We are a family like every other family. We have high points, low points, and struggles. The goal is to start and end our day joyfully. We will be sharing our successes, trials, and tribulations, questions or situations that come up in our family or in each of our lives. We will also share how we support each other in dealing with life struggles. Our intent is to create a take-away of how we problem solve a bad situation into a joyful one.

Send us a text This episode is hosted by Hunter. To be completely honest, we were having a hard time finding a moment we could all sit down together to record so he took the bull by the horn and did his own episode. We had no idea what he was going to talk about until he recorded it. He "killed" it. Maybe he said the title of our podcast wrong, but he definitely knows what to talk about when it comes to creating JOY. Send us a text This topic came up at the end of our dinner time. Addison announced she wanted to talk about something. This is the usual in the Raymond Household. Important topics come up during our dinner time. I pulled out my phone and started the voice recorder. She pitched us in making her curfew later...to 12:30 or sometimes to 1:00 am. What are her reasons? She wants to practice time management before she goes to college in a year and a half. How do Mark and I respond? We have similar responses however we do disagree in some parts of this. With that being said, curfew is a struggle for us because Addison does not always have a set plan of what her friends and her are doing. We do not want her driving all around town at night so how do we come up with an appropriate curfew time? She has to have more of a solidified plan of what she is doing in order for us to be comfortable making her curfew later. And it depends on what is happening the next day as well. Listen in as to what we decide. Our goal is to make sure everyone is feeling good at the end of the conversation, to avoid anger and frustration, and to keep navigating JOY in our household. Please share this with ONE person who you know will take value in this. Someone who has teens or will soon have teens and wants to hear how we navigate these conversations. Send us a text Ahhhh, social media! The bane of my existence with my children! The 13 year old is pitching his reasons why he wants Instagram! We let his sister get Snapchat when she was 13 and if we could rewind, we would NOT have allowed that for at least a couple years later! So now Hunter is trying to convince us why he wants IG. There are very clear reasons why as you will hear in this episode. Adding social media comes with a host of problems such as; more time spent on the screen, arguing about screen time, posting, strangers, fake crap, social pressures, and many more issues. As Mark and I navigate this discussion, we work on keeping it real and light with low reactivity. However you can tell at the end of the conversation, Hunter is not thrilled with the outcome. Since we did not receive clear reasons why we did not say "yes", he was not happy about it. We even added some teen slang into the conversation to keep it fun and light. Do you think there were some clear, good reasons as to why Hunter should get IG? Tell us why or why not and how have you navigated these conversations with your teens? Send us a text This episode was recorded right before the holidays. I found an interesting article in the AARP magazine that talked about memory and steps on how to improve your memory. Even though AARP is for "old" people there were some great pieces of information about the distractions that notifications play in our lives. Every time our phones beep, we pick up the phone immediately and it derails our brain from the task we were focused on. It actually takes some time for use to refocus. I have learned that coming to the table with data and research is much better than dictating something without any back ups. So instead of saying..."Your phone is not allowed to be with you during homework." I have learned that bringing in the research as to why phones should not be close when doing homework. That is why I shared this article. This brings in a conversation of multitasking and the impossibility of it even though we think we can do it. Do you think you can muli-task? We then move to our screen time check. It is pretty funny to hear where we are all at what our goals are. If we do not check our screen time numbers than we do not know how much time we spend on our screens and it is actually very eye-opening. It is MUCH MORE than you expect!! I challenge you to look at your screen time each week. Our dinner dialogues are fun and make me laugh often. Please share this episode with ONE person you know who will LOVE it and gain value. Our goal is to show others that all families can NAVIGATE JOY TOGETHER. Drive-A-Logue link: https://drivealogue.com/?sca_ref=4141865.xLTkWKLvJW Put NJT in the coupon box for a 20% discount! Send us a text Jennifer Faye Colombo is a watercolor artist living in Connecticut. Her intention is to give the viewer an opportunity to tune into calm, peace and joy through her various collections. Jen is super grateful to live near the water, her happy place that influences many of her paintings. In addition to painting, Jen creates journals and card decks to support others on their journey. A Pocket Full of Joy is one of her card decks created as reminders to find joy daily including the little moments. Her Card Deck was written by accident after writing different affirmations and reminders for herself. If she needed the reminders to tap in and tune into joy daily, then others need that too. She always thought that JOY was the bigger thing in life, like our JOYFUL occasions but there are little things throughout the day that can bring us JOY and if we take a pause and start to notice them. Some examples: noticing the dew drops on the blade of grass or a delightful conversation can add up to big JOY moments! You could just spend a few seconds to tap into JOY. She loves sharing her paintings with others. Sharing her art with others is how she serves others in bringing JOY into their lives. She creates general art and personal art for people. Her work has intentions behind it. Jen always asks her clients to set an intention with her of why they want her to work with them. Setting the intentions makes a deeper, more impactful feeling for those who view the art. One general piece of art she shares with others are her ¨Joyful Bubble¨ paintings. She receives lots of comments on how happy they make people. It brings back memories of playing with bubbles and a reminder to tune into those bubbles of joy. She is the conduit to pass that joyful energy onto the page. Her clients and her are co-creating together even though she is the one doing the artwork. She also creates creative exploration with others. She gets them to tap into their own creative flow. It can be artwork, or setting intentions. People find it relaxing, fun, playful and JOYFUL! Creating SHOULD be fun! Jen always creates for herself to help her move through emotions. It is for her own pure JOY and entertainment. How else does Jen tap into JOY when she is not in that flow? She pulls from her own card deck Painting Going down to the beach Put on music Dance partners Her last piece of advice: ¨Everyday be conscious of cultivating JOY in your life.¨ Ask the question: What brings me JOY and can I do that today? Such a powerful conversation with Jen! How to connect with Jen: 9 IG: www.instagram.com/jenfayeart FB: <a href='http://www.

Send us a text I love our family dinners! This is the time for us to connect about our day, what is happening personally and to hold family meetings. Our favorite place to hold these meetings is at the dinner table. This week we discuss our puppy, Pearl, who is getting into items that are left out, specifically food. We also discuss with the kids their future in their orchestra for the remainder of the school year, and finally how to make some changes in cleaning up things that do not get cleaned up regularly by ALL of us! Why are we discussing all of this? So Mom does NOT have to keep nagging everyone about it. Yep, I do because clean up does not get done and violin practice is NOT happening consistently! We all know that nagging is a huge JOY CRUSHER! Who wants to be nagged? And who wants to nag? You will hear how we navigate these topics with the kids and as a family, keeping the emotion low and the fun up all the while coming to some conclusions! Send us a text This episode is a wonderful conversation with Liz Carroll who shares her experience with JOY. Liz Carroll is a life-long student and teacher of making mindful money moves. Originally believing she was "bad with money," Liz did the hardwork to rewrite her money story. She needed to drop limiting beliefs about how a woman can earn and manage money to set her up for financial success in a way she would commit to and follow. It worked. Liz attained financial independence and retired early from her corporate IT sales career. Now, in her encore career, Liz helps other women experience calm confidence with their finances by unpacking and shifting their own money story. She has the unique ability to shed light onto darkness around money, making complex personal finance issues simple. She created the Mindful Money Method, a financial wellness course and coaching program that utilizes a holistic approach to math, mindset and soul-guided desires. Liz is a Certified Financial Coach from Ramsey Solutions, a Certified Life Coach from The Life Coach School and a 200-RYT Yoga & Meditation Instructor from Purna Yoga College. She and her husband live on the Oregon Coast.Their adult children visit regularly. Liz shares how she intentionally planned a "Year of Joy" trip for her 50th birthday. Yes, she preplanned her budget and started saving. Everything she did in her "Year of Joy" were experiences except for one item she purchased. We discuss the importance of how experiences can continue to bring JOY for a lifetime compared to material items. Plus we discuss that one doesn't need a lot of, or any money to create JOY. There are many "free" things that can be done that bring JOY. We also talk about what Liz does, and how she helps other women create a more abundant and financially sound life. Send us a text Another one of my favorites that I can listen to again and again! In this episode, we talk with Michael Jann and Michele Jourdan. Michael is an Emmy-nominated late-night comedy writer for The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon . Michele is Mike’s wife, writing partner, and a gold-medal-winning body-builder. She likes working out so much, she actually married a dumbbell: Mike. Their story is deeply personal: Their 27-year-old son Max’s mental breakdown, hospitalization, diagnosis, and ongoing recovery (fingers crossed), fuel their passion to fight the stigma of mental illness. You can’t solve a problem if you can’t talk about it. BUG THERAPY uses humor and entertainment to break the ice. Listen in on some wonderful insight about BUG THERAPY, mental health, and JOY. Michael and Michele share where their idea for BUG THERAPY came from and the personal connection they have to it. They want to share with others that it is ok with whatever is going on in one's life and it's ok to get support. This short film has already brought out a clear, powerful message and has been used all over. Plus, hear their plans for the next step of this movie. They also share with us their personal experience with mental illness and their son, how they have navigated what was happening and how laughter, gratitude, and exercise created joy to help them get through what was happening with their son. Send us a text It is SUMMER!!!! School is out, activities and sports are done, now it is time to play and relax! How do we still make sure we read, limit screen time, not argue about the things that frustrate us, and use our time together to have FUN and create JOY? Mark came up with three questions for us to think about at the beginning of June. 1. What do we want to for reading this summer? 2. What does screen time look like? 3. What is it that makes you frustrated that creates nagging, being nit picky, and creates negative energy. We thought about these questions for two days and then we discussed them at one of our family meeting table talks. We all came up with goals. Now that is is July 1st, it is time to revisit them. This episode shares our goals for each question and we reflect on our progress. How do we alter our reading goals since NO ONE has read except Mom? What will make it interesting? How are we doing on our screen time and how can we adjust and get better? Are we all following our agreements to eliminate the anger and frustration with the common problems that create JOY crushers? This conversation is our normal table talk when we have our family discussions. There is a lot of laughter as we figure out what our next steps are to navigate JOY together! Send us a text I'm so excited to share this conversation with Martha McBride. We connected over social media and found we have a lot in common, especially our goal to live in JOY daily. Martha shares her experience with a bad breakup that led to depression and how she was then able to get out of that. She also shares how she knows she is living in a state of JOY each day. One way she knows is if she is singing. Not just songs on the radio but even when she can't find her keys. Haha! I love it! She also shares how she consciously chooses JOY during daily tasks that "have to" be accomplished. Finally, we hear how she is sharing JOY with others, especially with women who are in perimenopause. How BRILLIANT is this! Menopause is something that isn't talked about and women have a negative connotation about this time of their lives. Martha really brings laughter, light, information, and JOY into a topic that we all think is so negative! Well, ladies...It DOESN'T have to be!!! Send us a text In this episode we share the importance of sharing highs and low as a family. They allow a family to connect with each other after a day apart, and opening up lines for deeper communication. We share how we do it and we even share our highs and lows that we had on this particular day. Take a listen and please share with us how you do this with your family. If you don't, start putting into practice. It may seem weird at first, but I guarantee it will create better and stronger communication with each other and help get past the "fine" as an answer. Send us a text Itś hard to find JOY when we are suffering from traumatic events whether past or present. I was looking up articles recently to see how JOY and trauma relate to each other and found this great blog post about it. https://tinybuddha.com/blog/why-joy-is-important-for-healing-developmental-trauma/ by Irina Bengston Even though it is specific to developmental trauma, I believe what the author says can be put into play in all kinds of trauma or when dealing with a traumatic event. I was looking for this information because of the last couple traumatic events my family has experienced. 1. Our 4 year old doggy dyeing unexpectedly in September 2. Our car burned down in our drive way just after we got out of it, in December. Both of these events have been very traumatic for us and we have been learning how to navigate and process them. My kids have not yet experienced death this closely yet and who experiences a car burning down in their driveway? I would think that is rare. This blog resonated with me. Here is what the author shares: Learn to tolerate difficult emotions. Live in the moment. Learn to calm yourself. Engage yourself fully. Help or share Choose joy. There are a few others so take a look at the post and see what else she has to day. https://tinybuddha.com/blog/why-joy-is-important-for-healing-developmental-trauma/ by Irina Bengtson Drive-A-Logue link: https://drivealogue.com/?sca_ref=4141865.xLTkWKLvJW Put NJT in the coupon box for a 20% discount! Tune in and be ready for some great take-aways from Liz. Send us a text You don't want to miss this episode!!! This is a very special, emotional episode for us. Hunter, Addison, and I sat down and had a session with Tami Hendrix, a Compassionate Medium and Healer. We lost our beloved Onyx, a 4-year-old black lab, suddenly and unexpectedly on Labor Day. We have had tremendous heartbreak these last few months as we have had to immediately navigate life without her and try to make sense of what happened. I was referred to Tami by my therapist and I am so grateful that I was. Since I have been following Tami I have learned a little bit about Onyx that I didn't know from some questions I had written into Tami early on and did a free reading on her bi-monthly classes she does. I shared this with my family and Addison and Hunter wanted to ask questions as well so we did a session with Tami. What did this session entail: Great things about Onyx. How she came to use. How she died. How to keep her energy with us by writing her letters, keeping a dream journal, and noticing when she is visiting us. Where she went after she died. Did she know we were with her when she died? Why she didn't like to swim And will she be ok if we get a puppy? Within all of these topics, we heard from Onyx as she answered many of these questions. This was an incredible session and it really helped us start to move on and accept what happened even though we miss her terribly and our hearts are still broken. The kinds of things that Onyx shared with us through Tami were incredible. It made us laugh and cry. If you are an animal lover we know you will relate and be able to empathize with this episode. We would love to know what you took away, what you learned, or what you thought. Drive-A-Logue link: https://drivealogue.com/?sca_ref=4141865.xLTkWKLvJW Put NJT in the coupon box for a 20% discount! Send us a text It's been at least 4 weeks since we put out an episode. Losing our sweet Onyx has made it very difficult to be focused on daily tasks. We are still grieving for our dear doggy. What have the last 7 weeks been like? We still cry as we are trying to navigate our lives without Onyx. Evenings, nights, and weekends are the toughest. What I have learned is that when my kids cry, I don't need to try to fix anything for them. I can't fix anything. I can't bring back Onyx so there is nothing I can do to fix this. As parents, we want to fix everything but we should get out of this habit. Children need to learn how to navigate these kinds of feelings and learn how to deal with them. What do we do when they are hurting and crying? We just let them cry, hold them, and listen if they want to talk. We don't offer any advice and we never say, "It will get better or be alright". This isn't the time for it. This is the time for them to just "be" in their grief and sadness for a bit. I also spoke to an Animal Medium named Tami Hendrix. She even spoke to Onyx for me and gave me some insight into our grief, heartache, and much more. It is fascinating what she said. We are excited to more information soon with Tami. Send us a text Jenna B is a wife, mother, and spiritually intuitive. Jenna has worn many hats in life trying to find her own purpose outside of the home. With a very supportive husband, Jenna had the time to sit and pray to find what she was meant to do. Jenna feels her purpose is to help, heal and spread love to others. Jenna and I discuss what transpired in her life to lead her to consciously choose joy every single day. She shares that she asks for ease, flow, and grace every single morning and with this, JOY naturally comes. However, there are times that she gets thrown off, as we all do, and she has to start over again. This is what living consciously to choose JOY is all about! Some of her go-to tools to get her back into JOY are playing some "fierce" Beyonce and dancing the negativity out of her. She also spends time working out. Moving her body is essential to keeping JOY at the forefront. She suggests if you are just starting out, go for a walk and listen to the birds. Jenna also shares where and how her family fits into this focus of consciously living in JOY. As a family, they communicate all of their feelings all the time. She has her son tell his emotions, goes to a chart, and figure out how to work through it. We also bring in our children to answer a few questions: What does Joy mean to you? Are you aware when you are not feeling happiness or joy? What is something that you do when you feel mad or sad to help you get happy again? What would you do if you saw a friend who was sad, mad, etc What is something you would tell your friends to help them be in a more joyful place? Hear their perspectives on what JOY means and looks like to them. One of the biggest takeaways I got from Jenna is what she says at the end. "The world is for you, not against you." What a great thought to focus on. This is when you can focus more on the little positives and find JOY daily. Send us a text My guest today is Michelle Ruddell. Michelle is a speaker, author, and semi-retired teacher who lives in Central Texas. She speaks to women's groups about how to find joy in the middle of tough circumstances. her book, "Welcome to the Club, I'm Sorry You're Here", was written to offer hope to grieving parents. Send us a text In this episode, we talk with Michael Jann and Michele Jourdan. Finally, hear their perspective on how JOY and mental health are connected. Send us a text It's fun getting together with family you haven't seen for a while. But how do you keep the JOY flowing instead of the arguments and negative situations? You create boundaries and expectations ahead of time. We just returned from a family trip with my brothers' families and mine celebrating our Mom's 80th birthday. We spent a week together at Folly Beach in South Carolina, all in the same rented VRBO. How do you set expectations: 1. Don't expect everyone to do the same thing at the same time. 2. Unplug 3. Don't bring up topics that create tension. I knew from 5 years ago what topic could not be discussed when we were all together. It was politics. My family is divided in their beliefs around politics and the state of our country, so I had to do something ahead of time. I sent out a message before we left to everyone setting some expectations. Basically, it was to respect everyone's beliefs and not to bring up the subject of politics as well as not watching news in front of each other. I continue to say that we all want this trip to be a joyful trip we all remember. I also challenged my own family to keep the JOY flowing with everyone. What was the outcome? A nice, JOYFUL trip with lots of happy memories that we can keep playing in our heads and NO talk about politics. It was AMAZING!!! Send us a text This will be our last one on Cultivating Joy in Children for a while as I will be bringing guests on who are experts in JOY. We have so many wonderful conversations coming up to share about JOY. Now on to this episode: Addison and I discuss how important it is to laugh. As adults we are much too serious and we don't tap into fun and laughter enough. Instead, we carry stress, worry, and anger. Those negative emotions have a traumatic effect on our bodies and lives. Instead, learn how to bring authentic laughter into your life. When you do, you are modeling for your children how important laughter is. Why is it important: It relieves stress Stimulates our organs Increases our endorphins It activates and relieves our stress response Soothes tension Improves immune system Helps relieve pain Improves our mood Addison and Hunter do hilarious things at home that make us laugh hysterical. Yes, there are times I'm tired and don't want to, but when I just let go and laugh, I feel so much better. It even gives me energy. Take time to laugh EVERY SINGLE DAY with your children. I can guarantee your family and household will be much happier!!! Drive-A-Logue link: https://drivealogue.com/?sca_ref=4141865.xLTkWKLvJW Put NJT in the coupon box for a 20% discount! Send us a text In this episode I have a candid conversation with Girl Dad Nation's Matthew Krekeler. He is the father of three young girls and has a podcast called Girl Dad Nation. We chat about how he keeps JOY alive in a house full of young children. He taps into his religion and how his religion helps him navigate JOY. Matthew talks about when he and his wife struggled with infertility and how he was able to let that go, tap into gratitude and JOY to then end up having 3 daughters. He also talks about how he and his wife keep JOY alive together while parenting, working, and taking care of all of life's needs. This conversation was very enlightening and every time I chat with someone about JOY I always learn something new on how I can shift a pattern and behavior to continue bringing more JOY into my and my family's lives. Send us a text Life is filled with difficult times so let's teach our children how to get through them. If they learn now they will be able to get through difficult times successfully as adults and become less anxiety ridden. In this episode I talk about the importance of why children need to know how to do this and how we can teach them to do this. How do we teach them? Respect their feelings. Don't sugar coat them. Don't tell them it's no big deal, don't tell them let it go. Instead, validate how they are feeling. You can say something like, "I can see why you are sad". Identify feelings. Allow yourself to feel them. Talk about feelings. Identify the physiological changes in your body when you have a feeling change. How can we feel better. Make a list of what you can do to feel better. Imagine your favorite place Take a walk Get a drink of water Take deep breaths Count to 50 Jumping Jacks Stretches Play a game Talk with someone you trust Use a fidget Draw Write in a journal Blow bubbles Read a funny book Color Build something Listen to relaxing music Take a break Take a shower/bath Use a calming jar Gratitude You can also remember these steps by using the acronym RAIN Recognize what you’re feeling. Let yourself be open to your emotions of sadness, anger, or fear, and name it. Allow it to be here. Let go of any agenda for it to change and, for a few moments, give it permission to be just as it is. Investigate how it feels in your body on an energetic level without getting into the story behind it or trying to get rid of it. Bring a curiosity or interest that involves simply exploring the landscape of your emotion without needing to figure it out. Non-identification —meaning, don’t take it personally; don’t assume the experience reflects who you are at your core. (For example, don’t say to yourself, “I’m an angry person.”) Recognize that everyone experiences emotions; they are part of the human condition. Open up to that truth and don’t let it define you. Send us a text In our series Cultivating Joy in Children, I talk about Gratitude. Why is it important for us to teach our children to be grateful? Gratitude is a JOY creator! Why do we want to teach our children gratitude? 1. Develop a feeling of empathy. 2. Teaches them to be more generous toward others. Why is this beneficial? 1. Less stress 2. More Positive 3. Happier and more joyful 4. They will perform better at school 5. May not be as materialistic. 6. Will be able to cope better in difficult situations which will help when they get older. 7. Focus better 8. Have fewer health problems. How do we do this? 1. Teach our children to say "Thank You". 2. Parents model this by telling their children why they are grateful for them. 3. Talk about things you are grateful for. You can use a jar and write down gratitudes or share at the dinner table one thing you are grateful for from the day. 4. Use nature. So start now with yourself and your children! Drive-A-Logue link: https://drivealogue.com/?sca_ref=4141865.xLTkWKLvJW Put NJT in the coupon box for a 20% discount! Send us a text Let's talk about how hugging can cultivate JOY in children. Hugging gets our oxytocin and serotonin chemicals flowing which provide a lot of benefits for our bodies. To give us even more benefit, make your hugs last a minimum of 6 seconds. That's when all our happy chemicals really start flowing. What does hugging do for children: 1. Helps kids grow 2. Keeps kids healthier 3. Stops temper tantrums 4. Builds Resilience 5. Make kids JOYFUL by Pamela LI https://www.parentingforbrain.com/children-hugging/ For us in general hugging: 1. Releases stress 2. Builds trust and safety 3. Boosts Dopamine 4. Increases self esteem 5. Helps reduces self-esteem I share some great quotes people have said about quotes but this is by far the best one: “We need 4 hugs a day for survival. We need 8 hugs a day for maintenance. We need 12 hugs a day for growth.” - Virginia Star Can you provide this many hugs a day for a minimum of 6 seconds? Send us a text Mark and I follow up on what we discussed in Episode 21. We come up with a plan on how to solve conflicts within our family. How do you make a plan? Take time to identify the following components: Who- Who are the key players involved in the conflict? What -What actions or behaviors created the conflict? What is each person's part? When -When does this conflict occur? Is there a pattern when a conflict happens? Why - Look in the mirror-How much of this conflict did I cause? How -How do we shift a behavior to take a step into resolving the conflict in a positive way? How do we use this plan? When a conflict arises, follow these steps: Take some time away to calm down. When our emotions go up, our intelligence goes down and we can't be successful in problem-solving. Each person takes time to identify the who, what, where, when, why, and how. Set up a meeting time to discuss what you jotted down. It doesn't have to be in that moment. We'd love to hear how this has worked for you. What have you tried, and what worked? What didn't work? Send us a text In this episode, Addison, Mark, and I sit down to discuss a situation that occurred and how Addison took action to create JOY for herself. We can either sit and wallow in our sorrow and sadness or we can do something about it. It isn't always cut and dry but there is always something we can do to create JOY at the moment. Addison stepped out of her comfort zone and TOOK ACTION to create JOY for herself in a disappointing situation. It is similar to savoring experiences which was discussed on episode 10. If you missed that one, go back and listen to it. Visualizing is another simple strategy one can put into place that will create JOY. You will learn: What visualization is Why people use it How you can use it to create JOY Some examples of how others have used it This strategy works amazingly. Send us a text This episode explains a situation that happened last week. Hunter had to get STITCHES which took him out of football. We sit and talk about the feelings this brought up. Was it anxiety or worry? Maybe both? This was definitely a JOY CRUSHING moment for all of us! Listen in while we explain the difference between anxiety and worry, how we deal with these feelings, and why it is important for parents to not fix everything, but instead, acknowledge their children's feelings and let them sit with those feelings. We also share a variety of calming strategies when anxiety and/or worry set in. Yes, these would also work for adults.
