Natalia Sylvester is the award-winning author of several novels for adults and young adults. Jones Award for Best Work of Fiction from the Texas Institute of Letters. Natalia's debut YA novel, RUNNING, was a 2020 Junior Library Guild Selection and a 2021 Rise: A Feminist Book Project List selection. Her most recent YA novel, BREATHE AND COUNT BACK FROM TEN, is out now from HarperCollins/Clarion Books. A MALETA FULL OF TREASURES, Natalia's first picture book (illustrated by Juana Medina), will be published by Dial Books in 2024. Natalia's non-fiction has appeared in the New York Times, Bustle, Catapult, Electric Literature, Latina magazine, and McSweeney's Publishing. Her essays have been anthologized in collections such as A MAP IS ONLY ONE STORY and A MEASURE OF BELONGING: WRITERS OF COLOR ON THE NEW AMERICAN SOUTH. Maricé Morales's parents are immigrants from Peru. She lived in Peru from age 12 to 17, when she returned to the United States to attend college. She graduated from George Mason University with a bachelor's degree in Global Affairs and French and a master's degree in public policy. She received a juris doctorate from the University of Maryland School of Law and received a public service award from the law school. During this time, she was involved in legal work extended from the Public Defender’s Office in New Orleans, LA to San Jose, Costa Rica at the Inter-American Court of Human Rights. From canvassing neighborhoods to encouraging jury participation in Louisiana, to contributing to the international legal framework around discrimination and excessive force against Afro-descendants. Still, while in law school, Morales competed in the National Latina/o Law Student Association's sixth annual moot court competition. In 2014, she was elected to the Maryland House of Delegates, as the first Latina to represent District 19 in Montgomery County, MD. Maricé received the Governor’s Award for her work combating Human Trafficking and was recognized in 2019 as one of the top 100 Most Influential Latina Leaders in the D.C., Maryland, and Virginia metropolitan area. Maricé currently practices law in the greater Washington, D.C. area, in her Law Office focusing on immigration, criminal defense, and personal injury law. She currently serves on the Montgomery College Board of Trustees , and the boards for the Jewish Council on Aging and Emerge Maryland. Yuki Nakandakari, simply known as Yuki, is a Peruvian chef from Washington DC considered by many as a natural powerhouse of creativity. Yuki, of Japanese ancestry, was born in Peru and grew up between Lima and Arequipa. He started his professional career in Tokyo, Japan, where he lived for 3 years in the early ’90s, absorbing old-school oriental techniques from the various places he worked at. He won the Professional Of The Year Award of 2016 by the Hispanic Maryland Chamber of Commerce and the certificate from the Congress of the United States of America, recognizing his merits to propel the rich Peruvian culture within the United States. Chef Yuki has also put Ocopa Restaurant on the 1st Michelin guide in Washington D.C. for 2017, where the Michelin inspector reviewed his creations with extreme pleasure and satisfaction. Elena is an Andean adoptee from Peru. Her family is from Puno, Peru, though she was born and adopted from Lima. Elena was adopted during the Fujimori regime right after Alan Garcia was out of office. Around three years after having a baby, about two-thirds of parents will notice that their relationship isn't as good as it used to be. Studies have found that how well parents get along with each other directly affects how their babies and kids grow and develop. In this episode, Nathalie chats with Dr. Melanie Ricaurte, a Licensed Psychologist, about how parents can maintain relationship satisfaction after having a baby, reduce relationship hostility, and reduce the incidence and severity of postpartum mood disorders. Dr. Melanie Ricaurte is the Clinical Director of Harmony Holistic. She is a licensed Psychologist, AASECT Certified Sex Therapist, and AASECT Certified Sex Therapy Supervisor. She is also certified as a Prepare/Enrich provider for premarital therapy and recently became certified as an NGH Hypnotherapist. Dr. Ricaurte has her Psy.D in Clinical Psychology and M. Ed in Human Sexuality from Widener University. She graduated from Cornell University with a B.S. in Human Biology, Health, and Society and is interested in the intersection between biological and social factors and how such factors relate to mental health and illness. Dr. Ricaurte has worked with diverse individuals of different races, ethnicities, religions, and sexual orientations in a variety of settings including inpatient hospitals and outpatient clinics as well as universities. Ashleigh Sisneros is an Information Technology Specialist and an Air Force Veteran. A ‘Network Administrator’ by trade, she has worked in all facets of IT with various government agencies. Having achieved early career success, she has made it her mission to help other Latina women in tech. At 17 she enlisted into the Air Force as a guard member for the State of Louisiana. Having lived through Katrina and other hurricanes, she remembered those in uniform who would hand out water and lifesaving supplies and knew she wanted to be a part of that. She served for 10 years, had 2 deployments, was activated for hurricane and state missions, and served at the nation’s capital during the 2020 inauguration. Today Ashleigh is currently working at the Department of Defense Educational Activity in Naples, Italy. She spends her free time traveling and trying to achieve her fun goal, to eat Peruvian food in each new country she visits! Ashleigh is first-generation and proud of her heritage as she always is trying to introduce people to Peru’s rich culture and food. 77: Supporting Talented Emerging and Established Female Filmmakers with Alexa Polar
Alexa Polar is a writer, director, and founder of Female Filmmakers Fuse; a nonprofit that promotes diversity, equality, inclusion, and a safe workplace for women in the film and television industry. Alexa recently wrote Marilyn Mexico, a feature-length biopic that focuses on Marilyn Monroe’s affinity for Mexican culture and her final trip to Mexico. Loz Dos Studios and BFT Media are in talks with Alexa regarding acquiring the screenplay. Alexa is set to direct the currently entitled feature Fons Vivus, a screenplay she wrote about a group of diverse vigilante women who come together joining forces for a greater cause in a deeply flawed legal system. After this, she placed her focus on R Culture, a feature drama that tackles the issues of rape culture in today's society. Whenever Alexa is not working on writing, prepping for directing, or directing; she is advocating for social causes against systemic racism, an uneven scale of the patriarch, and supporting causes for survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence. She often assists with immigration cases as a paralegal. 76 (English): Military to Civilian Transition with Victor de la Flor
Victor de la Flor was born in Passaic, NJ and partly raised in Orlando, FL to Peruvian parents. He decided to join the U.S. Marine Corps at the age of 20 in order to get a change of pace in life and pursue his desire for world travel. He chose the Military Justice job field which he felt would provide him good work experience over time. What was supposed to be a 4-year enlistment, turned into a 20-year Marine Corps career, mainly credited to the exceptional leadership and guidance he’s received. In 2020, Victor took to his art, design, and entrepreneurial skills and invented a uniform item called UnderCoverClip, which is now carried by retail military and tactical stores worldwide. In 2022, he decided to make his passion for art public, when he agreed to do a portrait commission for a friend, which then led to several more art commissions, participation in art shows, presenting at Fleet Week San Diego Art Exhibition, being a featured artist at the Oceanside Museum of Art and now becoming a sponsored artist attending and participating in a veteran and indigenous art exhibition being held in Chicago in 2023. Peruvian immigrant Anaís Azul (they/them) is a California-based composer-performer, Fulbright Scholar, and teaching artist. Described as “stunningly honest and vulnerable,” their artistry engages with music as a tool for community building, cross-genre collaboration, and collective healing. Last fall, Azul released their debut solo EP “Vulnerable” thanks to the support of the Yerba Buena Garden’s Festival 2022 Seed Commission. Their past releases can be found on all major streaming platforms. One of their past releases, “Mi Piel,” was featured on the Spotify editorial playlist “Best Non-Binary+ Artists of 2020.” Outside of their performance life, Anaís has been proud to serve as co-curator of the 2022 annual Día de los Muertos exhibition “To Love and be Loved in Return” at SoMarts. Currently, they teach group and private music lessons in Spanish & English and trans-inclusive Spanish classes virtually. With almost two decades of experience, Loza has been commissioned to paint portraits and custom wall art for private and public art collectors throughout North & South America. After a nation-wide search, Alex Paul was commissioned to sculpt a historic monument of Thaddeus Stevens also known as the "Old Commoner", "Father of the 14th Amendment", and "Savior of Pennsylvania's public education". The bronze sculpture is scheduled to be installed on April 2, 2022 in Gettysburg, PA. Estuardo Rodríguez is a principal and co-founder at the Raben Group focused on Government Affairs and Communications. A lawyer by training, he specializes in direct lobbying in the financial services and telecommunications sectors. Having cultivated a powerful network of media relationships, Estuardo is also Raben’s Counsel on Media and Communications. Throughout his diverse political career, Estuardo’s commitment to outreach in the Hispanic community has been a constant. Through his work at the DNC he built a cross-platform, Spanish-language media network that was leveraged in support of John Kerry’s presidential campaign. He was an attorney at the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development under Secretaries Henry Cisneros and Andrew Cuomo, and has worked on behalf of the U.S. Department of State as an independent political analyst in Latin America and Europe. Joselyn Fonseca Palacios was born in Lima Peru and moved to Los Angeles at the age of 8. She is part of the Los Angeles Department of Water where she leads public works projects throughout the city. Her focus is on water treatment facilities to ensure safe drinking water for Angelinos. As a young professional in the field, she is currently navigating through her journey to becoming a licensed Architect. She graduated from the University of Southern California with a Bachelor of Architecture and a minor in Consumer Behavior with the Alpha Rho Chi Medal, recognizing her leadership and service to the future of the profession. She is an active member of the National Organization of Minority Architects, where she serves as Co-Director for Project Pipeline Bootcamp, a summer camp dedicated to exposure to architecture and related professions for the youth. Her passion revolves around inspiring, educating, and mentoring first-generation low-income students. In addition, she volunteers her time during Peruvian elections to help her fellow compatriotas in Los Angeles vote and is Chair of Communications for the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers. Her most recent YA novel, BREATHE AND COUNT BACK FROM TEN, is out now from HarperCollins/Clarion Books. Natalia's non-fiction has appeared in the New York Times, Bustle, Catapult, Electric Literature, Latina magazine, and McSweeney's Publishing. 49 (English) Giving Politics a Chance, with Maricé Morales, Candidate for Montgomery County Council
Maricé Morales's parents are immigrants from Peru. She lived in Peru from age 12 to 17, when she returned to the United States to attend college. She graduated from George Mason University with a bachelor's degree in Global Affairs and French and a master's degree in public policy. She received a juris doctorate from the University of Maryland School of Law and received a public service award from the law school. During this time, she was involved in legal work extended from the Public Defender’s Office in New Orleans, LA to San Jose, Costa Rica at the Inter-American Court of Human Rights. From canvassing neighborhoods to encouraging jury participation in Louisiana, to contributing to the international legal framework around discrimination and excessive force against Afro-descendants. Still, while in law school, Morales competed in the National Latina/o Law Student Association's sixth annual moot court competition. In 2014, she was elected to the Maryland House of Delegates, as the first Latina to represent District 19 in Montgomery County, MD. Maricé received the Governor’s Award for her work combating Human Trafficking and was recognized in 2019 as one of the top 100 Most Influential Latina Leaders in the D.C., Maryland, and Virginia metropolitan area. Maricé currently practices law in the greater Washington, D.C. area, in her Law Office focusing on immigration, criminal defense, and personal injury law. She currently serves on the Montgomery College Board of Trustees , and the boards for the Jewish Council on Aging and Emerge Maryland. Yuki Nakandakari, simply known as Yuki, is a Peruvian chef from Washington DC considered by many as a natural powerhouse of creativity. Yuki, of Japanese ancestry, was born in Peru and grew up between Lima and Arequipa. He started his professional career in Tokyo, Japan, where he lived for 3 years in the early ’90s, absorbing old-school oriental techniques from the various places he worked at. He won the Professional Of The Year Award of 2016 by the Hispanic Maryland Chamber of Commerce and the certificate from the Congress of the United States of America, recognizing his merits to propel the rich Peruvian culture within the United States. Chef Yuki has also put Ocopa Restaurant on the 1st Michelin guide in Washington D.C. for 2017, where the Michelin inspector reviewed his creations with extreme pleasure and satisfaction. Alex Paul Loza is a visual artist based in Chattanooga, TN with his heart for social advocacy and a deep appreciation of figurative narrative art. He received his BFA from the American Academy of Art in Chicago, IL. With almost two decades of experience, Loza has been commissioned to paint portraits and custom wall art for private and public art collectors throughout North & South America. After a nation-wide search, Alex Paul was commissioned to sculpt a historic monument of Thaddeus Stevens also known as the “Old Commoner”, “Father of the 14th Amendment”, and “Savior of Pennsylvania’s public education”. The bronze sculpture is scheduled to be installed on April 2, 2022 in Gettysburg, PA. On completion, the Stevens’s monument would be the first public sculpture in the nation.

Elena is raising an Afro-Indigenous daughter whom she absolutely adores. Her daughter is the reason Elena loves her people and community that much harder. In his current roles, he serves as the Senior Coordinator of Undocumented Students Services at Cal Poly Pomona in Los Angeles. Nathalie and Delia discuss how she announced to her friends and how they dealt with immigrating to the USA. Delia Rios was born and raised in Lima, Peru, and moved to the United States at the age of 13. She graduated from Rutgers University with a Bachelor of Science in Industrial and Systems Engineering in May 2009. For various years, she was an active member of SHPE (Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers), where she held various positions including Chapter President at Rutgers University. Diego was born in Lima, Peru and moved to the United States with his family when he was 9 years old, undocumented. Diego embraced adversity and overcame many obstacles as an undocumented immigrant in the U.S. Diego graduated top 1% from Florida State University with two bachelor's degrees in less than four years. DACA allowed him to start working in corporate America as a software developer for General Motors and soon discovered that he wanted a career shift. After realizing that corporate America wasn't for him, Diego pursued his passion for Real Estate. Here is my conversation with Elena, owner of Brooklyn Warmi Designs jewelry line. Elena is an Andean adoptee from Peru. Her family is from Puno, Peru, though she was born and adopted from Lima. Elena was adopted during the Fujimori regime right after Alan Garcia was out of office. Finding community has been a long journey. Reconnecting with her biological family has given Elena a sense of connection back to Peru. Elena is raising an Afro-Indigenous daughter whom she absolutely adores. Her daughter is the reason Elena loves her people and community that much harder. Elena wants her daughter to have representation as she grows up and to see the beauty in our people. Learning to accept that adoption IS part of the diaspora has been liberating. Elena has found herself within a community that is accepting and understanding. Ureta (He/Him/His) born and raised in Lima, Perú is a Peruanx, First-Generation, Latinx, Indigenous, and Social Justice Advocate in California. He Came to the U.S. in 2003. At an early age, he understood that one day he would face the reality of being Undocumented. Through his journey, Mecir has been involved with multiple immigrant organizations and movements, one of them being the "Dreamer" movement, although, he does not call himself a "Dreamer". These experiences amongst his love for his family and community have influenced his passion for Higher Education. A former College Tennis Player, Mecir holds an Associate's in Sociology, Bachelor's in Spanish with an Emphasis on Latin-American Literature, and a Master's in College Counseling. In his current roles, he serves as the Senior Coordinator of Undocumented Students Services at Cal Poly Pomona in Los Angeles. A program founded to provide support services and resources to immigrant communities at his institution. Melissa Rivero is the author of The Affairs of the Falcóns, which won the 2019 New American Voices Award and a 2020 International Latino Book Award. The book was also longlisted for the PEN/Hemingway Debut Novel Prize, the Aspen Words Literary Prize, and the Center for Fiction’s First Novel Prize. Born in Lima, Peru, and raised in Brooklyn, she is a graduate of NYU and Brooklyn Law School. Melissa currently works as in-house legal counsel at a startup. She still lives in Brooklyn with her family. She has worked in Emergency and community settings that have provided support in the Latino community with cultural sensitivity in mental health. Claudia continues to connect with Latino organizations such as ENLACE, a group that connects community leaders to engage the public with cultural events and beyond. Claudia was a special guest several times in “La Hora Social” on Latina 102.3 with Norsan Media to discuss mental health topics within the Latino Community. Claudia is also the founder of Vida Coaching and Consulting Corp. Her company focuses on life coaching motivation and goal development. Meyling is a Chinese-Peruvian American, mother of 2, and future Veterinary Technician. Meyling was born in Lima, Peru, and move to the U.S. around the age of 7 years old. Meyling attended the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale and has professional experience in the Hospitality Industry. She is currently pivoting her career and earning her Veterinary Technician degree from Purdue University online. Meyling loves animals and has grown up with lots of them – dogs, birds, and Peruvian Paso horses. In this episode, we discuss pivoting into a new career while raising bilingual and multicultural children, feeling like an outsider, and wanting to be a “normal” American girl. Alex Paul Loza (Lima, Perú 1978) is a visual artist based in Chattanooga, TN with his heart for social advocacy and a deep appreciation of figurative narrative art. He received his BFA from the American Academy of Art in Chicago, IL. With almost two decades of experience, Loza has been commissioned to paint portraits and custom wall art for private and public art collectors throughout North & South America. He has also lead, created, and collaborated with national muralists in several public art projects in Chicago and Chattanooga. In addition to creating public artworks, Loza spends time in his studio creating oil paintings and sculptures to exhibit in local galleries and museums. Loza has contributed to numerous organizations by offering art classes, workshops, and demonstrations to the community, including serving on committees and boards such as the advisory committee for “Our America: The Latino Presence in American Art” exhibit, a collection drawn entirely from the Smithsonian American Art Museum (2017), the Latin American advisory committee for the Hunter Museum of American Art, council member for the CHI Memorial Arts in Medicine Council, and member of the Chattanooga/ Hamilton County Community Arts Team for the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts’ Any Given Child Initiative. After a nation-wide search, Alex Paul was commissioned to sculpt a historic monument of Thaddeus Stevens also known as the “Old Commoner”, “Father of the 14th Amendment”, and “Savior of Pennsylvania’s public education”. The bronze sculpture is scheduled to be installed on April 2022 in Gettysburg, PA. On completion, the Stevens’s monument would be the first public sculpture in the nation. Joannie Diaz (she/her/hers) is a Peruvian-American who started her career on Wall Street as a Trading Analyst and then pivoted her career to Diversity and Inclusion. In her current role, she helps advance the company’s global D&I initiatives by being a thought leader while providing advice and executing the strategy for D&I in the business to which she is aligned. She has previous experience working as a D&I program manager at Bank of America and Brown Brothers Harriman. There she helped build, manage, and execute the global D&I strategy. Ana Isabel was born in Peru and arrived in the US when she was eight years old. She's a professional photographer focusing on social and political events. Most recently, she photographed Secretary Julián Castro and Senator Warren's presidential bid. Ana has photographed over 200 weddings and 500 headshot sessions, along with two presidential candidates. As a photographer, her goal is to help her clients feel confident in front of the camera. 06 (English): Coming from Peru as a teenager, a conversation with Sissy Paulino
Sissy is a Social Media Specialist - a career she loves! Social media has allowed her to express her creativity, and connect with Peruvian communities. Sissy was born and raised in Peru. She grew up in a very unusual household, her dad was highly involved in my academics, and her mom worked. She came to the U.S. at the age of 16 when her mom got transferred to work at a Peruvian consulate in Los Angeles. She knows what a privilege it was for her immigrant story to start in this way. In high school, Sissy got told she wasn’t going to go far and instead should marry to “fix her papers.” Nevertheless, she persisted. Sissy has a bachelor’s degree in Communication Studies from CSUN and a master’s degree in Communication Management from USC. Sissy’s family in Peru was directly affected by COVID-19. She lost an uncle. When this happened, she started to inform herself more about the situation in Peru. She wanted to do something! And that's how KUSKA was born, designs with a purpose. Kuska is launching in the upcoming weeks. A portion of the proceeds will go to a non-profit in Peru, helping families affected by COVID-19. Hillmer Reyes Murillo, creció en Ancash y hizo parte de la secundaria en Lima y luego emigró a Hartford, Connecticut, EEUU, donde terminó sus estudios secundarios. Estuvo 17 años en Estados Unidos para luego regresar a radicar en el Perú en 2005. Hillmer tiene maestría en ingeniería electrónica por Cornell University, maestría en administración pública por Harvard University y bachiller en física por Amherst College. Actualmente, Hillmer viene liderando Platia.app una startup que está desarrollando infraestructura financiera para catalizar el desarrollo rural. Hillmer también se ha desempeñado en el sector público como Regidor de la Municipalidad de Lima Metropolitana y ha sido Director General de Industria y Director de Competitividad en el Ministerio de la Producción. Hillmer tiene amplia experiencia como gestor de proyectos tecnológicos en las principales empresas de telecomunicaciones de Estados Unidos y Canadá, así como en el sector financiero en el Perú como Vicepresidente de Innovación y Tecnología de Globokas Perú, que opera la red de agentes corresponsales bancarios más grande del Perú. She immigrated to the USA in the 90s. Her family set roots in Montgomery County, MD. Presently, she lives in Northern Virginia - as it is a hub for Cybersecurity careers and opportunities. Silvia graduated from George Mason with a degree in Information Technology and a concentration in Cyber Security. One of her personal missions is to encourage more Latinx young aspiring professionals to join the ever-growing Cyber community. She is a co-founder and president of Fundacion Puro Peru (FPP), a cultural non-profit. FPP serves the diverse DMV community by organizing interactive events that showcase the richness of the Peruvian culture. Mi nombre es Nathalie, y soy una chica peruana viviendo en Estados Unidos. La idea de este podcast nació del querer reflexionar más sobre mi experiencia como inmigrante. Uno de los objetivo de este podcast es compartir historias del inmigrante peruano en Estado Unidos - como, cuando, y porque algún día dejo el Perú. Cuales fueron sus experiencias como recién llegado, y cómo se identifica ahora. En lo personal, me gustaría que este podcast sirva como una colección de memorias - ya que muchos de nosotros somos la primera generación inmigrante. También, quisiera que este podcast sea como un puente que nos ayude a conectarnos más a nuestras raíces peruanas. Cada dos semanas conoceremos la historia de un inmigrante peruano. Las entrevistas serán una mezcla entre español, inglés, y spanglish. Las experiencias de nuestros invitados son muy personales y pinta un nuevo retrato de lo que significa ser un inmigrante peruano. Espero que reciban estas historias con la mente y el corazón abierto.
