April is Second Chance Month where people all over the country have the shared goal of informing and highlighting the many opportunities for state, local, and tribal governments and community-based service providers to build meaningful second chances for people returning from incarceration. We can't think of a better way to recognize this special month than by highlighting the work of Augie Ghilaraducci in the reentry space. Once incarcerated himself, Augie made the most of his experience by using his time in prison to help others. As part of a community outreach program, he spoke about his ethical failures at high schools, colleges, and businesses for almost a decade. He also developed a series of employment readiness, financial literacy, life skills, and barriers to re-entry courses that he taught to fellow inmates. When he was released, he turned his passion into a second career empowering those dealing with incarceration, addiction, trauma, loss, and other life-changing events to break the chains of the past and create a positive new future. Working with Youturn Health and 2nd Opportunity Augie brings support and hope to those getting back into life. His podcast, featured here, is worth a listen!

Her story is an example of how our coaches use their struggles and their triumphs to encourage others along a path to a life worth living. It has never been easier to place a bet. Once confined mostly to casinos concentrated in Las Vegas and Atlantic City, gambling has expanded to include ready access to lotteries and online games and video games with gambling elements for adults and children. Sports betting is now legal in 37 states plus Washington, DC, with six more considering legislation, according to American Gaming Association data from early 2023. People can gamble around the clock from anywhere and, increasingly, at many ages, including teenagers and even young children who are well below the legal age for gambling. As access to gambling has expanded, psychologists and other experts have become concerned not just that more people will give it a try, but that more will develop gambling problems. And while it is still too soon to know what the long-term effects will be, evidence is growing to suggest that young people, especially boys and men, are among those particularly vulnerable to gambling addiction—the same demographic most often participating in the newest forms of gambling: sports betting and video game-based gambling. * Youturn Health's CEO Hamilton Baiden and Craig Carton have been friends for years. Craig was a successful radio and television personality until his gambling addiction landed him in prison for 12 months. Listen to his story where he seemingly has it all but falls into the dark world of high stakes gambling where his life was literally at stake. Since getting out of prison and finding work again in his chose profession, he works hard to carry the message of recovery to others. Craig Carton is an American radio and television personality. He was the co-host of the Carton and Roberts sports radio program on WFAN in New York City, and is seen nationally on Fox Sports 1 as host of The Carton Show weekday mornings. He previously co-hosted Boomer and Carton on WFAN and later CBS Sports Network from 2007 to 2017. During its 10-year run, Boomer and Carton became the most listened to show in WFAN history, placing first among men ages 25–54. According to NIH, "Opioid use disorder and opioid addiction remain at epidemic levels in the U.S. and worldwide. Three million US citizens and 16 million individuals worldwide have had or currently suffer from opioid use disorder (OUD). More than 500,000 in the United States are dependent on heroin." John Watson was seventeen when his best friend was in an accident and given Oxycotin for the pain. Kids being kids, John and his friend discovered that this pill made them feel very good. Kim Hix has made it her life's mission to spread awareness about fentanyl poisoning. A wife, mother and nutrition, health, and fitness coach of 20 years, Kim knows her way around the wellness space. She knew when her daughter started using drugs as a coping mechanism that she needed to step in. She was a constant support to her daughter Kelsie helping her navigate treatment and recovery. Once home however, Kelsie managed to get ahold of a Xanax which would prove to be fatal. What she thought was a Xanax was really laced with Fentanyl-enough to cause her to stop breathing. It was February of 2022 when Kim found Kelsie slumped over in her room and her life changed forever. Fentanyl is the most potent opioid pain reliever available for use in medical treatment. It is roughly 100 times more potent than morphine and 50 times more potent than heroin. Used correctly, it is a useful and powerful pain reliever, but too much will kill you and there is no way to tell how much may be in any drug sold outside of a prescription. It is in cocaine, marijuana, pain pills, anxiety medication, and many more. Help support Kelsie’s Cause, created by Kim to help spread awareness and education about the dangers of fentanyl. It could save the life of someone you know! HOME | fentanyl awareness kelsie's cause (kelsiescause.com)

Meeting people where they are is the theme that runs through Youturn Health. We do not believe that rock bottom is necessary to receive compassion and hope. Sometimes just an ear to listen will change a person's trajectory in life. Add to that a warm cooked Sunday dinner and you have the beginnings of real change. That is exactly what John Martin and his wife Cassandra provide with their non-profit, Sunday Dinner with a Twist. John was once homeless, addicted to drugs and alcohol, and suicidal. He credits one man and his higher power for his ability to turn his life around and give back to the community. He says if there is one person who will never give up on you, listens, and shows compassion, anything is possible. We are constantly barraged by messages of doom and gloom in the world today, but John and his wife show us the possibility of beautiful outcomes when we stop, listen, show compassion, and even provide a warm meal. Fronzie and Mags Roemer are turning grief into action, and with their fierce determination are hoping to give emotional support animals to anyone struggling with a mental health issue. They were able to have a front row seat to witness the positive impact an ESA can have on someone's life. Although their beloved son and brother Patrick is no longer with us, his spirit lives on in their non-profit aptly named Paws for Patrick . Paws for Patrick was created to honor the memory of Patrick Roemer through providing support to young people with mental illness through the use of emotional support animals (ESAs) and therapy animals. Patrick brought joy to so many people during his short life. His family will always cherish memories of his infectious laugh, heart-warming smile, analytical conversation, authentic creativity, discipline for physical fitness, and especially his love of animals, particularly dogs. His friends remember him for his sharp and often irreverent wit, his patient and compassionate listening, his loyalty, and fearless competitive nature as witnessed in his participation in wrestling, football, rugby, and obstacle course races. Patrick had a very special connection with his animals, particulary his beloved dog, Cici. No matter what was going on in his life, he would find peace, comfort and light when he was with her. After Cici's quick and unexpected death, Patrick adopted Indy, a Cici lookalike, and planned to have her join him when he entered Colorado State University as a freshman in the fall of 2020. Unfortunately, Patrick struggled with depression and anxiety through most of his young life, and this disease took him from his loved ones at the young age of 18. Patrick's mom Fronzie and his sister Mags are commtted to making sure everyone needing as ESA gets one. We hope you will consider donating time and money to this incredible cause that will save lives. To learn more: Make a Donation | Paws for Patrick Emotional Support Animals | Paws for Patrick

Motivated by her own father’s unwavering dedication to his family first, and career second, Katherine aims to provide tools and resources necessary for police officers to excel in their careers while prioritizing their families and personal lives. With a passion for fostering community and healthy connections, Katherine aspires to make a lasting impact on the well-being of those who serve and protect - and their families. Andrew Douglas knows this firsthand as his personal trauma coupled with the daily traumas of being a firefighter led him to a suicide attempt. Instead of walking away, he has decided to help his "brothers and sisters" face their pain and heal. In His Own Words: After dedicating years of my life to serving my community as a firefighter/paramedic and union leader, I experienced the personal struggle of dealing with PTSD. Recognizing the importance of mental health support, I co-founded siento, a stigma-free mobile application platform designed to help first responders and professionals in high-stress industries. At siento, our mission is to provide a safe and anonymous space for people to share their feelings, connect with others who understand their challenges, and access the mental health assistance they need. We believe that by fostering an environment of understanding and compassion, we can make a positive impact on the lives of those who serve our communities and work under immense pressure. As a passionate advocate for mental health, I am committed to raising awareness about the importance of mental well-being, and to breaking down barriers that prevent people from seeking the help they need. Let's work together to support and uplift those who dedicate their lives to helping others. https://www.facebook.com/andrew.douglas.334 https://www.linkedin.com/in/andrew-douglas-b358b4226/ https://www.instagram.com/the_fresh_outdoors/ Tiktok: @thefreshoutdoors https://www.linkedin.com/company/siento-inc/?viewAsMember=true www.siento.io

July Is BIPOC Mental Health Month and Youturn Health wants to recognize mental health advocate Dejr Bostick and highlight the incredible work he is doing. According to Black Health Matters , "Depression among Black men is an oft-unspoken pain that deeply affects the health and quality of life of Black people. In fact, the most current review of evidence on Black men and depression suggests a prevalence of five percent to 10 percent. This figure may be much larger, as depression is commonly underdiagnosed . Even more, the failure to adequately address the roots of Black male depression is undermining our communities and keeping us blind to the deep harm of historical and structural racism. Dejr Bostick is on a mission to reduce stigma and encourage black men to take care of their mental health through an organization he founded called Black Men Meditate . Dejr Bostick, born in Miami, Florida, is a college-educated Marine veteran and one of nine children. Known as the "human spirit whisperer," he has devoted 15 years to understanding human behavior and the impact of meditation and mindfulness on personal transformation. In 2018, Bostick founded Black Men Meditate to provide a safe space for men of color facing stress, anxiety, systemic racism, and societal biases. He is also a recognized financial leader with over 15 years of experience in financial management and consultation. Bostick believes that success in both business and life can be achieved through a focused and attentive mind, which he has achieved through his practice of meditation and mindfulness. He has worked with educational institutions to create mindfulness programs and has spoken at events such as the Clemson University National Men of Color Summit, the Global Society of Engineers, and education centers. He currently runs transformation programs for black male professionals. https://www.instagram.com/blkmenmeditate/?hl=en

At the time, no one knew the addictive nature of these drugs and John thought he was just having fun and experimenting. Eight years later, he realized he was trapped and could not stop using on his own. When he couldn't find any on the street, he turned to heroin, something he said he would NEVER do. Listen to John tell his story about how opioids highjacked his brain, stole years of his life and almost killed him. Despite knowing he was on a downward spiral for years, his family never turned their back on him. If you want to better understand the realities of opioid addiction and gain hope when it seems all is lost, listen to John Watson's story and you will know that everyone can recover.

Greg Williams blew the lid off of anonymity with his ground-breaking film The Anonymous People. Join youlearnyouturn as we discuss the need for the recovery community to level up even more, in the face of unprecedented substance use and mental health crisis. Greg goes deep into the need for systemic restructuring. We spent time on financial incentives and reimbursement. We address the need to move SUD services into mainstream healthcare settings. NO MORE blindly sending people off to rehab with false hope. If substance use disorder is a healthcare issue, let's treat it like a healthcare issue.

First Responders can be reluctant to seek help due to stigma and 7 in 10 say that mental health services are seldom or never used. First Responders are 5 times more likely to experience depression and PTSD. So why, as a society, are we expecting First Responders to raise their hand and say they have a problem? What if the worst of the judgment and stigma was coming from the very department that is supposed to have your back? Kristi Tausinga gives us a front-row seat to the challenges that come with being a First Responder, how the culture promotes a "don't show your weakness" mentality, and how her desperation eventually ended in her contemplating suicide. Thankfully, Kristi met our partners at Responder Health and over time is healing and sharing her story to give hope to other First Responders. We know that she will inspire others to seek help. This is another reminder that waiting for someone to raise their hand is a failed model. Youturn Health and Responder Health are reaching out and engaging with education and peer support- a winning combination with no rock bottom needed! Kristi was a first responder for 25 years, working in EMS, fire, and law enforcement. She worked in Law Enforcement for 21 and Fire/EMS for 4. Those years were divided up between The City of Winslow, AZ, and the state of Arizona. During that time, she was in Patrol, a sergeant, in administration, a school resource officer, and worked with the Department of Suicide and Domestic Violence (DV) as a liaison. Kristi was also on the Board of Directors for Alice's Place, which created a women's DV shelter. She also taught High School Criminal Justice classes and is a Federally certified Commercial Vehicle Inspector, AZPOST Genera Instructor, High-Risk Stop Instructor, Addiction Recovery Coach, and recovering addict. Kristi is currently retired from law enforcement and working as a substitute teacher at a local High School. Kristi has four kids (a grandbaby on the way) and a husband of 18 years, living in Nevada. She teaches private softball pitching lessons and umpires little league, when not following her teenager around to her games. https://www.linkedin.com/in/kristi-tausinga-7a75801a3/ https://responderhealth.com/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/sean-riley-0604a824/

Teen substance use is America’s largest, most preventable health crisis in America. 13 is the average age of first drug and alcohol use. 9 out of 10 addictions start in the teen years. Yet there are hardly any school-based drug prevention programs that reach adolescents at the crucial time of brain development when they are most susceptible to experimenting with or using drugs. "Just Say No" did not prove successful but RIZE is taking a different approach. By putting peers in the trenches they are empowering teens to make better choices. RIZE Prevention, created by Martine Helou-Allen, believes the only way to stop teen drug use and substance use disorder is to provide effective drug prevention along with a support system to help teens grow up drug-free. iRIZE by RIZE Prevention is an evidence-based, comprehensive school-based drug prevention program delivered in the Upstate. They use their signature Break Through - Follow Through approach in middle schools, starting in the 6th grade. Martine Helou-Allen is the founder and executive director of RIZE Prevention, a nonprofit in South Carolina that focuses on early prevention and intervention related to substance abuse and addiction. A graduate of Furman University, Martine’s passion for saving teens from the destructive and increasingly fatal consequences of drug use has enabled her to create innovative, evidence-based prevention programming that is delivered to middle schools, community organizations, and houses of worship. Prior to founding RIZE Prevention, Martine was the Community Relations Director at the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office, an experience that sparked her vision to create and deliver her first drug prevention program “Anything But Free” to teens throughout the state. Martine currently lives in Greenville with her husband Scott and her two sons, Sami and Michael. RIZE Prevention built its iRIZE program on the latest prevention and intervention science. They reach teens before their beliefs and attitudes about drugs have been formed. Treating teens with respect, they seek to empower them to resist drugs and make healthy choices by giving them knowledge about drug use, the skills to resist drug use, and the encouragement to exercise the power of positive choices. https://www.rizeprevention.org/ The cornerstone of RIZE success is its Break Through - Follow Through approach. They 'break through' teens' current perceptions to motivate a change in how they perceive drug use. They 'follow through' with the critical support needed to consistently make healthy lifestyle choices. The iRIZE approach encompasses three fundamental steps to empower teens to abstain from drug use and make healthy lifestyle choices: Enlightening them about how unmet

Every day we hear about the lack of care and services available for Veterans. A huge majority of veterans return home with PTSD and struggle to find their way-often turning to drugs and alcohol as a way to escape their pain. Over 22% of the annual suicides in the U.S. are military Veterans. Whatever is being done to help them is simply not enough. Youturn Health is using peer support specialists to bridge the gap and help Veterans in every facet of their lives. Zach Goff is the Director of Quality & Compliance at Youturn Health and a former veteran and Youturn Health Coach. He has lived experience and a passion for helping others. Having overcome an opioid addiction himself, he has made it his mission to create a force for change using Veterans who have overcome their struggles to be a part of his team. Our Chief Clinical Officer, Rich Jones, and Zach sat down with Veterans Rob Reveles and Freddie McAbee. As they talk, we are able to pull back the curtain on what it is like to be a veteran today and how their experience is helping them form a bond with struggling veterans.

Kristen Tomlinson is an experienced grief counselor and advocate for families who choose to honor their loved ones through the gift of life. Kristen is the Director of Grief Support services at Taylor's Gift and the Caring Guide and Kindred Hearts Coordinator for Taylor's Gift Foundation and Youturn Health. She joins Liz on the podcast to talk about her passion for helping donor families move through the complicated grief of losing their loved ones while having the unique opportunity to save someone's life. There are over 100,000 individuals waiting for an organ donation in this country. Having a conversation about organ donation with a loved one not only gives the gift of life to the recipient but can help ease the process of donation. Organ donation creates a mix of emotions from grieving your loved one to gratitude that their organs will save lives. Having gone through this painful process of losing their daughter Taylor in a ski accident, Todd and Tara Storch decided to embark on a mission to provide support tailored to donor families. Their non-profit, Taylor's Gift, was created to make sure that no donor family walks through the donor process alone. Through the Kindred Hearts Program, they provide a personal Caring Guide as well as access to support groups with trained facilitators who have experienced similar pain and trauma. In 2016, Kristen started her donation career at Community Tissue Services in the Donor Referral Center taking incoming referrals and approaching families. She then worked her way up to Supervisor of the department and helped with process improvements and staff support. She also spent time working for Life Connection of Ohio, the OPO servicing Dayton and Toledo, as the first Family Services Coordinator where she was able to help build the program and serve donor families in her hometown. Prior to joining Taylor’s Gift Foundation, Kristen was the Donor Center Quality Control Coordinator for Miracles in Sight, the Eye Bank working in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Austin, Texas. Kristen has also served as a Caring Guide and Kindred Hearts Coordinator for Taylor’s Gift Foundation and YouTurn Health. Kristen’s passion for family support began at the tender age of 17 years old when she sat by the bedside of a dear friend who died of cancer and became a cornea donor. Kristen would drive 60 miles one-way to be with her friend and his family, offering support during such a hard time; This experience was the catalyst that led her to this career path. Most recently, the loss of her beloved grandfather at the height of COVID fueled Kristen’s passion to ensure no family should suffer alone. In her free time, Kristen loves to read, write, travel, and spend time with her family and friends. She is married to her best friend, Tory, with whom she shares two beautiful children. https://www.taylorsgift.org/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/kriste

The amount of quality sleep directly affects our mental health. Experts say we need between 7-9 hours a day in order for our bodies and minds to fully recover. Adults who sleep less than 7 hours each night are more likely to say they have had health problems, including heart attack, asthma, and depression . (cdc.gov) Shift workers, such as Frist Responders tend to get 2-4 hours less than required, and a lot of the time these hours are broken up throughout the day. Chris Crowley and Danielle Cook explain the importance of sleep on our physical and mental health while also giving practical solutions to those whose job does not allow for 7-9 continuous hours of rest. Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness. It is estimated that 8 million Americans have an eating disorder. These numbers seem bleak, but there is hope and a healthier way to live and love your body. After years of being a professional gymnast, Natasha Houston found her dream job as an Orange Theory Fitness coach. On the podcast, she shares her story of living with an eating disorder, why she believes it started, and how she is learning to love herself and her body. Like everything in life, her recovery journey is filled with peaks and valleys. At Youturn Health we know that by talking about our mental health, no matter where we are in the journey, we will reduce stigma and ultimately invite others to raise their hand and ask for help. Thank you, Natasha, for joining our mission, being vulnerable enough to share your story, and making it ok to discuss eating disorders and body image. https://www.nationaleatingdisorders.org/help-support/contact-helpline https://anad.org/ https://equip.health/ https://connectionswellnessgroup.com/ All stats below are listed here: https://www.nationaleatingdisorders.org/statistics-research-eating-disorders -Eating disorders are serious and sometimes fatal illnesses that cause severe disturbances to a person’s eating behaviors. Obsessions with food, body weight, and shape may also signal an eating disorder. Common eating disorders include binge eating disorder, bulimia nervosa, and, less common but very serious, anorexia nervosa. -Among female high school athletes in aesthetic sports, 41.5% reported disordered eating. They were eight times more likely to incur an injury than athletes in aesthetic sports who did not report disordered eating -In a study on social media, nearly all girls (95%) say they see the onslaught of negative beauty critiques on social media posts, comments, photos, and videos, and a majority see them at least once a week (72%) and wish social media were a space that empowered body positivity (62%). -According to Common Sense Media, 41% of teen girls say the use social media to “make themselves look cooler.” Teens feel pressure to look good and cool online, but also feel social media helps their friendships and connections. -One study of teen girls found that social media users were significantly more likely than non-social media users to have internalized a drive for thinness and to engage in body surveillance. -Another study found social media use is linked to self-objectification, and using social media for merely 30 minutes a day can change the way you view your own body.

Erin Craw's father was a police officer. When she was a young girl, she remembers her father being very different when he came home from a shift. The loving man she knew when he left the house was in stark contrast with the quiet and moody man who came home. She didn't understand the horrors he witnessed every day. Over the years she learned that what he dealt with on a daily basis at work had a profound effect on all facets of his life. But no one said a word. The mental health of first responders was not ever discussed at this time. Fast forward to today, where Erin shares her frustration that "mental health" has become the buzzword offering empty promises and programs that are not being used. She is on a mission to change all of that. Here is her story. About: Erin Craw is a third-year doctoral student at Chapman University studying communication with an emphasis on health and interpersonal communication. She earned a bachelor’s degree in communication and journalism from the University of Connecticut and a master’s degree in health communication from Fairfield University. Erin received her First Responder Support Certification in January 2021 and is currently working toward a certificate in Police Mental Wellness and Critical Incident Stress Debriefing through the College of Certified Psychophysiologists. Her research interests are at the intersection of health and interpersonal communication. More specifically, communication as it relates to social support, stigma, and resilience. Her master’s thesis focused on the barriers and facilitators of mental health-related disclosures in police departments. As the daughter of a police officer (37 years on the job in CT) and granddaughter of a firefighter (40 years on the job in CT), she has a true passion for research that informs mental health-related interventions for first responders, enhances communication surrounding mental health, and improves access to support. http://www.linkedin.com/in/erin-s-craw https://www.amazon.com/Emotional-survival-law-enforcement-officers/dp/0971725403

Jeni Cain is more than just the owner of an extremely successful boutique in Greenville, SC. Although she is quite impressive with her business acumen and top-notch fashion sense, you will learn from today's podcast that she can also play the part of therapist and cheerleader, winning you over with her infectious sunny outlook on life. She always says what you didn't even know you needed to hear. I personally always feel better after our conversations. So it's no wonder that she is an open book about her struggles with bulimia and anxiety. She is in recovery and openly talks about her journey in order to help others. Behind her smile, there is a depth of strength and experience that I wish I had access to when I was in college and struggled with an eating disorder. But like SUD, no one wanted to discuss it as it was deemed a moral failure or a sickness to be kept secret. If you have teens or young adults, let them listen to this one! Here are some stats from the South Carolina Department of Mental Health -Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness -Anorexia is the 3rd most common chronic illness among adolescents -95% of those who have eating disorders are between the ages of 12 and 25 -50% of girls between the ages of 11 and 13 see themselves as overweight -80% of 13-year-olds have attempted to lose weight -studies show that about two-thirds of people with eating disorders also suffer from an anxiety disorder @monkeesofthewestend @jenicain

Katie Niemczyk wanted to be a teacher. In fact, she hoped for a long career teaching in communities where she hoped she would make a difference. The first part of her career was great but she quickly began to see that the education system was flawed and needed an overhaul. She continued to ask for help, hoping to make incremental changes where she could but when Covid hit, she made the choice to leave teaching to take care of her own mental health as well as the physical health of her two small children. Katie wants people to recognize that teachers have real lives outside of the classroom and the compensation does not equal the emotional demands required for teaching. Hopefully, this is the beginning of a paradigm shift in the education system where we wake up and realize that the most important pieces of the system, our teachers, have reached the breaking point. https://www.huffpost.com/author/katie-niemczyk https://ktnim2255.wixsite.com/katie-niemczyk https://www.tiktok.com/ @ktnim2255?_t=8V7BFZrsBZ5&_r=1 https://www.instagram.com/ms_nimmy2255/ https://twitter.com/ktcams https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100083790985311

ABOUT Sarah in her own words: I’m Sarah and I’m a recovering perfectionist and a serial burnout-overachiever. I’m also the Founder and Creator of Dreamgarten, a mom to two boys and a rescue dog, and a certified Qoya dance movement instructor. I started Dreamgarten because I see myself in so many other people who are showing up in their lives with this idea of perfection and the need for achievement in their work, in their relationships, and everywhere in between. And as a result, they are constantly navigating the overwork – burnout cycle, sometimes without even knowing what’s happening to their minds and bodies as a result. In my own quest for perfection and achievement, I put myself last, made myself smaller, and burned myself out over and over again. Throughout school and into my professional life, I would work myself to sickness (mental or physical), take a vacation or a leave of absence and then go right back to it. Over time and to cope, I began to study methods to manage my own severe anxiety through yoga and dance. I started to unravel my perfectionist, burnout-overachiever tendencies and help foster a deeper connection to my mind and body. I started to make space for a life that was less a pursuit of perfection and achievement and more a pursuit of grace, of spaciousness, of beauty, of meaning, of feeling everything, so that I could decide what was the next right action for me. At the same time, in my professional life, I began to create new ways of working because of the personal work I was doing myself. And vice versa, I started to apply the human-centered, design thinking methods I used to facilitate business problem solving to my personal questions. The more I practiced these methods, the more they worked their magic, and it’s scientifically based magic at that! That’s where Dreamgarten was born, at the intersection of my own experiments to recover from burnout and my realization that I was not alone in placing society’s definition of success on my shoulders and seeking perfection and achievement to accomplish it. I began to use my methods at work as a leader with my team and with my friends in their personal endeavors. I believe that when you guide people to find what’s inside themselves and encourage them to think about the human at the center of any problem, the creativity they bring to solving those problems is endless. https://www.linkedin.com/in/sarahcwaylett/ https://www.amazon.com/Burnout-Secret-Unlocking-Stress-Cycle/dp/198481706X https://dreamgarten.com/

After receiving the life-saving gifts of treatment and recovery, Randy completed his A.S. degree in addiction counseling at Minneapolis College in 2015 and worked as a full-time counselor for 2 years at RS EDEN/Eden House Recovery Services – the very same treatment facility where he was once a client. Randy served as a Board of Directors member for the Steve Rummler Hope Network, the organization responsible for passing Steve’s Law in 2014. In February 2018 Randy stepped down as a board member and was hired as the full-time Overdose Prevention Manager. He is grateful to know because of those sentencing guideline changes, approximately 700 less people will be incarcerated yearly because they have the disease of addiction. In March 2019 Randy decided to follow is passion and venture out on his own and started Bold North Recovery and Consulting. https://www.boldnorthrecoveryandconsulting.com/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/randyaanderson/

Police officers and other First Responders are put in life-or-death situations every day. Over time, the emotional toll can be so significant that it leads to mental health challenges. A no-brainer approach would be to have programs and counselors in place to support these brave men and women. Unfortunately, the programs in place are rarely used due to stigma. Officers would be very hesitant to tell anyone in the organization what was really going on in their heads for fear of losing their job or their credibility. Rich and Sheila Goode, a former police officer, discuss the need for support that sits OUTSIDE of the organization. The officers will feel more comfortable asking for help if it's done in private. Listen as Sheila describes what it's like behind the scenes for First Responders and what would really help them get the mental health support they deserve. About Sheila: VP of Clinical Services at Lucent Health Former Police Officer About Lucent Health: Lucent Health is a leading third-party administrator serving the self-insured employer market, with a fully integrated care management solution. The McShin Foundation was founded in 2004 by husband and wife duo John Shinholser and Carol McDaid to fill a void they saw in the care of Richmonders seeking recovery. John left a lucrative painting business to start the foundation and Carol is a veteran lobbyist for mental health and drug policy at the federal level. Hatcher Memorial Baptist Church opened their doors to McShin, offering office space when no one else was receptive to the idea of a recovery organization. From two offices in the basement of a church, McShin has grown into the organization it is today, including a 15,000 square foot recovery center and over 100 recovery residence beds in Richmond and the surrounding areas. Both in long-term recovery themselves, John and Carol continue working daily to combat Substance Use Disorders and help people start their recovery journey. The mental health support for First Responders needs to be greatly improved. First responders are at a greater risk for PTSD and suicide than most other occupations due to the trauma they witness every day. They face life or death on any given day and witness horrific situations. The need for resources and support for them has never been greater. Stephen Balzano is a retired Deputy Sheriff who openly discusses his experiences while on active duty. He painstakingly details the day he lost one of his "brothers in blue," and acknowledges the lasting effects of that trauma on many of his friends on the force. Stephen explains how difficult it is for police officers, or any First Responders to ask for help and says it needs to be a safe place outside of the system where they can get help. He is putting his experience to good use as, after being trained, he is now a coach on the Youturn Health platform. No doubt he will help many of his peers along the way.

Lilli Correll is a champion of value-based care rooted in patient-centric therapy. She and Rich are very much aligned in the belief that the healthcare system is broken and mental health providers need to meet the patient where they are. Lilli's work on her own trauma and mental health enables her to treat people with empathy and compassion. How wonderful our world would be if all providers put the patient first? In her own words: Biography I have over 20 years of corporate leadership experience in healthcare. The majority of my time has been spent either inventing or reinventing programs that directly impact bottomline targets and improve quality and outcomes for the individuals we serve. I have experience in the private and public sectors, in various roles from clinical operations to network development and including P&L responsibility. I am committed to bring leadership excellence to whatever I do, and was privileged to graduate from the UHG Executive Development Program which included executive training at Stanford University in 2019. Similar to last week's episode, this was recorded during the pandemic with Rich interviewing college kids about anxiety, depression, and substance misuse. Ironically, a positive that has come out of the pandemic is the mental health of young adults is finally being addressed. But what is the culprit? Some would argue that the uncertainty, online classes, and the lack of social opportunities are the main issues. But what if the pandemic was just the catalyst that brought the anxiousness of this generation bubbling to the surface? What is going on that so many of these young people are on anti-anxiety and antidepressant medications? Why is someone having a panic attack as common as someone having a cold? We have got to do better. At HeritageCARES, we certainly don't have all the answers but we believe that facilitating open discussions is the first step to creating solutions for the rising numbers of anxious and depressed young people. We are losing WAY too many to suicide and overdoses and as the pandemic begins to fade we are left with the important task of creating strategies to help these young adults. By reducing social media exposure, teaching them how to cope with uncertainty, and how to rely on themselves, not alcohol or drugs to navigate the world, we will make some headway. This is a TALL order you say? We are up to the task. Please join us on our mission!

MUST LISTEN EPISODE! This was recorded during Covid and sadly the issues surrounding mental health and substance misuse among college students have gotten even worse in the last few months. The son and nephew of our co-founder, Shay Houser, give us a raw and honest description of what is really going down on college campuses. Depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation are prevalent among young adults and these often lead to substance misuse as a way of finding relief. Let's sound the alarm, get focused, and implement solutions that will actually be helpful and not just check a box. https://www.whatgoodlookslikellc.com/ https://leslieshope.org/leslie-weirich/ https://annemossrogers.com/

Thank you Robert Lubran for your tireless advocacy for Medically Assisted Treatment of Opioid Use Disorder. Your accomplishments exemplify the notion that slow and steady wins the race. We appreciate your taking the time to educate us and our audience on the back story of MAT. My interest is in advancing the treatment of substance use disorders. Accessing treatment for many people is a difficult challenge because of the limited availability of treatment providers, lack of insurance coverage, inadequate information about treatment effectiveness, and stigma against the disease of addiction. I retired after 39 years of federal service with the Veterans Administration and 26 years at the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment, SAMHSA, where I headed the Division of Pharmacologic Therapies under the direction of Westley Clark, MD, JD, MPH. Now I am a consultant on the use of medications for opioid use disorder. I chair the Board of Danya Institute, an organization that operates SAMHSA grants. I am a Board member of the National Alliance for Medication Assisted Recovery and Stop Stigma Now. I co-chair the Education Committee of the Maryland/DC Society of Addiction Medicine. Tom and Jenn Satterly are all about helping veterans and their families. Tom is a retired CSM Delta Force and Jen Satterly was previously embedded in Realistic Training Missions with Special Operations units as Director of Film and Photography. When their relationship began, Tom was not in a good place mentally, but could not figure out what was causing his anger and excessive drinking. He finally had a therapist explain to him that he was suffering from PTS and needed to deal with it. From that point on, things slowly began to change and as he began to help others, he truly found his calling. Their mission is to help Veterans returning home but more importantly to support the family. They know that helping the family members is a huge piece of the puzzle. Learn more about their foundation and their Books below: Command Sgt. Major (ret.) Tom Satterly served in the Army for 25 years, 20 of those years were spent in the military’s most secretive and elite Special Operations unit, Delta Force. As an Operator and CSM, Tom fought in and lead countless high profile military missions including Operation Red Dawn (Saddam Hussein’s capture) and the Battle of Mogadishu (Black Hawk Down) which was the longest sustained firefight since Vietnam. That 18-hour firefight ended with Tom, along with several of his team mates, running the Mogadishu Mile to safety. Although the physical, mental, and emotional toll of war had compounded over the years, Tom never faced his Post-Traumatic Stress symptoms and in 2013 he nearly ended his life. Had it not been a text from his now wife, Jen, he would have joined the 22 veterans who commit suicide every single day. As Director of Film and Photography of an elite Special Operations training company, Jen embedded with Navy Seals, Green Berets, and Army Rangers in (RMTs) Realistic Military Training exercises sometimes for weeks at a time. During this time, she began to notice the same symptoms Tom was battling and began to ask questions. What was being done? Who is helping our warriors on the homefront heal? Who is helping the families with secondary PTS? She didn’t like the answers and became certified in health and wellness to better understand PTS and the body. Tom and Jen decided something had to be done and the work they did together training and preparing warriors to fight overseas turned into a mission of helping warriors and their families fight the silent war and to heal from it on the homefront. The Satterly’s founded All Secure Foundation in August 2017 as a resource library for helping warriors and their families navigate the maze of treatments and modalities of healing from PTS. They have worked individually with hundreds of warriors and their families and soon became more than a referral website but also a provider of education, awareness, and programs for healing. In 2019 ASF launched one of the only programs in the country for warrior couples to

William Stoehr paints with passion and purpose because for him, it's personal. Bill lost his sister to the disease of addiction, and watching her struggle, he quickly learned the injustice of stigma associated with substance use disorder and mental health. His paintings portray both loss and hope all at the same time. He is able to humanize those struggling while also showing the resilience and hope that are universal. He just may be the link that helps someone decide there is hope after all. Can art really save lives? Bill is proving it is possible. His work is exhibited internationally at universities, art centers, museums, and galleries. Chris Marshall's mother told him she had $10,000 put aside for his funeral. Her only ultimatum? He was not allowed to die in her house. You see, Chris had struggled with anxiety and depression and used alcohol to cope. He could no longer quit on his own, so his mother, exhausted from years of trying to save him, told him it was treatment or go die somewhere else. Fast forward to today where Chris is the owner of the successful alcohol-free bar, Sans Bar, is thriving in his recovery and has a family of his own. Hear how he turned his life around and continues to help others daily by enabling connection with his bar and many other activities that bring people together. My favorite quote from our time together was "nothing grows in isolation." This episode gave me hope that the tide is turning and that social events will revolve less around alcohol and more about connection.

Rich and Sean discuss how the "recovery" world of Substance Use Disorder is beginning to change and evolve beyond the 12-step model and touch on the things that have helped him to grow on his human journey. Sean Cuddihy has been mastering the art of connecting Behavioral Health Organizations to the people they serve for over 3 years. Through Brand Therapy and Multimedia Production work Sean has figured out the most authentic and most affordable way to show the people who use your services that it is not just a business and that it's not just about making money. In 2018 Sean started "Room 9". Starting out as just a podcast and then with the backing of a grassroots growing effort, Room 9 was eventually featured in "Podcast Business Journal" and received an $11,000 grant from the New York State Education Department. Sean has been on both sides of the behavioral health world. He has used their services and is now working with them. By using Brand Strategy, Podcasting, Video Production, and Design Sean's mission is to pull the veil back and RADICALLY TRANSFORM the way behavioral health organizations connect with the people who use their services. Our conversation with Anne Philippi is so fascinating that we had to make it 2 episodes. Anne is the Founder and CEO of The New Health Club. We will let her bio speak for itself. As a writer for VOGUE and GQ, I interviewed rock stars and actors for many years. I was fascinated by the world of show business, Hollywood, and celebrity. In 2007, I joined the German Vanity Fair and gained creds as the expert of record on the glamour world. Naturally, I moved to the heart of glamour and glory in 2009 to work as the Hollywood reporter for GQ Germany, also as a regular contributor for "Süddeutsche Zeitung," spoke to all the big Hollywood names. In 2015 my first novel called "Giraffen" was published (Kein&Aber), and I started to turn to a different kind of storytelling: more personal, more digital-friendly, faster, constructed like a new TV Show. I also started to develop a massive crush on technology, Silicon Valley, and the digital world, which began to affect my writing, aka storytelling plus my preferred subjects more and more. So I got into that world, moderated panels at the DLD conference in New York City. At the TEDx conference at Berliner Philharmonie, I had my first talk about why we need to disrupt the old idea of life after 40. I am now the California expert for "Frankfurter Allgemeine Quarterly" regularly reporting on California culture, tech, digital trends and new developments like the new luxury cannabis market and the return of psychedelic tools and therapies, which I am very passionate about. I am the founder of THE NEW HEALTH CLUB: a lifestyle platform for the new mental wellness and the new use of psychedelics I am pro Caffeine.

Dr. Alain Litwin joins us today to discuss the substance use disorder epidemic that has been ripping through our country for decades. We discuss stigma, deaths of despair, medication-assisted treatment, and the co-occurring infectious disease epidemic. We also spend some time on the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on people with substance use disorder. What we really face in America today is a syndemic. A syndemic occurs when multiple epidemics arise simultaneously. These epidemics feed off of one another in a synergistic manner creating a much more difficult and complex scenario. Along with the opioid epidemic, Dr. Litwin has been involved on the front lines of the HIV epidemic and the Hep C epidemic. He provides a very unique and insightful look at these unprecedented issues. Join us for a one of kind exploration of the syndemic.
