Happy New Year! Yaki and Tati are back from the holiday break. We have a great interview with author Jsin Graham, contemporary fiction and sometimes romance author. We talk about his procss, his catalog, and how poetry led him to a life . About Jsin:Jsin Graham is a communication strategist by day, who pens unapologetically real and tactile fiction centering the Black experience by night. A writer since the age of six, he has created everything from short stories to poems to song lyrics. Graham’s present focus, however, is on longer-form works that provide a broader canvas to paint the detailed narratives he enjoys composing. Since his initial release, Unacceptable Behavior: A Thirteen Story Introduction to Storytelling (2018), he has released a two-book novella series, one holiday-themed novelette, and appeared in Cleis Press’ 2022 anthology, The Big Book of Orgasms, Vol. 2. The contemporary adult fiction and reluctant Black romance author presents his writing as relatable, unpredictable, sexy, and ever-changing. Just like life. In his own words, “Black people are not a monolith, and thus neither is my storytelling.” Regardless of genre, erotica, romance, or something completely different, he writes for two reasons. To tell an enjoyable story and to convince you to come back for more. When not writing, the D.C. area native spends his time reading, with his family, and collaborating with entrepreneurs creatively. We interview author Jessica Terry, creator of nearly 25 indie books and several series about her upcoming release The Stubborn Kind. We also talk about her writing process, what inspired her to write romance and her job as a ghostwriter for some very popular folks. About Jessica: To Jessica, putting out a new book is twice as exciting as someone saying they brought her food. Writing was her first love (cliché alert) and she loves it as much now as she did when she was a child spending hours and hours holed up in her room creating. This Georgia peach has many interests, having majored in Sport Management at Georgia Southern and gotten certified in Neuromuscular Therapy from Rising Spirit Institute of Natural Health, but writing is always in the top spot. In addition to her novels, Jessica is also a copywriter and a ghostwriter and is working towards her degree in Communications. Jessica still lives in Georgia. What does black romance look like in the vast Black diaspora? I was happy to speak with Maëlla Kancel, a romance writer and podcaster from the French-speaking Carribean island of Guadalupe. Now living in France, Maëlla and I had a chance to discuss a wide array of topics such as the wide reach of Black American culture, the nuances of non-English speaking Black existence, and how romance needs to expand its borders to include non-English and Carribean Black- centered stories. We also talked a little about my debut, but the heart of the discussion was how we perceive French identity as an American. Good stuff! Shape Shifters? Hindu Nypmhs? and Idris Elba? What do they have in common. They were all inspiration for the new paranormal work by Suleikha Snyder. Our episode this week gets us ready for Spooky Season with an interview with the Indian-American author of contemporary, erotic, and paranormal romance. We talk all about her recent novel, just in time for Halloween, entitled Pretty Little Lion . About Suleikha: Suleikha Snyder is a best-selling and award-winning author of contemporary and erotic romance, whose works have been showcased in Entertainment Weekly, BuzzFeed, The Times of India, and NPR. A second-generation Indian-American, Suleikha grew up in the heartland of America and in two cultures. From an early age, Suleikha was enraptured by books, film, and television...finding a place to belong amidst the crew of the Millennium Falcon and outside the glittering ballrooms of the ton, looking in. She soon began writing original stories as well as fan fiction—something she still does today—but detoured into entertainment journalism rather than pursuing creative writing as a career. After more than a decade in print media, and well after her humble beginnings scribbling 21 Jump Street fic, Suleikha is successfully living out her dream of being a romance writer. Her short stories and novellas are sexy, diverse, and sometimes peppered with bits of Bengali or Hindi. Expect masala, masti, and maybe a little mayhem! A passionate advocate for diversity and inclusivity in publishing, Suleikha is frequently ranting when she should really be adding to her body of work. She currently lives in Chicago, finding inspiration in Bollywood films, daytime and primetime soaps, and anything that involves chocolate or bacon. Follow Suleikha at www.SuleikhaSnyder.com In Hot Topics in Romance, we talk about Eve's new bundle of joy, Moynetta Shaw's new hubby, and Tori Hart on keeping her last name and positive co-parenting. In Watching Romance , we are gearing up this weekend for our Christmas Movie Seasonm, starting with 3 movies on Hallmark: Christmas in my Hear (w/ Sheryl Lee Ralph), The Santa Stakeout w/ Tamera Mowery, and Boyfriend of Christmas Past with Katherine Kim. As a former art teacher, indie author Ruthie Lenor (twitter: @lenor_The) knows a thing or two about the creative process. In this episode of our #writingincolour series, I talk to Ruthie about falling in love with romance, writing that matters, growing up in Texas, and how being a former art teacher (and fanfic writer) allows her to be creative within her novels. Plus, a little something about angst (LOL). A little about Ruthie: Ruthie Lenor is a former art teacher who transferred her creativity from canvas to the writing world. Although she got her introduction into writing through fanfiction, it wasn’t until she read her first historical romance that she fell head over heels in love with romance. She loves reading all the ways people fall in love but writing uncomplicated, non-angsty love stories is what she does best. When she’s not writing you can find her being a chauffeur to her two kids where she lives with her high school sweetheart husband in Texas. Edwina-Martin Arnold's (IG: @EdwinaMartinaArnold1) fascinating, nearly two decade long journey through the world of romance publishing began with a successful run in traditional publishing. Now, she's redefining what romance means to her as an independent author who is publishing the romance she truly loves to write. In our latest #WritinginColour episode, Tati has the honor of talking to Edwina. We talk about writing romance on your own terms, family inspirations, diversity (or lack thereof) in the industry, and much more. A little about Edwina Martin-Arnold: Edwina Martin-Arnold is the author of several romance books. She is a hopeless romantic, and a true believer in happily ever after. However, Edwina knows that the path to real love is rarely straight forward. To the contrary, it's often paved with many turns and a peril or two, in real life and in the stories she creates. SEASON FINALE Can Romance and Culture connect? Romance in Colour is starting a new series, Writing in Colour, where we talk to authors of color from various backgrounds and locations, who are writing in the romance genre. We are highlighting the diversity of the genre and highlighting #Ownvoices with authors who are actively working to amplify writing that is unique, diverse, and most of all, romantic. When you think of the word "polyamory" do you think romance? Probably not. But author Savannah J. Frierson wants us to rethink the notion of what makes something, even a relationship, truly romantic and fulfilling. Our last author in our Writing in Colour series, the Harvard educated, South Carolina Native tells us how she got her agent, her inspirations for writing, and what it truly means to be a " late bloomer".
