Today's guest has one heck of story! Paul MacNamara was originally a horticulturist before taking up teaching English in the prison system. Paul has also penned his first book The Criminal Class which is based on a true story of his time working as a teacher in jail. I thoroughly enjoyed hearing Paul's career leap and when it came to the hard hitting questions I ask every guest I was impressed he loved cooking mince as much as I do! Enjoy. Tanya Perilli is today's delicious guest and she has a fantastic story to share. Tanya grew up with a seamstress grandmother and mother in a small country town in far North Queensland, where there were more fabric stores than dress shops. Fashion was in the blood from an early age. Tanya excelled through her schooling years and was named captain of her High School in Year 12. Despite just missing out on an Architecture degree, she was offered a scholarship at the Queensland College of Art for a Fine Arts degree. Unsure of how she could sustain a life with a Fine Arts degree, with the help and advice of her parents Tanya decided on a different career path and proceeded to complete an Engineering & Construction Management degree at James Cook University. Her journey through the mainly male dominated construction world is a fascinating one and saw Tanya work around the world on some incredible projects, one very close to my heart, Marks & Spencers and their Food Halls! Family circumstances brought her back to Australia and eventually she circled back to her love of fashion and fabrics. She would find herself endlessly searching for something new to wear to the next event or dinner. Following a conversation with a friend in early 2019 she decided to do further research on the fashion rental platforms around the world like Rent the Runway and Armarium in the US, where she learnt about and fully understood the negative impact the fashion industry, and specifically the fast fashion sector, had on the environment. The more she investigated the fashion rental business model the more interested she became as there were so many aspects to consider. Tanya saw this as an opportunity to bring together her entrepreneurial spirit and instincts together with her engineering and project management training, experience, and know-how. Tanya found that although fashion rental in Australia was growing fast and furiously, there was no one offering high fashion on luxury loan. The Fashion Alta Moda business was borne. I was like a kid in a candy store looking through some of Tanya's incredible pieces you can follow her on instagram or take a look at the wonderful collection she has curated below. What a treat to kick off Season 3 with the magnificent Sarah Andrews! You will love listening along to Sarah’s story and no doubt one day her life will be turned into a Netflix movie… Sarah has an unusual background in design, having initially studied spatial sciences at university before working for a large engineering company in London. While successful in her professional life, she was ultimately unfulfilled, and went back to university to follow her passion – design. Almost immediately, she found strong links between her scientific studies and design and has used that knowledge to inform her work on designing interiors. A keen sailor, she found the dry land equivalent of a boat in Captains Rest, an unpretentious shack she renovated in a remote part of the Tasmanian west coast, which has gone on to be globally iconic. Since then, Sarah has styled and decorated a number of other houses and businesses for clients. She also runs her styling and hosting school internationally – this has produced an enormous number of successful students, whose work has appeared in many of the world’s best publications. The Hosting Masterclass — the leading school worldwide for Airbnb owners. Sarah’s latest course is Principles of Styling & Storytelling “It all begins now, here, with you and me. Maybe you want to create an iconic space? Build a business that becomes a cult favourite? Or turn your creative hobby into your life’s purpose? Whatever your destination, this class is your starting point.” Thousands of students around the world have enrolled in her classes and have achieved success beyond their wildest dreams, gracing covers of magazines the world over. Sarah’s masterclasses have achieved cult status globally with rave reviews, loyal followers, and industry support. Sarah’s book Principles of Style out now through Simon & Schuster available from all good bookstores and online In Principles of Style , Sarah Andrews presents her unique take on teaching design, drawing on her experience of working in the industry and as a teacher in her school, which has reached cult status around the world. Importantly, Principles of Style aims to be a timeless learning tool for readers, no matter their own personal style, with Sarah revealing many of the ideas, tips and skills she has accumulated along the way. She does this by examining some of her key projects and favourite rooms, as well as by focusing on her ten rules of styling, formulated both through hands-on experience and studies in the science of design. Sarah believes that everyone has the ability to create interiors that are right for them; in this inspiring and eminently practical book, she aims to demonstrate just how to do so. Totally loved my natter with Steven Marks. Would have probably loved it even more in person with samples from the Guzman y Gomez menu I won’t lie… but sadly this ep was recorded during a lockdown. Steven has called Australia home now for quite a few years but as his accent might hint at, he is from the USA. A fantastic story from his early days hustling in Long Island, to uni and then his first job in the money markets on Wall St (straight out of a TV show). After a dalliance with a job in the UK Steven landed in Sydney with more than one business idea… but the one that stuck was Guzman y Gomez an incredibly successful Mexican chain with almost 160 restaurants in Australia, Singapore, Tokyo, and the USA. He tells his story with so much passion and a funny story or two (including one about pulled pork) you’ll be hard pressed not to feel inspired. He wasn’t sure what a ‘Hall Pass’ was but when pushed he came up with the goods and a great choice! I loved nattering to Casey. A health journo who has spent the past 15 years asking questions of our brightest minds on ways to live a happier, healthy life. A wife, mum, appears on TV and hosts podcasts and events and still occasionally eats chips for dinner! ‘The Bad Girl's Guide to Better’ is Casey’s first book - a stealth help guide (a guide she wished she had in her youth, that breaks it down in a relatable way) to getting your act together, embracing the mistakes you made, and literally becoming and being the best version of yourself. There are some ace testimonials from the likes of Natalie Imbruglia, Jess Marais and Turia Pitt. The book is broken down into 16 lessons including: Be Kind to your Body - it’s the only one you have Reign in the Drinking - alcohol makes you do stupid things Being Good in Bed is Easy - but loving sex is hard Know that Things will Go Wrong - embrace the darkness of the bad times ‘The Bad Girl's Guide to Better’ is out now! Get the kettle on and get comfy because I have got THE BEST guest for you today – Christian O’Connell. I promise you will laugh, cry, want to be his mate, buy his new book and follow him on the ‘gram. ‘NO ONE LISTENS TO YOUR DAD’S SHOW’ is out now. Don’t take my word for it (but if you are interested it is one of the funniest and most moving and uplifting books I have read in ages) take the words of Ricky Gervais, Amanda Keller, Russell Brand and Hamish Blake who all rave about on the book. In 2018 Christian O’Connell was one of the UK’s biggest radio stars, had won truckloads of radio awards and sold-out national tours as a stand-up comedian. Christian and wife Sarah made the decision to move their family to Australia for ‘part 2’ of their lives and for a new adventure. It was bumpy to say the least but Christian’s breakfast show on GOLD 104.3 in Melbourne went on to take out the #1 spot within 18 months and giving the station the best ratings for over 20 years. Making Christian the first DJ to have a #1 breakfast show both sides of the world. “NO ONE LISTENS TO YOUR DAD’S SHOW highlights the hard work and creativity, along with a never-say-die attitude, that ultimately made moving to Australia the best decision Christian and his family ever made.” In other news make sure you hang on for the ‘Hard Hitting’ questions at the end of the pod – the funniest answer to date! Oh, are your ears are in for a treat as you listen to the beautiful dulcet Scottish tones of today’s guest Judy Davie. She worked as a National Marketing Manager for a HR company in the city, but it didn’t bring her any joy. In her personal life she was extremely healthy, had a great diet and practiced Ashtanga yoga four times a week. It was 2001 and a chance opportunity to cook on a TV show called Search for a Supermodel came up. A live-in role for 17 days enlightening and exhausting. Judy felt more alive than she had the past two years but also recognised that these gorgeous young girls didn’t have a clue how to eat well for health, physical appearance, and performance. Back then life coaching was popular, and Judy had a life coach so when she returned to work, she quickly plotted to become The Food Coach . I am being honest and upfront here, I think I have found my newest girl crush. What a totally inspiring superstar today’s guest is. I am even willing to move on from her smooth peanut butter choice (I know madness). Samantha Wills will leave you inspired as she shares her story openly and full of raw honesty and humour. As she says, “It took me no less than twelve years to become and overnight success.” Technically Samantha could be a ‘So I Quit’ guest but she shares her incredible journey in her first book ‘Of Gold and Dust’ making her a ‘Book Club’ episode. At just 21, Samantha Wills founded her own global self-titled jewellery company. Starting from her kitchen table in Bondi with an in-demand jewellery party-plan business, Samantha gained her first big break at Australian Fashion Week in 2004. She was thrust into the spotlight as a stream of celebrities were photographed wearing her pieces - Drew Barrymore, Rihanna, Taylor Swift, P!nk (to name a few). But when some of her earrings were selected to appear in Sex and The City, the young designer relocated to New York to build the brand on an international stage. After Samantha’s early recovery from $80k debt she turned over her first million by age 26. The business went from strength to strength, building a cult following. But in 2019 Samantha stunned the world with the brand’s seemingly sudden closure, at its peak as a multi-million-dollar company. In Of Gold and Dust she shares the journey of this 15-year business venture (a very public brand) along with stories of her private life with rawness and humour. Today my 'Around the Grounds Guest' is the magnificent Lisa Davies. Disclaimer I love this lady and am super chuffed I can call her a good friend. I am so proud of what she has achieved as a journalist over the years. She is Editor of the Sydney Morning Herald and only the third woman in the papers history. This week the Herald celebrates its 190th birthday with the first ever Sydney Morning Herald printed on April 18, 1831. It's believed the paper is the second oldest, continuously published masthead in the English-speaking world, behind The Times of London. Now in 2021 the Herald is reaching more people than ever (more than 9.3 million readers across print and online), having greater impact than ever before. And my mate is the Editor… just saying!! Lisa began her career at the national newswire AAP, worked for the UK's Press Association in London and The Daily Telegraph newspaper in Sydney. Since joining what was Fairfax Media in early 2012 as Crime Editor, she has held several senior reporting and editing roles including Deputy Editor and Investigations Editor. In 2016 she was also the Federal Election Editor for The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age. Lisa has had a particular focus on crime and court reporting in her career, including travelling to South Africa to cover the Oscar Pistorius murder trial, and publishing a book about the inspiring recovery of Sydney bashing victim, Lauren Huxley. Congratulations to the Sydney Morning Herald- 190 years young! Enjoy my chat with my Bon Jovi loving friend. x Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information. She stepped away from her lawyer background at the start of COVID to help connect those who were at risk of isolation and loneliness. Welcome to the Letter Box Project. Connected AU is an organisation working to reduce isolation and loneliness in at-risk populations. We deliver programs to ensure that vulnerable people can access connection, community and companionship in a safe and monitored way, ensuring everybody in our community stays visible and valued. Our Letterbox Project caters for people who don't have access or capacity to use technology, and our virtual hobby groups cater for those that are able to 'get online', but want to find a safe, inclusive community. We have a particular focus on supporting senior Australians, people with disabilities, chronic health conditions and those who live alone. Keira Rumble has a fantastic story to share today on the pod. A real inspiration and go-getter she deserves all the success that her hard work has created. From a pre-diabetic (Type 2 Diabetes) diagnosis and to avoid getting the disease, Keira vowed to change her diet and life. She began studying nutrition and was shocked to discover most ‘healthy’ protein snacks – which she ate most days after working out in the gym – contain the sugar equivalent of two cinnamon doughnuts! She stepped away from the corporate world and made a leap… That’s when Keira realised people need real healthy snacks, and her business, ‘Krumbled’ was born… Enjoy our chat! x @keirarumble @krumbledfoods @habitualbeauty.co www.krumblesfoods.com Hosted on Acast. I knew this was going to be a cracking chat when my guest arrived at the Acast recording studio with CAKE. Ah she certainly knows her way to this podcasters heart… In this Book Club episode I speak to the spectacular Tori Haschka about her debut novel Grace Under Pressure . No stranger to writing though Tori Haschka is a published food and travel writer whose writing has been featured in The Sydney Morning Herald, The Guardian and The Times. ‘Set on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, Grace Under Pressure is a smart and hilarious debut about three mums that are at breaking point when the men in their lives screw up spectacularly. In a show of solidarity, they move in together and create a ‘mummune’ – sharing the load of chores, school pick-ups/drop-offs and bills. The new set-up brings its own set of problems. Grace Under Pressure is about the pressure to ‘do it all’ and the strain of no longer living with a village of support. It’s about the weight of unpaid labour, post‐natal anxiety, social media scrutiny and our culture of digital surveillance. It’s about mums’ Facebook groups, kale smoothies and community. How the most important job we’ll potentially have, comes with the least amount of financial agency. “I hope this is a book that women will press on each other and chat about over wine and cheese. The sort of book that women will want to read in stolen moments – in bed with tea, on planes, trains and maybe even hiding in the bathroom! I would love nothing more than for women to see themselves – and their friends – in this novel and realise that they are not alone. And if I manage to give them a much-needed laugh along the way, then my job is done.” I loved our natter and I am sure you will enjoy it too, get your cuppa and cake or easter egg ready and get comfy. Today’s guest Kim Kerton has a beautiful story to share and I suspect her journey may inspire others who are dreaming of a sea-change… Kim had an uber successful career in radio and headed up teams working in the creative media sales space for one of the leading networks in Australia. But in 2019 she walked away from the long and pretty tiring career she had in media advertising. Her body and mind decided for her that it was time to stop. Kim wasn’t sure what was next and as she explains on the pod she was well and truly out of her comfort zone – she learnt she loved yoga and went on to learn how to teach others. Fast forward 18 months and throw in a global pandemic and her journey has taken her from Sydney to Tasmania where she now teaches yoga, creates recipes and in now also embracing her new passion – ceramic making. And she is pretty good at it! Check out all the Kim has created since at www.goodsideofthebed.com.au @goodsideofthebed_ Enjoy x Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information. 'Around the Grounds' with the most marvellous Nadine Ingram - baker, mother and writer. Her 'Old Fashioned Vanilla' cake was like magic in my mouth and her story is just as delicious! Nadine Ingram is the baker and founder of Flour and Stone, a petite bakery in inner-city Sydney with a large and devoted following for its pannacotta lamingtons, dreamy cakes and buttery croissants. From a dairy farm in the Hunter Valley to Michelin star restaurants in London, and baking cookies in her own kitchen, Nadine has come to firmly establish herself in the echelons of Sydney’s artisan baking community. At the age of 19 Nadine’s love for baking took her to London where she honed her skills in the pastry sections for houses such as Le Gavroche, Caprice and The Ivy. England is also where she met her future husband Jonathan who has been instrumental in her success through his support. They have two daughters named Poppy and Ruby, after whom Flour and Stone was named. Nadine's long awaited and highly anticipated cookbook "Flour and Stone, Baked for Love, Life and Happiness" that is one of her most prized achievements followed up more recently in September 2019 with presenting a keynote presentation at TedX Macquarie University. It was great to catch up with today’s guest in my daywear and not in active wear and having to do a kettle bell squat as our previous catch up’s have entailed… Ben has an infectious attitude to life and exercise. After years as an elite athletic he stepped away from his career at the NRL Cronulla Sharks and launched himself into the world of personal training. He shares his story of how he and co-founder Kate Kendall started Flow Athletic – now Australia’s leading fitness & yoga studio. Ben shares the highs and lows of his story; including how Flow became COVID ready almost overnight. A very driven individual who ran his 40th marathon late at the end of 2018, right before his 40th birthday He also trained up over 50 clients to run the New York Marathon with him. They all crossed the finish line!Ben has raised over $250 000 for charity since launching Flow Athletic. I also love Ben’s eye for detail and his obsession with overseas fitness set ups! I have such an inspirational guest for you today and one who breaks out into song – double bonus! Kiri began her career working as an interpreter for the deaf, she also trained in the beauty space, a skill set that she was able to use on her travels with her partner as his job took them overseas. It was overseas that the inspiration for her new business started but it wasn’t until she was back on Australian soil that ‘Duke of London’ started. Initially clothing for boys, ten years on she is designing and dressing girls and grown up kids too! Duke of London is now found in over 50 stockists throughout Australia, New Zealand, America, Canada and Poland, this Australian-based fashion label has been dressing children world-wide for the past ten years. The unique and totally on-trend designs always find that perfect balance between uber-cool and utter-comfort. Worn by cool-kids all over the globe including the Kardashian clan, the Stefani/Rossdale boys and most recently by Chris and Elsa Hemsworth’s children, as well as Amber Rose and Wiz Kahlifa’s son. It wasn’t always an easy ride and I love Kiri’s honesty about the highs and lows of being a solo parent to two boys and running a start-up. Well it was like winning lotto when I got the thumbs that today’s Around The Grounds guest was going to join me on the pod. Amanda Keller is every bit as magnificent, warm, quick witted, stylish (rocked a red and white ensemble) that I hoped she would be. Basically she someone you want to be best mates with. What a guest. A real treat for your earlobes this one. I had girl crushed on Amanda from a safe (not AVO) distance for as long as I can remember. For those who aren’t based in Australia she is an icon and a perfect guest for International Women’s Day. Co-host of the multi award-winning breakfast radio show Jonesy & Amanda in the Morning on Sydney’s WSFM101.7 and nationally on iHeartRadio, television host on Network Ten on several shows including co-host of The Living Room, and successful author of her stunning autobiography Natural Born Keller. Super chuffed to be chatting to the marvellous Meg Mason for my inaugural ‘Book Club’ pod. She is totally fabulous, made me laugh non-stop and pulls of a wicked Welsh accent for someone who doesn’t call ‘the green, green, grass’ home. Meg Mason began her career at The Financial Times and The Times of London. Her work has since appeared in The Sunday Times, The Sydney Morning Herald and The Sunday Telegraph. She has written humour for The New Yorker and Sunday STYLE, a monthly column for GQ, and was a regular contributor to Vogue, ELLE and Marie Claire, before turning to fiction full-time. Her first book Say It Again in a Nice Voice, a memoir of early motherhood, was published in 2012. Her novel You Be Mother followed in 2017. Sorrow and Bliss, her third novel was published in 2020 in Australia. The novel is being published in 21 countries this year (including in the UK where Emilia Fox is narrating it – I mean bloody hell). Oh and New Regency have just secured the film rights, you may know them from such things as ’12 Years A Slave’, ‘Little Women’, ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’… no biggie!! ‘Sorrow And Bliss’ out now. x Hosted on Acast. Have I got a magnificent chat for you today! At a recent parents evening ‘zoom’ I came away with more than an update on how my son was fairing at school – I also jagged a cracking ‘So, I Quit’ guest. Beck Sutcliffe had worked in various roles within the banking sector since leaving school but a move to the other side of the world, combined with desire for something new encouraged a career leap. As her 30’s came to an end Beck enrolled at University in Sydney and has since started her new life as a geography teacher. I am sure we all have a favourite teacher we remember fondly, one that left a huge positive impression on us (big shout out Mr Burnell) – after an hour with Beck I guarantee her passion and enthusiasm will see her present students remember her for years to come. She even had me excited about geography! And in other news I whole heartedly agree with her two hall pass choices, one of which is the rather marvellous Colin Firth… and with that image of Mr Darcy I’ll be off. I'd been trying to pin today's guest down for a few months so I was super chuffed to finally get time with one of my fav's Ben Fordham. An award winning journalist who rules the breakfast radio airwaves with his Sydney breakfast show on 2GB. His love of radio started back when he was 15 and did his first stint behind the scenes as a work experience kid... and he never really looked back. He is also rather good on the telly too, seen on Channel 9 over the years on various shows including ACA, Today and Australian Ninja Warrior. Ben's passion for family, the underdog and life in general is infectious. He had one or two stories up his sleeve that had me in stitches... including one about his mum Veronica's Ford Laser. Alex's job was literally making her sick. Plagued with gastritis and fatigue, the stress from her corporate job in digital marketing was not doing her any favours. After taking some time off to reflect on what she was (or wasn’t) doing Alex decided it was time to re-evaluate all of her habits and truly be accountable for her wellbeing. Just before returning to work she set off on a mission to find a planner that would help her prioritise her health over productivity and offer reminders and encouragement to put herself first and avoid falling into the pitfalls of bad habits once again. Exasperated with not being able to find what she was looking for, Alex pointed out to Tom the lack of importance that well being played in these diaries, where ‘to do’ lists and schedules reigned supreme. A light bulb went on for Tom; “Let's do it. You identified a gap. Let’s create a diary business.” The delightful Alex shares her journey with me and the highs and lows (don’t start her on printers!!) of starting Saint Belford. Today’s guest is the rather magnificent David Rogers. David or Davey (he is happy with and suits both variations) has a wonderful tale to tell. Davey spent his career working in Sydney in the fast-paced world pf publishing, advertising and lifestyle media. And was extremely fortunate to work with some of the world’s leading brands at Australia’s top publishing houses. But as his newfound love of photography grew (along with his camera equipment upgrades) Davey decided to make the leap and turn his hand at turning this passion into a career. Davey quit his job and moved back to the Sapphire Coast (where he grew up) and spent a year teaching himself how to photograph the beauty that surrounded him. His goal was to capture this spectacular landscape in an intimate way – by watching and understanding how each location reacts under different environmental conditions – whether it be the seasons, wind directions, cloud patterns, star trails or moon cycles. You had me at star trails and moon cylces… As Davey says of himself, he is an ‘over-enthusiastic landscape photographer’ who describes loading his backpack with photography equipment and hiking out to shoot sunrise or sunset as the ultimate bliss. Davey has successfully combined his two passions – photography & media – and his aim is to help brands achieve their marketing goals through powerful imagery, and to remind people of the beauty of this planet. His work is truly mesmerising and has already received praise far and wide be sure to check out his Instagram and website – you and your eyes will be glad you did! www.davidrogersphotography.com Instagram @davey_rogers Hosted on Acast. Claire Devine (just quietly isn’t that the best name ever) is today’s delicious guest. The Granddaughter of celebrated French artists and potters, Claire was born in Toulouse, France and grew up in an art gallery space in Brisbane, Australia. A classical musician and high school teacher, she started painting as a way to pass the evening hours while her handsome Irish husband, Seamus was away for work. Claire had to take a break from teaching when Seamus became ill and their infant son was diagnosed with partial blindness. This break allowed the family to reprioritise, focus on each other and give energy to Claire’s painting. As popularity for Claire’s work grew, The New Devine quickly evolved from a painting pass time into a serious, full-time business. Imbued with vibrancy, colour and joy, The New Devine collection of works is an unbridled celebration of Claire’s Australian roots, French heritage and Irish connections. Claire loves coffee, vintage champagne, Dad jokes, yoga and long walks with her 'tame wolf' Nanette. She really is a ‘chooser of joy’ you will love our chat. www.thenewdevine.com Instagram @thenewdevine Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information. I was so excited to catch up with my old mate with the fantastic voice and the cool dance moves - Phil Burton. He was just about to fly off to Perth for quarantine #2 (he and family had arrived back from the US a month prior and had already completed 14 days in a Sydney hotel) so I was thrilled to get a cheeky hour to chew the fat together on the pod. I had the pleasure of working with Phil Burton and the rest of the band 20 years ago. They were a hard-working lovely bunch of young men then and now they are equally hard working and just slightly older. For those that don’t know Human Nature let me tell you… they have had four albums reach number one, have all been made orders of Australia, were recently inducted in the ARIA Hall of Fame, and have spent the last 12 years with a residency in Las Vegas performing their incredible Motown Show - I know over achievers!! And they are all looking mighty fine – I’ll take a job-lot of whatever anti-aging cream they are using please! The rest of Human Nature are heading straight from Las Vegas to WA ahead of their Dec show there followed by Brisbane and and the Gold Coast. HOW MUCH HAVE WE MISSED LIVE MUSIC…. Ah 2020. For Australian fans of the band their ‘Good Good Life’ tour will see the guys perform live shows all around Oz in 2021 – check out www.humannaturelive.com for more info and tickets. Claire’s incredible story full of highs and lows and more lows and then the stuff of fairy tales really should be made into a movie… Netflix if you’re listening… Claire Summers created the Gratitude Glass Jar as a visual tool to help her heal, by capturing daily notes of gratitude, that enabled her to rebuild herself and open her heart once more after going through five distressing life events, all within an eight-month period, the last of which nearly took her life. Now I don’t want to give away too much more of Claire’s incredible story as she tells it so well but needless to say Oprah Winfrey is involved…. need I say more! As 2020 has been one hell of a rollercoaster I can’t think of a more beautiful and thoughtful gift to give someone for Christmas than The Gratitude Glass Jar. I hope you enjoy listening!xx www.gratitudeglassjars.com Instagram @gratitudeglassjars Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information. I like most of us have seen Movember grow and grow (pun intended) over the years, and unless you have been living under a rock you would no doubt associate the movement with various fury top lips and men’s health. What I didn’t know though was how it actually started. Cue today’s ‘Around the Grounds’ guest Travis Garone. I loved chatting to Travis because as it turns out he is a complete legend and has had a fascinating life adventure to date. His story includes a huge love of nature, the ocean, family trips as a kid around Oz in a red Monaro, Collingwood footy team, quitting his day job (well a few) and flying off to Europe for a woman (that’s a whole story in itself), adventures around Canada and Europe, picking up a culinary trade and heading back to Melbourne to start a creative collective – and I think that was all before his mid-twenties! And then there is the epic idea to start growing mo’s… Travis was super humble about everything that a conversation between mates back in 2003 kicked off. I am a former publicist and so I good and being shouty about amazing things another people have achieved. Movember is an annual event involving the growing of moustaches during the month of November to raise awareness of men's health issues, such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and men's suicide. Since its inception in 2003 (that comprised of 30 mates growing a mo’s) the number of people who have participated is now near 7 million. And in the 17 years the movement has grown from its Australia roots to something 21 countries take part in with over 1 billion dollars raised. AMAZING stuff. There are still ways you can get involved in 2020; ‘Grown a Mo’, ‘Move for Movember’, ‘Host a Mo Ment’ and my fav ‘Mo your own way’. Everything you need to know is at www.movember.com Instagram @movember Get involved and I hope you enjoy my chat with Travis the man behind the Mo... Hosted on Acast. When a friend read a post by todays guest, she emailed it over to me and said, ‘Philippa could be great for the pod!’. And she was right! I did some undercover detective work (i.e. stalked LinkedIn) and read the about me section: “I spent 11 years in the corporate landscape before I walked away to launch a side hustle. Intimo Lingerie – a leading Australian owned lingerie brand – provided me with the framework to create my own business. What began as a way of earning some pocket money while raising my children (who are now 27 and 25), has transformed into a multi-million-dollar business. Over two decades I have created a powerful network and every day I feel empowered and connect with other like-minded women.” Well I sent an email at Usain Bolt spend and was thrilled Philippa was keen to chat. A few weeks after we recorded the pod, we met for a second time on Zoom, in bra’s – well it was technically our second ‘date’. I had wondered how a business model that was based on home fittings (one-on-one’s as well as groups) had faired during COVID and lockdown – and like most things in our life in 2020 this is something you can do over Zoom. As I write this, I am wearing the most comfortable, beautiful cornflower blue bra that Philly (we are mates now) fitted me for virtually. And no this is not a sponsored post; I think at 45 my boobs are possibly beyond sponsorship! I loved Philly’s take on life, suggestions for working for yourself and honestly just how much she enjoys what she does. I hope you enjoy our chat. I am joined by the marvellous Seymour Platt, a name might not be familiar with, but you may well know his mother’s name, Christine Keeler, and the Profumo Affair that she was involved in back in the early 60’s. Although the ‘scandal’ took place 70 years ago it is still as topical now, the affair featured in 'The Crown' and more recently this year with the BBC dramatization ‘The Trial of Christine Keeler’. I first came across the Christine Keelers name after watching the 1990 film Scandal featuring John Hurt, Ian McKellen and Joanne Whalley Kilmer as Christine. For those unfamiliar with what happened, it was 1961 and Christine Keeler a 19 year old model and showgirl had a brief affair with John Profumo the Secretary of State for War in Harold Macmillan’s Tory government, Profumo was a very powerful man and was tipped to be the next British Prime Minister. At the time the affair was first revealed public interest was heightened due to reports Keeler may have also been sexually involved with a Soviet Naval attaché Captain Yevgent Ivanov. Christine had been introduced to both men by osteopath and high society type Stephen Ward. There was huge concern within the ranks that the affair had put Britain’s National Security at risk. And as the description for the film Scandal reads: “ When the affairs are made public, the resulting scandal costs many people their political careers, and someone's life.” But as Seymour explains during the podcast there are two stories at play here in Christine’s life. The other involved a very violent man who stalked and abused Christine for years called Lucky Gordon. It is during a statement to the police about an attack on her by Lucky Gordon during which Christine omitted the names of two witnesses were present during the attack, and later this lie was the solel reason that Christine got sent to prison charged with perjury. Seymour, a business analyst for many years, sadly had his career grind to a halt when COVID-19 struck. Time at home gave Seymour and wife Lorraine a chance to look through all the newspaper articles and court documents pertaining to his mum’s conviction. The pair went on to create a website celebrate his mum’s life and her legacy. It was when Seymour applied his ‘business analyst’ thought process to his mum's story, as well as to all the police and court documents that the misjustice of Christine’s prison sentence became apparent. Since launching the website there have now been significant interest from various legal types surrounding Christine’s case. A ‘Petition of Mercy’ is now in motion and Seymour and the legal team are hopeful that his mother will receive a full pardon posthumously. Seymour is so joyful and funny he had me laughing throughout or chat with all his stories, including falling at Phil Collins feet, crying on cue for John Hurt in the back of a Limo in America as well as his mum’s famous Christmas turkey i

A cracking ‘Around the Grounds’ guest for you and your earlobes today, the magnificent Mark ‘Fergo’ Ferguson. An exceptional journalist, foreign correspondent and newsreader with 36 years’ experience (I asked to see his driver’s license as he doesn’t look old enough), Mark began his career in his hometown of Tamworth in north-west New South Wales, where he scored a job as a cadet journalist at local television station NEN-9 in 1984. His rounds covered everything from cattle prices to country music… Fast forward a few decades reporting from around the world on some of the biggest news stories you will now find Mark on Channel 7 weeknights at 6pm as the network’s news anchor. I can’t see the word ‘anchor’ without thinking of Ron Burgundy, Mark is nothing like Ron I hasten to add, although off camera Mark is actually a very funny man. When he isn’t at the new helm you will find this amazing family man down on his farm counting his sheep… you can take the boy out of Tamworth. I loved catching up with my old mate Fergo and hearing parts of his story I didn’t know – I also think Mark is one of only a few of my pod guests who has actually been withing a 5m radius of their Hall Pass but I’ll let Fergo tell that story… Enjoy! I absolutely love when my nearest and dearest have a career story that was made for the pod, as it means I selfishly get to hang out with them and call it ‘work’. Today’s beautiful guest is my old mate Lucy and her career is right up the ‘So I Quit...’ alley. Lucy was a TV publicist for many years at Channel 9 and then later at Foxtel, working on many top rating shows and with an array of incredible talent. A dream job indeed. However Lucy’s true passion (actually since she was in junior school) was food and the wonderful way creating recipes and cooking made her feel - and as a recipient of some of Lucy’s creations I also loved the way her food made me feel! But it was using food as medicine that would lead to her big career change. Just before falling pregnant and while working on some incredible Lifestyle TV shows (River Cottage Australia for one) she decided to start studying to become a Nutritionist. Now a fully qualified paediatric & childhood Nutritionist. Lucy shares a wealth of ideas and recipes and help when it comes to all things little people and food. A wonderful career pivot made even more magnificent as both Lucy and photographer husband Matt both quit their jobs and city life to travel around Australia in an RV with son Otis. In fact, the three of them made it around Oz one and a half times and Lucy jokes living with a tiny pantry for so long certainly stood her in good stead for lock down. Back home now in Sydney you can contact Lucy through social media or through her website. I hope you enjoy our chat. Lucy certainly helped my with my failing lunchbox offers this end and as always brought me baked goods to sample! x Instagram @lucystewartnutrition www.lucystewartnutrition.com Hosted on Acast. ‘ATG’s’ with Ben Ikin who actually went from playing on, to commentating ‘Around the Grounds’ – perfect guest for this segment! One of Ben Ikin many accolades is that he was (and still is) the youngest ever player to play ‘State of Origin’. In fact, if my research is to be believed he played 150 games of rugby league at NRL level, 17 for QLD and 2 for Australia and won one Premiership. Not bad indeed. His boots have well and truly been hung up now and Ben has spent the last 15 years working as a presenter & writer in the media. In season you can find him on Fox Sports hosting NRL 360 alongside his sparring partner and work husband the respected journalist Paul Kent. Don’t fear if you're not a sports nut there is way more meditation, motivation and marriage tips than tackling talk on this pod chat. I met Ben many years ago when we were both working at Channel 9. Not long after that I met his wife Beth who 15 years down the track is still one of my best mates – you must be down for long service leave soon bird! Now you might think you have Ben pegged from what you have seen and heard from him over the years but think again…. You’ll be quite surprise at some of his answers when you get to my hard-hitting questions at the end of the pod. And did someone say ‘Gangnam Style’. Ben is honestly a thoughtful, kind, sensitive (his word) and curious soul who I loved chatting with. He also shared a ‘bedroom secret’ – basically he and Beth share a marital bed but don’t share the covers they have a dooner (duvet) and it sounds like the stuff of genius and a great night sleep to me. Tikki Merrillees - from Entertainment Lawyer to Energy Healer and Kinesiologist If I suddenly won, the lottery (which would be nothing short miracle as I never buy a ticket) and could afford a team of people on my payroll, as well as in house chef, masseuse, PT, hair & make-up person, dog walker (I could afford a dog then) I would also include this lady, my dear friend Tikki. Tikki originally trained to be a lawyer and spent many years working in Entertainment Law, although she loved the team and her clients, she didn’t love the law. You can see where this is going… what she did love though was alternative therapies and helping others. So after a dalliance as a hedge trimmer (I am talking garden hedge variety not code for ladies bits), working as an executive assistant to Brian May while he was in Oz for Queen The Musical, she finally followed her true passion. 18 years on Tikki is a hugely successful (and much sort after) energy healer, kinesiologist and intuitive coach. I for one am testament that my head and heart is a much happier place since working with Tik’s, she has given me the tools to find inner peace and joy even during the most testing of times. I can honestly say one of my fav places in the world is her therapist table where I love being covered in crystals (for ‘covered’ read one or two) and listening to her calming tones. I hope you enjoy our chat. You can check out Tikki on the website below and if you don’t live in Sydney Tik’s can work her ‘magic’ over Zoom or Facetime whereever you are in the world – BYO crystals though if that is the case.x www.tikki.com.au Hosted on Acast. If you live in Australia there is a fair chance this week’s guest has been in your ears before as Rosie graced our radio airwaves from the early 2000’s. Her broadcasting career saw her work as a presenter on air at Triple J, Unearthed, Double J, ABC Sydney and up in the air as part of Qantas’ inflight entertainment offering. As so many people are experiencing right now (due to COVID-19) back a few years ago Rosie found herself out of a job after a round of redundancies at the ABC. It was during this period in her life Rosie took some time to look at what she wanted to do next… and bingo she knew what she wanted to do! Rosie studied to become a wedding celebrant quite the perfect job for someone who loves people, their stories, love and communicating (she also loves dogs and is thinking about starting a podcast about her canine love – go for it I say). Rosie shares her career story (including all the jobs she tried before landing her presenting gig the Christmas Parade role was a particular standout I loved), with such joy and passion I loved hearing every second! Enjoy and if you live in Australia and are about to pop the question or are start to plan your big day then seriously check out Rosie for the role of celebrant... as I am currently ‘between’ husbands I know if I find myself in need of a celebrant again I would book her in a heartbeat. https://www.rosiebeatonmarriagecelebrant.com Instagram @rosiebeaton Hosted on Acast. I met the fabulous Emily Greenspan when I was in LA for work many years ago. We have stayed friends – even though she nearly killed me during a Soul Cycle class (I only agreed to go if I’m honest as there was a chance David Beckham would be side-saddle… he wasn’t). Emily has had such an interesting career I thought she would make a magnificent ‘Around the Grounds’ guest on the pod. I’d put off our chat as I really wanted to be sat poolside at her house in LA with my trusty mic and recorder but COVID had other plans and Zoom it was. As Emily’s story involved so much travel, I thought even though we can’t travel it might be rather lovely for our ears at least to be taken to faraway places. Tag Arts was created in 2007 by Emily – check out the website below. She initially started her firm while living in New York but is currently based in Los Angeles. Emily has been around the arts her whole life. Her family owned Newel Art Galleries, a prestigious antiques gallery in New York, where she worked for several years. Before that, she was an editor at Elle Decor, a well-known home-design magazine. Then there was Ralph Lauren in the Uk and… actually I will let Emily tell her story. One thing I want to add is as a serious 20th Century history nut/nerd I was on the edge of my seat (literally) listening to the story about her father and his business relationship with the late Jackie Kennedy-Onassis. Jackie bought furniture and antiques form Emily’s fathers gallery – including a beautiful oriental chair (check out my Instagram page). I sat in the chair when I was last in LA, the same chair that lived in the White House and that both Jackie O and JFK would have sat in. And on that note, I hope you enjoy listening to Emily’s fascinating story as much as I enjoyed hearing it. x www.tag-arts.com Instagram - @tag_arts Hosted on Acast. You’ll be hard pushed to find ANYONE in the world who has met Bec Brown and doesn’t think she is the bee’s knees. Trust me. I was so excited (and proud) when I knew she had a book coming out as I thought she would make an excellent ‘Around the Grounds Guest’. And then I got a preview copy of the fabulous ‘You’ve Got This’ and on page 4 I read…. “I started out as a musician – mostly singing. I sang pop, jazz, musical theatre and opera. I’ve appeared on screen and radio, on stage with bands and in shows, have been a singing teacher in primary and high schools and have even been a children’s entertainer. Then I pivoted. I retrained and began a career in public relations, working on campaigns spanning entertainment, media, travel, food, fitness, retail, medicine, finance and more” YOU HAD ME AT PIVOTED!!! And so, the magnificent Bec Brown fitted perfectly into my ‘So, I Quit’ brief and the rest is podcast history. It was as much of a delight getting her on the pod as her incredible Bec Brown Brownies that she bakes and are her trademark in the Australian media space. Bec is the founder and MD at The Comms Department whose client list include radio royalty Kyle & Jackie O, Jonesy & Amanda, Bras N Things, Red Nose Day to name a few. In between running a successful PR company, baking brownies and keeping fit Bec also found the time to write the incredible ‘You’ve Got this’. Combining 20+ years of creative experience and working with some of the biggest entertainment and media brands in the world, PR professional and founder of The Comms Department, Bec Brown brings you YOU’VE GOT THIS –the ultimate career hack for anyone wanting to build their dream career in any creative industry. Trust me it is a cracking read with frame worthy illustrations by Inga Campbell. Enjoy our chat and to quote Jack Nicholson “Bec you make me want to be a better publicist” – obviously I tweaked the original line from ‘As Good As it Gets’ but you get my drift… ‘You’ve Got This’ is available wherever you buy your books – it is also available as an audio book voiced by some chick called Bec Brown. www.thecommsdepartment.com.au @becbrowncommunications Hosted on Acast. Kellie Sloane has graced Australian TV screens for over 20 years. From the ABC to Channel Ten, to her long-time home at Channel 9 (including a role on the popular ‘Today’ breakfast show) and ending her on air time as a news anchor for Channel Seven. A career as a journalist and presenter that many would give their right arm for. But for several reasons (all will be revealed in the pod) Kellie wanted a change of direction and now she is the CEO for Life Education. Life Education is a household name here in Australia, a charity whose mission is ‘Empowering children and young people to make safer and healthier choices through education’. Two incredible careers, one amazing woman! I hope you enjoy Kellie’s story – I know I certainly did and I especially loved her private jet story with John Travolta and the shower – but I’ll let Kellie tell that one.. www.lifeeducation.org.au Instagram @kelliesloane Hosted on Acast. Like most people when I am old and rocking on my rocker on the porch at my old peoples home, I won't remember 2020 fondly. It was and always will be the year that sucked balls. But as a 'half glass full' kinda gal I am I have to find a silver lining, and my silver lining for 2020 was becoming friends with this total superstar - Phoebe Parsons. Our paths crossed a few years ago when I had to write a media release at Nova Radio to announce the winner of the podcast competition, I can admit now I was green with envy and maybe too much kale, as she had won and I wanted to win the comp - the only difference between us was she had actually submitted and podcast and I hadn't. Whatever, minor details in my book. Phoebe had turned a book idea about her life into a podcast and it was pure genius. Don't take my old, jaded, COVID opinion as gospel instead take the over 1.5million listens as proof this lady is the real deal. Funny, sharp, open, honest and a total delight on the ears I love her! In fact her advice in episode one that leaving a tax return unsubmitted will actually cost you loads in the long run is the reason I Usain Bolt'ed it to the local H&R Block A-SAP. I am so grateful we bonded during COVID, I was blown away to be a guest on her pod and I loved her honesty she shared on mine. She has had an incredible career; is a gun PR, F45 devotee, has appeared at the Melbourne Comedy Festival and 'fessed up she had to Google 'Hot celebrities' ahead of my Hall Pass question. Phoebe I salute and love you! Enjoy the episode and check out my mate via the deets below. Instagram@phoebeacp Podcast:Confessions Of A Trainwreck On air Nova 106.9 Hosted on Acast. This ep of the pod is a little bit different - you sort of get 2 for the price of 1 (except podcasts are free but you get my gist). I have had the tables, or in this case the mic turned on me, and I am interviewed about my journey since 'quitting' my day job. Part two of this pod features my glorious podcast wing man Darcy Milne. He was always destined for this podcast as although he first started producing my dulcet tones (haha) when he was working on the multi award winning national drive radio show 'Kate, Tim & Marty' he has since 'quit' to focus full time on his podcast production company - Pro Podcast Production. Darcy is legit one of the best humans to have walked this earth. Don't just take my word for it, you can ask anyone who has had the pleasure of crossing paths with this true gentleman and they will all say the same. I love his honestly about his journey from juggling his day job and 'side hustle' to making the leap and going for it out on his own. He now makes podcasts for everyone, some big companies like IKEA (one of my fav places on earth) as well as newbies, well like me! If you have ever thought of doing a podcast or want to talk to someone who can help bring your idea to life Darcy is your man. His details are below. Darcy thank you for holding my hand through the past few years, for talking me down or giving me a virtual hug over the phone when I have got emotional - you are a superstar! To celebrate the NRL Women In League Round (that’s National Rugby League for those outside Oz) I chatted with the magnificent Kasey Badger. I was lucky enough to meet Kasey back when I worked at NRL, loved her then and still love her now. She is such an inspiration. Kasey is one of only two females (Belinda Sharpe being the other) that have reached the NRL refereeing level – think premiere league if you are a football / soccer fan. So incredible! She is also a modern history lover and was a mean member of the debating club back in her school days. She is funny, warm, has spent her life wearing tracksuits (and makes them look good), has an epic story to tell and is married to the equally outstanding Gavin Badger (who is also an NRL referee). I spoke to Kasey from inside the NRL bubble – don’t freak out it was over Zoom! You can follow Kasey on Instagram @kaseybadger, check out the gym her & Gavin own at @peakaltitudetrainingbrookvale and you can listen to Kasey co-host of ‘Refs Round Up’ podcast Hosted on Acast. Scott Gault - From TV Editor to Ramen Chef and Restauranteur Even writing this I can still taste the magnificent ramen I enjoyed at RaRa , one of Katie & Scott Gault’s three Sydney restaurants. I enjoyed every single mouthful and savoured the delicious broth (who do I think I am a bloody food critique?!) as the week before Scott had taken me through the whole process, including ‘agitating’ the broth and how the noodles are also all made on site. Scott worked as a full time TV editor on documentaries, lifestyle and reality series – which in itself would be a dream job to some. But Scott had other ideas… You will absolutely love hearing the couple’s incredible journey including Scott learning the art of ramen making from two ramen masters in Japan – a serendipitous story itself. It isn’t always plain sailing starting a new business and Scott shares the reality of restaurant business – and opening their third restaurant ‘Lonely Mouth’ literally as COVID struck. Scott and Katie (who’s day job is a media lawyer) play to their strengths as a husband and wife team and wouldn’t have it any other way and from what I can see they are nailing it. As Katie’s Instagram mentions you can find her 'worshipping at the altar of ramen' and after my first bowl of the good stuff I might just be joining her there too! Enjoy. One of the things I love about this podcast lark is I get to hang out with magnificent humans. My old friend Erin Molan is a busy person (think busy and then multiply by 100) so when I was able to jag some time to get her on the pod I was thrilled! I knew some of Erin's career story but I loved hearing all the details of how she worked relentlessly to follow her dream. A vibrant, intelligent, beautiful soul who you'll see on Channel 9, hear on 2GB's Continuous Call as well as being a regular on-air with Jonesy & Amanda. She juggles her day jobs with being a mum to daughter Eliza, is an ambassador for various charities and during her down time has just launched a baby range 'Baby Singlets By Erin'. Yep just a few balls in the air... I do love that Erin admits to some less than average creations in the kitchen though (woman after my own heart) and I was shocked to hear her choice of Hall Pass... My friendship with today’s guest began when we sat next to one an other at the local hairdressers and connected over foils and blow-dries. If I’m being completely honest I was eavesdropping Jennifer’s conversation with the hairdresser while my colour was baking (is that even a hairdressing term?!) and I heard her mention the ARIA’s (Australian Music Awards) she was attending with her musician husband. You’ll have to listen on to find out who… but as it turns out he isn’t the only creative talent in that marriage, Jennifer is also a very accomplished artist – but one who’s work uses paint. Her work is inspired by the iconic Australian coastline and Jennifer has also recently ventured into the world of ceramics (I’ll take one of everything please). Now although Jennifer has been ‘creating’ in one way or another since she was a child she did had a successful career as a women’s wear buyer for brand Esprit but 5 years ago she quit it to follow her artistically talented heart. Jennifer tells her incredible story with such a passion and is both real and inspiring. She also has fine taste in hall passes, has won an APRA for her lyrical contribution to one of my fav tracks and has pretty much agreed (she says it on the pod) that I can be her son’s nanny when the family head to Coachella when festival life resumes. 'Joyous' is one word I would use to describe Sally Obermeder; 'A 10/10 totally top human with the best smile going' are a few more words I would use to describe her. And after hearing Sally's full story ( I knew bits and bobs) I would add 'inspirational' to that description. Actually I am still beaming after our chat and we recorded the pod a week ago so my cheeks are sore from beaming! From quitting the world of finance, to backing herself 1 million percent until she got a gig on our TV screen, from battling breast cancer just as she became a new mum, to beginning the now hugely successful SWIISH wellness and style company with her best mate and sister Maha. And then... well you'll have to listen to Sally's whole story, but trust me you'll be hooked till the end and warning your cheeks may also ache from smiling as you listen along. xx Instagram @sallyobermeder @swiishbysallyo www.swiish.com Hosted on Acast. After an hour or two with Carlii Lyon I was left feeling like a massive ‘fan girl’. There I said it. Actually, if there was ‘Carlii Lyon’ merchandise I would buy it and wear it! I have never felt so uplifted and positive as I did after we chatted – why I hear you ask? Well because Carlii specialises in personal branding. To quote her website mission statement ‘To inspire women everywhere to be their own brand and put themselves out there.’ And she certainly left me feeling inspired. I’m sure I am not the only one out there who struggles to ‘blow their own trumpet’, when it comes to self-promotion even as a former publicist, I suck at it. So I couldn’t wait to pick Carlii’s brain. Carlii herself was a top publicist; representing a host of remarkable individuals and brands; including a world-leading Supermodel, New York Times bestselling authors and pioneers in the world of wellness. It was not until she was on extended maternity leave that she looked back and realised I had never taken the time, or made the effort, to build her own personal brand. She was petrified about the idea of putting myself out there. As Carlii says “It took a major loss for me to realise life is too short to play small! Today, she is dedicated to using her professional expertise and personal experience to inspire everyday individuals, executives and entrepreneurs to put themselves out there and allow themselves to be seen, heard and celebrated for who they choose to be.” I hope you feel as inspired as I did after you listen to our chat… Enjoy! x Ps Let me know if you want a 'Team Carlii' bumper sticker or t-shirt before I do a print run www.carliilyon.com Instagram @carlii_lyon Hosted on Acast. Who doesn't love love?! And who doesn't love a good wedding?! I knew just from the emails that Fiona and I had exchanged that I was going to thoroughly enjoy her story - and I wasn't wrong! 11 years ago, Fiona Deans-Dundas quit her job in finances to launch her wedding planning business. 'Couture Wedding Planning' is now firmly fixed as a favourite with brides all across Australia and is a multi award winning. Fiona is both one of the most passionate guests I have had on the pod and she is definitely the tallest! We talk about the biggest and most intimate wedding Fiona has organised, her love of spreadsheets, working around COVID-19 restrictions and pulling off a wedding after breaking her foot halfway through the nuptials! There aren’t many people I would get up at 5.30am five days a week for (Tom Hardy aside) but Michael ‘Wippa’ Wipfli is one. Technically I got paid to get up at 5.30am five days a week as I was the ‘Fitzy & Wippa’ breakfast radio show’s publicist for 4 years… Wippa (the shorter one of the radio comedy duo in case you needed to ask) is a bloody good human. He is very funny (don’t tell him I said that), an incredible family man who loves his wife Lisa and his three children (Ted Jack & Francesca) to the moon and back. If Wippa hadn’t made it in radio, then I think eventually one of his hair brain ideas (sorry – amazing inventions) would have succeeded. He is still convinced that he came up with Google Maps years ago… Regardless I am just glad I get to call him a mate and get to laugh at him, I mean ‘with’ him regularly. I loved our podcast natter – hope you enjoy it too. @wippa1 Fitzy & Wippa can be heard 6-9am Mon to Friday on Nova radio in Sydney and 6-7pm Mon to Friday around Australia on the Nova Network – ONCE A PUBLICIST ALWAYS A PUBLICIST Hosted on Acast. Most people come back from a European holiday with a few extra kg’s around the waist and with a hefty credit card bill; Eugenia came back with a whole new business idea. And so began a career flip that saw her leave behind the world of law (that had seen her work with refugees and spend time at the UN in New York) to launch LUMAS a gallery that showcased affordable art and in particular photographic work from artists locally and around the world. What a wonderful woman Natalie Andrew is! She is so passionate about her positive childbirth techniques that for a nano second, I wanted to be pregnant again just to experience the hypnobirth technique she practices. That feeling passed (along with the flashback to my pregnancy craving for crunching ice cubes – sorry teeth) but I was left feeling that this was the career Natalie was born to do! A career flip indeed from Natalie’s days as online journalist and digital producer working on 7News, The Morning Show, X Factor, Home and Away, The Daily Edition and Australia’s Breakfast show, Sunrise. The seed for her new vocation was planted after a comment from a colleague (when Natalie was pregnant) about her own incredible birth thanks to the hypnobirth technique… Enjoy our chat and I can’t wait for Natalie’s Nonna’s ragu recipe! Today my guest is the incredibly passionate Carla Oates founder of ‘The Beauty Chef’. Now way before we actually met my tummy already loved Carla and her creations – in particular the ‘Gut Primer’ – so it came as no surprise to me that the rest of me thought she was the bee’s knees once we chatted (she even made fermentation sound cool and exciting). Carla was a journalist for many years (and still writes and is a published author to boot) with her focus ‘the world of beauty products’. But this journalist dug deeper into the ingredients of the products she was reviewing, and she didn’t always like what she found. As someone who suffered allergies and eczema as a teenager Carla’s mum took her to a naturopath who adjust her diet and her cleared her skin. Years later Carla’s own daughter experienced similar problems and it was then Carla put the family on a gut-healing diet which left the families skin looking ‘glowy’. Carla began lacto-fermenting foods in her Bondi Kitchen and this eventually led to the creation of GLOW, ‘The Beauty Chef’s’ first inner beauty product. Launching in 2009 ‘The Beauty Chef’ was the first beauty brand to focus on cultivating good gut health for healthy skin – pioneering the philosophy of “Beauty From The Inside Out” and “Beauty Begins in the Belly”. Eleven years and it seems my tummy isn’t the only one that loves Carla’s creations as ‘The Beauty Chef’ is now stocked around the globe including at the iconic Liberty and Selfridges in the UK, on Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop and Net-a-Porter. www.thebeautychef.com Instagram @thebeautychef Hosted on Acast. I bloody love my job (if you can call podcasting a job.. #ihopejobkeepercontinues) it means I get to share people's incredible career pivot stories and best of all I get to meet totally top human's I may never otherwise have met. Chris Ryan is one such top human. She first found herself in the role of journalist, after a stint at that she branched out and started her own communication company - but she quit that to try her hand at stand up comedy. Turns out she is rather good at it... I loved meeting Chris and hearing all about her story. Osher Günsberg has over 20 years of TV hosting under his belt; Channel V to Australian Idol the Bachelor franchise to The Masked Singer. For those who live in Australia Matt Moran needs no introduction. But for those listening overseas Matt Moran is an Australian chef and restaurateur and the tour de force behind some of Australia’s most celebrated dining establishments. At the heart of every one of his endeavours lies a passion for quality produce that is fresh and seasonal. Matt has appeared on numerous top-rating TV shows as well as his own show ‘Paddock to Plate’, he’s a fourth-generation farmer, has had various books published and is generally what I like to call an ‘over achiever’. On the pod Matt and I talk about everything from the enormous impact COVID-19 has had on the restaurant industry, to how his journey began, to his epic 50th birthday celebrations (trust me they were epic), right through to what his last meal would be if he were on death row. My ‘Around the grounds’ guest today is Mark Hughes - a total champion and absolute wonderful human being! Mark had an illustrious career in rugby league; winning two premierships with the Newcastle Knights and representing New South Wales at State of Origin level. It was after hanging up his boots however that proved the biggest challenge of Marks life when in 2013, he was diagnosed with brain cancer. In true Mark spirt is it was during his own treatment that knew he had to start a foundation to help others with brain cancer. And so, with the support of his amazing wife Kirralee the Mark Hughes Foundation launched. The foundation works tirelessly to raise funds and awareness for brain cancer. To date the foundation has raised an incredible 20 million dollars! This weekend marks the fifth year in a row that the foundation has partnered with the NRL to host the ‘Beanies for Brain Cancer’ Round. Mark’s personal journey and his outlook on living your best life are both inspiring and uplifting. Even though he loves smooth peanut butter I loved chatting to my old mate on the pod. Eleven years Tara along with husband Danny quit their day jobs as graphic designers to take a leap and follow their dream to start a furniture and homeware store. After years spent traveling the world as designers, they had always wanted to bring some of the treasures they came across back home. They had big ideas of creating a magical store full of wander and curiosity. Fast forward to present day and Tara and Danny’s dream has well and truly been realised. Under the banner Few and Far the couple have opened five stores in NSW, and created a wholesale brand called Indigo Love. The couple have been through so much during the past six months; all their stores were in bush fire affected areas and then were closed due to COVID but luckily Tara and Danny were able to pivot and increase their online offering. During the recent lockdown period Tara also decided to start work on a new course she had wanted to create. The idea behind the course was to share all the knowledge the couple had garnered on their business journey. I spoke with actor and mental health advocate Sam Webb before COVID 19 struck on his last visit Sydney before he flew back to LA. Sam is one of the best examples of a ‘glass half full’ human I have ever met! As well as gracing our TV screens in various acting roles Sam is also one of the co-founders of the LIVIN organisation. LIVIN helps shine light on mental health. “LIVIN is all about living your life at the top and breaking the stigma around mental health. Today’s guest is Georgia Grace. A proper pivot and fascinating story awaits... Georgia studied journalism and ended up working in agency land looking after pharmaceutical company’s. But it didn’t make her heart sing. As a child she had been incredibly interested in learning all she could about sexuality and the body. That passion and interest resurfaced again when Georgia found herself unhappy in the corporate world. Fast fwd a few years and Georgia is a certified Australian Sex coach and as her website states she is ‘Passionate about sex, pleasure & relationships’ she spends her time supporting individuals, couples and groups. Georgia runs workshops, online courses, is a well-respected speaker in her field, has a regular column with GQ Magazine and has written a book called the pleasure journal. I loved chatting to Georgia. Today on ‘Around the Grounds’ I’m chuffed to be able to share an interview with an old friend of mine, Kara Rosenlund. We chatted back before COVID-19 up in Brisbane in Kara’s beautiful studio. For those that don’t know Kara’s work she is a photographer, stylist, author, and is the owner of a jaw droppingly splendid Instagram feed. A lover of animals and nature Kara also rather spectacularly helped raise over 200k for koalas affected by the horrific bush fires in Australia. Check out her Instagram feed, check out her website and beautiful online store (‘mermaid pool’ is my fav) and check out our chat! On a side note for some bizarre reason I break out into weird voices at times during our chat (I’m blaming the one glass of champagne I may or may not have drank before pressing record…) Enjoy! Today on ‘Around the Grounds’ I am thrilled be joined by the fantastically, glorious Myf Warhurst. From Triple J to Spicks and Specks , I’m a Celebrity to co-hosting Eurovision with the marvellous Joel Creasy. Myf is a lover of Dolly Parton and all things kitsch, and she legit bring bundles of joy to everything to touches. I am so thankful I sat next to her years ago at a show Tim ‘Rosso’ Ross and her brother Kit performed at. Regardless of my over-clapping and white wine breath we followed each other on Instagram and my life and feed are definitely better with this bird in them. Emma has been described as a joy-chaser and she certainly left me filled with joy after our chat. Emma’s story saw her make a leap and leave a successful corporate career where she was working for blue chip company to try her hand in the fitness space. I loved hearing the wonderful 'Eat, Prey, Eat' element of Emma's story! Eight years on and Emma has done incredibly well turning her business into a globally recognised workout and fitness education company. COVID 19 however has seen Emma temporarily close nine studios across Australia and just hustle like all hell to figure out a path forward for her business. Thankfully Emma had spent the last few years building over 200 online workouts as well as certified instructor training programs across Barre, Pilates and Yoga…and so the business ready for the ISO pivot. The fast-flip didn't come without sleepless nights and the juggle to keep a business afloat while home schooling two small children at the same time! An inspirational story and a wonderful woman who I can confirm is indeed a joy-chaser! Instagram @barrebody www.barrebody.com.au Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information. Today my guest on 'Around the Grounds' is the glorious Jennifer 'Jen' Fontaine. Jen is founder and MD of Private Idaho an artist management, and artist development company who have offices here in Australia as well as in LA. Jen and her incredible team work with iconic Australian talent including Human Nature, Guy Sebastian and the beautiful Jules Sebastian. I have been lucky enough to have known Jen for many years. In the music and entertainment industry she is a well-respected powerhouse of a woman. I loved catching up with her from her base in LA where she is in lock down with son Maxwell and her two beautiful dogs Bowie and China. I loved hearing Jen’s stories of rock n roll, travelling the globe, almost dying a plane with Molly Meldrum, learning how to start from scratch when Private Idaho landed in LA 4.5 years ago AND the importance of women supporting other women. Today’s guest on 'Around the Grounds' is Irish actress and author Amy Huberman. Look to be honest she is totally cool and I never expected to ever get her on the podcast. I ended up getting her on after some incredible investigative journalism on my part... or you could call it stalking. However you look at it she agreed to come on for a chat and I am so bloody chuffed she did. Before you listen, and if you are not familiar with Amy, or her work, she is an incredibly talented writer and actress. She has shared the screen with the likes of Andrew Scott (aka The Hot Priest in Fleabag), Martin Sheen, Chris Dowd, as well as appearing along side James Nesbit in the British hit show Cold Feet . But I came across Amy while watching Finding Joy (available on ABC iview in Australia). I laughed so much watching the show a bit of wee came out...sorry TMI. BUT not only does this incredible woman star in the show (along with the hilarious Aisling Bea), she also wrote it. She is funny, talented, bloody gorgeous, has held hands under the table with Amy Poehler but according to Amy her husband Brian O'Driscoll has nicer feet than her's, proving no one is perfect. Check out Finding Joy and follow her on Instagram you wont regret it. Simone was a celebrity / TV make-up artist for many years, but when her son Harry was born the juggle of long hours on set made her re-think her working life. What started off as a career change into the world of floristry and events led her to the world of candles and a passion for perfumery. Four years on and Simone Voss Luxury is a well-established range of candles, diffusers, body lotions and washes that is stocked in high-end stores around the world. While Andrew Voss, a celebrated sports commentator, hasn’t ‘quit his day job’ the couple are very much equal partners in running the business. With Matt Burke’s illustrious sporting career, he was a shoo-in for a spot on my ‘Around the Grounds’ podcast. Even though I grew up as an English and Welsh union supporter it was hard not to like Matt when I worked with him back when DVD’s existed… and meeting his wife Kate sealed the deal – top bird! Years after hanging his rugby union boots up for the Wallabies, Matt is now a permeant fixture on our tv’s as his role as sports newsreader with Channel 10. Julie is one of my closest lady friends and so I was super excited to get this duo on (not least as they make the BEST vodka I have ever tasted, and I have tasted a lot of vodka…) but as they had made such a fantastic career flip. But with any good cocktail that Eduard creates their story comes with an extra ‘twist’. Otter Craft Distilling (OCD) was in its earlier stages as a business; being picked up by elite restaurants and bars in Australia, were gaining serious interest from overseas and then won some coveted alcohol awards. Then COVID-19 struck and while alcohol sales went through the roof and straight into our lockdown glasses not enough people were stocking up on premium alcohol. And OCD ground to a halt… that was until they quickly pivoted and started to manufacture WHO (World Health Organisation) approved hand sanitizer. You’ll enjoy their story and tips on how to work with family members. WARNING Eduard attempts karaoke toward the end of the episode in case you have sensitive ears! Michelle Glew-Ross is the founder of lifestyle brand ‘My General Store’ and is the biggest sunshine lover I know. She is happiest in nature with her boys, Bugsy and Bobby, and adores slow days with the family at home. As always whenever I catch up with this gorgeous soul I came away from our podcast chat with a happy heart and a tummy full of herbal tea! Rhian Allen doesn’t do anything by halves! It was while she was pregnant and looking for nutrition and exercise options for new mums that she realised there was a real gap in the market. Six months pregnant, working in publishing sales she started a business plan (at six months pregnant I just wanted to put my feet up and eat peanut butter from the jar). Rhian believed in her idea wholeheartedly and convinced her husband that they take the gamble, sell the house and go for it! 10 years on The Healthy Mummy has helped 100,000’s of mum’s transform their health and bodies. I came away from our chat so enthused about my own career goals, Rhian is so inspiring and and her passion and joy is infectious. Honestly, I LOVE, LOVE, LOVED this episode!!! I dare you not to smile after you listen. Jeremy Fleming along with wife Tabitha ran a hugely successful staging company called Stage King. Designing, engineering and building elaborate stages for major arts and sporting events such as the Edinburgh Tattoo. The company was hugely successful in a relatively short time… Then in early March the Sydney-based company were in Melbourne, where they had created and incredible and intricate stage at the Grand Prix for Robbie Williams and Miley Cyrus to perform on. Then COVID-19 struck… Lock down rules and group gatherings banned meant the events industry had literally been stopped in its tracks. Thanks to some quick thinking, and Mick Glossop the companies 2IC (who designs and makes furniture in his spare time as a hobby – love you Mick) a new business was created almost overnight. The company are now making working from home furniture – and it is bloody lovely and super stylish to boot! Not only have they pivoted like a ballerina saving jobs and creating others they are also giving a part of each sale to charity! Welcome back to season 2. New podcast artwork and a new segment await your eyes and ears! As usual each week I will feature a guest who has made an incredible career pivot and who will share their inspirational story with me. However, at a time of world lockdown I wanted to reach out and chat to friends in various countries and check in with them; the new segment has its own jingle and everything and is called ‘Around the Grounds’. In this episode I chat to Janine Hall. A Kiwi born and bred, Janine spent many years in both the UK and Australia in high powered marketing roles, but it was only after snagging what she thought was her dream job back in New Zealand she realised it wasn’t what made her heart sing. So, she walked away from the corporate world and set up a health and wellness retreat. Fast forward 10 years and Janine is now CEO and Founder of Escape Haven the 5-star award winning luxury women’s retreats in Australia and Bali. We spoke before lockdown and since travel is off the cards at present Escape Haven has provided some amazing online options – check them out at www.escapehaven.com My inaugural ‘Around the Grounds Guest’ is my old friend, television journalist and craft Queen Leila McKinnon. I absolutely loved chatting to Jules, not least because she and Cam had just announced their baby news on the weekend. Jules has had a fascinating career, moving to London in her early 20’s she spent time working at the Iconic Harrods as Head of Bridal Hair & Make-up (even doing Mrs Al-Fayed’s hair). Her next gig was as a ‘Master Barber’ at Royal warrant holding establishment and the oldest barbers in the world. Missing home, Jules came back to Sydney and ran a trendy blow dry bar… and then she applied for a show you may know, MAFS. It was during the three months of filming, and spending her days and nights getting in and out of shaped underwear that the idea for her new business was born. Figur as Jules says “Is designed for confidence and comfort, with the goal of making women feel beautiful and confident in their clothes and in their everyday lives” Jules shares her experience of putting everything she has into a start-up business, whilst in the midst of a lock down and while ‘growing a human’. She also shared who her and husband Cam’s Hall Passes are… This was my first podcast interview post COVID-19 lock down. As someone who is ‘technically challenged’ at the best of times, after many failed attempts (and a few lawn mowers that halted recording) I felt like Eddie The Eagle at the Olympics when I finally nailed the set up!
