In June of 2024, I talked with Peter Holsapple about the reissues of two classic albums by the dB’s – “Stands for Decibels” and “Repercussion”. I had the pleasure of talking to Peter again recently, this time about his soon to be released solo album, The Face of 68 . The song you’re hearing, “Larger than Life” , is the first single from that album. It was great to catch up with Peter to hear about his very busy 2024, the recording of the album, touring, his continued work as a member of The Paranoid Style , and some candid, honest talk reflecting on his lifestyle in the past and his outlook on life and love these days. Stay tuned for a second talk with the one and only Peter Holsapple. Photo by Bill Reeves. My first talk with Peter from June 2024 is also available here . Paul Rappaport is an accomplished guitarist who first heard guitar when he was a kid in California, watching a live local TV show featuring country guitar players…a show that was broadcast from a huge L.A. car lot. He learned to play, fell in love with the instrument and by high school was playing in bands. While attending college at UCLA, Paul got a job offer. A very appealing offer from Columbia Records. The position sounded good, but what really sweetened the deal was when he learned he could have all the records he wanted…for free. During his 33 years at Columbia, Paul Rappaport proved to be gifted at promotion and marketing and at forming close relationships with artist and bands, who knew him as Rapp. He gave Elvis Costello the red Rickenbacker used on Armed Forces . Pink Floyd asked Rapp to join them onstage at the London Arena. And he created some of the most memorable and visually stunning event promotions in rock history. All of this is told in Rapp’s fascinating new book – Gliders Over Hollywood: Airships, Airplay, and The Art Of Rock Promotion . You can order Gliders Over Hollywood: Airships, Airplay and The Art of Rock Promotion from Barnes & Noble here . You can also order the book from Amazon here . Steve Wynn has released well over 30 albums during the last 25 years, with his bands The Dream Syndicate, Danny & Dusty, Gutterball, The Miracle 3, The Baseball Project and more with quite a few solo records in the mix. He’s played over 2,000 shows in more than 25 countries and his songs have been recorded and/or performed by R.E.M., Luna, Concrete Blonde, The Black Crowes, Yo La Tengo and Eleventh Dream Day, among others. Steve has been featured in Rolling Stone, Mojo, Uncut, Entertainment Weekly, People, The Los Angeles Times, New York Times and many publications worldwide. His new book, I Wouldn’t Say It If It Wasn’t True: A Memoir Of Life, Music, And The Dream Syndicate covers a lot of Steve’s life. From his childhood in California to forming bands and opening for bands like R.E.M. and U2, to recent times, playing solo and also with his band The Baseball Project. When Chuck Mead was a young boy, he and his sister moved with their parents to Lawrence, Kansas. He got a drum kit as a gift when he was 12, and soon after started playing in the family’s band. It was made up of his mom, his dad, his grandparents and uncles who played country and western, and Chuck would also sing songs by Carl Perkins and Elvis. An uncle taught Chuck how to play guitar and by high school, he was playing in bands with friends. He continued to play while attending The University of Kansas, still having a fondness for rockabilly and country, but was also listening to Nick Lowe, Elvis Costello, Springsteen and even the Ramones. His band, The Homestead Grays, recorded a couple of records and after college, Chuck moved to Nashville. He played in the window of Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge and before long, he and Gary Bennett formed BR549. Crowds packed in to see them play Robert’s on Lower Broadway. They were an enormous hit, and soon became famous worldwide. A few weeks after seeing him with his current band, The Stalwarts, I had the pleasure of talking with the extremely talented, and very very funny, Chuck Mead. Photo by Joshua Black Wilkins. It was a wonderful experience talking with someone I've admired for so long. I love her songs, I love her voice. And she’s just incredibly cool. In additional to her solo work, there’s such a long list of great bands and artists she’s performed with. A list that includes – Pat Benatar, The dB’s, The Del-Lords, Dave Alvin, The Golden Palominos, Marshall Crenshaw, Van Dyke Parks, Vic Chesnutt, Wilco, Richard Thompson and many more. Syd’s debut solo album Surprise featured a lot of her pals from that list and her second album, War and Peace was backed by none other than that fantastic and much-loved band from Springfield, The Skeletons. I hope you’ll enjoy listening to this episode as much as I enjoyed talking with the one and only…Syd Straw. While growing up in Grand Rapids, Michigan, a young Beth Bombara took piano lessons in grade school. By the time she was entering high school, she had become interested in another instrument: her Mom’s electric guitar. She formed a punk band, Green Means Go, wrote some songs with her bandmates, and before long was playing for local audiences and gaining a loyal following. After attending college in both Michigan and Illinois, Beth moved to St. Louis, where she lives today. And, that following she had in high school…has now grown into a very large fan base. She stopped by the Frets studio today and I really hope you enjoy this episode as much as I enjoyed talking with the very talented singer-songwriter and guitarist, Beth Bombara. Brinsley Schwarz met Nick Lowe at school in the 1960s. They played in various bands with different group names and different members. In 1969, the band took the name of their lead guitarist, Brinsley Schwarz. On their studio albums, all from the 1970s, the band was made up of Brinsley along with Bob Andrews, Nick Lowe and Billy Rankin, with the addition of Ian Gomm on guitar and vocals, starting with their third LP, Silver Pistol . After releasing their final studio album The New Favourites of Brinsley Schwarz , Brinsley and Bob would become part of Graham Parker & The Rumour. Brinsley is not only a fine guitar player and vocalist, he also plays saxophone, keyboards and percussion, and…is also a luthier, working on guitars and amplifiers. These days he’s still writing and recording wonderful songs. It was a pleasure…and an honor, to talk with a guitar hero of mine, Brinsley Schwarz. In 1968, St. Louis band The Aerovons were getting noticed in clubs around town. Still in high school, their leader and singer, Tom Hartman, was composing their songs. The band was being managed by Tom’s mother, Maurine. She was determined to see her son and his bandmates make it big. Tom was 16 years old when he, his band and his manager mom made their first pilgrimage to England with demos in search of a record deal. They signed with Parlophone, but were asked to head back to St. Louis and write more material. A year later, the boys entered EMI Studio Two to record their debut album unaware that next door, in Studio One, their heroes The Beatles were recording their classic album, Abbey Road . Parlophone released some singles by The Aerovons, but problems among band members resulted in them falling apart. For several decades, their album Resurrection stayed in a vault before RPM in England released it on CD. Now, this legendary album has been remastered and reissued on vinyl. Stay tuned to hear the story of The Aerovons, as told by its founder and leader, Tom Hartman. Photo by Karen Hartman. Tyler Armstrong grew up in Springfield, Illinois and as a young kid, started banging on pots and pans, developing a love for percussion. Through his parents, he was exposed to both Contemporary Christian music and also secular music. Through his older sister, he also heard a great mix of pop and punk. Tyler appreciated good music, no matter what the genre. His dad was into classic rock, which opened another musical window. He got a guitar, and over time, became an incredibly great guitarist. At 18, he moved to Nashville for a while and was knocked out by what he heard from the musicians there. He’s played in bands that have opened for Cheap Trick, Molly Hatchet and .38 Special just to name a few. Tyler does session work, produces other artists his space Harbor Studios, and is currently playing and recording with FEEL on lead guitar. On my recent visit to Harbor, I got to hear Tyler Armstrong’s story in his own words and see at least some of his many guitars, amps and gear. FEEL plays Off Broadway in St. Louis on September 9. In the early 1980s, Rick Miller formed the first lineup of Southern Culture on the Skids. Rick had grown up dividing time between his father’s home in North Carolina and his mother’s home in California. Mary Huff, from Roanoke, Virginia was a cello major who also played bass guitar. Upon hearing that Rick’s band was looking for a replacement bass player, Mary joined and also recruited her long time friend Dave Hartman on drums. The trio of Rick, Mary and Dave would go on to become a much-loved, very fun and extremely talented band who have recorded and toured for several decades now. I’ve seen them play shows over the years, most recently at The Duck Room in St. Louis. And I had the pleasure of talking with Mary and Rick who called in from their rehearsal space and studio, The Kudzu Ranch. Photo by Ron Keith. Before her family moved from the Philippines to California, a teenage June Millington heard a girl playing guitar at school. Soon after, June and her sister Jean were playing acoustic guitars and ukuleles at variety shows. Before long, they were playing in bands, now with electric guitars. After several personnel changes and band names, The Svelts and Wild Honey, they landed a recording contract. They changed the band name to Fanny. People took notice, including David Bowie who referred to Fanny as “extraordinary... as important as anybody else.” Their first time playing a large venue was opening for The Kinks and Procol Harum. Fanny made their mark as a fantastic and much-loved all-female rock group. June Millington has made her mark – she’s Artistic Director at Institute for the Musical Arts. IMA runs rock n’ roll performance and recording programs for girls and young women. June recently released a new album, Snaphots . Her autobiography, Land of a Thousand Bridges: Island Girl in a Rock & Roll World tells her amazing story. I’ve been a fan for years. It was great…getting to talk with June Millington. Photo by Sasha Pedro You can purchase June’s autobiography, Land of a Thousand Bridges , from The Institute for the Musical Arts here . You can also get June’s latest album Snapshots here . After moving from the Chicago suburbs to St. Louis in the late ’80s, Adam Reichmann met Todd Schnitzer at Washington University. Both were wanting to form a band. They did just that, and the two became an early version of what would become Nadine, a group that would not only get a lot of attention in the Midwest, but in Europe as well. Nadine received critical acclaim from major music publications after releasing some very fine records. Adam Reichmann continues to write and record solo. His new album, Where Do I Begin under the name One Adam One, was produced by none other than his long-time bandmate, Todd Schnitzer. I caught up with Adam for a great talk about bands, songwriting and of course…guitars. Photo by ®Auset Sarno Find out more about Adam’s new album here . This episode was fueled by Stringbean Coffee. Over the last couple decades, Sarah Borges has built a loyal following, playing live shows and releasing several albums. Her first record, Silver City , was praised by NPR’s David Dye for showcasing “an unusual knack for mixing alternative rock with country” She stays very busy writing, recording and touring – but in early 2020, Sarah, like many musicians, became isolated from concert halls and even recording studios. Missing that audience connection and camaraderie of working with other artists, she continued to write and record from home, singing vocals into her iPhone utilizing her clothes closet as a vocal isolation booth. Stay tuned to hear more about how that experience took shape in the form of her latest album, Together Alone . The track you’re hearing, “Wouldn’t Know You” is from that album. In the early days of the World Wide Web, former Rolling Stone senior writer and associate editor Michael Goldberg published an online music magazine. Addicted to Noise , or ATN was the first online magazine to include audio samples with new album reviews. The list of bands and artists interviewed include Neil Young, R.E.M., Patti Smith, Sonic Youth, The Ramones, The Sex Pistols, Tom Waits, Lou Reed, Paul Westerberg and Prince. Michael conducted many of the interviews but also enlisted music critics like Dave Marsh, Greil Marcus, Deborah Frost and NPR’s rock-and-roll historian Ed Ward, one of the founders of South by Southwest. Some guest columns and reviews were written by musicians themselves. Among the contributors were Joey Ramone, Lenny Kaye, David Was and Sleater-Kinney’s Corin Tucker. Michael’s best interviews, essays and profiles not only from Addicted to Noise , but also from Esquire , Rolling Stone , DownBeat , Creem , New Musical Express and The San Francisco Chronicle are collected and available in his new book. Music featured in this episode is by The Flamin’ Groovies. Michael Goldberg co-founded National Records, which released their album Rock Juice. When playing solo, or when playing with her full band, multi-instrumentalist Molly Healey is a looping extraordinaire. She creates a piece of music, loops that piece, then skillfully plays accompaniment, on instruments including cello, violin and guitar. That sound, combined with her classically-trained voice, produces atmospheric music – often with full string arrangements performed entirely by Molly, multi-tracking in the studio. She’s opened for and played with many bands – and in addition to her solo work, continues to play violin for The Ozark Mountain Daredevils. His radio show begins with – “Broadcasting from Parts Unknown…” but we do know that Ben Vaughn grew up in the Philadelphia area on the New Jersey side of the river. When he was only 6 years old, his uncle gave him a Duane Eddy album. That record would have a profound impact on young Ben, who was playing drums in a garage band by the time he was 12. His interest then turned to the guitar. In the early ’80s, his band, the Ben Vaughn Combo recorded and released two albums and did a few tours of the U.S. – the albums got great reviews in Rolling Stone and the band got exposure on MTV . Marshall Crenshaw took notice and recorded one of Ben’s songs. Ben Vaughn has been recording, performing, touring and providing scores for films and TV theme songs for years now. He still finds time to host what, in this fan’s opinion, is one of the greatest radio shows on the airwaves. He also found time to call in…to Frets . Florida native Walter Parks was part of the folk duo The Nudes with cellist Stephanie Winters. He would later serve as sideman guitarist to Woodstock legend Richie Havens, and then form his own trio, Swamp Cabbage. He’s performed with R&B drum legend Bernard Purdie and with Judy Collins. He’s currently based in St. Louis and continues to perform and record both solo and with his Americana spirituals project, The Unlawful Assembly. I’ve never met anyone quite like Walter. He’s a great storyteller and recently, in his guitar workshop, I had the good fortune to hear some of his story. Murray Attaway and high school friend Jeff Walls formed a band in the early 1980s. Initially calling themselves Emergency Broadcast System, they would become Guadalcanal Diary, a band who became a fixture in the Athens, Georgia music scene. Their live shows were incredibly popular and before long they signed with independent label DB Records. After a tour of the states and a lot of airplay on college radio, they were signed by Elektra. They recorded and released albums throughout the ’80s playing their final show in 1989. Murray continues to write and record as a solo artist. While living in Columbia, Missouri, Deke Dickerson formed the much loved garage rock band, The Untamed Youth. He was 17. In the early ’90s, at the age of 22, Deke moved to L.A. and has enjoyed great success as an excellent guitarist. He once had a regular column in Guitar Player, has written several books on guitar, he’s even scored and contributed songs to film soundtracks. Two of Deke’s songs are featured in the newest Disneyland ride, Cars Land, at Disney’s California Adventure theme park. In 2019 he won the Ameripolitan Music Award for Musician of the Year. And, the Hallmark Guitar Company of Maryland manufactured a Deke Dickerson signature guitar. Those of us who follow Deke know that he stays very busy touring – not just in the states, but also in Canada and Europe. He’s always on the go, but I managed to track down the one, the only, Deke Dickerson. This episode is brought to you by Stringbean Coffee . Find out more about Deke at dekedickerson.com . Kip Loui has made music in his hometown of St. Louis for years. He’s a co-founder of the annual music festival Twangfest, an event that’s brought music performers from all over the country to St. Louis for 24 years now. Kip has played in some great bands. Belle Starr, The Rockhouse Ramblers, The Transmitters, The High Dives, In recent years, Kip has teamed up to play and record with Diesel Island, a band whose often rotating lineup has featured Brian Henneman, Mark Ortmann and John Horton, all formerly with The Bottle Rockets. He’s also released solo albums, often with his wife, JJ on vocals, guitar and harmonica. I’ve known about Kip for years, but it was only recently that I realized he lives just a few minutes away. So on one fine evening, here in the outskirts of St. Louis, we had a great talk. The music of Kip Loui can be listened to and purchased here at Bandcamp. Steve Scariano was in high school when magazines like Circus , Creem , Phonograph and Rolling Stone were not only publishing articles on guitar gods and rock ’n roll frontmen, but offering record reviews of bands one might not hear on most FM stations of that era. Michael Goldberg’s new book: “Wicked Game: The True Story of Guitarist James Calvin Wilsey” goes deep into the life of a brilliant but doomed unsung genius who we lost too soon. Jimmy wasn’t just a great and unique guitarist, but a music pioneer. Michael met Jimmy Wilsey in 1982 at a Silvertone gig and a few years later interviewed him in 1987. Not long after that, they became friends. His book tells the story of a charming, incredibly talented guy who ultimately succumbed to the dark side of addiction. It’s riveting, funny at times, heartbreaking and tragic, but fascinating – and hard to put down. The book is available through HoZac and Michael is donating a very generous portion of the profits to Jimmy Wilsey’s teenage son, Waylon. In the second episode featuring D. Clinton Thompson, you get to hear him mimic the Boxcar Willie train whistle sound, offer some Lou-isms (Donnie says he uses them every day) and discuss some recent work with The Domino Kings. Oh, and one of Donnie’s cats chimes in. Many thanks to Nick Sibley for permission to use “Sour Snow” and to Ben Vaughn for the use of “Don’t Spill Ketchup on My Toast Bread”. A guitar player’s guitar player. A “riff archivist”. D. Clinton Thompson has been a guitar hero of mine since the first time I saw him play onstage. His mastery of guitar, combined with an obvious great sense of humor, complements his unique vocal style. I really think you’ll enjoy this fascinating, often hilarious discussion with Donnie about his early days, crossing paths with Lou Whitney, and the many bands and artists that he’s contributed his incredible talents to. The veteran singer/guitarist/songwriter/producer — known to his friends, associates and bandmates as Roscoe — has spent the past three and a half decades building a powerful body of raw, personally charged music that’s earned him a far-reaching reputation as a rock ‘n’ roll original, while keeping him busy in his parallel careers as producer, sideman and collaborator. Craig Straubinger was founder, lead guitarist and singer of The Trip Daddys, a band who’s had a loyal following for many years. They had a great sound, a great look and definitely made their mark in the music community. Craig’s new band The Blue Sparks play, in their words, “American Music, our own hodgepodge of early rock ’n’ roll, electric blues, and rockabilly influences.” Save on certified Pre-Owned iPhones, Androids, AirPods, Macs, Smartwatches, accessories, and more at Plug Tech. – http://plug.tech/DJFEY Save on Certified Pre-Owned Electronics Plug has great prices on refurbished electronics.
