Kyha Scott is the Founder and Creative Director of One Day Bridal and Chosen by One Day. Being that Lauren and I are in the early stages of planning our wedding, it made sense to get one of Australia’s greatest success stories in this space, to pick their brain on how it all works. Polly Harding (aka PJ the DJ), is one half of Kiis FM’s Jase & PJ, radio host and a media personality. The entertainment factor of Jase & PJ is emphasised in the hilarious dynamic of their relationship. Lauren and I consume Jase & PJ daily, thoroughly enjoying the weekday antics. How these two don’t have their own TV show, or personalised blue ticks on Instagram is beyond me, and this episode further highlights that.
Tue, November 19, 2019
Joshua San (the.CWolf) is a Photographer, Storyteller and Entrepreneur who covers the world of Lifestyle, Celebrities and Film. Josh came to my attention via Melbourne I Love You (see Episode 25) years ago, and it was at that point he became my equal favourite photographer with Northborders & 7th Era. Susan Alberti AC is the former Managing Director of DANSU Group, Chairman of the Susan Alberti Research Foundation, former Vice President of the Western Bulldogs, former National President of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), and Companion of the Order of Australia (AC) - amongst an array of titles. The Football Lady has certainly had a long and storied life, rolling with the punches as they launched directly at her. Sue has three primary goals in life; create a Women’s Football League, have her beloved Bulldogs win a premiership, and find a cure for Diabetes. So far, she has two out of three - and I wouldn’t be betting against her on the third.
Tue, October 22, 2019
Radio Mike and Jack Post are two of Australia’s most unique radio producers and panel operators. With combined experience across shows such as Hamish & Andy, Wil Anderson, Grubby & DeeDee, Christian O’Connell, and Luke & Lewis - these two understand what it takes to grab the attention of an audience. I couldn’t help but want to get them on the show with the formation of their very own band, Release The Sounds, and their new self-titled album. Imagine a cross between Weird Al Yankovic and Blink 182 - a serious, yet comedic approach to social commentary.

Alex McBride is the Founder of The 5TH Watches, a Melbourne-based watch company that creates limited runs of high quality and affordable watches. It’s been fascinating to see the growth of The 5TH of the last few years, and unsurprisingly Alex knows Marty Fox (from episode 123) - providing us with some unique insights. What I like about Alex is his goals of hard work and legacy, and how his grandfather inspired his passion that ultimately became a fast-growing watch business.

Luke Kidgell and Lewis Spears are stand-up comics, YouTubers, co-hosts of the Luke & Lewis Show, and hosts of their own separate podcasts, Memoirs of a White Guy, and Spearhead Sundays, respectively. After leaving radio in April, the boys are back making more content than ever, posting twice a week with their joint podcast show, in addition to content they release on their separate YouTube channels, podcasts and stand-up tours. This is the second time we’ve had either of them in the studio, but also technically the second time we’ve had them in the studio, together. As you’ll hear in the episode – and Lewis likes to tease us about – is that we never released the first joint episode as we had major issues with the video. If you’re a lucky Luke & Lewis patron, you may get access to the audio-only special cut...who knows?
Tue, September 03, 2019
Paul Roos is the former Coach of the Sydney Swans FC and Melbourne FC, Director at Performance by Design, Commentator at Fox Footy, and husband to Tami Roos. Roosy, as he’s commonly known, is undoubtedly one of Australia’s greatest thinkers on leadership. His constant focus on “process” was incredibly new in a field that often leads with experimentation - earning him the rare status as an authority. So I couldn’t help but jump at the opportunity to have Paul on the show.
Tue, August 27, 2019
Northborders (Mike) and 7th Era (Liam) are photographers and YouTubers based in Melbourne, Australia. These two are easily some of the most talented creatives in this space, so I couldn’t help but want to get them in for a round-table conversation on all things photography. Unsurprisingly, they’re both part of a new generation ditching university degrees to focus on real world experience, which accelerates their further potential in the process.
Wed, August 21, 2019
Chris Smith is the Founder and Director of BIG Esports, a company that helps brands build and activate their Esports strategy. Having toured the likes of Sam Harris, Maajid Nawaz, Steve Wozniak, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Chelsea Manning & many more - it’s clear that her mission in life is to remind the world that smart thinking is cool. In my opinion, her work has never been more important, showing both the left and right of politics that they can get along through proper long-form discourse.

Steph Claire Smith, is the Co-Founder of powerful fitness and health brand Keep it Cleaner, as well as fashion brands Soda Shades and Midnight Co. Steph is also the Co-Host of the KIC Podcast, Co-Author of A Girl's Guide to Kicking Goals, face of Bondi Sands and ambassador for both BABY-G and Bras n Things. I said in Laura’s episode that both Steph and Laura are like The Rock and Kevin Hart of young female inspiration in Australia. Steph is undoubtedly a Kingmaker and one of the most overlooked marketing talents in business. To create not just Keep It Cleaner, but forge two other brands is a monumental feat, and can only be done if you understand both markets and people. Steph is an entrepreneur to keep track of over the next few years.
Tue, July 30, 2019
Genevieve Day is the Founder of talent management agency, Day Management, which represents clients across the Digital Talent & Podcasting space. She’s strategically smart at selling, while also having a feel for where industry trends are moving, and how to develop tone. Giving her a unique sense of “where the puck is going”.

Sam Wood is the Founder of 28 by Sam Wood, The Woodshed, and the original GeckoSports. He’s the third Bachelor of Australia’s series airing in 2015, meeting his now-wife, Snezana, on the show. What I respect about Sam is his humble attitude that was forged in the decade before The Bachelor even took place. His hard work ethic, combined with an appreciation for time with family, is something that as a man I can’t help but look up to.
Tue, July 16, 2019
Tommy McIntosh is the Creative Director of Tommy Collins by Atlantic Group, which has catered for the Portsea Polo, Fashion Week, Alex Perry’s Runway Show, the Secret Garden and many more major events. He’s also the Co-Owner of Tommy Collins Group, which has created numerous hospitality ventures including Almond Milk Co, House of Lulu White, The Hampton’s Bakery, The Villager, Hawk & Hunter Cafe and The Little Ox Brighton to just name a few. I’ve known Tommy from my very early days in the hospitality industry, when I was just a starry eyed kid working at The Botanical in South Yarra. Tommy was one of my industry idols, and easily ran my favourite cafe The Little Ox in Brighton. Both Tommy and his business partner, Ben, have always maintained a principle-first approach to quality and unique events, catering many of my own personal family events over the years. He’s great at what he does, and an even nicer bloke. In this episode we covered: * Marty Fox & turtlenecks * First catering clients * The rise of The Little Ox * Working with Ben Avramides * Cafes and Almond Milk Co. * The unique business model * Joining with Atlantic Group * Balance and family time

Mark Nicholson and Seb Peart are the Co-Founders of cartoon studio Stepmates. These champions of low-brow “bottom of the barrel” humour are creating hilariously animated satire, with a TV series on the way and hopefully a podcast back after a very long “ three week hiatus”. I absolutely love these blokes, there’s no secret in that. They’re quite easily two of the funniest talents Australia has produced in the cartoon space for a very long time. Cutting through the bullshit, and reducing an – oftentimes – critically overthought topic, to a key statement. In a world where being politically moderate is somehow radical, these two gentlemen are able to sound out what the silent majority is really thinking, with brilliantly simple animation. This was an incredibly funny episode as usual, where we covered: * Status update and their TV deal * Insurance & medicals * Developing the show * The Stepmates team * The making of South Park * Avoiding burnout and anxiety * Centrism & censorship * Being offended by history * Hate speech, TikTok & free speech

Zoe Demkiw is a self-taught baker and Founder of Bake Me Cake Me , as well as the Co-Founder of bladder cancer awareness group BCA Australia. Zoe embodies the perseverance and work ethic of the founder she admires in Ray Kroc (of McDonald’s fame) – who was the inspiration behind her favourite film, The Founder. What you’ll learn from this episode, is that the principles which make up her perseverance, stem from the many quotes, proverbs and lessons that her late father gave her, as well as the persistence and entrepreneurial spirit her family holds. The business of personalised biscuits and cakes will definitely be a growing niche in the years to come. As Bake Me Cake Me grows, Zoe is one individual to watch. In this episode we covered: * Her Ukrainian background * Lessons learnt from her father * How her love of baking began * Tough times & breaking the negative feedback loop * Advice to those with anxiety and depression * The business of Bake Me Cake Me * Staying true and authentic on social media * Starting Bladder Cancer Australia

Jonathan Hallinan is the Founder and Managing Director of property construction and development group BPM Corp, and owner of a global suit venture, The Cloakroom. With a strong emphasis on artisanal and aspirational design, Jonathan makes a point in this interview that BPM is less about being high-end and more about being affordable while maintaining quality and luxury. While Jonathan has created incredible success in the growth of BPM Corp, a really poignant part of this interview was our discussion about how his measure of success has changed. Life is less about the focus on financials, and more about the simpler things in life like human connection and life experience. This was a short but sweet interview, due to the nature of how busy Jonathan is - but indeed there are lessons here for everyone. In this episode we covered: * Early career & inspiration * The importance of good design * Focusing on the downsizer * Shrinking BPM * Making great design accessible * Why detail and process matters, and * Measuring success

Marty Fox is the Founder and Owner of WHITEFOX Real Estate, Marketing & Productions. He’s a loving family man and an exceptional deal closer noted for many high profile listings. The interview with Marty was quite timely for me. In the past few weeks, I’ve been assessing what type of man I want to be in my life and in the space of a few weeks, Marty’s interview amongst two others really helped me refine what that means. For years, and no genuine reason at all, I had this multi-billionaire archetype in my head. But Marty’s smart approach to life that prioritises health and family first, then business - has made me realise that you can still have an exceptional life and a successful business, without needing to forfeit what matters most. He’s a role model that a lot of young men look up to, and a unique operator in the fascinating industry that is high-end real estate. In this episode we covered: * The concept of “winning the day” * How you can’t pour from an empty cup * First ever auction and big wins * Why nervous feelings are worth it * Starting the WHITEFOX brand * The marketing language WHITEFOX uses, and * Selling as a skill

Zara McDonald and Michelle Andrews are journalists, Co-Hosts of the Shameless Podcast, and Co-Founders of Shameless Media. What I like about these two media entrepreneurs is their ability to identify what works editorially in an overlooked market. The pushback they received from one of the largest digital-first, female media brands, would have taken some fortitude to withstand. But the principled approach to what they believed would work, and that there was a need for a pop-culture podcast for “smart women who love dumb stuff”, birthed a rational community of women and a business that neither Zara or Michelle probably thought was possible. One year and three months later, they lead a growing community, and have just announced their first branded podcast with Bumble Australia, titled Love etc. I’m fascinated to see what the next few years hold for these two. In this episode we covered: * How much they owe to The Daily Mail * The death of the celebrity profile * The rise of Shameless * Shameless Media & monetisation * Creator burnout and mental health * Confidence and imposter syndrome * Election results and diversity of opinions

William Summers is an Independent Researcher, Journalist and Blogger who specialises in politics, public policy and Freedom of Information. He’s written for the likes of the ABC, Daily Telegraph and Crikey. William was the first person to uncover Barnaby Joyce’s dual citizenship, and kickstarted the Victorian Parliament expenses scandal in 2017. Freedom of Information is a crucial component to Free Speech & the norms of our democracy. No matter your political persuasion, the general public should always encourage the work of people like William, particularly as Executive Branches of government increasing call for further benefits or power. In this episode we covered: * The importance of a republic & Pro monarchy arguments * The ultimate political system * Australian vs UK politics * Freedom of Information & Free speech * Nepotism & corruption in Australian politics * The current state of media

Tommy Jackett and Josh Janssen are the Co-Hosts of The Daily Talk Show podcast, Co-Founders of Big Media Company, adoptive fathers to Mr 97 & 3D-Dyl, and chieftains of the Gronk squad. These two gents have managed to consistently pump out a daily podcast show since January 16th 2018 - a monumental feat in my opinion. The clear analysis that there was a gap for a daily show, has seen them interview idols like Seth Godin, create an incredible community of fellow “gronks”, and become a weekly staple in many people’s lives. If you’re a Melbourne podcast aficionado, you’ve probably heard of them - if you haven’t, then you definitely should check them out. In this episode we covered: * How The Daily Talk show has impacted their lives * What Mr 97 & 3D-Dyl have taught them * Self-development and learning * How they publish every single day * Meeting Matt D’Avella & Seth Godin * Clocking off and Health Anxiety

Professor Robin Batterham AO is a Chemical Engineer, Former Chief Scientist of Australia (1999-2006), Former Chief Technologist at Rio Tinto, Kernot Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at Melbourne University, and Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) amongst many other titles. Robin is one of the clearest thinkers I’ve ever met on the podcast. He embodies the mindset of brilliant scientists before him, and particularly my favourite in Richard Feynman - where he shows not only technical nous but a clear ability to explain some of the most complex topics in the easiest ways. In this episode we covered: * Soil carbon and climate change * Regenerative farming * The politicisation of climate policy * Energy policy & Nuclear energy * Getting excited about engineering * Teamwork for innovation * Ideas vs Execution

Laura Henshaw is the Co-Founder of powerful fitness and health brand Keep it Cleaner. Laura is also currently Podcast Co-Host of KIC POD, Co-Author of A Girl's Guide to Kicking Goals, and on top of all of that, she’s studying a Law degree. She also so happens to be the fiancée to last week’s guest Dalton Graham. What I like about Laura is her first principles approach to product development and how that has permeated into the Keep It Cleaner business. What Laura and her Co-Founder Steph Smith have built is astonishing. In under 18 months, Keep It Cleaner has built an app, a grocery line stocked across the country and hired a team of up to 10+ staff. Even more astonishing, is the cult following they have garnered and continued to grow in what is now a health and fitness revolution. These two “kingmakers” to me are like The Rock and Kevin Hart of young female inspiration in Australia. They’ve been overlooked by the tech and business industry, simply because they fit within the lifestyle and influence demographic. Watch out for what Laura gets up to in the next few years, I’m sure it will be huge. In this episode we covered: * Growing up and life as a teen * Meeting and admiring Steph Smith * Building her audience * Keep It Cleaner the business

Dalton Graham is the Co-Founder of media agency Bullfrog Media, lifestyle brand The Tailored Man and fiancé to Keep It Cleaner’s, Laura Henshaw. What I like about Dalton is his penchant for identifying quality in product, unlike the trend of obsessing over high fashion labels. His creation of a men’s social-first lifestyle brand showcases an analytical media mind for building an audience, which is something he’s applied in his second business Bullfrog Media. This was a fantastic discussion with one of Australia’s most influential men in fashion and advertising, that was so deep that we ended up going on for another hour post-interview. We touched on many topics including: * Quality menswear brands * The Tailored Man * The Death of the Suit * Why it’s harder to say no * Starting Bullfrog Media * Dealing with internet trolls & switching off * Learning from Laura & Steph of Keep It Cleaner

Josh Wade and Sam Lindell are Directors of Verve Network, a diversified talent agency focused on pushing the boundaries of entertainment. Most of the audience will know Josh from his work as a comedian, but not too many will know of his foray into the world of managing talent. In under two years, Verve has made a name for itself as a serious player in a stale industry. This was a short but nonetheless interesting chat which covered: * How Josh and Sam met * How Verve started * Explaining what they do * Verve Pictures * Learning from Michael Ovitz and Scooter Braun * What the future looks like

Daniel Kilov is an Australian Memory Athlete, Speaker, Writer and a Philosophy PhD student at The Australian National University (ANU). Daniel is capable of memorising a shuffled deck of cards in less than two minutes, over 100 random digits in five minutes and placed second at the Australian Memory Championships in 2011. When I learnt about Daniel and his mentor Tansel Ali - through the best-selling book Deep Work by Cal Newport - I knew I had to get him on the podcast. The use of memory is probably one of the fundamental tools we have as humans, aside from communication through language. Yet we are in an age where we’re handballing a lot of former memory tasks to our smart devices - foregoing the classic techniques of mnemonics is becoming all too common. As Cal Newport says in his book, the “Art of Memory” is incredibly important to becoming a “Deep Worker” who can not only increase performance but also your attention through the process. This was an insightful episode where we covered: * Improving memory with ADHD * Memory, mindfulness & philosophy * Thought experiments * What the Art of Memory is * How to start applying memory techniques * Memory and brain health * Being a memory athlete * Resources for learning

This week's episode is a special one for the 2019 Melbourne International Comedy Festival, where we sat down to talk shit about the comedy business with some of our favourite comics. In an ode to Talking Funny, we're coining it Talking Shit. Our guests this week included Neel Kolhatkar, Isaac Butterfield, and Jordan Shanks (aka Friendlyjordies). Neel Kolhatkar is a Comedian, Stand-up Comic, Content Creator and Actor with a powerful audience built from his humble beginnings on YouTube. You’ll also find him acting on network TV shows including Channel 10’s Street Smart and ABC’s Virgin Bush. Isaac “The Buttsmarn” Butterfield is a Comedian, Stand-up Comic and Content Creator known for dissecting the status quo of culture through his satirical commentary on YouTube. Jordan “Friendlyjordies” Shanks is a Comedian, Stand-up Comic and Content Creator of Australian YouTube prominence, for his exceptional commentary on Australian culture and politics. He also hosts the Friendlyjordies Podcast. There are countless gems in this 2-hour episode including: * Each comic's individual rise * Internet vs mainstream comedians * Differences in each others style * The process of a comedian * Outrage, and strangest complaints * Bombing on stage * Fast food of choice * Shitty first jobs

Oliver Kidd (@OliverKidd) is the Founder & CEO of up-and-coming Australian neobank, Archa. Archa, like a lot of new “challenger banks” are a new form of digital banking, aiming to disrupt the banking sector through better customer service and product development. The introduction to neobanking is something I’ve wanted to cover for quite a long time, particularly after reading a new white paper on the state of banking globally. For years, we’ve had the slow delivery of FinTech services through tech unicorns like Stripe, Robinhood, TransferWise, Wealthfront, Raiz and Coinbase to just name a few. The goal of a neobank is to bundle most of these individual services, including deposits, in an effort to disrupt the entrenched business model of the Big4 banks. The recent Royal Commission points to why this should be a priority for both consumers and regulators here in Australia. This was a great episode where we covered: * A love of milkshakes * What are Neobanks? * Old banking vs new challengers * The importance of credit * Millennial mortgages * Why the UK is a Neobanking leader

Courtney Carthy is the Founder of the Inflatable Regatta, and Nearly Media, a podcast network that works with brands. A former journalist who’s worked at The ABC, Triple J and SYN - Courtney has a natural penchant for the audio format, with his podcast work at The ABC leading to what we know as Nearly Media today. Nearly Media is one of the clear leaders in the new and emerging space of podcasts in Australia. Like our former guest Claire Tonti (CEO, Planet Broadcasting), I really wanted the opportunity to pick Courtney’s brain, understanding where he believes the industry will be going and what makes a brilliant podcast. This was a great episode, where we covered: * The Inflatable Regatta * Why he got into media * Nearly Media * The iTunes algorithm * Strategy for 2019 and beyond * The potential of branded podcasts * Commonalities in good content * How to market podcasts

Gerry Sakkas is the CEO of PlaySide Studios, the largest app and games company in Australia. This Big Friendly Giant, with his fear of sharks and flying, is running one of the most fascinating bootstrapped companies in Australia. In the past, I’ve spoken about how transformative not just gaming but also AR will be to the way we consume media and entertainment in the next two to three years. We see examples in everyday life from Fortnite to Pokemon Go, with a pair of Apple Glasses expected very soon. I believe Playside Studios is in the greatest position to take hold of this change in computing. Gerry’s humble attitude and work ethic are at odds with a tech industry always looking for superstars to dish out ‘hustle porn’. In Gerry, you won't find a promoter, but an individual who leads by example - backed up by his partner in crime, Suzie. This was a great episode where we covered: * Principles, work ethic & family * Early years of business & how he got into gaming * The influence of his wife Suzie Sakkas * PlaySide Studios & its business model * How AR, AR glasses & Apple will change computing * Keep It Cleaner, and the Banta app * Lessons learned from marketing genius’ Steph Claire Smith & Laura Henshaw

Nic Hodges is the Founder of Blonde3 and former Head of Innovation for media brands such as Foxtel, NewsCorp and MediaCom. Noted for his tagline “nostalgic for the future”, Nic has also been dubbed a polymath by a few former guests - but particularly his understanding of the mechanics in media is what makes him unique. Nic sits at a unique intersection of media & technology - a skillset to better help us understand the happenings in the background of social media. This was a fairly meaty episode covering: * Batmania vs Melbourne * The State of Media * Propaganda & disinformation * WhatsApp lynchings and the impact of Twitter * Paedophilia on Youtube and TikTok * Responsibility, accountability and free speech * Common vs contested knowledge * inkl and subscription services

Tristan Rose (@tristanrose.com.au) is the Founder of a Veteran-focused Yoga and Meditation service Blind Tiger Yoga, and a former soldier in The Royal Australian Regiment. For a long time, I’ve wanted to interview a former Veteran to get a better grasp of how this community perceives itself amongst the general civilian population. War and violence are at times, necessary, and so I wanted to understand how they view that necessity. For quite some time I would continually pitch former and current special forces operators only to have repeated “no’s” come back. After interviewing Tristan, I started to understand why. The way we treat Veterans in Australia, as a general population, is strange. Whether it’s sticking our head in the sand about suicide post-discharge (through masking statistics), making it hard for veterans to make medical claims, or going along with a culture that doesn’t allow us to celebrate the commitment these individuals make post-career. I realised that during the research process, and indeed the interview, how important Tristan’s work is. Blind Tiger Yoga - a team focused on complementing health management for Veterans and First Responders - could be the connective tissue that links a multitude of modalities in a Veteran’s life, giving it a wholeness and meaning in a system that has washed people away. This was an eye-opening conversation, that I thank Tristan for allowing me to be a part of, including: * Teaching Yoga & Meditation to Veterans * Tristan’s life-changing Yoga moment * Compartmentalising as a soldier * Australia vs U.S Veteran treatment * Being a Veteran in Australia * Veteran mental health & suicide * What Blind Tiger Yoga does

Greg Sanderson (@GregSanderson) is a Cocktail Bartender, Co-Founder & National Operations Manager of the Speakeasy Group, and easily one of Australia’s most prominent bar operators. The Speakeasy Group owns a range of stunning venues in Melbourne and Sydney including Eau de Vie, Mjøllner, Nick & Nora’s, and Boilermaker House. Greg has indirectly had a major impact on so many people in the hospitality industry, from waiters to bartenders to chefs - we all respect the level he holds himself accountable to, making us want to be better. I remember first meeting Greg at a Diageo training event way back in my hospitality days, and you could clearly see that he was a man that had an unbridled seriousness for creating amazing experiences. Whether it’s innovating through crowdfunding raises, or opening iconic institutions like Eau de Vie - Greg and his business partner Sven continue to excite us all. A great episode, where we discussed: * The politics of Lemon, Lime & Bitters * Falling in love with Hospitality * Melbourne’s passion for cocktails * How to mix the perfect bartender * The Speakeasy Group & its venues * Managing stress in the industry * What hasn’t changed * Trends he’d like to see go away

Claire Tonti (@clairetonti) is the CEO of Planet Broadcasting, Host of Just Make The Thing podcast, and sometimes known as Mrs Sunday Movies. The Planet Broadcasting business was one of the first true bootstrapped podcast networks in Australia. Early on, Claire was able to scale out the work she was doing for her co-founders James and Nick (through Mr Sunday Movies & The Weekly Planet), by bringing on a stable of notable local podcasters such as Wil Anderson and Charlie Clausen. The inspiration from American brands like Earwolf is clear, and one of the reasons why I wanted to pick her brain. The Planet Broadcasting team are the locals we look up to, and in my opinion, the indie leaders in this game here in Australia. A great episode covering many aspects of the business, including: * Being a wedding singer * How she met Mr Sunday Movies * Claire’s influential father * Deciding when to take the leap * Planet Broadcasting & its business model * Tips for starting a podcast

Dr Kyle Berean is the Chief Technology Officer of Atmo Biosciences, Research Fellow at RMIT University, and fellow IBS Sufferer. Many of you - listeners and readers - may already know about my running IBS issues. A gut disorder that I’d like to put to bed for good. The constant anxiety, nausea and pain I’ve suffered from since my early twenties is still unresolved, simply down to the fact that doctors and researchers don’t truly understand what’s going on inside the mysterious gastrointestinal tract. This revolutionary piece of science - in the form of an electronic pill - is so transformative that Kyle, his research colleagues at RMIT, and Atmo Biosciences, could potentially change my and many other lives forever (permitting they get through all the necessary regulatory hoops). I thought it was my civic duty to get Kyle on the podcast, to make gut sufferers out there aware of the work that Kyle and the team at Atmo does, so we can continue to encourage this ground-breaking research in Australia. This was an information-filled chat, where we covered: * IBS, Giardia and Gastro * Going from oil to audio to nanomaterials * Why the gut & breath tests are misunderstood * How the Atmos gut capsule will transform this area * Getting the regulator tick of approval * Atmo’s Direct to consumer approach

Gail Pascoe is a Writer, Presenter and Facilitator in the field of donor conception & IVF. Her knowledge and experience as an individual who conceived a daughter with donor sperm that has conceived over 100 siblings, is truly fascinating. The field of donor conception has greatly expanded in the last decade, while a greater percentage of the population is seeking this option as a means of starting a family. A recent Four Corner documentary piqued my interest in the space and it was the fortuitous timing that an introduction from a former guest, Eileen Orsmby, came via email. Gail’s nous in many of the moral questions in this space allows us to consider what the future of conception and childbearing may hold. This was an insightful discussion, where we covered: * Why Gail chose donor conception * The donor & IVF process * Learning from pregnancy * Sperm banks and morality * Connecting with your donor * Bizarre donor stories

Elliot Loney is an Actor, Comedian, Creator of The Prestigious 9A’s and the funny man of the World Tour Tennis scene. Elliot is undoubtedly one of the most talented comedy actors in the group of Australian internet comedians. Whether it’s his incredibly accurate impersonation of stars like Rafael Nadal, discovering the Metro wasteland as Bear Grylls, or creating a unique world with his Prestigious 9A’s cartoon - Elliot will have you cackling with laughter. This is a great discussion where we cover: * In-jokes with Neel Kolhatkar * Getting into stripping * Tennis career and finding comedy * Impersonations * Principles learnt from tennis career * The Elliot Loney brand & business model * Animation & The Prestigious 9A’s

Sebastian Peart and Mark Nicholson are co-creators of the satirical cartoon brand Stepmates. Along with composer and sound/engineer Peter Corrigan, these champions of low-brow “bottom of the barrel” humour are creating hilariously animated satire. What I love about the Stepmates boys is that like comedians such as Friendlyjordies, they’re able to cut through the bullshit, reducing an, oftentimes, critically overthought topic to a key statement or point. In a world where being politically moderate is somehow radical, these two gentlemen are able to sound out what we’re all really thinking, with a brilliantly simple animation. Giving a shining light to a world that is slowly eating itself due to poor political discourse. This was an incredibly funny episode where we covered: * Friendlyjordies & breaking down bullshit * No Nut November & productivity * What they wanted to be growing up * The Stepmates business, animation & creative process * Life-changing moments, viral videos * The “Jim’s Mowing” drama * Being politically centrist

Luke Kidgell is a Stand-up Comic, YouTuber, Co-Host of Luke & Lewis on Fox101.9, Host of the Memoirs of a White Guy Podcast and probably one of the smartest Meme Connoisseur’s in Australia. This Tambourine Master is probably the most talented comedian I know when it comes to propagating an idea across culture. From the viral “You don’t own me” meme to his newest attack on Space Pineapple Zooper Dooper’s, Luke has a unique talent in knowing how to successfully push an idea across the zeitgeist. While he thinks his comedy is “just shit memes” and a sprinkle of talent, I believe - like his radio co-host Lewis - he is by far one of the hardest working comics in the game. This guy only started creating comedy around 18 years of age, much later than any other comic I’ve interviewed before. Add in his tireless work ethic to that unique talent and you have a comedian that is uniquely placed to spread brilliant memes in our lives.

Lewis Spears is a Stand-up Comic, YouTuber, Co-Host of Luke & Lewis on Fox101.9, Host of Spearhead Sundays and an all-around internet shit stirrer. If I was to pick just one comic from the bunch of up & coming internet comedians, Lewis would most typify that mischievous trickster, court jester style archetype. First known for his Facebeef escapades, Lewis has regularly proven the media is all too willing to publish first, and embarrassingly, fact check later. This contempt for authority that Lewis holds, has helped us all sit back and maybe think deeper about the information we’re often receiving, forcing you to take ownership of the sources you hold in high regard. To me, he’s one of the hardest working personalities in the business, waking early, working like a beast, then doing it all over again - six days a week. His mateship with fellow comic Luke is clearly a major driver in both of their success. Whether it’s pushing each other to be better, or joining to create media brands like the Luke & Lewis show. This was really confirmed for me, when I saw his most recent piece of satire “What Firing A Comedian For Old Jokes Is Like” .

It's been two years since our debut episode - so at Episode 100 we again decided to do a year in review. This is our second attempt, which is somewhat more casual, and allows us to reflect or pause on recent topics, key changes in the business and what the next year holds. For me, it’s incredibly important as a long-form content creator that we take time to reflect each year, giving us a mini-break from the weekly publishing cycle. While also communicating about what’s happening behind the scenes. We have two guests this week, with my trusty companion Lauren Lopatko ( @laurenloko ) joining once again. She is Neuralle Media’s Co-Founder, the Uncommon podcast producer, and additionally my fiancée. Our second guest is Oliver Phisher (@OPhisher), our dear friend who is an author and previous guest in Episode 46. A lot has changed for us in the last 12 months, whether it’s new jobs, a new home, new clients or prospective podcast guests. Thank you for your continued support and listenership, when we hear from you directly it truly means a lot, knowing that behind that download number is a real person. The next year will have some exciting upgrades to how we produce content for you.

Garry Weaven is the former Chairman & Founder of IFM Investors, former Chairman of Industry Super, and has served as Board Member or Executive for multiple organisations including ME Bank, the New Daily, Pacific Hydro & the ACTU. He’s also known as Australia’s “Godfather of Industry Super”, which is difficult to tell whether it’s a compliment or not. Bernard Wheelahan was kind enough to introduce me to Garry when I asked who he’d recommend as a guest. He immediately called me to talk about Garry and his “pugnacious attitude” being a brilliant fit, knowing that we’d get along. What I like about Garry is his disagreeable attitude. It makes me realise that my own nature of cutting through corporate crap - and being “pugnacious” as Bernard calls it - is a useful trait to hold in life. He has the unique perspective sitting between both Labor (as a former Unionist) and Capital (as a passionate Economist and Fund Manager). The size of the industry super movement and Fund Managers like IFM Investors is incredible considering that the industry only really kicked off in the mid-nineties. A testament to a career and life well spent.

Dr Hon Weng Chong is the CEO of CCLabs.ai, Co-Founder of CliniCloud, and Research Fellow at the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute. When I originally set out to create Neuralle, I had these grand ideas of creating this new movement of self-improvement backed by Neuroscience and Behavioural Psychology. Hence, the name Neuralle is really just “neural” in Danish (and Italian!). So when my friend Zhoe introduced me to Hon, I immediately booked him in, so I could get the opportunity to give you a run-through of this new and exciting area of Neural Computing. Now I don’t know about you, but when I was a kid, I had this super intelligent yet uniquely outgoing friend. The type of person that would humbly showcase their intelligence with some domination of a game, or solving of a complex schoolyard problem, yet carry on jumping bike ramps at the very next moment. To me, Hon is that type of guy. The type of guy that convinces his top-tier private school to change its entire IT operating infrastructure. The type of guy that decides to casually pivot into Neural Computing, and can raise capital on Tinder. What Hon is building with CCLabs is incredibly exciting, the type of machine that can help exponentially grow experimentation in the field of Neuroscience and Neural Computing. A Neuroscience wet-lab as a service, literally Amazon Web Services for Neuroscience.

Andrew Lauterstein is a retired Australian swimmer, three-time Olympic medallist, owner of the New Wave Swim School and Director of Engine Swim. Andrew is the perfect match of both talent and hard work. Clearly aware that he holds a nous for sport & high-performance, he rarely lets that get in the way of a focused growth mindset. When I spoke with his sister, it was interesting that she highlighted his willingness to give even mere mortals like myself the time in his busy schedule - when really he doesn’t have to. I remember Andrew very well from my early years at the Senior School of Brighton Grammar. Lauto, as he was affectionately known, was somewhat of a god for us Year 9 kids - but surprisingly one of the friendliest people you’d come across. That leadership and willingness to care about people is what his sister spoke about, and was the attribute that always made me look up to him, and how to carry yourself as a man.

Dan Monheit is the Co-Founder and Director of Strategy at creative agency Hardhat, Co-Host of the Bad Decisions Podcast, MC of lecture series Real Big Things and a self-confessed sneakerhead. As I’ve said in our previous episode, Dan truly embodies the archetype that is “Chutzpah”- combine that with his need for incessant learning on cognition and you have one impressive media brain. From small beginnings lecturing at Monash University, to jumping straight into his own agency, Dan is full of that entrepreneurial spirit we see common amongst our guests. Couple that with running a podcast, a series of lectures with a fascinating premise and running the strategy of HardHat - you have an immovable force in a rapidly changing industry.

Mat Pember is the Founder of The Little Veggie Patch Co, Author of numerous books including ‘Grow. Food. Anywhere’, self declared Nonna’s boy and long time dreamer of a retirement plot in Tasmania. The Little Veggie Patch Co is a stalwart in the world of edible gardening here in Australia, along with the likes of Stephanie Alexander of Kitchen Garden. If you’ve had any real passion for growing your own food in the last decade, you’ve no doubt heard of Mat and the Little Veggie Patch Co. My own memories of LVP Co was wandering through the nursery as a teen, looking at the amazing selection of garden items, or just walking by the Melbourne CBD Pop Up Patch when I moved into the city. Mat’s work always gives me this need to daydream about a greener life, which the product range of LVP Co has done so well for many of us crammed into apartments these days.

Josh Szeps is a TV and Radio Broadcaster, Political Satirist, Podcast Host of #WeThePeople LIVE, and Host of the ABC Radio National show, The People Vs. He also strangely finds dolphins smug, and according to Twitter Trolls, he is both an alt-right propagandist and Social Justice Warrior at the very same time. From being the voice behind the 2000 Sydney Olympics’ mascot Olly the Kookaburra, becoming a founding host for HuffPost LIVE, and to listening to him on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast; what I’ve loved about learning from and listening to Josh, is his ability to condense an idea - take all of his skills from comedy to broadcasting - and articulate it in a way that the audience can completely understand or relate to. He said it himself in our interview, that one of the greatest lessons he’s learnt is to listen. In his words: “Listen when the other person’s talking. It’s a really hard thing to do when you’re in the thick of it. Actually listen to what they’re saying and listen for opportunities to relate to them”. I think that’s undoubtedly his greatest attribute and a tool that everyone should learn in our current media climate.

Isaac “The Buttsmarn” Butterfield is a Comedian and YouTuber known for dissecting the culture through his satirical critiques of politics and ideology, with a twang of Aussie humour injected for comic relief. Isaac’s tango with The Project - whether it be offending Kiwi’s or defying the assumption that “All Men Are EVIL”, added rocket fuel to his already growing brand of no holds barred style of comedy. His YouTube videos are a brilliant source of fair and reasonable analysis, that not many in the media or those in the culture wars are willing to partake in, no matter their political leaning. Much like other comedians, we’ve interviewed including the likes of Neel Kolhatkar, Josh Wade, Shayne Hunter and Friendlyjordies; Isaac is an important part of what we like to call the “Bullshit Counsel”. A group of individuals with varying political leanings, unique ideas and a strong dose of scepticism to help you break down the noise.

Rupert Hackett is the CEO of Bitcoin.com.au, Director at the Australia Digital Commerce Association, while also an Advisor to Apollo Capital and Caleb & Brown. Rupert is probably one of the most active industry leaders for digital assets in Australia. Like the meteoric rise of digital currencies itself, Rupert has leapt forward in his leadership across the industry in multiple positions and opinions, on topics focused around industry governance, services and technical developments. The reality is that digital currencies are no longer an idea, the status quo of your slow as a snail financial services is largely coming to an end. Leaders like Rupert in the FinTech space, whether it be crypto or other are gradually creeping forward. Money is the societal lubricant that keeps us all so willing to cooperate with complete and utter strangers. Therefore, it’s your duty to stay up to date and understand the principles and ideas of people like Rupert - so you can also understand how cryptocurrency is reinventing trust.

Mark Watt AM is the Co-Founder & Director of Development at Whitelion. With a wealth of experience across not-for-profit organisations for well over 20 years, he’s also a sitting Board Member of The First Step Program, Surrender Australia, and St Kilda Gatehouse. Mark’s work has been recognised with numerous awards, including a Membership in the Order of Australia (AM). Whitelion is a not-for-profit that provides transition services to young people exiting the justice system. Working with these high-risk youth showed Whitelion that the primary risk factors for youth offending were being placed in the Out-of-Home Care system and being homeless, leading to a broadening of services or programs to address these key factors. My attention was brought to Mark’s work back in 2014 when joining IBISWorld and learning that the founder Phil Ruthven was a board member of Whitelion. Each year we would take clients to the annual AFL Finals Series Luncheon, learn about the stories of high-risk youth, and what Whitelion had done for them. The events were so impactful that two of my former clients ended up joining the mentorship program at Whitelion. The work that organisations like Whitelion do is admirable and incredibly important for certain groups of the population, a true testament to the character of people like Mark.

Jack “chendo” Chen is a product engineer and co-founder of Assembly Four. Assembly Four makes products and services to empower sex workers throughout the world, committing a portion of profits to help those sex workers in need. Assembly Four rocketed to the forefront of the industry with the launch of Switter as legislation known as FOSTA/SESTA effectively banned sex workers safely engaging clients online. Switter was the beginning of Assembly Four’s modern tech disruption to an industry that globally is worth US$186b and historically is not too tech savvy. The launch of further services in Tryst (for Advertising) & Honey Notes (a CRM), underscores Assembly Four’s commitment to the industry. Our chat with Jack gave us the perfect opportunity to dig deeper on the tech side of Assembly Four (including product development), while also delving into what it takes to become a true stack developer.

Olivia Orchowski is the head coach of Lean Lab, private coach, member of the Instagram Coaching Mafia and known widely as “The Booty Builder”. Interestingly, Olivia and I are also old schoolmates from our early years, providing some great nostalgia on my part. Olivia’s nous across major fitness and nutrition principles is quite apparent as you get to know her, not too dissimilar to the first principles approach being led by the “Instagram Coach Mafia”. In the same vein of former guest Eugene Teo (episode 1), her knowledge across a vast array of topics is stunning - and continually growing. Her transformation from high fashion model to “booty builder” was born out of her own passion for health, spurred on by her mental frustrations with physique.

Neel Kolhatkar is a comedian, content creator, presenter and actor with a powerful audience built from his humble beginnings on his YouTube channel, that now has over 57M views. Well-known for satirical clips such as “Australia in 2 Minutes”, and “Modern Educayshun”, Neel has now expanded into network TV series Virgin Bush (ABC), StreetSmart (Channel 10), as well as creating new characters like “Charles D” which he features regularly, now on a dedicated Instagram account. Neel is an incredibly intelligent comedy creator with an innate ability to pare back culture and society across a whole slew of different mediums. He’s the first to admit that virality was what catapulted him into the ether of Australia’s young comedy class, but I believe his incredible knowledge of science, society, new media, and politics is what sets him apart. Society is a whole lot better for people like him because it allows us to not take life so seriously.

Philip Dalidakis MP is the Victorian State Minister for Trade & Investment, Innovation & the Digital Economy, and Small Business. In addition, he is also MP for the Southern Metro area and a Cabinet member of the Victorian Andrews Government. I’ve said numerous times in the past that it’s important to continually engage political leaders, so we can understand their ambition and goals in representing us. Phil has always been generous with his time and articulate in his ideas. You don’t need to agree with him politically to respect the man for what he does - in an age when politicians aren’t trusted widely.

Dr Karl Kruszelnicki AM is a doctor, author, entertainer, shirt aficionado and for a lot of people in Gen X to Z, the man who introduced them to the wonderful world of science. In his own words, Karl is an answer looking for a question and you can feel that immense desire to solve your science problems through his passion. In addition to all of the above, Karl has also been awarded the Member of the Order of Australia Award in the 2006 Australia Day Honours list. It was surreal interviewing Karl, having grown up listening to him on Triple J as a young teen and into my early 20’s - his weekly podcast now a staple of my week. Karl is as affable in real life as he is through media. I could feel the passion that he displays in his work as we walked around the Sofitel talking about why certain rooms (and their angles) were his favourite. The ability to understand the world around us increases with importance as technology becomes a greater element of our lives. Dr Karl is the pinnacle of what it means to be a communicator, or science entertainer as he puts it, to an ever interested public.

Marco Ryan or Marc-O-Matic as he’s commonly known, is a multi-disciplinary artist, animator, director, storyteller and technologist. His unique work utilises both augmented and virtual reality to tell beautiful stories, that literally jump out from the page. Storytelling is one of the oldest skills known to mankind, and probably one of the most important to our survival as a species. The fact that we can make things up, like the idea of a company or that dragons might exist, allows us to convey information or lessons that give life meaning. Storytellers like Marco use these new forms of technology, continue the spellbinding experience of learning through stories and keeps the survival of our species going. I strongly suggest you check out Marco’s work to get a true grasp of how it looks.

Peter Dickson is an award-winning documentary filmmaker and founder of Dickson Films. With over 16 years experience, Peter is constantly sought-after to create long-lasting sports documentaries for organisations like the AFL, Cricket Australia and national broadcasters. Peter has proven over a long period of time to be (in my opinion), one of Australia’s greatest storytellers. His compelling and emotionally gripping documentaries leave an immense impact, which in the words of Peter himself, “stand the test of time”. The fact that I, as a St Kilda FC supporter, have watched Peter’s film The Final Draw over 5 times, is a testament to the emotion and passion he can draw from a story.

Adam Ni is a researcher of geopolitics focusing on China. He is also a Visiting Fellow at the Strategic & Defence Studies Centre, and Coral Bell School of Asia Pacific Affairs at The Australian National University. His main areas of interest include China’s international relations, strategy and security issues. Adam has extensive experience working on China-related issues, including in academia, government and the private sector. He is a frequent commentator on geopolitical and China-related issues for Australian and international media. The rise of China has come to the fore in many Australian minds, and a hot topic with recent developments in the South China Sea. Adam appeared on our screens in an interview for 60 Minutes discussing the recent play by China to create a naval base in Vanuatu. Adam holds a fascinating background and curious insight into one of the most important topics for the future of Australia, our place in Asia.

Assembly Four makes products and services to empower sex workers throughout the world, committing a portion of profits to help those sex workers in need. The launch of further services in Tryst (for Advertising) & Honey Notes (a CRM), underscores Assembly Four’s commitment to the industry. Interviewing Lola was the perfect opportunity to discuss intimacy and relationships, with an individual who knows what’s crucial to those two aspects of our life - communication. Lola’s work is grounded in privacy and the liberty of an individual, a fascinating area of technology where we’ll go into further detail with her co-founder Jack in a future episode. This episode is definitely not suitable for work (NSFW).

Tammi Jonas is the co-founder of Jonai Farms, President of the Australian Food Sovereignty Alliance, an ethicurean farmer, and mindful meatsmith. Jonai Farms is a pastured fed farm which was the first in Australia to crowdfund development of its infrastructure and a leader in community-supported agriculture. From a very young age, I idolised the idea of having my own place to produce homegrown food. When an old friend purchased a farm recently in Gippsland, my interest was piqued again. Keeping the “pigness of the pig” is the first line in Tammi’s list of principles, inspired by one of my favourite farmers, Joel Salatin. The commonality amongst both Tammi and Joel is what we call Holistic Farm Management. A systems thinking approach to farming that minimises the effects on the local environment, ensures the “pigness of the pig” and provides healthy food or animals for us to eat. The bedrock that supports this is a distribution model called Community Supported Agriculture, a subscription-based form of distribution that caps the horrible downside that farmers can experience. Many thanks to Jackson O’Malley for the recommendation to Tammi’s work.

Holly Ransom is the CEO of Emergent, a Keynote speaker, Port Adelaide FC Director, the 2014 G20 Youth Chair, a fan of avocado with Vegemite and the youngest person to be named in Australia’s “100 Most Influential Women”. She has been featured on ABC’s Q&A, Channel 7 News & Channel 10’s The Project for her commentary on intergenerational economic and social issues. Holly specialises in disruptive strategy and building the capacity of leaders for change, which has seen her work with the likes of Microsoft, Virgin, INPEX, Europcar, KPMG, & the AIS, as well as government. She’s an experienced non-executive director who has shown her capacity to lead across many organisations - including when the Australian Prime Minister appointed Holly to Chair the G20 Youth Summit. Her corporate career has involved working as Chief of Staff to NAB Wealth CEO Andrew Hagger and for Rio Tinto CEO Sam Walsh, with Sam imparting an immense sense of what real leadership is. Holly represents what happens when you maximise the opportunities given to you in life and that when you ask for more responsibility, how meaningful life can be. She’s so industrious to the point you almost think she must be carrying a “Time-Turner”, the time-travelling device used by Hermione in Harry Potter. But she’s also aware that life requires balance, having dealt with the overwhelm of responsibility and depression. That’s an incredible message for anyone to hear. Many thanks to Michelle Bourke for the introduction.

Sarah Moran is the Co-founder and CEO of Girl Geek Academy, while also being NAB’s Girl Geek in Residence. Girl Geek Academy is behind Australia’s first all-female hackathon #SheHacks; the first all-female makerfest #SheMakes; the first hackathon for young girls #MissMakesCode; and the career development event for women in gaming #SheMakesGames. Sarah has a mission to encourage 1 million women to get into tech and launch their own startups by 2025, a lofty challenge over the next 7 years. When I was at high school, I remember that I was constantly pigeonholed and told that certain knowledge bases (like maths & science) where outside of my potential. The entire point of this podcast was to build my worldly wisdom (as Charlie Munger calls it), bringing you along the way and reinforcing that if you have the right attitude - most forms of learning are quite achievable. Sarah’s work identifies that so long as you have the personality and aptitude to match, hacking and hustling are within your grasp. New forms of education across large groups of people are going to be incredibly important in bridging the knowledge base as coding becomes the new blue collar job over the next decade. You get a sense from this discussion why Sarah decided to focus in particular on women, and why that’s her north star.

Manoj Dias is a meditation teacher, speaker and co-founder of A-Space, Australia’s first multidisciplinary meditation studio. He’s been featured across multiple sources of media including Channel 9, Postcards, Broadsheet, and Vice Media. Manoj has worked with high performing teams and individuals on a range of topics including brands you may know like Lululemon, Melbourne Storm, BHP, and Mercedes Benz. As a spiritual teacher, he’s learnt from many of the greats including Sharon Salzberg and Jack Kornfield. I’m definitely a Type A individual. Industrious and hard working to the point of neuroticism - which is not a healthy long term pursuit in this modern world. It’s teachers like Manoj, that show me the way to contentment is not necessarily self-management, but self-awareness. You may not be as manic as me, but I’m absolutely sure that there will be principles to learn and benefit from with an introduction to meditation. I’ve since visited A-Space after interviewing Manoj. I would strongly recommend our listeners or visitors in Melbourne to go check it out for as little as $20 for a drop-in lesson.

Anthony “Decryption” Agius is a tech reporter, entrepreneur, founder of multiple media brands including The Sizzle, MacTalk, One More Thing and Reckoner. He’s contributed to Delimiter, Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, Macworld Australia, PC and Tech Authority - with Reckoner winning the 2014 Optus IT Journalism award for best independent media. You may remember Anthony as the guy who hacked a big banks corporate flyer program, scored a bunch of frequent flyer points and some handy PR. What I like about Anthony is that he’s able to reframe the problem and always cuts straight to the point with no fluff or bullshit. This is typified by his quote in our interview that “marketing is the poetry of capitalism”. The Sizzle is his latest baby; tech news & bargains with an Aussie slant, curated for you every afternoon for just $5 per month - incredibly underpriced in my opinion.

Eileen Ormsby is a writer, journalist and blogger of All Things Vice, as well as an author of two books - The Silk Road and The Darkest Web. Every time I’ve sat down with professors and practitioners of sociology (Dr Monica Barratt), psychology (Dr Stephen Bright), or criminology (Dr James Martin) to talk about the Dark Web, one name kept recurring - Eileen Ormsby. She is undoubtedly the most sighted journalist in the field today, and we’re very lucky to have her living here in Australia. The Dark Web is a fascinating place, mostly filled with scams, but also filled with people on the edge of the law and morality. The Gonzo style of journalism that Eileen embodies, challenges society on what should be right or wrong, showing the human side to every case and exploration.

Dan Monheit is the Director of Strategy and Co-Owner at creative agency Hardhat, Co-Host of the Bad Decisions Podcast, MC of lecture series Real Big Things and a self-confessed sneakerhead. Dan truly embodies the archetype that is “Chutzpah”- combine that with his need for incessant learning on cognition and you have one impressive media brain. Michael Jankie was kind enough to introduce me to Dan a few months ago, and as you probably already know, I always sit up and listen when a former guest makes an introduction.

Anthony Ross is the founder of Tribal Wellness, host of the podcast Feed My Mind and a unique individual with knowledge in evolutionary biology, health and wellness. The advertising guru David Ogilvy popularised the term that you should always surround yourself with individuals far smarter than you are. Anthony has this constant, insatiable drive to learn and regurgitate for the rest of us - like an industrious mamma bird spitting out knowledge. It’s people like this you should always surround yourself with, because they’ll only bring the best out in you.

Bernard Wheelahan AM is a retired business executive whose career spans multiple continents across mining, resources and renewables. His work in building Latin-American and Australian relations has been recognised with scholarships named in his honour at ANU, and a membership to the Order of Australia. He’s served in an incredible array of positions, that makes my life look like child's play. Bernard has served as Chairman of Pacific Hydro and the Council of Australia Latin America Relations, President of Shell in Venezuela, and directorships that have included Transfield, Woodside and Karoon Gas. After I interview each guest I always want to know: If they could pick just one guest to be on the podcast, who would it be? When I asked Phil Ruthven this question, he said Bernard’s name in a heartbeat. Bernard is wise, kind and full of brilliant stories from an individual who has clearly taken his fair share of responsibility through life.

Henrik Andersson CFA is the CIO of Apollo Capital Management - an active fund manager of crypto assets across currencies, ICOs, arbitrage and event-driven trades. Henrik has over 17 years experience in global financial markets, with almost a decade on Wall Street. Henrik holds a Master of Science in Engineering Physics from the Royal Institute of Technology and a Master of Science in Business Administration and Economics from Stockholm University. The financial services industry doesn’t stand as high and mighty as it once was. Like an old dilapidated building, it tries to keep out the weather of scandal after scandal. But distrust and frustration continues to grow as we start to rip off the band-aid from the GFC globally. There are crypto junkies who believe that the evolution of cryptocurrency will be as dramatic as the planes hitting the Twin Towers, and that the financial world will be split into pre and post-crypto. For those who want a less radical and more rational approach, then seeking the opinion of institutional investors like Henrik - who are able to wade through the backwaters of crypto hysteria - are incredibly valuable. Henrik is in my opinion, one of the wiser owls in this space. His Swedish background and incessant focus on learning, brings a level-headed approach that’s required for the industry to mature - while providing us with the opportunity to understand what these assets actually are, and how to value them.

Dr Iggy Soosay is a GP, former Chairman of the Australasian College of Nutritional and Environmental Medicine, Lecturer and Member of the RACGP-AIMA working party on Complementary Medicine. Iggy is an Integrative/Functional Medical Doctor with over 35 years, who has led the way in Australia for treating chronic gut related issues. While the treatment of the gut has become the nouveau riche trend in our Instagram feeds over the last few years with Kombucha & Sauerkraut as your trend products, the gut has been treated by people like Iggy for decades. For me, it’s been a long issue in my adult life that I’ve constantly battled within this strange David (me) v Goliath (the gut) in which the gut is easily winning. Iggy refers to Hippocrates, the father of medicine, and his quote “all disease begins in the gut”. I can assure you, that for someone who has constantly dealt with chronic gut issues - that’s what life feels like. The impunity of which your gut can react to anything around you; environment, food, stress - largely dictate my ability to perform at an average level of competence. Fatigue, pain, random autoimmune reactions, and impact on your lifestyle are just some of the features that the gut can hammer onto us long time sufferers. Meeting Iggy has been a relief for me personally. After interviewing him, I took it on board to visit him as a patient. Needless to say, he discovered elements of my history (including regular antibiotics as a child), that no GP would have discovered in a microscopic five minute appointment - as I bounce around aimlessly over the last 5 years, like a ball in a medical “pinball machine” from specialist to GP to specialist.

Wade and Byrne are the founders of the brand and podcast known as Sci-gasm, and two of Australia’s brightest young science communicators. If you like that skeptical combination of science and comedy, that brings an understanding of science to a scientific pleb like me, then I’m absolutely sure you’ll love the work of these two gentlemen. I became enthralled with science as I went through an interesting stage of self improvement, driving to and from university listening to Dr Karl spin fascinating stories from boring peer reviewed papers. I matured with Neil Degrasse Tyson as he made me realise we’re really just cruising through space on a giant green, earth-shaped convertible. I became aware of my hunger for rationalism and the truth as I discovered the likes of Richard Feynman and Sam Harris in my most recent years of self discovery. Scientific communication is the toughest form of storytelling and a noble task - you’re aiming for the truth while also making it palatable for the everyman. I have immense respect for what Wade and Byrne are able to do, and I think you should discover that to.

Dion McCurdy is a lawyer and co-founder of NewVote, an independent nonpartisan nonprofit. NewVote is a foundation whose aim is enhance democracy through their digital participation app; allowing you to gain access to a dedicated public record of every political issue, goal and solution facing Australia, a source of balanced information, a tool to co-create policy and be part of the decision making process, and a channel to communicate with representatives. Politics is a fascinating area we’ve covered across many interviews with MPs, media commentators and pundits in the past - so I thought it would be prudent to get a individual that can help all of us better understand the structure of democracies. Democracy and free speech is being tested in the West by polarising groups from both the left and right, this interview should kick us off in the right direction around structuring and managing democracy - one of the most important creations for managing societies.

Jamie Skella is the Co-founder of Horizon State, co-owner of eSports gaming bar GG EZ, and former board member of MiVote. I’ve had the pleasure now of hosting a few Australian cryptocurrency chiefs, so us mere mortals can further understand the exceptional capacity of the blockchain technology. Many of you have asked me, “what else can blockchain do?”. So I thought it was prudent to reach out to Jamie, a rare innovator actually building a tool with immediate utility. Horizon State is like the digital Electoral Commission, or more colloquially known as “The Decision Token”. Jamie and his team have truly built a mechanism and secure voting system for the 21st century. By doing so they have destined the admirable end of the old paper voting system that defines western canon in democracy, capitalism and law.

Josh Wade is a comedian, entertainer, podcast host, and co-founder of Verve Network. Josh has built an incredible comedy career at a very young age, forged in the pits of YouTube with his character “Cunny”. If I was a comedian, I feel that my style would be very much in line with Josh. He’s just as skeptical as I am, always questioning what’s real and what’s a mirage - all the while looking to improve both himself and others. He’s almost like a young Aussie George Carlin. When we spoke last time he made mention of his business Verve briefly, but in this episode we really got to hear about what his plans are, and potentially what the next few years looks like for a guy who’s chomping at the bit to get shit done.

Adam Stone is an entrepreneur, Founder of Speedlancer and serial globetrotter. The son of our former guest, Adrian Stone, Adam has been running businesses in the eCommerce and Telecomm space since the early age of twelve. His award as Australia's Student Entrepreneur of the Year in 2013 by the Entrepreneurs' Organisation and the Forbes Asia 30 Under 30 List, speaks to his constant desire to build both businesses and a lifestyle he enjoys. Speedlancer is currently the world’s fastest freelance marketplace (at least of what I could find through Google). As a regular user of Upwork to support our business infrastructure at Neuralle, I can with absolute assurance that communities of curated professionals like Speedlancer, is almost certainly where the future of work will be.

Shayne Hunter is a comedian and ex-leader of radical left wing group, Antifa in Australia. He’s probably one of the most intelligent and intense comedians I’ve ever come across. He’s floated in and out of ideology over the last few years - initially a right wing libertarian, then an anarchist/leftist radical and now a steadfast libertarian pushing people to not fall into identify politics. Shayne is socially aware and poignant in his analysis of society, a benefit to anyone wanting to learn more about group-think or ideology. This is a brilliant lesson in how people can be sucked into cabbaging their minds about belief, ideology and cults. Most of my time was spent getting out of Shayne’s way, letting him explain the journey and ideology of the radical left - the group he believes is ideologically more dangerous than ISIS.

Nic Hodges is the Founder of Blonde3 & Robot Deputy, and former Head of Innovation for media brands such as Foxtel, NewsCorp & MediaCom. Noted for his tagline “nostalgic for the future”, Nic has also been dubbed a polymath by a few former guests, including the man who made our introduction, Steve Sammartino. You’ll notice in multiple interviews my fascination with media and how it can be used for challenging the stories we believe as a society, with technology’s ability to rapidly expand that potential, and with psychology’s skill at reading our mental nature. I see Nic as being uniquely at the intersection of those points here in Australia, and a fascinating individual you should be keeping tabs on.

Jordan Shanks aka Friendlyjordies is a comedian, radio host, YouTuber and creator. Well known across YouTube for his exceptional impersonations of Australian bogans, and political infotainment that will have you cackling for hours. In our previous interview with Jordan, I spoke of his status as an individual who should form your “Counsel of Bullshit Detectors”. Now that he’s entered the foray of the culture wars, he truly has rational experience in dealing with group-think & BS. It’s important that you and I are able to get a mix of comedians that have certain political biases. Intelligent and truthful comedians are important to your future, and Jordan should be a crucial piece of your “Bullshit counsel”.

Dr Peter Brukner OAM (MBBS, FACSP, FACSM, FASMF, FFSEM) is a sports medicine doctor, the founding partner at the Olympic Park Sports Medicine Centre in Melbourne and the founder of the SugarByHalf campaign. Peter is a world renowned sports medicine clinician and researcher who was recently the team doctor for the Australian Cricket team. Peter has one of the most extensive list of credentials that I have ever come across - in my mind he’s sort of like the Vito Corleone of Sports Medicine in Australia. To give you an understanding of Peter’s acumen, he has served as a doctor for Liverpool Football Club, The Australian Cricket team, the Australian Olympic team, the Socceroos, and numerous AFL teams including Melbourne & Collingwood to just name a few. He is a stalwart of the sports media, specialising in injuries and overall wellness, while also publishing academic books including Clinical Sports Medicine. He was one of the founding members of the Australian College of Sports Physicians, and the first Australian to be elected to the Board of the American College of Sports Medicine - receiving an Order of Australia Medal for his efforts. Peter’s experience and focus will hold him in good stead for his new goal of cutting sugar by half across Australia. As a proponent of the Low Sugar/Carb diet I’ve found Peter’s speeches to be fascinating, providing an Australian to the burgeoning school of thought, turning the food pyramid upside down. I’m looking forward to the release of his new book A Fat Lot of Good, and hope that it can push this information outside of inner city professionals and into the broader public. This was a fascinating episode covering a life in sport and how a wake up call completely changed his opinion on how to eat.

Kristofor Lawson is the co-host of Moonshot podcast, one of Australia’s most popular technology podcasts, and Founder of Lawson Media. As a journalist, Kris holds an incredible wealth of experience across old media brands such as the ABC, SBS, News Corp and Channel 10. But entering new media is where Kris has really hit his straps. By creating Lawson Media (a podcast production company) and the Moonshot podcast, Kris has showcased his unique storytelling skills. Moonshot was featured by Apple Podcasts and has reached #1 in the Australian Apple Podcast technology charts, was awarded an innovation grant from Australia's Walkley Foundation for Journalism, a finalist in the Melbourne Press Club Quill Awards, and won Best Independent Media at the ACS IT Journalism Awards. Kris holds a unique insight between the divide of old and new media, one that fascinates many of us as social media becomes paramount to marketing & PR success. This was an almost selfish episode, having joined Kristofor as a guest to discuss cryptocurrency investing on behalf of CoinJar. The opportunity to learn about storytelling and media production was just too good to pass up.

Ryan Creed is the co-founder of an urban farming startup, Life Cykel, created in 2015 with co-founder Julian. After discovering how to grow mushrooms from waste coffee grounds, the two of them left their jobs as FIFO workers in the Western Australian mines, to inspire new attitudes towards food production, waste products and mushrooms. Three years on, Life Cykel is connecting people with delicious and convenient mushroom products in the form of drinks, home growing kits, and five commercial farms across the country. This episode is a fascinating lesson in the potential of urban farming, and my new-found obsession with its ability to meet the expected shortcomings in global food production. Ryan is a brilliant educator and someone whom you should keep an eye on as this industry grows. Many thanks to Geert from Farmwall (ep 55) for the introduction.

Jeff Kennett AC is a former (43rd) Premier of Victoria, current media commentator, President of Hawthorn Football Club, dog lover and the founding Chairman of Beyondblue. Well known for his outgoing and politically incorrect demeanour, Jeff is one of the most colourful politicians of our time, or as many Liberals would say “the greatest Prime Minister we never had”. He was the Premier that I grew up with in my early years, and having grown up in a Greek Liberal Democrat family, he was almost revered as a god for being a Liberal leader that actually made decisions. No matter your politics, Jeff has done an immense service for the community at large, and the state of Victoria. There are invaluable lessons that we can glean from his life, and I hope this short conversation provides you with the opportunity to do just that.

Danielle Weber is an incredible Australian artist based here in Melbourne, Victoria. Her passion and love for painting is highlighted by her distinct portraits and sheer quality of work. Danielle’s work has extended to include original pieces for a number of high profile clients including Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. It was Melbourne I Love You Founder Chris Cincotta, that first introduced me to Danielle’s work, and I thank him for the exceptional suggestion. Danielle is one of the most hard working artists I’ve come across, and one that truly has talent. She’s the type of artist that helps me appreciate the art form, by focusing on the individual beauty in each piece of work - whether a mural or portrait. I’ve often struggled at art galleries, particularly when they have interpretive modern art that honestly makes me wonder why it’s there. Danielle’s work is so innate and I think she opens up the door for many to appreciate this world.

Dr Prash Puspanathan is a medical doctor & Neuropsychiatry Fellow at The Alfred Hospital Melbourne, Founder and Managing Director of Cryptocurrency Broker Caleb & Brown, and a clinical advisor to the Australian Psychedelic Society. A medical doctor by training, with years of experience in the field of psychiatry, Prash was first drawn to psychedelics through his philosophical beliefs and the power they’ve shown to impact your mind. This in turn, exposed him to the world of cryptocurrencies. Prash is a unique combination of a conscientious (crypto) & creative (psychedelics) individual, drawn to both areas of work. Both crypto & psychedelic research worlds are just at the beginning of the great leap forward, and I’m certain that Prash will be at the forefront of that here in Australia.

Ed Husic MP is The Honorable Member for Chifley, Shadow Minister for the Digital Economy, Employment Services, Workforce Participation and the Future of Work. He is a Labor Party Member, a mad Chicago Bulls supporter and as he’s said himself “Blacktown through and through”. Ed is one of the most straight-talking MPs I’ve heard in the modern political era. He’s incredibly gracious, clearly well-read and - I believe - a politician that instills confidence in an era where polarisation and political correctness is the word on everyone’s lips. I have no doubt that we’ll see important work from Ed over the coming years.

Geert Hendrix is the founder & CEO of Farmwall. Farmwall is a socially responsible, high-tech, urban agriculture company that aims to transform cities into food producing ecosystems. Their subscription-based, urban aquaponic-inspired farm supplies naturally-grown, fresh and delicious greens to award-winning cafes & restaurants such as well-renowned Top Paddock. Geert is an incredibly humble and intelligent guy, building one of the more interesting local startups that I’ve come across. The trajectory for an infrastructure-based startup in the agriculture space is not as rapid as your typical software startup, but I have a strong belief that Geert is laying down the groundwork for a paradigm shift in agriculture. Many thanks to our previous guest, Seb Lindner (Ep 41) for the introduction.

Dr Monica Barratt is a social scientist at Australia's National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre, based out of the University of New South Wales (UNSW). Monica’s research concerns the social and public health implications of internet technologies for people who use illicit drugs, and the impacts of legislative responses to drugs. She is particularly interested in how we respond to the emergence of novel drug trends (like the Silk Road) and how these trends are enabled by digital technologies. This has allowed Monica to engage hard-to-reach networks behind the Dark Web, in conversations about research and policy. Drug policy, and the use of psychoactive drugs, has fascinated me since I developed a generalised anxiety disorder in my early 20s. In other episodes we’ve engaged psychologist Dr Stephen Bright, and criminologist Dr James Martin. By including a sociological perspective, we can all better understand the mechanics and implications of using such drugs in society. This is another meaty episode where we focus on the topic of drug policy, prohibition and the current social commentary around it - especially in the digital space.

Michelle Bourke is an entrepreneur, public speaker and CEO of Artlivemedia. She’s an incredibly honest and deep thinker who’s clearly well read. Her driven attitude maintains a passion for learning to consume all available knowledge, but her extraverted nature ensures that she’s understanding and humble about it. Artlivemedia and Michelle have built a reputation as an award winning digital agency in Australia over a very short period of time. From inception of the business it won the 2016 Telstra New Business award, Michelle has sat on the board of Startup Vic (of which she recently left) and has spoken at numerous events including a panel with former Prime Minister Julia Gillard. In my assessment, Michelle is a very fair and honest entrepreneur, who has built a brilliant business. We share many personality traits that sometimes push us to the brink mentally - so I enjoyed being able to bounce ideas and learn from someone like this. This episode is a great conversation to share with anyone who’s in an early stage startup (or at least thinking of starting one) to provide a refresher on their thinking, preparation and motivations. Michelle uncovers how she works and what she finds motivating and productive, and I believe we could all benefit from her insights.

It’s been a year since our debut episode - so at Episode 52 we decided to do a year in review. This is our second try at what we are coining as the ‘Semi-Regular Show’. This format is more discussional and allows us to explore self-improvement topics, tools, gadgets, and recent events in the media. It’s incredibly important as long form content creators that we take time to reflect and pause, at least a few times every year, all the while building the community on conversation. These Semi-Regular shows provide the best format for that. This time we have two guests. The first is Lauren Lopatko who is Neuralle’s co-founder, the Uncommon Podcast producer, and additionally my fiancée. Our second is Michael Jayaranjan who is a good friend, wandering salesman and now perennial traveller. You may remember MJ from episode 5 & 33. As usual, enjoy the episode and we thank you for tuning in.

Lauren Pei-Lee is a semi-pro who competes nationally in the burgeoning performance art of pole dancing - a sport that combines dance and acrobatics on a vertical pole. Pole dancing is a sport that has fascinated me since I met Lauren, because at the same time I was learning about the GymnasticBodies movement and people such as Ido Portal. This form of exercise and control over my body was a lot more interesting to me, rather than just completing rudimentary weight training. When I saw people like Conor McGregor also start to use Ido Portal as part of his training camp, I was intent on broadening my exercise routine into this area. The sport has rapidly changed over the last decade, to the point where it’s now been provided observer status by the GAISF, the body in charge of classifying sports for the Olympic committee - possibly paving the way for its inclusion in years to come. The connotations of stripping still remain for the layperson, but I think there’s enough BuzzFeed & VICE videos online now to show that perception is changing, there’s numerous studios providing a base for talent, and competitions that become more competitive as each year goes by. Lauren is a good friend of mine, and an incredible talent. She’ll help broaden your understanding of this new sport, and what opportunities it provides for athletes interested in the performance.

Kim Michaelides is a fashion designer, creative genius, colour savant and incidentally, my auntie. I could make the excuse again that this is another selfish episode, where I look to document as much of the knowledge and experiences from members of my family. My reasoning is pretty straightforward, having had a grandmother develop dementia over the last few years I feel it’s necessary to interview the family around me. But it would be disingenuous of me to say that this episode with Kim is only for selfish reasons. As you may have learnt in our interview with her partner Chris, Kim is a well regarded Australian handbag designer. Spencer & Rutherford is an iconic local brand, designed by Kim for well over 18 years now, appreciated in both the local and international markets. Chris would be the first to admit that she’s the smarter of the two. My first memories of Kim are the witty dry jokes she would tell, that I never really understood at such a young age, but have come to appreciate in time. Kim has achieved more than most in her career, all the while being able to have children in the process. There’s immeasurable lessons that both young, career driven women, and couples considering entering business together, can learn from this episode.

Michael Jankie is an entrepreneur who’s built multiple companies in completely different industries, that have shown a nous for operating with small-medium businesses. It’s funny that I’m reading Small Giants by Bo Burlingham at the same time I’m tasked with writing an apt introduction for Michael’s episode. So often you’re told that you must grow at all costs, raise massive amounts of capital, only ever serve the institutional end of a marketplace, and eventually flip the business on to an investor “who’ll do the right thing for the company”. During the entirety of the interview, and as I learnt about his decision to pivot his former business - you could get a sense of how deeply he cared for his customers (an often overlooked segment of the market). This deep care for his customers, and the creation of a high quality product - shows that he’s already hitting 50% of the criteria for becoming a “small giant”. Being that I’m also travelling in Japan I thought it fitting to assign a Japanese proverb to Michael’s attitude in business. The proverb goes: “Nothing Lasts, Nothing is Finished, Nothing is Perfect”. If you want to build any business, I think that’s a good attitude to have.

Justin Dry is the Co-Founder and Joint CEO of Vinomofo, an online platform focused on sourcing, selling, and creating community over a love for wine. Justin is the greatest example of an entrepreneur (that I’ve met so far) who has pursued something he loves to do, integrating his occupation into his life - rather than the other way around. By doing so, you’re able to grab a sense of the passion and credibility Vinomofo wields amongst winemakers and distributors alike - ever wary of dealing with the price-conscious larger players. While some may compare Vinomofo with Aussie tech giants like Canva, Justin insists (and is right to do so) that he doesn’t run a tech company, or even a startup. Vinomofo is a massive, locally grown, e-Commerce business. A business that has experienced exceptional growth and a loyal following in such a unique niche - gaining strong media attention in the process. A proponent ourselves of goal-setting and visualisation, Justin runs by many inspirational mottos and quotes lining his office walls. But our favourite is one that really captures the essence of success and contentment in life. To put it simply; “Give No Fucks”.

Rohit Bhargava is an entrepreneur and fellow podcaster, hosting one of Australia’s top startup and tech shows - The Startup Playbook. There are incredible lessons to be learned from Rohit’s interviews, for any budding entrepreneur and business owner. But I think the greatest lessons are in Rohit’s own experience. A failed startup will always teach you grit, while entering the content media business will teach you that quality and time is king. Rohit underlines how important the classic parables extolled from the likes of Gary Vaynerchuk can really be; time, consistency, and never expecting success. These are valuable virtues for anyone to have in their life, and lessons that I’ve learnt myself in the last year of recording and publishing a podcast. I know there are useful bits of gold in this episode for everyone, so I hope you enjoy it.

Oliver Phisher is an author, and good friend of mine currently residing in the beautiful city of Belfast. From the early stages of our friendship, I had always known that Oliver, with his introspectiveness, was going to be a writer in some form. His experience of toiling away in self-publishing is invaluable to any wannabe author and novice writer out there, who struggles to make movement on their writing project. There are many parallels with self-development and writing, because so much of what you achieve is ultimately dependent on what you set your mind to and complete. To be a writer is the ultimate form of ownership of your life. Oliver is an incredible friend, who will always challenge me on a belief, viewpoint or process in my life. I hope this episode underlines how valuable that can be to your own life.

Claire Connelly is an award winning freelance journalist, Founder of Hello Humans, Editor-in-Chief of Renegade Inc and soon-to-be author. To me, Claire underlines the importance of the Fourth Estate, and what their role in society is - to make you think. My recent discussion with Dr James Martin illuminated this more than any interview, with his example being the mainstream media’s treatment of drugs busts. More often than not a large scale drug bust will be broadcast on the news, with Australian Federal Police in tactical gear (as if they’ve just come straight from the bust), and broad assumptions on market value dictated to the interviewing media. No one questions whether this is the best investment of drug policy dollars, or whether it indeed saves lives of the dependent users. This example, underlines the importance of Claire’s exacting and critical analysis of the realities of our society. She’s an incredible writer, with a clear-headedness that allows her to identify her own biases as she works. I have much respect for all she’s achieved, and all she will achieve in future. I strongly suggest that if you enjoy this discussion you go support her work through Patreon & Hello Humans.

Steve Hui or “The Points Whisperer” as he’s affectionately known, is the Founder and CEO of iFLYflat - a rewards points specialist service based in Australia. If you’ve ever wondered how to create a level of luxury and access through your spending, then Steve is your man. There’s no doubt that at some stage in your life, you’ve endeavoured to use your frequent flyer points, aimed for an upgrade or maybe just dreamed about a beautiful flying experience for once. Like most of us you’ve probably come to be shocked at how out of reach that really is, or how long it takes to accrue anything of value. So with all of the noise out there on earning points through spending - how do you know the best way to go? With Steve’s knack for numbers (thanks to his accountancy background), his passion for flying, and ability to analyse opportunities assists in this process of identifying the how, where and why for any business traveller, or individual wanting to book their trip of a lifetime. As Steve mentions, Rich Dad, Poor Dad was the book that shaped his view on how he values money. It’s all about maximising those dollars to provide you with access - where you really can get that experience, if you just do the numbers right...and with far less money than you’d think.

Dr James Martin is a Senior Lecturer and Criminology Program Coordinator at the Department of Security Studies and Criminology at Macquarie University. He has specific expertise in cryptomarkets, online drug distribution, organised crime and vigilantism. James (like our previous guest Dr Stephen Bright ) has an exceptional ability to highlight the intricacies and misconceptions of the way in which the general public views illicit drugs, challenging what you believe of the government narrative. His leadership in research on a new and burgeoning field of criminology - Cryptomarkets - is underlined by the fact that his work was referenced in the court case of Silk Road’s accused mastermind. Cryptomarkets have had immense success with decentralised protocols like Bitcoin’s Blockchain and the anonymous browser Tor, which emphasise a key geo-socio-political theme we see happening across the entire world - decentralisation. This episode will challenge your perception on drug culture, trade and enforcement - hopefully enlightening you along the way. James finds himself continuously reminding people that Criminology is just not as glamorous as TV portrays it - we’re looking at you, Law & Order!

Elaine Stead is a Venture Capitalist, and is the Head of Blue Sky’s VC division. Elaine is not your traditional VC (the Patagonia vest wearing kind), but an embodiment of the new generation of young VC’s entering the game - former entrepreneurs with a nous and passion for technology and teams. You’ll discover that Elaine is unique in her understanding of the “game” that is venture capitalism, and has built an offering at Blue Sky that provides Australian entrepreneurs with rare access to Asia and the Americas. She is open and incredibly sharp with her wit (trust me, you should follow her on Twitter for the travel tales). But Elaine also displays incredible awareness and emotional intelligence - only attributes that could be fostered by her unique upbringing and career. You’ve probably heard Elaine articulate gems about what it takes to build a companies in many interviews now, So I hope that we’ve been able to capture a snapshot of her united theory of entrepreneurship for you.

Seb Lindner is an entrepreneur who’s built an incredible lifestyle off the back of Airbnb - with some indirect guidance from lifestyle entrepreneurs such as Tim Ferriss. Originally starting out with Short Stays Victoria, Seb has since branched out into multiple projects including urban agriculture, and most recently, his ride sharing app, Buckle Up. You’ve no doubt heard people like Gary Vaynerchuk highlight how high-tech, massively funded, cash- guzzling startups are the trend, and that at some point this ‘glamour’ of entrepreneurship is going to come crashing down. This obsession almost makes it impossible for the everyman to consider starting a modern, yet agile, small business. Coincidentally, Jack Delosa recently highlighted that the greatest reason for entrepreneurs joining The Entourage was not because they wanted to earn a million dollars, but because they wanted to define their lifestyle and do something that had meaning to them. What I like about Seb is that he bucks this glamour trend. By building such a simple business first, he learnt what mattered to people and the product, then removed himself entirely from the day-to-day process. By doing that, he’s demonstrated to you and I, that you can create space through modern small businesses. Space that is so crucial to working on the business, developing yourself as an individual (through, say, meditation retreats), or simply attempting challenging new projects (like Buckle Up). This interview, along with one of our previous episodes with Nathan Chan, gives me immense confidence that businesses like ours and yours can reach the goals we want, so long as we don’t overcomplicate what can be necessarily simple. Doing that can open up your life to an opportunity that you never thought possible.

Josh Wade is a comedian, entertainer, podcast host, and budding documentarian. Josh has built a career around brilliant comedy that was forged in the pits of YouTube through sheer necessity and the creation of the realistic character, “Cunny”. Josh is as real as they get. They often say that art must reflect your life, and he has certainly experienced it through dark periods that you and I may never have to experience. His acceptance and openness of these hardships shows a man that can dig deep into just about any topic, and tell the story behind it. You’ll learn through his stand-up, docos and podcast that he has a thirst and drive to understand the intricacies around your world, helping people understand it further in the process. This was an amazing opportunity to interview a young man that’s achieved a lot in a small period of time, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Philip Dalidakis MP ( @philipdalidakis ) is the Victorian Minister for Trade & Investment, Innovation & the Digital Economy, and Small Business. In addition, he is also MP for the Southern Metro area. Phil is a unique individual, a life-long St Kilda supporter (something I wouldn’t wish upon my worst enemies) and a politician who genuinely cares for building the infrastructure that will allow Victorian businesses to succeed, while setting up a future that his children can be proud of. I believe it’s incredibly important that we engage and understand the leaders of our community. For the Startup & Innovation sector across Australia, this will be a useful conversation for considering the goals of Phil and his team in the community. I hope that this interview will showcase that politicians are just ordinary people, tasked with a never-ending list of priorities, a mob of people looking to get something out of of them, all the while trying to navigate our future.

Jordan Shanks aka Friendlyjordies is a comedian, radio host, YouTuber and creator. You have no doubt seen the extent of comedians that we’ve hosted on this podcast including Neel Kolhatkar, Titus O’Reilly, Tom Ballard and now Jordan. I strongly believe that in this moment in time, comedians play an indispensable role in keeping both the media and public discourse in check. In this new digital media world, there’s so much content being distributed that I think the real value in future will come from people we trust. This group of comedians, including Jordan should form your “Counsel of Bullshit Detectors”. While everyone is paranoid about skin colour, social justice and being excruciatingly politically correct - these people are keeping it real about legitimate topics and challenging the current process of blindly following group-think. It’s important then that both you and I are able to get a mix of comedians that have certain political biases. Jordan is unabashedly biased about his political leanings to the left, and he will challenge any conservative with sound rationalism across many topics. I have personally loved Jordan’s Friendlyjordies channel since YouTube existed in my life, and I find his work hilarious. It doesn’t surprise me that with such intelligent “infotainment” that Jordan has brought further sides to his creative work; in particular radio hosting, and life advice. His life advice channel has been incredibly refreshing and a real contrast to many comedians, showing that he’s always focused on being better. Intelligent and truthful comedians are important to your future, and Jordan will be a crucial piece of that to your “Bullshit counsel”. I hope this conversation convinces you as to why.

Adrian Stone is your favourite small-time VC, and a self-confessed personal finance geek. Adrian has started and sold a multi-million dollar insurance technology business, seeded numerous startups and founders in Melbourne, all the while building a comfortable real estate portfolio. I’ve been wanting to cover the area of personal finance for a long time now, and being that Adrian is an expert on the topic (with intentions of writing a book), I thought it made sense to rope him into speaking to you again. Everyone claims to understand personal wealth and finance, but Adrian makes a valid point in that unless you’ve had some form of financial success in your life, you really shouldn’t be writing about it. So why is personal finance important? If you think about it, personal finance allows you to work back and ask - why am I doing what I’m doing with my life? By articulating why you’ve chosen your profession - the business you’ve started or lifestyle you’ve created - you’re able to clearly delineate how you want to spend the time you have in this precious life and how you will fund it. At the end of the day, we need cash to live. Warren Buffett has always said that “money doesn’t know where it comes from...it all spends the same”. Whether you run a brick business or a technology startup, knowing how much is coming to you and when is important for outlining and defining the lifestyle you want. This episode is a nice primer for future episodes covering all the key topics across debt, budgeting and finance.

Tom Ballard is a comedian, TV show host, and former Triple J radio presenter. It’s kind of surreal to believe that after all those years of sitting in traffic on the way to university, listening to Tom & Alex’s breakfast show, that I’d find myself interviewing him in the flesh. Life can be funny like that. I have immense respect for what he’s done as an entertainer - it’s the sign of a great comedian when they can effortlessly move across different mediums - whether it’s TV, radio, podcasts or stand up. Tom’s podcast (Like I’m A Six Year Old) is undoubtedly one of the most popular Australian produced shows at the moment. His ability to have well balanced, inquisitive and funny conversations across many political topics is exactly what you need in a world where everyone’s screaming at each other. Although Tom is politically left, you’ll find many conversations he has with people who have diametrically opposed ideas - and yet a civil conversation is still able to be had. This is the secret weapon of comedy. I believe it’s important that you and I continue to learn together about having deep, long form, political conversations. Without it, we won’t be able to make sense of the flood of content and sound bites that pervade our digital world. This was a refreshing take on how Tom views his world, and challenges political conversations. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Jessica Curl is a functional diagnostic nutritionist, personal trainer, strength coach, former athlete, and now, owner of The Better Health Project. When my former guest and now coach, Paul Creasey, recommended I interview Jess I thought I should sit up and pay attention to what she’s doing - particularly because she has incredible insight and knowledge when it comes to sleep. My own experience with sleep and stress management began way back in 2012. Like some of you (25% in fact), I was experiencing debilitating generalised anxiety disorder. I remember going to hospital several times in an ambulance and it wasn’t until I was sitting in a hospital bed in the emergency unit, where both my dad and the resident doctor (who now knew me by first name) gave me a very frank conversation about lifestyle. That whole period was really the catalyst for a chain of self improvement (particularly focused on the brain and body), and hence resulted in the eventual creation of Neuralle. I know that statistically you’ve experienced anxiety at some point in your life, which is most often correlated with poor sleep and stress management. During my own self-discovery, I realised that sleep and stress are the bed-rock of your health, and it’s incredibly likely that you aren’t managing it correctly - in fact not many of our listeners are. 30% of the world is sleep deprived according to the WHO, and the effects are enormous (reducing our sleep by a third increases DNA damage by over 200%) . There are over 82,000 results for “sleep” books on Amazon as of October 2017, and I’m absolutely sure that the majority carry on with old wives tales about everyone needing 8 hours sleep, that consuming a high dose of carbohydrates before bed helps, or drinking lots of water before bed is required. We were originally considering writing an e-book for you and our listeners, but we instead decided that interviewing someone like Jess and sleep scientists, would be a better way of opening up your knowledge. The importance of sleep cannot be underestimated. In our interview, Jess noted in a piece of peer-reviewed literature, that the longest known example of a person surviving without sleep is 18 days, and for surviving without food, is over a year. Jess is incredibly knowledgeable when it comes to this area, and I know that this is a great way for you and I to start our research together.

Phil Ruthven AM is the founder and current director of IBISWorld, an international corporation providing online business information and forecasting - widely known for its breadth of information available. As a Member of the Order of Australia, Phil is respected for his commentary across all forms of media on business and the economy, revered by previous guests such as futurist and demographer Bernard Salt AM. When I spoke to you in Bernard’s episode, I highlighted the importance of data and statistics in defining the story. Phil, himself, says in this episode that facts often ruin a good story, and so that’s why I felt you should hear from the man who paved the way for people like Bernard. Too often you and I see people using hearsay and scuttlebutt (as Phil coins it). How many social occasions have you been to, where people start trumpeting phony realities that you know are most definitely wrong? Phil outlines how you can to take a holistic approach in business or personal life, and how that will particularly hold you in good stead for life. The future of Australia is bright, particularly beneficial to our generation. While we spoke about what is actually coming, and how automation will impact your life, he also highlighted that politics will play a crucial part in that future - and why the current lack of political leadership could be disastrous for the long term. What I respect about Phil is that he’s always strived to make better decisions, and in the process make you and I smarter in the process (or at least seem smarter). He has a genuine hunger for understanding what is happening in the world, and is always humble when doing so. I’ve never heard Phil speak poorly, or act aggressively to anyone. It was an incredible opportunity to interview Phil (his last personal audio interview was with the ABC in 2008), so I hope you enjoy this as much as I did.

Michael Jayaranjan ( @michaelcjay ) is a good friend, wandering salesman and self-improvement geek. You may remember MJ from episode 5 (currently our most popular) in which we spoke about making rapid changes in your life, and constantly improving yourself as an individual. My goal in doing an episode regularly with MJ, is to convince this kooky individual to get on air regularly, while also discussing changes in the field of scientific self-improvement including tools, tricks and gadgets. MJ has a unique ability to see through the noise when it comes to assessing yourself as an individual, seeing where you fit in your own world (whether it’s a business, community, family, other), and cutting through any crap that people dish up. He’s constantly making me reassess decisions in my life and my own motivations; that’s an incredibly powerful friend to have around. The last thing anyone needs in their life are friends that allow you to talk crap, lie about the realities in your life and not challenge you - those are fake relationships. Jim Rohn famously said we’re the average of the five people we spend the most time with, and I think that’s definitely true by hanging out with people like MJ. This semi-regular show’s format is largely inspired by Tim Ferriss’ & Kevin Rose’s “Random Show”, where we can discuss random topics such as tools, documentaries, podcasts, books, experiences and so forth.

Justin Peckett is an ex-AFL player for the St Kilda Football Club and Partner of Leading Teams, a company that helps improve both leaders and high performing teams. When it comes to leadership, and high performance, I’ve always looked to the military and sport for setting the standard. You’ve probably experienced the typical workplace leader who has never truly earned your respect or commitment. Instead they lead by enforcing your respect through position or ability to stall your career progression. Military and sporting clubs are a whole different beast. You won’t just be assigned leadership because you have tenure, you must demonstrate it. So how do military and sporting organisations encourage leadership? The US Navy Seals are known for having the internal commandment “leadership is ownership”. This has been popularised in the private sector and Silicon Valley in recent years - but what they mean, is that taking ownership for everything in your world is a requirement of being a good leader; complaining about outside forces impacting your life is not an excuse. They believe in this principal so stringently, that there’s another saying in the Navy Seals; “There are no bad teams, only bad leaders”. Leadership is the highest leverage component of what makes a group of people effective or useless. You don’t agree? Consider the same-sex marriage debate in Australia. Whether you agree or disagree on its validity, the fact that our nation's leaders decided to not take ownership and have a free vote is a prime example of bad leadership. Their indecision will no doubt cost the Liberal Party their status as the ruling party, as they’ve shown their lack of a backbone. It will cost our nation another $122M (plus interest), and created a divisive media debate that will further drive both the left and right of politics apart. All because your leaders were beholden to minority groups, and did not take ownership. I feel that in the Western world we’ve all become blinded in blaming others or outside factors for our situation, and hence it mirrors the current political situation in the US, U.K. or here in Australia. Perhaps now you understand why I think Justin’s work is so important, and maybe he’ll spur you on to take a little ownership in your own life.

Bernard Salt AM is a demographer, futurist, author, columnist and business advisor. Bernard is easily one of the most highly regarded demographers in Australia, known by most millennials for the misrepresentation of his famed ‘smashed avocado’ satire piece. Statistics and raw data that are accurately formulated, provide you a holistic view of what is actually happening in your world (whether it's the economy, an industry, community or family). Too often, people are making decisions on career and business by a feeling, and finding data to support that confirmation bias. How many relatives do you find that deny realities like climate change and cherry-pick statistics, - rather than the entire data set - to identify what is actually happening? There are countless examples like this in your life. Demographics and forecasting are crucial to making smart decisions, and that’s why I wanted to introduce you to one of the preeminent forecasters with Bernard. What I like about Bernard, is that he succinctly uses data to narrate a story that integrates realities of the world around us. It’s clear that hearing Bernard speak, or by reading his written work, that sociology and entertainment also frame a crucial aspect of what is happening in our world - to the point where he can describe accurately what our society was like at certain points of time. My own biases were challenged in this interview. We spoke about the current view of housing, and how migration is transforming how we should navigate the housing market. Those same migratory patterns, Bernards explanation of Australia’s position in Asia, and previous discussions with guests have made me realise that Australia needs to start separating itself from the US and start acting as a neutral power in Asia - it’s our only future.

Nathan Chan is the CEO & Publisher of Foundr Magazine. Nathan is the ultimate poster boy for learning how to bootstrap and grind in the business world, going from no experience, and a passion for marketing, to running a multi-million dollar business in no small feat. When I first created my LinkedIn account, Nathan added me not too long afterwards, and that was my first introduction to Foundr. I didn’t pay attention at first, and sort of breezed through what he was doing with the magazine. But when I noticed that he was not only alive and kicking, but flourishing across social media two years later, I sat up and had a read of his content. Nathan’s secret weapon, one that he probably didn’t even realise he had, was that he simply focused on one marketing channel at a time, and perfected it. First it was the App Store, then it was podcasting, soon came Instagram, and in future, what ever channel fits his goals. What I find valuable about Nathan’s journey, is that he reminds me of myself. I never had amazing grades in high school, but I was incredibly passionate about learning and improving as an individual - something that was allowed to flourish in real life. Nathan had similar frustrations in wanting to be a world class marketer, but no one would give him the opportunity, and so he created his own. It’s always nice finding people similar to yourself, who have the tenacity and effort to give it a go. What I want you to learn from this talk is not that big names like Arianna Huffington and Richard Branson are the keys to success of your business - but sharp focus and refinement of one project at a time. You, like many entrepreneurs (myself included) are scatter gunning your efforts. Nathan is the exemplar of the point that you don’t require insane amounts of funding for every type of business, you just need hard and smart work, with absolute focus.

Roger Montgomery is a value investor, hedge fund manager and best selling author in Australia. Although this is a shorter episode than normal, I couldn’t turn down the opportunity for a couple of reasons: My admiration for Roger’s innate sense of what it takes to find value in Australian businesses, and my desire to introduce you to the world of value investing being in the back of my mind since starting the podcast.

Rohan Connolly is an award-winning sports journalist with a career spanning multiple media organisations and formats including The Herald Sun, The Age, 1116 SEN, Sporting News, the Marngrook Footy Show and now his own brand - Footyology. RoCo - as you may affectionately know him - is what makes sports journalism great; the type of journalist that you idolise because they’re such brilliant storytellers. Working alongside legends like Lou Richards no doubt inspired this “young kid”, but I think it’s truly his obsessive nature and love for the history of the game, that allows RoCo to focus on what matters. You may be like me, where you’re sick of journalists that over-dramatise what happens in the football world, the one that focuses on politics, and acts as if sport is the difference between life and death. RoCo is the antithesis to that - he has no underhanded motives, and knows hows to make the seemingly simple, brilliant to read. I believe it’s the reason why he is valued by legends of the game like Leigh Matthews and Mick Malthouse.

Neel Kolhatkar is a comedian, content creator, presenter and actor with a powerful audience built from his humble beginnings on his YouTube channel, that now has over 46M views. Well-known for satirical clips such as “Australia in 2 Minutes”, and “Modern Educayshun”, Neel is an incredibly intelligent comedy creator with an innate ability to pare back culture and society across a whole slew of different mediums. Neel is the first to admit that virality was what catapulted him into the ether of Australia’s young comedy class, along with the likes of Josh Wade, Elliot Loney & Troy Kinne. But I believe his incredible knowledge of science, society, new media, and politics is what sets him apart. He is a free speech absolutist, who gives significant nods to Louis C.K., and George Carlin, the type of comedian that pushes the boundaries of acceptability. In my mind, Neel is Australia’s millennial messenger of social truth, and I think society is a whole lot better for people like him, because it allows us to not take life so seriously.

Titus O’Reily is a writer, comedian, podcaster and commentator who specialises in satire, with a focus on sport. Titus is your perfect marriage of the larrikin aussie with Douglas Adams; a self-deprecating sense of humour, peppered with undeniably dry wit. Late comedian George Carlin is known for ‘sitting at the front row to the freakshow’ of life which is a great representation of Titus’ musings. I feel that you will see that Titus’ particular focus on the AFL, opens up a unique insight to the fabric of Australian society, and our collective obsession which could be described as a religion. Titus’ persona is so adequately stated in the best piece of merchandise mug I’ve ever seen: ‘Don’t have faith in yourself, have faith in how bad other people are’.

Chris Cincotta is a photographer, and the face behind @melbourneiloveyou on Instagram, and Humans In Melbourne on Facebook. Chris is what Scott Adams (the creator of Dilbert) would dub as a triple threat. He understands people deeply, loves photography and knows how to communicate to people This was a really heartwarming episode for me, and I think it will make you realise that at the end of the day, humans just want to be made to feel special. With an emphasis on gratitude, Chris grew his social influence with something that you or I are probably too scared to do - reply to each and every one of his followers’ comments. This innate sense to make everyone feel special is what boosted his engagement dramatically, growing his accounts exponentially. It’s funny, because this is such a simple and useful mindset that you can use in your own business or social media project. In the age of ‘like farms’, and an explosion of content - where anyone can pretend to be anything behind a keyboard - the importance of staying humble and listening to the person next to you is more important than ever.

Edward Bourke is a political campaigner, consultant, investor and entrepreneur - a mouthful of titles for someone only 16 years of age. As Ed says himself, age is merely a number, proving his stance as an incredibly articulate and rational mind when it comes to all things business and politics. Ed makes it quite clear that he is unabashedly right-wing - something in which has caused some outrage and will for some of our own listeners - particularly with his support of Donald Trump in the presidential election. Over the last few months there have been numerous discussions around ‘why Trump/why do people support Trump/and what is bad about Trump?’. People will know that I enjoy the content of both Sam Harris (an avowed Trump critic) and Scott Adams (a proponent of Trump’s persuasion ability). My own opinion is that we need to break down these partisan walls and understand the human across the aisle. It’s absolutely bizarre to me that in this modern Western world, there is now a razor’s edge between the alt-right and regressive left. To agree with one on a topic, firmly puts you in that camp and draws mock outrage from the other side. And so it’s in this conversation that you realise that it’s not the label that matters, but the contents. Some may disagree with his views, but you’ll probably find that some, seem quite rational (depending on your politics). I hope you are able to appreciate the conversation as much as I did, and admire the level headedness of this young man.

Paul Dimattina’s family has been part of the coffee industry for over 50 years. The founding of Mocopan by Paul’s uncles & father paved the way for many well-known brands in the industry including Coffex, Crivelli, Grinders, and Genovese. The heritage of Mocopan, and a necessity to fend for his family led Paul to start Dimattina Coffee in 1998. Paul has a strong emphasis on family, heritage and the importance of the simple things in life. This episode is more of a personal one; I’ve known Paul my entire life with him being a close family friend and godfather to my sister - he can just about make anyone laugh. And for that, he personifies the fact that hospitality can bring people closer together.

Rita Erlich is a food writer, former co-editor of the The Age Good Food Guide, and author of multiple books including: Melbourne by Menu; Scott Pickett: A Cook’s Story ; and The Makers: A Story of Food, Family and Foreigners. Holding a brilliant reputation for over thirty years in journalism, Rita is also a passionate cook in her own right, reflecting on her early childhood as the reason for where she is today - where not eating her vegetables managed to blossom into a love of all things culinary. That, and her experience with The Age Good Food Guide, has given her the chance to not only assess, but work alongside great chefs such as Philippe Mouchel and Scott Pickett.

Steve Sammartino is an author, futurist and business technologist, who has incredible insights on technology and how it will shape our lives in the future. His belief in diversification in ways of making money (he prefers not to use the word ‘job’) is multi-faceted across writing, speaking and investing. With a background in startups, sales, and marketing, Steve has managed to utilise those abilities and bring them into tech-minded projects. From garnering 9 million views on his viral video of a Lego car, to his successful app Sneaky Surf, the man certainly knows how to practice what he preaches.

Paul Creasey is a body composition specialist and personal trainer. In an earlier life, Paul was by day a school teacher (music and P.E), and by night a bodybuilder/personal trainer. But he soon realised that his true passion was for personal training, and therefore completely pivoted his life to create bioDefined. Paul is widely renowned for his expert knowledge in strength training, biomechanics and exercise execution having been trained by the likes of Charles Poliquin, Eugene Teo and Luke Leaman. An avid self-improver he has by far one of the best fitness and strength podcasts specific to local Australian talent, on bioDefined Radio, and a building library of content across multiple social platforms.

Jordy Kay is an organic winemaker growing his own grapes with his vineyard Chevre Wines, located in the beautiful Otway Ranges. We were lucky enough to visit him down at Barongarook and get a tour of his set up which includes his cabin, cellar and vines. Jordy has an emphasis on not taking life too seriously, which I think would give a lot of us perspective by seeing how he’s pursued his lifelong passion of making wine. I think the greatest lesson learnt in this podcast, is that giving your all is what’s required in making a great product. For Jordy, this means creating a beautiful bottle of wine to open and accompany with good stories. From his extensive travel, to his brief stint in modelling (of which he now laughs at), at the end of the day Jordy is a humble grape-grower from the Mornington Peninsula - personified by his motto “Don’t be a dick”.

Matt Allen is a prominent developer, former entrepreneur, investor and advisor within the Australian startup community, who also works as a startup BD at Amazon Web Services. Matt is a great example, and proof of, learning from mistakes and observation, knowing - much like Amazon’s founder - the importance of being a great leader as opposed to a manager. He is one of the most balanced individuals I’ve met in the startup community, always willing to give truthful advice, particularly to the multitude of founders and startups he meets along the way.

Chevy Long is one half of electronic duo Indian Summer, and creator of apparel line Classy Duds. It’s always fascinating to get into the heads of creative minds, and particularly with Chevy, there is an emphasis on valuing your time to focus on what you truly enjoy in life. A great episode for anyone willing to pursue their creative passions and think laterally, irrespective of how long the journey is to get there. Over the course of this episode you’ll learn that Chevy is actually a man of many hats, and has skills to apply over a multitude of areas.

Dr Stephen Bright is a clinically-trained psychologist with an immense amount of knowledge in the practices and application of psychedelics. Having dealt with generalised anxiety disorder for over 5 years, I’m intrigued by the significance that psychedelic medicine could play in the treatment of mental disorders. For anyone who’s ever had issues with anxiety, PTSD or other mental health conditions, this is a fascinating discussion that could open your mind up to a new area of study.

Asher Tan is a bitcoin entrepreneur in the Australian startup scene, and notably Co-Founder & CEO of CoinJar. Bitcoin is a fairly nascent area when it comes to the finance world, but is quite established in the technology world. Every man and his dog in finance is talking about blockchain and bitcoin, so this is a brilliant primer on what bitcoin is, and its potential utility for the future.

Scott Handsaker is an enigma. Well that’s at least how a few in the startup community have coined it. Scott isn’t the loudest of individuals - which I would I say is certainly his secret weapon - but he is tangible proof in the value of persistence. Every startup founder want results on a platter, and I think Scott’s episode showcases how true grit and sound practices hold you in good stead in the long term.

Felicity Mashuro is a human rights advocate, with a special interest in Women’s Development. In this click-first, think-last world I felt that it’s important to investigate and understand how to build principles around topics of morality and ethics. This is crucial to identifying the difference between what is right, and what is wrong. The truth to certain topics is incredibly important in this modern era, particularly as globalism and technology affects our political and social landscape - giving rise to trends such as populism.

Nathan Sampimon is one of the most selfless people I’ve met so far in the Victorian Startup community. Founding Inspire9 and building a community around it has indirectly pushed the Melbourne startup world forward. It’s forced many wannabe entrepreneurs or geeks into hobbies or businesses they would never have thought of doing, if they were just sitting at home. His work as one of the founders of AngelCube only supported the community further and we’re sure that we’ll see great things as Dream Factory & Tribes start to flourish.

Tim Bishop is the original Man With A Van. Tim is a brilliant entrepreneur, the type who knows how to build a quality experience. So much is lost amongst all this startup hype in the modern era, and it’s people like Tim who show that what it takes to build an exceptional business - to continually improve and not let technology define your progression, instead, focusing on the product. This episode is required learning for any wannabe entrepreneurs, new business owners or frankly corporate executives. Tim distills valuable lessons on building a simple and invaluable product to a unique market.

Chris Michaelides is my uncle, businessman, and in many ways the head of the wider Michaelides family. The reason for this episode is slightly selfish in that I wanted to gradually capture the memories and knowledge of the older generation within my family. In earlier years, my grandmother (and Chris’ mother), was really the “matriarch” of our family - the glue that bound us all together. Her recent battle with dementia has been a somewhat swift changing of the guard, as her memory has gradually faded. That’s made me realise how important it is to capture the knowledge and memories for the next generation. Chris has a wealth of knowledge in business and life, and has always shown the value in hard work or grit. As a secondary father figure, I’ve looked up to Chris over the years, and learnt immensely by picking his brain in business and life. My hope is that you enjoy his knowledge and this conversation as much as I did.

Charlie Carrington's skills as a chef are distinct, not just because of his age, but because of the breadth of knowledge accumulated in such a small period of time. Committing to what his competency & passion, at a very young age, has led Charlie to a position that most promising chefs would only dream of at the age of 30, let alone 22.

Petros Dellidis is a man for all seasons in the hospitality world. He’s worked his way from an apprentice at the RACV Club, to a development chef for both Shane Delia & George Calombaris, globe trotted the mediterranean as man of many hats, then made a necessary lifestyle change by going out on his own. He exemplifies what it means to have the growth mindset, to see your life as a system and always be learning.

Michael Jayaranjan is a good friend, who’s always had a nous and interest in improving his life. Michael’s a fascinating real-life example of a direct change from the fixed to growth mindset, that we constantly push at Neuralle. He’s had some huge changes recently, losing 20 kgs, ending a long-term relationship and moving his mindset from consumption to experience. This interview is definitely more conversational, and I hope this is enough to convince him to do it regularly. Thereby allowing us all to cover these performance & improvement topics & tools regularly.

Tenda McFly is a poet, rapper and good friend. Our interview was quite conversational and broad ranging on how poetry & rap has influenced his life, and improved him as a business person. Linguistics is a key area of cognitive science that we will be covering more of in future. I think that Tenda’s episode will whet your appetite on discovering this field through a more cultured medium.

Angie Giannakodakis is the boss I always needed in my life. If University taught me the importance of learning, it was Angie who taught me the importance of harnessing your thoughts and directing them. The weight of her words for me, are something that I’ll always hold dearly. She’s much more than a restaurateur, but also an armchair philosopher and super proud Greek. You’ll learn a lot from this episode on how to be a humble person.

Eugene Teo aka The Muscle Mechanic is a bodybuilder, strength coach, and educator who’s passionate about improvement. Whether it’s in physical strength and performance, education, business growth and expansion, relationships and bonding, it doesn’t matter – he craves it (and you’ll soon learn why). This relentless pursuit of improvement has led him to where he is now - a straight talking, non-bro science practitioner - ready to improve your innervation and intellect around building strength & therefore muscle. Eugene has also completed another podcast with Coach Paul from bioDefined, definitely worth a listen for those wanting to go deeper into his thoughts on Hypertrophy & Innervation. Apart from being an absolute beast, this guy is a genuinely intelligent & thoughtful person. His clear focus on improvement is the switch in mindset that society needs. Less fixed goals, more continual growth. I’m certain you’ll learn a lot from this conversation.
