Why do we feel exhausted even when life looks “fine” on the outside? In this episode of Scenic Route , we explore the quiet, invisible weight so many of us carry—and how our bodies often hold onto stress, tension, and emotional labor in ways we don’t even notice. Zurich-based body therapist Michelle Sabbatini joins Jennifer Walter to discuss the difference between having a body and being one and how tuning into our physical sensations can be the first step toward healing and resilience. What we unpack together: The disconnect between how we feel and what we think we should feel Why perfectionism, caregiving, and mental load leave us chronically depleted The tension we don’t notice until it’s unbearable Why it’s so hard to say “I need help”—and how to start Two grounding breathwork practices to help you come back to yourself This episode is for anyone who's been feeling drained, disconnected, or “not quite right”— and wants to start coming home to their body in a grounded, compassionate way. Why are women punished for being honest about motherhood? When Chappell Roan said her friends with kids are “in hell,” the backlash wasn’t about the words but about breaking the performance. In this episode of Scenic Route , sociologist and coach Jennifer Walter unpacks the emotional labour, mental load, and societal expectations that define modern motherhood. Why do we praise men like Seth Rogen for opting out of parenthood while vilifying women who name the cost of caregiving? Why do tradwife aesthetics trend while actual support for mothers disappears? This episode explores: The mental load and invisible labour that mothers carry Why motherhood is a performance, not just an experience The backlash against Chappell Roan and what it reveals Adrienne Rich on motherhood as institution vs. experience Erving Goffman’s theory of social roles and the "good mother" mask The rise of the trad wife movement and its political implications Why unpaid care work is central to the global economy—and still invisible The cost of honesty in a culture built on maternal silence 🎧 With insights on: Call Her Daddy and Chappell Roan's viral statement The cultural double standard around parenting and gender How systems maintain control through emotional suppression Join us on the Scenic Route. We are living in the Disinformation Age — a time unlike any other in history. Never before have we been bombarded with so much information, yet so little clarity. Our feeds are flooded with misleading headlines, personal opinions disguised as facts, and viral narratives designed to manipulate us. Even the sharpest minds can fall for misinformation—so how do we learn to see through the noise? In this episode of The Scenic Route , I sit down with Dr. Brie Kara , a psychologist specializing in disinformation and media literacy, to break down: The real difference between misinformation and disinformation (and why it matters) Why our brains are wired to fall for cognitive biases and mental shortcuts How disinformation campaigns hijack our instincts—and how to fight back Practical strategies to sharpen critical thinking and media literacy skills Why fact-checking isn’t enough—and what to do instead We’re constantly being pulled in different directions by algorithms, outrage-driven media, and our own subconscious biases. For decades, empathy has been celebrated as the glue of human connection— but what if it’s actually burning you out ? In this thought-provoking episode of The Scenic Route , we unpack why empathy alone isn’t enough and why it’s time to shift toward something more sustainable: compassion . 💡 What You’ll Learn in This Episode: ✔️ Why empathy is exhausting—and how it leads to burnout, anxiety, and emotional paralysis ✔️ The three ways empathy has been weaponized in modern life ✔️ How selective empathy keeps us trapped in caring for some while ignoring others ✔️ Why compassion—not empathy—is the antidote to overwhelm and emotional fatigue ✔️ Actionable steps to set boundaries, stop absorbing everyone’s pain, and channel care into action 🎙 My Personal Story I share my journey of unlearning toxic empathy , from growing up in a household where empathy was a one-way street to realizing how this pattern mirrors larger societal systems of emotional extraction . What we eat isn’t just personal — it’s political. In this thought-provoking episode, Matthew C. Halteman , philosopher and author of Hungry, Beautiful Animals , joins Jennifer to reframe the ethics of veganism through the lens of joy, flourishing, and resistance . Instead of guilt or perfectionism, Matt advocates for ethical and vegan eating as an act of joyful defiance — a way to challenge systems of oppression while embracing personal and collective well-being. Together, they explore: How vegan ethics intersects with moral philosophy and political activism Why joyful resistance is more effective than guilt in driving change The role of food justice, sustainability, and compassionate living in ethical eating How to shift from a scarcity mindset to an abundance-based approach to activism Whether you're vegan, veg-curious, or simply interested in the political and ethical dimensions of what’s on your plate , this episode will challenge and inspire you. 🎧 Tune in and rethink what it means to eat with intention. Mindi joins The Scenic Route podcast today as we discuss the importance of forging your own path to building a successful business. Often, we are tempted to follow someone else's model, but it's crucial to remember that what works for one person may not work for you. We'll also be diving into the idea that we cannot out-hustle our limiting beliefs. We must focus on the positives to build trust in ourselves and our abilities. Mindi shares that it's easy to sit in the puddle of negativity and dwell on our failures, but it's essential to acknowledge our successes and use them as stepping stones to reach our next goal. Limiting beliefs can creep up on us in unexpected ways. The reality is that limiting beliefs can appear at any stage of business, and it's essential to recognize and address them to move forward. We'll also discuss why you should stop putting pressure on things you cannot control. Instead, we should explore the person we want to become in terms of our mindset, behaviours, and outcomes. Mindi explores the "be, do, and have" model and how it can help us achieve our goals. Do you follow all the 'shoulds' in business on how to show up and sell? Well, today I'm joined by Katherine Mackenzie-Smith, who will be breaking down visibility, and why there are seasons to it that you might not have noticed before. We discuss why there are fundamental things that you need to do for your business to function. Typically, you don't start your business for these things, but it's a part of the journey and how to handle juggling the good pieces with the not-so-fun features with using the seasons to your advantage. If you're not feeling like using social media to get visibility on your business, that's ok, but we explore that you need to use some channel, whether it's in-person events or paid ads; you need to find a way that works for you to gain visibility. And when it comes to visibility, it's not about going hard 24/7 on being visible, selling all the time, but instead trusting that when the time comes to rest and pause, it's ok to do that. We discuss why you'll resent and feel worn out by your business if you're putting too much pressure on yourself to create content because you're worried about when the next invoice is coming in and how to prevent that from happening. If that sounds like you, then listen to this week's episode. Ilonka shares how the results we create in our business are correlated to the emotion we spend most of our time in, and if you want to manage your time better, it's not down to the tactics like time blocking and planning your days; it's down to managing your emotions around what is happening. Do you sometimes find it hard to express how you're feeling? In today's episode, I'm joined by Lauren Best, a Certified Hypnotherapist, as we discuss the different ranges of emotions and how to start checking in and being aware of your emotions. Throughout this episode, we explore how your emotions can cause trauma in your body and how it's important we listen to what our bodies are trying to tell us. Lauren shares about when she was experiencing momentum in her business, her body told her to pause and rest and by putting her body first, she was able to create more ease and work on her self-care. No healing journey is linear, but by opening your heart to coming back to yourself, you can discover so many new doors on new paths that you hadn't imagined. And we explore the ways in which you can explore this healing work through the subconscious mind and how Lauren uses hypnosis as a tool with her clients to identify blocks, limiting beliefs, and rewrite old stories. It's ok if you don't experience overnight results when working through your emotions and feelings, but with time you'll learn to be in control of how you want to feel and react.
