Send us a text Episode 4 of series 13: Sex and Animals Transcript Being a researcher thoroughly acquainted with the Shackleford Banks horses during her PhD, she was uniquely positioned to investigate the behavioral changes noticed by the National Park Service when they introduced contraceptive management. This intervention aimed to control the horse population to protect the island's endangered plants and animals that were being impacted by overgrazing. Guest Bio: Dr. Cassandra Nunez is interested in the effects of wildlife management practices on target species’ behavior and physiology, and how these patterns can better inform management and advance basic knowledge of the linkages among animal behavior, physiology, and the surrounding ecology. As human populations continue to grow, the management of wildlife species is becoming increasingly necessary. As stewards of wild populations, we have a responsibility to manage them with the most effective and ethical means possible. My research suggests that if we are to achieve this goal, we must better understand the potential individual- and population-level side-effects of our management practices. I incorporate the natural history, behavioral ecology, and the physiology of species to better understand these issues, to more effectively conserve and manage animal populations, and to better understand the basic biology of organisms. Send us a text The sacred status of the cow is so widespread, so institutionalized, so deeply entrenched in Hindu culture, that it is actually quite a central question about the whole notion of Hinduism identity and cows. - Yamini Narayanan Episode 3 of Series 7: Animals and the Divine Transcript In this amazing episode we talk about the place of cows -or more pertinently, dairy - in the Hindu religion. It raises the question: what does it mean to treat an animal as sacred versus treating an animal humanely? Yamini discusses the consequences of the cow being amplified as the mother of human life, and how this actually more deeply entrenches the cow into the practice of dairy farming. We hear the story of Krishna and his love for milk as a child raised in a dairy farm, and think about how ideas of kinship with animals can be exploited. Importantly though, we also go back to the origin stories of Hinduism to ask whether there is a place in the Hindu religion to help animals. Guest: Yamini Narayanan is an Associate Professor of International and Community Development at Deakin University, Melbourne. Her work explores the ways in which (other) animals are instrumentalised in sectarian, casteist and fascist ideologies in India, and how animals are also actors and architects of informal urbanisms. Yamini’s research is supported by two Australian Research Council grants. Her newest book Mother Cow, Mother India (2023) is published by Stanford University Press. In 2019, Yamini was awarded the Vice Chancellor’s Award for Mid-Career Research Excellence. In recognition of her work, she was made Fellow of the Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics (FOCAE), a distinguished honour that is conferred through nomination or invitation only. The system is lower functioning than it's been in a long time. It's moving more slowly and it never really worked in the first place. - Kristen Hassen Episode 6 of Series 8 Transcript In this episode we dive headfirst into the complexities of animal shelters while also shedding light on the systemic issues that animal shelters battle. We'll delve into the delicate balance within the shelter system, as the staff strive to serve both the animals and the public. Guest: Over the previous decade, I’ve led three, large, government animal shelters in major U.S. cities. I’ve demonstrated that effectively leading animal services agencies requires a careful balance among five elements: public health and safety, lifesaving outcomes, community programs, humane care, and cost efficiency. I believe the most successful animal shelters engage their entire community in solutions, opening their doors, making it easy to help, and celebrating every single person who helps lost and homeless pets. Today, I provide consultation and support services to many of the nation’s largest and most high-profile animal shelters. I also lead projects and provide consultative services to numerous national organizations including Petco Foundation, Pedigree Foundation, Banfield Foundation, VCA Charities, and Best Friends Animal Society. Send us a text Episode 2 of Series 7: Animals and The Divine Transcript I'm talking to Anat Ben-Yonatan, a researcher at Tel Aviv University whose research is as fascinating as it is disturbing. But don't let that scare you away, We won't be going into any detailed descriptions of violence, but we are talking about animal slaughter for the purposes of kosher eating. However this research is less about what happens to the animals and more about the psychology and the place in Jewish society for the slaughterers themselves. Guest: Anat Ben-Yonatan is a social-sciences informed human-animal scholar and a Research Fellow at the "Coller-Menmon Program for Animal Rights and Welfare" in the Buchmann Faculty of Law, Tel Aviv University. She is the co-founder and a steering committee member of both the human-animal connections forum and of the community for human-animal studies (HASI) under the auspices of the Israeli Anthropological Association, which she also co-chairs since February 2022. Anat's Doctoral dissertation delved into the life and work of Jewish Israeli Shochtim (slaughterers), in which she looked, among other things, into their attitudes and feelings, as well as their moral schema in concern with shechitah (slaughter). Anat's main research interest include various forms of interspecies violence, with emphasis on legitimized versus non-legitimized violence of humans against nonhuman animals; and "the save movement" with its educational programs as possible paths to cope with these violent phenomena. Send us a text Ep 50- Special Encore Episode. Bringing back a listener (and personal) favorite episode for "the good old days" (2021). Pertinent to this time of year (not just for animal welfare workers), a lot of us are promising too much and feeling like we're delivering too little. We really need to think a little bit about self-care and instead we're thinking about everybody else in our lives that we could help, and good for us That's awesome. However sometimes it can feel like a lot. Things get overwhelming, and fatigue can set in. When we're in this state, we are not fun, we are not relaxed, And if you're like me you ultimately regret not doing better. So this episode is for everyone who just feels a little overwhelmed at the moment or maybe with life in general and could use a bit of a perspective change. Guest: Hilary Hager has spent the last twenty years managing volunteers in animal welfare environments and currently serves as the Vice President of Outreach, Engagement and Training at the Humane Society of the United States. Engaging volunteers in meaningful work to make the world a more humane place is Hilary’s passion and life’s work. She teaches compassion fatigue workshops around the country to help provide members of the animal protection community the support and resources to maintain their own well-being while working in a challenging and emotionally-charged environment. Send us a text Episode 1 of Series 6: The Animal Protagonist I'm talking to Dr Mariska Kret about how its possible to study the emotions of humans and other apes. The implications of this research is wide and the method more objective than you might think. Guest: Dr. Mariska Kret (PI) works as a full professor at the Cognitive Psychology Unit of Leiden University, where she directs the CoPAN lab . After MSc degrees in Cognitive Psychology (2006) and in Clinical Psychology (2007) from Leiden University, Kret started her PhD trajectory at Tilburg University where she investigated the perception of emotions (2011). Since then, her research expanded to comparative studies in great apes and patients with mental disorders. She has demonstrated that many of the facets constituting emotion processing are evolutionary ancient, and shared with great apes, our closest living relatives. In her ERC Starting project she investigates the role of emotional expressions in the establishment of trust. Her VIDI extends that research to clinical populations (autism and social anxiety disorder). In her research she typically combines different methods including fMRI, psychophysiology and behavioural observations. Reaching out to the general public and open science practices are of utmost importance to her. https://www.mariskakret.com/ Book Recommendation: The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals by Charles Darwin and How to Study Animal Minds by Kristin Andrews The Ape Who Went to College Host: Marika completed her MA in Anthrozoology at the University of Exeter , UK in 2016 and upon moving back to the Seattle area of Washington state she joined the board of Homeward Pet Adoption Center . Send us a text Let's talk about Umwelt. I'm calling this series the animal protagonist, because it is hard to remember that everyone sees the world in their own way. We all have a version of the world where we are the protagonist. We are living as the main character in our own story. Are non human animals any different? For a long time The possibility of Animal emotions was off limits in the scientific community. And although anyone living with an animal, even scientists, could see that animals had emotions, still the scientific community steered away from the subject. It was argued that because Animals couldn't talk there's no way we could ever know for sure if they experienced emotions. And if we could not know for sure then we should act as if they do not. This policy, has allowed at least Western society to treat animals as if they were not sentient, as if, despite our own perceptions, they did not feel pain or joy. Animals were relegated to no more than living machines which had no moral standing. All that is now beginning to change as many in the scientific community have realized that although we cannot yet prove animals have emotions It doesn't mean we shouldn't ask the question. After all isn't science about asking questions? However the progress has been slow and as you will hear from some of our guests some of the scientific communities still prefer to act as of animals do not experience emotions. So, we are only starting to scratch the surface of understanding other animals perceptions of the world. In this series I'd like to take a few episodes to introduce you to some of The researchers, philosophers, and professionals who are asking questions about animal perceptions, emotions, preferences, and history. we're going to talk to Dr Mariska kret, about the current research that goes into understanding expressions of emotions in other animals, we're going to be talking to world famous author Barbara King about how animals experience grief, we'll be talking to Sindhoor panghal a researcher and dog trainer in India about her work with free roaming street dogs, Dr Simon gabois will talk to us about olfaction perception in canids, and Dr Michelle fournette will be giving us insight into the lives of marine mammals through bio acoustics! We'll also be talking to dog trainer Simone Mueller about predation instincts in dogs and how they can be turned into powerful training tools! And as you can imagine there is so much more! So thank you for joining me as we ask the question what's the deal with animals! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/anthrozoo/message Show Credits Read t

We discuss this as well as what she is excited to learn at the conference. Guest: Amber graduated from the Royal Vet College, London in 1999 and went straight in to first opinion vet practice. Send us a text Episode 4 of Series 4: Wildlife Encounters Learn about the ancient connection between humans and raptors with Falconer, Silvia Mutterle. Guest: "Born in Italy but a citizen of the world, I’ve nurtured in time a deep connection with nature and birds of prey in particular. I consider other animals as my guides and mentors in a neo-shamanic perspective, and I believe in the human-hawk entanglement as a form of post-humanist co-education. As a founder of Falconeria Zen www.falconeriazen.org Silvia's work with the birds aims to establish a deep understanding and vibrant interconnection between humans, other animals and the environment in the heartfelt awareness that everything is interconnected. Falconeria Zen wants to offer a very respectful and sometimes spiritual approach to birds of prey as some of the most iconic and worshiped animals in human perception, because they represent the incarnation of all those height qualities that humans most admire. "I humbly observe, feel and establish a connection with them so that I can pass their message on to other fellow humans." Send us a text Episode 4 of Series 3: Equity and Social Justice in Animal Advocacy Ecofeminist Lori Gruen, shares insights with us about ecofeminist values and the connection between the oppression of women, people of global majority, animals, and the environment. Guest: Lori Gruen is the William Griffin Professor of Philosophy at Wesleyan University. She is also a professor of Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, Science in Society, and founder and coordinator of Wesleyan Animal Studies. She is the author and editor of 15 books, including Entangled Empathy (Lantern, 2015); Critical Terms for Animal Studies (Chicago, 2018) and Ethics and Animals: An Introduction (Cambridge, 2011, second edition 2022). Gruen’s work lies at the intersection of ethical and political theory and practice, she critically interrogates oppressive systems that impact those often overlooked in traditional ethical investigations, e.g. women, people of color, incarcerated people, non-human animals. Gruen has been involved in animal issues as a writer, teacher, and activist for over 25 years. Her relationships with scholars thinking about animals, activists working to protect animals, and, perhaps most importantly, with many different animals, uniquely inform her perspective on how we need to rethink our engagement with other animals. She has published extensively on topics in animal ethics and ecofeminism and has become known as a bit of an archivist for chimpanzees in the US given her work documenting the history of The First 100 chimpanzees in research in the US (http://first100chimps.wesleyan.edu) and the journey to sanctuary of the remaining chimpanzees in research labs, The Last 1000 (http://last1000chimps.com). So there are moments that we have a difficult time putting into words our thoughts or even recognizing the white privilege that we hold. After the interview Jasmin contacted me with some of the same concerns I had already felt. Neither of us being experts, Had we done Justice to the topic? Could we put this discussion out into the world? In the end we decided we should, because just as the book suggested, we were having the difficult conversation and trying to work out how we can make things better. And even if we don't get it right we are going to try and we're going to keep trying. So if nothing else, this is an excellent example of the kind of conversation that we all need to be having! Because we're not going to get it right the first time, and making the effort is important. Perhaps by sharing our effort we will encourage others to do the same. Send us a text Eradicating or Saving the Australian Brushtail Possum in New Zealand? That's the question posed by PhD Candidate, Emily Major. Emily’s research, examines the mainstream ‘possum-as-pest’ discourse in conservation and considers how compassionate conservation principles could help alleviate suffering and cruelty towards the brushtail possum. In tandem with her research, Emily began her blog, Framing Speciesism, which seeks to bridge the knowledge gap between academic scholarship and the general public. This blog, which discusses the framing of possums in short, digestible posts, can be found at framingspeciesism.com Framing Speciesism framingspeciesism.com --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/anthrozoo/message Show Credits Read the Blog! Send us a text Did you see the Motion Picture Born Free when you were a kid? I did! It was the beginning of my journey into animal advocacy field. Angela Grimes CEO of Born Free USA talks to us about the Vision and Mission of Born Free USA, The Born Free Primate Sanctuary and other projects important to having a "positive impact on animals in the wild and protect their ecosystems in perpetuity, for their own intrinsic value and for the critical roles they play within the natural world". In 2002, Born Free USA was launched in the United States to bring Born Free’s vision to the American public. In 2007, Born Free merged with Animal Protection Institute (API). Born Free operates one of the largest primate sanctuaries in the United States. The 175-acre sanctuary, located in south Texas, provides a safe, permanent home to approximately 400 monkeys, many rescued from abuse in roadside zoos or as “pets” in private homes or retired from animal experimentation.
