Your eyes and ears are not deceiving you, there’s a new episode of Beyond the Pond! The battle against Phish myopia rages on. In Episode 114 we do a deep dive into the thirty minute, extremely wide-ranging version of Ghost from Nuremberg, Germany on July 3, 1997. In Episode 111 we discuss the near perfect take on Bathtub Gin from Limestone, ME on August 17, 1997. A melodic and emotive hose jam, it’s a brilliant example of pure playing, musical connection, and Trey-led jamming that, while it doesn’t break new ground for the band, neither has to. The Went Gin is here to serve as a peak moment of connectivity and communal joy over where Phish was, some 10 months into their reinvention period. In Episode 110 we discuss the wild and expansive take on Stash from November 14, 1995 in Orlando, Florida. A version which seamlessly moves into Manteca and Dog Faced Boy before closing with Stash , it’s a clear example of the musical heights the band had reached by November 1995, and the musical themes they were toying with as they transitioned towards their 1997–1998 peak that would come. As part of the Osiris Phish podcast ‘November Project’, along with Under The Scales and Helping Friendly Podcast , we are examining Phish’s output in November 1995 as it led to the December 1995 peak. In Episode 109 we discuss the hypnotic, groove-driven jam out of first Piper , and later, the debut of the joke soundcheck jam, Guy Forget . A true jam that one can never forget, this represents the last great jam of the 1.0 era, and a testament to how creative Phish was, even in their final few days as a band. As part of the Osiris Phish podcast ‘October Project’, along with Under The Scales and Helping Friendly Podcast , we are examining Phish’s epic Fall 2000 tour. We’d encourage you to check out their episodes which were released earlier this month to get full context for Phish’s Fall 2000 Conclusion to 1.0. In Episode 108 we discuss the atmospheric and oceanic take on Crosseyed & Painless from Matthew Knight Arena in Eugene, Oregon on October 17, 2014, the Fall Tour Opener. Coming late in a tepid tour opener, the Crosseyed & Painless leaves the song’s main theme for A Major and a hazy jam which both matches the locale & autumnal vibe of the west coast Fall Tour. It’s one of the most underrated jams of the entire 3.0 era, and a precursor to the nuanced jamming styles of the Fall 2014 Tour. Songs featured in this episode are: The War On Drugs: “Best Night” No Joy: “Nothing Will Hurt” Drew Grow & The Pastor’s Wives: “Bootstraps” Wipers: “Over The Edge” — — — In addition, we discuss two new 2020 records we highly recommend: Young Jesus: “Welcome To Conceptual Beach” and Zephaniah Ohara: “Listening To The Music” — — — We’re trying something new this October. In October, we’re going to be examining the end of Phish 1.0, with a particular focus on October 2000. In week two, HF Pod will do an exploration of the tour and talk about the end of Phish 1.0, while hearing from fans about the tour experience. And in week four, we’ll bring you a special segment. All of these episodes will be available on their normal feeds, so we encourage you to subscribe to all three shows. In Episode 106 we pay tribute to Phish’s 2010’s Tradition of closing each summer at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, CO, highlighting two incredible runs & jams, the Sand from September 2, 2012, and No Men In No Man’s Land from September 2, 2016. The former capped off the best run we’ve ever seen at Dick’s, jamming within the grooves of Sand for 12min before diving off the deep-end into a gummy-induced spacious exploration which predicted some of the best jams of the last 3 years. The latter built into a wall of sound just two songs into its run, jamming with aggression and purpose, all the while pulling Phish out of the malaise of Summer 2016 and into a resounding peak period for the next 16 months. In Episode 105 we’re joined by Mike’s Song Second Jam Ambassador, Andrew Hitz ( @drewphish ) and composer Don Hart ( @hartmus ) to discuss the wild, excessive, and maniacal take on David Bowie from June 24, 1995 at The Mann Music Theater in Philadelphia, PA. Using the jam as a leaping off point we highlight three composers who provide thematic insights into the music Phish was experimenting with in the Summer of 1995. In addition, we hear from Don Hart, who has worked with Trey to transcribe pieces like Time Turns Elastic and Guyute , alongside offering string arraignments on Sigma Oasis . Don provides insights into the world of orchestration while offering specific through-lines between the band’s abstract experiments in Summer ’95 with the late-19th/early-20th century composers that so influenced Trey. In Episode 103 we discuss the wide-ranging, forward-thinking, infectious take on Bathtub Gin from the University of Kentucky on November 7, 1996. One week removed from their performance of the Talking Heads Remain In Light , Phish was already applying the lessons of the album to one of their longest-serving jam vehicles. The hints of 1997’s reinvention are hard to avoid now as nearly every BIG jam over the next four weeks would further push the band towards their Linear Musical Communication rebirth. One quick note, we recorded this episode before the larger push to change the name of the Kentucky Wildcats’ arena from Rupp Arena. It’s clear in research that Adolph Rupp was a racist and that his name no longer deserves to grace the basketball arena. We support the faculty at the University of Kentucky pushing to change the name. In Episode 101 we’re joined by a fantastic DJ and massive music collector, Wade Wilby for a lively discussion on the drumming of Jon Fishman, the larger breakbeat history & culture, and how Phish has incorporated breakbeats into their sound. According to Wikipedia, “The most likely origin of the word “breakbeat” is the fact that the drum loops that were sampled occurred during a “break” in the music, as in the Amen break, which is a drum solo from “Amen, Brother” by The Winstons. However, it is a common thought that the name derives from the beat being “broken” and unpredictable compared to other percussive styles, something which is also reflected in the name of the related genre broken beat. Whether this was part of the original meaning of the word or is purely a folk etymology remains unclear, but it is safe to say that the term has evolved to encompass both sentiments.” Beginning with the most notable Phish breakbeat track, “Birds Of A Feather,” we examine the band’s usage of this technique before diving into the history of breakbeat culture & its impact on popular music. Wade is a fantastic host who guides us through a world we’ve loosely touched on on BTP, but never fully dived into. Songs featured in this episode are: Phish: “Brother” — 10/23/1996, “McGrupp & The Watchful Horsemasters” — 12/29/1995, “Buried Alive” — 07/29/1998, “Limb By Limb” — 07/31/1997, “Birds Of A Feather” (Studio), “Fuego” — 10/30/2016, “Chalk Dust Torture” — 08/31/2013, “Rock & Roll” — 08/05/2011, “Ghost” — 07/01/2012, “Crosseyed & Painless” — 06/23/2019, “Ghost” — 08/31/2019 A Tribe Called Quest: “We Got The Jazz” The Winstons: “Amen, Brother” London Elektricity: “Final View From The Rooftops” Tiger & Woods: “Come Down” Secret Machines: “First Wave Intact” The Comet Is Coming: “The Softness Of The Present” Aphex Twin: “Flim” Roni Size: “Brown Paper Bag” The Chemical Brothers: “In Dust We Trust” Roni Size & Reprazent: “Share The Fall” — — — We encourage all BTP Listeners to check out THE RAVINE on OSIRIS Media as well as The Vinyl Emergency . — — — We are proud to be sponsored by Harry’s ! With everything happening in America in the wake of the murder of George Floyd, we felt it necessary to step back and discuss our thoughts, as well as how we're communicating racism and the constant pursuit of equality in our country to our kids. We also felt it important to acknowledge that we haven't done enough as podcasters to highlight the music of black artists, especially those who are up and coming, and we commit to do better. We've also included information about a few organizations we've donated to that we'd encourage you to as well. Finally, we compiled a playlist of some of the black artists who paved the way for the music we love, as well as those making music today that are blowing our minds. We'll be back next week with our previously scheduled Episode 099: Top Albums of 2020 (So Far) . In the meantime, be well, be safe, and please keep pushing at the system for widespread reform. It is possible to finally realize the values of the American experiment in this generation. Songs featured in this episode: Archie Shepp: "Blues For Brother George Jackson" Moses Sumney: "Virile" Nerija: "Riverfest" John Coltrane: "My Favorite Things" Leon Thomas: "The Creator Has A Master Plan (Peace)" Sudan Archives: "Limitless" Cameron Graves: "El Diablo: Alice Coltrane: "Going Home" Organizations we recommend donating to: Color Of Change : Color Of Change is the nation’s largest online racial justice organization. In Episode 098 we chat about the languid and mysterious version of Ghost from May 22, 2000, at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, NY. To do so, we’re joined by Robert Ker (@bobbker /@phish2000at2020) to chat about the larger themes around the jam & run, plus dive deep into the worlds of krautrock & early-aughts NYC. An almost entirely Mike-led jam, it extends onward through minimal changes, for nearly 30min. Throughout much of it, Trey avoids taking leads, allowing all the lessons of the past four years to dictate the jams' development. It’s a hazy and woozy wonderland of groove-based, linear musical communication, and one of the best jams of an incredible year in jamming. To do so, we bring on one of our close friends & returning guest, PJ Rudolph ( @axillapt3 ) to chat about the band’s lasting legacy, our favorite records, the fantastic solo work of Stephen Malkmus, and their connections to Phish. In addition, we took in Ryley & Ryan’s wild & improvisational opening set on 11/29/2019 at the Bluebird Theater in Denver, CO, featuring Neil Hagerty. The guys were a great hang and played us some fantastic tunes and shed some light on some of our favorite music of the last few years. In Episode 082 we conclude our 20th Anniversary celebration of the Big Cypress Festival with a discussion of the massive pre-dawn jam off Roses Are Free in the early hours of January 1, 2000. A raw, minimalistic take on the rare cover, this equally sounds like an overtired band running on extended muscle memory from their closest attempt at the LG, and a proper welcoming to the first sunrise of the 21st Century. Songs featured in this episode are: Garcia Peoples: “One Step Behind,” The Microphones: “Here With Summer,” Gay Dad: “Dateline” In addition, we discuss two overlooked 2019 records we highly recommend: Leo Svirvsky: “River Without Banks” and Titus Andronicus: “An Obelisk” — — — We want to tell you about a new show from Osiris, After Midnight. In Episode 077 we continue our 20th Anniversary celebration of Phish’s Big Cypress Festival with a discussion of the "Crosseyed & Painless" from the massive overnight set the band played on December 31, 1999. A raging and torrential version of the previously rare cover, it’s shocking to us that the band was capable of playing something this high octane at 2am, but then had another five hours of music in them. A true testament to the band Phish was in 1999, and the dedication they approached the Millennium set with. Songs featured in this episode are: Neil Young: “Time Fades Away,” Bob Dylan: “A Hard Rain’s Gonna Fall,” Bonnie “Prince” Billy: “Madeline-Mary,” Shack: “Natalie’s Party” In addition, we discuss two new 2019 records we highly recommend: (Sandy) Alex G: “House of Sugar” and Lower Dens: “The Competition” — — — Check us out on Spotify: Beyond The Pond Podcast Songs You can find us on Twitter: @_beyondthepond Medium: https://medium.com/beyond-the-pond Please check out the Osiris Podcast Network at: OsirisPod.com and JamBase.com Please leave us a review on iTunes! In Episode 076 we turn our focus northwards, highlighting an electric version of "Tweezer" from Vancouver, BC on September 9, 1999. A twenty-minute monster that begins in near silence before exploding into a wild Trey-led peak that feels never-ending until it fades into a two-minute ambient bliss jam. Emblematic of the shoegaze jams that dotted the year, this is an excellent example of the style the band employed at the end of the century. In Episode 073 we focus on the oft-overlooked, somewhat maligned, Summer 1996 European Tour, and highlight the bizarre "Taste -> Llama" that closed out the Tour-Opening set, and featured Carlos Santana & Karl Perazzo. In Episode 067 we dive into our first of three episodes in 2019 focusing on the magic of Big Cypress. Up first is the lilting and gorgeous take on "Split Open & Melt -> Catapult" that caught everyone by surprise late into the Millennium Eve's first set. A sublime take on a song that's rarely known for its beauty - save for 07/06/2013 - this fit the setting and the blissful spin into Y2K the band employed during the final few days of the previous Millennium. Of note, our very own Brian Brinkman wrote about December 1999 in a two-part series for Phish.Net this past December. Have a read here & here . Songs featured in this episode are: Beck: "Mixed Bizness," Super Furry Animals: "Northern Lites," Blur: "Tender," and The Olivia Tremor Control: "California Demise 3" In addition, we discuss two new 2019 records we highly recommend: Craig Finn: "I Need A New War," and These New Puritans: "Inside The Rose" - - - We're thrilled to be sponsored by Passion House Coffee Roasters ! In Episode 066 we turn the clock back to Summer 1997 for an exploration of the RAGEFUNK Phish was experimenting with at the peak of their transition towards Fall 1997's fully-realized creative rebirth. With a focus on the massive, 25+ minute "Ghost" the band played on July 23, 1997, we focus on the new style the band was employing within their improvisation, and the impact this had during the first ten days of their Summer 1997 US Tour. In addition, we explore the idea of our favorite bands dropping a song that is such a stark diversion while also opening a new rabbit hole with which to obsess over. Songs featured in this episode are: The Funkees: "Akpankoro," Shuggie Otis: "Ice Cold Daydream," Wilco: "I Am Trying To Break Your Heart," and Sleater-Kinney: "Entertain" In addition, we discuss two new 2019 records we highly recommend: Rose City Band: "Rose City Band," and Ex Hex: "It's Real" -- We're thrilled to be sponsored by Passion House Coffee Roasters ! In Episode 065 we deep-dive one of our favorite bands of all time: Radiohead. To do so, we've brought on one of our favorite podcasters, and our good friend, Myke "Lawn Memo" Menio ( @lawnmemo ) to help us break down their career. Myke is a longtime Phish fan who's as active as anyone in the Phish-analysis corner of the fanbase. From The Daily Ghost to his recaps of the previous Summer Tour leading up to the next Tour Opener, to his fantastic podcast, The Daily Soundcheck , he's one of the true forces for good in our little universe. In addition, Myke is also a huge Radiohead fan. We had a great time chatting with him about the band, and walking through their discography together. Even if you're a total noob to Radiohead, or a longtime fan as well, there's lots in here to convince all of their greatness. Songs featured in this episode are: (Intros) "There, There," "The National Anthem," "Morning Bell/Amnesiac" // "Blow Out" - Pablo Honey (1993), "Planet Telex" - The Bends (1995), "Paranoid Android" - OK Computer (1997), "Everything In Its Right Place" - Kid A (2000), "Pyramid Song" - Amnesiac (2001), "2+2=5" - Hail To The Thief (2003), "15 Steps" - In Rainbows (2007), "Separator" - The King Of Limbs (2011), "Decks Dark" - A Moon Shaped Pool (2016) - - - Check us out on Spotify: Beyond The Pond Podcast Songs You can find us on Twitter: @_beyondthepond Medium: https://medium.com/beyond-the-pond Please check out the Osiris Podcast Network at: OsirisPod.com and JamBase.com Please leave us a review on iTunes! In Episode 064 we discuss the dim and expansive version of "Reba" from Augusta, Maine on October 19, 2010. One of the most fascinating & boundary-pushing jams of Fall 2010, this reflected a band that found their weird side again through a two-week tour of Northeastern industrial cities & Minor League Hockey Arenas. One of only four times "Reba" has ever encored, this capped off a really fascinating show that saw the band toying with their setlist and jamming with purpose, a clear turning point in early-3.0. Songs featured in this episode are: Neil Young & Crazy Horse: "Change Your Mind," The Strokes: "Happy Ending," Dizzy Gillespie: "Salt Peanuts," "Cool Breeze" In addition, we discuss two new 2019 records we highly recommend: Fennesz: "Agora," and The Chemical Brothers: "No Geography" - - - Check us out on Spotify: Beyond The Pond Podcast Songs You can find us on Twitter: @_beyondthepond Medium: https://medium.com/beyond-the-pond Please check out the Osiris Podcast Network at: OsirisPod.com and JamBase.com Please leave us a review on iTunes! In Episode 059 we step back to 1988 to discuss a fascinating version of "The Curtain With." Featuring a disjointed swirling guitar jam, a legitimate "Dave's Energy Guide," and a preview of the ways in which Phish would break from their song structures to craft wholly original music in a live setting within five years time. The second-to-last "Curtain With" before its 1178 show hibernation, also the second-to-last Phish show before the band would travel to Colorado for their first residency outside of the Northeast, we hear the band growing in a show that served as a model for the massive festivals they'd be hosting within a decade. In Episode 049 we visit June 1994 - somehow our first 1994 jam - to discuss the underrated, forward-thinking Run Like An Antelope from June 24, 1994 at The Murat Theatre in Indianapolis, IN. A classic 1994 jam, this is equal parts experimental, indulgent, confident and arrogant. Here, the band displays their prescient playing, foreshadowing the creation of the song First Tube some five years before its debut. In addition, there is a full-on Down With Disease jam that fits the era perfectly. Songs featured in this episode are: Pavement: "Rattled By The Rush," Foals: "Inhaler," Vampire Weekend: "Diane Young," and Art Blakey: "Free For All" In addition, we discuss two new 2018 records we highly recommend: Low: "Double Negative," and One Eleven Heavy: "Everything's Better" -- We're proud to partner with Ben & Jerry's to help raise awareness of The WaterWheel Foundation. In Episode 048 we are joined by friend of the pod, Ben Greenfield ( @GuyForgetOPT ) to discuss Phish's 2018 Halloween Album - Kasvot Vaxt: "i rokk " - and then we break down the rest of the band's phenomenal Las Vegas Run. In a stunning move, the band debuted a new album of brand new material - for the third times in five years - here donning the moniker, Kasvot Vaxt, a fictional Scandinavian band that had supposedly crafted a single album in 1981 before disbanding. One of the best pranks the band has pulled on their fanbase - in a career filled with them - what made this especially great was the fact that the music produced during the Halloween set was so classic Phish and forward thinking all at the same time. Songs featured in this episode are: Prince: "I Would Die 4 U," Camille: "Housequake," XTC: "Summer's Cauldron," Dukes Of Stratosphere: "Vanishing Girl," Ratto je Lehtisalo: "Valonnopeus," and Baby Grandmothers: "Somebody Keeps Calling My Name" We're proud to partner with Ben & Jerry's to help raise awareness of The WaterWheel Foundation. In Episode 047 we focus on the second week of Phish's Fall 2018 Tour, highlighting two excellent jams - 10/24 Mike's & 10/26 Mercury - within the band's two night run in Nashville & three-night run at the former Rosemont Horizon, now Allstate Arena, just outside of Chicago. Two exciting jams from across their catalogue, these both encapsulate the continued high the entire community is currently on as we move to Las Vegas for their four-night Halloween Run. And so now, we've arrived in Las Vegas, awaiting the band's 10th Halloween Cover Album show. Whatever they choose to play we know will impact our view of this tour forever. Two vastly different jams, they both showcase the consistent highs of the tour, while proving that the band is clearly well practiced and focused heading into their tenth Halloween Cover Run. In Episode 045 we're joined by our good friend and musicologist, Jake Cohen ( @smoothatonalsnd ) to discuss one of the best Phish jams of all time: the 09/14/1999 "AC/DC Bag" from Boise, ID. A multifaceted excursion that seamlessly melded together 99-era bliss jamming with big techno beats, ambient soundscapes and 1.0 peaks, this jam has a bit of everything and showcases the impact of snooze-you-lose Phish at the peak of their game. Songs featured in this episode are: Mahler: "First Symphony - Third Movement," The Cure: "Last Dance," Escort: "All Through The Night," and Change: "The Glow of Love." In addition, we discuss two new 2018 records & one 2017 record we highly recommend: JEFF The Brotherhood: "Magick Songs," Nothing: "Dance On The Blacktop," and This Is The Kit: "Moonshine Freeze." In Episode 044 we're joined by one of our favorite music writers, Grayson Haver Currin ( @currincy ) for a wide-ranging conversation about music, travel, current festival trends, and how some of our formative songwriters can regain their past glory. While Grayson's work appears in a number of publications we admire: Pitchfork , NPR and Outside Magazine , among others, it was three of his essays he wrote over the last twelve months that convinced us we had to chat with him. The first, What I Learned Road-Tripping Across North America With One Of Those Giant CD Binders . Early this year, Grayson released a timely piece about the changing dynamics of music festivals called: How Musicians Are Fixing The Summer Music Scene With Their Own Festivals . And finally, in the early summer, he released an essay about one of his favorite bands, Dave Matthews Band, wondering what it would take for the band to make truly meaningful music again, titled: Dave Matthews Band And The Sound Of Settling . Songs featured in this episode are: Sleep: "Mariuanat's Theme," Dave Matthew's Band: "The Dreaming Tree" & "Bartender," Neil Young: "C'mon Baby Let's Go Downtown," Sonic Youth: "Total Trash," Tony Conrad: "Trance 2," Bon Iver: "Minnesota, WI," Mary Lattimore: "Baltic Birch," Damien Jurado: "Percy Faith," Zeal & Ardor: "Fire Of Motion," Tangents: "Terracotta," Bruce Springsteen: "Nebraska," The National: "Karen," Counting Crows: "Omaha." In this Bonus Episode, we feature an interview Brian did with Joel Cummins of Umphrey's McGee just prior to the band's July 7 show at Red Rocks Amphitheater. In addition to the interview, Joel requested we showcase the band's excellent jam off "Divisions" from July 5, the band's first performance of the song in 66 shows. Umphrey's McGee is a band that took both Dave & Brian some time to really "get." But once we did, they proved to be yet another obsession - much like Phish - with a wealth of music, history, and easter eggs one can get lost in for years before ever finding the bottom. In this interview, Brian & Joel discuss the band's dedication to fan service, what a great show feels like, why some songs weave in and out of the rotation, his own musical roots, and what he's listening to right now. All this prior to the band's third night at Red Rocks where they'd feature killer performances of "Dump City", "Women Wine & Song", "Ocean Billy", "Wappy Sprayberry" and "All In Time". In Episode 041 we discuss not one, but two jams from the second week of Phish's Summer 2018 Tour. Focusing on the "Set Your Soul Free" from July 25th in San Francisco and the "Soul Planet" from July 28th in Los Angeles, we explore the inspiration the band has received through two of their newest songs, and the impact this is having on the band from an improvisational standpoint in the tour thus far. Two very unique jams, the "SYSF" touches on 2.0 peak-less groove jamming, while the "SP" is a close cousin of the Reading DWD we covered in Episode 008. Songs featured in this episode are: Animal Collective: "Fireworks," The Beta Band: "Assessment," Beck: "Soul Of A Man," and Jimi Hendrix & Band of Gypsies: "Power of Soul" In addition, we discuss two new 2018 records we highly recommend: American Aquarium: "Things Change," and Howlin' Rain: "The Alligator Bride" Please Check out the OSIRIS YouTube Page for #CouchReport Check us out on Spotify: Beyond The Pond Podcast Songs You can find us on Twitter: @_beyondthepond Medium: https://medium.com/beyond-the-pond Play the Lure Social Fantasy Setlist Game: http://luresocial.com/ Please check out the Osiris Podcast Network at: OsirisPod.com // Go to Relix.com to learn more about Osiris, our sister podcasts, & upcoming events! In Episode 039 we discuss the shimmering and blissful version Gumbo from July 22, 2003 at Deer Creek Amphitheater in Noblesville, IN. A 15+minute mid-first-set jam, this version diverges from the psychedelic-blues jamming they employed throughout much of 2003. An exceptional example of Trey's lead guitar, this version is sure to have you floating 2–3 feet above the ground. Songs featured in this episode are: The War On Drugs: "Red Eyes," The Stone Roses: "This Is The One," The Hold Steady: "Chicago Seemed Tired Last Night," Hot Chip: "How Do You Do?" In Episode 038 we discuss the effect-heavy, funk-laden version of 2001 from Memphis, TN on September 29, 1999. The jamming peak of an absolutely packed show, we humbly argue that this, very well, may be the best version of 2001 the band has ever played. Songs featured in this episode are: Funkadelic: "A Joyful Process," Milt Jackson: "People Make The World Go Round," Albert King: "Crosscut Saw," Memphis Minnie: "When The Levee Breaks." In addition, we discuss two new 2018 records we highly recommend: Tangents: "New Bodies," and Wooden Shjips: "V." Today's episode is brought to you by Lure Social . In Episode 037 we discuss the expansive, relentless, sometimes terrifying, others delicately beautiful, Runaway Jim from June 16, 1995 at Walnut Creek Amphitheater in Raleigh, North Carolina. An archetypical Summer 1995 jam, this sees Phish mess with noise and sonic walls of sound in effort to find a musical connection far beyond the reaches of melody and accessible music. Songs featured in this episode are: Mark McGuire: "Brain Storm (For Erin)," Spiritualized: "I Think I'm In Love," The Caretaker: "Moments of Sufficient Lucidity," Low Cut Connie: "Beverly." In addition, we discuss two new 2018 records we highly recommend: Deeper: "Deeper," and Rolling Blackouts Costal Fever: "Hope Down." Today's episode is brought to you by Lure Social . In this Bonus Episode, we felt compelled to talk about the life, legacy, and personal impact of Anthony Bourdain, who died on June 8 at the age of 61. We also compiled a playlist that runs the last half of the episode featuring songs we know he'd love. Bourdain's suicide is a shock to many. As world travelers, foodies, and as two young fathers committed to understanding the world, being proven wrong, and listening to the stories of the people that make up our vast & diverse world, we feel the shock on a very personal level. We wanted to share his impact on our lives, stories about our own "Bourdain experiences" as well as share some tunes we know he was passionate about. While we would never see eye-to-eye with the man over Phish, we 're big fans of the music he pushed - Class of '77 CBGB, QOTSA, straight-up guitar/bass/drums rock - and felt this was the best way to honor him and his legacy. Songs featured in this episode are: The Stoogies: "Down On The Street," Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreakers: "Chinese Rocks," Mark Lanegan: "Hit The City," Dead Boys: "Sonic Reducer," Television: "See No Evil," Ramones: "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend," Queens of The Stone Age: "In My Head," Roxy Music: "Do The Strand," New York Dolls: "Personality Crisis," The Brian Jonestown Massacre: "Anenome." In Episode 035, we discuss the bass-driven version of Down With Disease from September 12, 2000 at Great Woods Amphitheater in Mansfield, MA. A true Mike-led jam, this version of DWD represents one of the archetypical jams of the band's Fall 2000 Tour, their last of the 1.0 era. Songs featured in this episode are: Darkside: "Paper Trails," Primal Scream: "Burning Wheel," The Walkmen: "The Love You Love," and Mclusky: "To Hell With Good Intentions." In Episode 034, we continue our deep-dive into the history of one of our favorite bands, U2. Once again, we brought on one of our close friends, and U2-expert, Ryan Nichols ( @ryannichols7 ) to help us out. Approaching the band's history chronologically, we explore how U2 grew into the biggest band in the world, shifted in one of the most extreme manners for a mainstream Rock band, and has spent much of the last 20 years trying to figure out what's next. We also consider possible ways for U2 to reclaim the status of "The World's Most Important Band." Songs featured in this episode are: "Mofo" - Pop (1997), "Kite " - All That You Can't Leave Behind (2000), "Love & Peace Or Else" - How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb (2004), "Fez/Being Born" - No Line On The Horizon (2009), "This Is Where You Can Reach Me Now" - Songs Of Innocence (2014), "Red Flag Day" - Songs Of Experience (2017). In order to fully celebrate this performance, we’ve built an episode off the line, “The world moves on a women’s hips” and focused entirely on Female artists we’re all enthralled by. In Episode 030, we discuss the dreamy and atmospheric version of Birds of a Feather from July 8, 1999 in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Only the second ever Type-II version of Birds, the jam leaves the song’s theme after ten-minutes of hose for an ambient section of 99-era bliss jamming. It’s then that Trey plucks the from If I Only Had A Brain out of thin air & inserts it into the jam, riding it to its conclusion in one of the dreamiest jams of the year. Songs featured in this episode are: Juliana Barwick: "Bob In Your Gait," Julia Holter: "Silhouette," Yo La Tengo: "You Are Here," "Shortwave," and "Above The Sound." In addition, we discuss two new 2018 records we highly recommend: Park Jiha: "Communion" and Erika Wennerstrom: "Sweet Unknown." A brooding, dimly lit jam, this is one of the most unique versions of Piper the band has ever played, as well as an excellent example of the highly creative approach they took to the Island Tour. Songs featured in this episode are: Yeah Yeah Yeahs: "Way Out," Kanye West: "On Sight," Bruce Springsteen: "Downbound Train," Smashing Pumpkins: "Through The Eyes Of Ruby," Tim Hecker: " In The Fog I," Massive Attack: "Man Next Door." To do so, we’re joined by our good friend, Ben Greenfield (Twitter: @GuyForgetOPT), an all-around-brilliant Phish fan, and one of the founding writers for the Online Phish Tour. We approached this episode in really the only way one could: a sprawling, all-inclusive deep-dive, offering historical context into the Winter 2003 Tour that led to it, its impact on 2.0, and its overall place in larger Phish History.
