Send us a text Good luck to anyone who had a birthday on Oct 2-Supermoon Day. Beams from the Bucks. Dave reviews a Wash Post article showing that people who are sedentary ten hours a day have a statistically higher chance of getting dementia, heart disease, and other illnesses. The article refers to the JAMA source. Speaking of illnesses, Del is recovering from what he calls a UVF- and Unknown Viral Fenomenon, Dave reminds him the last word begins with a P as in phenomenon. The Bucks gloat over their assertion in their June 29, 2021 episode that NFTs were all smoke and mirrors. Listen and weep, NFT holders. According to Business Insider, most are now worth zero. The auction held by Buck guest Jean-Luc Montois in France has been a resounding success , garnering 5-6 times more than estimates. Congrats, J-L. Thanks for the info, Paul. Bucks name earthworm the bug of the month even though it isn't a bug. Dave gets a terrible haircut and offers a Public Service Announcement. Dave visits the National Aviary and the Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum, both in Pittsburgh. Both highly recommended. Send us a text Tahoe Toogee, featured in our last episode, was a huge hit. Folks want to hear more from Toogee. Who else knew a bear could decide how many cubs she would bear? Dave announces an auction of the art collection of Jean-Luc Montois. Dave interviewed him in Episode 141 . Take a look at his collection HERE . It is amazing. Del recounts being a witness to a low speed fender bender that probably resulted in a total loss to one car and a quadrupling of the driver's insurance rates. Florida strikes again. Del learns about Lemierre Syndrome, a rare disease among young people. Bucks discuss Achilles tendon injuries of Aaron Rodgers and Andrew McCutchen [who is a Pirate, not a Steeler. Duh]. More on Achilles lore HERE. Del moans as inflation hits the cigar world, forcing him to spend his money on actual food instead. Dave mentions Walk the Blue Fields , a collection by Claire Keegan. 3 stars. Probably more if you space some time gaps between the stories. Last story the best. Send us a text The Bucks get educated by Toogee Sielsch, probably the world's leading authority on urbanized black bears. Tahoe Toogee, as he's called, has lived in the Tahoe area for forty years and has participated in hundreds of active bear evictions/aversions. He also has over a thousand hours of training in rehabbing rescued black bears. Toogee has been featured in a BBC wildlife documentary, an NPR podcast, and was the field guide for Corey Arnold, a National Geographic photographer working on a story about urbanized wildlife published in the July 2022 issue of Nat Geo . Toogee highly recommends bearwise.org as a source for learning about co-existing with black bears. Toogee also filmed this video of a black bear behaving much like an Old Buck slipping into nap time. Send us a text The Bucks welcome back Bridey Thelen-Heidel and Bruce Rettig, two Lake Tahoe authors who shared their thoughts on their books with us early in the year. If you want to hear the original interviews, Bridey was episode 118 and Bruce was episode 125 . Bridey talked about the off-Broadway show in which she performed and also gave us the good news that her book, tentatively titled Bright Eyes, will be published August 27, 2024. You can check out her work at her blog, Bright Eyes. Bridey's day job is teaching high school English and she has had Bruce's three children as students. Bruce has received numerous awards for his memoir, Refraction . While still busy promoting Refraction and doing his day job as a graphic designer, Bruce has begun working on his next project, which will actually be a trilogy. We brought up the notorious Hank the Tank, a female bear that has been terrorizing Tahoe and Bridey related that a bear just broke into her garage and chugged down the oat milk in the fridge. She had to call Tahoe Toogee to bear-proof her house. We're hoping to have Toogee on as a guest soon. Bruce provided a video of a bear cub rescue he performed a few years ago. We can bearly wait to have Bridey and Bruce back again. Thanks to the both for revisiting the Bucks. Bucks apparently lose their Vintage Vixen copyright battle according to VV1. We're still first in our minds. Dave takes on a suitcase combination lock and loses. But his wife wins so all is well. RIP Robbie Robertson, Canadian singer-songwriter extrordinaire with The Band. Music from Big Pink was a landmark album. Listen to The Weight from their documentary The Last Waltz . It doesn't get any better than this. Several listeners claim to have seen aliens, know aliens or perhaps be aliens. Dave suggests trees may be aliens and then learns somebody else already thought the same thing . Dave rents About My Father , unfortunately a very unfunny movie. Watch the trailer, it's better than the movie. Del and Dave see Oppenheimer and both love it. Spectacular performances, so many shades of gray. Go see it! Del leads Dave to believe he rides his bike naked. Not a visual you want to remember. Dave offers a Public Service Announcement on the dangers of leaping before you look. Send us a text Met Marie, an interesting person who works at Nyt restaurant in Tromsø. Made us great omelets, talked about her life, her father who is an ethnic Sami [indigenous people], and lives in North Cape/ Nordkapp , the northernmost point of continental Europe. Spectacular pizza at Casa Inferno in Tromsø. Definitely top three all-time. Bodø [pop. 50,000] is where the U2 spy planes refueled. Short flight to Svolvaer in the Lofoten Island s [pop. 4700]. Dave almost gets stuck at the airport. A kind woman saves the day. Three nights in Svolvaer, a kickoff place for sailing, climbing, kayaking, hiking. Did an evening sail with Captain Kenneth. Got to Henningsvaer , an even smaller fishing village with a pop. of 470. Flew to Bergen , a city of 470,000. Lush, lots of green space, rains 239 days a year. Yes, it rained on us every day but all was good. As a bartender told us, there is no bad weather, only bad clothes. Fortunately, we had good clothes. Bergen's Kunstall had a temporary Edvard Munch exhibit. Rode the Bergen-Oslo railway. Beautiful scenery, nice elevation gain, then we hit a moose and things went downhill in more ways than one.. At Radisson airport, sat next to a couple from Australia for dinner. Recognized us from the train station in Oslo. They were off to Spain to meet up with other friends. Good laughs. Flew to Brussels with one night layover there, then Icelandair to Reykjavik and then on to JFK with 10 pm landing. NY cab drivers are not like the ones in Norway. Next day, home to Florida. Send us a text Dave flies from Brussels to Oslo via Helsinki and takes a train into town where he crashes at the hotel after a 9pm dinner. They didn't tell him a band was setting up and playing from 10 pm to 3 am, possibly outside his door. The next morning it is back to the train station for a 6.5 hour ride to Trondheim. Train ride was beautiful, gaining elevation to cross the mountain range and the back down to sea level in Trondheim. From Trondheim, Dave boards the Hurtigruten Polarlys running up and down the coast. They pass the Arctic Circle and celebrate with hot rum and fish soup doled out by the captain, followed by ice water on the head ceremony the next morning. During a stop at Bodø, Dave does an excursion that includes a stop at Saltstraumen , the world's strongest tidal current. The ship passes through Trollfjorden, a very narrow fjord. Amazing. Dave disembarks after two nights at Tromsø, where the ship almost leaves with his luggage still onboard. He takes the Fjellheisen cable car for a spectacular view of the city. Send us a text Paul Tregouet, another St. Omer angel, pinch hits for an under-the-weather Dave and delivers a very personal and bittersweet set of interviews at Mary Meaney's house with several of the Ukrainian women who fled with their children to France when the war began. Yulia is an accountant and lawyer, Olga is an accountant, and Dasha is a journalist and media creator. They talk about the hurdles they faced in being uprooted from their professions and communities and learning to adapt to living in a different country and culture. They feel fortunate for the support they have received but face an uncertain future. As one said, "We have no plans, only hope." They find it impossible to believe it is happening to them and ask how the listeners would feel if it happened to them. Olga talks about when she was a girl and talked to men who fought in WW2 and said they never watched war movies because they weren't real. She uses words like cruel, dirty, unfair, inhuman, dehumanizing to describe the war. She closes by saying, "You couldn't think it would happen to you." Thank you, Paul. Joining Phoenix were Roland Bartetzko, a logistics expert supplying medics with needed medical supplies, and Paul Tregouet in France, who maintains the front end of the supply chain. This was our most widely downloaded episode, with listeners in 39 countries. #123 with Laura Hayes of World Central Kitchen, who helps mobilize chefs around the world to serve hot, healthy meals to victims of disasters around the world. WCK under Chef José Andrés has served over 250 million meals since 2010. Laura also discussed a couple of her award-winning stories she’s written as well as a stint teaching English in Japan. Looking forward, there is the upcoming episode with Bruce Rettig next week discussing his book Refraction about his college summers in the ‘80s working above the Arctic circle for a maritime company ferrying equipment for the Alaska pipeline. Bring your winter jacket. We will be interviewing some tough Ukrainian women in St-Omer and two very smart Ukrainian students in France. We are negotiating wit two other folks, a vixen and a buck, to drop in with their occasional stories. You won’t be disappointed. We close the show today with Cap’n Jim, who tells us about a stop at Vanuatu on his second circumnavigation with his 55-foot catamaran Outremer. Send us a text We interview Laura Hayes, who works for World Central Kitchen, the organization founded in 2010 by Chef José Andrés to provide meals in the wake of the earthquake in Haiti and soon expanded to cover natural disasters globally. Since then, WCK has served over 250 million meals around the world, including 200 million in Ukraine, arriving there Feb. 24, 2022. They served 15,000 meals in nearby Fort Myers after Hurricane Ian devastated the area. Presently, they are also feeding earthquake victims in Turkey and Syria, where over 50,000 people have died. Laura also talks about what she accomplished in her previous jobs prior to coming to WCK, including journalism awards she's won along the way. Read some of her articles here. Send us a text The Bucks are fortunate to be able to interview "Phoenix," a frontline Doctor/Medic in Ukraine who is presently recovering from wounds sustained during a recovery operation. It's a powerful story of the determination of the Ukrainian people in defending their country and their way of life against the Russian aggressors. Phoenix has had to watch good friends die while saving the lives of as many soldiers as he could. Joining Phoenix are Paul Tregouet in France who is at the beginning of the supply chain providing medical supplies to the Ukraine forces and Roland Bartetzko who manages the logistics of getting supplies from the border to the battlefields where they are needed most. Thanks to Roland for working out the logistics of our interview and thanks to Paul for connecting us with real people making a difference in the fight for Ukraine. To donate much-needed medical supplies to the front lines in Ukraine, Paul has set up this Amazon-France website, where you will find a prioritized wishlist. Yes, it's in French but you click in all the same places to complete your order. In the shipping section, be sure to click on the Tomasz address . Otherwise it will end up at your doorstep. Send us a text In our continuing effort to look at the personal stories of hope coming out of the war in Ukraine, the Bucks are proud to interview Mary Meaney and Annie Tregouet, two residents of St.-Omer, France who are among the many townspeople of this beautiful village who have opened their hearts and homes to over 500 Ukrainian refugees. Mary has spearheaded this all-volunteer effort simply because she wanted to do more than watch the tragedy of Ukraine on TV. She wanted to make a real difference and she did. Her whole story is very powerful and is more than we can cover in 30 minutes. Annie has been instrumental in having the adult refugees learn French through intensive courses. Annie and her husband Paul are also instrumental in getting much-needed medical supplies to to Ukrainian combatants. This is the website for Mary's charity in St-Omer. It's not in English but we wanted you to see it. MORE IMPORTANTLY FOR YOU, their US affiliate is Remember Us , a 501(c)(3) non-profit, to which you can donate directly to help Ukrainian refugees. That's rememberus.org. To learn more about how Mary worked with Imperial College London to develop a blueprint for other communities to use in setting up similar programs, use this link. To donate much-needed medical supplies to the front lines in Ukraine, go to this Amazon-France website, where you will find a prioritized wishlist. Yes, it's in French but you click in all the same places to complete your order. In the shipping section, be sure to click on the Tomasz address . Otherwise it will end up at your doorstep. Finally, if you want to read more about this amazing and ongoing success story in Mary's own words, send a note to buckstwoold@gmail.com and we'll send you a presentation she made to Imperial College London. Sorry, we don't yet have the ability to hang it on our website. Quite a story, don't you think? Tell us what you think. And please forward this podcast to anyone you know who wants to support and learn more about the brave Ukrainian refugees and how a few people were able to make such a difference in their lives because they cared and because they stood up and did something about it. Send us a text Ranger Rick sent us some background info on Buckminster Fuller , who apparently invented a lot of words when he wasn’t designing geodesic homes or Dymaxions. https://ade3.medium.com/three-words-invented-by-buckminster-fuller-d8002645226d Bridey Thelen-Heidel, who you heard two weeks ago, just announced she has been selected to read her works on Listen to Your Mother , which is playing just a block off Broadway. Yes, the Big Apple! More great news for Bridey. https://listentoyourmothershow.com We got a voice message from VV#1, who explains to Del that the mer in mermaid is French, meaning sea. Mystery solved. Further, she gives him the bad news that TMB is already in use, meaning text me back . She suggests TMBS. You get the idea. Dave stumps Del with an object that’s part of a larger object. The answer is the earth’s inner core. According to USA Today and other news outlets less rigorous than TOB, the core has stopped spinning and is reversing direction. This was a misunderstanding of a scientific article that said the rotation rate was slowing, which could shave up to one millisecond off our year. A shout out to good friend Joel. Dave had breakfast with him today to wish him farewellas he sells his winter place in FL and is looking at the sunny CA desert as his new winter stomping grounds. Met him here in FL when he joined Dave’s writers’ group. It was clear early on that he was a more gifted writer than the rest of us. When that group broke up, he and I and our friend Laura [also at breakfast] met from time to time to critique each other’s work and have a never-ending lunch afterward. Dave calls Joel and Laura his adopted bro and sis. Good luck to you Joel, as you ride into the sunset. We’ll miss you Sea Stories with Cap’n Jim Dave met Jim a couple years ago and being an engineer, enjoyed his bridge-building stories. inevitably Jim would dredge up sailing and flying stories from his past that were far more interesting. Jim has promised to come back and share his stories with us. Next week another amazing story about people helping Ukrainian refugees. Closing music courtesy of Gabriel Records in Nashville. Pretty dazzling performance for a 9-year old playing from memory. Send us a text Bucks share some of the terrific feedback on Bridey Thelen-Heidel's story We Owned the Night from her upcoming memoir , Bright Eyes. The response was dazzling and we plan to have more author interviews in the future. Bucks are wishing Bridey the best as she navigates the challenging route to publication. A listener in Switzerland sends a news story saying the Ukrainians are, in fact, using trucks to shoot down drones, much as Del's suggestion in Episode 117. Ahead of the curve once more. Del resorts to counting stars to stump Dave while Dave stumps the starstruck Del on Everything Everywhere All At Once , a spectacular feast for the senses. Del inadvertently discovers the rabbit hole known as YouTube [here since 2005] and fritters away hours of his life he will never get back. Dave steers him away from TikTok, now a formally-designated addiction. As Del says, "There is no end..." Del is disgusted by partially- frozen eggs he finds in his refrigerator. He eats them anyway. Consider this your Public Safety Announcement for the week. Del longs to invent a new word but settles for a new texting shortcut : TMB. This is particularly appropriate when commenting on the words spilling out of the mouth of a politician. Dave dig out his pickle ball paddle in search of new body parts to injure. Del sees get-well cards in his future. Science tells us how to skip stones and the Bucks nod the antlers to rockers we've lost recently-Christine McVie of Fleetwood Mac, guitarist extrordinaire Jeff Beck, and David Crosby of the Byrds, CSN, and CSNY. Upcoming episodes include sea stories from Cap'n Jim and an interview with members of a French village that has taken in hundreds of Ukrainian refugees. Dave plugs his monthly column in the OLLI- Ringling College newsletter. His assignment was new year's resolutions so he wrote about artificial intelligence. A stretch but did he pull it off? Send us a text Got our 2022 stats from Buzzsprout this week. Seems we have listeners in eighteen countries. Whudda thunk it! Thanks to all who took a chance. Only 180 countries left before we conquer the world. Del and Dave have mini-rants on doctors and dentists. Nothing new here, just old guys whining again. Dave discusses linking up with a French fellow he met on LinkedIn who shared how his community is helping Ukrainian refugees who have relocated there. We hope to do an episode on this in the next few weeks. Long live Ukraine. California goes from drought to flood. Here one young buck's experience. Del has a solution for dealing with those who have left top secret documents lying around the coffee shop. Dave is perplexed. Del postures that houseflies may be aliens because they have a lot of eyes. Dave is perplexed. Dave finds a friend in Jon Stewart, who is equally baffled by the British royal family's apparent mission to beat each other up in public. Send us a text Dave reads Del excerpts from three prose poems, one of which was written by a machine. Incredibly, Del correctly guesses the insta-poem written by the grandson of Hal from 2001: A Space Oddity. We wonder how our listeners did on this one. You can read the human-generated poems written by Joshua Weiner and Donna Stonecipher as well as other poems here in Body . Del gives Dave a multiple choice question about the Fabulous Hubcaps , which he answers correctly more or less. It would be a good name for a museum, though. Del engages in a bit of teeth-gnashing over his inability to find anything when he needs it. Dave is little to no help. Maybe Del needs to get som e help from Marie Kondo , the queen of tidying up. As an aside, Dave, after watching the video, feels he could not live in Marie's world. Elon Musk says he will bow to the will of the people and replace himself as CEO of Twitter. Del lets it slip that he is on the short list. Definitely an improvement. Dave pays tribute to his cousin Pat, who recently died of a brain aneurysm. Send us a text Del continues to rally from his bout with covid. His sense of taste has still not returned. Does that make him tasteless? Listeners seemed to enjoy last week's AI segment on bot-writing. We love to get those Letters From Afar so let us know what you think. As Del appears intrigued by GRAVITY, Dave had the bot create a prose poem of sorts on the subject. Here's what we got in four seconds: Gravity is a force that binds us all together. It is a force that is ever-present, yet often overlooked. It is a force that keeps us grounded, and yet allows us to reach for the stars. It is a force that can be both a blessing and a curse. It can keep us safe and secure, but can also be a hindrance when we want to explore the unknown. Gravity is a reminder that we are all connected, and that no matter how far we… It won't win a Pulitzer but not bad for four seconds. Warning: it will only get smarter. Del's beef with gravity is reflected in his naked posing in front of the bathroom mirror, clutching his pectorals and upon releasing them, watching gravity sag them toward the center of the earth. Talk bout tasteless! Sorry if this image is now burned into your brain. NFT available soon. https://www.istockphoto.com/photo/senior-man-with-headphones-naked-shoulders-belly-and-chest-gm157641773-14178053 SBF, wunderfraudkid, asks to be let out of jail because he's Vegan. Send us a text Del the trouper shows up while still positive with Covid and thanks our loyal listeners for their patience and well wishes. He's presently overdosing on placebos, hoping something will work. We wonders why water tastes funny. Any clues? Dave stumps Del on an emerald recovered from the Atocha, which sank in 1622. Four hundred years later, it was auctioned off to support the Ukrainian people. Del quizzes Dave on an event that happened 75 years ago and changed the world-the invention of the semiconductor. Speaking of which... Dave introduces Del to ChatGPT, a software product developed by OpenAI. It can write a story or a poem, or answer just about any question you ask it. This is the future of artificial intelligence. You can, if you're smarter than Dave, download the software and begin using it. Or, you can play with their online demo version , which Dave used to create poetry and short essays. Play with the demo version yourself; you'll be amazed. It's free to sign up and easy to use the demo. Del followed up with a bicycle riddle, which you can find here. Dave predicts the bike will move forward but you need to be a subscriber to get the answer. Del will report on his live experiment next time. Send us a text Del succumbs to Covid 19 but feels the show must go on, trouper that he is. Yuks aside, Del gives a graphic description of his symptoms and issues an earnest warning to take Covid seriously. Send him some love, or at least an email, to buckstwoold@gmail.com. Del is stumped again by Dave's obtuse references to Mauna Loa . Are his solutions too hard? Dave talks about dreams-what do they really mean. Del likens them to a flushing of the mind's debris. Who dreams about Charles Barkley and pie? Del reveals some CIA-like insider information he got regarding the Dems' 2024 presidential candidate. No joke. Well, maybe a joke. You decide. A friend relates a story of unexpected help from the other side, reminding us we're all people in the end. Finally, a new chapter on the Ukrainian family that found their way to the US. Del and Dave stump each other on Stump the Buck. Dave flags the 77" of snow in Buffalo while Del stumps Dave on an impending rail strike . Del also relates his time "riding the rails." Bucks forecast this on June 9, 2021 episode [sort of]. Go back and listen, send us your thoughts. Del ups the ante as he quizzes Dave about an unjustly labeled mythical creature that roams the Himalayas. Del would like to rename the abominable snowman the little hairy mountain fairy . Your thoughts? Del ponders the meaning of Thanksgiving, turkey-eating, and whether a little man in a boat who has only smelly fish to eat is celebrating Thanksgiving. Dave uncovers a trend in southwest Pennsylvania to have frittatas instead of turkey. Dave gives a book report on A Series of Fortunate Events: Chance and the Making of the Planet, Life, and You by Sean B. Carroll. Excellent opening on the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs and paved the way for the evolution of man. Middle gets a bit bogged down in genetics, base pairs, lucky and unlucky mutations; well-written but down the rabbit hole t time. Ending is an excellent compilation of quotes from various "famous people" that the author skillfully weaves into a discussion interview. 3.5 stars. Bucks celebrate the end of mid-term elections. Can we get back to normal, people? Scientists synthesize an alloy previously found only on asteroids. Could reduce our reliance on Chinese rare earth elements used in magnets, electronic, and optics. This is good news for our grandchildren. Del sort of accuses Dave of being a hoarder or maybe Dave admits it. Dave watched Weird: The Al Yankovic Story . He didn't love it but you can watch it for free on the Roku channel. Send us a text Believe it or not, we made it to 100 episodes. Not bad for what started out as coffee banter. Wait, that's still what it is except nearly a million people [or slightly fewer] are listening in. Based on our download statistics, we are in the top 25% nationally and top 10% globally. What does that mean? It means there are a ton of podcasts out there. Enough of that. More importantly, we like to talk about podcast quality and the episodes we [or you] liked best. So here goes: The interview with Judge Jones [Episode 84] drew the most downloads as a lot of people found his story very fascinating. We ,liked it a lot, too. One of our best. We also enjoyed our interviews with Gene, Judith, Terry, John, and Dr. Vito. Our Ukraine stories [beginning with Episode 72] struck a chord with viewers who heard of the efforts of one family of refugees to make it o the US. Unexpectedly, listeners contributed thousands of dollars to the family and to Ukrainian relief efforts. Thanks, folks. The Ice episode [#68] was a crowd favorite as we read Holly's short story and discussed the Dead Guy Festival. Our discussion of Miss Neff, one of our teachers who made a difference, was another big hit. Listen to Season2 Episode 2 [1/14/2021] and then hug a teacher. Del put Normalville on the map in Season 2 Episode 35. Or they put us on the map, more likely. Way back in Episode 4 [Dec, 2020] Del warned the world about the spotted lantern fly ahead of CBS and all the other news outlets that hooked onto the story later. Before that he told us how he ate ants. Dave's interview with his grandsons was another classic [Season 2 Episode 15] much enjoyed by all his relatives. No list would be complete without including Loser Lotto, beginning way back in Episode 2 and continuing until Del euthanized it. Del's podcast card tricks have never been matched nor duplicated. And he's still waiting for the invite from Elon to go to Mars. We made our ten predictions for the future and we're counting on Ranger Rick to keep score for us. Until then, we can only say it has been an exercise in friendship and love. Visit or call an old friend and say hello. Make a new friend. You'll never regret it. Public Safety Announcement-do not wear cargo shorts in the kitchen. Dave gives four stars to the book, The Anomaly by Herve' Le Tellier. What is real, anyway. Dave pans Night Sky streaming on Amazon. Oscar-winning actors Sissy Spacek and J.K. Simmons are wasted in this poorly-written, meandering story of mysterious vessels that transport one to another star system. Send us a text Del has a fish story and he's even correct as it turns out. What's in that can of tuna fish anyway? The Bucks go quasi-intellectual as Del reviews The Warrior's Apprentice by Lois McMaster Bujold. This is sci-fi fantasy series about Miles Vorkosigan, a very smart guy who sometimes does dumb things. A future buck, it seems. Dave reviews Transatlantic by Colum McCann , which weaves together three historical events with real and fictional characters. It covers the 1919 transatlantic flight by Alcock and Brown, Frederick Douglass' 1845 lecture tour of Ireland, and Sen. George Mitchell's pivotal role in the 1998 peace accord for the "Troubles" in N. Ireland and beyond. Send us a text The Bucks wonder about the Winter Olympics. Is anybody watching? What are the good sports? is figure skating a sport or a popularity contest? WHAT ABOUT THIS BUCK? There was also a Superbowl. Despite the Bucks rooting for Cincy, the Rams pulled it out near the end. Then there was the geriatric halftime show. Snoop Dog had the best outfit . Larry David was Larry David and maybe's he's guessing right this time. And, of course, Scarlett Johansson did an Alexa commercial that may or may not have poked fun at itself. Del watched Star Wars XXXVVIII-part 7 on another channel. Del learns the hard way that plastic ware and microwaves don't mix . He then rambles on about global tilting and recycled nuts. Send us a text Del warns Dave-too late- about the hazards of handling a heavy mattress in a box. JB from DC asks the Bucks if he should be worried about his wife asking what he wants his obituary to say. As usual, our advice is probably useless. Rocky, an astute listener allegedly from Frostbite Falls, MN uses augury in a sentence. Buckworthy for sure. Rocky also recommends Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett. Most importantly, he notes that Del constantly interrupts Dave, causing Del to interrupt Dave's reading of Rocky's letter. Why is it called a spelling BEE ? We might know. Del gets hypnotized by a tree, out of the visual analog of the TOB podcast. Of course, this reminds Dave of Del's dumpster diving for vacuum cleaners. What is WORDLE ? Dave explains. You'll like it. Send us a text Dave reads an essay from the book, DAILY LIFE IN THE 1960S COUNTERCULTURE by Jim Willis. The war and the violence associated with protests of it came at great personal cost to many American families. This book looks those social and cultural changes, examining such topics as the sexual revolution; recreational drug culture; the roles of film, television, and music; and more. The Bucks inadvertently invent a cure for insomnia as more and more listeners report we put them to sleep. While this was not our initial goal, we are happy to provide this public service. We must be saving the good stuff for the end. Speaking of sleep deprivation, Dave laments building his annual sleep debt watching the NCAA Mens Basketball Tournament, the best sports event on TV. He particularly enjoys Commentator and ex-player Charles Barkley, the straightest in-your-face, back-to-basics purveyor of basketball theory and practice. The Bucks reminisce on their own playing days in high school and how the only thing that prevented them from being superstars was height, speed, jumping ability, ball handling, good vision, and talent. OK, it was more than one thing. And Dave picks Gonzaga. Del expounds upon global franchising opportunities for the Two Old Bucks concept. Dave doesn't know what a stoat is but he calls Del a bloke, which may or may not be a compliment. Bucks go down the rabbit hole on biking vs. cycling, useful products like coffee-scented chain lube, roadie snobbishness, and a glimpse at "The Rules" of cycling. More on the latter in a future episode. Del leads a consumer awareness symposium, a.k.a. how to screw the customer. Madison Avenue is not amused. Next come the modern cartridge razors that have evolved to five or six blades with no marketing limits in sight. Dave reviews Pop. 485; Meeting Your Neighbors One Siren at a Time by Michael Perry. Perry, a nurse, moves back to the town where he grew up in rural Wisconsin and joins the volunteer fire department as an EMT in order to shed his outsider image and reconnect with his past. Should be easy to find, right? Maybe. Maybe not. Dave reviews an adventure essay by Kim Cross about two cyclists traveling in opposite directions across Europe and Asia. He's struck by the poetic beauty of the writing and the majesty of the epic journeys of an American and a Brit. What are the chances these two strangers would meet at a desert cafe at the edge of nowhere? But that's not even the best part. Dave declares it the best adventure essay since Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer. You can read her story here . If you like it, she also has a book out-WHAT STANDS IN A STORM. Del once again almost reviews The Road to Gandolfo, an offbeat book by author Robert Ludlum writing as Michael Shepherd. It could be humorous, we're not sure since Del doesn't really tell us the plot or anything else about the book. The moral according to Del seems to be that once you're successful you can do anything you want. Just sayin.... We wrap it up with words of wisdom from Jackie Kennedy that Dave has had pasted in his folio for 20 years. Send us a text The Drinking Contest is an essay -a true story- Dave wrote and published ~25 years ago about something that happened ~60 years ago. The contestants were Danny, Tom, and Jim; Dave wisely decided to watch. Tom and Jim have both read the story and vouch for its accuracy. We hope you enjoy it; let us know at buckstwoold@gmail.com. Send us a text Del plumbs the depth of his brain for words of wisdom learned along the way, especially fatherly advice he received as a dumb young buck. Dave, when put on the spot, can only come up with John Lennon and Mick Jagger lyrics. Del chides him for not remembering the words of a bunch of dead Greek guys. Upon further reflection , they share some father and son episodes from the distant past. Dave tells his story of visiting Russia in 1992 on tungsten business. After an endless string of visits with bureaucrats during the day and vodka dinners with them every night in Moscow, he flies to the tungsten plant in Nalchik, a far different world in the Caucasus mountain. He is shadowed by a man who may or may not be a KGB agent. Why does he like this guy? Del expounds on the miracle of DAP-the goo, not the handshake. Dave somehow manages to stay awake. Del then tops himself by worrying about how they get the perfect black grill stripes on burgers on TV ads. Finally, and thankfully, he challenges listeners to tell us what keeps them up at night. In a Letter from Afar, Bernd from Germany feels the Konik ponies in central Florida cannot be "normal," i.e. real. He then extols the virtues of the "special cows" in the Czech Republic bred to walk level on hillsides. Really, Bernd? Really? Email us at buckstwoold@gmail.com. Send us a text [Explicit Warning] In this episode, Del discusses the importance of what he calls book buddies, people who can recommend books to a friend that the friend might not normally read otherwise. During the discussion, the following books are touched upon: I AM THE MESSENGER and THE BOOK THIEF by Marcus Zusak, IN THE GARDEN OF THE BEAST by Erik Larsen, and THE BARTENDER'S TALE by Ivan Doig. Dave tells another story about Gene, already famous for his exploding car mishap. Teenager Gene is smitten by sweet Mary Jones but can't get past second base. Her father hires Gene and Dave for some part-time farm work. Pain and suffering ensue. A life lesson is learned. Dave finally gets to talk about Miss Neff, his all-time favorite teacher, and how he learned much more than English from her. Del follows up with a discussion on his favorite, Mr. Cochenour. Del tells a bicycling story or is it a cow story. Remember, this is the mind that created the now-defunct Loser Lotto. We get a letter from Superman and learn that even he makes mistakes. Special thanks to Judy, Susan, Peggy, Toniann, Larry, and Tom for their contributions to the Miss Neff tribute. Send us a text Del attempts to describe the proper usage for the words always and never. " Attempts" is the operative word here. How do you use these words? Dave has a flat tire on his bike the last week of 2020 after no flats all year. But there is a happy ending. A surprise ending? You decide. Note that he says 2021 the first time but it is really 2020. Remember, he's old. Del reflects on his years hiding in the African bush spent observing the interplay between predator and prey, which turns out to be much like human behavior. He further dazzles us with his fluency in Swahili, Zulu, and Saswatzi. Or maybe he is making it all up, we don't know. Dave samples shark meat in Iceland which has been buried to rot and then hung up to attract flies for nine months. A clear contender for Grossest Story of 2021. Even grosser, he likes it. Del possibly gives another of his famous lightning book reviews. Pay attention. Dave finds we have a listener in West Lake Stevens, triggering a story about a visit to the San Juan Islands. Del foolishly assumes they are off the coast of Puerto Rico. So, where are they? There might be other stuff on this episode but we uploaded it a whole twenty minutes ago and who can remember anything that long? Send us a text The Bucks reflect on 2020 TOB highlights and review the segments nominated in the various award categories. The first category is Most Controversial Topic and the segment that dominated all others in the nominations was Loser Lotto. After a massive dropoff in listenership, Del mercifully euthanized it, sparing us further confusion in 2021. The two nominees for Most Surprising Subculture are the Konik ponies [see polishponyfl.com] of central Florida and the Tidycat jug repurposement. The Bucks continue to be astounded by the enthusiasm and resourcefulness of the "Juggers." In the category, Most Obvious Gender Bias, the overwhelming favorite was the failure by the Bucks during the Bright Side of Covid segment to note that women would save time and money on makeup as all you needed to do was paint your eyes. We received countless letters from female listeners on this one, with the most heartfelt letters coming from Judith and Pat. The Grossest Story category nominees are both Del's, understandably. Del Eating Ants was gross, for sure, but the Lanternfly story triggered a multitude of post-apocolyptic nightmares. One listener from Lunenburg is reportedly still hiding under the bed. The Dumbest Young Buck Stunt has two strong nominees, this time involving Dave's on-the-road adventures. It will be a close vote between Hitchhiking with Criminals and Blowing Up the Plymouth. Dave tried to steer today's young bucks away from both of these exploits. Del garnered another uncontested nomination for The Strangest Book Review. You had to pay attention or you missed his artful story within a story. In the Most Empathetic Listener category, the runaway favorite seems to be Claire from Chicago. Her letter practically made us shed our velvet [look it up]. Go, Claire! Get your votes in. Vote early and vote often as Claire's old mayor used to say. You can even write-in a candidate for any of the categories. Send it to buckstwoold@gmail.com. Otherwise, Dave finds another way he and Del are similar and the Bucks take a peek at 2021. Send us a text Del commandeers the mic for a surprise opening. Astute listener Lucy from Chester, PA teaches us about Calming Spray for Cats as Del wonders if you can buy it for people. Del gives another lightning book review, discussing All The Light You Cannot See. We recognize two Russian heroes [in our minds, at least] who saved the world from thermonuclear destruction. Continuing with the Russia theme, Dave discusses his adventures traveling on the Trans Siberian Railway from Beijing to Moscow. There is brief nudity involved but thankfully this podcast is audio-only. Del drives the final nails into the coffin holding Loser Lotto [we hope]. Send us a text Hello, this is old buck Dave introducing a special TOB episode, otherwise known as episode 7. This episode was actually a test of using zoom audio for remote interviews so Del and I were winging it from separate locations as opposed to following our usual in-person winging it program format. While I like to say there is no failure in science, Del’s audio, in particular, is decidedly sub-par so we apologize for that. On the bright side, we did manage to generate a half-hour of meanderings on ghosts, aliens, bad teachers, bad students, and bad hitch-hiking that we hope you find interesting. Dave, who doesn't believe in ghosts, tells his own ghost story that took place in Germany several years ago while Del contemplates alien invasions and [incredibly] provides a reasonable explanation for Dave's apparition. We talk about bad teachers and bad students [the latter would be Del] and then Del goes down another rabbit hole wondering why cars have steering wheels. His comment on a driver being able to sprawl across a bench seat triggers a hitchhiking experience Dave had while in college. Don't do this at home...or anywhere. Send us a text Dave tries to unravel the mysteries of Lake Stevens, Washington, and why folks there listen to us. Del examines Komics Kulture and pays homage to a few of his favorites. Dave reviews a documentary about Bing Russell and the Portland Mavericks. We reflect on two men who were among the best at what they did who passed away on December 7- Chuck Yeager and Dick Allen. Del admits that even he doesn't understand Loser Lotto and tearfully bids it adieu. Send us a text Dave talks about the demise of the "authentic hand-painted" Mexican plate and the trauma left behind. Del discusses the funniest book he's ever read but it is unclear whether he actually read the entire book. Dave dives into some neuroscientifically tenuous linkages between perception, reality, and a really bad day on the bike. Listeners continue to beat the Tidy Cat container idea to death in Letters From Afar. Del changes the instructions for Loser Lotto, as if anyone even understands where he's going with this. Send us a text Del talks about his painful episode with the cable company and a hole in the ground so excuse him if he gets a little grouchy. You've all been there. He manages to draw a parallel with a famous line from Cool Hand Luke Dave discovers a fascinating website about Polish [as in the country, not the Shinola] ponies in central Florida. Check out the Polish Pony Society of Central Florida here. In our Kultur Klub segment, Del educates us on the growing infestation of the lanternfly. Learn more from the October 2020 issue of the Smithsonian magazine. Del surprises Dave by telling him they have co-founded the Society for Citizens Representing Alternative Positions. In a unanimous vote, it is decreed that the authors of any letters read "on the air" are automatically inducted into the Society. Four Letters From Afar are chosen from among the thousands we've received thus far. These include one from Slovenia and one from Barking, England [a real place]. And there really is a Normalville where dogs possibly put up the Christmas lights. Once again, Del tries to explain Loser Lotto and changes the rules to make it even more confusing. Send us a text Welcome to Two Old Bucks, the podcast that looks at the world through the cataract-clouded eyes of two lifelong friends. Come on over and have a coffee with us as we laugh at the humor of everyday life, take a few peeks back at the good old days [well, the old days], and try to generally impress each other with our wisdom and knowledge. In this intro, we play a clip from our first raw test recording so you can see how amazed we were that we even got this far. Like Sgt. Pepper, we hope you will enjoy the show. Send us a text In our inaugural episode, we tell you a little about ourselves and how we got here and then move on to our first segment, Things That Make You Say Hmm, where we look at the bright side of Covid-19. Think positive. Wait, scratch that. Our Kultur Klub segment will include a short book review [or two] by Del and an essay Dave wrote on the joys of yoga. In our next segment, 2 Bucks for Your Thoughts, Del will attempt to unravel the mystery behind that plastic car key you get in your junk mail and we'll entertain letters from afar. Finally, Del will explain the Loser Lotto game he developed and how he guarantees you will lose if you play the numbers he gives you. We'd love to get your feedback, pro or con.
