On September 19, 2008, Ronald Scott Gray, a seasoned 62-year-old retired Marine and Massachusetts State Police captain, vanished during an elk hunt in Idaho’s rugged Selway-Bitterroot wilderness. Despite extensive survival training, he disappeared without a trace. His backpack, found near Highline Lake, provided no definitive clues. Unusual behavior noted by companions hinted at possible disorientation or psychological factors. Harsh weather and challenging terrain complicated the intensive search. His mysterious disappearance remains unsolved, highlighting how even the most experienced outdoorsman can become lost in vast, unforgiving wilderness. Note: Mike is recovering from a serious illness and had some issues with his voice this episode. We apologize for the listening inconvenience and hope for his speedy recovery by next episode! In 1845, Sir John Franklin led 129 men on HMS Erebus and HMS Terror into the Arctic, vanishing without a trace and sparking one of history’s most haunting mysteries. This Halloween, we explore the eerie legacy of the Franklin Expedition: ghostly sightings around the shipwrecks, chilling whispers near graves on Beechey Island, and cursed artifacts that bring misfortune to those who dare disturb them. Was it lead poisoning, starvation, or something supernatural that doomed the crew? Join us as we dive into the deep end of the Arctic’s frozen secrets and uncover what happened to Sir John Franklins Northwest passage expedition. Correction 1 : During the episode we incorrectly stated actor Alfred Molina (Doctor Octopus in the Spider Man movie) played Sir John Franklin in the AMC show The Terror. The actor who played Franklin was actually Ciaran Hinds. Thank you to listener Lara Mangieri for pointing this out! You're correct, they do look similar. Correction 2 : Joe mixed up Vitamin C and D by stating you get Vitamin C by sunlight. Vitamin C is acquired by the food you eat and Vitamin D is made by your body when exposed to sunlight. Correction 3 : Mike mispoke a couple of times during the timeline segment and referred to the Back River as the Black River. On a quiet afternoon in January 1980, veteran park ranger Paul Fugate set out on a routine patrol in Arizona's Chiricahua National Monument, promising to return shortly. He was never seen again. Despite extensive searches, not a single trace of him was found. Was it a tragic accident in the rugged wilderness, or did something more sinister happen? Join us as we revisit the mysterious disappearance of Paul Fugate. (Episode 114) We first covered this case back on December 1, 2018. At that time, no other podcasts had covered Paul's case and very few shows were even focusing on wilderness disappearances. Since then, the wilderness disappearances sub-genre has exploded with amazing shows like Park Predators & National Park After Dark. With our 6 year anniversary coming up fast, we thought it would be fun to redo our first episode from the ground up, so we ditched the original show notes and came into the case fresh, with new perspectives on what might have happened. Hope you enjoy the episode and let us know how EP 114 compares with EP1! We can't thank you enough for sticking with us for 6 years and we're looking forward to many more years to come! February 26th, 2015; A young man from the Big Island of Hawaii was on Oahu visiting his grandmother. He planned to hike the Haiku Stairs, also known as the Stairway to Heaven. His grandmother warned him it was illegal to hike the stairs and he could be arrested. Not heeding her warnings, he set off on the hike that morning. When he didn't return home, he was reported missing, and the search began. Join us this week as we investigate the disappearance of Daylenn Pua. (Episode 95) Notes & Corrections: - Early in the episode, Joe states Moke was visiting his grandmother on the Big Island. Mike corrects Joe around timestamp 5:15, stating that Moke was from the Big Island and visiting his grandmother on Oahu. - There were a lot of discrepancies in our research on the age of Moke and the date he went missing. We discuss this during the episode, and based on evidence believe he started his hike on the 26th, not the 27th, which is listed in many news reports on this case. June 8th 2021- A Jackson Wyoming resident, bartender, and local snowboard instructor set out for a solo hike in Grand Teton National Park with limited gear on a moderate 8-mile trail. Witnesses reported seeing him around mid-afternoon. This is the last time he would be seen. Join us this week as we investigate the disappearance of Cian McLaughlin. Correction - Our comment about bears in the park was misleading when we said there are Grizzly's and brown bears in Grand Teton National Park. While Grizzly's are technically brown bears, not all brown bears are Grizzly's. Generally, brown bears are considered to be those of the species that have access to coastal food resources. Grizzly's live further inland and typically don't have access to marine-derived food. (UPDATE- We experienced some issues with Mike's audio feed on this episode resulting in his volume being lower than normal - we apologize to anyone having a hard time hearing the episode and will have the issue corrected on the next show.) In Episode 50, we learned about a suspicious death, a husband who remarried within months, who then fled the country. With very little coverage of the death, and even less information about the events leading up to her death, we submitted FOIA requests to fill in the gaps. Recently, one of our FOIA requests was completed and a 21-page police report on Gwen's death was sent to us. Join us this week as we continue to investigate the death of Gwen Hasselquist. A copy of the Police report will be posted on our website after this episode is published. A Note about this episode- For our regular listeners, this episode is a departure from the normal cases we cover. A lawyer with sources close to the subject of this episode contacted us about the death of a woman named Gwen Hasselquist. While her obituary lists the cause of death as Covid-19, his sources are convinced foul play is involved. The following episode is our fact finding, in person interview, with the lawyer who has taken a personal interest in investigating this case. Since recording this interview, we have filed several FOIA requests with local law enforcement, seeking out any additional information on what might have happened to Gwen. If or when we discover significant additional information about Gwen, we will release a follow up episode to discuss the findings. There are also some quotes containing profanity so parental discretion is advised. March 2020, Gig Harbor Washington, Gwen Hasselquist is diagnosed with COVID 19, and goes missing. Shortly after an obituary is posted in the local paper indicating that she passed away from the illness. However, there are conflicting statements about the actual cause of her death. Join us this week as we investigate the death of Gwen Hasselquest. New Patreon supporter shout-outs: Becca & Samantha Anderson Want to help the show out and get even more Locations Unknown content! The Stanislaus National Forest is located in Tuolumne County California, near the northwestern part of Yosemite National Park. The forest is home to hundreds of miles of streams, rivers, and over a thousand miles of trails. Yet, just beyond the forests beauty lies a dark and mysterious past. From 2005 to 2016, three individuals have gone missing, without a trace, at the exact same location; Donnell Vista Point. Join us this week as we investigate the Donnell Vista Point Disappearances. (Episode 45) Correction 1- During the location profile we correctly listed out the wildlife in this area of California. However, we misspoke further in the episode in regards to Grizzlies in California. One of the joys of doing the show live is you can't edit or re-record spots you mess up. One of us asked if there were Grizzlies in this area and the other host replied no but stated there are Grizzlies in other parts of California. This is incorrect. There are no Grizzlies in California and there haven't been for decades. Thank you to our listeners for pointing this out. Correction 2 - The first subject of the episode was correctly described as moving from over seas to Oklahoma and residing in Nevada at the time of her disappearance. We correctly mentioned that she originally drove from Nevada to Donnell Vista Point. However, further in the episode, one of the hosts misspoke and referenced Oklahoma multiple times when he should have said Nevada. We apologize for the error and again thank our listeners for pointing this out. Want to call into the show and leave us a message? Now you can! The only item recovered during the search was a disposable camera with an eerie partial selfie of Jared’s face at night. On June 15th, 2005, Michael Allen Ficery went missing while hiking alone near the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir in Yosemite National Park. Following his disappearance, a massive search and rescue operation failed to turn up anything other than his backpack, which was missing several items. Michael has never been heard from again. You can listen to our original episode on Michael here. ( https://locationsunknown.podbean.com/e/ep-4-michael-allen-ficery-yosemite-national-park/ ) In this episode, we sat down with his sisters Honor Boone & Robin Ficery, discussing a wide range of topics, including who Michael was as a person, details about the search and rescue operation, their theories on what happened, and the use of a medium that correctly predicted previously unknown facts about Michael. Join us this week as we dig deeper into the unsolved disappearance of Michael Allen Ficery. (Note - We did experience a couple of audio issues during the interview - we apologize for that in advance.) Towards the end of our interview, Honor Boone wanted to emphasize the importance of being prepared before heading out into the backcountry. After Michael went missing, she formed a company called Pack 6 (No longer operating) that helped equip hikers with pre-assembled survival kits. Honor stressed that there are 6 items every hiker should take with them; a Compass, Knife/Multi-tool, Headlamp, Fire starter, Signal Mirror, and Whistle. America, a melting pot filled with diverse cultures, beautiful natural wonders, and a historic sense of exploration. Among the vast beauty of our wilderness, there also lies a more sinister side. Throughout the ages, a haunting collection of nightmares and tales of the unexplainable have been passed down generation to generation. Stories of a prehistoric bull-horned creature terrorizing a small town, a hidden village of dwarves where trespassers are captured and forced to live among them, and a bridge haunted by a dead bride keep us up at night. Join us this week as we dive into some of the stranger urban legends from our home state of Wisconsin. As a bonus, towards the end of the episode we discuss two other haunting mysteries related to Wisconsin, the Slender Man & the Smiley Face murder theory. Sept 13th, 1990 - Biff and Cindi Bowen were at the halfway point of their 2,144 mile hike down the Appalachian Trail, when the couple stopped for supplies in Duncannon, Pennsylvania, before their trek up nearby Cove Mountain. The two planned to spend the night in a three-sided log shelter along the trail. As the couple hiked down an incline behind the shelter, Biff sensed that “Something was wrong,”. He was so overcome with an uneasy sense of dread that he positioned his hiking pole as a weapon before walking around the cabins open side. On the open side of the cabin, the couple found supplies frantically scattered around the murdered bodies of two hikers. The Bowens walked onto the scene of a grisly double murder. The victims, two experienced hikers—Molly LaRue, 25, of Shaker Heights, Ohio, and her boyfriend, Geoffrey Hood, 26, of Signal Mountain, Tennessee. Hood had been shot multiple times with a .22 caliber revolver. LaRue had been tied up, tortured, raped and stabbed eight times in the neck and upper back. On August 6th 2014, Arvin Nelson hiked into Big Sur State Park, along California's coast, never to be heard from again. In episode 5, we discussed the location and his disappearance in detail. In this interview, Mike discusses the case with two close friends of Arvin, Jay O'Rear & Jason Challas, both of whom have spent many years hiking with Arvin. Topics ranged from new details about the location where Arvin went missing to a more in depth look at Arvin the person. On February 24th, 1978 a group of five adults set out from Yuba City California heading north to Chico to watch a college basketball game. After the conclusion of the game, the five men were to return to Yuba City, where they had a basketball tournament the next day. What unfolded next in the following days and weeks is shocking and unexplainable. Instead of driving back to Chico, their car was found abandoned, deep in the Plumas National Forest on a high mountain dirt road, more than 50 miles in the wrong direction near the Rogers Cow Camp site. Searchers attempted to find the missing men, but hampered by severe weather, the search was called off after only a few days. Months later, a group of motorcyclists made a grizzly discovery, almost 20 miles deeper into the forest, near a Forest Service trailer used used by backpackers for shelter. Adding to the mystery, several locals claimed to have seen the missing men after their disappearance, with one man claiming to have experienced a very eerie, almost paranormal sighting near the location of the abandoned car. What caused the five men to drive into the Forest that night? Why did they abandon their car and hike deeper into the forest? Was someone or something chasing them?
