Julie "Jules" McAlister is the second veteran police officer to be given a Police Assistance dog through the Victoria Police Blue Ribbon Foundation. The black Labrador Charlie-Kane has made a major difference to her life. And Julie's been through a lot; including a PTSD diagnosis, being forced to retire "ill-health", a suicide attempt and getting accidentally shot with a shotgun at a rifle range. In March 2023, Julie was officially recognised for her service with Victoria Police, given an apology, her badge was given back to her "retired" and she was handed a certificate of service. October is cyber-safety awareness month, so it makes sense I sit with Australia’s cyber-safety expert, Susan McLean. Susan spent 27 years in Victoria Police where she was known as” the cyber cop”. She was the first Vic Pol officer appointed to a position involving cyber-safety and young people. Susan is highly credentialed and trained extensively with Dallas Police’s Internet Crimes Against Children Taskforce and completed the University Certificate in Child Safety on the Internet from the UK’s University of Central Lancashire. Reverend Jim Jung hasn't always worked with Victoria Police. The Senior Chaplain grew up In Melbourne's south, trained to be a motor mechanic, played local footy and was the first person in his family to obtain a Bachelor's degree. He's had a fascinating background working with NGO's in Spain, with Romanian gypsy communities, in Vietnam and Uganda. This year the Victoria Police Chaplaincy commemorates it's 50th anniversary so it's real honour to sit with Jim and discuss how the Chaplaincy continues to make a difference in the job. Sergeant Barry "Baz" Randall grew up on the NSW Central Coast. Here he gained a passion for rugby and surfing. Barry moved interstate in 1994 to join Victoria Police when he was the victim of an attempted murder that ended in a fatal shooting. He was diagnosed with PTSD and transferred to a coastal area. He became a Detective working in sexual offences and child abuse investigation. 3 years ago, Barry started Operation Soul Surf; an award-winning program that helps first responders and veterans just like him who're dealing with trauma and PTSD. Allan Sicard admits he's made mistakes in his career. A rare admission from a former NSW Police Superintendent. In a police culture that's often autocratic and unforgiving, Allan is upfront about his short-comings and says what he's learnt has made him a better leader. He's recently published a book; "The Courage to Lead" and believes leadership involves learning from your mistakes. He spent 40 years in the job and was involved in the Mosman Collar Bomb in 2011 and was the forward Commander for the first two hours of the Lindt Cafe Siege in 2014. Wayne "Snapper" Rotherham is a legend in the job. The former Detective Inspector's resume reads like a boy's own adventure. Snapper went to London on an extradition, worked on the Russell Street and Turkish Consulate bombings and the infamous "Mad Max". It's often been said a dog is man's best friend. A trained dog may also be the best friend for any veteran police officer who's been diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Injury (PTSI) or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The Police Assistance Dog (PAD) program run by the Blue Ribbon Foundation in partnership with Protecting the Protectors is providing highly trained psychiatric dogs to former and veteran Victoria Police members who've been wrestling with their mental health. Former officers who've been paired with a dog describe the experience as "life changing". Retired Victoria Police Detective Superintendent Pat Boyle talks about his work with this program and how he continues to make a difference. Bob Kumar re-joins me on The Crime Couch to talk about youth crime, contest mentions, life as a Magistrate and retirement The former Deputy Chief Magistrate of Victoria spent nearly 40 years on the bench. Bob's been described as " a visionary Magistrate" and "a man of the people". He introduced the state's Koori Court and created the contest mention; a hearing that allows an accused person to understand what sentence they'd get in exchange for a guilty plea. Bob Kumar is a former Magistrate who spent nearly 40 years on the bench. He presided over the Broadmeadows Magistrates Court and also appointed as Victoria's Deputy Chief Magistrate. A hearing that allows an accused person to understand what sentence they might get in exchange for a guilty plea. Glenn "Dutchy" Holland wasn't always a Victoria Police Sergeant. He used to work in the casino industry on a tiny island called Tinian and on international cruise ships. Dutchy's been in the job for 21 years starting in Frankston on the van. He's been a detective and currently working as an operational member in Melbourne. His work around mental health and PTSD is significant. And recognised. In 2018, Dutchy was the Blue Ribbon Officer of the Year. Mark “Trigger” Tregellas has broken his spine, knee, shoulder and elbow. He's been shot in the face and battled with cancer. The former Victoria Police Leading Senior Constable has served 31 years mainly in three remote coastal towns. Like many operational police officers, Trigger's dealt with lunatics, drunks, bizarre situations, neo-Nazis and dead bodies. He's also the recipient of a highly prestigious Clarke Silver medal. Trigger's written a book "Backup is three hours away" with Big Sky Publishing. It's a rollicking good read about his life and career and on the shelves in June. In the 1990's Deb Keogh was one of the few female detectives "in the job". It was challenging. The former Victoria Police Sergeant worked in traffic operations, accident investigation and as a Detective stationed in the suburbs, including working with my dear father when he was Chief Supt in "E" district (Dandenong). Deb retired from ill-health after 34 years of service. She's still dealing with PSTD after being shot at with a crossbow during a domestic. The 29th of May 2011 is a date that changed Queensland Police Detective Sonya Leeding's world forever. Tim Egan is not your average police member. The retired AFP Superintendent has served 34 years in three continents. Before joining the Northern Territory Police, Tim was a mine worker, timber millhand, builder's laborer and bank clerk. His role "in the job" proved just as varied. The 85-year-old worked in some of Australia's most remote police stations, as an Alice Springs Prosecutor and an Inspector in Darwin during Cyclone Tracey before joining the Custom Department's Narcotics Bureau and working with Scotland Yard and Victoria Police on joint taskforce investigations. Sheree Moore still hears the gunshots from the Queen Street shootings involving killer Frank Vitkovic. It's not something you ever forget, she says. Christine "Chris" McIntyre was the first female to join the infamous Breaking Squad. The gutsy officer had an extraordinary career; once leaping on the back of a crook attempting to put a sleeper-hold on him as he held her partner at gunpoint! Christine also recalls hiding in a broom cupboard from crims when working undercover in BCI. The former Victoria Police detective led the way for women in the job; was the first female to run her own police station and be elected Director of the Police Association Credit Union. This is part 2 of an interview I did 20 years ago with former Victoria Police Detective Superintendent Alan Pleitner. I interviewed Alan when writing Billy "The Texan" Longley's biography. He was a Detective Senior Constable in the Homicide Squad when Melbourne's waterfront war was underway. Alan talks about the role of the Homicide Squad Detective and how they work hard to bring justice to the victim. Alan was working when the Painters and Dockers' boss Pat Shannon was murdered at the Druids Hotel in 1973. Senior Constable Alex Prestney knows more than most about road trauma. The Victoria Police officer lost his brother Joshua in the Eastern Freeway crash on the 22nd of April 2020. Joshua was one of four Victoria Police members tragically killed in the accident. Alex is articulate, publicly expressing what he's going through. He's even returned to his role in Highway Patrol. I can't even imagine how difficult this trauma has been for him and his family. But he's not one to stand still. Alex is about to run from Mildura to Melbourne, a 560 kilometre run starting on July 31st. All monies raised will go to road trauma victims and the Amber Community. Dutchy's worked on the van, as a Detective in Crime Command and is currently operational on Melbourne's frontline. But it's Dutchy's work in mental health where he really makes a difference. Seven years ago, at the request of his boss who was retiring due to mental ill-health, Dutchy started a group, "Protecting The Protectors". Last year, he was the recipient of an APM for his work in mental health. Not that you'd know it; Dutchy is a quiet hero who continues to make a difference every day, whether he's running or eating a doughnut. Just because you're a good operational police officer doesn't mean you'll be a good leader. Leadership in policing has never been more important, more challenging and under more scrutiny. After working for 36 years in Victoria Police and the AFP, Phil Shepherd is making a difference in this space. The former Inspector has worked with the FBI, Royal Canadian Mounties and the Met helping develop leadership in the counter-terrorism program before establishing his own consultancy. The Victorian Coroner criticised Victoria Police this week for not banning one-up patrols after Senior Constable Tony Hogarth-Clarke's murder in 2005. This horrendous incident changed Dave Clarke's life. The former Detective Leading Senior Constable was a dear friend and colleague and arrived on the scene minutes after he'd been killed. Former Detective Sergeant Mark Bagally is like many of the "D's" I've interviewed on The Crime Couch. He did his time as a tough, hard-nosed Detective in the Rape, Armed Robbery, Drug and Homicide Squads before leading special duties teams and regional CIU's. Then one day, the Victoria Police officer put down his gun and handcuffs and picked up a paint brush. After leaving the job in 2016, Mark is now a renown Impressionist painter. Margie Lewis has just retired after 43 years in Victoria Police. The former Inspector had a diverse career from General Duties, NCA's Surveillance Unit, Ethical Standards, Welfare to the State Emergencies and Support Command. Despite wrangling some prejudice and sexual harassment, Margie triumphed becoming a commissioned officer; a rank she never imagined she'd reach. She claims it's all to do with having the right attitude and not letting anyone or anything stop you! Every day, at least 8 Australians die by suicide. Police and first responders are some of the groups most at risk. Well, Drew Gormlie is doing something about it. He's the CEO of Life Central, an Australian agency that provides programs and support to people at risk. Currently he's working with Victoria and Tasmania Police and the US Military. Recently they focused on the small Victorian town of Corryong - which has a high rate of youth suicide - working with the local police, with great results. Street gangs and crime go hand in hand. Former Detective Superintendent Pat Boyle is an expert in gang warfare. What he doesn't know about gangs isn't worth knowing. He's highly credentialed and worked in Victoria Police's crime squads for most of his life. It was his passion for street gangs that led him into academia. He secured a Churchill Scholarship to do further research which led him to completing a Masters. Pat talks about who's who in the zoo on The Crime Couch.
