a position he also held for much of 2022—but his fortune has shrunk by 14% in the past month, the result of a 20% decline in the share price of electric vehicle maker Tesla.
