It's such a juicy statement, we just had to start there! Can you break it down for us? In another Science 4-Hire episode, you spoke with David Futrell, senior director of assessment and selection at Wal-Mart. They test 10,000 to 15,000 candidates every day, (about 4 million annually). And that’s just for entry-level roles. David said their data shows that well over 90% of candidates will finish an assessment of any length. In this People & Performance podcast episode, we explore claims that the approach called Design Thinking is going to become a game-changer for HR processes. Design Thinking is a process for creative problem solving that’s helping HR teams across the globe deliver value, organize work and find solutions. At first glance, product design and HR feel about as far apart as any two aspects of work can get. The approach, however, has been lauded by many industry experts as a powerful approach that solves problems through a human-centric lens. Josh Bersin , suggests “ Design Thinking … transforms HR from a “process developer” into an “experience architect.” It empowers HR to reimagine every aspect of work: the physical environment; how people meet and interact; how managers spend their time; and how companies select, train, engage, and evaluate people .” Our guest expert is Glenn Donaldson , Chief Customer Officer, and President of intelliHR Americas. Glenn is a specialist in HR technology, with expertise and passion for product strategy, customer success, and business expansion. And he’s joining us from all the way Down Under. Stay tuned as we delve into design thinking transformation! Questions Include: Can you start by explaining the differences between it and the traditional “waterfall” project management approach; where projects are divided into different stages and each stage has to be completed before the project can move on to the next one? So in the “waterfall” project management approach projects are often led by a senior executive and hierarchy is fairly rigid. Talk to us about the autonomy Design Thinking gives to teams and how that can keep them ahead of the competition? Design Thinking brings a “Human-Centric Approach” that is present in every single step of the design process. Teams using Design Thinking correctly can be empowered and accountable to gather user insights that start with the question: “How might we”. Most organizations invest 90-100% of HR resources in operations and only 10% in data and planning. Furthermore, too many CEOs make the majority of their decisions based on HR data! Rupert believes the current mindset in many boardrooms “needs to change if organizations want to be forward-proof and prosperous“. The pandemic showed us that organizations can't stay still if they want to remain successful. Companies need to continuously adapt and evolve. It's not easy to change an organization's vision and practices but it can really pay off. This episode will include discussion of the why and how organizational planning and analysis keeps business agile and set up to grow in sustainable ways. In fact, as part of today's conversation, Rupert is going to share findings showing a 2-fold increase in productivity when certain org design approaches are adopted. In episode 1 of the second season of the People and Performance podcast, Chris and Bill are joined by Rupert Morrison , CEO at orgvue, a global HR and organizational planning company that believes that the brightest business leaders need to “design for disruption and turn it into a competitive advantage”. Traditionally in HR, the focus was on the individual rather than the broader picture. Those days are behind us. The best-performing companies put people data at the heart of their HR decisions. While people analytics leaders and those implementing analytics initiatives currently tend to come from outside of HR - it’s people from Finance or IT who have an HR mindset or skills - there is still a strong need for an HR background in order to understand all the processes, as well as having the soft skills. Not everyone in HR needs to be a data analyst, of course, but they should be able to be a data consumer, data translator, and data storyteller (as opposed to analyst) and that’s what Chris Bjorling and I will be focusing on today.
