In this week’s episode, I reflect on my recent travels to Okinawa and Taipei and how they reinforced a major shift in my perspective on solo travel. While Okinawa didn’t quite live up to my expectations, Taipei reminded me of what makes travel truly special—connection. Through serendipitous reunions and shared experiences, I realized that my most meaningful moments come from the people I meet along the way. This episode explores the evolution of how I travel, the role of community in shaping experiences, and why I’m embracing a new phase of connection over solitude. Plus, I introduce Five Essential Questions to help you reflect on how relationships add depth and meaning to your journey. Key Talking Points: The Reality of Solo Travel: Why my recent trip to Okinawa felt isolating and what I learned from it. The Power of Shared Experiences: Reuniting with friends in Taipei and how those moments reinforced the joy of connection. Outgrowing Solo Travel: Why independence was once essential, but now, meaningful relationships take priority. Finding Community in Travel: How groups like SeoulShare have reshaped my experience of belonging. All episodes are available at www.mindfulmidlifecrisis.com . Need a place to start? Additionally, I describe how my mindfulness practice and therapy have given me the tools to navigate this transitional period with more curiosity, openness, compassion, and awareness. I’m changing up some things on the podcast this week, so I just wanted to pop on and let you know that I didn’t feel comfortable releasing this week’s originally scheduled episode because the focus was on how to fully embrace and live more presently with the somatic experience of joy. Much of what I was planning to discuss in that episode revolves around how the city of Seoul and the people I’ve met here elicit this newfound joy that I have been experiencing lately, but given the tragedy that took place in Itaewon last weekend, and the fact that the friends and families of those whose lives were lost as well as the entire country are in a national period of mourning, which for those families will last a lifetime, and considering many of my friends here from the SeoulShare, Soul Walkers, and CIK meetup groups, and me for that matter, were in Itaewon that night and some of us were only a block away from where this tragedy took place without even realizing that anything was wrong, I don’t think this is the right time to share that episode. I’m sure I’ll share it at some point down the road, but now is not that time. Now is a time for healing; my friend and organizer of SeoulShare and past guest Iggy Lee have been organizing events for people in the groups to come together who may be feeling isolated or alone in these trying times, and he shared a saying that goes, “Joy is doubled when shared; sorrow is halved when shared.” Originally this episode was supposed to be about how we can experience more joy in our lives by sharing more meaningful moments with our friends, but right now, we’re going to take some time to heal in the company of our friends. I just want to take a minute to express my deepest sympathies to the families and friends who lost loved ones last weekend in Itaewon. There’s nothing more I can say that will lessen your pain, but I hope you are surrounded by people you love and who will support you through this unimaginably difficult time. So, that’s it for this week. Thank you for tuning in. Please take the next week to tell the people who add value to your life how much you love and appreciate them. — All of our episodes are available at www.mindfulmidlifecrisis.com If this episode resonates with you, please share it with your family and friends. Brian is a former Corporate American turned Global Citizen. After a career in finance, several years as a fitness studio owner, and giving away 99% of my belongings, Brian left the traditional path to see the world and live life on his own terms. Brian created Simple Man Guide, a personal brand dedicated to helping others leave the corporate world behind, simplify their lives, and regain power over their most precious asset - time. Brian is currently living with his girlfriend in Amsterdam, and he is working on his 1:1 coaching program, Take The Leap, which helps others fund their corporate escape, ditch their 9-5 grind, monetize their favorite skills, and live their dream life. We ask Brian: --You left the 9-5 grind a few years ago. Walk us through that. --When you look back on the 9-5 grind and when you talk about that with your clients, what are a few things that come up as far as things they’d like to never do again? --What’s the danger in, “Well, I’m unhappy at my job HERE, so I’ll just get another job doing the same thing somewhere else”? --How has the increased demand for working remotely shifted the way you work with clients? Do you think working remotely frees some people up from the 9-5 grind, or is your goal more to liberate people from Corporate America? Like, what do you have against Corporate America?! --One thing you continually stress, which I think is extremely responsible of you, is that if someone wants to escape the 9-5 grind, they need to sit down and REALLY take a look at what they’re financially responsible for before just saying, “Fuck it! I’m out!” What does that process/conversation look like with you? --So you and I are very similar in that neither of us have ever been married or have children. As someone who struggles with impostor syndrome, I’m wondering how often “You just don’t get it…I have a family” comes up in a conversation. --What are some other self-limiting beliefs you hear from your clients and how do you navigate those beliefs with them? --What’s the best part about what you do? Leave the Rest podcast. Bryan is also a former TV news anchor in the Twin Cities who now serves as a mental health advocate as both a breathwork Facilitator and meditation guide. Bryan is currently enrolled in grad school to become a therapist so that he can continue supporting the wellness of others. Bryan is here today to share his mental health journey as well as speak to his experiences with both medication and meditation. We ask Bryan: --Your podcast is called “Take What Serves. Leave the Rest.” That’s such a great title, so I’d like you to share the idea behind that title. --On your podcast, you openly talk about your mental health concerns, so we’d love for you to share your story with our listeners as well. --How has your mental health journey influenced your decision to become a therapist? --What are you learning about yourself during this time, what are you noticing about the clients you’re seeing at this time, and how do you navigate the potential desire to project your own experiences onto your clients? --You talked about the role medication has played in your mental health journey. Can you elaborate on that for us? --One thing you talked about on your podcast is the stigma around medication, and if Brian and I are being honest, we have spoken out against the use of medication. I think for the two of us, it’s more of a personal experience kind of thing (and for me I believe that medication is too often over-prescribed or used before truly assessing the whole picture of the patient), but one thing you said in the podcast that I really liked is that it doesn’t have to be an “either/or” scenario, and you’re an example of that because you both use medication but you also practice meditation and yoga. In what ways do these all complement each other to serve your wellness? Thank you for listening to the Mindful Midlife Crisis! Questions? Comments? Suggestions? Topics you want us to cover? Kari is also a co-author of the #1 bestselling book The Successful Mind: Tools for Living a Purposeful, Productive, and Happy Life . Kari has been featured on PBS, CBS, ABC and multiple podcasts and radio shows. She founded GrayTonic and the Question the Drink for 30 program after her own experience as a former gray area drinker left her frustrated and confused with traditional programs. Kari is here today to talk to us about the "gray areas" we have in our lives, and what we can do about them. We ask Kari: --Tell us more about what you mean by “living in the gray” and how it can have an effect on people. --Both Brian and I have had issues with alcohol in the past that we’ve discussed on the show, as have you. Tell us about how you “stepped out of the gray”. --For the people out there yelling, “But I only have a glass (or two) a night…what’s so wrong with that!” What do you say? --When does “living in the gray” cross into something more serious like addiction? --You do a consultation and a deep dive assessment. What do those look like? What seems to be a recurring theme in these conversations that maybe our listeners could reflect on as they listen to this? --How much of a role does peer pressure play in all this? Once someone has decided to give sober living a chance, what’s something they can say to help their friends understand that they’re just not drinking anymore? --Tell us more about Question the Drink and the work you’re doing with that. Danny is a best-selling author and sought-after speaker whose life was transformed after he died when 8,000 volts of electricity ripped through his body. Danny then came back to life from a place where he connected with “something bigger than us.” He uses his experience to lead people to create more perspective, joy, and a love that replaces weariness with inspiration, drives vision, and creates momentum for people in all areas of their lives. Danny is also a renowned speaker who has been inspiring the people of Fortune 500 companies like Merck, Comcast, The Ritz-Carlton, the Marriott, and Lincoln Financial with insight and practical tools that build momentum in the midst of defeating monotony. Danny’s reputation as an influencer in this arena continues to grow among some of the most well-respected brands and organizations nationwide. Listen to Danny's podcast Back to Life wherever you get your podcasts! We ask Danny: --Looking back on who you were before your near-death experience, how would you describe yourself and how you lived your life? --When we talked earlier, you talked about navigating a multitude of emotions, especially guilt. Can you dive a little deeper into that please? --It sounds like you had to heal and learn to reckon with what you could not change before you were able to move on. How did you go about doing that? --One thing that came out during our initial conversation is your strong relationship with Jesus, but I think what’s important for people to know is that you had a strong faith and relationship before your near-death experience. In all honesty, I’m not someone who has a strong belief in one God/Jesus so whenever people who have a strong faith talk about it, I get a little uncomfortable, but I didn’t ever feel that way the last time we talked and I think it’s because you’re so casual in the way you describe your relationship, so much so that you have a book called I Met Jesus for a Miller Lite . Can you talk about your casual, friendly relationship with Jesus (and also why does Jesus have such terrible taste in beer?) --You have a new book out now called Take the Shit Out of the Show , and much like the Bible, you use parables inspired by real people in order to help readers regain control over their lives. Val is also the host of The Selfish Woman Podcast where she’s on a mission to prove that ‘selfish’ is not a dirty word, and when we make ourselves a priority, it transforms our relationship with ourselves and with others, which is exactly what she’s here to talk about today. We ask Val: --So selfishness, self-centeredness, and self-absorption all come with negative connotations. I am of the opinion that there is nuance in being self-centered and there is the potential for developing awareness when it comes to self-absorption, but I am not sold on any positives that come from selfishness…what am I missing, or is this more about semantics? --When you’re coaching, how do you balance the fine line between helping your clients recognize self-limiting beliefs and behaviors that empower them while at the same time not letting that empowerment drift into becoming an egotistical asshole? --How do you see selfishness working FOR someone when it comes to relationships? --One thing I whole-heartedly agree with you on is how labeling someone a narcissist is all the rage these days when in reality, they’re more likely just an immature asshole. In your opinion, what’s the difference? --Tell us more about what subconscious programming is and how that can limit our beliefs if we’re not careful. --How do we identify those limiting beliefs and what does “saturating in your truth” look like? How do we do that? --How does recognizing that difference between an asshole and a narcissist apply to your Boundaries Bootcamp? --Tell us about your upcoming group program Women Rising. --Our show seems to be very popular with the ladies, particularly midlife female coaches who will reach out to us to be guests on the show. She is here today to talk about how to revive your midlife marriage. We ask Deanna: --How did you go from being an English teacher to helping couples navigate their marriages in the second half of life? Can you talk a little bit about what you saw are the struggles in your own marriage and how getting outside help improved you and your husband’s relationship with each other? --When couples work with you, they focus on cultivating deeper intimacy, updating their communication approach, and creating meaningful shared experiences. Talk about how those three have a tendency to fade in a marriage as we get older. --How do you go about cultivating deeper intimacy, updating communication approaches, and creating meaningful shared experiences? --Have you ever worked with a couple and thought to yourself, “You know what…it may be time to throw in the towel”? If so, how does that conversation go? --When we discussed The Female Brain by Louann Brizendine, we talked about how in the book they mention that 65% of divorces by people over the age of 50 are initiated by women, and they made it sound like some of that is linked to what Margaret Mead calls “postmenopausal zest”, which the book describes as a woman feeling freed from menstrual cycles and all that comes with it. We ask Christine: --How do we first find clarity within ourselves so that we actually know what it is that we want instead of what has been projected onto us through other people’s opinions, standards, checklists? --Once we’ve been honest and clear with ourselves, how do we have those conversations with partners/future partners? --With regards to “if it’s not a hell yes, it’s a hell,” I wanted to challenge that idea a bit by throwing in the word “maybe”: Do you think that people who say “if it’s not a hell yes, then it’s a hell no” are actually using that as an excuse to not do the work that is required to make a relationship last or even using it as an excuse to procrastinate for the PERFECT conditions to start dating? Is that where we could squeeze in the “maybe” so they stretch their comfort zone a little bit? --Your focus is on helping high-performing women create the relationship of their dreams. In this week's episode, Billy and Brian ask pediatric operating room nurse and trauma-informed yoga instructor Marie Nutter: --A lot of our season has focused on reinventing ourselves after facing tragedy or trauma, and your story follows that same script. Can you share with us your journey to healing and reinvention after the death of your twin brother? --From that experience came the Human Healing Project, so tell us more about what that is and what your mission/goal is. --As we mentioned, you work in health care during the day and at night you teach yoga. You recently launched MN Yoga, and your goal is to teach trauma-informed yoga and meditation classes to health care providers, first responders, veterans among others who battle daily secondary trauma accumulated from enduring a career where you have to disconnect yourself to literally save others. What is trauma-informed yoga, how does it differ from the yoga we might take at a CorePower, and why do you see a need for this? --On your web site you say, “I am not an expert in healing, psychology or philosophy. I am, however, a human being who is finding expertise in my lived experience, and who is choosing to turn my own healing project into a universal crusade of love.” I think that’s a powerful statement because it connects to what we discussed with Jodi Pfarr about understanding one’s experiences.
