Jane tells us about a huge theft of expensive bourbon from the Buffalo Trace distillery in Kentucky. This week Jane tells us about Bill and Melanie McGuire. When Bill disappeared, Melanie didn’t report him missing because she claimed he left her after they had a fight. Later, his dismembered body turned up inside of suitcases. Melanie maintained her innocence but the jury didn’t believe her. Deklan tells us about Anneke Lucas, who as a young girl in Belgium was forced into a trafficking ring. Members high in the Belgian government as well as gang members participated in the trafficking ring of young children. Anneke survived horrifying things for years to tell her story. This week Deklan tells us about Belgian serial killer, Marc Dutroux. In the 1980s and 1990s he victimized numerous children and killed at least 5 people. Several of his victims he kept locked in a dungeon below his home. His crimes led to a sentence of life in prison. Jane tells us about the National park, Crater Lake. A beautiful lake in southern Oregon that was formed by a collapsed volcano nearly 8000 years ago. The lake has many stories of hauntings, other worldly spirits, cryptids, and UFOs. This week Deklan tells us about the strange plan to rob a bank. Brian Wells participated in a very complex bank heist that included him wearing a collar around his neck that he believed was a fake bomb. Unfortunately for Brian, the bomb was real and it exploded after the robbery killing him. The plan was later exposed to be very strange. Jane tells us about the history and uses of polygraphs, commonly called the “lie detector” tests. These tests are often used in criminal cases and also for some employment uses. This week Deklan tells us about orca training at Sea World in San Diego, CA. Sea World has been known for decades as a marine life zoo. Unfortunately keeping large marine animals in captivity and training them for spectator shows has led to a few deaths. Dawn Brancheau was an orca trainer who died tragically from an incident with an orca whale at Sea World. Jane tells us about Pascal Payet. A French man who orchestrated multiple prison breaks but these weren’t any run of the mill prison break. This week Jane tells us about a lesser known serial killer, Herb Baumeister. In the 1980s and 1990s dozens of gay men went missing. Some were found within a few months while others are still listed as missing. The remains of several of those men were found in the woods of a farm near Indianapolis, IN. The owner of the farm took his life to avoid the questions. Deklan tells us about the tragedy of the Hindenburg accident in 1937. After several successful trips across the Atlantic Ocean, there was a terrible accident that led to the deaths of nearly 40 people when the zeppelin crashed and caught fire. This week Jane tells us about the brutal slaying of Jose and Kitty Menendez. Police didn’t initially suspect the now orphaned brothers, Lyle and Erik. Months later though the brothers were arrested for the crime. The trial took years to complete and multiple efforts for a final conviction. The case is currently under review for resentencing. This week Jane tells us about the kidnapping of 7 yo Steven Stayner. He was kidnapped by Kenneth Parnell who kept Steven for 7 long years and told everyone that Steven was his son. When Parnell kidnapped another young child, Timmy White, Steven helped the young boy and the two escaped. Deklan tells us about the possession of a young child who was given the pseudonym, Roland Doe. He went through more than one exorcism through the Catholic church. This week Deklan tells us about the life of Chesley Sullenberger, more commonly known as Captain Sully. He had an interest in flying since he was a young boy and spent his life working as a pilot and helping other pilots. This week Deklan tells us about Graham Young who had a deep interest in chemistry and Nazis. He liked to read books about both and he liked to slip poison into drinks of family and friends. In 1977, dozens of witnesses and victims reported seeing lights in the sky. This week Deklan tells us about the strange scene of a car accident in New Hampshire from 2004. The vehicle had been involved in a small accident on the side of the road. One witness reported speaking to a woman who claimed to have called AAA for assistance. The owner of the vehicle was Maura Murray. It is presumed that she was driving the vehicle but she hasn’t been seen since then. Jane tells us the history of Heceta Head lighthouse on the Oregon Coast. This week Deklan tells us about a cold case that took some interesting turns. Nicole van den Hurk was killed in 1995 in the Netherlands. Her stepbrother confessed to the murder in 2011 but later explained that his confession was false and done in an effort to exhume her body for DNA evidence. It proved to be a good tactic as it led to the arrest and conviction of the actual killer based on the DNA evidence. Jane tells us about a horse named Lady Wonder who was reported to have psychic powers. Her owners claimed she could predict political races and earthquakes. #98: Serial-Richard Cottingham, Mysterious-Hexham Heads, and Tom Collins
This week Jane tells us about the serial killer known as “The Torso Killer” or “Times Square Ripper.” His real name was Richard Cottingham and he committed several murders in New York and New Jersey. He was caught in 1980 but denied responsibility until 2009. In the early 2000s he started being interviewed by an investigator who was able to link him to at least 14 other cold case murders dating back to the 1960s. Deklan tells us about two brothers who dug up some strange carved artifacts in their backyard. Two strange looking stone heads were discovered by the Robson brothers and brought into their home. Strange things started happening to the family and their neighbors. The heads were given to various scientists for research purposes and they started reporting strange things too. This week Deklan tells us about dog breeder, Bobbie Jo Stinnett. She was befriended by a woman, Lisa Montgomery, who showed interest in Bobbie Jo’s dogs. Unfortunately, Montgomery wasn’t really interested in Bobbie Jo’s dogs but she was interested in her unborn baby. Montgomery took Bobbie Jo’s life and baby but she was caught soon after and given a hefty sentence, death. Jane tells us about a man suffering from severe amnesia. He was found unconscious behind a dumpster in 2004. Initially he couldn’t remember any details about his life and he gave himself the name Benjaman Kyle. #80: Kidnapped: Barbara Jane Mackle, Strange science: Lake Nyos, and the Just Off the Lake Cocktail
This week Jane tells us about the kidnapping of 20 year old, Barbara Jane Mackle. She was kidnapped for ransom by escaped prisoner, Gary Krist, and his girlfriend, Ruth Schier. Not only was Barbara kidnapped but she was buried alive. Krist was caught a couple of days after the kidnapping but Schier managed to stay on the run for months. She was the first female ever to be added to the FBI’s 10 most wanted list. Eventually both of the kidnappers went to jail and Barbara went on to live a good life. Deklan tells us about Lake Nyos in Cameroon. The beautiful lake has some strange science forming in the depths of it’s waters, with gasses building up at the bottom of the lake. One fateful day in 1986, the gas exploded from the bottom of the lake and killed thousands of people and livestock. #79: Unsolved: St Valentine’s Day massacre, Cult: Heaven’s Gate, and The Bootleg cocktail
This week Jane tells us about the gangs of Chicago in the roaring 20s. The big hitters were the Chicago Outfit and the North Side Gang. During prohibition, all the Chicago gangs were trying to use bootlegging as a key source of income which often caused fights with the other groups. A particularly brutal event took place on Feb 14, 1929 leading to 7 members and associates of the North Side gang getting shot to death. The identity of the shooters has never been solved. Deklan tells us about another cult, Heaven’s Gate. The leaders of the cult, Bonnie Nettles and Marshall Applewhite, formed it in 1974 but the headlines for the cult occurred in 1997. Members of the cult believed that a UFO was coming to earth to take them to the next plane of existence. #64: Happy Face Killer: Keith Jesperson, Confessed: Tom Randele, and the Jamaican Smile cocktail
This week Deklan tells us about serial killer, Keith Jesperson. He claimed he had nearly 200 victims but was convicted of far less. When someone else confessed to his crime he started claiming responsibility by leaving notes with a smiley face attached. This led to his nickname The Happy Face Killer. He was a truck driver with victims across the US.Jane tells us about a well liked man, Thomas Randele, who made a deathbed confession to his family. Just before he died he told his wife and daughter that decades before he had been involved in a serious crime that he was still wanted for. #63: Scream murder: Cassie Jo Stoddart, UFO: Malmstrom Air Force Base, and the Whiskey Sour cocktail
This week Jane tells us about the murder of Cassie Jo Stoddart. It is often referred to as the Scream murder because the perpetrators claimed to be inspired by the Scream movie series. The murderers, Torey Adamcik and Brian Draper, compared themselves to Ted Bundy and Columbine High School shooters. They wanted to be revered serial killers. Deklan tells us about a UFO sighting at the Malmstrom Air Force Base in Montana, home to several underground nuclear missiles. Several people reported seeing a red lighted UFO above the base. The inhabitants of this island do not like visitors and have been known to kill anyone trespassing on the island. #28 Hitman on the run-Edgardo Greco, Cephalopod attacks, and rum and coke cocktail
This week Jane tells us about Edgardo Greco. He was a hitman for the ‘Ndrangheta mob in Italy. He murdered two brothers when there was an internal conflict in the mob. He ran before he could be jailed and tried for the murders but he was convicted in absentia and sentenced to life in prison. It took authorities 16 years to find him hiding in plain sight in France. #27: Turkish prison escape, Acid bath murderer-John Haigh, and Escape from Alcatraz cocktail
This week Deklan tells us about a brutal serial killer, John Haigh. He was motivated by greed and completed some petty crimes that landed him in jail for a few years before he committed his first murder. He disposed of his victims in a horrific manner, submerging them in barrels full of sulphuric acid. His true victim count is not known, He was convicted of 6 and he confessed to 3 more. Jane tells us about two WW1 prisoners of war, EH Jones and CW Hill, who used a handmade Ouija board to fool their captors. Jones and Hill convinced everyone that they could speak with spirits of the dead who would lead them to buried treasure. This week Jane tells a hometown story that became a Christmas miracle. Two logging company mechanics find a newborn baby abandoned in the snow. The baby is nearly frozen and life saving measures must be taken. He is given the name Baby Benjamin Kenneth Forest. Just a few weeks later the baby finds his forever home. This episode Deklan tells us about Ryan Graves. He is a respected pilot who reported seeing multiple UFOs while he was flying. The UFOs were in different sizes and shapes with interesting flight capabilities. Over years, these objects were seen on a daily basis, often through heat vision and radar. #17: Rickie Tregaskis, The Boston Molasses Flood, and The Jersey Devil cocktail
This week Jane tells us about a bragging murderer, Rickie Tregaskis. He had been acquitted of murder and assault. Thinking he was safe, due to the double jeopardy rule in the UK, he proceeded to brag to several people about how he had gotten away with the murder. Unfortunately for him but fortunately for the victims, the double jeopardy rule changed in the UK and he was convicted decades later of the murder and assault. Deklan tells us about a tsunami and flood that occurred in Boston in 1919. This wasn't any average flood though. Millions of gallons of dark and sticky molasses suddenly rushed through the streets trapping and killing several people in the wake. It brought down buildings and caused a class action lawsuit. This week Deklan tells us about an alien encounter on the Kelly farm. It occurred in 1955 in Hopkinsville, KY. The witnesses reported a spacecraft landed and then they saw several creatures. This week Jane tells us about the Tungunka Event or Explosion. It was a mysterious explosion in the sky that occurred in Siberia in 1908. It took about 20 years for explorers to start investigating the area. They believed it was a meteorite crash site but no pieces of meteorite were ever found. There are several different theories as to what really happened that day but no one really knows. Deklan tells about Anatoly Moskvin. Russian authorities became concerned that someone was desecrating graves. Their investigation led them to Anatoly Moskvin who had been stealing corpses and keeping them in his home as dolls. This week Jane tells about a serial rapist and murderer in Paris, France. He was nicknamed Le Grêlé, or the pockmarked man, after witnesses described him. He was active in the 1980s and 1990s but wasn't identified until 2021. He confessed to his crimes in a suicide note to his wife. Deklan tells us about inventor Stanley Meyer. He was murdered by a hitman that was hired by his ex-wife who he had been divorced from for many years. This true story inspired the movie The House of Gucci. The tunnels are rumored to have been used for transporting kidnapped victims for sale into slavery on ships and that these tragedies caused the tunnels to be haunted to this day. This is the 3rd installment of our movie themed October spook-fest. This week we are featuring the brutal story of the kidnapping and murder of Mark Kilroy that inspired the horror movie Borderland.
