Bio: Matthew LaPine is from Duluth, Minnesota. He is the Director of Discipleship Equipping at Citylight Church in Omaha, NE. He has served as an adjunct professor at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (2018-22) and Reformed Theological Seminary (2022), teaching Old and New Testament, Theology, Hermeneutics, Ethics, Apologetics, and Theological Foundations of Counseling. He holds a PhD from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (Deerfield, IL) under Kevin Vanhoozer. His dissertation, published as The Logic of the Body with Lexham Press in 2020, was a finalist for Christianity Today’s book of the year in Theology and Ethics in 2021. He writes on theology and mental health and is working to bridge the gap between church and seminary by teaching theology within the local church. Matt is married to Molly. SYWTBIM | Ep. 34 | Mat Kountz | Overseas & Online Seminary Training in Latin America
In ep. 34 of the SYWTBIM podcast, we have the opportunity to talk to Mat Kountz. Mat and Amy have lived and served in Kitwe, Zambia and Cuenca, Ecuador with their children – William, Lina, Jude, and Oliver – training and mobilizing leaders for the church. While living in Ecuador they planted a seminary that focused on providing seminary training for students with low income and minimal previous training that also offered an entire training program for those many church leaders who do not read. During the pandemic, the in-person seminary was shut down by the Ecuadorian government and the training had to go online where it quickly expanded to serve students from many countries. At the end of 2023 the Kountz’s moved to the United States for a term to better serve the seminary that at that time had expanded to over a dozen countries. They now focus on running the seminary, expanding its reach through in person satellite schools and online training, and creating resources for Seminaries and Bible Institutes throughout the Spanish and Haitian Creole speaking world. Beyond Jim's biography details that I'll list out, this is the pastor that taught me how to be a pastor. I wanted to be a great pastor, but I was struggling to do it. God provided Jim at the proper time to teach me how to become the pastor I was hoping to become. It is a great honor for me to be able to share so much of his wisdom with you. Dr. Jim Grant has served as a Senior Pastor of churches in Texas and Illinois. He is an Air Force veteran, retiring with 25 years service. He travels during his military service allowed him the unique ability to have served a full gambit of churches' styles and health. He has a Master of Divinity Degree from Southwest Baptist Theological Seminary, and a Doctorate of Ministry from Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary with a concentration in Church Revitalization. He currently serves as the Director of Missions for the Galveston Baptist Association in Texas.
