Welcome Margaret Nyamumbo, founder of Kahawa 1893 , a Kenyan coffee company, aiming to bring Kenyan coffee to the world in a way that benefits our women farmers. Nyamumbo grew up in Kenya seeing the hard work of coffee farmers, including her family, given very little for their sweat. She tells us 10% or less of coffee profit comes back to the farmers. More disparagingly, women farmers own none of the land and recieve less pay. After traveling to the USA to receive her Harvard MBA, Margaret was called to support her hometown, now understanding the consumer goods market and seeing a shift in specialty coffee. She discusses the rise of conscious consumption and the desire to see equal compensation from farm to cup. She appeared on Shark Tank in 2024 to secure $350,000 in investment with guest shark Emma Grede offering the deal for 8% equity. The QR code on the back of each bag allows consumers to directly tip the farmer making international exchange feeless and seamless. Tune in for a compelling discussion on coffee, business, attracting investors, entering a competitive market, and the influence Kahawa 1893 is making in Kenya! Order your favorite roast here today! We invited two passionate individuals Amy Wheat, Opioid Specialist and Anji Jorstad, Behavioral Health Supervisor from the Snohomish County Human Services . They discuss the impact of their reach in the fentanyl epidemic and homeless crisis. Snohomish is a small community about 40 minutes North of Seattle. Many believe the inner cities are where the darkest tragedies of drug abuse takes place although you will hear differently in today's interview. We asked not only about the drug epidemic, but the caring individuals heavily impacting and changing the way we interact with individuals on the street. From creating an internal group of social workers, and assigning certain police officers to highly affected areas, they are seeing more addicts turn to them for help versus running the other way. SCHS is a state funded resource which many believe have little effect on these communities as we typically consider the government as non caring in today's culture. You will hear stories of their impact, knowledge, education, and long term effects they strive to create in their area. For smaller counties, like Snohomish, rural and less seen, resources can be limited and support can feel sparse. SCHS is a light in the dark. Our interview today shares on the efforts to reduce this lack for those in desperate need. Tune in today to learn more!

"We are in an undeclared state of emergency in US education." Welcome Tommy Shultz, the CEO for American Federation for Children. The AFC is the largest school choice advocacy group in the USA. Their mission is to bring better educational opportunities to mainly low income families by changing laws and becoming political aggressive so these children can escape the generational poverty and crime they are doomed into. The country currently employs a severely outdated educational system with pedagogies do not support educating children equally. Children born in less privileged counties or zip codes are right away put into a public school system with no resources or attention to individual needs. School choice, aka the AFC, are educating parents and creating more pathways where they can access state allocated money to help them offer children homeschooling, private school, private tutoring, relocating to a different school, commuter options ect. Forbes just commented in 2025 that, "The gloom overshadowing K-12 schools begins with declining test scores." We just saw the National Assessment of Educational Progress release, "Average scores for age 9 students in 2022 declined 5 points in reading and 7 points in mathematics compared to 2020. This is the largest average score decline in reading since 1990, and the first ever score decline in mathematics." Tune into this powerful conversation! We hope it encourages parents to turn their attention towards AFC's efforts, school choice in your state and to become active in this conversation.

Welcome Dr. Linda Thornton to The Mark Howley Show! Tune in today for this inspiring TRUE story! Dr. Thornton is the first female trained black prosthodontist (aka she is an expert in dentures) and a retired Lieutenant Colonel in the US Army Dental Corps. She grew up in a poor family in New Jersey as the youngest of five girls. Her father was determined to educate his daughters and support them in becoming doctors. Their story feels oddly similar to the infamous tennis athletes of the Williams sisters. To raise funds for college, the family started a band The Thornton Sisters which became so successful they sang alongside The Supremes. Her father worked many jobs like ditch digging that led to many of the connections landing them gigs in prestigious universities. Her mother did all the costume creation and managed the entire family while working. All five of the sisters indeed became physicians and their story inspired a book, The Ditchdigger's Daughters later turned into a movie starring Carl Lumbly who was cast as their father. They appeared on the Oprah show as a result of their fame as their story gained more traction. Dr. Thornton is currently on the staff of Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) where she is in the process of starting a business DanTass (named after her parents) to help students through the expensive process of becoming a doctor. Her joy for life, her passion for dentistry and incredible personality captivated us from the beginning. Tune in today for this inspiring TRUE story.

You wouldn't think that helping the homeless would ever lead you to wearing a bulletproof vest would you? Let's rewind for a moment. Welcome Elvis Summers the founder and CEO of Tiny House Project Emergency Shelters, a Non-Profit 501(c)(3) Corporation that builds shelters for veterans and the houseless. In disgust and awe at the jaded tolerance around homelessness in his community, Summers began building small shelters with one outlet for light and charging devices safely enclosed with a dead bolt door. His story twists unexpectedly when Summers is met with threats and violence for "taking" from the for profit homeless efforts in LA. Not allowing this bullsh*t to stop his cause, he wore a bulletproof vest around town as he worked. This fascinating juxtaposition between money and mercy is discussed in today's episode with Elvis Summers. Please check it out and consider donating to their cause www.thetinyhouse.org

Warning: you may be persuaded to adopt a furry friend at the end of this episode. Welcome Jim Keller, the owner of Homeward Pet: a no kill shelter located outside Seattle that focuses on pet adoption, behavioral therapy, fostering and charity. This organization is run by Jim and his wife. Both of whom left their long term careers, took massive pay cuts, to devote their lives to helping animals in need. In 1990, Homeward Pet was founded on the belief that every adoptable animal would eventually find a safe, caring home. "Euthanasia was – and continues to be – used only as a last resort to ease suffering from injury or illness. With this commitment to providing homeless animals without the pressure of a euthanasia deadline, we started small: just 350 cats and 20 dogs adopted this first year, many from foster homes." They have grown to adopt out nearly 2000 animals each year to their community, reduce animal surrender and have over 400 volunteers. We call these individuals Upstanders. People who devote their lives to upping the expectations in our society and how they participate in the world. Check out their website at homewardpet.org for information on their services. Enjoy! This episode we had the honor of interviewing Woodinville’s Chamber of Commerce Executive Director, Kimberly Ellertson. If you have ever considered a career in project management, event planning, city planning ect. and are curious what to do with that–this episode is for you. Kimberly shares how she honed her skill to gain experience and success. She acknowledges the mentors and internships that aided her in her career evolution. Ellertson knew her skillset was in organizing large social events and the art of mingling. But at the start the grind was real. Ellertson shares a comical moment when she cried “real tears” in front of her first manager when they offered her the dream job full time position, but with a salary that was cry worthy. If that’s the most relatable early career post college story then what is? She has fought to make this career hers regardless of financial challenges and like many careers dealing with people, criticism. Listen to the full episode today! This guest is from our neck of woods. We appreciate all the hardwork Kim does for our growing community in Woodinville.

Our guest today is Mike Millman, mayor of Woodinville, WA -- a growing suburbia outside of Seattle. Mike joins us to share his life of civic service as a long time firefighter in Everett, fire commissioner for Woodinville and volunteer of Woodiville's city planning committee. Later recruited to fill a role on city council and eventually elected Mayor of Woodinville. King County otherwise known as outside Seattle is facing massive population growth and therefore, new infrastructure demands. Woodinville, and locations of the like, feel like they are bursting at the seams in regards to the flow of foot and car traffic. Millman talks about local government, city planning and upgrades to the area that will help unburden locals. Normally, we hear these conversations around the dinner table as complaints and frustrations. This refreshing take on city growth and progress gives the audience a look at how areas outside larger cities manage and evolve due to urban sprawl. Doubly refreshing to hear from a local politician who sincerely cares for the future vision of his home and families in the area. We hope you enjoy today's episode.

Where do we even begin? Poteet Victory is one of the world’s most in-demand and collectible contemporary Native American artists. Although Victory’s work is abstract, his Cherokee-Choctaw influence still shines through his paintings. Poteet called in from his art studio in downtown Santa Fe, NM. His story is full of name drops, different zip codes, American history and success. Victory was first approached as an artist by his mentor, Harold Stevenson, who is famous for the controversial painting, The New Adam, which is now in the Guggenheim’s permanent collection. The art scene he describes is out of movie. In NYC spending time with Andy Warhol to what he calls his "start" working for a t-shirt graphic company in Maui (owned by a group who believed Jesus lived in an alien spaceship). His largest work, a 13ft tall and 60ft wide mural, still stands unfinished due to its controversial content which was rejected by the museum half way through its completion. The mural aimed to depict the Trail of Tears; the deadly and forceful migration of Native Americans to Oklahoma. He is a celebrated artist recently added to the Hall of Fame for Native American Art. He has served in the military, lived all over the USA, retains celebrity clientele and yet, remains a humble spirit. Enjoy this episode with guest, Poteet Victory, and learn the many lives he has lived with his years.
