Graeme Smith and his husband Steven John travel to Trinidad and Tobago to launch series 6 of OUTCAST UK just days after the country’s shock court ruling recriminalised homosexuality , reinstating a colonial-era law that now carries a 5-year prison sentence for same-sex intimacy. In this on-the-ground exclusive , OUTCAST UK meets Jason Jones , the activist taking the Trinidadian government to the Privy Council in London — the last hope for decriminalisation, not just in Trinidad, but for millions of LGBTQ+ people across the Commonwealth. Together, we unpack the deep scars of British colonial law , the grip of modern-day US-backed conservative networks , and the global battle to push back against the rising tide of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation. This isn’t just a story about one island — it’s a frontline report from a legal fight that could shape queer rights across the world. UK Black Pride took place on Sunday 11th August 2024, just a week after racist violence erupted on the UK's streets. Far right rioting, violent public racist attacks and inflammatory rhetoric have left some people of colour fearful or in their own homes. The UK's black and brown population have barely begun to process what has gone on. UK Black Pride this year was taking place in the middle of a global war on woke by the far right around the world. We begin to start the conversations about how safe we feel after these events and why UK Black Pride was such an important statement. Graeme Smith talk's the morning after the event to Asad Zafar a non binary queer activist, muslim and sexual health testing outreach worker in London. Graeme also talks to comedian and writer Holly Stars who is live from the Edinburgh fringe with news of their new drag comedy show "JUSTICE FOR HOLLY". and Kev McGrath is on hand with a check on the week's biggest LGBTQ news stories from around the world. His new book outlines his battles with alcohol and partying and how he hit rock bottom and lost his law firm. After a friend paid for him to go into rehab, he built his life back up again. Tate’s 24 year recovery journey has compelled him to write and speak about personal integrity, ethics, shame, self-acceptance, mental wellness, and resilience. His story demonstrates how shame and addiction can disrupt lives, businesses and institutions. His new book, Sunday Dinners, Moonshine, and Men, published in September 2023, recounts Tate’s troubled relationship with his father and his journey to overcome his shame and the scarcity mindset that fueled his addictions and blocked his ability to find peace in his life. Tate offers a deeply personal account of his dysfunctional childhood, from the backwoods of North Carolina, to his family’s struggles with poverty in Central Florida, and their ultimate move to the boomtown of 1970s Houston, Texas. He details his attempts to control his escalating drinking and repress his sexuality as he became a successful attorney, only to hit rock bottom and lose it all.THIS IT OUTCAST UK Like and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts and please leave a review. On our last edition of this Summer's Queer news updates on OUTCAST UK, we turn to Manchester Pride. Manchester Pride this year was without a doubt one of the most inclusive yet and saw entry prices seem to come down in price and some special access for lower income groups. This alongside a proudly diverse lineup headed by Danny Beard and Jodie Harsh. But it seems the scars of the bad PR of the last few years has left the organisation a little unsure of engaging with the media. Interview opportunities were notable scaled back for LGBTQ+ media. With the only notable broadcast interview of the CEO this time being more of a promo for just the events of the Big Weekend. But surely people deserve a bit more than just this? After initially contacting US regarding an interview with their CEO and some headliners, the PR people got a little upset with us for asking a couple of questions about charity funding plans going forward and a few more politically loaded questions about rights for LGBTQ+ people around the world and stopped answering our emails access to their artists and VIPs. Is Pride still a protest and charity fundraiser or has it changed into something else and how do you balance all these interests?---ALSO on this episode -a Putin ally warns of Gay Ukrainian super soldiers! This weekend is UK Black Pride and this episode is celebrating the voices and perspectives of Queer people of colour from the OUTCAST UK archives.Graeme chats to DJ, music producer and radio presenter NICK CHARLES, LA based Queer rapper BOBO SANGO and DEI speaker in the tech startup world, STEVEN JOHN (who also happens to be Graeme's long term partner). There is no singular voice to represent queer people of colour, its obviously an incredible broad community of people. But we wanted to bring some of the voices of some of queer black friends and family to takeover OUTCAST UK for this special episode.Nick Charles is now making some big moves with his Doing career, and this weekend he’s busy gigging in Manchester before heading to London to headline at Fire at the peak of UK Black Pride weekend. He’s also got his weekly national radio show on Gaydio and he is the cohost of the Loud Brown Gays podcast with his bestie Dan James. But Nick was born in Trinidad and had to leave there after a wave of anti LGBTQ violence over a decade ago. Now living in Manchester he told us the story of why he had to move to the UK. We heard a never before heard perspective of coming to the UK to escape persecution but being sent to a detention centre.Bobo Sango talks about the differences in his experiences in the UK vs the US.Steven John talks about Steven about how the brutal murder of George Floyd in the depths of Covid in 2020 brought the reality of structural racism right into the homes of many mixed relationships for the first time.THIS IS OUTCAST UKtickets to our London Podcast Festival Live show are on PLAYOUTCASTUK.COM Like and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts and please leave a review. Sophie Anderson was one part of the legendary LGBTQ+ extreme porn meme duo the cockdestroyers. Life after the destroyers split has been difficult for Sophie who continues to make extreme porn but has lost a boob twice after cosmetic surgery and her and partner, the porn actor and former Crystal Palace footballer Damien Oliver, have also begun recovering from a drugs and chemsex problem that nearly killed Sophie and saw the pair arrested. They have decided to sell video content on a platform called "Sc*t book" and actually show host Graeme a clip of their latest work in a moment the likes of which this show has never seen before. This is an interview episode that is as outrageous as it is emotional at times. But you can't help feel for the pair and be on their side as they battle against their demons to get their lives and careers back on track. — THIS EPISODE CONTAINS REFERENCES TO ADULT CONTENT FROM THE START AND SOME REFERENCES TO DRUGS AND MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES. Cruise that was a hit on the West End after lock down and after a critically acclaimed run, the show is heading to Manchester and a feature film of CRUISE is also currently in development. THIS EPISODE CONTAINS VERY ADULT THEMES AND LOTS OF SWEARING.Sophie Anderson is one half of the legendary C*ck Destroyers. She's still not in touch with Rebecca More the other half of the porn duo that went on to host Slag Wars and had legions of LGBTQ+ fans. But in this exclusive chat she makes clear that she would be open to a reconciliation and reforming at some point. Which begs the question, is a return on the cards? The two years since the peak of the adult meme duo's fame have not been easy for Sophie, now with fellow porn actor Damian Oliver. She lost a breast implant to infection twice, had botched cosmetic surgery on her bum and has lost a lot of her hair. But now on the road to recovery, Sophie and Damian have driven up to Manchester and are talking to Graeme Smith in his actual front living room on the hottest day of the year. We hear over the next few episodes about how despite the split and all the rumours flying about... she might be open minded to a reconciliation with Rebecca to reform the cock destroyers, if the possibility came up... news that will send LGBTQ+ fans into a lather. We also hear about how her adult work has continues with Damian but working from a mobile home and how the two combatted drugs issues after getting involved with the chemsex scene and how they prevented themselves from being totally drawn in to the orbit of drugs and sex on the London scene. Over three episodes they tell their story in their own unorthodox way. Like and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts and please leave a review. Her chat shows became the ones all the big ego celebs wanted to be on… only to be ridiculed and cut down to size be the Dame who in end could have passed for an elder member of the aristocracy. The Dame is one of the most ensuring cultural figures of the last few decades and was played by the Australian comic and actor Barry Humphries. Despite being the Dame being an LGBTQ+ icon to many, Humphries was famously anti woke and was labelled by some people as anti trans. So how did one of the biggest gender non confirming entertainment acts of all time end up being played by a straight man with conservative political leanings?Graeme Smith takes a personal look at the cultural impact of Dame Edna on young queer people growing up in the 80's and 90's and how that contrasted with the politics of the man himself. " Growing up, I struggled with parent abandonment and gender identity issues, so I turned to music as a form of escape. Music was a saviour for me in healing trauma. On my new podcast, I want to show you another side to artists that you’ve never heard before. So I'm curious to know how upcoming artists, to some of the biggest names in pop realised that music was their safety blanket too. Can you believe that Rumpelstiltskin is still being read in school? It’s a very old story – well past its time if ever there was one. It’s a story filled with misogyny, greed, and abuse; selling a daughter for financial gain, holding that daughter captive until she performs an impossible task, and all for the benefit of men. If that’s not a terrifying message to send to our kids, I don’t know what is.Gone are the days of the normalised nuclear family – a mother, father, brother and sister. According to research, stepfamilies are currently the fastest growing family dynamic in the UK and it is estimated that one in three of all families are now stepfamilies or blended families. In the context of LGBTQ+ books being banned from some libraries in the United States, out of a fear that young people may see them, it's more important than ever to ensure we allow families that exists out of the standard heteronormative nuclear family to be represented in literature. LGBTQ+ youth deserve to know they have a place in the world and are valued.Graeme Smith chats to the children's author Jennie Guay, who quit her job in financial services to write books that represented her own diverse, blended family. WARNING: THIS EPISODE CONTAINS DRUGS REFERENCES SOME PEOPLE IN RECOVERY MAY FIND TRIGGERING. Greg Owen has been called "one of the U.K.’s most vocal proponents of PrEP", describing himself as the "poster boy for PrEP in the UK". He is the PREP lead for Terrence Higgins Trust and talks frankly about the issues surrounding PREP, being HIV positive and issues surrounding chemsex. But did you know that Greg found out about PREP initially during his party days from a meth dealer at a sex party? Leading HIV researchers credit Greg and his campaign being a major force in the massive reduction in new HIV infections in the UK between 2015 and 2017. This despite the fact he was processing the news of his own HIV diagnosis, dealing with drugs issues and was homeless at the time. Here Graeme Smith and Greg Owen talk about the chemsex scene and how they both survived it and we hear Greg's thoughts on the question of whether PREP encourages people to take more sexual risks. Turns out it's not as simple as that. Like and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts and please leave a review. We're on Insta and TikTok @playoutcastuk Hosted on Acast. On this episode Graeme Smith catches up with the founder of iwantprepnow.co.uk and PREP lead for national UK HIV charity, Terrence Higgins Trust, Greg Owen. Greg is unique .... born in Belfast in the 80's he moved to London to study dance and drama... he like many of us has talked frankly about doing sex work and his experiences of chemsex. In fact... HIV researcher Sheena McCormack credits him with helping decrease the number of HIV diagnoses in the UK. From 2015–2016, the number of new diagnoses in London had decreased by 40%, while around the UK it was decreased by around a third. Owen recalls McCormack saying to him, "There are thousands of people who didn’t become HIV-positive this year because of you." In the first of a few epidodes , me and greg talked about prep in the context of LGBTQ+ history month, in the run up to him doing a talk at The University of Birmingham on this very subject a few days later. Former Wales rugby captain Gareth Thomas has settled a legal dispute with an ex-partner who accused him of "deceptively" transmitting HIV to him. Ian Baum alleged Mr Thomas hid his HIV status and "failed to take reasonable care" to ensure he did not pass it on. The former British and Irish Lion said he had settled the case for £75,000 plus costs, but it was not an admission of liability or guilt. The reaction in the media and the comments on social media have been devastating for the mental health of people living with HIV, already too often marginalised and treated with suspicion. In this episode Graeme chats to Sarah Macadam the CEO of Thames Valley Positive support and Jessica Harding, the deputy CEO of the HIV charity. The two also host the award nominated podcast "The HIV podcast" and specialise in guiding both their service users and podcast listeners around the world through the legalities, facts and history of HIV. We gather the facts and consider the implications of the standoff between the Scottish and the UK Government over trans rights. After 5 years of consultations, the Scottish government set about updating their gender recognition laws and a coalition of Nicola Sturgeon’s SNP, The Greens and The Scottish Labour Party recently passed the Gender recognition act. The vote in the Scottish parliament was decisive 88 for, 33 against, 4 abstained, 4 no vote. This was a clear message that these changes had a majority in the Scottish parliament. In London... this Scottish reform bill was viewed as a big problem. But the UK is lagging behind the rest of the world, over 30 countries and regions across 4 continents have updated their gender recognition laws over the last decade. In fact when it comes to the rights of trans- non binary people, the UK is now 21st on a list of nations alongside Russia. After a quick summary of how we got to this position, Graeme Smith talks to Paris Munro about how all this feels from the perspective of someone who is trans-non binary. WARNING: THIS EPISODE CONTAINS CONTENT SOME PEOPLE WILL FIND DISTURBING.After the last episode of OUTCAST UK we had to turn off comments on our George Floyd chat after the video got the attention of people on Tik Tok denying that it was a murder and making baseless claims to discredit the victim and the family. We made this bonus episode to comment on this initially. Then it became important to also bare witness to the latest act of police violence against people of colour. In the United States, LA Police repeatedly tasered Keenan Anderson, an unarmed black man who later died in hospital, the latest in a wave of deaths at the hands of the LAPD in the first few weeks of 2023. The high school english teacher and father flagged officers down for help after a car accident. The same thing happened here, people began to blame the victim for their own death. There is a pattern. In the UK the case of Ngozi Fulani being victim blamed after flagging up what many believed to be evidence of structural racism in the royal household, later having the charity commission investigate her organisation. According to The Voice "SISTAH SPACE boss Ngozi Fulani was cleared of wrongdoing by the Charity Commission, but some are questioning why the charities regulator launched an investigation in the first place. The announcement of the investigation by government-appointed quango last month came after a torrent of race-hate on social media aimed at Fulani, and criticism of her in mainstream newspapers." News of her being cleared by the commisssion was not picked up by most of the UK press. What ties all these together? Victim blaming. Then moments before we made this bonus episode, a man in Manchester tweeted about his experience of racism from cis gender white gay men in the city. We're commenting on all of this in this hot take on all the issues our last episode brought up and what's happened in the world this first half of January 2023. In 2020, during peak COVID lockdown, 18 months after Steven had moved from London to Liverpool to live with fiancé Graeme, an event happened thousands of miles away that shook the world and their relationship. It didn't just shake the social foundations of our society, it called on couples in mixed ethnicity relationships to confront the elephant in the room head on - STRUCTURAL RACISM. Within a week of the brutal public murder of George Floyd at the hands of police in the United States. Rates of depression and anxiety among African- Americans shot to higher rates than any other ethnic group, with 41 percent screening positive for at least one of those symptoms, data from the US Census Bureau showed. Whilst rates of anxiety and depression remained relatively flat among white people, black people everywhere have been effected mentally by what this period brought up for them, did their white friends get it? Accounts differ, but LGBTQ+ mixed ethnicity relationships are a good place to gauge the social change and learning that's been happening in our community. Steven John is DEI lead for a Manchester based tech business, he has hosted a series of talks and seminars for tech industry conferences in the UK around how DEI can be used to improve organisations. Nobody knows more about being on the receiving end of people's fears and assumptions than LGBTQ+ people. But we are all pre programmed with these from the environment we grew up in. The less aware you are of your internal (mental) state , the more you become a prisoner of it, Why are some Queer people still internally homophobic and how does this impact their later lives? How does all this trauma impact us and prevent us from being our authentic selves free from anxiety ? LGBTQ+ mental health is the focus in this episode as Graeme Smith talks to the US based psychotherapist and author Chris Warren Dickins from his practice in New Jersey about his new book "Beyond your confines". The book aimed at people who are interested in seeking therapy but often are not able to. This World AIDS Day we're getting together with people from leading UK regional HIV organisations looking at charity and community and the role they have played in the response to the HIV pandemic. With the absence of support from society generally, a hostile media and the initial medical outlook so bleak, it became the job of the community to provide hope and emotional support at first. But some of the initial groups are still with us and going strong pushing back on stigma and providing upto date education to a world that seems to have its view of HIV firmly set in a different age. G raeme Smith chats to the people in charge at Thames Valley Positive Support in Berkshire and George House Trust in Manchester. Both vital lifelines for people living with HIV since 1985. We're talking about how U+U and prep have changed the game and how a huge number of HIV positive people have lived in fear of being criminalised even until recently. We're also talking about the rights of people living with HIV when it comes to getting tattoos. In an episode packed with queer history, old news reports, first hand accounts and some exceptionally raw and personal reflection. We're also hearing how Manchester Pride this year took a moment to reflect at the annual HIV vigil with the reading of poem This Quilted History, written and read at the event by Jay Mitra leading the candlelit reflection. It sounds even more poignant this world aids day. Graeme catches up with The Director of Queer History at Goldsmiths, University of London, Dr Justin Bengry. We learn about ‘The Unexpected History of the Pink Pound’. and his work with Historic England on the history of Queer spaces outside of London. In the 1970s and 1980s an increasing variety of openly gay-oriented newspapers, magazines, clubs, and bars appeared, but it was not until the 1990s that terms like the ‘pink pound’, ‘pink dollar’, or ‘pink economy’ gained a foothold in marketing texts and everyday language. And yet, a longer history remains untold. In this talk based on a decade of research into the history of the Pink Pound, Dr Justin Bengry uncovers more than a century of evidence that shows how business has been fascinated with LGBTQ people. History shows us that long before Pride sponsorships and glossy magazines capitalism and homosexuality have been intertwined. We also hear about how a cruising spot at a public toilets in Liverpool made history and inspired a unique piece of art!LGBTQIA+ History is the social history of our society. JAY HAWKRIDGE opened a Tik Tok account in November 2020, aimed at reducing HIV stigma following his own positive HIV diagnosis months earlier. Since then he's gone out of his way to educate and inform on what it means to HIV positive in the 2020's. Often this means facing down extreme prejudice in the comments to his social media videos. Now a year on from beginning his campaign he is a Tik Tok UK LGBTQ+ ambassador, he's featured in a new major TV documentary for Sky and is ready to tell his story at length for the first time in a catchup with Graeme Smith in Liverpool ahead of World Aids Day 2021.
