Regardless of your profession, industry or area of expertise, to love what you do and work on your passion is a trait that manifests itself within your product. Having been by Lauren’s side throughout her courageous recovery from leukaemia, and being a stem cell donor too, Sarah created a set of skincare products that were gentle to Lauren’s sensitive skin. That expertly-formulated, award-winning range is now showing global promise, with the siblings going from strength to strength together. For most, this week’s guest on It Runs In The Family truly needs no introduction. Marco Pierre White - the first Brit and youngest chef to be awarded the full 3 stars from Michelin - has since exceeded the desire for their praise, focusing his efforts on tailoring top class food and atmosphere in his restaurants (and suggesting that Michelin stick to tyres). Having his eyes set on the trade himself, his son Luciano recently opened Luccio’s in Dorchester, having learned from the best - his father, and fellow 3-star restaurateur Pierre Koffmann. In this revealing discussion we hear the pride that Marco takes in seeing Luciano forge his own brand, the tough love that moulded his own exceptional standards, and how to teach lessons that can only be taught through struggle. The rise in popularity of culinary TV personalities has promoted some of the most successful chefs into ‘rockstars’ - we all know Nigella, Gordon, Jamie and Gino on a first name basis. What separates Rick Stein’s family brand apart, however, is the attention to detail in their hospitality. Founder and Co-Owner of The Seafood Restaurant in Padstow, Jill Stein, and Chef Director Jack Stein are a mother-son team whose skill set spans the interior decoration to invite people in, and first class cuisine that rewards those who visit. We hear from the duo on how they’ve upheld the reputation of a highly successful and well respected brand, the trust that forms the backbone of their ‘rock band’-like hospitality team, and holding family members to the same standards as the rest of the company. The story of Jimmy’s Iced Coffee is a 10 year journey of massive wins, starting on the South Coast and earning its place as a household name. A great degree of the success of this family owned business might be explained by an almost-telepathic understanding between the brother and sister pairing of Suzie and Jim Cregan (Yes, Jim as in Jimmy’s). From the inception of the idea from Jim’s experience in Australia, right through to the established brand we know today with high caliber ambassadors like Dame Judi Dench, the story is one of nurturing a culture with no hierarchy, and supporting each other through thick and thin. Few family businesses can say they have spanned 7 generations; such is the feat achieved by Hall and Woodhouse, brewers of award-winning Badger Beers and owners of over 250 pubs around the country. Taking the reins of H&W upon the sudden passing of his brother, Executive Chairman Anthony Woodhouse recalls his father’s advice on the business’ true purpose, and sets a high bar for his son Matt who serves as Commercial Manager. Family values pump through the veins of the business, treating employees like family and maintaining their big mission: to make people’s day, from the top to the front line. Find out the lessons that only 244 years can teach, and what’s next for Hall and Woodhouse, on the next episode of ‘It Runs In The Family’. This episode covers: Employing the best people in the business, not just providing jobs for family members Taking on a leadership role in light of a family passing Keeping healthy separation between father and son in the business Ensuring continuous innovation to stay relevant in the industry Giving your team the right environment in which to thrive Link and References: https://lizleanpr.co.uk/podcast-runs-in-the-family/ Connect with Liz: https://bit.ly/3lnFclp Connect with Leila: https://bit.ly/3bTwVSU Liz Willingham: https://www.instagram.com/lizzielean/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/liz-willingham-09273a3/ Leila Willingham: https://www.instagram.com/leilawillingham/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/leila-willingham-821530a1/

In this episode, we welcome twin sisters Joyce and Raissa De Haas, founders of Double Dutch Drinks Raised in the Netherlands, Joyce and Raissa, have a natural affinity with superlative drinks and excellent blendings. After all, they come from the birthplace of gin! But their love affair turned to frustration. While the world’s choice of spirits has continued to grow, mixers and sodas have remained bland and uninspiring. From that frustration, their business was born and grew from creating their own mixers while at university, heating sugar and carbonised water in a pan to create syrup and experimenting with different flavours. Soon, they were dubbed the ‘Tonic Twins’ among friends and family and while Double Dutch wasn’t officially launched until a few years later, the ‘Tonic Twins’ have since gone on to grow a business that has had investment from Heineken (themselves a legendary family business), win over 15 awards and be named in Forbes 30 under 30. We discuss how the twins’ childhood influenced their careers, how they manage and benefit from their ‘twin-thing connection’ in business and their hopes for the future of Double Dutch. This fun episode focuses on a youthful family business and offers a glimpse into one of the closest family relationships that exist. Hear how Joyce and Raissa use each other’s skills to their advantage and manage their incredibly close relationship within a professional setting. Bottoms up! In this episode, we speak to Warren Haskins, Chairman of Haskins Garden Centres. The business is over 100 years old and was established by Warren’s great grandfather, Harry. Haskins, which is now a multi-million-pound business that employs over 600 people, had humble beginnings. It started on a small stretch of land, which the Haskins family rented for £10 a year, selling produce in the UK’s south coast town of Bournemouth. Now the company has five destination garden centres after acquiring its fifth in Farnham, Surrey in 2020. We discuss how Warren has developed the business over the years, after taking it on unexpectedly as a result of his father’s sudden passing. We learn how that difficult moment shaped Warren’s life and how he went on to shape the business in a whole new direction too. Warren recalls memories from his childhood of playing on the nursery’s land, picking out bedding plants and shares useful business tips such as the importance of a strong team and how hiring the right staff is critical, even for family businesses. This episode is a heart-warming account of Warren’s journey and how his relationship with his business has evolved over the years, with a nod also to what the future might hold. Enjoy!
