Sally, Douglas, Mom, and Ma Fanny take the overnight train to Florida and have a pyjama party! Sally ain't impressed with their new apartment (not even a Murphy bed will change her mind) and has a truly terrible first day at school. Alison and Jody chat head lice, the Orange Blossom Express, braided coronets, and Ralph ashtrays from Hawaii. There's an update on Jody's correspondence with Rita Williams-Garcia, a fantastic bit of Margaret fan fic from Blume Head Helen, and dramatic reenactments that will make you feel like you're right there with the Freedmans.

"Starring Sally J. Freedman as Herself," chapters 2-3. Get out your pink Spalding ball and join us for this incredible Judy Blume novel. We're back in 1947: Sally eats tongue with raisin sauce, spends time in the BORDELLO bath tub, bosses her friends around, and learns she'll be spending the winter in Miami Beach! She also dreams up a thrilling story about saving Lila from the Gestapo and nursing her back to health with kosher salami on rye. Jody and Alison reenact all the classic scenes and provide an analysis of the Freedman goings-on. And finally, there's some new progress on the Margaret movie!

OMG, best chapters ever. We cover 28-30 of "One Crazy Summer" by Rita Williams-Garcia and cannot believe what just happened! No spoilers here, but we will tell you that Fern takes a turn, Delphine conquers her fears, and Vonetta is actually pretty chill. Join Alison and Jody as they reenact some epic scenes, including a go-kart challenge and the extremely successful Black Panther rally. They chat about poetry, freeze tag, and the potential origins of Ace of Base's megahit, "I Saw the Sign." Thank you SO much to our Patrons, and special shoutout to our newest members: Molly Patton, Erin MacKenzie Mower, and Jen Lener Kwass.

Get cozy for chapters 25-27 of Rita Williams-Garcia's "One Crazy Summer"! The Gaither sisters spend a magical day in San Francisco - they meet real live 1968 hippies, they eat fresh fortune cookies in Chinatown, and ride their first cable car to Fisherman's Wharf. The magical moment comes crashing down when they get back to West Oakland and find that... CECILE HAS BEEN ARRESTED! Aside from the usual dramatic readings and book discussion, Jody and Alison perform an incredible Judy Blume-themed comedy sketch submitted by a true Blume Head (thank you Michelle G!). They chat about the lie of Santa, the simulation we live in, and the time Jody spent the night in jail.

Join Alison and Jody for some snazzy jazz poetry, spoiled mulled wine, and chapters 22-24 of "One Crazy Summer" by Rita Williams-Garcia! Delphine gets her own second-hand kitchen stool and tries to teach Vonetta a Very Important Lesson about mothering. It doesn't work. Cecile/Nzila works her letterpress like the true kitchen poet goddess she is. The sisters set off for SAN FRANCISCO, but not before Hirohito Woods takes a moment to show off on his mystery vehicle. Do we detect a Delphine/Hirohito more-than-friendship?! Jody reads some excellent Blume Head memories of The Monkees, while Alison dons her beat poet cap (never forget "Now-Times for People With Now-Dreams").
Fri, November 20, 2020
Chapters 19-21 of Rita Williams-Garcia's "One Crazy Summer" (2010)! Delphine learns about Li'l Bobby Hutton, decides she doesn't wanna go to the Center anymore, and makes a new cool friend! Vonetta and Fern have show biz dreams and plan their song and dance routine for the big Black Panther rally. Cecile is still scary. Jody presents a mini Special Report on Bobby Hutton's 1968 murder at the hands of the Oakland cops, and there are two two juicy Blume Head letters about childhood boom boxes, bratty brothers, and Freckle Juice experiments. Alison and Jody also chit chat about toddler toilet pranks, Fisher-Price policemen, and reminisce about the Weekend at Bernie's beachside mansion.

Here we come... walkin' down the streeeeeet! Join us for chapters 16-18 of Rita Williams-Garcia's "One Crazy Summer" about three sisters spending time with the Black Panthers in 1968 Oakland. Delphine has words with Hirohito Woods and decides to cook an entire meal for her family (she's 11, y'all). We catch a glimpse of Cecile's mystery kitchen and see her ever-so-slightly softer side. The sisters decide they want a TV set and stage a living room protest – will they actually get one?! Jody and Alison chat about off-roading, Safeway, square eyes, and '90s boom boxes. And, as usual, they provide melodramatic readings and literary analysis.

Well helloooo! It's been a minute, Blume Heads! Note: this unreleased episode was recorded back in August (hence the references to summer and "Virgo Season"), but we will be back next week with more current recordings as per usual. This week we cover chapters 14-15 of "One Crazy Summer" by Rita Williams-Garcia. Vonetta ditches her sisters to join the mean Ankton girls and desecrates poor Miss Patty Cake with magic marker. Delphine defends Fern's honor and spends all her phone booth money on a Black Panther newspaper. Join us for more Chinese food dinners, dramatic readings, and TWO outrageous letters about My Buddy dolls.

Alison and Jody discuss chapters 11-13 of "One Crazy Summer" by Rita Williams-Garcia! The Gaither sisters stick around to attend the Black Panther Kids Club to learn about the Revolution but become a laughing stock when Vonetta and Fern embarrass Delphine with their enthusiastic outbursts. Delphine works up the guts to ask about Cecile's name change, and we finally learn what Nzila really means. Speaking of names, turns out Delphine hates dolphins, ESPECIALLY Flipper. But there's an Oreo cameo so we're all good. Jody and Alison talk about Scary Black Cherry bowel mishaps, youth groups, and read a great letter from Blume Head and NEW PATRON, Molly Patton!
Thu, August 13, 2020
Get out your white go-go boots and settle in for chapters 9-10 of Rita Williams-Garcia's "One Crazy Summer." Cecile sends her daughters out into the wild in search of breakfast. They have a stand-off with Beak Man over Miss Pattycake and eat cold eggs with orange slices. Al and Jody provide an insider exclusive about their "Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret" focus group and do an impromptu mini tarot sesh. There are two Special Reports on the name Inzilla (Nameberry says DON'T DO IT) and the historic rec center at Oakland's De Fremery Park. Keep listening for the usual dramatic readings and analysis, with plenty of off-topic discussion about Puffalumps, Go-Go the Walking Pup, My Buddy, and My Pretty Ballerina.
Thu, August 06, 2020
Chapters 7-8 of "One Crazy Summer" by Rita Williams-Garcia! Delphine, Vonetta, and Fern spy on a secret Black Panther meeting, put themselves to bed, and have an ice water standoff with Cecile. Thank you Blume Head Helen for her mini Special Report on Judy Blume in The Simpsons!
Thu, July 30, 2020
Order up some lo mein and a Pepsi, it's time for chapters 5-6 of "One Crazy Summer" by Rita Williams-Garcia! First and foremost, please excuse Jody's terrible sound quality (we blame Gremlins). Delphine and her sisters are starving, so Cecile barricades the verboten kitchen and sends them out to fetch dinner from Ming's. They make a pricey call to Big Ma and meet a boy with a Burning Man wheelchair. Back at home, Cecile is visited by three mysterious figures. Who could they be?! Jody recalls the time when she fielded collect calls from metalhead prisoners, and Alison reminisces about the time she was able to shower in the morning. There's dramatic readings, fabulous TV commercials from 1968, and some surprise cupcakes! What a night.
Thu, July 23, 2020
We're in Oakland, baby! Chapters 3-4 of Rita Williams-Garcia's "One Crazy Summer" (2010), the novel about three sisters spending the summer of 1968 with their estranged mother. Delphine and crew meet a shady-looking Cecile at the airport and are whisked away to the funky green stucco structure they'll be calling home for 28 days. We quickly learn that Cecile is no Carol Brady – what is going to happen to these poor children?! Alison recounts her very Sheila-esque shimmy through the garage window, and Jody reads a great letter from Blume Head Dustin about growing up with Judy Blume and his plans for an Otherwise Known as Sheila the Great birthday party (aka THE DREAM)! Lastly, thank you to all of our Patrons, we so appreciate you!

Alison and Jody begin their NEW Judy-adjacent book, "One Crazy Summer," by Rita Williams-Garcia (2010). The gals take you on a wild ride through the turbulent year of 1968 and discuss the events, music, entertainment, and fashion that made it so memorable – from neo-Edwardian fashion, to the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr., to Olivia Hussey's boobs, to the first Miss Black America pageant. Meanwhile, in the book, Delphine and her two younger sisters fly to Oakland to see their long-lost mother, Cecile. Delphine keeps her siblings in line, catches a glimpse of the Golden Gate Bridge, and has thousands of dollars burning a hole in her sock. To top it all off, there's a fabulous letter from Blume Head Amanda (who read Wifey in FOURTH GRADE) and a Law & Order / Doogie Howser mashup not to be missed. Oh, handle it ya slack-arse molls! We are starting a NEW BOOK, "Puberty Blues," written by Australian authors Kathy Lette and Gabrielle Carey in 1979! Travel with Jody and Al through chapters 1-2, to Sydney's southern beaches, where surfie chicks and spunky guys eat Chiko Rolls, wear straight-legged Levis, and suck whole oranges in the back of the bus. Protagonists Deb and Sue are two 13-year-old gals who just want to be part of the coolest crew around, the Greenhills Gang. Despite doing all the "right" things, they can't seem to break in — until a fateful call to the headmaster's office gets them noticed by top girls Tracey and Cheryl. To set the scene, Alison presents her findings on Young Talent Time, Luna Park, and 1979's top hits. Meanwhile, Jody gives the scoop on The Red Bikini Girl, the Truro Murders, and provides essential Aussie slang translation. Huge thank you to our very first Patreon donors: Katy Greenspan, Becky Tomkins, Jessica Going, Jessica Norton, Jack Knoebber, Schmoo Theune, Deanna McMillan, and Suzanne Krempasky! Be sure to join us at www.patreon.com/theblumesaloon

Alison and Jody chitchat with Amanda about her new book, “That's Mental: Painfully Funny Things That Drive Me Crazy About Being Mentally Ill” as well as British boarding school life, shoes with keys in the soles, the crazy-chic aesthetic of “Girl, Interrupted” and the nightmare of book promotion. There’s also a lot of Goosebumps, Point Horror, Adrian Mole, and Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul talk. Oh, and let’s not forget the iconic '90s-era Titanic Quiz. Do YOU know why Jack was allowed in the fancy dining room? Pre-order “That’s Mental” now! www.indiebound.org/book/9781684422890

A very special episode in which Jody and Alison wrap up 20+ weeks of Judy Blume’s “Summer Sisters.” The gals dig up Judy’s history with Martha’s Vineyard and her very own Psycho House, what inspired her to write the book, and which character she loves (but her husband hates)! There’s also a historically accurate reenactment of Lena Dunham’s 2014 interview, Vix and Caitlin fan fic readings, book reviews from internet randos, and some awesome Blume Head letters. Lastly, may we present a Special Report on Pseudocide, Steve Rambam, Frank Ahearn, skip tracers, death kits, and the hotness of Jonathan Groff. OH YEAH, AND THERE’S AN EARTHQUAKE! P.S. – We announce our next book at the very end, so keep your ears peeled.

It’s “Summer Sisters: The College Years” in chapters 26-27 of Judy Blume’s seminal adult novel. Vix is finally at Harvard, hating her roomie Maia and struggling with all the BS analytical chit-chat that surrounds her. Caitlin is still in Your-Up, making all sorts of late night calls and having dalliances with a woman who cuts up panties (hello, Rusty’s diaphragm!). Alison and Jody talk about freshman year dorms and roommates, celebrity charity supergroup pop hits, Charleston accents, and gonorrhea of the mouth. Big felicitations to this week’s Blume Head of the Week Samantha WM!

Lanie gets knocked up. Bru reveals his tragic past and does NOT wear a deep V-neck to the Flying Horses. Jody and Alison slosh rosé and chat toilet snacks, SATs, poetry, The Hills, carousels, anxiety-inducing kids’ games, and senior quotes. Radio plays and literary critiques ensue. You’ll have to listen to find out what happens. The gals answer some Blume Head questions, chat about the Hills, Teen Mom, and the Blume Saloon origin story. Alison presents two special reports on Victoria’s Secret and the historic Homeport restaurant, and Jody reads aloud yet another unsexy sex scene. The gals read FOUR (4) letters from some badass Blume Heads, discuss laundry safety tips, Jody does a Special Report on the Chappaquiddick Incident, and Alison tries a freaky mint that turns to liquid. There’s a primo letter from Jo about her Fiat NOT named after Grandad, an update from Rebecca Kate Mate, and a Blume Head of the Week: Mandy Sutton!
Thu, June 20, 2019
In chapters 14-16 of Judy Blume’s “Summer Sisters” (1998), our gals Caitlin and Vix are seventeen, just like the Dancing Queen! They’re all grown up, cruisin’ the island in their pickup truck, flirting with all the boys, and dabbling in some garden variety existential terror. Abby and Lamb have an epic fight and poor Sweetie crosses the Rainbow Bridge. But most notably, BRU KISSES VIX!!! Alison and Jody read all the juicy bits and chat about Roomba meat disasters, boy stink, otherworldly realms, and terriers named Jake. A big woohoo to Blume Head of the Week Brie Williams!
Thu, June 13, 2019
It's 1980, baby! Alison and Jody read chapters 12-13 of Judy Blume's riveting 1998 novel, "Summer Sisters." Caitlin and Vix are now 15 and their friendship is tested when they end up at the same high school. The Countess makes her grand entrance with casually discarded cigarettes and a strange bathtub scene. Our heroines end up babysitting for a celebrity couple but it does not end well. All we can say is: YOU STAY AWAY TIM CASTELLANO! Jody does Special Reports on the quintessential '70s perfume, Charlie, and days of the week as first names. Meanwhile, Alison tries not to black out inside the steamy Cocoon. There's also lots of dramatic reading, a Blume Head of the Week (congrats, Kate P!) and plenty of errors in need of correction.

How does a Pizza Wagon work? Does Judy have an animal nickname fetish? And what is “IT”? Jody recounts 1977’s notable events (did you know that Argentina sent a pregnant lady to Antarctica for first dibs on the South Pole?), while Alison talks about music, TV, movies, and the tragic Beverly Hills Supper Club fire. They also read two heartwarming/tear-jerking Blume Head letters and announce this week’s Blume Head of the Week, Lizza!

Marcy also gets her FIRST KISS... but it's not what she had imagined. Dad proves to be an even bigger dick than we thought, mom remains helpless, and grandma remains nameless. Marcy and the Four Horsemen of Finney plan a sit-in to save their favorite teacher from getting fired. Evil Principal Stone puts the kibosh on their radical plot and (spoiler!) Marcy ends up with a suspension. But Joel asks her to Nancy's party so everything's fine! The gals read some wonderful letters and notes from Blume Head listeners, reminisce about getting in trouble at school, Jody gives a Special Dream Analysis Report, and Alison rallies with a decadent Targ-Bucks beverage. Damn the man! Poor Marcy's entire world is crumbling. In chapters 7-9 of Paula Danziger's 1974 YA novel, "The Cat Ate My Gymsuit," Ms. Finney disappears and everyone's freaking out. The whole class gets detention for sassing Principal Stone, but this only brings Marcy and Joel closer together. Dad sucks, Mom can't function without tranquilizers, and Stuart never has enough orange pits. Jody and Alison talk about farts and the Pledge of Allegiance, peppered with some maudlin reenactments and vintage commercials. Congrats to TWO Blume Heads of the Week: Sojourner Sleuth and Anna Crossley. It's a Judy Blume book club. Join us every week!

New book y’all! Jody and Alison are thrilled to begin Paula Danziger’s debut novel, “The Cat Ate My Gymsuit,” chapters 1-3. They start with a 1974 primer and delve into some wild specifics: Rumble in the Jungle, Marina Abramovic’s uncomfortable performance art, the worst music in modern history, and Saturday morning cartoons. Our protagonist Marcy pretty much hates her life until the mysteriously hip Ms. Finney shows up at school. What’s up with this crazy teacher? Will Marcy work up the courage to chat with nerdy hunk Joel? What the heck is Smedley? In other news, the gals read two amazing Blume Head letters, reenact their favorite scenes, and sing some Blind Melon. Shout out to Amy Mason Doan, this week’s Blume Head of the Week!
Thu, February 14, 2019

There's correspondence with a real life Sheila Blume Head, who ALSO started her own handwritten newspaper. And of course, there is in-depth critical analysis of the movie, a sweet homage that Judy Blume made with her son, Larry. Join Jody, Alison, and special guests Lizzy and Cathy for pineapple upside-down cake and lots of chat about the '90s. Congrats to Sheila Jo Spencer, this week's Blume Head of the Week! The gals read one fascinating letter from a Blume Head who works with an adorable rodent named Mouse Ellis. Lizzy tells us all about her childhood show dogs with stripper names, while Alison presents a comprehensive Special Report on Tarrytown: the pre-WWI bombings, historic mansions, summer camps with towel service, and local SAT scores. And then Jody reveals a secret surprise involving our Most Famous Sheila, Sheila E.! Lastly, there's a super duper difficult 1972 trivia quiz, drafted by Blume Head Willie. There's also a very scary hayride with a possible werewolf sighting. Jody and Alison re-enact all the best scenes, and discuss sleeping bag couture and how awful pre-teen girls can be. Then Jody gives an impromptu Special Report on how to get ready for a date in 1972. Hint: you need to spare 5 hours. Join the gals for laughs, weird facts, and a little bit of Olsen Twins. After a terrifying dog-lick attack, Mouse gives Sheila another chance to own up to her faults, but our girl refuses to crack. Meanwhile, Jennifer makes a "friend" and that "friend" goes and knocks her up. What's Sheila gonna do with ALL THESE DOGS?! Sheila Tubman meets Mouse Ellis, the yo-yo Junior Champion of Tarrytown! Your hosts Alison and Jody read chapters 4-5 of Judy Blume's 1972 children's novel, "Otherwise Known as Sheila the Great." This summer ain't so bad after all – Sheila's making friends, avoiding dogs, and signing up for day camp. But things start to crack when she gets caught in a lie and is forced to take swimming lessons. Will our gal ever be able to gain Mouse's trust? Will she learn to swim without getting her face wet? On the flip side, Alison and Jody unbox some gorgeous Lip Smackers and an OREO RECORD PLAYER (!!!) from a very generous Blume Head. They also take a quiz on all things Sheila, tell stories about deceased chickens, listen to vintage TV commercials, and embark on some primo dramatic readings. Finally, gigantic congrats to Susan Susan Susan, this week's Blume Head of the Week!

New book alert! Jody and Alison get back on the Fudge Train with the second in the series, "Otherwise Known as Sheila the Great," written by Judy Blume in 1972. The girls are joined by longtime Blume Head Lizzy as they read chapters 1-3. To set the scene, Jody talks 1972 current events, movies, and hosts a trivia quiz where everyone's a winner! Alison presents her pop music findings, and Lizzy gives us the low-down on fashion of the era. They also dig up Judy's musings on Sheila, and an amazing book review by a real life 10-year-old. Sheila's family moves to Tarrytown for the summer, and it could not be worse. There's a howling dog, a scary spider, and NO YELLOW CARPET WITH A RED ROSE IN THE MIDDLE. Just lots and lots of Testor’s glue. Finally, congrats to Stephanie (otherwise known as Bookshelf Bombshell) for being this week's Blume Head of the Week!

They read some awesome listener letters about hot record store boys, '80s triangle perms, and Judy Blume eBay treasures. Alison shares her obsession with French chanteuse Alizée, and Jody discovers who wrote the iconic beat poem "Now-Times for People with Now-Dreams." The "Domestic Arrangements" finale! Alison and Jody read chapters 23-25 of Norma Klein's 1981 YA novel, in which Rusty gets a bootleg pixie cut, finally meets Pam from Andover, learns the truth about her parents' marriage, and appears on the Today Show. You absolutely don't want to miss Alison's far out beat poetry or Jody's Medieval chamber singing! And congratulations to Rosemary's Ladies, this week's Blume Head(s) of the Week! It's a Judy Blume book club. Join us every week!
Thu, November 08, 2018
In the penultimate "Domestic Arrangements" episode, Alison and Jody discuss chapters 21-22 of Norma Klein's 1981 racy YA novel. Rusty auditions for Lolita the musical by singing a weirdly maudlin Beatles song and playing some bra-less tennis with a middle-aged pervert. She finally gets to read her People feature, and learns a Very Important Life Lesson from the Man on the Plane. The gals muddle through two mysteries: 1) Who is Beryl the bootleg Barbie? and 2) Are Marathon bars really Snickers or Curly Wurlies? Help! Finally, congratulations to Blume Head of the Week, Martha, who wrote an awesome letter about her love of Judy and life as a teen during the early '80s. It's a Judy Blume book club. We're still languishing in La La Land with Rusty and her co-star Felix, through chapters 19-20 of the 1981 Norma Klein YA classic, "Domestic Arrangements." Rusty gets cornrows and spends a naked night with Felix over Nova Scotia salmon and Champagne, Joshua Poshua is MIA (potentially Andover-bound), Alison forms a Little Boy Parade, and Jody learns a new word. Listen along for the usual dramatic radio plays, mess-ups, and uncontrollable singing/swearing. The girls also have a first look at Gabrielle Moss' brand-new book about '80s and '90s teen fiction series, "Paperback Crush." Super duper congratulations to this week's Blume Head of the Week, Mary Ann! It's a Judy Blume book club. Join us every Thursday!

Mom leaves town and Daddy quickly replaces her with Abigail, Deel loses her virginity while a five-year-old child sleeps soundly on the floor, Rusty hops on a flight to LA, and Joshua Poshua proves to be Numero Uno Stalker of 1981. Jody and Al reveal their embarrassing internet screen names, and reminisce about trundle beds and Neneh Cherry. Alison and Jody have a SUPER exciting announcement to make, along with their regular "Domestic Arrangements" programming. The gals read chapters 15-16 of Norma Klein's 1981 novel about teen sex and stardom, and things just keep getting weirder. Daddy receives an obscene phone call and Rusty is interviewed by People magazine. Don't worry, she continues to say all the wrong things and her parents remain eternally incompetent. Jody and Al talk about early internet relationships, teacher-bullies, and the OG Degrassi. They receive a wonderful letter from former Blume Head of the Week, Jill, who writes about her complicated relationship with Judy Blume. And congrats to this week's Blume Head of the Week, Jennifer Kathleen! It's a Judy Blume book club. Join us every week!

Speaking of murder, Jody presents a Special Report on the Scarsdale Diet and the scandal involving Dr. Tarnower's jilted lover. Join the girls for some rosé, melodramatic readings, technology failures, and another glorious update from The Karen Files. Ginormous congrats to this week's Blume Head of the Week, J. Meredith! The gals present another treasure from The Karen Files and receive some fabulous tidbits about Barbizon and Scoliosis from Blume Head Helen. Come inside the Cocoon for idle banter about the creative liberties of James Franco, the shooting in Jody's backyard, '80s blush, and pre-teen nymphettes (ugh!). She will appear nude in said movie. WTF?! Alison and Jody are back in the Cocoon to talk about Norma Klein’s “Domestic Arrangements” chapter 3! This one’s a shortie, but we’ll get back to our regular programming next week. We learn that Joshua has some naked pics, and most importantly, that Rusty has starred in some kind of mysterious exploitation movie. WHAT?! Total cliffhanger. The gals talk about their first non-kisses, Jody discovers she’s a swinger, and Alison teaches us the correct pronunciation of “Stuyvesant.” If that's not enough, tune in for the vintage commercials from 1981 and the melodramatic radio plays.
