Send us a text What happens when a homeschooling mother of six from Portland finds herself driving Amish families across America? Haley Straw takes us behind the curtain of a culture often misunderstood yet deeply rooted in kindness and community. After relocating to rural Missouri for a fresh start, Haley stumbled into a role as an Amish driver that spanned nine years and countless miles across the country. Her journeys revealed a community far different from the romanticized versions in novels or the simplistic portrayals in media. "They're human," Haley shares, explaining how this revelation transformed her understanding of Amish life. Our conversation explores fascinating aspects of Amish culture, from their remarkable healthcare support system built entirely on community contributions to their "frolics" (work parties) where families gather to accomplish major tasks together. Haley shares heartwarming stories of Amish generosity during crises, explaining how publications connect communities nationwide to help those facing medical bills or other hardships. The episode is peppered with profound Amish proverbs that offer timeless wisdom about kindness and forgiveness. "Forgive and forget instead of resent and remember" and "Kindness when given away keeps coming back" reveal an approach to life centered on moving forward rather than harboring grudges. Haley's most touching story involves driving Amish children who experienced mountains for the first time - a moment of pure wonder that captures the beautiful simplicity of finding joy in new experiences. Haley has documented her unique cultural immersion in her "Tales of an Amish Taxi Driver" series, with a third book in progress. As both a therapist and coach, Michelle shares powerful insights about relationship communication that will transform how you handle conflict. Her simple yet profound advice about responding with curiosity rather than defensiveness provides an immediately applicable tool for deeper connection. Send us a text Holocaust survivor Ben Lesser joins us for a powerful and moving conversation that sheds light on the darkest period of human history. Imagine escaping a Polish ghetto hidden in coal trucks, trusting a stranger with your life, only to embark on a nail-biting journey through enemy lines—this was the reality for Ben and his family. As we explore their harrowing escape to Czechoslovakia, Ben's vivid recollections of bravery amidst constant danger provide a gripping narrative of resilience against all odds. Our dialogue takes a sobering turn as Ben recounts his arrival at Auschwitz, where hope was quickly extinguished by the brutal reality of the Holocaust. Transported in overcrowded cattle cars, Ben's tale reveals the unimaginable conditions and loss, offering a raw look into the human cost of war. Through his experiences, we're reminded of the fragile hopes that were shattered by the Nazi invasion of Hungary and the subsequent horrors that awaited countless families like Ben's. In one of the darkest chapters of human history, Ben's story becomes a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. The brutality and inhumanity he witnessed in Auschwitz and labor camps are contrasted with moments of defiance and solidarity. Through personal acts of sacrifice and courage, Ben not only survived but now shares his story to remind us of the past's lessons. As we reflect on these haunting experiences, we emphasize the importance of kindness and remembrance, urging listeners to ensure such stories are never lost to time. Send us a text When the world seems awash in cynicism, a conversation with someone like Regina Andler can be a beacon of hope. Our heartfelt discussion with the founder of Autumn Ascent Consulting isn't just about the tangibles of business success—it's a deep dive into the soul-enriching principles of kindness and the pivotal role it plays across our professional and private lives. Regina brings her experience to the table, reminding us of the immeasurable value a good consultant or coach can have in guiding us toward our goals, with tales of corporate beginnings and the transformative power of a helping hand. Amidst the laughs and shared memories, including a charming tale involving our pal Steve Gamlin and time management, this episode also dares to tackle the heavier side of humanity. We unravel the fabric of kindness, not as an occasional gesture but as an intrinsic mindset that shapes our interactions and decisions. Personal stories illuminate our discussion, from how Boy Scouts and classic cartoons shaped our early understanding of altruism to the inspiring work done through Beach Bum Philanthropy and Isaiah 58. It's about the deeply rooted desire to lift others up, challenging the sometimes skewed portrayal of kindness in social media landscapes. Our final thoughts resonate with the need for empathy and action toward some of society's most pressing issues, such as homelessness and the struggles faced by the elderly. By debunking myths about homelessness and examining the harsh realities through personal anecdotes and compelling statistics, we underscore the necessity of community involvement. Touching upon proposed legislation for work-life balance and the beautiful difference we can make in the lives of seniors, this episode is an impassioned call to action—a reminder that each of us has the capacity to leave a mark on the world through our kindness. Send us a text Every family has their own special holiday traditions, and today, we're joined by Todd Zimmerman , the imaginative mind behind 'Oliver the Ornament', a series that's found its way into the hearts and holiday rituals of many. Our conversation with Todd is like unwrapping a gift that keeps on giving, revealing how his enchanting tales of kindness, tradition, and family not only adorn the Christmas tree but also weave themselves into the fabric of our lives. Zimmerman's narrative magic extends beyond the festive season, as he tells us about "Oliver Doodle Dandy", a Fourth of July story that sparks a deeper understanding of the holiday in children, and about "Oliver's Day of Kindness", which promotes uplifting values on World Kindness Day. His journey from a spark of an idea to the White House demonstrates the profound power of kindness, and as we chat, it's clear that Zimmerman's stories are more than just tales—they're blueprints for a kinder, more inclusive world. Reflecting on the episode, I'm struck by the warmth and wisdom that Zimmerman shares, particularly through "Oliver Doodle Dandy and the Day of Kindness". The power to elicit change through simple acts of kindness resonates deeply, and it's a message we can all take to heart. Send us a text When the echoes of generosity ripple through a community, they can create waves of change that uplift the lives of countless individuals. That's the essence of the conversation I had with Tukayote Helianthus , a philanthropist whose journey of giving began with a personal commitment to quit smoking and blossomed into the life-changing Operation Water Drop initiative. His narrative, rooted in the values cultivated during his Boy Scout days, reveals how small habit changes can lead to monumental acts of kindness. The crux of our dialogue pivots on confronting the stark realities of poverty, the escalating need for food banks, and how the pandemic has heightened these issues to critical levels. But amidst the challenges, there's a silver lining – the remarkable impact of micro-charities and individual acts of kindness. Tukayote's work, included under the umbrella of the Helianthus Foundation , includes the I Carrying Narcan project and Operation Water Drop , exemplifies how each of us can contribute to the robust safety net our communities so desperately need, proving that no action is too small when it comes to helping others. As we wrap up this heartening episode, a powerful message resonates: be the bolt in the bridge of your community. Each of us has the potential to spark hope and foster connections through simple gestures of kindness. By sharing these stories and encouraging others to act, we amplify the joy of giving and the profound effects it has on both the giver and the receiver. Send us a text As the crisp April air heralds a season of renewal and Second Chance Month , imagine the power of extending that spirit of rejuvenation to those in our midst seeking redemption. On the Kindness Matters podcast, we're joined by the compassionate Kimberley Mansfield , co-founder and director of the De Muniz Legal Clinic , who lights the way for individuals striving to reclaim their place in society post-incarceration. Her narrative is not just one of legal battles, but of humanity's capacity for empathy and the transformative potential of second chances. Together, we peel back the layers of bias to reveal a truth often obscured in the shadows of our criminal justice system. The roads to reintegration are fraught with obstacles that many of us might never have to face, but Kimberly and I tread these paths to uncover the realities for those emerging from behind bars. We challenge the misconceptions that can cripple a fresh start, discussing the surprising statistics surrounding recidivism and the quagmire of digital footprints left by expunged records. Housing, employment, and the restoration of familial bonds are but a few of the hurdles that former inmates overcome, and our conversation shines a spotlight on the tireless advocacy required to support these journeys of reentry. Lastly, we take a moment to focus on the youth who find themselves caught in the web of the legal system. The narrative turns to the profound impact of childhood trauma on developmental trajectories and the stark transition between juvenile and adult correctional institutions. The episode offers a lens into the complexities of maturation within the confines of the legal age of adulthood, and the invaluable role of legal aid in supporting young offenders. Listen as we weave through the heartening tales of resilience and the community's role in binding the wounds inflicted by a punitive system. Do you dread Mondays? Joan speaks about how we each say we would like more kind television and news producing, but given the choice, we choose violence and un-kindness. As we dive further into the notion of kindness, Joan unfolds the inspiring story of baseball legend Mike Veeck, the subject of the new documentary, The Saint of Second Chances. We wrap up our chat with an exploration on the power of small gestures of kindness, love, and respect. Joan, drawing from her experiences, instills in us the power of individual contributions to making the world a better place. Send us a text What happens when a simple act of chalk doodling turns into a full-fledged mission to spread joy during difficult times? Meet my guest, the delightful Laurie Olesen, who used her talent for chalk artistry to brighten up driveways and in turn, lives during the pandemic. A whimsical mushroom, uplifting messages for a hospital-ridden boy, a birthday cake for a party-cancelled little girl - her chalk art repertoire is as diverse as it is heartwarming. The community's response to Laurie’s call for more driveways to spread her art was undeniably overwhelming, earning Laurie the affectionate nickname, the Epic Chalk Lady. As we journey through the ups and downs of her chalk art adventure, we discover the artistic evolution that turned a hobby into a full-time endeavor. Beyond chalk art, she also ventured into rock painting and gnome hunting. Laurie's resilience amid the chalk shortage of 2021 and her discovery of artist's chalk, which allowed for more intricate designs, are testament to her dedication. Her story would be incomplete without the mention of Laurie's husband, whose support for her creative escapades speaks volumes about the power of love and understanding. Finally, as we wrap this episode, we take a moment to reflect on the transformative power of kindness. With over 400 chalk drawings to her credit, all done for free, Laurie exemplifies generosity and selflessness in its purest form. Let her story serve as a reminder of the profound impact of rooting for others and encouraging them to believe in themselves. Send us a text Jill had a happy, healthy 20-year relationship with her college sweetheart, two wonderful kids, and a rescue cat from the Humane Society. They lived in a nice suburban home with a white picket fence and owned a small bar that was rated one of the "Best Mom and Pop" businesses in Tampa Bay. From the outside everything looked "perfect". As Pride Month begins, this episode is a reminder that everyone deserves the same love and respect that you and I expect for ourselves. Jillian was a married mother to two amazing kids when, at the age of 38 she came to finally accept that she was, in fact, a lesbian. Her book, Perfectly Queer: Facing Big Fears, Living Hard Truths, and Loving Myself Fully Out of the Closet is a number one bestseller and tells the story of how an overachieving, "perfect" child finally came to accept her whole truth. Send us a text Recently I reached out to the kindness subreddit asking if anyone had ever been the recipient of or participated in an act of kindness that was so amazing that it changed either their or someone else's life. I got a lot of really great responses, but one stuck out to me. His name was James and his story was simply fantastic. I asked if he would agree to be on my show, but he said no. He was too busy taking care of his wife. I really, really wanted to get his story out there, so I asked if he would allow me to tell it. He agreed! This is the story of James and Jenny Steele. After Jenny received a devastating health diagnosis late in 2019, they received so much support and love from family, friends and complete strangers, James said he needed to find a way to send some of that love and kindness back out into the world.
