Milka Loff Fernandes started her career as a presenter at the music channel VIVA TV in 1999. What remained a secret for a long time was that during this colorful period, the peak of Milka’s popularity, she also struggled with depression, eating disorders, and later epilepsy. In 2004, she decided to withdraw from public life and embarked on a "healing journey". Back then she looked for means and ways that enabled her to confront the madness called everyday life, and now, nearly twenty years later, she has become acquainted with mental health hygiene practices that we talk about in this episode. At the beginning of her career, someone told Marie that she should not be defined by her job, but by a verb. She knew instantly that her verb was 'to create’. Originally from Montréal Canada, Marie-Pierre Blanchette is a self-taught perfumer with a background in anthropology, art direction and design. Turning 40 made her reconsider what would truly make her happy in the next 20 years of her career. Starting at a young age, Layla Qassim sought financial freedom and worked at cultural institutions that celebrated Arab heritage. During her university times and while making her first steps at the trading desk at an investment bank in London she faced a life-changing health scare that made her put the brakes on all her endeavors. She took a leap of faith, moved to Paris to live every day as though it was her last. Not long after, she eventually settled in New York for 7 years where she quickly moved up the ranks at Wall Street. From the start Nadine Michelberger together with her co-founder and husband Tom, wanted to create the first hotel in Berlin which replaced the typical lobby, with an open space that invites guests and visitors for encounters. This idea was born back in 2003. As years went by, the hotel has evolved as well. Today the Michelberger team is running the renowned restaurant Ora , they are producing the most sought after coconut water the 'Fountain of Youth' , and are practicing regenerative agriculture at their Farm in Spreewald . Michelberger is an experiment, a playground that is never meant to be finished or completed, but meant to create new ways for people to connect. Today I asked Nadine about Berlin in the late 90’s, how the idea of Michelberger came to be, and why we see more and more restaurants in Berlin working with local producers and farmers from the Brandenburg area. In 2019 Jenny Saft turned 32. With no partner and no desire to have kids anytime soon she decided to freeze her eggs. But the issues started to arise even before she found a fertility clinic. Long story short, this experience encouraged her to kick off her own startup called Apryl. According to Apryl, in Germany over 50% of women with academic education do not have kids at age of 35. And it's been Jenny’s mission to educate companies on the huge social challenges infertility may bring.
