Zack Bartell got his start in athletics, developing an insane level of strength while training for football and, eventually, powerlifting. Fast forward nearly a decade, and he's turned that passion for training into building an incredibly successful in-person gym called SoCal Powerlifting. Through that process, he's built his own business and expertise to help others achieve the same within the in-person and online coaching space. In this episode, Zack and I deep dive into the basics of building a business, including first-principle thinking. We then discuss the differences between building an in-person versus an online coaching business and how to be successful within either endeavor. Enjoy. Dr. Peter Giacobbi and I first met in a bar where we ended up discussing various philosophical interests and ways of understanding the world. Little did I know I was talking to one of the foremost experts in sport psychology and guided imagery. Since that fateful day, he's become a member of my dissertation committee and enlightened me to the many benefits of guided imagery and mindfulness for sport performance and health behavior change. In this episode, we deep dive on guided imagery for performance enhancement and health behavior change, including its impact on smoking cessation, stress reduction, and as a tool to decrease clarking in the gym. You're in the backroom with your athlete and they just smoked their opener. As they walk off the stage, you need to figure out how many kilos to bump up. Is there a science to attempt selection? Is it all based on intuition? Is it both? Strength is a hot commodity in the sport of weightlifting. Every coach and athlete will claw and scratch for every kilo they can add to their squats, pulls, and presses. This is for good reason - strength underpins all forms of movement. So, the question becomes, what's the best way to develop it, and is it even that important in the first place? Listen in as we deep dive on the concept of strength, including how it's defined, developed, and optimized for within a program. Enjoy. Many athletes struggle with similar aspects of the lifts. This is because snatches and cleans will always be snatches and cleans, without much external unpredictability. Pull variations are intended to emphasize phases of the lift that must be trained perfectly. How you program these movements, including high and low stress days, to your specific population of athletes SHOULD be meaningfully different than most other coaches. Listen in as we discuss our favorite things, including snatch high pulls, low stress training days, and creating your own training system. Enjoy. The longer you write programs, the less they look like templatized, cookie-cutter 12-week blocks. Eventually, the programs morph into something more akin to something found in the Russian manuals. This is due to the critical nature of training volume, intensity, and exercise selection driving the adaptive response. Blanket prescriptions (5x5) go the way of the dinosaurs, and more responsive, finely tuned strategies emerge (1x1, then, 3x3, then 2x6). Listen in as we discuss the recent programming overhauls Max and I have converged on, why Max is so good at dealing blackjack, and the key to making it through tough times. Enjoy. As coaches, sport scientists, and athletes, we love intellectualizing our sport. There is an attempt to understand as much as possible so we can prescribe training to maximize performance. Behind all of this, the person carrying out this training can get lost amidst a myriad labels. In this episode, I sit down with Newton Cheng, National champion powerlifter and the director of performance and health at Google, to discuss his life's journey. This journey involves burnout, anxiety and depressive symptoms, and understanding who he is and what he values. After struggling during the start of the pandemic, he turned his life around by doing deep work, finding his values, and pursuing them. This show is dedicated to the people who compete, coach, and study the sport, but are much more than that. Jacob Tsypkin is a man after my own heart. We share very similar interests, including philosophy, weightlifting, critical thinking, training theory, and plenty more. In this episode of the podcast, we discuss how he managed to center his life around training. Now the co-owner of Framework BJJ, he's found himself in the same position he's been in for decades, running a gym and eating/sleeping/breathing physical training. For most, the decision to go all in on yourself and your passion sounds like a difficult thing to do, occupying plenty of risk. For him, it wasn't. Aaron Williams is currently flying undert the radar, but not for long... Days after snatching 182kg/400lbs and cleaning 223kg/490lbs, we welcome him onto the podcast to discuss his backstory, bringing attention to his unbelievable abilities. He started, like most kids, playing high school sports with enough talent to make it to the next level. But after finishing his collegiate football career, his obsession with lifting weights was still as powerful as ever, eventually introducing him to the sport of weightlifting. Now the #2 +109kg in the nation, he's chasing Keiser Witte one kilo at a time. This is a race that will end with American records, 200+kg snatches, and a showcase of what American weightlifting is capable of. Sergii Putsov is the definition of Theory to Practice. From coming up in the Ukranian weightlifting system to earning his PhD studying the sport of weightlifting, you'd be hard pressed to find someone more qualified to discuss the sport. In this episode of the podcast Sergii and I deep dive on the concept of "Active Rest", exploring what athletes should do in the short time immediately after a major competition. We also discuss Europeans and, what seems to be a very hot topic, how to grow the sport of weightlifting. If I were to describe exactly what I would want this podcast to be, I think this show would sum it up nicely. With a blend of occupational psychology and sport performance, we end up with a discussion covering what creates a (winning) team identity and the underlying group/personal psychology involved. Jeremy Holt has spent the better part of his professional years understanding what it takes to develop great leaders and great teams. He has been able to take a formal education, his Master's in Occupational Psychology, and turn that into success on the turf, race track, and in the UK Defence Academy. This was an incredibly special episode of the podcast, as I was joined by the great Steven Hayes and the show's very first co-host, Tom Newton. Steven Hayes is a Nevada Foundation Professor of Psychology in the Behavior Analysis program at the University of Nevada. He's authored 47 books and nearly 670 scientific articles, with a career focused on an analysis of the nature of human language and cognition and the application of this to the understanding and alleviation of human suffering. He is the developer of Relational Frame Theory, an account of human higher cognition, and has guided its extension to Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), a popular evidence-based form of psychotherapy that uses mindfulness, acceptance, and values-based methods. We discussed philosophy of science, Steven's involvement in the creation of ACT, and how people can work to integrate those concepts into their lives. Athlete monitoring is an area relatively unexplored in the weightlifting world. The notion of tracking session RPE or giving out a wellness questionnaire can seem a bit esoteric. While these metrics may not be tracked and utilized in a program, it doesn’t obviate their effectiveness in communicating how well an athlete is tolerating training. In this two part series Drake and I cover athlete monitoring, the what, why, and how, from both an objective and subjective standpoint. We discuss wellness questionnaires, session RPE, the isometric mid thigh pull, squat jumps, and how all of this relates to your athlete’s (or potentially your own) training. We interrupt your regularly scheduled podcasts about programming and technique, to bring you a voice that needs a bigger reach. Jennyfer Roberts was an up and coming weightlifter. She had risen through the ranks, swiftly dominating the platform and adding kilo after kilo to her total. Her story takes a turn during her first international trip with team USA, ending with the involvement of SafeSport, USA Weightlifting, numerous legal professionals, and an excess of heartbreak and anguish. For many who saw the story come to a close when the final decisions were made about the case, Jennyfer was the exception, because for her "there is no close to this." Join us as we discuss the events and people who brought her into this great sport, but finish with the events and people who ripped it from her. Addendum - Towards the end of the podcast I asked Jennyfer a question that she felt she inadequately answered. Here is her response and message for all of the listeners: "... as I was thinking through what was said, I also realized I hate one of the things I said. I panicked and said something other people say and not really what I wanted to say which is that when you make comments online or in person about victims and / and women, think of them as whole ass human beings! Think of sexual assault survivors as whole ass humans worthy of protection. You shouldn't have to have a good relationship with a woman in your life to care about them and respect them, you shouldn't have to know a sexual assault survivors in the flesh to care about them and think about them and consider them and their life in your dialogue. They deserve care and protection and words of violence, or mistrust, or demeaning, objectifying victims or women in general said on the internet or between people in locker rooms and executive suites it all needs to stop, it all contributes to rape culture and it's not ok. Stop ignoring and denying their story, their reality, their calls for help, their needs and wants, they don't want to be here either. The consequences, the scars left, they're quite severe for us survivors and the ripple effect goes far beyond us to our families and communities. A victim coming forward in the first place is huge and that needs to be recognized, more widely known and accepted. In all this, I hope that is what can be taken away, because I know I'm not alone in having first-hand experience of this never ending constantly building timeline of painful memories as well as the constant judgement and expectations that come with going through the proper channels or handling it "the right way". We want more victims to feel safe coming forward, not the opposite so it has to be better, everyone has to be better because there are survivors all around you. Trust me, I know, I'm here. Definitely try and consider that next time you talk about it or comment about it." Ways to contact Jennyfer: Email - <a href="m

I am back with another episode of the podcast and today I have something a little different. I mostly record shows focused on discussing the nuances of programming, how to improve training outcomes, an athlete's career, etc., but after listening to Danny's recent podcast series on veganism I thought it'd be great to have him on for a chat. We discuss the ethics, global impact, and nutritional consequences of consuming/not consuming animal products. I try to take an unbiased stance as the interviewer and pick Danny's brain on his perspective as nutrition expert and someone who been having the conversation with other experts. I am back with a guest post from the Weightlifting House podcast! This week I had on Jason Tremblay of The Strength Guys. We had one heck of a conversation, covering: all things programming for strength, building an athlete monitoring system, what Jason would have differently earlier in his coaching career, what it was like coaching at a high-level before he had competed in the sport, and much more!
