Send us a text Billionaires are rewriting the rules of democracy—should we be worried? Join us alongside my guest, Ohio State Representative Joe Miller, as we dissect the seismic shifts in political influence. We tackle complex questions about transparency, the rise of dark money, and the ethical dilemmas posed by wealthy billionaires steering political narratives. We explore Steve Bannon's "flooding the zone with shit" tactic, a strategy designed to divide and conquer public attention. We'll reflect on historical lessons, like the fall of the Roman Empire, to stress the vital role of strong institutions in preserving democracy, looking closer at what our Declaration of Independence had to say about authoritarianism. This episode offers new interactive avenues for dialogue and drawing inspiration from Matthew Desmond's "Poverty by America." Let's rally for balanced political solutions and resist the pull of manipulated outrage. sources: Michael Lewis Article, Has Anyone Seen The President? Send us a text Growing up in a working-poor family, State Representative Joe Miller (OH-53) brings a gritty, firsthand perspective to the table that challenges the status quo. Our discussion weaves through Joe's life experiences and combines them with insights from Matthew Desmond’s "Poverty by America" to expose the harsh realities of poverty and the systems that cement it. Together, we question the efficacy of political campaign spending and school voucher programs, and how they might unintentionally deepen the chasms of inequality they aim to bridge. The conversation pivots to the overpowering economic influence in politics, unpacking the staggering sums funneled into political advertising and the media's role in shaping public opinion. We reflect on how the middle class, once the backbone of democracy, has been increasingly sidelined by a wealth gap that grows ever wider. The notion that addressing this wealth gap is a provocative one, challenging the priorities of today’s billionaires as well as the affluent, and their potential impact on democracy. Our dialogue culminates in a critical examination of education funding and the role of billionaires in government. As an educator, Joe shares poignant stories of hungry students whose potential is stifled not by ability, but by basic unmet needs. We critique the school voucher system's unintended consequences of increasing segregation and undermining public education. Finally, we underscore the urgency of separating wealth from government to preserve the democratic ideals upon which our society is built. Engage with us on social media and YouTube as we explore these complex intersections of poverty, politics, and education. Send us a text Jerry’s expertise provides a rare window into the, sometimes, exclusive world of investment strategies, encouraging us to question who truly benefits from the current financial system and how we can make smarter choices on our financial journeys. Through the lens of corporate giants like Walmart, we dive into the moral and economic dilemmas surrounding minimum wage debates. Do higher wages lead to healthier, less stressed workers, or do they risk job losses and drive inflation? We unpack these arguments, focusing on how economic security can empower individuals while challenging corporations' role in perpetuating income inequality. This discussion sheds light on how capitalism shapes the lives of everyday workers and explores potential paths toward a fairer future. We also examine the intricate ties between poverty, capitalism, and corporate power in government and society. Drawing from historical and contemporary debates on welfare and minimum wage laws, we debunk persistent myths that blame poverty on individual failure. Inspired by Matthew Desmond’s Poverty, by America, we delve into how corporate interests influence societal values and political decisions. This conversation urges us to rethink our roles as consumers and citizens in a system that often prioritizes profits over people. Join us for an eye-opening discussion that challenges conventional narratives and explores solutions to systemic inequality. Support the show Survive Everyday on Bluesky Adam on TikTok

Send us a text Every day, millions wake up to a cycle they didn’t choose—a system built to keep them struggling, surviving, but never truly living. Poverty isn’t just an empty wallet or a lack of opportunity. It’s a network of barriers: broken systems, historical injustices, and policies that perpetuate inequality. Welcome to Survive Everyday Podcast and our new series, Spark of Change. Today, we begin our journey into the systems of poverty—how they’re built, who they impact, and why they persist. In this series, we’re not just talking about the problem. We’re talking with the people who live it, challenge it, and shape the policies that sustain or dismantle it. From everyday individuals navigating poverty to the politicians who have the power to shape anti-poverty laws, we’ll bring voices from every side of the story. Because to change a system, we first have to understand it. Let’s begin. Send us a text May is mental health awareness month and on this podcast we’ve never shied away from talking about mental health. On this episode we are going discussing 6 topics that delve into the intricate workings of the human mind and explore ways to foster our mental well-being. I’m embarked on a profound journey to unravel the significance of taking care of our mental health years ago, but like anything the work is never done, and it’s always ongoing. I hope to try and uncover the layers of this essential topic that impacts every aspect of our lives. In today's fast-paced world, where relentless demands and pressures consume our daily routines, the significance of mental health care cannot be overstated. Our mental well-being is the cornerstone of our overall health, affecting how we think, feel, and act. Just as we prioritize our physical well-being by exercising, eating well, and visiting the doctor, we must accord the same importance to nurturing our minds. So, let's explore why investing in our mental health is not just an option but an absolute necessity. *Contest Info: Subscribe to the podcast in whatever app you want and screenshot it, and share it on social media. Send us a text A little more than a week ago I asked a question on social media. If you’re a musical theater nerd like I am, there’s always a song early in the first act called, the “I want song”. This is the song the hero of the story sing to set up the journey you’re about to go on. In Hamilton it’s the song “My Shot”. In the Little Mermaid it’s a part of your world. In Rent, it’s the title song called Rent. In Wicked it’s the Wizard and I. I could go on and on and on. But in nearly every single musical there is a song. It’s belted out, loud and proud. Over spring break I really thought of what I really wanted and how would by song go? What would it say? What did I want? What has been my purpose? This honest appraisal of what you want is a tough introspective look. It’s incredibly uncomfortable. Here's how my "I want" song goes.... Send us a text From the beginning of this podcast I’ve wanted to focus on books that tell a compelling story about survival, and I find none so compelling as the search for what our response to the Pandemic really was. I’ve read so many things on the pandemic and the response, but this book stands out. As much as this is a book about the pandemic, it's also a study on relationships. How they can help you and how they can hurt you. It's not what you know, but who you know. Michael Lewis has always had a knack for storytelling and this book is no exception. He takes the banal subject of epidemiology and turns it into a thriller of the highest order. And, with the benefit of hindsight we can understand a little more about human nature, leadership, and interpersonal relationship. Send us a text This is the Survive Everyday Podcast Episode 32 with me, Adam Gercak. Money. It makes the world go around. We need it to navigate our society. We need it to exchange services for goods. It is the center of our lives. Survival Depends on a lot of things. Having enough food, water, shelter, and money is essential to survival. If you’re not independently wealthy, you need money to pay for shelter, you need money to pay for water, you need money to pay for goods. This is why it’s important to talk about with our spouses and loved ones, and more importantly, with our kids about money. It's just as important as the S.E.X. talk. This episode kicks off a 2 part episode with today’s guest, Tanisha Taylor. Tanisha is a 20+ year veteran of the financial services industry and she now helps coach young adults to create a beneficial relationship with their finances so that it can empower them to make more informed choices about the plans they have for their life. Send us a text According to the IRS, there are over 750,000 not for profit organizations in the United States. Organizations like the Red Cross, Susan G Komen Foundation, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and so many more. These missions fill mainstream roles in the national conversations, but there are 100s of thousands you might not even know about, doing great work in their community. Non-Profit Companies have a ton of headwinds, and you might even be mulling over the idea to start your own non-profit and might not even have the slightest clue where to start. Or, you might even have found a cause you love, but want more information about the non-profit and want to know how to research it to see if they really are spending that money on the mission, or is the non-profit being used as a cover for something else? Send us a text The holidays are stressful, there is no doubt about it. In America we have Thanksgiving quickly followed by Christmas and families get together and often talk about, eat, and critique food. Too much salt not enough salt, you get it. You have a mother who’s cooked a certain dish your whole life and now you try and make it and you’re terrified your mother is going to just eviscerate you on how you made it. It’s stressful. As a parent who’s always terrified of ruining my kids childhood and unaware of perhaps of me doing the same crap to my kids that I hated as a kid. Around the holidays we as parents fill a plate of food and make them eat all of it before getting pie, or cake, or whatever. Of course the kids won’t eat it all, and then tears are shed and the kid just want to have fun. So, with all this in mind I punched out an email to Kristen Lorenz. Send us a text Earlier this year I became an insurance agent, and not too much longer after that I was recruited to join a project called Project YESS. The project was to get kids out on Lake Erie and on the water and teach them water safety. Over the course of 3 weeks kids would get into the water learn how to swim, kayak, sail, and operate watercraft. The culminating exercise was a 1 week voyage on a tall ship sailing from Wisconsin to Cleveland, Ohio. 1 week without the comforts of home, to operate on a team, and to use that experience into their lives. Little did I know that this project was a part of a much larger organization and it’s just one of the many projects that the Rotary Club of Cleveland has been working on for over 10 years. During COVID this project fell apart due to the obvious. No in person meetings, people re-prioritizing free time, and just plain burnout. Just a month or 2 ago, I was officially welcomed as a member of the Rotary Club of Cleveland where I met today’s guest. In the Cleveland Rotary Club Ron is a celebrity. Send us a text " I’ve often said that we have only one truly sacred obligation as Americans—to prepare and properly equip our women and men in uniform when we send them into harm’s way, and to care for them and their families when they return. Yet for too many who are serving or have served, we are falling short. In an average day, 17 veterans die by suicide—not in a far-off place, but right here at home. Two service members on average die by suicide every day of the year. They’re our daughters. Our sons. Parents. Spouses. Siblings. Beloved friends and battle buddies. Each of these precious lives leaves behind loved ones who feel their absence every single day, like a black hole in the middle of their chests. In the wake of these terrible tragedies, we ask ourselves impossible questions. What signs did we miss? What more could we have done? The truth is, there’s no easy answer. There’s no simple solution. But there is hope. " - President Joe Biden “Vulnerability sounds like truth, but feels like courage. Send us a text In this episode we will be talking about suicide and other topics that might trigger some listeners. Anything you hear in this episode should not be considered medical advice. If you are currently in crisis and need help please stop this podcast and call The Suicide Prevention Line by dialing 988, if you are a veteran please select option 1. Our veterans are at a 57% higher risk than those who haven’t served. Since 2003 the US has experienced a total of 7,075 deaths in combat, that’s both forward deployed military and civilian sectors of the DOD. During that same time, 125,000 veterans have died by their own hand and that’s just counting the military veterans, not the civilians part of combat units. Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death for Veterans under the age of 45. The easily digestible statistic of 22 veterans a day are lost to suicide is all over social media, in the news, podcasts all over and with good reason. Movies like Free Solo, The Alpinist, 14 Peaks, The Dawn Wall, Valley Uprising, and 180 South are pure wanderlust fuel. They feed our sense of adventure. I can’t get enough of them. Today on the podcast we have one of the country’s foremost experts on Ice Climbing. Send us a text So what is multitasking? Let’s start there. Indeed labels multitasking as the ability to manage multiple responsibilities at once by focusing on one task while keeping track of others. Multitasking creates a greater demand on your cognitive resources, like attention and working memory. Indeed also gives an example of responding to an email while listening to a podcast. That’s awesome. If you are listening to this podcast and sending an email, good job. I want to talk about why this increase in brain activity can be bad for you. Send us a text Extreme Ownership is a book about a set of leadership principles learned, honed, and perfected in a time of war by a group of Navy SEALs. The leadership principles, while martial in their development, are easily transferred outside of the military setting to anything like business, friends, family, and just life. If you read only one book on leadership this year, this is the one to choose. Using parallel examples of how each concept or principle was applied in combat and in a business setting, the authors demonstrate and model their leadership principles for the reader. Johnny Depp sued for defamation and won that case, but the contents of the case were deeply disturbing and gave the world a glimpse inside a home with an abuser. In cases of domestic abuse, many people would ask, if Johnny Depp was abusing her, why didn’t she leave? Or vice a versa. If Amber was abusing him why didn’t he leave? The answer isn’t always that easy. Today’s guest, Vicky is sharing her story on her survival of domestic abuse and subsequent divorce after years of marriage and then a complete life reimagination. Send us a text Literacy is most commonly defined as the ability to read and write. But it’s not as simple as it sounds. Reading and writing abilities vary, across different cultures and contexts, and they’re constantly shifting. In today’s world “reading” emcompasses complex visual and digital media as well as printed material. The elderly population can read the morning paper, but probably have no trouble getting information out of Google. Different cultures have different perceptions of literacy. The writing traditions of the English language make reading comprehension an essential part of literacy, but this might not be as important in cultures or groups that rarely read printed material. As humans we need literacy to engage in ordinary daily life. Think of how often you use your own reading skills everyday. It’s not just articles, but signs, labels, and the messages on your phone. But literacy isn’t just reading and writing, but competence and knowledge in a specific area. Beyond the functional level of reading, literacy plays a vital role in socially engaged citizens. Being able to read and write means being able to keep up with current events, communicate effectively, and understand issues that are shaping our world. But then you also have Financial literacy, Digital Literacy, and Health Literacy that isn’t about reading words, it’s being able to read a situation and understand what is happening in that specific area. Literacy means telling a story is just as important as reading the story. In 2020 as a way to promote health literacy during a pandemic, today's guest created a new sport called Suburban Dog walking. This new sport was created in partnership with a non-profit which promotes literacy through comic books called Operation Comic Book. OCB’s sequential art storytelling process has helped explain participation in and the benefits of walking your dog. Housing the league on the Woof Trax app has brought the sport to life. Today we’re going to dive into literacy where it lands on the spectrum of surviving today. Send us a text " I have spent my entire life defying the odds. I survived a dysfunctional childhood, and I went down a bad path in my teens and early twenties. I didn't experiment with drugs and alcohol in those years; instead, I earned my Master's and Ph.D. in both subjects. I was knowingly on the road to self-destruction until I had an epiphany at the age of 21. If I continued down that path, I would prove all the naysayers were correct. I would be a loser who would never accomplish anything in my brief time on Earth. That was the impetus I needed to turn my life around. I went clean and sober, started exercising, and lost 100 pounds in about a year. All that work was rewarded a year later when I met the love of my life, who motivated me to succeed even more. I built a successful career in retail management, yet I remained unfulfilled professionally. So, in my thirties, I decided to start all over again, went back to school, and became a sports reporter in the city of Cleveland. Once again, I was faced with friends and colleagues who told me I would fail miserably, which only caused me to work harder and prove them wrong. that decision would be the best choice I made in my professional life. It also allowed me to teach at the Ohio Center For Broadcasting and an opportunity to inspire others. I will turn 66 in March, and I recently discovered I have a new challenge ahead of me. I underwent an angiogram on Tuesday, and it turns out that I have three significant blockages in my heart. I will have to undergo bypass surgery to alleviate the problem. They will contact me in the next few days to inform me when the surgery will commence. My surgeons have total confidence that I will come out of this procedure better than new. As for my feelings, I'm once again too damn stubborn to give up. It will be a challenging road ahead of me, but I am not ready to end this dance yet.
